Cape May Brewery’s New Brewhouse Arrives!
It’s been a big week at Cape May Brewing Company — they took home the People’s Choice Award at the 10th Annual Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival, were named New Jersey Brewery of the Year for 2015 by the New York International Beer Competition, AND their new 30-barrel brewhouse arrived. Here, Justin Vitti, Brian Hink, Diane Wright, Bob Krill, Ryan Krill and Courtney Rosenberg greet the equipment after its 2,800-mile cross-country journey. Aleksey Moryakov

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
oung Albert said something the other night that made me not just think, but question my whole attitude to dogs. “You know,” he opined as Kitchener was leading him to the door for his evening walk in the dark and rain, “if an alien species landed, enslaved humanity, bred you with each other with a mind to make you parodies of yourselves, castrated or sterlizied you and allowed you out only when secured with a rope around your neck, well, you would take a dim view of that, would you not?” Of course, when I say “said”, I mean he conveyed it with a look, as dog owners (and I am suddenly anxious about even using the word “owner”) know their pets (“pets”!) can do. I find Yorkshire Terriers (a designermade breed!) exceptionally expressive, and so Albert communicated all of this with a raised eyebrow and a slight downturn of his lip. And I knew he was right. We have taken a noble beast, a competitor, and made it into a slave, calling it our “best friend” all the while. Oh, they seem happy enough, and are truly
not a threat in evolutionary terms (not like octopi - don’t get me started on those waterdwelling nightmares. And as for chimps, well you know my thoughts there: opportunistic, bitter almost-rans who given a chance will leap off their circus tricycles, tear off their little jackets and hats and rip our faces from our skulls) and in truth are never more content that chasing a ball (not just a ball, but the very same ball) up and down the beach for hours at a time. And that, too, is our fault — would a wolf do such a thing? No, he would not. He would wait for you to bend down to pick up
the ball and casually leap atop your back and bite you on the neck, is what he would do. And then howl at the moon with pieces of your stupid hair still stuck to his chin. Not that I want that to happen, you understand: that time a new member of staff mistakenly gave Albert a raw steak, despite the 100-point type message stuck to the fridge spelling out “do NOT ever give Albert anything to eat that will give him a clue that he is eating something that was once living”. He ran amok in the Mansion, savaging every ankle he could reach, until we formed a shield wall using silver drinks trays, frisbees and in fact shields from the Trophy Room and herded him out into Cape May. By the time dawn — and his sanity — has returned, the sidewalks were awash with tattered socks and sneakers. But I am going to pass a law here in our city, that from now on, dogs cannot be neutered, leashed, called “Marley” or made to wear little comedy coats. There will be complaints, and casualties, but we will be all the better for it as a nation.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Eighth Annual Singer Songwriter Cape May
he Eighth Annual Singer/Songwriter Cape May is a convention for music professionals: two afternoons of music business panels, workshops, clinics, mentoring, demo listening sessions and networking. Congress Hall is the base of operations for the conference and the location of the keynote performances, Patty Larkin on Friday night and Dan Navarro on Saturday night. You can practically feel the talent oozing from the place. Inside, people are forging relationships, collaborating, exploring outlets for their music and generally honing their professional skills. In the evenings, they spread out through Cape May, and the rest of us enjoy the fruits of their labor — for free! Experienced singer/songwriter attendees choose from two strategies. In the first, you pick a venue you love and stay put, enjoying whatever music happens to be on the schedule. For example, if you’re a regular at Lucky Bones, plan to spend the evening there. Order a meal, chat between songs, relax and enjoy yourself. The second strat-
egy is more active. Scan through a guide, like this handy edition of Exit Zero, pick out the artists you want to see, and move from venue to venue. You may have to hustle, but you’ll see more of Cape May and mix with more of the other music lovers in town. Consider taking your bike if this is your plan although all venues are technically within walking distance, you’ll waste a lot of good listening time walking from, say, Elaine’s on the 500 block of Lafayette to the Corinthian Yacht Club on the 1800 block of Delaware. Walking or biking is always your best
ALL the PRETTY THINGS. WE HAVE THEM! Our GORGEOUS selection of HANDBAGS, HATS, JEWELRY, SCARVES and other COOL STUFF will SPICE UP all your LOOKS! Open Saturday & Sunday 10-6 thru March

bet for singer/songwriter, because thousands of visitors will come from near and far, and parking is sure to be a challenge. Bring your patience, and your manners. Music is the main attraction, not just background, so keep your conversation to a minimum during the performances. Pay attention so you can jot down the website for performers you like. Consider bringing extra cash in case you want to purchase music. Applaud enthusiastically. There will be a wide variety of genres represented, and if you’re not a fan of one, wait 45 minutes and you’ll be treated to another. An example of the variety is evident in the lineup at Cabanas. You go from the indie pop of Chutes & Ladders, to the rock pop of Craig Greenberg Band, to the blues rock of Castle Creek or Jake Tavill or Kevin McWha Steele and the Nightly Howl, to rock and roll of bands like Buffalo Stack and Our Marvelous Lives, with singer songwriters Casey Buckley and James Hearne thrown into the mix. You’re bound to find something you like — maybe even your new favorite singer.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady The prom is weeks away. I have my eye on a certain boy and want him to ask me to the dance? How do I make that happen? — Dance Fever Dear Fever You have plenty of time for the most delightful Machiavellian Maneuvers and the Answer Lady is tickled pink to assist. The first move is to try and sit near him at lunch. The goal is for him to sit next to you if the stars are in alignment. Second: Try and be “just by coincidence” at the same places — basketball games, assemblies, hangouts. Third: Once you have surveyed the lay of the land, have a little party — just a few friends over for movies and popcorn and, of course, include him, making sure
Wise answers to perplexing questions
that at least one of his friends is also invited so that: A. He doesn’t feel trapped; and B. You aren’t left looking desperate if things don’t work out the way you planned. (Like him hitting on your best friend). Which brings me to Plan B. Keep your eye on Bachelor Number Two so you can move forward and not be left lying in the fetal position on prom night pining over Number One. Dear Answer Lady I got engaged at Christmas and have
just had the most devastating news. My skank sister got engaged Valentine’s Day. I can’t even believe she would do something like this. She has consistently one-upped me her whole sleazy life. What am I going to do about it? Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken Your devotion to your sister is touching, especially since the Answer Lady is guessing that you will each be participants in the other’s wedding. Pity goes out to your parents for having to foot the bill for not one but two bashes in the span of? A year or two, peut etre? Here’s my advice. IF possible, let your sister forge ahead with her wedding plans while you plot, ah plan, yours more surreptitiously. This may not work when it comes to the guest list, the location and the date, but you can certainly keep your wedding dress and wedding cake a secret until the final hour. Of course, if your sister is determined to let you go first, well then, my dear you must adopt a “Que serra, serra” mentality. Forgetaboutit. Relax and focus on enjoying your moment in the sun.

Mylady is a polite, calm girl who loves to sit on laps and snuggle. She is very smart and will even let you know when she has to go out. Mylady is good with kids, cats, and other dogs. Maybe you could be the second chance she is hoping for. We promise — she’s a perfect lady!
«
ACE is a sweet, loveable boy who came into the shelter as a stray. He’s better with older kids because he’s quite playful. He loves other dogs, but it remains to be seen about cats. This is a well-mannered boy who even knows “sit!” Ace is an ace for sure.
«
PINKY loves working with people. She is a student in the shelter’s CLASS training program, and is learning useful commands that will help her in a forever home. She is a very good student and expected to graduate soon. Pinky is also crate-trained, which makes transition to a new home much easier for a dog.

The Movie Column
H
“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, reviewed by Jessie Jaine, Cape May Film Society membet
ave you ever visited a hotel a fourstar hotel? Then you try to book again only to find they’re closed for an upgrade. Then you revisit when it opens to find it’s become a three-star hotel. You think to yourself, “They should have left it alone.” Check into the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. They just should have left the first alone. In 2011, we visited the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a film in which British royalty (star power royalty that is such as Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, and many others) travel to India for what they have been told is one of the finest retiree destinations (thus the title of the film). What they get is a rundown building in the midst of reconstruction. The characters in the film were very diverse with equally different dreams and hopes and reasons for being there. That film received rave reviews from critics and audiences (and myself) alike. Four years later, as the premise goes, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is nearly
Sadly, you might not want to revisit this particular hotel... filled to capacity. In fact, there is only one room left for two incoming takers! Dev Patel returns to play Sonny Kapoor, the young entrepreneur responsible for the first hotel’s makeover. He was the one incidentally delivered the classic line, “Everything will be all right in the end, so if it’s not all right, it is not yet the end.” He wants to build a second hotel as majestic as the first. Many from the original cast are back, including director John Madden and writer
Ol Parker. Notable newcomers to the cast are Richard Gere and David Strathairn. However, the additional stars don’t really add to the aged beauty of the original cast. The frenetic or frantic inaction of Patel’s upcoming wedding seem to make the movie longer than it needed to be. And the visual splendor of India’s countryside, which predominated the first film, is less in focus here. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel left you broadly smiling, watching it again would be another trip to India! The Second Best Marigold Hotel just left you... We are always interested in hearing from you about what movie you’ve just seen. Send 200 words or less about the film you saw to capemayfilm@hotmail.com. Then watch for your review in an upcoming edition of Exit Zero! And registration is open for this year’s Cape May Film Camp! Taking place June 22-26, we will teach your young filmmaker how to conceptualize, write, plan, direct, shoot, and edit a movie. Plus the film will premiere in front of a live studio audience! Email at the above address to learn more.

Bird Droppings
A
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ny day now, the first piping plovers will be arriving. Establishing territories on the mercurial and contested substrate that lies just above reach of waves and tide. Once again, these heroic fist-sized, sand-colored shorebirds will strive to raise young and maintain their small breeding population. An effort that is becoming more and more effortful and less and less successful because of compounded challenges, most directly or indirectly related to us. Piping plover thrives in the sand and cobble habitat that lies between dunes and tide. It was doing pretty well until the onset of the Victorian Age when our species began returning to the sea for recreation and the plover’s limited habitat became a traffic avenue for strollers and a play area for dogs. Beach communities recognize the problem and their responsibility. Nesting areas are roped off from intrusion and signs warning dog owners to leash their canines posted. Human residents and visitors generally heed the warning signs. The problem is pip-
ing plovers cannot spend their life behind a rope. Chicks must feed and this means going down to the water’s edge where beach strollers walk by in a daunting, nonstop train with the result that chicks are driven away from food — andf the attending adults distracted by beach strollers cannot defend chicks from the gulls that fly in and snap up the little puff balls. And that is why piping plover numbers are declining. They are not fledging enough young to keep up with normal attrition. What you can do to help plovers is not at
all onerous — just the opposite. When you see a near apoplectic sand-colored bird running along ahead of you, doing everything it can to gain your attention: Stop. Look around for a ping-pong ball sized puffball on matchstick legs. Now plot a course to avoid it. Chances are the chick will crouch and freeze. Don’t pursue it or try and herd it behind the enclosure. It’s hungry and there is no food up there. If you pursue it, this will just make the adult more frantic and draw the attention of a hungry gull or ghost crab. Now get clear of the area and leave the birds in peace. Be particularly attentive May through July in tidal areas directly in front of roped-in areas. And needless to say, keep dogs on leashes. You might be asking why can’t adult plovers bring food to their young like other birds. Plover chicks are hot-wired to run and feed shortly after leaving the egg. This mobility plus the company of an attentive adult was all piping plovers needed to fledge and keep the species population healthy on this marvelously diverse planet. But they need our help.
