Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
will hold off on commenting on the ridiculously petty witch hunt that’s still going after Cape May Police Department’s demoted chief, Rob Sheehan, until after the hearing that is supposed to conclude this Friday (tomorrow). But suffice to say that every time I think about this sordid affair, I feel my blood pressure rising. People talk about heading north and leaving for Canada if Donald Trump is elected president of the country. Well, I feel the same way about Ed Mahaney being reelected as mayor of Cape May. I’ll hitch up the wagon and head north to Stone Harbor. No, wait, I’m exaggerating, of course. It’s silly to compare those two. I’m waaaay more concerned about Mahaney being re-elected mayor. (Insert winking emoji here.) Until then, I’m going to discuss altogether more wholesome and positive matters... When it comes to her jogging routes, my wife is a creature of habit. She’s been running the same trails in the Cape May County Park and Zoo since 1999. When I question
the efficiency of driving a 24-mile round trip to Exit 11 on the Parkway only to run three (carbon footimprint alert!), she points to the cool factor of jogging to the sound of a roaring lion, or to the sight of a peacock with its feathers spread. I get it — our little zoo has been named the third best in the nation by TripAdvisor, after all. So I was surprised when Diane came home last week and announced she’d cheated on those running paths with some
new ones — at Cape May Point State Park. To be honest, I haven’t walked these trails in years, and I’m not entirely sure why that is. I remember the wild beauty of them very well. Diane says she got within five feet of a bald eagle last week, and ran under six swans as they took off honking over the marshlands. It’s a fine balance — serene and peaceful, but buzzing with all sorts of life. There are the swimming ducks with their little butts in the air, frantic muskrats zipping by, pinky-finger sized turtles crossing through meadow grasses. The other morning, my sister-inlaw drove way from Egg Harbor to join Diane on a jog through these paths, and from the sounds of it, the Cape May Point State Park has claimed another convert. Some places are worth a trek — we’re lucky to have so many of them in our own backyard. Speaking of running… for those of you who enjoy pounding the Cape’s pavement, don’t forget that registration is now open for Wildwood’s Wild Half marathon, happening March 15. At wildhalf.com, you can sign up to compete with Team Foster, a nonprofit

Chelsea Koglmeier at the launch of her new Bikes ORO operation on Monday of this week sponsored by Exit Zero that pairs service dogs with wounded veterans. Puppies, athletics, and free beer and boardwalk rides at the finish line. Not a bad way to kick off the summer season… But for those of you who prefer biking, here’s a cool bit of news: crowdfunding for Bikes ORO has officially launched. For every custom-made, belt-driven bike this locally based, socially conscious company sells, it supports the donation of a set of wheels to someone in a developing country who needs them to get to school, or to sell goods at market. Bikes ORO, meaning Bikes Of Reckless Optimism, was founded by Duke graduate Chelsea Koglmeier, who came up with the idea while working for a microfinance company in a Ugandan refugee community eight years ago. Now, the Cincinnati native says there might be a Cape May storefront in the works, coming soon. Keep tabs on this very cool (and very Cool Cape May) startup at bikesoro. com. Until next time, get outside — walking, running, biking, or just staring off over the ocean. Spring is coming.

F
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week let’s go sketching!
rom the time you first picked up a crayon, you’ve probably wanted to draw a recognizable bird. Think back to your elementary school days, when the teacher gave you that blank sheet of paper and told you to draw the beach. You took out your box of eight crayons, tucked a smiling sun in the corner, colored the bottom of the sheet brown — very lightly, with your crayon sideways — and debated where the sea (blue and green) ended and the sky (just blue) began. Maybe you added a red crab or a bucket to the sand, and a purple jellyfish or octopus to the sea. As a final touch, you used black to draw a few lower-case Ms in the sky to represent the seagulls. It’s time to do better than that. In the 19th century, drawing was one of those skills that educated people were expected to possess. In Pride and Prejudice, Miss Bingley’s list of qualities an accomplished woman must have included “a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages.” Gentlemen, too, were expected to have some
ability to draw plants and wildlife, along with buildings, bridges and boats. Drawing remained a useful teaching tool across the curriculum throughout the 20th century, as biology students drew and labeled organs, or history students drew maps. Talent was less important than focus. Your map of the colonies might have a saggy New Jersey, but you’d remember that it is between New York and Delaware, and you’d understand why it was important to General Washington. Today, when students label computer-generated pictures, it seems most of the drawing
is secluded in a weekly art class. Birdwatchers know the value of drawing the birds they encounter. Not only does it help them to record the birds they’ve seen, but it forces the watcher to focus on small details. That’s why Cape May Bird Observatory has scheduled a workshop on Field Sketching for Beginners. On Saturday, March 26, Michael O’Brien will offer tips and tricks for quickly sketching birds in the field. Most important for me — no artistic talent or training is needed. Register early — visit the Cape May Bird Observatory section of njaudubon.org, or call (609) 861-0700. The fee is $85 members and $125 for nonmembers. Here’s a money-saving tip — if you spend a fair amount of time in Cape May, consider joining New Jersey Audubon, which works to preserve wildlife habitats in the Garden State. A family membership is $40, and members get a discount on registration fees for many activities, including gardening workshops and summer camp programs at the Nature Center.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
had an electric car, once: it was a marvel of sleek engineering, a joy to behold and with an extra-long extension cord I could motor anywhere I wanted within one-and-a-half blocks of home. Also, all the lights in the Mansion would dim and go out if one depressed the accelerator pedal for more than a second. After that, we tried a motor vehicle powered by a single giant flywheel that would be spun up overnight in the garage, then let loose by a simple switch. On the plus side, it would go from zero to 60mph in one half of a second. On the minus side there was no alternative to going from zero to 60mph in one half of a second, and of passing 100mph a moment later, and staying at that speed for 15 minutes until the wheel wound down. More than once I had planned only to have a brief lunch at Gecko’s but found myself in Atlantic City. Of course, there is the Model T, the first one ever made, apparently: I won it from that buffoon Henry Ford in a game of Twister at the Brown Room one night. I would have lost
since Ford, possessing no actual backbone, was in fact remarkably flexible, if not for the fact that I was wearing a kilt that night in honor of my ancestor, The McD’Catur, who rose in revolt against the English oppressors but forgot to tell anyone and so marched on London alone, in his jammies. Well, when I was forced to bend over at an angle approaching 300 degrees, my kilt fell upside down over my head, presenting Ford with a close-up view of D’Catur Minor. He shrieked and withdrew at speed — by that I mean ran away — it was not THAT kind of game of Twister, so please, get a hold of yourself
(THOSE games are held at a famed local bar on the first Friday night of the month... by invite only) which still runs, but is by law required to proceed no faster than 5mph and to have my faithful manservant, Kitchener, walk ahead at all times waving a red flag so as to avoid passersby falling in fright under the wheels. In fairness, that does still tend to happen in Ocean City. But really, we need something to suit the age we live in. I was hearing that those geniuses at Goggle are close to perfecting their robot-driven car, but you know my thoughts on intelligent machines: they are only a little less sinister than clowns, and somewhat more dangerous than chimpanzees. I accept that the Robot Revolution will come one day, and have no intention of meeting it shrieking and urinating in the back of a tiny smart car as it drives me into the ocean. So, people power it is. I am looking for a dozen muscular, oiled young men and women bearing me aloft in a palanquin. Broad shoulders and minds required.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hese are desperate times in the old birding racket. Winter’s wonders have lost their luster. Local and visiting birders are driven to search for seasonal bread crumbs tossed our way by Ma Nature. They are there to find if you listen and look, sure signs that spring is coming and with it a whole new season’s worth of natural encounters. For example: A colleague just poked her nose in my door to announce that the cardinals are singing up a storm in her neighborhood. Cardinals sing to define their breeding territory and to attract a mate. Morning temperatures may hark to winter, but a strong spring sun makes cardinal hearts blaze with ardor and fills their beaks with song. And cardinals are not the only birds ushering in spring with song. Red-winged blackbirds have been coaxing the season along since January. Perhaps you’ve noted an increase in American robins on your lawn. These sturdy thrushes have been here all winter but until your lawn thawed enough to support earth-
worms who are themselves in a frisky, procreative mood, robins fed mainly on berries. If you go to any woodland around sunset you will hear great horned owls dueting. The higher-pitched vocalist is the female who is already incubating eggs, as are bald eagles, whose population recovery is one of the greatest environmental stories of our time. There are over a dozen nests in Cape May and Cumberland counties, with more prospecting birds vying for nest sites every year. Now the big question: What is Cape
May’s spring herald? For two decades, Cape May’s official herald of spring has been the laughing gull. Wintering south of our region, the “Summer Gull” traditionally arrives some time in late February or early March. They reach Cape May with their mouths open and great honor is granted to the birder who records the first LAGU of the season. Then there are early-arriving species like piping plovers, tree swallows and long-tailed ducks, whose yodeled love song can be heard in coastal waters from here to the Arctic. The call is phonetically rendered “South southerly” by local gunners who also know the duck by this name. In the Arctic, Inuit hunters hear “Ah-guy-a-chuk” and identify the bird accordingly. But by the time native people on Baffin Island are hearing long-tailed ducks, spring will have morphed into summer in Cape May and there will be a whole new host of seasonal milestones to mark the season and fill this column. Good luck with this year’s LAGU challenge. May the best birder win.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am getting married in September. My parents are paying for everything, but we cannot agree on the entertainment. My parents want us to hire a band. The band happens to be five of their friends — you know, old people. We want a DJ. They also want their godson to be the wedding photographer. Are you kidding me? He’s 16. I don’t want an argument so what should I do Answer Lady? – Dancing Freakout Dear Dancing Don’t freak out, except on the dance floor. This is an easy fix. You simply say, “Mom, dad, we thank you for everything and to show you our appreciation, future hubby and I have decided to pay for the entertainment and the photography.” Then pick up the phone and call DJ Ed McDonough. He’ll make sure everyone
Wise answers to perplexing questions
has a good time. As to a wedding photographer — Exit Zero’s Aleksey Moryakov or MP Myers are both fine choices and will give you the luxury of saying, “No, we don’t like that, but we do like this.” Not really possible for a favorite godson. It is your wedding, and the stress of it will be bad enough so, any way in which you can take some it away should be embraced Dear Answer Lady My mother is driving me crazy. She is a 60ish, stylish woman who is petite and has always worn stilettos to lengthen her look,
BUT she has recently developed a hip problem and will probably need a new one. Still, she insists on wearing those heels. Twice she has caught a heel in the grated doormat of a public building and needed some nice man to come and extract her. In each case, she was very lucky she didn’t fall and break her hip. When I challenge her on this, she waves her hand at me and says, “Better to go down in style than to shuffle off into the land of dowdy and frumpy.” — Stylin’into Disability? Dear Stylin’ The Answer Lady must confess a certain admiration for your mother, but is sympathetic to your concern. A compromise is in order in the form of a shopping spree to Casale’s Shoes. They have a fabulous array of sturdy European styles which will give mom a Bohemian chic until she recovers her strut. Once she is on the mend, she should be encouraged to resume her stylish ways although you might consider introducing her to a fashionista shoe that is a tad more grounded. It also sounds like Mom needs a good cocktail. After the shoe spree, taken her to Fins for a ginormous margarita.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
T
hanks to everyone who joined us last Sunday for the Cape May Film Society’s annual Oscar party. Special thanks to Pam and Mark of Mad Batter who put out one delicious spread. Thank you to Will for his outstanding hosting and trivia challenges! And those baskets were beautiful, everybody wanted to win one! But just like Oscar, there is only one winner (thankfully there are many categories!). One film I predicted to win a sweep was The Revenant (see column last week for a review), and it came close to sweeping of all the major categories. Leonardo DiCaprio won for best actor, his first Oscar. Alejandro González Iñárritu won for best director, his second such award in two years (last year, he one for Birdman). The Revenant also won for best cinematography, not surprising as it was beautifully shot. Of its 12 nominations, this film won three biggies — but not a clean sweep. Best picture award went to Spotlight, which seems have surprised Hollywood. But that win was predicted by a certain Oscar
Leo accepts his first Oscar party attendee, Corbin C. He pulled me aside within the first few minutes of my arriving at the party to reveal his forecast. He said the film’s creative approach to telling a complicated and scandalous story was worthy of the award, and apparently the Academy agreed. One film that took home a bunch of gold was Mad Max: Fury Road. As you know from this column, this film was one of my favorites. All of the awards this spectacular allegory of a movie won were not surprising
at all — editing, costumes, make up, production design, sound. In other wins, my favorite, Inside Out, won for best animated film. This was my pick for best film in all of 2015, not just animated. My favorite animated and live shorts, which we hope to bring to the Cape May Film Festival this November, won as well. Bear Story is a remarkable animated short with accomplishments in feeling as much as artistry. Stutterer is an endearing film with remarkable storytelling and direction. It seems that most major nominees were presented with some award, with the possible exception of the movie Brooklyn which went home empty-handed. This was a beautiful film, and deserved something, but as well all know Oscar can disappoint. What never disappoints is the great crowd that joins us for this happening party — and for our award-winning programming all year long. Please make plans to join us for one of our many presentations this upcoming year and for next year’s Oscar party! Find out more at www.capemayfilm.org.

BLUEBERRY is a blue pitt mix that recently found a new home! Yep, this cutie pie is off the market. Unfortunately many of Blueberry’s friends haven’t been quite as fortunate to find a new home. However, you can change that today by stopping by the shleter and picking out your new furry friend.
«
MAGGIE is a very shy girl at first, but doesn’t take long for her to warm up to you. She loves children and other dogs but a quiet home would be much more relaxing for her. Maggie is a very petite, 2 year old female and a wonderful companion. She deserves a person with an exceptional heart to care for her. Be that person today and adopt!
«
ZOLA is a five year old boxer/pitbull terrier mix. She has had one tough life. Zola was hit by a car about one year ago and was in critical condition which left her with a slight head tilt. She is a good dog, she just has bad luck. She loves to play ball in the yard and enjoys long leaisurely walks. Come in and turn Zola’s luck around!
