The Lady Tigers Had A Roaring Season

Lower Cape May Regional High School’s women’s basketball team, the Lady Tigers, took home the South Jersey title this year, becoming the first group to claim that championship in program history. These photos were taken before the school’s playoff game with the state’s number one ranked Manasquan last Thursday. Unfortunately, that’s where the season ended for the Lady Tigers. Hats off to a spectacular run! More photos inside. Aleksey Moryakov

Ramblings From The Editors

D

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Diane Stopyra

espite the mess regarding the demotion of Chief Rob Sheehan — more on that next week — Cape May is still making headlines in a positive way. Previously, we were ranked as fifth best beach town in America by Parents magazine, as one of the 10 coolest small towns in America by Budget Travel, and as one of the sexiest seaside resorts by datingadvice.com. Now the city is on a map of the ultimate cross-country travel route, as laid out by Michigan data scientist Randy Olson. He used algorithms to determine a 12,290-mile round-trip adventure that hits on the nation’s top-ranked TripAdvisor cities, including Cape Island. You can check it out on Olson’s blog: randalolson.com. As for other positive things happening in town, while city council undertakes damage control (again, more on that next week), there are a few. For starters, Exit Zero has been completed. We’re not referring to ourselves here, but the zero-energy home on Roslyn Avenue in North Cape May nicknamed Exit Zero house. The 1,600-square-foot property, which we first reported on in 2013, is the brainchild of construction and product devel-

opment firm Energy Reconsidered, based in Bluebell, Pennsylvania. Via technology like solar paneling, a solar hot-water system, and a sophisticated heat-recovery system that captures escaping air in an exhaust fan and recycles it back inside, as well as a layout conducive to conservation, the bungalow is generating more energy than it’s using. “We knocked the existing home down, reinsulated the foundation, and built on top of that, keeping the footprint the same,” says Energy Reconsidered’s Michael Sebright. “Now, the number of air changes, or the number of times the air is reheated per hour, is 1.4.

For a typical home, that number is eight. It’s the first Department of Energy-sanctioned, zero-energy-ready home in the state.” It’s a concept that might not take long to catch on. This area, Michael says, is especially conducive to such a model, and the tax-benefits are worth looking into. “When a home is only being used half the year, like many of the properties here, it’s easy to build a cost-effective system,” he says, adding how much fun he had working in Cape May… and taking lunches at the Lobster House. Exit Zero has been awarded the Department of Energy’s Home Housing Innovation Award for 2014 in the custom category. Congratulations, guys. Speaking of energy, Cape May Brewing Company is amping up the voltage in their new 15,000-square-foot warehouse space at Cape May Airport. Their new 30-barrel brew house, capable of producing 15,000 barrels a year, is set to be delivered today. Because CMB is keeping their current 15-barrel brewhouse, they’ll become the only company with two operating production breweries in the state. Cheers! Until next time, stay positive, Cape May.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

cannot abide a man who is fainthearted about his baldiness. Obviously, I myself wear an extravagant powdered wig from time to time, but under that I have a full head of legandary D’Catur hair (the hair gene is passed down through the maternal line, and ensures that every D’Catur possesses an excess of luxuriant body fur — the late lamented Ma D’Catur was thrice-winner of the Cape May and Environs Mustache Contest, and woe betide anyone who dared voice a negative opinion of hirsute women in her hearing. In my case, it means a head of thick black hair that time does nothing to dull: when I am not be-wigged, I sometimes brush my temples with white emulsion paint to make myself look more distinguished and less baby-faced. And I do admire a man who, when he feels the cold winter wind and blazing summer sun on the crown of his head, simply shaves his entire dome rather than investing in sensational potions and foams to rub on his pate. I of course did invent such a cream,

out of scientific curiosity: it does, in 100 per cent of cases, restore full hair cover, but with the unfortunate side efeect of that hair covering every inch of the subject’s body. My faithful manservant Kitchener has lost his hair, and has come up with the novel solution of carefully slicing hair from a range of stuffed animals in the mansion’s West Wing, and wearing the pelts on his head, secured by a length of garden twine. He does not, I should mention, choose animals with human-like hair: rather he steps out with a patch of leopard-skin (along with

the ears) on his head, or a length of polarbear pelt (the latter gives him an uncanny resemblance to Andy Warhol.) Once in a while, Kitchener strikes a deal with the current Young Albert, and that canine perches atop his head for a stroll around town. The specifics of the deal are not clear to me, but I believe Kitchener uses the novelty value of a Yorkshire Terrier on head to strike up conversations with ladies, and Albert is well placed to snap passing seagulls from the air. It is not a pretty spectacle for unsuspecting tourists, that of a man’s hair messily consuming a bird, but Cape May is not for the faint-hearted. Actually, that was, for a short time, the city’s official slogan, replacing the honest but not popular: “Cape May: You Are Not Welcome Here and We May Kill You If You Annoy Us. Which You Will.” In time, we transitioned to: “Cape May: America’s Unoriginal Seaside Town”, which over the years was made a little more enticing. I think we are about to be “Cape May: Better Than Where You Come From”, which will be nice.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, retail therapy

rankiness has been epidemic this winter. You caught it from the man who stole your shoveled-out parking space, and you spread it to the kids with cabin fever. Cure yourself with some retail therapy in Cape May. The term dates back to 1986, when the Chicago Tribune wrote that Americans nursed “our psychic ills through retail therapy.” Although it is a faintly comic phrase studies show that buying things really can cheer you up, and getting out of the house to do it works better than shopping online or through catalogs. There is something positive about touching an item, trying it on, and talking to people as you shop. In ancient Greece, people went to the agora for fish, candy, shoes and jewelry and stayed to exchange ideas. The busy marketplace became a stage for Socrates to direct his questions to crowds of Athenian youth. Plato was inspired there. Diogenes practiced his philosophical shenanigans amidst the shoppers, begging, mocking other philosophers, and sleeping in a large ceramic

tub. Later, in Rome, citizens gathered at the forum to chat about current events while shopping for household goods and luxuries like silk. Their conspicuous consumption provided fodder for satirists poking fun at Roman society. Colonists in early America got their news at the market, and fed their revolutionary fervor here. Nineteenth century American shoppers flocked to department stores, where shopping became a more luxurious, less public experience. The 20thcentury shopping mall attempted to recreate the public marketplace, but standardized,

climate-controlled interiors fell out of favor. Today, malls are closing across the country as shoppers seek a return to the smaller, less cookie-cutter marketplace. Cape Ma yprovides plenty of opportunities to stroll and shop and chat with real people, and the local politics give you plenty to talk about. We’re a mite bit biased, but we recommend starting at Exit Zero! After that, pick up spring decorations at Cape May Wicker or Import Bazaar. Pick out clothes for stylish men at Galvanic, and for stylish women at Victorious, Caroline, or Pink. Visit Italian Garden for luxurious skin creams, or Henry’s or Mary Ann’s for jewelry. Kaleidoscope and Just for Laughs have funny gifts for anyone who needs a laugh. Red Oak Trading has unusual handbags and hats, and West End Garage has unusual everything. Good Scents indulges your nose and ears, and specialty food shops indulge your taste buds. Fans of Diogenes can visit rubber duckies in the bathtub at Bath Time. Mix your own soaps at A Place on Earth. Poof — you’re cured!

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I recently lost my job as police chief and I don’t know what to do. I think it’s important to keep to a routine, so I drive to Wawa for my morning coffee and a chance to see my buddies. But then, I find myself sitting at home in my leather La-Z-Boy watching Days of Our Lives and the Lifetime channel all day. I try not to listen to the police radio, but it’s hard to resist. My lawyer says there is a good chance I will be rehired, but if not, what is my future? Body guard to the rich and famous? —Crest Fallen Dear Crest Fallen Fear not. The Answer Lady is confident you will be back in the saddle in no time. The Answer Lady is sympathetic. She lost her job a while back and soothed

Wise answers to perplexing questions

her assuaged feelings by devoting herself to hours of memoir writing, mostly plotting the demise of her former boss and certain work colleagues. I advise you to do the same. Stop going to Wawa. Go to Dellas Five & Dime Soda Fountain. Have your coffee there and start writing in the soothing comfort of their 50s décor. It will be therapeutic and, no doubt, will also turn into a best seller. And get out of that La-Z-Boy. Set up a workout routine. Mark Chamberlain at

North Beach Gym will be glad to help. Dear Answer Lady I am mayor of a small town and lately, I am not feeling the love. It shows itself in small ways. When I go to church on Sunday, I am the only one sitting on that side of the church. When I am seated in a restaurant, people near me immediately ask for their check. I’m sure I am imagining all this, but I fear I might have what people often refer to as the blues. I need to get my mojo back. How can I do that, Answer Lady? — Patch of Blue Dear Blue The Answer Lady has just the answer – Cape May Day Spa. Go the whole hog with a Perfect Escape, and get pampered with an aromatherapy salt scrub followed by an aromatherapy Swedish massage and a facial. But the best is yet to come. Savor that cup of Chai while receiving a rosemary mint pedicure and manicure. Ease back into reality with a refreshing salad and a cheese and fruit plate. When you walk out, so will those blues.

XENA is a wonderfully sweet girl who loves to play and snuggle up. She is good with kids and enjoys just being with people. While she’s more “lovebug” than “warrior princess,” Xena is a star in our eyes. Take her home, and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about.

DASH wants to have fun! He’s an adorable attention hog, so he’d like to be your only pet. He’s very well-mannered, and knows lots of cool tricks like “sit”... and how to worm his way into your heart forever.

PUNKEY is single and ready to mingle... with you. His previous owner had to go away, and he couldn’t come with. Pretty sad, eh? You could make it a whole lot less sad by bringing Punkey home. We promise, he’s the total opposite of a punk.

«

GLINDA was dumped on the side of the road. Can you believe that? Who would abandon such a perfect cat?! Luckily, she’s still as sweet as can be. No hard feelings here. In fact, Glinda is ready as can be for a forever home and a family to love, love, love.

The Movie Column

J

Maureen Hansberry, Member of Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Still Alice”

ulianne Moore won the Oscar this year for Best Actress, her first after five nominations. The performance for which she won, as the lead in the film Still Alice, was worthy of the award. The movie tells the story of a linguistics professor who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As the premise reveals, this is not an uplifting movie. In fact, it never really picks you up, but that doesn’t make it a bad film. We can relate to the lead character in Still Alice. We can relate to her family that struggles with the disease. More importantly, Moore delivers an outstanding performance as we see her get progressively worse. She has an idyllic family, the American dream. Her husband (played by Alec Baldwin) is a doctor, and her children have the ordinary hopes and dreams you would expect. At first, Alice begins forgetting simple things, where she left her keys. Completely believable (for people my age anyway). She then begins to forget words, again not so drastic except that she’s a renowned linguist so it is cause for concern. When she begins

to forget where she is or how she got there, it’s clear the problem has worsened — and it’s very frightening for us in the audience. What you see unfold (and not within two decades but within two years) is a moving transformation that leaves both her and the movie-goer speechless. There is one particularly moving scene where Alice addresses a support group for Alzheimer’s. She tells her life story, how she used to be a teacher, how the disease is

Julianne Moore earned has earned her Oscar cred, says Maureen

affecting her. It’s completely believable and unbelievably sad, but it is one of the more compelling and engaging stories I’ve seen. Other films have been nominated for an Oscar that have been as depressing as Still Alice. For example, I know in Cape May everybody loved Beasts of the Southern Wild when it was screened a couple of years ago at the festival. That film was beautifully shot, but it was a downer for sure — and the difference between that and Still Alice is that I could not relate to the characters in Beasts. When am I ever going to live in a flood-ravaged outland like the one depicted in that film? So people will read the reviews or see the summary on Netflix and say, “That’s not for me.” If that’s the case, so be it — move on to watch something else. But if you’re won over by excellent acting and a story well told, Still Alice delivers in a way that may surprise you. See any good films lately? One quick email to capemayfilm@hotmail.com gets your review started. We’ll call you to write your review!

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ey. Slow down. You’re killing birds. When snow covers the landscape many bird species are squeezed to the icy rim. Many ground-foraging species like robin, white-throated sparrow, American woodcock and hermit thrush, forage on roadsides where the snow plow has over stepped the pavement. You drive by. Birds panic and flush and disappear in a ball of feathers. It’s not always safe to slow down suddenly on icy roads. The birds best defense is for you to simply drive according to conditions and give them a fighting chance. Birds have quick reflexes but they are no match for cars going 50-60 mph. Isn’t getting to your destination a couple minutes later worth the life of a robin? A couple of days ago I counted 14 dead robins on Rt 47 between Green Creek and Dennisville. These just include the birds that landed on the road. The real death tole measured in birds pinged back into the woods or lodged in the grill is higher. So do your part to be part of a kinder, gentler planet. Give birds a break by reducing

your speed when you navigate by woodlands or find stretches of roadway where numbers of birds are clustered along roadsides. Some altercations are unavoidable. I was responsible for the death of a white-throated sparrow on Sunday. I saw the bird in plenty of time but the road was icy and sure enough some moron was hugging my bumper. Safety first. Ping! Birds have a lot to deal with these days. Wind turbines, glass windows, utility lines, feral, cats and cars. Every little bit done to

reduce the threats, helps. We in Cape May have a special obligation because Cape May not only concentrates birds during migration, it is a winter a stronghold for many species. This past weekend I was leading a Break into Birding Workshop. In two days we tallied 66 species. Not bad for late February when populations have been attrited by starvation, predation and assorted accidents. Actually the number of bird species that spend the winter in Cape May is equal to the number that are found here during the summer. So, please slow down, give our winter resident birds a break. Somewhere in Quebec there is a family eagerly anticipating the return of the hermit thrush that nests in the woods beside their house. It is indeed a small world and a closed system. If everyone does their part we’ll continue to enjoy a world of diverse natural riches. Which is one of the reasons you live here, right? On behalf op the woodcock feeding along Sunset Boulevard, I thank you.
