Ramblings From The Editor
O
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ne of my favorite magazines Coastal Living just named Cape May one of America’s best towns for a Valentine’s weekend getaway. We’re in good company — Maine’s Kennebunkport and Florida’s Amelia Island also made the cut. I like to think that — in addition to Cape May’s natural beauty — this latest accolade comes down, at least in part, to the island’s array of off-season offerings. Offerings such as the Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Cape May Chili and Chowder Cook-Off, held last Sunday on the fifth floor of the Grand Hotel. The day was so clear and beautiful that from the penthouse ballroom you could see all the way to Delaware. Stirring stuff. It was against this pretty wonderful backdrop that contestants comprising home cooks and professionals dished out 15 tasty offerings to a record 516 people. Kudos go to Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille, who took home the prize for Best Overall dish for the third year in a row. Kudos also goes to, ahem, our own EZ
Cookhouse entry, which earned second place in the chowder category, after the Grand Hotel. Our entry was the Bombay Crab Chowder. The self-congratulation doesn’t end there. I was totally delighted, and not a little surprised, that our Cookhouse earned a spot in New Jersey Monthly’s Best 30 New Restaurants feature, in their February issue. It’s Grammy and Oscar season, but, worry not, I’m not about to give a lengthy, tearful speech
here. But I would like to hail the work of our staff artist, Mike DeMusz, who is also pretty handy in the kitchen. Despite the fact that he had never eaten, never mind cooked, Indian or Thai food before, he’s done a remarkable job with our curry dishes. And big thanks to Tisha Roussos, who joined us in August and has been the rock of our dining room. The girl is a machine. We recently got slammed on a Saturday night, with 56 people turning up. Tisha was the only server on duty (it’s January — we weren’t expecting much). Not only did she serve them, but she bussed the tables AND made the soups and salads. Without breaking a sweat. Impressive ain’t the word. New Jersey Monthly is running its annual Jersey Choice Restaurant Poll, and we’re a contender in the categories of Best New and Best Indian restaurants. You have until February 28 to vote, and we’d sure love some love. All you have to do is Google the poll, and you’ll be prompted through the rest. We’re open Fridays and Saturdays at our place, from 5pm. End of shameless plug.

Jimmy Valm is the new Director of Brewing Operations at Cape May Brewing Company. Welcome to town, Jimmy!
If you’re a horsey person, deSatnick Real Estate are offering the Schuman homestead on Taylor Lane, off Seashore Road, for $1.3 million. Major bonus? You get to be my neighbor. If you’re interested (no tire kicking, please), call Todd deSatnick on 609-884-1300. I’m going to end with a plea from my wife, Diane. She’s a feminist and for a long time, she’s had a really hard time with seeing mentions of pirates and princesses. “Girls can play with swords, too!” Which is why her blood boiled at the sight of this phrase on the website of the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities... “From rough and ready buccaneers to the young ladies who prefer tiaras to swords, the youngsters will love this event!” So, to everyone out there who organizes these kinds of events, how about some blurring of the genders? Some girls might want to be pirates and some boys might want to be princesses. And who are we to sto them? Until next time, enjoy this romantic island.
³
Oh, and if you just can’t get enough chili, stop by the cookoff happening at Tabernacle United Methodist Church on February 27 from 1-3pm. I’ve talked before about how I just love it when local restaurants or bars use the phrase “world-famous” to describe anything from their wings to their cheesesteaks. Come on now, it’s unlikely anyone outside of Cape May County has heard of them, let alone the rest of planet Earth. Which is why huge, and I mean HUGE, kudos has to go to Gaiss’ Market. The Villas-based meat-makers recently won gold and silver medals for their smoked kielbasa and hot dogs respectively. And the judges? The German Butchers’ Association. That’s like being told your pastries are the best in the world by the Danish Bakers Association. Or that your tacos are the best in the world by the Mexican Restaurant Association. Or that... okay, you get the idea. Congratulations to John and Kathy Louderback and the rest of the Gaiss crew. Speaking of good things happening to good local companies, congratulations to Jimmy Valm, who will be taking over as Director of Brewing Operations at Cape May Brewing Company. Jimmy boasts an impressive resumé, including the
³
³
last three years spent as Production Manager at the acclaimed Brooklyn Brewery. Before that, Jimmy worked as a brewing shift manager for Heineken UK, and studied brewing and distilling science at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. (So you know he’s got to be a good egg.) We’re looking forward to seeing what he’s got on tap. As long as he doesn’t mess with my beloved Honey Porter, I’m good. PS: The fact that The Blue Pig Tavern and Fins have
now joined Lucky Bones in serving this wonderful brew is very good news for me. Fancy your own horse farm? Nearly nine acres on this lovely island, with three barns, three riding rings and 35 stalls? I do, though my first choice would be to convert it to a rescue center where all the mutts no one wants can run around all day long and sleep in a warm, cozy pen at night. But enough of that sentimental stuff.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know that 98 per cent of clowns are (or go on to be) serial killers? It’s a fact, I assure you. The remaining two per cent fall victim to their murderous brethren. The thought came to mind during Cape May’s annual (and little-known) Clown Cull: for reasons known to themselves, a great many clowns from all over the world come to winter in our fair city, in the manner of roosting vampires. A small band of us are tasked with rooting them out (using boat hooks and a flamethrower I brought home from World War Two). This cull takes place right after the Cape May Chimp Roundup, which itself starts the day the Rogue Shoebie Hunt ends. It can be a messy and noisy affair (watersquirting flowers and amusing air horns) and no easy thing. Anyways, I digress: this column was meant to be about matters of cheerier nature, but I came across a stray red nose (I keep it as a souvenir) as I was settling down to polish my column. My newspaper column. My GOD you people have your minds in the gutter...
I was going to write about the “extreme” cold, and how in my day it wasn’t considered officially chilly until the very oxygen in the air solidified and fell as snow. And even then, the first person to wear gloves was a laughing stock. Why, I recall the night in The Brown Room when it was so cold that we had to put ice cubes in our drinks to warm them up, and we all had a bet as to who was the toughest. Most of us were armwrestling in the usual homoerotic fashion (I lost to Amelia Earhart) but that blowhard Ernie Hemingway went too far as always, and stripped naked, had us douse him in whisky (blended) and then
he ran out into the sub-zero night for 10 laps around the hotel. By the time he returned we were all in agreement that indeed he was the toughest of us all, but when we shook hands to congratulate him, damned if every finger didn’t fall off the man, followed by his eyebrows, lips, toes, ears, nose — and Little Ernie. His absence of facial features made it hard to gauge his mood, but he did seem to be happy to have won. As far as the D’Catur household goes, of course, we have the heating turned off from September to August (it is, I admit, a little perverse, but that was Ma D’Catur’s way, and she was the only one who understood the thermostat timer) and so have learned to cope in stoic fashion. Of course we have the fur coats from my previous days as a big game hunter (all wrong, I assure you, but it seemed a shame to discard the pelts) and so the mansion is a riot of bear, leopard, lion and tiger skin. And of course Yorkshire Terrier. Though in Young Albert’s case the pelt is his own and attached to his very alive person.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter is 27 and has had a fractious relationship with her father since he left us when she was 12. He was never an attentive father, but when it came to my youngest, he was MIA. In the last five years, he has tried to mend fences, but he will never be able to be the father she thinks she deserves. He tends to write a check and think he has done his bit. Every holiday is a scene in which she screams at him for not spending enough time with her, not spending enough money on her and of favoring his new family over her. I feel bad and am guilty about what happened but is there nothing I can do to make her see this approach is futile and, more importantly, is putting a strain on any family gathering. Help! — Exasperated
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Exasperated Take your daughter to Delaney’s and over lunch tell her it is time for her to put on her big girl panties and look at her father as he is, not as she thinks he should be. She can’t bully him into being something he is not and until she accepts him for what he is and also for what he is not, her own relationships with men will be equally fractious. It’s time for you to help her to find it within herself to forgive. Meanwhile, order the Shepherd’s Pie — comfort food is a great healer.
Dear Answer Lady My grandmother insists on bringing her Chihuahua Brutus to every occasion. We can only have dinner at dog-friendly restaurants. She never visits the house without Brutus tucked into a baby carrier and he is not a kid-friendly dog, but of course, it’s my kids who are at fault when he snaps at them. Nana even brought the dog into a funeral home last week. There’s no reasoning with her and because she’s old, no one outside the family dares say anything to her. Any thoughts? — Dog Gone Mad Dear Mad There is only one answer to this dilemma — alcohol. You cannot expect to take Nana and Brutus on and come out looking like a heroine in a Bronte novel. It’s time for Plan B. Encourage the kids to stay away from Brutus. Instead of dinner, a trip to Cape May Winery is in order. Brutus will be welcome and you can immerse yourself in tasting Isaac Smith Port or a cool pino grigio. Or both. As to other social events, gently suggest the Doggie Nanny, Michelle Kiernan.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
E
ver wondered what it was like for loved ones who came to the US years ago? Sure, you’ve heard stories from them or other members of the family. But have you ever wondered what it was like — what did it feel like, what did it sound like? One of the more essential elements of the Oscar nominated best picture, Brooklyn, is that unfolds an immigrants journey right before your eyes. In the film we follow the story of Eilis, an Irish girl played by relative newcomer Saoirse Ronan. Her sister bought the ticket, but Eilis is apprehensive about going, leaving her sister to care for their aging mother. It is the 1950s. Eilis comes over by way of boat, and the trip is anything but glamorous. When she arrives, she is insufferably homesick. Letters from her sister only exacerbate the problem. It seems the only thing she can do to remedy the situation is fall in love. Enter Tony, an Italian played by Emory Cohen. And fall in love they did! These two
An exceptional film... don’t miss Brooklyn have an on-screen chemistry that is fun to watch. You can just see these two having 11 children and huge parties with quite possibly the best meatballs ever! In fact, you get to actually see the two perhaps making one of those children in a saucy scene. TMI you say? Oh get over it — no spoiler here. The two secretly marry before Eilis returns home to spend a month or so with her mother. During her time back in Ireland, she keeps the marriage a secret — and spends some close time with a young
man from town. As you watch the two getting even closer, you wonder if she’s going to stay true to her hidden vows. Despite the very real chance of this film turning into a soap opera, it stays away from that edge. It has a genuine pallet for expressing the emotions of that time period — I guess (that is to say I never lived in that time so how am I to know?). Brooklyn is an exceptional film. Does itcompare to the other films nominated for Best Picture? Maybe. It certainly is a safe film to nominate. Maybe that’s why there is such criticism about this year’s slate of diversity-challenged nominated films and actors. Oh no he didn’t just say that! Do you disagree with me? You certainly can! Voice all those opinions at the Cape May Film Festival Oscar party at Mad Batter on Sunday, February 28, 5:30. Pam and Mark are wonderful hosts putting out a beautiful spread. There’s chances to win prizes too. No reservations needed — so join us!
