Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Easter in the Cape
ggs are a symbol of rebirth and possibility. For Christians at Easter, eggs call to mind Christ’s resurrection. For Hindus, eggs help to tell the story of creation, and people in China use eggs to tell fortunes. Eggs are also a reminder that change is inevitable. You can try to freeze a beautiful moment, to hold on to the relationship whose time has past, or the child who insists on growing up, or the season that passes too quickly, but it never works. Just like you can’t save your prettiest Easter egg forever, you can’t stop your world from changing. Sure, you can shellac that egg and put it on a shelf, but then it’s no longer doing what an egg is meant to do. Better to appreciate its beauty, make some egg salad, and trust that another beautiful egg — or moment — is in your future. If that makes you feel a little melancholy, well, that, too, will pass. Cape May offers many beautiful moments, and many ways to get your eggs, this early Easter season. This Saturday, March 26 at 10, there’s the Kiwanis Club’s
Annual Easter Egg Hunt for children — toddlers through second grade. It’s free, located at the Emlen Physick Estate, and sure to be chock full of cuteness and joyous confusion. If you’d prefer your eggs poached or scrambled, visit one of Cape May’s restaurants for a memorable breakfast. The Easter Bunny might even join you. Can you match Easter tradition with the potential for chilly weather? Show off your ingenuity, and your Easter style, with the Cape May Easter Fashion Stroll, Sunday, March 27 at 1 pm on the 300 block of the
Washington Street Mall. Registration begins at noon, and the judging categories are: 3 and younger, 4 to 6, 7 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 and older, best dressed lady, man, couple, family and best Easter bonnet. The rain location is Our Lady Star of the Sea parish hall. Perhaps egg salad and cucumber sandwiches are your thing. Congress Hall is brewing up a very special tea luncheon this spring break — the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Children 6 and up can practice their best behavior with a mini etiquette class and participate in a fancy craft. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party will be held Tuesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 31 at 11 and 2. $35 per child, $15 per accompanying adult. Seating for this event is very limited and must be booked in advance — call (609) 884-6583 for reservations. Seatings may be consolidated to one time. Congress Hall also brings you a lifesized Candyland, Monday through Friday, March 28 to April 1, 11-4. There will be train rides, prizes and candy. $10 per participant aged 4 and up. Reservations are not required. Next week: April Fools Rule

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have mixed feelings about Easter. Oh, I like the traditional boiling, painting then rolling downhill of the Shoebies (even though, for politically correct reasons we seem for the most part to have replaced the Shoebies with eggs...damn these times we live in), and I am even prepared to turn off the anti-personnel mines in the Mansion’s grounds so as not to accidentally reduce the Easter Bunny to tiny clumps of hair and basket. As an aside, did you know the Bunny originated in Cape May? And is, or was, an actual living and breathing giant lagomorpha? If you have lived in Cape May all your life, you will have grown up with the knowledge that some mornings the vegetable patch would have been trampled, along with any fence, wall or other obstacle, and that giant footprints were visible in the ruins. Oh, we pretend it is in fact the usual habit of this city’s resident Scotchmen, who tend to run amok after a malt or 10 in The Brown Room. But we know better. Well, you will also know that the Bunny
has an annual and short-lived, remorseful period, during which he tries to make amends by delivering gifts to the townsfolk he has wronged. Admittedly, the fiction that has grown up around him has made the gifts lovely chocolate eggs, and the bunny himself is portrayed as being a rather well-groomed fellow in a little waistcoat and breeches. The truth is, he is a five-feet-tall nightmare of matted fur, teeth and red glowing eyes, and no man or woman who casts eyes on his unclothed majesty will ever be the same again. His basket tends to be filled with what-
ever trinkets he has saved from his “dietary variations”, as we call those lost wandering visitors and Wildwooders he consumes. I have a soft spot for him, and see in him the spirit of the Old Cape May. Anyway, my own Easter memories are conflicted: in those days I was a soldier, a member of the Royal Scots and proud to be the regiment known as Pontius Pilate’s Bodygyard. That is not to say we were proud of what “went down” (as the kids might say) that day, and Pilate himself was a total ass of a man. I was glad to be away from there, with only my cloak, passage home and a fragment of the True Cross to call my own. Well, I say “fragment”, I mean “most of”. I must remember where I put it for safe keeping, and presume a local museum would be mildly interested in giving it a home for a while? I may have to ask them to look after the Ark of the True Covenant, also, as really, I need to clear out some space. Now where did I put it? I think it served as a coffee table for a while and is now in the basement keeping my back catlogue of Beano Comic for Boys flat.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
nother season of birding is upon us. Beginning May 14, at 7:30am, you can join me and CMBO Associate naturalists any Monday at the Nature Conservancy parking lot off Sunset Boulevard for a 1.5-mile, two-hour exploration of all things birdy. Expect to see and hear 30-50 species, including many new spring arrivals, like great egret, tree swallow, Forster’s tern, American oystercatcher. You bring the enthusiasm, we provide the optics and expertise. Cape May can be counted upon to provide birds. So add another dimension to your love of Cape May. Engage the wild side. No place offers easier access to more bird species than Cape May. That’s why Cape May is world famous. The Grand Canyon of Birding, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world. If you are a new birder, arrive a little early so we can fit you with loaner binoculars. At the end of the walk check off the bird species you found on a bird checklist and you are well on your way to enjoying a great new hobby — one enjoyed by 47,000,000 Americans, most
of whom will NOT be in the parking lot with us. Spring migration is just starting, so most birders won’t be here until May when those colorful migrant warblers arrive. Yes, Mr or Ms New Birder, you are getting in at the right time, the beginning of an exciting new year at The Migration Mainline. Yes, young birders are welcome, so bring the kids. On our World Series of Birding, the youth division is the fastest-growing segment of this 100-team event. Home schoolers, in particular, it turns out, make avid birders. Binoc-
ulars and a bird field guide (FYI, that’s a book) turn every backyard into a science classroom. Are you despairing because your little Dick, Jane or Sally is glued to their iPhone? Wean them with binoculars or better still, “Wow” them. Binoculars focused on flowers is like stepping into a Georgia O’Keeffe painting. Binoculars trained on a pollinating honey bee is like being cast into a National Geographic special. Binoculars trained on a cardinal is like becoming the color red. Even Timothy Leary never saw a color this vibrant. Cape May is not the planet’s only famous birding destination. Use it as your stepping stone to a planet filled with treasure. After your first morning of birding you’ll only have 9,950 species to go before seeing all the birds on planet Earth. But getting 5% of the planet’s birds in a two-hour walk isn’t a bad start. I’ll hope to see you Monday. Dress warmly. It will be cooler on the beach. For more information: www.birdcapemay.org. Or stop by Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point for a free bird check list, birding map, and event schedule.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I don’t know what to do about my daughter. Her father and I spoiled her terribly when she was a child, but we were always a close family. She and I have been estranged since I divorced her father. Last year he died and instead of bringing us closer together, it seems to have driven us farther apart. I invited her over to dinner last week. I cooked all her favorite foods and when I went to serve them, she told me she was on a diet and only ate a handful of vegetables. It hurt me deeply and she knew it. What can I do? — Unwanted, Unloved Dear Unloved The Answer Lady is tempted to suggest inviting her over again for dinner and offering her a plate with a single lettuce leaf while you

feast on a plateful of yummy food. That may not do much to heal old wounds, however. As the Bonnie Raitt song goes, “I can’t make you love me,” but maybe you can make her like you. Small steps. Try inviting her to a game of trivia with your friends at Joe McLaughlin’s Trivia at Oyster Bay on Wednesday nights. Gather a group for bowling over at Island Bowl in Wildwood and include her in on the event. And stop catering to her. Instead, give her some breathing room so she can learn to see you with different eyes.
Dear Answer Lady My mother is trying to guilt me into not moving out of the house. I am 27 years old and I want to live with my girlfriend and future wife. I’m afraid I might buckle under. I have before. She’s good and she’s subtle. A few jabs: “You know, the dog may die with you not here to take him out;” “You know, your father could have a heart attack now that he has to start mowing the lawn.” And my personal favorite: “You know, I’ve been sober for 10 years. I’d hate to relapse now. It would kill me.” How do I deal with that? — Guilt Ridden Dear Guilt Ridden Stop enabling her. She’s a pro, but you have to be strong or you will be 50 and still living at home. This is your chance. Carpe diem! But to appease your guilt, the Answer Lady recommends calling Cape Wind Florist and sending her a bouquet the day you move out. Pop over to Wagging Tail and buy a fancy leash for your parents to use when they walk the dog. And get a Cuban cigar at Up In Smoke for dad to puff on whilst he mows the lawn. Then live your life. Sounds like you’ve earned it.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
t happens every spring. No, I don’t mean the trees blooming (although this is my favorite tree-changing season!). No I’m talking about praise films. Because of all the religious holidays, there are a lot of faith-based movies that appear in theaters and on television. When I was a kid, this season meant that you’d be able to catch the 1956 classic The Ten Commandments on television. This year is no different with a string of movies aimed at believers. Reveal here: I’m one of those believers. Unfortunately, I’ve always found a lot of the movies that come out around this time as very heavy-handed in their expression of faith. Many of these stories try to give you a holy bop you over the head, ensuring that people who do not share my beliefs would likely not want to touch these films with a ten foot staff. (See what I did there?) Ten Commandments reference earlier… Moses carried a staff… oh forget it. This year there is at least one film that has evolved past the simple use of religious theme as clobbering stick. The movie is Risen from Affirm Films, which is a studio dedi-
Risen is one of the better Biblically inspired films cated to religious films. And before you think this might be a zealot start-up, it was created in 2007 by Sony Pictures (yes, “the” Sony Pictures). This would be the first time you’ve seen a film reviewed in this column from this studio — for a reason. Most of the productions I’ve seen from Affirm Films have been heavy-handed. Risen is different. The story follows one Roman soldier, played by Joseph Fiennes, as he is tasked by Pontius Pilate to find the
body of a recently crucified, itinerant and controversial preacher… named Jesus. Pilate is convinced the preacher’s friends stole the body. The film is gritty and careful not to get into stereotypes or worse yet cliché! In an interview, Fiennes called the film “CSI: Jerusalem.” His character searches for a dead body, questions witnesses, and tracks down all of the preacher’s friends who scattered after the trial and execution. This film is innovative and compelling without being preachy. There are other films out this season as well. Young Messiah tells the story of the boy Jesus (played by Adam Greaves-Neal). The film isn’t terrible, but it does uses actors who appear more Anglican than Aramaic — and those English accents… please. Still on some levels this movie works well. Next week, I’ll review Zootopia, the latest animated feature from Disney. I’ve only seen it twice — may need to watch one more time before I start writing (just to give you a hint of how much I plan to sing this film’s praises).
