The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know that Cape May is the home of the whole modern-day Saint Valentine’s tradition? The man himself was something of a boor, I must admit, and not so much interested in love as he was lust, but did have a silver tongue and something of a cheeky glint in his eye and was hard to dislike for long. Anyways, we were sitting in The Brown Room one evening, he and I and The Pope of New Jersey (you didn’t New Jersey had its own pontiff, for some years? And that the “Vatican on the Shore” was the go-to destination for the faithful intent on prayer and posing on the beach? We three were working on ideas to promote Cape May as the nation’s next capital, and Saint V proposed a “Love Week”. What he had in mind was not really wholesome, once he got down to fleshing out the details (I used the term “fleshing” intentionlly) and Pope Tony struck Saint V a savage blow to the top of the head with his mitre, shouting “take that idea to Sodom.” Once order was restored, we settled on
a romantic rather than raunchy theme to the holiday, and named it after the concussed Saint V (the naming of the event after him rather ruined his wild ways: it’s hard to be a rake when the ladies are looking at you with dewey-eyed sentimentality and expecting heart-melting prose and a trail of rose-petals). Of course we had no idea it would catch on so fast: we were for a short while the red-rose epicenter of America, and also did a roaring trade in heart-shaped chocolates (our earlier venture into chocolate-shaped
hearts was not so successful). We even went so far as to have the city’s parks and flower beds laid out and planted precisely so that on that most special day of the year, when viewed from above, Cape May is a perfect red rose. At least, I think it is: a vengeful Saint V was suspiciously keen on being in charge of the planting, and over the years I have heard that rather than resembling a gigantic flowery rose, the aerial viewer instead sees a tumescent ... well never mind what.... suffice of to say, there are tales of helicopter piolts and balloonists coming back to earth with white faces and 1000-yard stares. I am not inclined to check the truth of this myself, as I have a sensible distrust of all things flying (whether natural of man-made: do not start me on pigeons) and other than one Space Shuttle ride (that was hardly flying, really, so much as being shot into space, so was acceptable) I refuse to go anywhere unless the trip can be walked, driven, sailed, tunnelled or teleported (no more of the latter now: suffice of to say the D’Catur Labs have some major announcements to make soon).

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Weekend for One
ouThe world may be focused on duos this time of year, but you find yourself flying solo, by choice or circumstance. “Love Cape May” weekend, February 12-16, offers you a chance to spoil the most important person in your life - you. Solitude has its benefits, and it’s more in keeping with Valentine’s Day traditions than you may realize. Valentine’s Day has roots in Lupercalia, the pagan festival of purity. For Lupercalia, early Romans sacrificed a goat to drive away evil spirits and promote good health. Later Romans modified the festival into a celebration of love - chaste, Christian love. The romance came much later. In Victorian England, most valentines were sent to friends, and that hasn’t changed. Lots of pals, nieces, grandkids, and great aunts will be receiving valentines this year. Google “Valentine’s Day activities” and you’ll get crafts for kids, treats for your pet, and team-building exercises for work. Romance steals the spotlight, but it’s not the only player.
So enjoy your alone time in Cape May. Schedule a massage to soothe those snowshoveling muscles. Buy yourself a lucky charm to celebrate Friday the thirteenth at one of Cape May’s jewelry stores. Visit the the Cape May Artists’ Cooperative Gallery - offering special discounts to celebrate the anniversary of their new location - for a new piece of art for your home. Try Whale’s Tales and Splash, featuring special discounts, or West End Garage for a unique decoration. Visit the winter craft show and browse with no one to hurry you. Cape May’s craft shows

are a blend of the familiar and the foreign - you’ll probably be able to find the jewelry maker that impressed you last year, but you’re also likely to encounter a new vendor. “Crafts and Collectibles in Winter” will be held February 14 and 15, 1- 4, at Cape May Convention Hall Convention Hall is also home to roller skating, a great way to stretch the cabin fever out of your muscles. There are sessions Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday. Admission is $5, $2 for non-skaters. Or, stroll the beach - look for the mysterious railroad tracks in the sand as you watch an early sunset. Shop the Cape Atlantic Book Company. Sing along at the annual Beatles Night at the Boiler Room on Friday, February 13, 7-11pm. Visit the Designer Show House. Dine at the bar at Lucky Bones or at the coffee shop at the Lobster House, or pick up takeout for an outdoor picnic from the Cape May Peanut Butter Company, if weather permits. Buy yourself candy from the Fudge Kitchen - just the stuff YOU like, and just as much as you like.

The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend went away on a business trip recently and we were texting back and forth. I know he misses me, but would not say so and has yet to utter the L word, despite our frequent discussions regarding moving in together. Does he have to say the L word? Should I make this an issue? ‑ A Love That Dare Not Say Its Name Dear Love “Does he have to say the L word?” That would be no – he does not. Should you make an issue of it? Is it a deal breaker? The Answer Lady thinks the real question is what is the core concern – on both sides? Why do you think he has avoided saying the words? If it is because you suspect he doesn’t feel them, then that is a problem. But what if he just
has issues which prevent him from saying the words, even though he may want to say them and perhaps does, in other ways? The Answer Lady fears a “talk” is in order, which is something you seem to be avoiding. Why would that be? Because you fear he will end the relationship? If that’s the case, I would say that “ship” has already sailed so why not take the risk and possibly be rewarded with a deeper relationship than the faltering one you seem to be in now?
Cape May & Exit 0 Charms
Dear Answer Lady I expect a proposal for Valentine’s Day, if I don’t get it, do I move on or stay the course?– Stuck in Neutral Dear Neutral The Answer Lady is envisioning a scene from Stephen King ‘s Misery in which the love of your life is handcuffed to a bed and inflicted with various tortures until he coughs up, in this case, a ring. I would hope you want a ring because he loves you and wants to spend the rest of his life with you, so perhaps that discussion needs to take place first – if indeed said ring does not materialize Valentine’s Day. On the other hand, the thing men don’t always get – is that women can’t really afford to invest too much time in a relationship that is “stuck in neutral,” if they want a family. So, perhaps it is time for you to move on, but only because you are no longer happy with the status quo, not because you are trying to manipulate him into doing something he does not want to do. But don’t give up yet. He might surprise you. Men can be delightfully romantic when we least expect it.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
Meet NOODLES and MAX, two really sweet boys. They came to the shelter together because their owner passed away. Unfortunately for these lovely little guys, their owner couldn’t find any other relative to care for them. That is how they ended up here at the shelter. They have been patiently waiting for a forever home.
«
SABRINA is a sweet, wonderful snuggle puff, but only when she wants to be! She is a very independent little girl and she knows what she wants and when she wants it! Sabrina can be quite playful but her favorite activity is sitting by a window and relaxing. Come meet this beautiful cat.
Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD
«
CHRISTIAN is a sweet older girl who loves to snuggle! She enjoys sitting on laps and taking long naps. Come to the shelter to meet Christian and her brother Devon. Both guys are free with the seniors for seniors program here at the shelter. Anyone who is 62 or older who wants to adopt them will not have to pay an adoption fee.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hat’s right, it’s winter and yes some of the natural world shuts down. But for many birds, winter is when life heats up. Take Great horned Owls. They’re sitting on eggs now. So are Bald Eagles. Ducks are all paired up or in the process of pairing. Why now? Saves time in the spring. When ducks head back to northern breeding grounds they don’t have to waste precious time on courtship. They just breast the water and get down to the serious business of moving their genes ahead. It’s not a bad strategy if you nest in a place that is locked in ice eight months out of 12. And think of the money ducks save. No cards. No flowers. No chocolates. Just you and me babe — how about it? But if long courtships are to your liking, try Northern Harrier. They still breed sparingly in the marshes of South Jersey. The females start advertising their readiness in March in a display called Sky dancing. Males are a little stunted in this matter, they typically begin displaying in May. The way it works is this: female goes ballistic.
Starts doing cart wheels in the sky. Lands on a conspicuous perch. Turns her back on the male and leans forward. In the language of harriers, this is how she says, “OK buster, lets see what you got.” Now it’s the male’s turn to impress. He climbs, does a back flip, plunges to earth and pulls out to climb again, and again.... Drawing a sequential set of Us across the sky: UUUUUUUU. This is harrrier sign language for I Love U. If the feeling is mutual, female stays on the perch to be joined by the male.
Celebrating 25 Years!
Harrier love is complicated by numbers. Polygamy is fairly common in this species and more complex unions involving multiple males and females not unheard of. A great deal depends upon the prey base. If there are lots of rodents, more birds breed. The guy who gets the girl is the one who catches the most mice, it’s the harrier equivalent of driving a Porsche or buying a big fat diamond ring. Actually raptor breeding dynamics are complex right across the board. In some species, females are fluid, changing nest sites and mates every year. In Peregrines the male comes with the territory. Bigger, badder female turns up and challenges the resident female, she gets the cliff and the guy. Ms Runner up gets to move on and see what the neighbors are up to. Among Coopers Hawks different females have been known to share nesting stages. One female lays, another incubates, a new female tends the young. So yes it’s winter but among nesting raptors things are pretty steamy.
