Ramblings From The Editor
C
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ape May’s namesake, Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, sailed around our peninsula in 1621 and decided to call this place after himself when he reportedly fell in love with — wait for it — the humidity. Hard to believe on a week like this, right? If you need proof that Cape May has a special kind of magic, my brother, sisterin-law and three nieces are coming to visit today, Thursday, from Scotland, where the temperature is a cool 65 degrees and conditions are a lot less swampy. Hopefully, they’ll be able to channel their inner Cornelius while they’re here. Honestly, they’re just grateful for the sunshine. So, if you see a slightly shorter, slightly thinner, totally bald version of me around town, say hello to my brother Tommy. Speaking of Cape May’s early days, my wife Diane Stopyra wrote a story for another publication this week on Native American artifacts consistently turning up in Cape May, and it got a big reaction online — apparently there are a number of treasure hunters
on this island. According to Sharon Bloom, an estimated 1,500 people comb Sunset Beach looking for Native American artifacts each summer, although that number could easily be higher. A lot of folks don’t advertise their hobby, in an effort to keep the number of hunters down. Among the searchers is Jason Black, former advertising manager at Exit Zero. He commented that it was EZ’s book The Cape, a novel whose protagonist is a white sailor stranded amongst the Lenni Lenape Indians
in the 1600s, which inspired his passion. We know this tribe spent time here — all of their artifacts aside, it’s their lima beangrowing secrets, passed down through the generations, that once earned West Cape May the unofficial title of lima bean capital of the world. So it’s possilbe The Cape is based on true events. The author, a boat builder/ chicken farmer called Charles Whitecar Miskelly, sure had a lot of intimate, inexplicable knowledge about the tribe. My wife’s article touches on the wooden Native American mask on display at Cape May Point State Park. Officials there say it was found locally and likely modeled after a white man and used in protection ceremonies. Wouldn’t it be something if this mask was modeled after the main character in The Cape? Hey, I’m in the storytelling business, and a boy can dream. Other places to learn about our Native American history? The Nature Center of Cape May, which recently erected a display of artifacts found by Richard Cook; Historic Cold Spring Village, which has a display of

Page 14 artifacts in their welcome center; and The Museum of Cape May County, home to over 100 projectile points. Yes, projectile point is a more correct term than arrowhead, since many of these triangular carvings were tied to the top of wooden spears via animal tendon, before the bow and arrow was invented. The Native Americans would set fire to the natural vegetation here, to smoke out deer and other animals. Unfortunately, after European settlement, the Lenni Lenape were coaxed into signing a land transfer agreement they didn’t entirely understand — they didn’t believe people could own land, so they thought they were merely agreeing to share its bounty — and they were forced to leave. We like to think that so many Cool Cape Mayans searching for their artifacts along our shoreline will help keep this story alive for a long while. If you find something you can’t identify, send a picture of it to the Facebook page of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey for a little help. May there be many great finds in your future. Have you had a chance yet to enjoy the splendid new Rotary Park in the heart of downtown Cape May? I mentioned last week that much of the praise should go to

Curtis Bashaw, who was a major cheerleader (his Ice Ball raised around $500,000 for the project) and who provided much design input, too. But I was remiss in failing to mention my old pal, Mayor Ed Mahaney, who used his influence and wiles to obtain grant money for the project. Seriously, good work, Ed. The park is a beauty.
³
Every summer I try and come up with a list of can’t-miss events. Add this — the bicentennial birthday dinners, hosted by the aforementioned Mr Bashaw, at Congress Hall ballroom every Thursday through August 25. Good food, excellent entertainment, classic Americana vibe. $50 for adults, $18.16 for kids. Get there — you’ll thank me.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
would not be vice-anything. For me, as with 100 generations of D’Caturs, the only acceptable goals are General or Private. The notable exception was Great Uncle Bertie D’Catur, who in his profession of Ninja — one of the very few non-Orientals to ever occupy that rank — liked to travel in the guise of a middling-important salesman, with deplorable taste in ties. Once a nominated enemy had met and dismissed him as a buffoon, Bertie would get all Ninja on them, and that was that. That means being totally in charge, brooking no opposition or dissent (as in the late and sometimes lamented Ma D’Catur) or of such low status that no decisions ever had to be made, and no responsibility was ever heaped on one’s head. More than one D’Catur survived a debacle (The Somme, Gallipoli, the fall of Babylon) by, at the vital moment, saying in bewildered tone “Who, me?” and dithering for a few crucial seconds, until an exasperated higher-upper would say “well, there’s no bloody point going NOW, is there!?!” The thought came to mind when we sat
down for our usual Evening Televisual Hour in the Mansion, and had Kitchener, my faithless manservant, instruct Young Albert to turn the device on (for no clear reason, the thought processes of the wretches who devised the Televisual’s controls are closer to that of a Yorkshire Terrier than a human being, and so it falls to Young Albert to turn the machine on and off, which he does with his wet nose) and instead of the taped Star Trek: The Next Generation (a household favorite, the words of every episode being committed to memory: we all think of ourselves as Picard, or
course, except Albert, who considers himself a Klingon warrior at heart, and so there is some jostling and fisticuffs before I prevail and roar: “Make it so!”) we found ourselves watching political chicanery, involving discussion of two mundane white fellas with silver hair and badly pressed shirts who seem to be keen to be vice presidents for that rabid Marmoset and the old lady. That’s a fool’s game: being number two is a sure road to blame, stress and a short walk to the guillotine. If you are ineffective you are derided as weak. If too effective, you are seen as a threat and end up drinking polonium tea or inside the trunk of the car when it ends up in the crusher (wait a minute: that may be the famous docu-drama Goldfinger. No matter: life imitates art). And sooner or later a number two tries to become number one: I have lost count of the number of manservants in the D’Catur household who have tries over the years to usurp yours truly. Suffice of to say they fail, and the roses always come up nicely. Anyway, we soon turned off, as we have no use for excess hot air on a hot summer’s eve.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, all things blue!
ummer is the season of blue. The Cape May sky could inspire Crayola. The ocean shimmers with a hundred blues, including the recent tropical hues, that photographers and painters try to capture. All over town, blue crabs are being steamed and devoured, with fresh blueberries for dessert. Coasties in crisp dress blues hold the door for you at the Wawa. Bluesy music is everywhere — the Grand Hotel had Bourbon, Bacon and Blues, Paul Sottile plays jazz at The Ebbitt Room on Fridays and Saturdays, while at Congress Hall you can relax after a fine dinner at the Blue Pig and listen to music in the Boiler Room or the Brown Room. You wouldn’t know it by spending time in Cape May, but blue is apparently a tough color to create. In 2009, when scientist Mas Subramanian of Oregon State University created the first new blue in 200 years, it was a happy accident. Subramanian’s team was seeking new materials for electronics when they discovered YinMn blue, a durable, vibrant, non-toxic pigment made by heating
black manganese oxide and other chemicals to almost 2000°F. The pigment reflects infrared light, giving scientific backing to the perception that blue is inherently cool. If you’ve got the emotional blues, there’s no better place than Cape May to chase them away. Science has proven that negative ions in the air, like the kind stirred up by moving water, boost your serotonin levels, and therefore your mood. Time at the beach is more effective than any ion machine. Even a few minutes spent near the shoreline can help to cheer you, and if someone could bottle it, the sea air might help patients reduce their dosage of antidepressant medication.
Treat your blues by treating yourself to some Atlantic blue crabs at the Fifth Annual Craft Beer and Crab festival on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate on Saturday, August 6, from 11:00am to 8:00pm. Wash them down with ice-cold craft beers. Listen to live music, shop a farmer’s market and watch the jugglers and acrobats. Call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278 for more information. Proceeds benefit MAC’s educational outreach programs. Take a ride on the Skimmer (609-8843100 or skimmer.com) and learn how to catch your own crabs, then boil them up. In a large pot with a basket, boil water, add salt and seasoning — it’s got to be Old Bay — and submerge the crabs for 10 minutes. Take the basket out, let the crabs cool, remove the lungs and chow down. You can also catch your crabs at the Lobster House Fish Market, or get some crabcakes when you get your blueberries at the West Cape May Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays through August 30, from 3 to 7:30 at the Backyard Park behind the Municipal Complex.
Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero
After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.
A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.
The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.
This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.
Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.
Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady We were out to dinner last weekend at a popular restaurant and I was aghast at the behavior of some of the children who were there with parents and grandparents. They were allowed to run around the table, spill their food and scream at the top of their lungs. Alas, their behavior fell on deaf ears to those in their charge. I do not need to spend good money on a meal I cannot enjoy because others have no consideration for their fellow diners. What make matters worse is that the room was a virtual echo chamber for noise, so it also prevented me from having any conversation with my date. — Irritable in Cape May Dear Irritable The answer is simple; choose restaurants that restrict the kiddies. George’s Place, for
Wise answers to perplexing questions
example, has a “No kids under six, after six” policy as do several other restaurants — The Ebbitt Room and That’s Amore are two others. Another option is to ask to be seated in another part of the restaurant that might be quieter. Sometimes restaurants reserve certain areas for family dining. Bon Appétit! Dear Answer Lady Every week in the summer I take one whole day to spend with my granddaughter. Sometimes we go to the beach then grab a hot dog at Hotdog Tommy’s. Other times we
go to the pool and stop at Zoe’s for lunch and ice cream. My problem is that my sister often imposes her grandchildren on the adventure without asking me if it’s okay — and never gives the kids any money. This has happened three times this summer already. I am not rich and it restricts what we can do. I don’t want to punish the kids and my sister is oblivious to any hints. She makes sure she does this while the kids are in the room, making me look like the ogre. What do I do? — Generous to a Fault Dear Generous Looks like your sister is a real operator. The Answer Lady trusts that talking to your sister would be useless, so passive-aggressive action is the order of the day. You could sneak out without her knowing. You simply tell your sister in front of the kids that you would be happy to take them along, but you are short on cash and cannot afford to pay for all the kids. So, “Where’s the money, honey?” forcing her to look like the bad guy. The third is to do things which require no money. Perhaps a combination of all three will at least get you through the summer.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ttention Pokemon Go addicts. Now that your smartphone isn’t in your face, as evidenced by your reading this line, allow me to me to explain the sound you are hearing... it is the conjoined laughter of 47 million American bird watchers, who have been playing a reallife, real-time version of your new diversion for more than 100 years. Called birding, it compels gamers to travel to great natural areas in the quest not for electronic phantoms but real, habitat-calibrated bird species that then must be correctly identified in order to be counted. There are about 10,000 bird species on the planet. See or hear all of them and you win a lifetime of travel. Or you can temper your geographic scope and limit your search to North America, which hosts 800 species that, like Pokemon phantoms, come in an array of colors and degrees of desirability. Birding version 1.0 is highly addictive. Players ultimately come to plot their lives around great natural spectacles and seasonal movements of birds. Locations you are
certain to visit in your bird quest include the Everglades, where you may be lucky enough to tally the rare Everglades kite. Also frequently visited is Cave Creek Canyon, near Portal Arizona, where such regional specialties as elegant trogon and magnificent hummingbird might be found. For grassland bird species, most gamers travel to the Pawnee Grasslands of Colorado or the prairies around Minot, North Dakota. Arctic birds? Churchill, Manitoba is a favorite destination, as is Barrow, Alaska.
Getting started in Birding version 1.0 is less expensive than the cost of a smartphone. Binoculars and a field guide to North American birds cost less than $150. But since you already have the phone, you’ll be pleased to know that bird identification guides are also available as apps. So there you have it. Real birds in real life in real time vs hasing electronic phantoms superimposed over real settings. If you like Pokemon, you are going to love birding. This writer conducts a Monday morning field trip at the Nature Conservancy preserve on Sunset Boulevard. Cost is $10 each; children free. Meeting time 7:15. Walks start at 7:30am. I also conduct a two hour Break into Birding class at the Cape May Bird Observatory Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. Wednesday classes are small and registration limited. Meet at 2:00pm. You are advised to call to reserve your space 609-884-2736. Go on line to learn about these and other CMBO nature viewing opportunities www.birdcapemay.org.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

our new films are available at www. capemayfilm.org from the Cape May Film Camp. The camp has been hosted for several years allowing kids to write, direct, edit, and act in their very own short film. Over the years, these films have been thought-provoking, funny, innovative, and silly — sometimes all at once. This year, the films created were among some of the finest produced throughout the years. In Love Hurts, we get schooled in just how badly romance can mess you up. It was love at first sight for one kid on the beach, but a wave knocks him down. Bad luck stops him at every turn when trying to talk to the girl of his dreams. And by “bad luck” I really mean his clumsy fool of a friend. Keyholes is a dark thriller that starts with a fatal accident. Our main character needs to sort through what she’s done so she packs up to run away. Once confronted, will she do the right thing or continue down the wrong road. The Other Notebook finds our main char-
Highlights from Cape May Film Camp acter wanting the attention of a boy from class. When she sees him with another girl, she devises a way to win him over. Unfortunately, it’s not an honorable plan, but rather one built on deceit. Could it possibly work? Cotton Mind is a stylish, suspenseful film that keeps you guessing throughout. Rose is a girl in trouble. Bri is her friend who helps her through the difficult times. The only trouble is that Bri is elusive, always one step beyond Rose — and she is someone her
friends have never seen. The music creates a soulful mood, and the action is thoughtful. In the end, this is a beautifully filmed short. There is also a film completed by the class for grown-ups a few weeks earlier called Fish Wish. It’s a typical morning at the church, and the organist has arrived to practice songs for the two weddings that will take place the next day. Or will they? The first couple has called off their wedding because of they had an argument at IKEA. The second couple are at risk as well. That’s the drama we see unfolding inside the church as the organist starts to practice. And what drama there is! These films are always so entertaining, and they’re all as locally made as the tomatoes and blueberries you can buy at the side of the road. So join us at the Cape May Film Festival this November to enjoy these locally grown productions on the big screen. You’ll be surprised just how talented your neighbors (and their children) can be! Visit www.capemayfilm.org to see the films online.
