Ramblings From The Editor
S
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
o it’s the middle of March, it’s still a bit cold and damp (apart from that brief, beautiful spell last week) and there is absolutely nothing to do in America’s Original Seaside Resort apart from, you know, a little bit of eating and drinking. Right? Yeah, right. This weekend is one of my favorites of the year. It’s when talented musicians converge upon us from all over the country for Singer Songwriter Cape May. This weekend marks the ninth annual event. I’m not going to say — Gee, I remember the first one. Was that really eight years ago? Time flies etc... But, gee... Anyway, 14 venues on the island will host musicians from places like Brooklyn, Boston and Baltimore, Atlantla, Cleveland and Kansas City. And a Canadian, too! Bless him. Actually, two Canadians, but we don’t really count J. M. Kearns because he will be traveling to his gig from his home on Stimpson Lane (he’s a neighbor).
The two keynote performers this year are Ben Arnold and Jill Sobule. Long before Katie Perry, Jill Sobule wrote a catchy song called “I Kissed A Girl,” which I remember from the time (it was 1995). She also wrote a song called “Supermodel” from the movie Clueless. Sobule will be playing Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom on Friday night, starting at 5:15pm. Arnold is a soulful Philadelphia-based musician who has drawn comparisons to
Tom Waits and Randy Newman — two very different musicians for sure, but you can hear it in Arnold’s voice. He will be playing Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom on Saturday at 5:15pm. Those two keynote performances are $10. Those, along with a concert by my favorites, The Bastard Sons of Captain Mey, at Congress Hall on Sunday night, are the only gigs that you have to pay for. Everything else you can enjoy free of charge, while gliding through this beautiful old town, having a snack here, a drink there. It’s a wonderful thing to happen to Cape May’s bar and restaurant owners in the middle of March. And it’s a wonderful thing to happen to Cape May locals (and visitors) who get to enjoy the rush of energy that comes from these musicians hitting town. It really is palpable. For an extra-special treat, I will again be hosting an after-party for the musicians. That will be happening at the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse on Saturday night, starting at midnight. I know, it’s pretty late for me,

too, but it’s worth it. You’re welcome to come if you want to hear some of the musicians jam along together by candlelight — it’s one of my favorite events of the year. But be a nice guest and bring along a bottle of something to drink, if you’re in the mood. We will be offering some naan bread pizza from the Cookhouse menu, along with treats from Seaside Cheese. In the past, some good neighbors have brought along their own dishes, like chili and gumbo. If you want to do that, go right ahead. But it’s not necessary. And if you think you have a good voice and want to mix it up with the musicians, that is absolutely NOT encouraged. Leave it to the folks who are playing at the event. This ain’t karaoke night. The party at Exit Zero will last from midnight till 3:30am, when I’m so ready to kick everyone out and get in my PJs.
And after that it’s only a few weeks before the spring edition of the Exit Zero Jazz Festival hits town, on April 22-24. Ever feel like you’re being spoiled these days? I don’t know who said that Cape May’s season is getting
shorter, but they’re not on the same planet as I’m occupying right now. Tickets are available right now for the jazz festival. We have a nifty little ticket printer at the EZ World HQ at 109 Sunset Boulevard. And we also produced
some snazzy new merchandise for the festival (it has a very cool new logo), which benefits from the proceeds of the sales. So come check it out. Let’s enjoy some culture and some fun, Cape Mayniacs. See you around town.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, things are getting a little spooky
t. Patrick’s Day is a good time to remember that Halloween isn’t the only spooky time of the year. While modern mystics tend to focus on fall to commune with the other world, our ancestors found springtime to be full of chances to get together with ghosts, fairies and other legendary beings. Although spring festivals tended to be a little more optimistic than their autumn counterparts, things can get dicey whenever spirits and humans mingle. And, in the season from the spring equinox until Beltane (May 1), when the veil between our world and the spirit world is thin, even a skeptic can get a little nervous. The Irish stereotype holds that we love our spirits — beer and whisky — but we also love our spirits — ghouls and monsters of all kinds. You haven’t heard a ghost story until you’ve heard it told in a brogue, by someone with a gift for blarney developed in the mists of the Emerald Isle. Told in the dark of October, such tales can scare you to bits. With a little more daylight, stories of the kelpie and the sluagh, the banshee and Dearg Due are
not quite so terrifying, and therefore are a lot more fun. Elaine’s Dinner Theater is making the most of this spooky time of year, with Ghost Hunter Weekends on April 1, April 15 and May 20. Elaine’s is an historic inn built in the 1880s. It’s also, according to the experts, an actual haunted house, with papers and everything. Ghost Hunter Weekends start with a welcome reception on Friday night, with champagne and dessert. Psychic Laurie Hull will conduct private readings. On Saturday, after a fabulous breakfast, there’s a show
at the dinner theater, a walking ghost tour of Cape May, and a chance to conduct your own psychic investigation, using “professional ghost detecting tools.” If you prefer scary stories with a human at the center, sign up for a Murder Mystery Weekend at Elaine’s, on April 8 or 22, or May 13. Friday night starts with a cocktail reception, where you will meet the suspects. Throughout the weekend, you’ll be provided with clues to make sense of the mayhem while you enjoy all that Elaine’s has to offer, from complimentary, made-to-order breakfasts, to rocking chairs on the veranda, to happy hour with music. Check your email from the sunroom — there is free wifi throughout the hotel. Submit your solution on Sunday morning, and if you are right, you’ll receive a prize. Elaine’s is located in the center of town, an easy walk from shops and the beach. The Food Network named Elaine’s one of the top five dinner theaters in the country, and the rooms in the inn have been recently renovated. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
was never much of a one for Nazi salutes. This was a wee bit awkward back in the 1930s, when I was having tea at Buckingham Palace, and The Duke of Windsor surprised us all by saying, “You must ALL try this: it’s hot from Europe and THE next big thing!” and popped a shy little Seig Heil right over muffins! Well, I was livid, and slapped his silly little face with my left hand while sipping tea with my right and not spilling a single drop. Of course, that was my signal to leave, as those Beefeaters are not to be trifled with and one could not in these days strike a Royal with impunity. Not like now: why, I remember the time I kicked that oaf Prince Philip right in the Cabanas one night after he called me by a racial slur, having mistaken my oaken tan as a sign of African ancestry. Not one person lifted a hand to defend him, and in fact Queen Lizzie winked at me (let me tell you a story about me and Lizzie some day: it will shock and surprise, and make you view the succession to the English throne with amusement) and so I jumped
through the (closed) French windows to the garden 30 feet below, still wihout spilling a drop of tea. Anyways, in the years that followed I was always fast to correct the manners of anyone raising their hand in that fashion, usually with the aid of my constant wartime companion, Mr Thompson (the Tommy gun, in case the joke passed you by). “Mr Thompson wants to speak to you,” I would intone drily, pausing to explain: “This is Mr Thompson. He’s a machine gun....” Actually, I adapted my “This is Mr Thompson” joke when I came home in 1945 with that fine
weapon in my kit bag. In time, people from 100 miles around knew that to offend a D’Catur would lead inevitably to an introduction to Mr Thompson and the rather awkward moment when they realised they would have to pretend to get the joke. In the end, my faithless manservant, Kitchener, fearing for the population of Cape May (he needn’t have feared too much: the damn thing was about as accurate as a drunk man peeing on the sidewalk), confiscated it, returning it once a year only, for our annual secret (oops) Post-St Patrick’s Day Hunt (do not start me on the Irish... or the Scotch). I think, too, that he has replaced the bullets with blanks, as I am fairly certain I loosed off several hundred rounds at that rogue James Quinn at the Ebbitt, and the only casualty was the tip of my finger when I caught it in the trigger guard. That is probably for the best, as I wish none of my fellow citizens any harm, assuming they do not Nazi salute. Or tuck their shirts into their pants. Or fail to tip their hat at a lady.

Bird Droppings
B
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ird watching, as the name implies, is more than identifying birds and ticking them off on a list. As someone attuned to birds, watching their behavior facilitates intimacy with the entire natural world. Take Sunday. Warm, west winds clear skies. Perfect day for a walk and taking the pulse of the seasons. So there I was walking down Turkey Point Road when a maneuver I have not seen in four months caught my eye. There sallying out of a roadside maple was a yellow-rumped warbler still in non-breeding plumage. So? You knowledgeable birders are thinking. Yellow-rumped warblers are common winter residents. Yes they are, able to hold body and soul together during the cold winter months by switching over to a diet of berries, primarily bayberry and poison ivy berries. More insect-dependent kin are obliged to winter farther south in the tropics. These won’t be back in North America until May. But note my use of the word “sallying.” To pluck berries, birds don’t need to sally out.
The appropriate gleaning technique for berry picking is hopping or hovering. But this warbler was launching itself into space, then returning to the tree. It executed this maneuver several times and soon was joined by several other yellow-rumpeds who, leaving their berry-rich patch of woodland, leapt into space and the advancing season. The birds were, you see, snapping insects out of the air. The temperature was warm enough to support flying insects.
Winter was losing her grip on the Northern Hemisphere. Without the birds I never would have noticed. Professional birds who survive the winter don’t waste energy flying out and snapping at air. Birds don’t start wasting energy until mating season, when there is plenty to eat and the biological imperative trumps all. After three months of stale berries, even winter-thin mosquitoes must look pretty tempting to yellow-rumped warblers. With my senses seasonally calibrated I went looking for other signs of spring. Sure enough, on the drive home I passed not one but two mourning cloak butterflies. I would have missed them if I hadn’t been looking. Wintering over as adults, these somber, yellow-trimmed brown woodland butterflies emerge on the first warm day of spring already thinking about sex. But relax, dear reader... greenhead flies, strawberry flies and beach flies are still many weeks away. No-see-ums, however, are just around the corner. Pray for a windy March and a cool, rainy April.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am at my wit’s end. My wife, six-year-old son and I went camping this weekend. When we got back, I went into my son’s room and saw that one of his hamsters had devoured the other. It was a bloody mess, which I managed to clean up before he came into the room. No one at the pet store told me hamsters are territorial. If they had, I would have bought one. What do I do now? So far, I’ve been able to lie and tell my son that Fred is at the vets. Should I tell him the truth? — Hamstergate Dear Hamstergate You could tell your son the ghoulish, homicidal truth. The Answer Lady, however, suggests a little deceit is sometimes okay. Go out and buy a new hamster with its own cage and never the twain shall meet except between
Wise answers to perplexing questions
bars. Then, appease your guilt. Treat your son to a day devoted to him. Start with a trip to the Cape May Bird Observatory and begin teaching him about nature. Later, when you explain the new two-cage policy, you can talk to him about the predatory nature of animals, but birding will be a good beginning. Then journey up the 99 steps of the Cape May Lighthouse. Enjoy that view. Finally, end the trip with a visit to The Original Fudge Kitchen and share a pound or two of fudge. And, for goodness sake, keep those hamsters apart.
Dear Answer Lady My oldest daughter has decided to move back to Colorado which means reuniting with her abusive ex-husband. When she returned to Cape May 18 months ago, he followed her here and she ended up with a broken jaw. When she threatened to press charges, he scurried back to Colorado and I was the happiest person in the world. I try to talk to her about it, but she says it’s none of my business. — Powerless Dear Powerless You can ask someone she respects to talk to her — an aunt or a friend. You can make sure you keep the lines of communication open. Refrain from bringing up the subject until she does and you can be there for her when he strikes again — and he will. Make the days before her departure memorable. A girls’ weekend is the ticket, beginning with Cape May Day Spa. Get the works and don’t forget to bring mimosas. Go on a shopping spree on Washington Street Mall. Buy her jewelry at the Whale’s Tale or Henry’s as a remembrance of the afternoon you spent together and a reminder that she is loved.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
t was a different time, before my time, but was it all that different from today? 1936. The Olympic Games were being hosted by Nazi Berlin. The German regime wanted to legitimatize its existence among civilized nations. Leaders of the United States Olympic Committee were uncertain if we should participate. Enter a young athlete named James Cleveland (J.C.) Owens. His first-grade teacher confused his initials and called him Jesse. Do we know the story of Jesse Owen? I only knew it in flashes of historical accounts, some film clips, and knowing that he won gold at the Olympics, which left Hitler smoldering in an anger that would ultimately consume him. What the movie Race captures is a feel for the time, the struggle of a young student and his coach, and a variety of confrontations Owens experienced, on and off the track. The story weaves between the US Olympic Committee and its contemplation to even appear in Berlin — and Owen’s challenges training and qualifying for the games.
Stephan James is superb in the movie Race Stephan James plays Owens wonderfully, and the normally comedic Jason Sudeikis is his college athletics coach, Larry Henry. The public and critics agree the film is admirable yet consensus seems to be that it is not worth mentioning a race for 2017 Oscars. I disagree. This film is as Oscar-worthy as any of the others nominated for best picture this year. Owens’ accomplishments on the track were astonishing. What is equally amazing is that the story of this legendary Olympian
is told so beautifully for a new generation. I hope they’re listening. Originally, I contemplated pairing this article with a film about another Olympian, Eddie the Eagle. I could not give that film equal time, however. The story of a guy who “would do anything” to make an appearance in the games is gaining critical success, and it’s an excellent movie that’s fun to watch. Michael Edwards is a Brit who decides the winter high jump contest would be his chance to compete. His “accomplishments” are more a personal triumph. Taron Eggerton transforms himself to play Edwards, and Hugh Jackman plays his reluctant coach. Just competing was Edwards’ goal — certainly it was not about winning. He did capture the hearts of his country on an international stage, fleeting though his time on that stage was. Although the film is noteworthy, how can you compare it to the story of Jesse Owens? So if you see Eddie the Eagle, make sure to see Race beforehand. It’s a world of difference between enduring heroism and endearing theatrics.
