Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
C
Reverend Robert Davis at the 2002 reopening of Congress Hall with Governor Christie Whitman and Curtis Bashaw, of Cape Resorts
hurchgoers won’t be impressed by this admission, but in the 13 years I have lived on this island, I have only once attended a local church service, excluding events like weddings and funerals. That came on Christmas Eve, 2006 when I moseyed along to the Macedonia Baptist Church on Lafayette Street to see the Reverend Robert Davis in action. I can’t propertly explain why I never returned, because I had a blast that night. The experience was just like the black church services I had seen on the movies back home in Scotland — there was lots of energy, lots of love, lots of singing, and lots and lots of “Amens”. Whoopi Goldberg in a nun’s outfit would have fitted right in. After that, any time I bumped into Reverend Davis around town (usually at The Brown Room, with his beautiful wife Carolyn) he would always say, “C’mon, Jack, why haven’t I seen you back at church?” And I would say, with total sincerity, “Reverend Davis, if I ever go to a church again, it will only be to yours.” Why? Because I grew up associating
church attendance with a kind of snooty formality that was a real turn-off. To my young eyes, people seemed to attend church to show their neighbors they were worthy — that, to me, was the Protestant religion in Scotland. But what I saw from the Reverend Davis was pure love for the church, and endless energy and enthusiasm. He came across as just a warm, down-to-earth, regular guy with a huge heart. What’s not to love about that. With his death this week, at the age of 90, Cape May has lost a legend. Wherever he is right now, I’m guessing he’s not far from a dance floor, martini glass in hand. My thoughts go out to Carolyn and his family. People are saying there are fewer Christmas lights around town. I can’t say I’ve made a proper study of this, though the streets did seem a little darker when I recently toured on a trolley, but I hope this isn’t a downward trend, since the holiday illuminations are so important for Cape May. Perhaps there is some kind of incentive the city can offer for local B+B owners and private home owners in the Historic District. You know — if we stopped paying endless thousands of dol-
³
lars in legal fees to fight lawsuits and battles that the city shouldn’t even be engaged in, we could buy lights for every home in the Historic District and still have, oh I dunno, a fortune left over. Just saying. This is my last opportunity to remind you to buy a ticket for the 12th Annual Burns Supper. The event is being held on January 22, a Friday (yay!) for the first time. And this year there is another reason to come — the event is being held simultaneously at the Ugly Mug and Delaney’s. Wondering how that’s going to happen? Well, it will involve a lot of toing and froing between the two mall establishments for me, the good men of the Irish Pipe Brigade, and the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey, who will be playing some tunes. Tickets cost $35 and all proceeds go to the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. Haggis is being served, but wusses can choose fish and chips. To buy tickets, you can either call us here at 609-7708479 (we accept all credit cards) or buy them online at ezstore.us. Tickets are NOT available on the night. Until then... HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have never passed from one year to the next without a fine malt in my left hand. I am, of course, right-handed, and the contents of that other hand have, over the years, varied. They have included — in no particular order or timing or importance — a silver-plated six-shooter, Mae West, Excalibur, a map showing the precise location of Shangri-La (the long lost whisky bar outside Ocean City, taken by the sea one night in 1901 after taking delivery of 3,000 bottles of 100-year-old Highland Park), and the fabled fist of the famed arm-wrestler Jimmy Malloy. One year a trickster in The Brown Room thought it would be the funniest thing to replace my malt with a blended whiskey. Note the “e”. Why, I’ve killed men over that “e”. and not lost a moment of sleep over it Anyhow, as I raised my glass to toast 1944 (I was home on leave, recovering from a nasty ankle sprain sustained after parachuting into The Wolf’s Lair to assassinate that terrible little Adolf chap. We failed, but I bagged as brace of his more able commanders as
consolation) I instantly detected the awful taint of a blend, and hurled the glass through the (closed) window, and it took an entire bottle of Lagavulin (a youthful but bearable 20-year-old) to rinse my palate clean of the smell. I wasted only a glass on the knuckles of my right hand after wreaking vengeance on the bright lad who thought to make a fool of me. And let me tell you, my view of Cape May, seen through that amber liquid, has changed hugely, too: it seems but the blink of an eye I was reassuring the Lenape natives that we would be staying for a few months, just to
enjoy the air and would be on our way again as soon as we replenished some supplies (technically speaking this was true: it’s not my fault those noble but trusting souls didn’t think to ask the exact nature of the supplies or I would have explained that we were short a few hundred gallons of fresh water, a load of cured meat, some fresh vegetables and a new country). Now, I look around and see the glittering skyscrapers under our waterproof dome, and wonder... oh, wait, no, damn, there I go, giving you what the young people refer to as “spoilers” thanks to my Time Machine. I can say no more for now, though I advise we immediately cease our efforts to contact extraterrestrials, as they are a bad lot. So, as we say farewell to this wretched year, let me wish all of you (well, all of you save three: you know who you are, and I know where you live) a splendid start to this brave new one. And not to worry about June 13, not at all, you hear me? It’s not 100 per cent certain, all right? Please don’t let my alwaysaccurate visions ruin the year, not at all.

The Activity Column
By Cathy Dugan — this week, keep your brain from hibernating
U
nlike some mammals, humans are not programmed to hibernate in the winter, but sometimes it feels like we are. Even in the midst of a mild winter we find ourselves inclined to nap more. Long, dark nights and short periods of sunshine make us want to stay inside, safe from the elements, even when the elements are treating us to record-high temperatures. There are benefits to all of this indoor time. Families can spend more time together. Children may go to bed more willingly, and you can binge watch a new television show without feeling guilty. Don’t let this extra indoor time go to waste. Keep your brain from going into the deep freeze with a new activity. Pick an historical period and learn more about it. Maybe you were meant to live in ancient Rome or China. Studies suggest that because we have evolved to specialize and live together in society, modern humans are not as intelligent as our ancestors. Could you have survived alone in an ancient wilderness? Map out a summer trip, real or imaginary, to
e w N y Y p ea r p a

a faroff place. Research the history of your profession — what was nursing like 100 years ago? What did Victorian-era teachers teach? Learn about weird medical facts and ponder becoming a hypochondriac. (According to my friends, that’s the one benefit to turning fifty — no one will ever accuse you of being a hypochondriac again.) Maybe you have face blindness, or prosopagnosia — the inability to recognize even your friends in a crowd. This winter, you can rediscover a skill you’ve forgotten. Pick up that old high school instrument and relearn a song or two. Prac-
tice the French or German you studied in high school, or learn a few phrases of American Sign Language. Take a class online and learn how to do your own taxes, or what macroeconomics means to you, or how the electoral college works. Don’t just drink wine - become an expert in the wines of one region. Pick up a couple of cases and host a wine tasting. Get inspired at the Cape May Artists’ Cooperative and get a little crafty. Adult coloring books are trendy right now, but don’t stop there — there are plenty of toys and crafts in the Toy Shop to occupy your time. Don’t just Party Like a Scotsman at the Exit Zero Burns supper on January 22 — learn something about Scotland first. Memorize a poem or two by Robert Burns so you can keep up when John Cooke recites ‘A Man’s A Man for A’ That.’ Read Gavin McCrone’s Scottish Independence: Weighing up the Economics and ponder the implications, and the likelihood, of the separation from Great Britain. You can even read a little Outlander by Diana Gabaldon to get into the spirit. Happy New Year!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Last month while I was away at college my boyfriend and I were sitting in the student lounge and I was teasing him. He threw a pen at me which hit me in the head. We laughed and forgot about the incident. The next thing we knew, my boyfriend was being accused o physical abuse by college oicials. When I asked who make such an accusation, I was told that it came from a friend o mine. Fortunately, there were other people in the room who testiied on his behalf, plus a video cam o the “incident” and the charges were dismissed. Why would she do something like that? And should I confront her? — Betrayed Dear Betrayed Uh-oh! The Answer Lady suspects a woman scorned, even if only in her head.
Wise answers to perplexing questions
This woman has never been a friend to you. She either has a crush on your boyfriend or perhaps on you, but something is amiss. Confronting her would be useless. She will maintain she was looking out for your welfare and accuse you of being in denial. This is a good opportunity for you to distance yourself from her. And while you are home for the holidays, why not exorcise this negative and pay a visit to Splash and Good Scents? Just the aura as you walk through the doors will give you an “ummmm” moment.
Dear Answer Lady My 30-year-old daughter has been flirting with a young man. She has a history o picking the wrong guy and usually one with a bad temper and an abusive nature and I suspect this man is no exception. They are childhood friends who went their separate ways ater high school. My daughter lives out o town, but is spending more and more weekends here and I suspect he is the reason. How far should I go to try and stop this before it gets started? — Concerned Dear Concerned You can tell her how you feel and then step back and shut up. She is 30 not 13 and must make her own decisions, difficult though that may be for you. However, there is no better foundation for facing the future than motherdaughter time. Schedule a girls’ outing. Pop by Sunset Liquors for a bottle of champagne. Stop into Seaside Cheese for snacks. Then move on down the road to Accents on Beauty for the full treatment from hair to pedi. It may not change the outcome of the romance, but will underscore your bond.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
R
ocky Balboa is alive and well. I remember seeing Rocky (the original) when I was a kid. It was good, I thought, but apparently I was supposed to think it was “excellent!” Then came the onslaught of one Rocky movie after another. There were Russian opponents, Mr T, and even one where he fights a woman! Oh, wait… was that Million Dollar Baby? Sorry, I got confused there. It’s become nearly the laughing stock for us movie-goers. “Geez, another Rocky movie? What’s this, number 22?” It can make you split a gut laughing — till you’re sick of hearing the jokes too. The first Rocky was filmed on a shoestring budget (under a million), and it grossed more than $117 million. It took home Oscar gold too — for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. And it nominated for many more. So what does Stallone do with this elite honor? He proceeds to make a ga-jillion more Rocky films. Each one worse than the last. He directs them, too. Why? Was he a control freak who wanted all the glory? Or could he
2 WEST TAMPA AVE, VILLAS
Stallone is back in the ring... sort of. simply not find a director who would take on the projects? Perhaps us simple folk will never know for sure. In 2006, he made the installment in the series simply called Rocky Balboa. The best it receives is the “C’mon it wasn’t as bad as all the other ones” award. Seriously, the only nominations it gets is the Golden Schmoes Award and a nomination at the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards (true awards). I’m not sure if not winning an award from Stinkers is bad… or good.

Creed is the first film where Rocky is no longer fighting but rather coaching… and he’s helping the son of his former nemesis Apollo Creed. Apparently we have something here. Stallone has gotten a Golden Globe nomination for acting in a supporting role. More importantly, the film is getting less stink bomb nominations and more actual nominations. The fact is: it’s a very good film. I think maybe even better than the original. If Stallone had simply waited and made this film after the first one (yes, 40 years later) maybe the Academy would have taken this one more seriously. As it stands, he made a baker’s dozen from the series and watered down this last installment. Well… maybe this is the last installment. All that to say, “Well, it’s Oscar time folks!” And you know that that means? The Cape May Film Society’s Annual Oscar Party! Fun, food, and Oscar gold!
