Ramblings From The Editor
O
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ccasionally, I am asked why I left my native Scotland to start a new life in the States. The answer is that I actually left Scotland in 1992 for a plum job on a national newspaper in London, and it was only after that (1998) that I moved across the Atlantic. The next question is usually — Do you miss it? Well, think about the weather over the last five weeks and then imagine what my answer is. This is not to say that I would never return to Scotland because it rains all the time. That would seem a little shallow, right? There are many reasons why I will never return to live in Scotland, and why Cape May will be my forever home. But I have to admit... weather IS important. Living in Scotland (or anywhere in Britain, really) is, to quote the writer Bill Bryson, like living under a giant tupperware bowl. It’s always kinda gray. (And it rains a lot.) As a result, the annual two-week family vacation in Scotland is of huge
importance. Seriously huge importance. Families with average incomes will easily spend $8,000 on a trip to Spain or Florida or Greece. The guarantee of sunshine is that important. Which is why great friends of mine from Scotland were so traumatized when they came to Cape May for two weeks in June, 2006 and it rained almost every day. I’ve never trusted June since then. (And my friends never returned.) I’m
beginning to worry that this June might run along similar lines. At the reopening of Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille last week, the wise, outdoorsy Duck Menz told me he had a feeling in his bones that we were in for a rainy May and June. I’m not sure that Duck is a seasoned meteorologist but he seemed pretty sure of himself. Hope you’re wrong Duck. Speaking of Harry’s, the Hirsch family have done a great job of renovating their restaurant. The new outdoor/indoor bar is a sweet idea — sad to say that its versatility was put to the test during last Thursday’s rainfall. This is going to be a special year for the Hirsch family — their Montreal Beach Resort is 50 years old. There will be a bunch of celebrations to mark the event, along with the launch of a coffee table book called A Cape May Story (written by my wife Diane Stopyra and produced by Exit Zero), which details the fascinating history of the hotel and the family. This year also marks another hotel

Page 14 birthday — the 200th anniversary of Congress Hall. And if you’ve been paying attention you’ll know we did a book about that, too, Tommy’s Folly. The Congress Hall celebrations begin on Friday, May 29 when the whole town is invited to tour the newly renovated guest rooms, starting at 4:30pm. Then at 7pm the Bay Atlantic Symphony Orchestra will play a free concert on the lawn (assuming the damn rain stays away). And then birthday cake and champagne will be served in the ballroom. Earlier in the evening, myself and Curtis Bashaw, managing partner of Cape Resorts, will be signing copies of Tommy’s Folly. Hope to see you then. So, weather permitting, aren’t you excited about revisiting all of the Cape May startof-summer traditions? That first ice-cold beer of the year at the Rusty Nail, while digging your toes into the sand. The first exotic meal at 410 Bank Street. Cocktails on the Schooner at the Lobster House; on the porch at the Virginia hotel and Inn of Cape May; at the Ocean Club Hotel’s Tiki Ten35 bar; on the old rocking chairs of the Chalfonte Hotel; on the decks at Harbor View and Harpoon Henry’s; at the Congress Hall pool bar, or the hotel’s Adirondack chairs. Then there’s hanging out on the deck of Cape May Winery and enjoying the cool vibe at Hawk Haven Vineyard’s Saturdays on the Crushpad. And the start of new traditions — breakfast at the new Lucky Bones Beach Grill is on my to-do list, and you can’t miss breakfast or lunch at the new Beach Plum Farm Kitchen in West Cape May. So many al fresco options. So much to love about Cape May in the summer. Now, in the immortal words of Credence... who’ll stop the rain?

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, great local theater
mericans are inspired by Abraham Lincoln. Our 16th president set the standard for success through hard work, for politics as public service, for adaptability, and for strength in the face of adversity. He sought counsel from a team of rivals but owned the hard decisions. He was imperfect, yet he did great things. No wonder so many of us try to claim a connection to the Great Emancipator. The idea that a simple country boy could grow up to be precisely the leader the nation needed during its greatest crisis gives us all hope. Contrary to a popular local myth, Abraham Lincoln never had a chance to visit Cape May. A local inn has a record of an “A. Lincoln and wife” visiting during the 1840s, but the Abe we know and love was in a courtroom in Illinois on that day. Since he wasn’t famous yet, the name probably wasn’t a cover for a secret romantic rendezvous — in some places, it was once illegal to rent a room to an unmarried couple, so innkeepers met a lot of Mr and Mrs Washingtons along with many Smiths and Joneses. (There are still places
in the world where it’s illegal for unmarried couples to share a room. Ask a hotelie friend for some of the funny fake names they have encountered.) But Abraham Lincoln never slept here. Rather, it was likely a Philadelphia businessman with the same name. Had Lincoln lived, perhaps he would have spent some of his retirement enjoying our ocean breezes. Five other sitting presidents have visited — Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant, Chester Arthur and Benjamin Harrison all escaped the summer heat to cool off in
Cape May. The East Lynne Theater Company lets you get a little closer to Abraham Lincoln with its next show, Mr Lincoln. I’m a big fan of the East Lynne and its performance space, the First Presbyterian Church, and I look forward to a confessional quality as Abe tell his story in flashback. Mr Lincoln, by Herbert Mitgang, starring Tom Byrn and directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, runs from May 11 through May 21 at the East Lynne Theater Company. Tickets are $32 for adults, $27 for seniors, $17 for students, veterans, and active duty military, and free for children 12 and under. For more information, visit eastlynnetheater.org. Cape May Stage offers a different story set in the same time period. The Whipping Man is set in 1865 and explores the relationship between a wounded soldier and the two former slaves who care for him. This drama is appropriate for ages over 16. The Whipping Man runs from May 25 through June 24. Tickets range form $18 to $38, and subscriptions are available. For more information visit capemaystage.org.

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
will not have a computer in the house. Not since that time that snakeoil salesman, Richard Nixon, persuaded me to take a “mainframe” computer that he said the military “weren’t ready for yet”. “It will be just the business,” he said, “for running Cape May properly.” Well, the damn thing arrived by a convoy of black trucks in the dead of a stormy night and by the time a small army of nervous technicians took up most of the tower on the East Wing. I must say, these fellas were so desperate to be out of here that it gave me pause, but by the time I raised a hand to ask some questions, they were off in a screech of tires and a faint cry of what I could have sworn was “good luck, sucker!” A sudden flash of lightning coincided with the machine starting up, and blow me down with a feather if the flashing cathode ray tubes along its front didn’t form a horrible smiling face with red eyes. At that precise moment every light in Cape May flickered and went out, and from the bowels of the machine came a voice not unlike that of the late great actor James Mason. “I am connected to and
in full control of every military and civilian computer network on the planet! Ask me anything you wish, puny mortals!” it commanded, and just as I was about enquire as to whether it was actually possible to make me a proper hot chocolate with skim milk , my faithless manservant, Kitchener, blurted out “Is there a god?” and a second lightning bolt speared through the open window and melted the on/ off switch, and the voice declared: “There is now!” Anyway, never again. Wait, what? What happened next, I hear you ask? Oh, that, well, as it happened Young Albert chose that
moment to wander in and cock his leg against the computer god’s air intake, and the stream of urine shorted it out completely. We of course sealed the room up and put a punchcard into the command slot while it was buzzing and incoherent, that ensured it would not wake for centures, or maybe 2016: I forget which. So, you will understand my hesitation about having anything machinelike and sentient in the house, and we are very rigorous in checking visitors and, should they be found to be inorganic (much like that documentary from the future, Terminator) we destroy them by fire and electromagnet. They are getting smarter, too, pretending to be “campaign pollsters” and “Mormons” and suchlike, but we are not so easily fooled! I ask a few clever questions designed to trick any machine, such as “when is a door not a door?” (the answer is, of course, “when it is ajar”) and even a moment’s hesitation sends them down the secret trapdoor to the compactor. Also, Shoebies and people from Philly, but again, we need to be vigilant against all kinds of invasion.

Bird Droppings
Y
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ou probably noticed lots of birders around lately, many wearing identical emblematic jackets and running. These were birders competing in the 33rd annual World Series of Birding. There were over 60 teams, including one team from England and another from Israel. Why? New Jersey is the perfect host state for a birdwatching competition. Great bird diversity, lots of accessible natural areas, great highway network. Consider that a team of birders can drive from Canadian Zone habitat to Coastal Carolina Zone habitat in less than three hours and never leave New Jersey. Most years the World Series is plotted for Mother’s Day weekend, which sits in the overlap zone between wintering and breeding bird species and catches the peak of spring migration. The May 14 date found most of New Jersey’s wintering birds gone. But the date was blessed by one of the few rainless days we’ve enjoyed in a month and participants were treated to a splendid
migratory fallout. A fallout? An innundation of migrating birds, most notably warblers, tanagers and orioles. Most of these birds are vocalists, touching down with beaks wide open where eager birders in Higbee Beach and Belleplain State Forest grabbed them by the ears. Yes, heard birds count as well as birds identified by sight. In fact most of the really competitive teams get more than half their species by identifying the birds song or call. Starting as it does at midnight, you can
bet that most birds garnered from then till dawn are heard, not seen. Thrushes and cuckoos, in particular are most often tallied by their nocturnal flight calls. It saves birders the trouble of maneuvering through tickinfested woods to find them during the day. There are multiple categories in the event some defined by age, some by geographic scope, some by mode of transportation. The fastest growing component is the youth division sponsored by Zeiss Optics. So listen, dear reader. Spring migration will last until the end of May. Why don’t you and a couple of friends do your own big birding day and see how many bird species you can find in a single day. You are not required to start at midnight and you stop when you get tired (around cocktail time). Stop by Cape May Bird Observatory and pick up a Cape May bird checklist to help you keep score. East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. Your route should include South Cape May and Higbee Beach and maybe Stone Harbor Point, too. Happy birding.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady When my father died, he made my sister and I executors of my step-mother’s estate. That was five years ago. We recently had to put her into a facility because of Alzheimer’s. The problem is on Mother’s Day I strongly felt we should go visit her, an hour drive for me and 20 minutes for my sister. She said she had plans with her family and couldn’t come, leaving me to have to abandon my family and have lunch with someone who won’t remember I was there the next day. This is someone who married my father when my sister and I were adults with families of our own. We don’t know the woman that well, but we are her only family. This isn’t the first time my sister has done this and I don’t think it is fair, do you, Answer Lady? — Put Upon
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Put No, it is not fair, but it is understandable. The two of you look at life differently. She felt her obligation was to be with her family. You felt it was more important to make Sunday a special day for her. Though, of course, she has no recollection of your good deed. Tough one. Listen, The Answer Lady’s advice is to call your sister and invite her to Cape May for a lovely brunch at Fins and a couple rounds of Bloody Marys. Enjoy life while you both can still remember it the next day
Dear Answer Lady Not long ago I spent a weekend in a Cape May hotel. I was waiting for towels for the workout room when another woman came up and also asked for more towels. The young man said they would be ready in a few minutes. The woman snapped at him, speaking in a tone most people would not even use for a stray dog. I turned to her and said, “He said they’d be ready in a few minutes. This isn’t his fault. Maybe you could give him a break.” I had to say something. Where do people get off talking to people in the service industry like that? — Tired of Bullies Dear Tired You get the Answer Lady Medal for Kindness. The bullying of people who cannot fight back is unconscionable. Good for you for educating this woman in civility. Now reward yourself by popping into Patricia Jackson’s Jewelers boutique and treat yourself to a bauble that will remind you that standing up for people who cannot stand up for themselves is a deed worth repeating.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
W
hen a coming of age movie is done poorly, it can be annoying and juvenile — and, worse, disingenuous. When it’s done well, it can be uplifting and convey a shared sense of how we all must have felt at one time during our youth. Take a walk down a nostalgic road named Sing Street. This movie is set in Dublin during the 1980s. It was a time when most youth were leaving for greener pastures in London and beyond (if you can believe it’s even possible to find greener pastures outside of Ireland). Cosmo (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), our teenage hero is stuck not only in the struggling city but in family life rift with dysfunction. His parents argue, his mom in cheating on his dad, his brother is a stoner. And they’re all so brilliant in their roles that you feel sneaky for being able to snoop so long into their messed up life together. This is Walsh’s first movie, but you will feel he’s been at it for a long time! Enter Raphina (Lucy Boynton), an
Sing Sing is pitch perfect attractive teen who captures Cosmo’s attention. She lives at an orphanage directly across the street from a new school to which Cosmo has the unfortunate luck to have been transferred. “All the guys are afraid to talk with her,” someone tells Cosmo. That’s all the dare he needs! Not only does he walk up to her, but he begins making up stuff right on the spot to impress her. Guys, who hasn’t been there before in younger days, eh?
What does he tell her? After he finds out she has aspirations to be a model, he tells her he’s a songwriter and he’s recording a new music video for one of his songs “and she’d be perfect for the part.” She’s interested. The problem: he now has to write his first song. Oh and he also has to get a band together. Oh… right… and they also have to plan a video. That’s all. They just need to make it all up — and quick. The story and music that unfold is simply remarkable. John Carney is the writer/director for this film. It’s not surprising as Carney is the masterful filmmaker behind the movie Once (2007), which won an Oscar for best song, Falling Slowly. Carney has assembled a pitch-perfect cast and team of songwriters to once again capture the hearts of audiences — this time capturing the imagination, dreams and struggles of youth as well. Of the two movies I like this one better. It is one of the most outstanding examples of the genre (the “coming of age” genre, that is) that you will experience this year — perhaps for a number of years.

BUDDHA is a handsome male looking for love. He’s smart, lovable and easy to please. Buddha’s a student in the shelter’s CLASS training program and is a stellar student. So if you are looking for an awesome companion and someone who will love you forever, come meet Buddha at the shelter. He’ll be waiting for you!
ANGEL is a 2 year old tan and white female terrier-lab mix who is a happy and affectionate young girl. She loves to play ball and returns it with a happy grin and a patient “sit” until you throw it again. Angel’s favorite thing is to lean in for petting and sit on your lap. She lived with another dog and loves human companionship. Meet her today!
SAMPSON and DELILAH are five year old beagles who came in together – hopefully their ending will be a “happily ever after” rather than their namesakes! These two mellow dogs walk well on leashes and are content to sniff in the yard and be with each other. Each will claim your lap for petting. Make room in your family and adopt!

NICKEL ‘s nickname at the shelter is “Sour Puss” because he has a constant crabby look on his face, which is quite adorable. Nickel loves other cats and really loves canned wet food. All he needs is a kind, quiet person to help him out and he will be your companion for life. Adopt this all gray cutie pie today!
CHOWDER was found outside a local restaurant. He still gets freaked out when meeting new people. But years of being “shooed” and yelled at makes it a little hard for him to trust. One thing Chowder does love is food, especially canned wet food. Make an offer and just maybe he will be the cat you are looking for!
