Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
here are some local business people who mourn the fact that, in their eyes, Cape May stopped becoming a 10-month economy (quite a rarity for an east coast resort town) several years ago, declining in the wake of the glorious days of the 1990s, when the B&B revolution and a small business boom made the city a tourism goldmine. And it’s true — for a while there, midNovember through March were a little too quiet for comfort in America’s Original Seaside Resort, with really only the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts making a fist of it with their Christmas-related tours and trolley rides. But there’s been a sea change in the last five years and, in particular, the last three. Starting with the month of November, the Exit Zero Jazz Festival (launched in 2012) filled the gap left by the dissolution of the Cape May Jazz Festival in 2010. Organizer Michael Kline has built on the success of the previous festival and has, I think it’s fair to say, taken it up a notch in terms of the quality and variety of acts, and the production values. Witness the arrival of six-time
Grammy winner Dr John at the spring festival this May, and the addition of the outdoor stage at the Emlen Physick Estate, which brings a welcome jolt of pzazz to the town’s cultural calendar. The end of November now kicks off the month-long Winter Wonderland festival at Congress Hall, which I believe is going to establish Cape May as one of the most popular east coast holiday destinations. This event hasn’t only turned Congress Hall into a sellout during December — it has also seriously boosted the reservations of other local accommodations. And not only that —
inspired by Winter Wonderland, businesses on the Washington Street Mall stayed open every night in the runup to last Christmas. I think we can assume this will turn into a regular event, making December a mustvisit on the winter calendar. Not much happens in January, of course, EXCEPT that the Exit Zero Burns Supper, held during the third week, has become a sellout, ridiculously fun event which MAY (if I, as the organizer and host, can get my act together) turn into a weekend-long event next year, which will lend a boost to local accommodations and businesses during a time that’s usually as dead as a dodo bird. In February, we now have the annual Ice Ball, the first of which was held in Congress Hall Ballroom two weeks ago. What a glamorous, superbly organized event THAT was! Beautiful ice sculptures and a layout that ran from the ballroom out to a huge tent on the hotel’s grand lawn. I met people who were regular Cape May visitors but who had never been here in February. Not only was the event a huge dollop of fun (I was still feeling

RAMBLINGS FROM THE EDITOR From Page 13 it the next day), it raised at least $170,000 for the Fund for Cape May, an organization founded by Curtis Bashaw which serves only to supply money for improvement projects — first up is the revamp of Rotary Park. I applaud Curtis for walking the walk, contributing actual capital to improving the town, instead of sitting up in the peanut gallery and criticizing. And then at the end of March, we have the now well-established Singer Songwriter Cape May, organized and operated by John Harris, a local guy who’s best known for the Millenium Music Conference in Harrisburg, a supersized version of the Cape May event. John dislikes it when I call his event a festival — it IS actually a conference, attended by singer songwriters from all across America (and often the world), who come to talk about the music industry and to perform in various venues throughout town. But since I don’t actually go to those musical powwows but simply attend and enjoy the various gigs around town, to me it’s a festival. Whatever you call it, Singer Songwriter provides a fantastic jolt of youthful energy into Cape May every year.
And speaking of music, I need to mention the Beatles nights that Terry O’Brien and his Beatles tribute band, the Love Me Dudes, perform at the Boiler Room. The most recent was on Sunday night. And although I was way too cozy at home to venture out into the frozen wastes of downtown Cape May, I hear it was another great night. Add in the fact that birding, so long a staple of the local tourism industry, is becoming more popular and vibrant by the year (I drive to Higbee Beach with the pups pretty much every day, year-round, and the bird-watching demographic is getting seriously young and hip) and you have an economy that has to be the envy of any east coast resort town. I would go as far as to say that Cape May is now an 11-month resort. And that’s fine — we all need the first three weeks of January to hibernate, right? As is our tradition, we will soon publish a story talking about all of the changes to the local business world — but here’s a quick update on a couple changes we’d like to reveal right now. First of all, everyone’s favorite Southwestern restaurant, Gecko’s, is no longer at Carpenter’s Square Mall. Owners Randy and Susi Bithell have moved their business to West Perry Street, where the old
³
Higher Grounds coffee shop was. The name will change slightly — to Gecko’s West Perry Café — and the food will change quite a lot. The couple’s famous salad will remain, along with maybe a couple favorites like the Three Sisters Quesadilla, but mostly everything else will be different. Gecko’s will not offer table service — it’s food to go, though you will be able to sit down and eat in the garden. In their place at Carpenter’s Square Mall will go Yozu, who already operate a superb sushi joint in North Cape May. Meanwhile, there are a couple changes at the building that used to be home to Happy Baby and Louisa’s Chocolate Bar. The Happy Baby store will be moving to the Antiques Emporia building on West Perry Street, owned by the Patrick family. Happy Baby will be run by Alison Patrick, who will keep some of the best brands from the old store, while adding her own favorites. And in the place of Louisa’s Chocolate Bar will appear Neversink: The Magical Little Nautical Store. That is going to be the little sister store of Exit Zero, so we are particularly excited about this and will be telling you LOTS more about that in the coming weeks! Until next week, crank up the heating and insulate those pipes for next year!

The municipal happenings (and fashion statements) from the latest meeting in Cape May... By Susan Tischler
f you haven’t been keeping pace with the comings and goings of Cape May’s local politicians, let me update you. We had an election in November, which produced three new council members: Jerry Inderwies, Jr (son of former Mayor Jerry Inderwies, who preceded current Mayor Ed Mahaney); Bea Pessagno (daughter of the late Mayor Frank Gauvry) who led the Urban Renewal movement in the late sixties; and Shaine Meier, who has the distinction of being if not THE youngest-ever member of council at 26, has to be one of the youngest. They were sworn in January 1 at city council’s reorganization meeting and are now charged with the task of approving the 2015 budget, and figuring out what to do with that vote taken in December in which 286 Cape May voters said they’d rather opt out of the Lower Township school district because they’re carrying more than their fair share of the tax burden. Note that 125 voted to stay in the district. Also note that the total number of registered voters is 1,864. In Lower Township, 5,078 or 91% of voters said not so
so fast Cape May — we think you should stay because your departure will negatively affect our taxes and education programs. I happened to catch the February 3 work session meeting via live video(!) on the city’s website. Curtis Bashaw came to talk about the renovations to Rotary Park, that’s the one with the bandstand behind the Washington Street Mall. In case you don’t know, Curtis is head of Cape Resorts (think Congress Hall, the Virginia Hotel. Beach Plum Farm, the Rusty Nail/Beach Shack and a bunch of other stuff). His grandfather was the late Reverend Carl McIntire who owned Congress Hall and

the Christian Admiral Hotel. So, he knows a thing or two about Cape May history. Curtis and a team of people are looking at the plans originally designed by the students from Temple University a few years back. Those plans were turned over to the engineering firm of Remington & Vernick, and then in turn shown to the Bashaw group. It seems it is a measure to prevent anything plastic or ticky-tacky from creeping into the design. Additionally, Curtis is injecting private money into the project to reinforce his vision of what the park will look like upon completion. So, this, as the mayor pointed out, is a work in progress. Later on, when the meeting turned to budget topics, councilmember Inderwies wasted no time asserting himself. In a prepared statement, he said he wanted the $70,000 cut from the fire department put back. Jerry was the fire chief until his retirement last year and served in said department for 26 years. He also chastised the rest of the

INSIDE CITY HALL From Page 23 council members for not responding to the new fire chief, Alex Coulter, when he emailed them an invite to come take a look at the fire department and have a chat. Councilmember Pessagno and Mayor Mahaney both said they did not respond because it was the city manager’s job to talk to department personnel. Deputy Mayor Swain said she did not receive the email. Shaine Meier stayed quiet. City Manager Bruce MacLeod said the $75,000 was not cut from the budget but was a savings due to attrition. Jerry shot back that volunteerism is down and the department needs more personnel to cover the loss. Deputy Mayor Terri Swain asked him where the money was coming from to reinstate it. He said that it wasn’t being reinstated. It just needed to be left alone. There was also talk about giving the taxpayers back some of the $3.8 million budget surplus. Mayor Mahaney said they would be taking a closer look at the fire and police department budget. Bruce MacLeod explained that the city has to maintain a surplus in order to preserve a strong bond rating. To me, it’s like making your guests dessert, and then telling them they can’t have it (but
they can look at it). Well, in this case the taxpayers might get a small piece of the pie, but will they have to give it back later? The best part of any council meeting is usually the public comment portion at the end. Two of the reporters who cover city council had already left at this point. For me, this is when it gets interesting. Anyone who takes the time to sit through discussion of the difference between a budget cut, a reinstatement or a budget savings due to attrition must have something on his or her mind — such as Cape May realtor John Fleming. John talked about taxes, the budget and the school district dilemma — he asked council to honor the wishes of the voters, singling out the new council members and reminding them of their promises to abide by the “will of the people.” As he was walking away, Jerry Inderwies said he wanted to clarify a few things, among them that the December school district vote was not necessarily a mandate when you look at the total number of voters (1,864) versus those who voted (411). Fleming retorted that was the very definition of an election — a decision based on who does vote, not on who doesn’t. Jerry maintained the vote was not necessarily a reflection of the community’s wishes. John reminded the three new council mem-
bers that if they took that logic, the three of them may not be sitting in those seats. So, is this a signal that the new council will opt not to take the matter to court? Will they stay or will they go? Watch this space. Now let’s get down to what is really important — visuals. Thank god for councilmember Bea Pessagno who wore a vibrant red jacket which stood out against that sea of grey and black. Remember folks, it’s showtime now that every council session is watched by thousands — well hundreds — well a lot more than watched before. It’s tough with the guys — men’s suits seem to be run the gamut of greys, blues and blacks. I suggest a sparkly tie to break up the malaise. The City Manager is a natty dresser. And that dashing City Solicitor Tony Monzo could model for Esquire. Come on guys, I’m betting you have some colorful ties in those closets. As for Shaine and Jerry — I’m thinking dress shirts with color to break up those dark suits and jackets. The mayor? He has to look dignified, so I’ll leave him alone — for now. Besides, he sits between Bea Pessagno and Terri Swain (I’m thinking pink for the deputy mayor). I see a nice lime green and pretty purple for City Clerk Louise Commiskey and her able assistant Deputy Clerk Patty Harbora. Yes, I like that visual.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
was taken to watch that fascinating documentary, Frozen, at a local cinema by one of my hundreds of tiny feral great-grandchildren last week. I must say I enjoyed it, other than than ludicrous snowman. And I was reminded of the winters we used to have here in Cape May. That castle the admirable lesbian princess built in the mountains? That was rather splendid. And I was not the only one to be disappointed when it all melted. Of course, in My Day, we had Cold (as opposed to cold) winters every year, often twice a year. Why, I remember one time we were all huddled round the fire in our mammoth-skin cloaks (it was during the mini Ice Age of the 1800s) and realising that the flames had frozen solid. We all broke small pieces off and kept them in our pockets to warm our hands. In fact, we all had to move ever-so-slowly for those weeks, as an accidental brush up against someone could cause them to shatter into tiny surprisedlooking (and rather gross) ice crystals. I myself only survived by drinking a bottle of
whisky a day, as a form of anti-freeze. It had the happy side-effect of making me so drunk that when I rounded the corner to Beach, and encountered a saber-toother tiger, I merely laughed a cloud of 100 per cent proof frozen mist in his face and escaped as he tried to wipe his stinging eyes with his paws. It was not all bad in those days: we had ice skating for 11 months of the year and we built the biggest snowman ever assembled: he was 200 feet tall with blazing blue ice eyes and arms made from blasted oaks. The people of Wildwood even began to worship
him as a diety, and there are some who say they still do, in the darkest winters. Also, we did not have to go to the trouble of fishing: we simply skated across the frozen beach and gathered up ice blocks containing fish, crabs, lobsters and the occasional whale. Oh, you say, what about the frostbite? Well, it’s true that all of us from those days lack the boring, “vanilla” number of extremities, and that my hats have to be built up on the left side to make up for the part of my ear that snapped off when I was struck on the head by a fragment of frozen cumulous cloud. So do not complain about this “cold” weather. Cold, to me, is when you wake up in the morning and realise you have slipped into a state of near-cryogenic hibernation, and that your heart is beating only once a minute. Cold is when you have to nip out on to the porch with a shovel and scoop up some frozen air to defrost on the stove you you can breathe. Cold is when you plunge your hands into the ice compartment of the freezer to warm up a little.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, gardening workshops
ou may not remember when you first sprouted your green thumb. Maybe it was when a kindergarten teacher put radish seeds in your hand and helped you plant them in a paper cup. Maybe it was the sight of a pumpkin growing up accidentally from the remnants of last year’s smashed jack-o-lantern, or maybe it was the taste of a freshly-picked carrot your neighbor let you harvest from his garden. This year, take your green thumb to a deeper shade with a gardening workshop. The Nature Center of Cape May offers a series of six gardening workshops led by Pat Sutton, an experienced naturalist and educator with a contagious sense of wonder. She is the co-author (with her husband Clay) of Birds and Birding at Cape May, How to Spot Butterflies, How to Spot Hawks & Eagles and How to Spot an Owl, as well as numerous other publications. Sutton emphasizes native plants and wildlife-friendly practices. With native plants, your garden can become drought tolerant and easier to maintain, giving you more time to enjoy it. Sutton will also teach
you how to draw birds and butterflies to your home while repelling pests and invasive plants. By midsummer, you could be strolling your backyard wonderland like a Disney princess, sipping lemonade while butterflies surround your head like a halo. Each workshop lasts five hours, provides specific information for your own garden, and includes visits to local teaching gardens. There will also be a question-and-answer session and a working lunch where participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own property. You can plan and erase

and rearrange your garden before it’s even warm enough to start digging. Your green thumb will be itching to get to work. Over the years, thousands of gardeners have taken these workshops, and the shared enjoyment creates a fertile environment for inspiration. As ideas and plants are swapped among the participants, friendships bloom along with beautiful backyards. Although each workshop can stand alone, each builds on the last, and the first lecture is the backbone of the series. Each workshop is $35 for members of NJ Audubon Society, $45 for nonmembers. Sign up for any three workshops and there is a discount ($75 members, $105 nonmembers). Register through NJ Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May, 609-898-8848. They ask that you leave a message if you reach the machine and they’ll get back to you. Pre-registration is required. The workshops will be held in Goshen at the Cape May Bird Observatory Center for Research and Education, 600 Route 47 North, Cape May Court House, and NOT at the Nature Center location in Cape May.

Tony Genaro, being surprised. For those who don’t get the Crossover reference, when Cubs Scouts transition into boy scouting they crossover into Boy Scouts. Tony’s youngest son, Troy, is crossing over into Boy Scouts in March. Tony, who has led the West Cape May Cub Scout pack for the past 10 years, will be crossing over, too. Jerry Kronemeyer will replace Tony as Pack Master of Cub Scouts.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a huge crush on a man who works in the office upstairs. Occasionally, I need to meet with him to be briefed on matters concerning my clients. Recently, one of the meetings meant being alone with him in the office for two hours. I washed my hair, carefully put on my makeup, wore my best dress and walked in confident. I was thrilled until I left the meeting and ran into someone in the hallway, who pointed out that I had a booger hanging from my nose. How will I ever face him again? How do I recover from this humiliation? — Deflated Ego Dear Deflated Ego How do you recover? You face him as soon as possible to erase the memory of your booger infestation from his mind. You move

on hoping for another mono-y-mono. Better yet, the Answer Lady is confident you are clever enough to concoct some excuse to make another meeting happen. Wear something with a little cleavage. It is the Answer Lady’s experience that once a man gets a glimpse of cleavage all will be forgotten. Literally. Dear Answer Lady Every year my buddies and I get together, most recently for the Super Bowl. The next
gathering will be for March Madness and then baseball season begins. I love my friends. We’ve been together since high school, through college, weddings and kids. But I hate sports. I’ve pretended to like them all my life to fit in and as my 40th birthday approaches, I’m tired of the pretense. What do I do? — A Phoney Baloney Dear Phoney Baloney Poor thing. You have to man up, baby. Why not have a coming-out party? You’ve been friends all your lives — there has to more of a common bond than just sports. The thing about sports though is that it is a fine excuse for a party, so you need to come up with some other reasons. There are a lot of holidays which could serve as nicely for a gathering of the clan. St Swithin’s Day comes to mind. St Patty’s Day, Bastille Day. The big holidays — Easter, Christmas et al might not be good choices since they conflict with family fetes. That said — there’s nothing wrong with going to sports-related parties and ignoring the game. Women have been doing it for years.

GUCCI is a happy girl who loves to play fetch in the yard with the shelter volunteers. She was brought in after being abandoned, but that hasn’t affected her sweet disposition one bit. Gucci is smart and loves to work with people. She is a student in the shelter’s Canine Life and Social Skills training program and excels in her studies.
«
CHASE graduated with honors from the shelter’s Canine Life and Social Skills Training Program, because he is such a polite boy. Chase is also crate trained — he likes it!— and he gets along with other dogs and kids. (No intel on cats yet.) His brother already got adopted, meaning this cool guy’s alone, so have a heart, will ya?
«
PINKY is a fun girl who loves working with people. She’s been at the shelter for more than a year, because by some weird twist of fate, no one has scooped this catch up yet. She is a student in the shelter’s CLASS training program, and doing very well there. Pinky is also crate trained, meaning her transition to a new home will be easy-peasy.

The Movie Column
As the Oscars approach, Cape May Film Festival’s Tom Sims reviews “Whiplash” It’s Oscar time, and in Cape May that means party time. Join us this Sunday (that’s right — the Oscars are this Sunday) from 5-8pm at the Mad Batter for our annual Oscar Party. I recently watched one of my two likely candidates for Best Picture award, Boyhood. It deserves to be on the Oscar nominations for Best Picture, and well deserved, but that doesn’t make it my favorite. No that film — though not necessarily one that I think will win — is Whiplash. The movie tells the story of Andrew Niemann, who is played by Miles Teller (the actor has a striking resemblance to a young John Cusack). He is a drumming student at an elite conservatory in Manhattan and dreams of becoming the next Buddy Rich. Andrew is dedicated to percussion perfection with hours spent in practice. He meets Terrence Fletcher (played by J.K. Simmons) who runs the studio band that plays for high stakes competitions to be recognized by the top influencers in the New York City music scene.
Whiplash might not be for everyone, but it’s a dynamic piece of movie-making and might yet make an impact come Oscar time. Fletcher invites Andrew to try out for his band, and the drummer is ecstatic. It is in the studio session that he sees Fletcher’s true madness. The band leader is no benevolent music lover but rather an abusive drill sergeant who will go to any length to drive his students to their best work. In what only can be described as a rollercoaster ride of emotions, Andrew is both praised and violently scorned by Fletcher. Whiplash is not for everyone, I know that.
It’s raw and harsh. Simmons delivery in the role is uncanny and never misses a measure during his spews of hate speech. He’s won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor, and he’s up for Oscar in the same category. Simmons has always been a favorite of mine. He’s been a regular in Jason Reitman films, such as Up in the Air (2009) and Juno (2007). You’ll recognize him when you see him — and you’ll likely be seeing more of him now. This film is remarkable, with an energy that has won it critical acclaim as well as the positive reaction of audiences. I guess it resonates with people because we’ve all had a Terrence Fletcher in our past, that person (and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a professor) that uses strong-arm tactics to drive you further. Apart from subtle storyline flaws that don’t reveal themselves until you sit through it twice (which I did), this film delivers. Join us this Sunday, February 22, to talk about this and all your other favorite films at this year’s Cape May Film Society Oscar Party at Mad Batter, at 5pm!

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
imes were, and not long ago, I used to spend an entire weekend trying to get a glimpse of a Bald Eagle. This necessitated miles of driving. Bushwhacking to secluded haunts where the then-endangered species found the solitude they craved. It is, therefore, almost with embarrassment* that I relate that recently, in Cumberland County, NJ, I enjoyed the sight of nine birds in view at once — three of them, all adults, were perched no more than seventy yards away and less than two hundred yards from an occupied home. *Embarrassment and joy — and kudos to our species for working to restore the bird’s population to healthy levels. Why the concentration? First, and most significantly, there are lots of bald eagles these days. Second, many eagles elect to winter on New Jersey’s Bayshore. Being primarily fish eaters, bald eagles seek out open, unfrozen water. In February, winter temperatures com-
monly cause more northern lakes and rivers to freeze, sending eagles south in search of open, fish and waterfowl bearing water. The day I encountered my glut of birds was unusually cold and it came on the heels of a prolonged cold snap. Even in South Jersey, open water was in short supply. The lake that hosted my birds is a sand plant lake that is deeper than most, so it remained unfrozen. It also is surrounded by large, trees with sturdy eagle
limbs and lots of no trespassing signs. I was parked on a public road. No breach of the law or eagle etiquette. Actually had I seen the eagles perched so close, I wouldn’t have stopped. Seventy yards is well within the f lush distance of adult bald eagles. Had the birds not grown habituated to the people in the lakeside home, it is certain they would have f lown — not left the area, perhaps, but wasted energy needlessly. So if you are interested in seeing a grand bird, take a day trip up to the marshes south of Dividing Creek, heart of eagle country New Jersey and do it before March, when spring weather will prompt many birds to head north. Where’s the magic lake? Sorry, can’t tell you. Just watch the eagles — they’ll lead you to it. For more information on bird-watching in Cape May, go online to www.bird.capemay.org and your eyes will be opened to a whole newwonderful world of nature.
