Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
know I’m a little late to the party regarding the mess that’s being made at the beginning (or end, depending on your point of view) of the Garden State Parkway. It’s sad to see the removal of so many trees, especially when they are being replaced with concrete. But we’re being assured that it will all be worth it, in the name of safety. Last week we got in touch with a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, who told us the purpose of the $7.4 million project is to improve the connection between the Parkway and Route 109. “The goals are smoother traffic flow, less congestion and fewer accidents. Traffic on Route 109 south now has to make a U-turn to access the northbound Parkway. The U-turn requires drivers to weave through southbound Parkway traffic. That high-volume weave has resulted in a high number of crashes over the years,” said the spokesman. The improvements include a jughandle to replace the U-turn between southbound Route 109 and the northbound GSP; an additional lane on northbound Route 109;
the realignment of southbound Route 109; upgraded traffic signals; improved striping, signage and roadway lighting; expanded sidewalk access; and widened shoulders. The work is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. Let’s hope that doesn’t literally mean the middle of the year, otherwise the July 4 weekend traffic will be heaps of fun. The many friends of the late Jim Wright were rewarded with a special gift as they prepared to head home after a memorial service at the US Coast Guard base on Sunday. “It was a beautiful service,” said
³
Rob Lundholm, “and Jim thanked us as we were leaving with the most beautiful rainbow that any of us had ever seen.” Jim passed away four weeks ago after a two-year battle with cancer that inspired everyone who knew him. Jim, a former manager at Corinthian Yacht Club, a volunteer fireman and a very talented carpenter, showed a ridiculous amount of courage and high spirits right till the very end. Rest in peace, you good man. The annual Exit Zero Black Friday party should be a bit more fun than usual this year, now that we have a restaurant next door to our store. We will be offering not only 25% off ALL our store merchandise, but also off everything on the Exit Zero Cookhouse menu. And we will be offering free flatbreads, along with goodies from Seaside Cheese and some refreshments, too. The party runs from noon till 8pm. Come and visit and then make sure you drop by plenty of Cape May’s other fine local stores — don’t be doing your holiday shopping at the soulless out-of-town malls! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have a credit rating! I have resisted such mundane evil for decades, much in the way that I refuse to have a social security number or a government chip implanted in my head (oh you may scoff, but then THEY have made you scoff. The same THEY that use everyday devices such as those ATM machines to make you stare at the screen unblinking for a totally unreasonably long time, in order for subliminal patterns to hypnotize you and make you more malleable. Otherwise you would realize that you TOO have chips in your heads. Oh yes. But don’t get me started). Of course, a credit rating has never been necessary to one who purchases using salvaged pirate gold and wins properties on the turn of a card (most often Cribbage but sometimes Snap). And in fact here in Cape May we had our very own form of credit rating while the rest of America was a howling wilderness. It was based on what people thought of you from shaking your hand, looking you in the eye and seeing if you sweated. It was a rough kind of rating,
for sure, but never proved us wrong. Mind you, a “credit refused” decision then meant a blow to the side of the head from whoever found you wanting, and could end up in your credit rating and yourself dropping six feet off the Concrete Ship into the cold waters. So what changed my mind? Well, it was my desire to receive the proffered Cape May Gourmands Club card that came in the mail. All one had to do was post it back and one would receive a shimmering black card one inch thick, which would grant the holder the right to dine for free for exactly
30 seconds at any of Cape May’s eateries. Now, I can down a prodigious and surprising amount of food in half a minute, I can tell you. But when I had my staff read the small print, it demanded an “excellent” credit score. I had my people investigate (Kitchener used one of those damnable laptop computing machines) and it seemed that I had credit as “slim” as my hips (which are thin: that is the joke). Well, that was not acceptable, so I instructed the team to fix it (“make it so” I am fond of saying, quoting that bald sex god Picard from the television). I know not what they did but a scarce few months later I have received my gleaming Gourmand card. Oddly, the basement seems to be overflowing with brown boxes with the word “Amazon” on the side. One looks to be the same size and shape as a motorboat, and I swear several growled as I walked past. Now, I am off to the Exit Zero Cookhouse to use my card and challenge the burly Scotch owner to a curry-eating contest.

T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a fun new holiday show
aking the kids to see a show is a holiday tradition. Kids look damn cute when dressed — little girls in sparkly dresses and mary janes, little boys in vests and plaid bow ties. Decorated theater lobbies make lovely backdrops for the family photos, and the Rockettes and the Sugar Plum Fairy make lasting memories. But there comes a time, maybe between being too old to be dragged to another Nutcracker and too young to have anyone to drag, when you want a holiday alternative. Cape May Stage and Congress Hall offer The Twelve Dates of Christmas, a funny, edgy play “for mature elves only.” This great grownup outing seems tailor made for a group of twenty-something friends getting together, as for a bachelorette party. The play’s sisterly tone makes it a good choice for adult siblings taking a break from mom and dad. Couples on a romantic getaway will be glad they found each other. For parents with grown children — the kind who no longer wear velvet — it’s a nice way to continue the tradition of taking the kids
to see a show. Because the play is presented at Congress Hall, your night out is convenient —park the car and stay a while. Bookend the show with time in The Brown Room, relax after a day of shopping, or enjoy dinner at the Blue Pig Tavern before the show. (Those of you with young kids can find family-friendly fare at other places in town — Elaine’s Dinner Theater has Scrooge, the Cape May Stage main stage presents A Cape May Christmas and East Lynne Theater Company offers The Life and Adventures of Santa
Claus.) The Twelve Dates of Christmas begins on Thanksgiving Day, when Mary catches her fiance kissing another woman. Then, it’s a series of bad holidays and worse dates, until someone unexpected changes her outlook. Iraisa Ann Reilly stars. It’s a one-woman show, but it feels like there are many more people on stage, from the advice givers to the “125 jackasses” Mary fears she’ll have to sort through to find one decent date. Reilly, a former Cape May Stage intern, showed her comic chops as Edith in Blithe Spirit last season. The play is written by Ginna Hoben and directed by Mary Darling. The Twelve Dates of Christmas plays November 28 to December 30, Thursdays to Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 3, in the Harrison Room at Congress Hall. Admission is $25, or enjoy dinner and a show at the Blue Pig Tavern on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights for $59, or lunch and a show on Sundays for $39. For tickets, call 609884-6574 or visit capemaystage.org. Don’t delay — some shows are already sold out.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My sister-in-law, let’s call her Jean, and I have had a falling-out. Over the summer my younger sister revealed that Jean was critical of my toddler’s behavior and what she considered my inability to “reign her in.” I considered her my best friend and it hurt me. When I confronted her she shrugged it off and I have not spoken to her since. That was three months ago and now my brother wants to know why we aren’t talking. I told him. Shortly after, Jean called me to “resolve” the problem but was only sorry that my sister “betrayed” her by telling me. Now the holidays are here and I will have to be in the same place with her. What do I do? — Wounded Dear Wounded The problem with arguing with a fam-
Wise answers to perplexing questions
ily member is that unlike most social situations, you have to continue seeing them. So, suck it up and for heaven’s sake do not create a drama-rama at the Thanksgiving table. Pretend all is well. Be cordial but not chummy. She will probably not be your best friend anymore, because the Answer Lady suspects there are other issues. Perhaps she has heard critical comments regarding her own parenting skills. Eventually, you will be back on, if not close terms, certainly friendlier. To show your goodwill to all, pop into The Origiinal Fudge
Kitchen and bring a box of chocolate pretzels as well as a pound of pumpkin fudge to the table. Candy is a sure cure for everything. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I are having a test of wills. He insists on taking his lunch in plastic containers, which is fine but when he comes home, he leaves the container in the sink, unopened, not rinsed until I give up and wash them. My therapist says that I am enabling his bad behavior but they lay in the sink until they start growing things which doesn’t bother him. What should I do? — Weak Willed Dear Weak Willed You are not weak willed. In marriage one must pick one’s battles, and plastic containers are not worth the fight. I doubt your therapist is married, otherwise he or she would know that. The best thing to do is make his bad behavior inconvenient for him. Toss the containers once they get penicillin-friendly. When they are all gone and he asks where they are, direct him to Swain’s Hardware’s picnic/kitchen section. Once he starts to realize this is costing him money, he might just change his ways.

Bird Droppings
B
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
irding is a series of encounters, some of which are special and serve as markers that help measure a lifetime. One such encounter transpired the first of November. The place was South Cape May. The occasion was my regularly scheduled Monday bird walk. The particulars center upon the juvenile tundra Peregrine that landed on the beach, 50 yards away. While migrating Peregrines are not uncommon here, most of the 400 or so that are tallied are speeding by, the time allotted for appreciation measured in seconds. Monday’s bird was a gift, offering the dozen or so witnesses what for many was their best view of this celebrated Arctic falcon. Breeding on nest ledges across the Arctic, the falcon spends its non-nesting months enjoying the tropical sun. Their time of passage through Cape May is brief, concentrated mostly in late September and Early October. This bird, judged by size to be a female, was late and being a juvenile almost certainly hungry. Their vaulted powers of flight notwithstanding, becoming a professional Peregrine

falcon means facing a steep learning curve. The flock of gulls that erupted into flight as the Peregrine approached support the determination that the bird was in hunting mode. The element of surprise lost, the Peregrine wasted no time pursuing the gulls — instead she stood on the beach, casting her eyes out over Delaware Bay, hoping to spot some weary migrant over open water — habitat in which this raptor hold all the cards. Concluding that our group posed no threat, she maintained her vigil until a morn-

ing jogger pressed too close, whereupon the falcon lifted off, heading west. Bad news for the ducks on Bunker Pond. I have seen thousands of Peregrines in my life, here, in the Arctic and in the tropics, too. But I do not believe I have seen one to match the poise and beauty of the dark-breasted, golden-crowned female on South Cape May, although I once wrote an essay about just such an encounter back in 1976. But this encounter was not déjà vu. The bird was different, the observer much changed, too. Only the setting was the same and the enduring drama that is autumn migration in Cape May. The spell that bound us to the bird and the moment broken, our group turned back toward the parking lot. The Peregrine? She had her hunger to deal with, then thousands of miles of open sky to vault. Pete Dunne, leads Monday morning walks in the Nature Conservancy’s South Cape May Meadows, meeting 7:30am in the lot off Sunset Blvd. He also hosts an introduction to birding every Wednesday 2-4pm at CMBO, 701 East Lake Drive Cape May Point. Pre-registration is advised — 609-884-2736.
