Ramblings From The Editor
V
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ery much enjoyed the keynote speech delivered by Curtis Bashaw at a monthly Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May meeting on Tuesday at the Grand Hotel (such beautiful panoramic views!). Curtis inspired the room with his vision for Cape May, one to which I have long subscribed. In short, he talked about the importance of managing our brand, of never being complacent, being restless in our quest for improving the town and its public spaces... and of being civil to, and respectful of, each other. I get all that and agree with all of it. The Cape May brand and the future of this city has always been the most important part of what we do at Exit Zero. It’s why we exist — to wave the flag for America’s Original Seaside Resort and to contribute our own energy and creativity to the city. But... when I look across the room and see Mayor Ed Mahaney at one end and the city’s police captain (formerly chief) Rob Sheehan, it’s hard to feel civility. Instead, it’s so much easier to feel frus-
tration and anger. The mayor got up and made a fine speech about all the great things that are happening in Cape May, with the implication it was his clear-headed leadership that was behind all of this. There were the millions of dollars worth of grants, for instance, getting an early start on the 10-year Master Plan, and trying to find a way to attract young people to town in order to arrest the population decline of Cape May — an issue that the mayor bor-
rowed from Curtis, and others, who have been banging this drum for years. Although evidence has shown that he may just have the untidiest desk and office in the universe, there’s no doubt Mahaney comes across as a focused, organized man. And yet, this is the same guy who has wasted several hundred thousand dollars of YOUR money on a witch-hunt of Rob Sheehan. A witch-hunt that began a year ago when Sheehan was demoted from his job after events that were pretty much farcical in their nature. Since then, the reputation of Cape May Police Department has been dragged through the mud, the city has looked pretty stupid, and the only people who have benefited have been lawyers. Particularly Tony Monzo, the city solicitor, and, most recently, Todd Gelfand, who the city hired for their latest Sheehan takedown attempt. Having, one year ago, utterly baffled the population of Cape May by suggesting that Sheehan had done something wrong and yet providing not proof at all, the city turned to a

matter that I can only call trivial. On the city’s behalf, Todd Gelfand has been trying to argue that Sheehan failed to meet the Attorney General Guidelines for firearms qualification in 2009. Apparently, Sheehan, along with former police chief Diane Sorantino and former lieutenant Chuck Lear, met the requirement that they qualify with the weapons twice in 2009 — but they did not get their permits at least three months apart. If this seems bizarrely mundane to you, especially since it was seven years ago, you are not alone. The city ratted on Sheehan, not for the first time, to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. They ruled that it was not a criminal issue, but an admin matter. And yet, still the city proceeds, paying large sums of money to lawyers who are trying to yet again drag a good man’s reputation through the mud. Sorry, Curtis and everyone
else who lives strictly by the code of civility... although Mayor Mahaney has accomplished good things during his tenure, I maintain that the man is a poison at the heart of our beautiful city. Yes, uncivil of me, I know.
And that surely overrules all the good that he does. He can’t help himself — he’s had eight years to try, and he’s still the same Machiavellian, controlling, divisive character. There will be an election to
pick a new mayor in November. It’s crucial, really crucial, that this community finds one person who will stand and defeat Mahaney. Are you out there? Until next week...

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... wrap up the winter roller skating season at Convention Hall
pring is on the way, and soon you’ll be exercising outside, enjoying fresh air and sunshine. Before you say goodbye to winter, try roller skating at Convention Hall. Roller skating is great exercise, allowing you to burn at least 350 calories per hour — more if you’re faster — without putting stress on your joints. Your legs get a good workout, and your core and arms work to keep you balanced. And, because it’s fun, you won’t find yourself counting the minutes, or the laps, until it is over. (I can’t be the only one who covers the readout on the treadmill.) For kids, roller skating is even more beneficial. It’s a social activity. Going around in circles gives them a chance to make friends and see them again and again. Phones are stowed away, so you have real conversations. Without earbuds, everyone is listening to the same music, singing along, and sometimes taking part in group dances. Mastering the skills necessary to roller skate gives kids confidence and helps them to associate exercise with fun. Teach your kids
to skate while they — and you — are young, if possible. It’s quite a shoulder workout for parental arms. Kindergarteners may be a little uncoordinated, but they are also pretty light, which is important, because they are likely to pull a few friends down with them when they fall. Kindergarteners are also accustomed to falling and quick to forget any tears. Older kids are more coordinated, but they are also more likely to get embarrassed and less likely to want you near them, so they are exponentially harder to teach. Teenagers, busy pretending they don’t know you,
can figure it out on their own. This weekend is a great time to introduce your kids to skating. Adults will want to go out and hear the music Cape May Singer Songwriter brings to town, so wearing the kids out with family fun will leave them well-behaved for the babysitter. Just make sure they don’t wear you out instead. The City of Cape May’s Recreation Department offers roller skating at Convention Hall through March 26. Bring your own standard or in-line skates, or rent them — $2 for traditional skates and $4 for in-line skates. Admission is $5 per skater, $2 per non-skater. Skate Fridays from 4 to 6 and 6:30 to 8:30, and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3 and 4 to 6. In addition, there is a Toddler Skate on Friday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30. The schedule is subject to change, so check the website (capemay.com) to confirm before you tell the kids where you’re going. Drinks and snacks are available. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Next Week: Springtime Spookiness

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
do not trust people with bare hands (as opposed to bear hands: do you remember Billy “Bear hands” Baird? He worked summers at the Admiral Hotel. Lovely fellow, wouldn’t hurt a fly, but had the most extraordinary hands I’ve ever seen: from the wrist down they were bear paws. For the longest time I assumed he was wearing luxurious mittens, but then one night I saw him trying to snap his fingers to get a barman’s attention, and realized he had no opposable thumbs. He did not have bear arms, though I did support his right to them. Hmm... my faithful manservant Kitchener did warn me that particular joke would be wasted on you). In My Day, a gentleman would only let a lady see his hands once they were married, and even then sometimes not. I wear gloves at all times, even when bathing, a habit I picked up from the late and occasionally lamented Ma D’Catur, who I assumed from my earliest memories had leather hands with buttons up the back. So you can imagine my horror when I turned on the Televisual Device and saw that
peculiar orange chap with the saltwater taffy hair trying to convince us, during a presidential debate, that he had genitals of regular proportions. His tiny cats-paw hands were waving in manic fashion, and I recall fighting not to be physically ill. I am not sure who he was, but assume he is one of those circus people who used to roll into Cape May annually with cages containing dancing bears (that, sadly, was the fate of “Bear Hands” Baird), pacing lions and Wildwooders. Ma had gloves for every occasion: white cotton ones for running along the base boards to show the maids what they had missed,
black leather ones for social occasions/Hell’s Angels conventions, ocelot fur mittens for tickling Father (at least I assume that was what was going on: I never did peek under the bedroom door, unlike my sister, Dotty, who from that day on never spoke a word out loud, or blinked, or indeed fed herself without assistance) and spiked chainmail gauntlets for disciplining the children/staff/Shoebies. Ma also had a pair of what she called “making things happen in this town” gloves that contained various concealed accessories: the left forefinger fired a small caliber bullet, the right would dispense arsenic capsules, the left pinkie had a razorblade for “marking up” people who crossed her, and least one other carried an electrical charge capable of immobilizing a charging clown (Ma disliked them almost as much as I). The thumb of the right was a Zippo lighter, whose flame could do anything from ingiting a suitor’s cigar to setting his beard ablaze should he overstep the mark (“the mark” was a movable thing for Ma, and many’s a man was last heard running off shrieking into the night.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
was driving up Route 47 during one of its rare untrafficed periods. The moribund mass of feathers mantling the center line commanded instant attention. Most times I merely slow my car to identify the victim. This time, seeing red, I stopped. Blood? No, tail feathers. Sadly red-tailed hawks are frequent road kill victims. As perch-hunting raptors, these burley buteos find roadsides flanked by trees ideal hunting places — except for the risk imposed by automobiles. Most victims are inexperienced juveniles. Adults, identified by their red tails, are usually savvy enough to avoid oncoming traffic. Not this time. Why did I stop? First to see whether the bird was dead. Second to see if it was banded. Not a few local raptors have acquired a Fish and Wildlife Service bracelet, a momento harking back to a brief incarceration in a hawk-banding station in Cape May Point. Band returns provides important information relating to geographic distribution, age — and mortality. Third, if dead, I wanted to determine
whether the bird was in good enough physical condition to be turned over to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia to be rendered into a study skin. A quick study showed the bird to be quite dead, quite schmucked, and unbanded. I moved it to the side of the road so some foraging vulture wouldn’t suffer a similar fate, noting as I did that the bird’s talons were empty and that, aside from being dead, it seemed to be in good health with fat reserves. A starving bird might have been incau-
tious. Why this healthy bird was killed remains a mystery, but accidents happen. The empty talons and shattered wing suggest the hawk flew into the path of the car as it was attempting to secure prey on the far side of the road. Drivers can avoid such unpleasant surprises by looking way down the roadway and being attentive for perched birds of prey. One thing you should absolutely not do is collect bird remains. It is illegal to have even wild bird feathers in your posession unless you have both state and federal salvage permits. You should also know that birds are often infested with lice and deer ticks. While I have examined scores of roadkilled raptors, I have happened upon few adults. Free-floating adults are quickly recruited by widowed birds so that the important task of getting off another year’s crop of young goes on. Since we are already in the breeding season for red-tailed hawks I don’t expect the bird’s widowed mate to go through a protracted period of mourning. I only hope she or he stays off the road. Drive gently.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I work in an office with a small staff. In order to get anything accomplished we need to work harmoniously, which we have for four years. But lately, one of my co-workers has started making racist and sexist remarks which are becoming harder to ignore. I spoke to my employer, but he refuses to deal with it, fearing, I suspect, that he will quit. Meanwhile, I’m the one thinking about quitting, which would kill me. I love my job. What should I do? – Cornered Dear Cornered If you are thinking about quitting anyway, you might remind your boss that such inflammatory rhetoric is frowned upon by the Department of Labor. And back your threat up with documentation. Make sure your new job,
Wise answers to perplexing questions
however, is secured before you make a move like that. Or, if you can pull it off, start channeling Donald Trump and give it right back at him. Generally, bullies dish it out a lot better than they can take it. If, however, scorched earth is not your style, invite your racist work colleague to drinks at Hemingway’s and, with all the sincerity you can muster, ask him what the heck is wrong with him and then ask him to knock it off, expressing concern of course, for his new-found anger. When that doesn’t work, you might want to put your faith in karma.
Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend invited me to dinner with his parents and I am humiliated that the dress I wanted to wear is too tight. I mean like button-popping tight. The dinner is one week away. Do you have a crash diet you can recommend? I must lose 10 pounds in seven days. That’s doable, don’t you think? – Too Tight Dear Tight The Answer Lady thinks that if you were in front of her, she would splash cold water on you so you could start thinking like a normal person. The Answer Lady does not believe in crash diets. She does believe in Spanx. For Pete’s sake go out and buy a new dress and some Spanx. Cotton Company will hook you right up in the dress department and their sister store Lace Silhouettes will take care of the Spanx. The staff will show you the best way to put the things on — which the Answer Lady had trouble figuring out. Once your big dinner is over, resolve to change your habits, so the pounds come off naturally. Pop over to North Beach Gym and sign up for a membership.

ight moments in a film do not necessarily make it a comedy. Keep this in mind, especially you Maggie Smith fans, as you go to The Lady in the Van. On the surface, this is the story of a homeless woman Miss Shepard (played by Smith) who lives in a van she parks on an up-and-coming street in London. She is befriended by a playwright (played by Alan Bennett), and while their arrangement was to be temporary it lasts for 15 years. Under the surface, this plot has many layers, as do the main characters. For example, Bennett appears as two separate characters: the writer who lives the life (that’s written about) and the writer who actually does the writing. The two Bennetts talk to each other, which well serves the purpose of revealing the inner most thoughts and feelings of the character. Well done. Miss Shephard originally strikes us a cantankerous old homeless lady who isn’t quite “normal.” But there are special char-
Maggie Smith in The Lady in the Van acteristics and quirks about her that make the viewer want to find out more. We know that all isn’t all as it appears for these two. Also our main characters have secrets. And during the course of the film, all these secrets are revealed. The history of each secret is slowly peeled back and we see how they came to be who and what they are. The peripheral characters, mostly neighbors, are caricatures of people we see in our everyday lives: the upwardly mobile
couple that live across the street, the aristocratic woman who does her duty by the homeless, the couple who expect everyone to think their children are as brilliant and talented as they think they are, and so on down the street. The characters here are developed just to the right degree: we know enough and are not left yearning to know more. Among the subplots of this tale are religion, homosexuality, family obligations, mistakes, and plenty of could-a, should-a, and would-as. The film is not suitable for younger audiences: not because there is any nudity (none), profanity (very little) or violence (none), but rather because this is a complex story that looks back to the past and lives in the present. A creative ending gives the viewer hope for the future and contains some of the most amusing scenes of the film. This is a thoughtful and complex film. That being said: it is never a chore to watch Smith especially in this role and Jennings brings us a character worth getting to know.
