Ramblings From The Editor
B
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ig things are happening around Cape Island. If you haven’t seen them for yourselves, you’ve likely heard grumblings about them. Isn’t it true that the unhappy voices, however few they might be, are always the loudest? First up, there’s Rotary Park, which is getting a total overhaul thanks to the Fund for Cape May, which has raised around $500,000 as a result of the Ice Ball, a magnificent event which has now been held twice in Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom. The fund is working hand in hand with the City of Cape May to revitalize the park, which was, let’s all be honest, overdue a serious facelift. Yes, this means the oft-photographed bandstand is no more. And although it’s always a shame to see the demise of a building which holds special memories for people, let’s not get too carried away here. The bandstand was dedicated on July 4, 1974. It’s not a Victorian building. It has no great significance to anyone, unless you had your picture taken there on the day of your
wedding. It came into this world the same time as Monty Python’s Flying Circus hit the USA and the same year The Godfather II was released. (Yes, that’s right, the original Godfather is older than the bandstand.) There was an attempt to save the bandstand as part of the new park, but it was beyond repair. The choice was simple: allow a decrepit and dangerous pavilion to rot for nostalgia’s sake, or build a new one… also for nostalgia’s sake. After all, I anticipate generations to come
creating new memories at the new bandstand, just beside the new bike racks and penny fountain. Only 18 inches off the ground, the pavilion-in-planning will allow for much better viewing of the bands that play there. Remember: Cape May was among the few US cities that led the charge for pedestrian-friendly city layouts in the 1970s, with the building of Washington Street Mall under Mayor Frank Gauvry. That project met enough detractors to fill dozens of Rotary Park bandstands, most of whom ate their words when the mall proved a complete success. (Though I should say that I feel nostalgic when I look at old pictures of Washington Street before the mall, even though I was a long way away from Cape May back then.) The appeal of Cape May’s brand rests largely in the town’s preservation of historic structures, which coexist cheek-by-jowl with lovely new amenities. Let’s see if we can’t enjoy the new park, smack-dab in the center of our National Historic Landmark City, before we go writing it off. Speaking of new things replacing estab-

Page 14 lished old things, come this summer the Morrow’s Nut House space on the mall will be transformed into the Cape May Sweet House, owned by Will Riccio, who cut his candy-selling teeth by doing a stellar job of taking over Louisa’s Chocolate Bar (and also Louisa’s Café). Before those wellmeaning Cape May fans who aren’t keen on change get themselves in a tizzy (there was a little outburst on the Cool Cape May Facebook page), let’s say this: the owners of Morrow’s had to retire some time, and someone else had to take over. Let’s be glad it’s Will — who knows the importance of a quality product that matches the quaint, artisanal Cape May vibe — who’s picking up the reins. But don’t let it be said that I’m fond of ALL change. I was a little perturbed to say the least when I heard of a curious new plan by Congress Hall which is part of their big birthday celebration — the grand old hotel is 200 years old this year. The hotel’s marketing geniuses didn’t want to go down the same-old, same-old route when it came to marking this very special celebration. Instead... drumbeat... they are spending almost $250,000 on sandblasting the historic building to take it back to the brickwork that was there when the current building was erected, in 1879. That means the big yellow icon will be a big brick-colored icon. I asked Curtis Bashaw, the hotel’s managing partner, if he intended to keep the hotel that way, or repaint it after the 200th celebrations. “We’re not sure yet. It’s a lot of money to take the paint off, and I’m not sure we want to be spending much the same again on repainting it. I guess we will see what the reaction from the community is like before making a final decision.” Stripping and sandblasting work was due to begin this Friday, with a completion date of May 15. More fool them, if you ask me.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, playing the fool
t’s that time of year again — time to play a harmless prank or two on the people you love. Tape the sprayer on the sink in the “on” position. Replace Oreo cream with toothpaste. Shortsheet a bed. Have some fun. The origin of this nonsense is unclear. Maybe humans are so happy when winter chill gives way to spring warmth that we just get silly. For centuries, people have hosted lighthearted festivals around the beginning of April. In Iran, people picnic on Sizdah Bedar. Purim has been described as the most fun-filled day on the Jewish calendar. The French have been marking April Fish, or poisson d’April, their version of a “kick-me” sign taped on someone’s back, since 1508. One popular theory holds that April Fool’s Day stems from the change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, when New Year’s Day was pushed to January. Too bad Chaucer references it in his Canterbury tales almost two hundred years earlier. In 2009, scholar Joseph Boskin told the AP that the April Fool’s tradition began
when Emperor Constantine let his jester, Kugel, rule for one day. The story ran, but Boskin had made the whole thing up. Even distinguished organizations love to play pranks. Newspapers in Nordic countries run one false story on April 1. The BBC ran a story on the Swedish spaghetti harvest in the 1950s. Scientific American ran a chess prank in 1975, NPR claimed to be sponsored by Soylent Green, and Taco Bell claimed to have purchased the Liberty Bell and renamed it the Taco Liberty Bell in 1996. The Clinton White House responded with the announce-
ment of the renaming of the Lincoln Mercury Memorial. In Cape May, you can celebrate at the first annual April Fool’s Day Parade. Dress in your silliest outfit and bring your silliest friends to the corner of Beach Avenue and Beach Drive just before high tide. This year’s grand marshall will be the Jersey Devil, flying in from the Pine Barrens. The band Fish, a Phish tribute band, will provide music. Make your own Scallop Shell Bikini Top under the guidance of special guest, Ariel, the Little Mermaid. Come early for a meet and greet with Twitter sensation, Mary Lee the shark. The meeting is free, but participants need to sign a liability waiver and provide contact information for their next of kin. Stay late for the humpback whale rides. Whale-riders must be over 18, at least 46 inches tall, in good health, and have the ability to hold their breath for 20 to 40 minutes. Pregnant women and those with back of heart issues are advised not to ride. Tickets are $15. Please note that whale riding can not begin until Mary Lee pings at least three miles from Cape May.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
was never that fond of Superman. It wasn’t the underpants-over-the-tights look, though that kind of thing is really only permissible in chaps under five and over 80. It was his insufferable confidence and that midly condescending “oh THAT’S how you do things on Earth... how... interesting” patter of his. He used to hold court in The Brown Room, crushing lumps of coal into diamonds for the young lads and fixing his ludicrously pomaded hair. Mind you, he did do a very good Freddie Mercury turn at Martini Beach. Batman was more of this city’s kind of chap: brooding, complex, by turns brutal and tender, and apt to punch you in the head then weep over your prone body. He would cause all sorts of mischief at the Ugly Mug, start a fight, deliver some excruciating but rather amusing puns, then swoop out over the rooftops. We do lack imposing vantage points, o he was reduced to hanging around street corners in the dark. This led to all sorts of awkwardness, and the occasional $20 bill shoved into his utility belt by hopeful Shoebies.
But it was a fateful meeting between those two here in Cape May that led to the rather execrable movie out right now. From what I could understand of that film, in between naps, Batman and Superman fight viciously for two hours. The actual events it was based on took place one evening at Martini Beach. The two of them were not really that close: Superman was solar powered and Batman seldom came out in the daytime (due to hangovers rather than that whole bat thing). What happened, if I recall, was that Superman was trying to order a Metropolis (really just a Manhattan with a
little umbrella and a cherry in it) and Batman was into his tenth Dark and Stormy. Well, rude comments were made about cherries, retorts were directed regarding a certain grown men’s liking for rubber suits and as is often the way in Martini Beach late at night, chests were prodded, cold breath froze drinks, Baterangs smashed windows and heat rays bored holes in the walls. I feared it was about to get really ugly, and was reaching into my pocket for my lucky lump of Kryptonite and the lead-lined cosh, when out of nowhere, Superman shouted “You’re getting fat!” and Batman roared “You’re thinning on top!” Well, the place fell silent, and I and anyone else with an ounce of sense was wondering how fast we might run away. Instead of bone-crushing violence, though, both men burst into tears, and started blubbering about the pressures of saving the world whilst eating well, whether a superhero could be bald and still credible, and whether Alfred loved either man, both, or in fact regarded them as blithering fools in silly costumes (that last option was mine).
Face it, my dear... ...it’s April Fools’!

Bird Droppings
Y
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ou missed a good one, bird walk, that is, March 21, 7:30-9:30, South Cape May Meadows. Fifty–two species in two hours. Not a bad tally so early in the season. Twelve species of waterfowl, seven hawks, including a crushing look at peregrine and bald eagle. Don’t despair, there’s another walk scheduled for next Monday and every Monday thereafter until November. The walk is leisurely. From the Nature Conservancy Parking lot on Sunset Boulevard to the beach is less than a mile and with lots of stops. With so many birds around, it’s hard to keep a steady pace. Only your cardiologist would find fault with this. Wind, weather, date all conspire to keep things varied and interesting. It’s the job of the field trip leaders to sort things out and make sure you get the kind of look that tickles the sensory centers of your brain. So discover what 47,000,000 of your countrymen have discovered: the pleasure of watching birds.
It doesn’t matter if you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent. Bird watching is a nonpartisan, equal opportunity avocation. Thomas Jefferson was a bird watcher, so was Teddy Roosevelt and FDR. Donald Trump? I know his life list includes eagles and birdies, and I also know that he is interested in making his golf courses bird-friendly. So what’s stopping YOU? You live in the most celebrated bird-watching location in North America.
It’s cheap, the people are friendly and the only one keeping score is you. Come on. Join us. Monday morning 7:30. Just pull into the parking lot, pay your $6.00 and get an eye full of WOW. The non-member price is usually $10 but bring this copy of Exit Zero and you get to pay the Cape May Bird Observatory member’s price. Tell them Seymore sent you. If there’s any question, it can be directed to me. I’ll be there. You bring the high expectations, we supply the binoculars and the birds. The birds you get to keep in your mind, the binoculars you’ll have to return. Dress for cool temperatures. It may be windy on the beach. And yes, by all means bring the kids (children under 12 are free). Do let the leaders know if this is your first bird-watching experience and plan to arrive early if you are unfamiliar with using binoculars for a tutorial. See you Monday and for once I won’t Seymore Thanu.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am beside myself. My fiancé and I have been together two years and have set a wedding date for September. Over the weekend I used his computer when mine died on me and I saw he was on Craig’s List arranging a rendezvous with someone called Buxom Big Betty. When I confronted him, he laughed about it and blamed it on his friend Carl. But when I jokingly asked Carl about Big Betty he clearly did not know what I was talking about. Now what do I do? — Betrayed by Big Betty Dear Betrayed You’ve been betrayed all right but Buxom Big Betty had nothing to do with it. You’re lying fiancé is at issue. What you do is pack
Wise answers to perplexing questions
his things and throw them out the window. Or pack your things and run out the door as fast as your heels can carry you. Your sixth sense knows the truth. So, when he sweet talks you into believing you are crazy and you want to believe him and walk down the aisle with him, imagine your life six years from now when he doesn’t even bother to hide his predilection for Buxom Bettys. Life is short. Don’t waste a minute on an unwise choice. In the meantime, an escape to Victorious is in order. A chic frock, a pretty bauble and
then pop over to Good Scents and feel the uuummmm. It quiets the senses just walking through the door. Dear Answer Lady A group of us play tennis at least two or three times a week. One of our group is a terrible player. Nice guy, but cannot volley to save his soul. Problem is he takes it upon himself to organize us, despite the fact that we usually have already done so to spare ourselves from having to play with him. Now he finds himself the odd man out and we feel badly, but the point of playing is to exercise and improve our skills. No one improves playing with him. Is there a polite way of telling him or should we just go on the way we are? — Luv, Set, Match Dear Luv Be a mensch not a schlemiel. Man up and tell him the truth. Offer to play a match with him apart from your regular one. The truth will sting, but it has to be better than being treated like a piranha. And include him in your next Ugly Mug Terrible Tuesday outing.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
magine a world, a more evolved civilization where all animals (predators and prey) live in a city of peace. The name of the city is Zootopia, Disney’s latest animated film. The story begins with a small bunny, Judy (voice of Ginnifer Michelle Goodwin) from a nearby village who wants to become a police officer. A bunny police officer? Impossible. It turns out perhaps the only thing that is impossible for our lead character is to fight against prejudice and all the people who won’t believe a bunny can be a police officer. This includes her own parents. Somehow she makes it to graduation. On her first day on the job, she was not beyond the suspicion of her supervisor and colleagues. She’s put on parking duty as light work that she could handle. As you might expect as in any city, parking detail is less than glamorous. But she meets a sly fox (Justin Bateman) who at first scams her. As Judy takes on a case to find a missing person (oh I mean a missing weasel), she entraps the fox (really, no pun intended) to help.
Zootopia is Disney’s latest animated feature Zootopia is a fun detective adventure with well-developed characters and beautiful art direction. Below the surface it explores our own less-than-ideal societal differences as prey begin to question if they can truly live at peace with predators. A few predators begin to go beyond simple lawbreaking and turn “savage.” Is this just in their nature? Is it impossible for weaker citizens of Zootopia to think any predator can be anything but savage?
Pretty deep for an animated film. This movie gets high marks for a substantial story filled with rich symbolism. And also gets high praise works for animation, creative dialogue, and just good old fashion fun. You’ll notice a few voices such as J.K. Simmons, Oscar-winning actor from Whiplash (2014), and the pop star Shakira. So kids love this movie and parents can sit through it without feeling patronized (or worse demoralized). The writers managed to stay clear of bathroom humor throughout, and I for one was appreciative of a more civilized storyline. Although a little sluggish at times, and certainly not on the level of Disney Pixar’s Toy Story or Inside Out movies, this film is simply more evolved than most animated features — and well worth seeing. There are some slim pickings in theaters these days. Sorry, I’ve got little no interest in Batman v Superman, so if you see it please mail me a sentence or two (to capemayfilm@hotmail.com) so I can publish something here. In fact, if you ever want to send a note or two on any movie, let me know!

ELVIS is more than just a “hound dog.” He’s a Boston/Jack mix and all dog in a little body. Elvis loves squeaky toys and long walks. He lived with a dog in his previous home and she was his best friend. Elvis would love to live in a new home with other animal companions to play with. Please stop on over any time to visit this little rockstar!
TINSEL is a sprightly 18-month-old female Catahoula mix who came in as a stray. Her large ears eagerly listen for commands and she already knows sit, paw, and down. Tinsel’s favorite activity is chasing rope toys in the yard which keeps her busy for extended periods of time. Come adopt this playful pup today!
PRINCESS was bred a lot so she may need some exercise and TLC to get in better shape. If you like short dogs, she would be perfect for you! She tends to get nervous when meeting new people but loves other dogs, cats and kids. Princess is five years old and 50 pounds. Please come and visit her, you won’t be sorry.

PENNY has been waiting very patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to her forever home. She is a little shy at first, but doesn’t take long to warm up. She would be great for any home, but a barn would be best. If you think she’s a good fit for you, stop in at the shelter and give her a second chance at happiness!
ESTER is a respectable older lady that would love to finish out her twilight years in a home. Some place warm where she can lay comfortably, getting the chill out of those old bones would be most fitting. Ester would be perfect for another senior, and for free! Come in today and meet your new furry companion.

CRUELLA is her name, but the least fitting for this gentle pussy cat! She is an eight-yearold big girl who loves to eat. Although she is large, she is healthy, just a bit big boned. Her eyes are two different colors which makes Cruella one unique kitty. She qualifies for “Senior for Seniors” so if you’re 62 years old, her adoption fees are waived.
