Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

remember publishing a story in the summer of 2011 about two friends (and one dad) who had started a little brewery out at Cape May Airport. My first thought was — where were THEY when the Exit Zero office was located at the airport! (We were based there 2007-2009). My second thought was: That’s a cool idea. My third thought was: Wonder if it will still be around by the end of the year. If you have spent the last three years under a rock, then you might not know how this particular story turned out. The rest of you will be well aware that Cape May Brewing Company is now a major economic force in this area. What started out as a three-man operation — Ryan Krill and his fellow 2005 Villanova alum Chris Henke, plus Ryan’s dad, Bob Krill — now employs 21 full-time (and counting) people. That first summer, the trio pumped out their inaugural brew, Cape May IPA (that’s a pale ale for those who are unfamiliar with beer terms), from a 12-gallon container they made from scrap metal, and shells from discarded kegs (Chris is a mechanical engi-

neer). They did this in a 1,500-square-foot building at the airport. And that first batch quickly went on sale in Cabanas. Following that successful, if inauspicious, debut you could say things went pretty well for the beer boys. Last year the company sold 3,000 barrels (that’s 93,000 gallons) and expects to DOUBLE that number this year, thanks to a major expansion (the ribbon cutting will be in April) which will increase their overall footprint to nearly 20,000 square feet and their brewing capacity to 472,500 gallons per year.

Cape May Brewing Company now have an inventory of more than 100 different beers, which they distribute to more than 200 bars, restaurants and liquor stores (they recently installed their own bottling facility), stretching from this little island to Philadelphia, and other parts of Pennsylvania. One of their latest additions is to the beer list at Gordon Ramsay Pub in Atlantic City. Yes, even that famously irascible superchef loves some Cape May beer. Their beers are winning awards all over the country, the latest being their Coastal Evacuation, an IPA which took a silver medal in the Best of Craft Beer Awards in Oregon, the heart of craft beer country. And they have a taproom (aka a brewery bar where you can go hang out and enjoy their potions) that’s the biggest in New Jersey and is open daily from noon to 8pm. Can you saw wow!? I’ve watched the ascendancy of Cape May Brewing Company with pleasure and interest. It’s fabulous for this area that a young, energetic, super-relevant (because

CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

Page 14

RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR From Page 13 craft beer really IS relevant) and irresistibly successful company chose Cape May for its HQ. Okay, so it’s not really Cape May — it’s Cape May Airport, based in Erma, with a Rio Grande zipcode, situated right next to Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum — but it’s close enough! Ryan, whose background is in commercial finance, has said of those early days, “We didn’t have a $1 million budget from some venture capitalist. We were just two reasonably intelligent people and said let’s give it a stab and see what becomes of it. It started as a hobby, and now it’s a full-fledged business.” On Tuesday he told me, “I never could have imagined what we have become, especially in only four years.” I believe very strongly in catalysts — that individuals and individual companies can energize and inspire communities, and especially business communities. When I first visited Smith Street in Brooklyn in 1998, it was a grimy, slightly shady neighborhood with one decent place to eat, a French restaurant called Patois. The existence, and growing popularity, of Patois eventually inspired

a couple other restaurants to open. A few boutique stores followed. Then along came some cool bars, more restaurants, bakeries. And now, Smith Street is one of the hippest, most thriving commercial districts in New York City. I’ve said on many occasions that the quality and amenities offered by Cape Resorts group (Congress Hall, Virginia Hotel, Beach Shack, Sandpiper, and will soon be opening a hotel in Shelter Island, New York) have inspired other local businesses to up their game. And I believe that Cape May Brewing Company has become another force for economic good in this area. How could you not be inspired by two young men (and I’m not forgetting the dad!) creating such a successful company? There’s a groundswell of entrepreneurial activity happening in this area. Look at some of the brewery’s neighbors at Cape May Airport. A Place on Earth, the Washington Mall-based soap shop, recently opened a production plant and outlet store (they’ve started wholesaling their products to, among others, Whole Foods). Then there is Cape May Roasters (more on them in a later issue), part of the group that also owns Cape May Winery, the Washington Inn, Lucky Bones and Love the Cook, who produce gourmet

coffee a few doors down from the brewery. Meanwhile, on the island, other artisans are baking their own bread and making their own honey and peanut butter. It’s a good time to be in Cape May and I have a feeling that we’re going to continue on this path of increased growth by businesses that are producing quality, authentic products and services. And I’m not not just talking the talk — Exit Zero is opening a new store on Jackson Street (next to Louisa’s Café) in late March. It will be called Neversink: The Magical Little Maritime Store. So, clearly, I truly am optimistic about Cape May’s future. And staying with the good news, I had a drink with a local hotelier and restaurateur on Monday night who said his advanced hotel bookings in January were up by nearly 60% on last year. Just like Punxsutawney Phil is a bellwether for what kind of winter we’re going to have, advance hotel bookings are an excellent indicator of what kind of summer we are going to have in Cool Cape May. For those of you who want to stay abreast of all the new openings, closings and location changes, Sue Tischler will be delivering a report in a couple weeks time. Until next time, stay thirsty, my friends.

S

The municipal happenings from the latest meeting in Cape May... By Susan Tischler

o, I was looking out my front door last Tuesday at the still unsalted road I live on – yes, that’s right, I live in Lower Township — and I thought, “Well, I’m not going anywhere tonight.” And then I remembered that Cape May City Council meeting was at 7pm. So, I made a nice cup of cocoa, put on my Dr Denton’s PJs and settled back to watch the show — the live streaming video on TV. I felt like a voyeur. I can see them, but they can’t see me. What fun. It didn’t take long for me to put my cocoa down and sit up and take notice. The way the budget process works is thus — the City Manager presents the budget to city council in January. They mull over it and then it is introduced via a resolution to the public for First Reading in February. A public hearing will be held March 24, at which time council can pass the budget, amend it and pass it, or, if significant changes are made, they hit the reset button and start over. It’s highly unusual for a council member to vote “Nay” on the resolution introducing the budget, but that’s what Jerry Inderwies, Jr did at

the February 17 council meeting. As an aside, let me tell you that in introducing the resolution, Mayor Edward Mahaney acknowledged that the resolution included an amendment to give back $84,000 of the projected $3.8 million budget surplus to the taxpayers, reducing the tax increase to 1 cent instead of the proposed 1.3 cent hike. When it was time for council members to comment, near the end of the meeting, Inderwies said he wanted to explain why, as he put it, “I cannot support even the introduction of the budget without this public safety issue” being addressed. The issue being $70,000 he maintains was cut from

the fire department’s budget. Note that City Manager Bruce MacLeod said at the February 3 meeting that the $70,000 was not cut from the budget but was a savings due to attrition. The former fire chief again chastised MacLeod maintaining that new Fire Chief Alex Coulter presented the City Manager with an “in-depth report” of the fire department and statistics to substantiate why their need for more personnel is critical, but that the report was not made available to all council members. Inderwies said the money should be reinstated and the City Manager and council should “do whatever it takes” to make that happen, including either eliminating one of the new positions budgeted for 2015 or cutting deeper into the surplus. So, here’s what I was wondering — do all the departments submit detailed reports to individual members of council if they need more personnel or is this unique to the fire department? And secondly, is this a case of micro-managing the City Manager — a charge that previously has been leveled

INSIDE CITY HALL From Page 23 against Mayor Mahaney? Or, is this simply a case of a former fire chief standing up for what he thinks is an egregious wrong? Inderwies further cited an incident on Valentine’s Day night in which there was a second ambulance call which did not get answered because they did not have the manpower. He attributed the low staff issue to “poor weather conditions and Valentine’s Day.” What did I learn from this? That those firefighters are a pretty romantic lot. Inderwies said it wasn’t just the ambulance, but the manpower needed to fight a fire. “Obviously you know I know that well and Terri [referring to Deputy Mayor Terri Swain] knows that because someone in her family was affected by the fire and was saved by the fire department.” Well... holy... let’s get personal in a public meeting. He was referring to the fire at the Merion Inn in 2010 in which three people were rescued, one of whom was Erik Watson, Terri’s step-brother. Tragically, two years later, Erik succumbed in another fire, at his Lafayette Street residence. The Deputy Mayor acknowledged her family’s support of the fire and police departments over the years. But when elected to

council, she said she learned to “take the personal out of it when we’re looking at the budget.” She also noted that over the last six years, council has made cuts across the board in both monies and in personnel. Inderwies countered that life and death was not a money issue. Council member Bea Pessagno said she admired the former fire chief’s dedication but reminded him that at the February 3 meeting it was agreed that the problem would be studied for both the fire and police departments so that a long-term solution could be found, not just a Band-Aid fix. She agreed that public safety was a top priority but so was fiscal security. But I find myself wondering: It can’t just be about $70,000. There must be a greater issue behind it. This became a little clearer when, once again, realtor John Fleming came to the podium to ask that question. The problem? Volunteerism. Cape May’s fire department, like many in the state, comprises volunteer fire fighters, career and parttime firefighters and obviously career EMTs (Who wants a volunteer deciding that stroke coming on is just a muscle spasm?). This dependence on volunteers has worked since the inception of fire departments, but it is not working anymore for any number of reasons.

As Inderwies pointed out, we have a city with a majority of second-home owners and those who live here year-round are primarily the elderly — so there is a marginal pool to draw from in the community itself. Of the 15 volunteer fire fighters listed on the department’s website, many are 60 and older. And, if I understood correctly, it seems as though volunteers must be recruited south of the canal. Municipalities can’t poach the talents of other townships. The mayor brought up the second issue — no longer can a volunteer drop by and sign on. Extensive training is involved. Usually people have day jobs — how many can afford that kind of time? Given the extensive training, would they not now be considered a career fire fighter in training anyway? Now, from the fundamental to the superficial. First off, LOVE the beard council member Shaine Meier. Then there’s those stage curtains that provide the backdrop for council meetings. How old are they? I figure they were there when City Hall was a high school. The Sixties? Maybe Curtis Bashaw can have a ball just for decorating the auditorium. He could call it the Deck the Hall Ball. I’m seeing a deep crimson red for the curtains and a soothing cream color for those institutional walls.

The Old Fogey

read in the newspaper that a police dog has been stripped of his badge and drummed out of the force. Well, I say “read” when really I mean “My faithful manservant Kitchener read to me.” Call me a snob, but there are few pleasures better than having someone read the highlights of the newspapers to you in the morning, filtering out the distasteful content and concentrating on Unusual Animal Stories, Conspiracy Theories, Dubious Scientific breakthroughs and Wrongdoings of the Clergy. Anyway, this errant canine was not in Cape May, he was in the mosquito-ridden hellhole they call “Florida”, and it seems he leapt from a patrol car and then bit a donut emporium employee in the leg. This brought to mind Cape May’s experiments with animal law enforcment personnel, some of which have been interesting, some catastrophic and none dull. I think our first, back in the old days, was modeled on New York City’s experiment where they gave the biggest source of trouble — The Irish —

jobs as policement to placate them. Well, we had no specific Irish problem (other than Jimmy O’Quinn, a flaming-haired giant of a man who worked on the roads during the day and drank a bottle of Scotch a night in Cabanas) but we did have a bear problem, and so negotiated with a dozen of the worst to deputize them if they would cease ambushing our honey shipments and interrupting our Dance Nights with their foolish capering (bears love to dance, but their unsually short legs and wide buttocks made even the most elegant steps look fool-

ish). At first the move appeared a success: apart from the occasional mauling when out-of-towners turned a corner and bumped into our Ursine Officers and got all panicky, we were reasonably happy. Sadly, we had neglected to send Ernie Hemingway a telegram about this, and when he arrived off the NYC Express train he encountered a trio of police bears on the platform. It was, I am told, quite the scene out of High Noon, as everyone ducked for cover and the bear cops and Ernie reached for their guns. Ernie won, and since his gun was a blunderbus with a bell end as wide as a spitoon, there was scarce enough left of the bears to talk about. After that, we stuck to dogs (after experimenting with parrots, who talked the talk but didn’t walk the walk), and for a while, Cape May’s Chief of Police was actually Young Albert. What that tiny Yorkie lacked in stature he made up for in attitude, and the streets were empty of criminals, wrongdoers , cats, Shoebies and anyone else who Albert took a dislike to. Of course, he became a tyrant but the trains ran on time.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, murder mystery weekends

ystery stories are a great way to entertain yourself during the winter, but even the best can’t keep you from going stir crazy unless you really get involved. Put aside the usual suspects and break out of your English country house. Bookmark the Agatha Christie novel, save the Broadchurch binge for the next blizzard, and spend a weekend solving a Cape May mystery. Mystery stories have been intriguing us for centuries. With roots going back to the ninth or tenth century, Scheherazade’s story of the three apples in 1001 Nights was a precursor to the modern mystery. In Chinese Gong’an fiction dating to the 1700s, a wise magistrate solves the case. Western fiction had the work of Voltaire in French, Godwin in English, and Bilcher in Danish, before the German E.T.A. Hoffmann introduced readers to mystery staples in 1819 with Das Fraulein von Scuderi. Hoffmann gave us an accused who is innocent, a bumbling policeman, and a perceptive detective. Edgar Allan Poe’s imaginative C. Auguste Dupin

furthered the genre in 1841 and the formula was fully established by Willkie Collins’ The Moonstone in 1868. All of this led up to Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887; Doyle often gets credit for originality when he should get credit for excellence. The Sherlock Holmes stories are stellar examples of the all-seeing detective with an odd hobby, the assistant who serves as narrator, the unforeseen twist and the elementary conclusion. Sherlock and his heirs — like Jessica Fletcher and Phrynie Fisher, Columbo and Monk — retain their popularity.

ALL the PRETTY THINGS. WE HAVE THEM! Our GORGEOUS selection of HANDBAGS, HATS, JEWELRY, SCARVES and other COOL STUFF will SPICE UP all your LOOKS! Open Saturday & Sunday 10-6 thru March

324 WASHINGTON STREET MALL CAPE MAY

You can play detective at one of Cape May’s Murder Mystery weekends March 6, 13 or 27, presented by the Henry Sawyer Inn, the Twin Gables Inn, and the East Lynne Theater Company. You’ll travel to another time and adopt another identity, maybe Charlie Chan or Elliott Ness. Maybe you’re the murderer, or maybe you’re a victim. On Friday night at 6:30, you’ll be be briefed over wine and hors d’oeuvres and assigned a role. Saturday morning is for sleuthing, and Saturday afternoon is free time in Cape May. You have one more chance to examine the evidence over tea before making your report, and then, after dinner at the Washington Inn, the solution will be presented at a dessert reception back at the Henry Sawyer. The cost is $419 plus tax for two people in a deluxe room; upgrade to a two-room suite for an additional $50. Add a 3rd or 4th person in a suite for $119 plus tax for each additional person. For information and reservations, contact the Henry Sawyer Inn at 609-884-5667 or Twin Gables at 609-884-7332.

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve met a woman I like very much. We both lost our spouses in the past three years and feel we are lucky to have found each other. The problem is her daughter. I have no desire to take the place of her father, but the girl is nearly 40 and needs to stop trying to sabotage our relationship. I’ve tried talking to my lady, but she is reluctant to address the matter. It is driving a wedge between us and I am at a loss as to what to do. — Losing Patience Dear Losing Patience Try not to lose your patience but help guide things so that some of the baggage is lost along the way. Sometimes these things take time. What is certain is that there will come a day when you will have to draw a

Wise answers to perplexing questions

line in the sand and when that time comes, you will have to stay firm — kind and loving, but firm. And your lady love will have to choose whether she wants to remain in the past or move forward. Once she takes that lead, the daughter will follow. Dear Answer Lady My parents are planning my upcoming Sweet Sixteen party and I want them to not invite my granny, who likes to be called Cindykins not Granny, and dresses like a

prostitute. She’s sixty years old for cat’s sake — wears low-cut, tight-fitting tops, short skirts, large jewelry and flirts with my high school boyfriends. It’s disgusting and my parents insist on inviting her to all our family functions. I don’t know how my mother lived her own teenage years with a mother like that and my dad just rolls his eyes and laughs. If you tell them not to, I know they will listen to you Answer Lady. — Embarrassed Beyond Belief Dear Embarrassed Beyond Belief I’m afraid the Answer Lady is going to tell you to suck it up. Granny, aka Cindykins (and the Answer Lady is definitely rolling her eyes) absolutely cannot be excluded and if talking to her would do any good, I’m sure your parents would have done so — and most likely have done so on previous occasions, like when she first brought your father home to meet her. Listen, just tell your friends to expect the unexpected in Granny. And think about this — your mother seems to have survived. There is hope for you as well.

LEO is a handsome brindle lad who loves to play. He is great with kids and other dogs, and knows commands like “sit,” “come,” and “wait for food bowl.” He also likes to relax in his crate or simply hang out with his best human (ahem, that could be you). Leo deserves a forever home... how about we make it happen?

«

VICK is a calm, handsome Lab mix who’s been waiting patiently at the shelter since 12/21/13 for a BFF. He is very well behaved, fun-loving and smart; he graduated with honors from the shelter’s CLASS training program. Boy’s got manners! Vick is also used to relaxing in his crate, and his adoption fee is a mere $95.

She is a student in the shelter’s CLASS training program, and doing very well there. Pinky is also crate trained, meaning her transition to a new home will be easy-peasy.

The Movie Column

A

As the Oscars approach, Cape May Film Festival’s Tom Sims reviews Oscar winner “Birdman”

s with any award show (or for that matter any toddler athletic or dance competition), everyone walked away from the 2015 Oscars with a prize. The big winner was Birdman with four Oscars: director, picture, cinematography and screenplay. The bigger winners were anyone who joined us at the Cape May Film Festival’s annual Oscar party at the Mad Batter. Thanks to all who came out! There was no doubt that Birdman would win big. It’s stylish, edgy, extremely wellacted, and (let’s face it) it’s about Hollywood. Hollywood loves movies about itself — even if they’re subpar. Just look at Hugo (2011). Some may ask, “How can you not like Hugo?” I didn’t hate it, I just didn’t think it was worthy of its Oscar nomination for Best Picture. By the way, it didn’t win, was beat out by the modern silent film The Artist, ironically another film about the film industry. So the lesson here is: make a movie about Hollywood and you could very well score Oscar gold. Birdman was a good film — but it had more flaws than other, more worthy

Our guy thinks Birdman was good but annoying in places... do you agree? films. To the good, the film was brilliantly acted and had a great storyline. Michael Keaton plays a successful action hero movie actor who wants to be recognized critically — so he bankrolls his own play adaptation on Broadway as the vehicle to achieve that. The film was shot in long continuous takes, meaning there were few cuts. This type of cinematography works for a classic film like Hitchcock’s Rope (1948) which didn’t move around as much as Birdman. I

found the continuous shot in Birdman distracting and frankly, it made me a bit carsick. Another distraction? The voice of the action hero, Birdman, who throughout the film is inside Keaton’s head making commentary. Lastly — about hearing edgy drumming as background music, and then actually seeing the drummer playing on the screen at the theater where Keaton’s play is taking place — it made me think that Birdman was perhaps too hip for its own good. Unnecessary. All the basic parts where there already — great story, great acting. To me, Boyhood achieved much more in its filming than Birdman, but it wasn’t about Hollywood so it received one Oscar for Patricia Arquette in a supporting role. More about Boyhood in an upcoming column. Meantime, it was also good to see JK Simmons (a veteran character actor) take Oscar for best supporting actor for the great film Whiplash. So do you disagree with me? please let me know. Send your comments to capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

Bird Droppings

C

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

old enough for you? The question has been asked: how do birds beat the cold? The short answer is: they eat. Fuel in the tank plus high metabolism, equals body heat, equals survival. That’s the key: going to bed with food in the crop and being able to find food quickly when you wake (and your energy reserves have been depleted). What this means if you feed birds is making sure your feeders are filled in the late afternoon and at dawn, when birds are most at need. Another trick birds use is going to roost early. Before dark. If you’ve got food in the system, no sense in f lying around wasting energy. Besides, the early bird gets the prime roost spot. That’s the place that is out of the wind, surrounded by insulating vegetation, and maybe facing south and east so you can take advantage of the warming rays of the morning sun. You’ll also want a roost site that is safe so you won’t be disturbed during the night

and be forced to waste energy or find another site in the dark. Where do birds roost? Some snuggle into holly trees or tangles of Virginia creeper. A few use tree cavities. Birds like robins and blackbirds often roost in tall stands of marsh grass. Waterfowl often huddle together on the lee side of ponds. It’s amazing how hardy birds can be. Frozen water causes feeding problems for a number of water birds who need open water to forage — so breaking the ice up

a bit will benefit birds like Virginia Rails who can survive as long as they find some open leeds along the shore. Snow plow drivers that plow up a bit of unpaved roadside win big points with Woodcock, Rusty Blackbirds and robins, Hermit Thrush and assorted sparrows. But anyone with a snow shovel can clear a couple of square yards of snow and help bird species. Remember, the secret to survival is food. Only humans diet after the holidays. For birds in winter, entire days revolve around finding food. And, to a degree, water. I once saw a woodcock probing the soil beneath a dripping outside faucet. Bad fortune for the home owner, good luck for this earthworm eater. As I write this, an Eastern Meadowlark, just landed on the porch of our building. The snow is too deep for this colorful blackbird of grassy fields. Time to shovel. Which will also help me shed a few of those extra holiday ounces I’m carrying. Win/win.
