Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
hat would you like for Christmas? I’m very difficult to buy for, according to those closest to me. Very particular, I’m told. I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with that. But, for those who are interested, here’s what I would like for Christmas. Okay, for 2016, to be more accurate. 1. The reinstatement of Rob Sheehan as Chief of Police of Cape May. The nonsense has gone on long enough, though I’m not sure anything will change unless Cape May votes itself a new mayor. Which brings me to... 2. A new mayor for Cape May. Ed Mahaney has been ruling the roost for seven years, during which time the city he says he loves so much has been witness to much acrimony and controversy, pretty much none of which would not have happened without his (mis)guiding hand. This wish will, I hope, be fulfilled when Cape May goes to the polls next November. 3. If you threw in a new City Manager and City Attorney, I think that would clean house in a most desirable way. One of those will definitely happen because Bruce MacLeod will retire at the end of 2016, if not before. As for
believe I missed all of those recent humpback sightings. There’s more, but I’m getting greedy... Enjoyed previous Exit Zero Burns Suppers? Or wished you had gone, but have never made it? In 2016, there are no excuses. We have doubled our capacity, by holding the event simultaneously in the Ugly Mug and Delaney’s AND holding it on a Friday, as opposed to the usual Thursday. It’s happening on Friday, January 22. Tickets are $35. Go to ezstore. us and buy them! Or call us on 609-770-8479. Cape May’s bopping beach bar Cabanas will revert to its old management company next year. This past summer, the bar, along with a restyled Room 429 (upstairs), was operated by Chris DiAntonio, of Beach Creek, the popular Wildwood restaurant. I particularly enjoyed the New Orleansesque vibe of Room 429 — it was good while it lasted. But now I’m looking forward to seeing what Payton Bowman has in store for 2016. Payton told me that Cabanas will reopen in March, and the upstairs restaurant in April. Until next week, have a wonderful Christmas, wherever you are.
³
the city’s attorney, Tony Monzo, there’s little chance he would survive a change of mayor. Nor should he, given his role in draping a dark cloak over the workings of local government. 4. I would like Cape May Brewing Company’s Honey Porter to be made a compulsory draft beer at every bar in town. I can’t get enough of this exquisite dark brew. 5. I would like to lose 15lbs off my waistline, so please ignore what I said above. 6. I would like to see a whale in the waters just off Cape May, at sunset, while I’m gliding past in a kayak, or aboard the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center’s boat. I can’t

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
will not be having any of this “Happy Holidays” malarkey. And before you start with your “Merry Christmassing”, let me strike you on top of you head with the flat of my hand. In my house, we are what those unbearable young ’uns refer to as “old school”. We will, come December 25, raise from our beds, dress in our Festive Best (not to be confused with our Sunday Best, our Courting Best, our Second Best or our Best of The Rest) outfits and wish each other a joyous Crïstesmæsse. Make no mistake, “pronunciation is everything” (as the late and sometimes lamented Ma D’Catur would say: Ma deplored mispronunciation and would take a terrible delight in dropping tricky words into the conversation in a fashion that necessitated an answer using that very word. “It’s a terrible thing,” she would say very quickly in her Irish brogue — she was not actually Irish, mind you, but then again nor was she Lenape, but that did not stop her from donning what she termed ‘native costumery’ once a year — “all these phenomena that might cause
an apocalypse of schadenfraude, don’t you think?” Ma’s corrective techniques were less about the patient explanation and more about the swift application of her leather tawse across a child’s buttocks. Anyway, once we have spent a few hours making sure we all have said “Crïstesmæsse” perfectly, we get round to the opening of gifts and the D’Catur custom of telling the truth about our gifts we have received. No cursing is permitted — the custom is less about rudeness than honesty, nor is breaking the gift in one’s teeth and trying to consume it (I am looking at you, Young
Albert, and I am not referring to the Premium Doggy Biscuit, which is after all meant to be eaten, but the vintage GI Joe action figure you wanted so badly then flew into rage at when you believed he was staring at you). No, this clears the air marvelously, as there are few things worse than not telling the truth, and then a mere decade later having amassed 300 pairs of XXXS Tanga Briefs (purple) because one’s great aunt has mistaken your annual frozen smile for stunned enthusiasm. In fact, this year we are extending the custom to each and every one of you, and will drop in casually at some stage of the day, and start the ball rolling by giving our own opinions on the gifts you have given each other. “That pullover is horrifying,” I might suggest over eggnog, leaving you in the easy position of merely having to say “I agree” without catching your mother-in-law’s eye. The awkward silence will be over before you know it, and I will be away on my toes before anyone speaks to anyone again. No need to thank me.

The Activity Column
C
By Cathy Dugan — this week, getting a jump on those resolutions
ome on, Cape Mayniacs. Resolve to do something better in 2016. We all know the depressing statistics — 45% of us make New Year’s resolutions, and about 8% of us stick to them. Why do we fail? Maybe it’s the myth that it only takes 21 days to form a new habit — most people need 66 days to get used to a new routine. Or maybe our failures stem from an all or nothing mentality — we do nothing until a magical date on the calendar, and then we “resolve” like crazy until we wear ourselves out. This year, ease into it. Don’t smoke like a chimney and then plan to quit cold turkey — smoke one less cigarette today. Don’t curse out the boss at the holiday party — update your resume instead. Don’t pig out this week because you plan to go paleo in 2016. And don’t glue your butt to the couch because you want to run a marathon in the New Year. Do a little every day, and you’re more likely to stick to your resolution. Trying to quit smoking? Visit Fiber Arts Yarn Shop and ask for help select-
ing an easy project. Your busy hands may take your mind off of smoking. Planning to curb your alcohol intake? Take a walk with friends instead of meeting for a drink. British researchers have found that people who walk in a group walk faster and further, thereby enjoying more of the health benefits of walking. Want to eat better? Visit Love the Cook and learn to cook one healthful dish. Seeking exercise? The weather is making it easy to keep moving this year. Bring your binoculars to the beach and
look for the humpback whales breaching just offshore. Climb the lighthouse and enjoy the sunny winter view. Adopt a dog you’ll have to walk. When winter weather finally shows up, take your search for fitness indoors. Visit Balance Yoga in West Cape May and discover just how good your muscles can feel. Try a new class at North Beach Health Club or Cape May Fitness Center. Cape May Recreation offers classes like jazz aerobics and tai chi at the Franklin Street Civic Center for as little as $5 per class, and roller skating is back at Convention Hall. Visit discovercapemaynj.com for more information. Take a ride up the Parkway and go bowling at the Mouse Trap Lanes in Woodbine. See if there’s a band you can dance to in the Boiler Room. Let the New Year be just another day on your journey to a healthy new habit. Don’t expect your new routine to be second nature before the Super Bowl, but stick with it. You could be feeling a lot better about yourself by the time spring rolls around.

HOLIDAY
PERFORMANCES Cape May Stage
November 27, 2015 - January 2, 2016
Directed by Roy Steinberg This world premiere, family-friendly holiday production, combines fireside storytelling with the holiday classics. Intertwining tales of Saint Nicholas and Cape May’s historic hero Captain Mey, we lovingly celebrate the warmth of a contemporary Santa and Mrs. Claus on a secret visit to our seaside resort.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife’s family always takes us on a cruise the week after Christmas. They pay for me, my wife and my eight-year-old son. I love my in-laws. They are generous. They always babysit, in fact more than I like. They always end up getting my son the gift he really wants for Christmas or birthdays, despite my objections that we can provide for him. They gave us the down payment for our house, as a wedding present. The house, by the way, is three doors down from them. I’d just like, for once, to have a say in these decisions. My wife, the peace maker, wants me to shut up and get along, which I’ve done for nearly 10 years. What do you think? – Castaway Dear Castaway Tough one. You might have to stop off at
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Delaney’s. Have a cocktail, order some lunch and ponder this dilemma. What The Answer Lady thinks you are really upset about is the controlling nature of the relationship, thinly disguised as “generosity,” compounded by the conflict your wife obviously feels in her reluctance to cut the cord. Try beating them at their own game. Buy the coveted present before they do. Buy tickets next year for a Christmas getaway and present it at Thanksgiving, as an early holiday present. It’ll only work once, because the in-laws are obviously experts at
this, but it will serve as a signal that you are ready to put your big boy pants on. Dear Answer Lady The night I hate of all nights is around the corner — New Year’s Eve. My girlfriend always expects me to lavish a lot of money on this one night and I’m not buying it this year. Any suggestions which will keep her happy and me in the black? — Ringing in the Blues Dear Ringing No need to be blue. This is Cape May. Happiness is just around the corner. Dinner at home followed by a night of bar-hopping is a personal favorite of the Answer Lady’s. There’s Fins, the Ugly Mug and Delaney’s on the mall. Cabanas and Carney’s on the beachfront. The Mad Batter always has great entertainment and food. The Boiler Room will be rockin’ with no cover charge. Or maybe a romantic dinner? The Merion Inn, PSI and The Ebbitt Room offer champagne toasts. If you want to venture off the island, Harbor View would be a great choice. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

RUFUS is a pointer and lab mix who was brought to the shelter with his sister Sophie. Rufus has a hair and skin condition but is improving with a better diet. Rufus has some lumps and bumps but that comes with age. He dreams of curling up by a warm fire and running around in a beautiful yard.
«
SOPHIE Sophie is a senior black lab mix. She has a wonderful personality and is easy to love. Sophie and her best friend, Rufus lived together for many years. They would love to be adopted together but they would also do fine separated. Sophie is extremely well behaved and mellow. She is very dog and people friendly.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
here are my cardinals?” Several callers were vexed by this concern last week. Northern cardinal, our brightest-colored sparrow, is a feeder favorite and their appearance a catalyst for visceral delight among those of us who squander our expendable income on bird seed. But cardinals are finicky eaters, they don’t like crowds and their feet are too large to fit on perches designed for smaller, more nimble species. Hopper and platform feeders work best. If you want more detailed information you are encouraged to visit bookstore manager Brian Moscatello at New Jersey Audubon’s Northwood Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point (884-2736) Back to cardinals. As permanent residents, your neighborhood cardinals have not gone anywhere but they are early risers, visiting your feeders early to beat the House Finch rush. Also, it’s still early in the season. Natural food items are still abundant. Warm temper-

atures also mean that birds need to feed less often. Come January and colder temperatures and cardinals will be beating a path to your feeder, providing you have the right seed.Cardinals have large, seed-crushing bills. Black oil sunflower seed is their fave. The smaller seed types favored by juncos and some sparrows are largely ignored by cardinal. Go with black oil sun and put it on a large open tray near vegetated cover — birds need nearby cover to feel at ease. Bird-hunting

hawks come to feeders, too — it’s perfectly natural. And by feeding birds you are not causing them to be killed, you are just causing them to be killed where you will see it. The neighborhood sharp-shinned hawk is going to eat twice a day one way or the other. The question is what and where? The solution to the problem is simple. Stop thinking of it as a problem. Your hawk is simply one more species coming to the feeder, one as specialized to its needs as any cardinal. Back to diet. Black oil sunflower seed is almost universally loved by seed eating birds including such feeder favorites as American goldfinch. Happily, the Nature Center of Cape May (1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, telephone 898-8848) vends New Jersey Audubon SAVE brand bird seed — a high-quality seed grown under contract, right here in New Jersey which saves on shipping costs as well as carbon emmissions. Most sunflower seed is grown in and shipped from the mid-west. What’s more the Nature Center of Cape May hosts a seed sale the first weekend of every month with 10% savings.
