Ramblings From The Editor
M
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
any of you have likely watched the Grammys on TV, the annual celebration that hails the movers and shakers in the music business. And while most of the spotlight is usually focused on the likes of Kanye, Beyonce and Taylor, there are some world-class musicians (actual musicians) who pick up Grammy awards year after year. Pat Metheny is one of those musicians. The outrageously gifted guitarist has won 20... count ’em... TWENTY Grammys. And guess what? You can see this amazing performer right here in Cape May. Or, to be completely accurate, right here in Lower Township. Pat will be headlining Exit Zero Jazz Festival, along with Ron Carter, at Lower Cape May Regional High School’s Paul Schmidtchen Theater on Saturday, April 23. As for Carter, his only claim to fame is that he’s the most-recorded jazz bass player in history. Oh, and he was a member of the legendary Miles Davis Quintet in the 1960s. A Metheny-Carter double act is apparently a rare thing in the jazz biz, which means
that once again the festival has pulled off a world-class coup. Last year, organizer Michael Kline attracted Wynton Marsalis to the festival. Marsalis, in case you didn’t know, might be the best-known, mostacclaimed jazz performer alive. Marsalis wowed the audience at the Paul Schmidtchen Theater last November, during two sellout performances. And apparently the feeling was mutual. Marsalis is returning to the festival this
fall, and this time not with his 16-strong orchestra, but with his quintet. Again, this is a major coup since Marsalis rarely plays with such a small group. So how on earth does Cape May attract such world-class performers to the jazz festival? I mentioned this before, and I mean it as no disrespect to Cape May Film Festival (which I strongly support), but this is comparable to someone like George Clooney visiting town for that particular festival. In other words... it’s huge. It’s happening because Michael Kline is one very connected, passionate and hardworking dude. After a career in the New Orleans jazz industry, Michael came back to Cape May following Hurricane Katrina. And that’s been great news for the local cultural scene. Exit Zero is a major financial backer of the festival because we believe it is a cultural juggernaut, bringing not just 5,000 people to each festival (spring and fall), but raising the stock of this area. When world-class performers come here, it can only help other

Page 14 organizations in their efforts to attract talent to this little city by the sea. And, as I’ve said before, even if you’re not a jazz fan, that doesn’t matter — Michael does a great job in mixing up a festival that also includes elements of rock, soul and pop. Anyone who saw Davina and the Vagabonds rock Carney’s last year will attest to that. If you want to see worldclass jazz, you can’t miss Metheny and Carter. If you want to dip your toes into the water, buy a Pop’s Pass for $45 now (price goes up to $55 during the festival). This allows you to get into every single club event — those which are hold in Cabanas, Carney’s and Iron Pier (upstairs from Cabanas). It’s superb value. Speaking of great musicians, this community lost a great deal with the death of George Mesterhazy, four years ago this week. But the legendary pianist’s legacy lives on, thanks to the Merion Inn, where he played many a memorable evening. There will once again be a George Mesterhazy Tribute Concert, held as part of Cape May Music Festival. The event this year will be on Sunday, June 12 at Convention Hall. For a special treat, when you buy your $25 ticket from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, tell them you want to be one of George’s Angels. Why? Because then you will be invited to the concert rehearsal/ brunch and after-party, both at the Merion Inn on that day. That’s some pretty amazing value right there. For $25 you get to watch George’s many talented friends play a tribute to him, and you get to soak up the cool vibe, and eat the good food, at the Merion, one of the city’s most beloved bars and restaurants. For tickets, call MAC at 609884-5404. Ain’t it good to live in Cool Cape May?

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get moonstruck
s there a sight more conducive to romance than the full moon reflected on the ocean? While moonlight has been linked to insanity for centuries, many cultures also link our celestial neighbor to that particular kind of crazy that comes with love. Perhaps the tendency of lovers to meet on moonlit nights is to blame. Chinese folklore credits an old man in the moon with bringing couples together. Charles Dickens described David Copperfield as a “moonstruck” slave of love, and Matthew Arnold called Tristram a “moonstruck knight.” Newlyweds go on a “honeymoon,” a term sentimentalists tie to the sweet, solitary days of new love, or to the mead couples drank to promote fertility, but cynics disagree. Samuel Johnson in 1542 compared the “mutual affection of newly-married persons to the changing moon which is no sooner full than it begins to wane,” and suggests said persons get used to it. The moon helps Rodolfo and Mimi search for the key to love in the 1896 opera La Boheme. In the 1987 movie Moonstruck, Loretta’s grandfather cautions,
“La bella luna! The moon brings the woman to the man.” When Loretta, heedless of the warning, falls in love with Ronny, the brother of her fiance, Jonny, her mother sighs, “When you love them they drive you crazy because they know they can.” No one who has been crazy in love would deny it, nor, I suspect, would any of us change a thing. You can get up your chances of being moonstruck by climbing closer to the moon at the Cape May Lighthouse Full Moon Climb. Follow the 199 steps to the top of
our friendly neighborhood beacon to get a closer look at the moon. It’s a particularly good first date option. There a bits of local history hanging on the alcoves, so when you want to take a breather, or let the speedier people behind you pass, you can find fodder to grease the conversational wheels. The tight spiral provides plenty of opportunity to talk, but it’s not too private, and the payoff at the top makes the evening memorable, even if romance doesn’t blossom. The next Full Moon Climb is Friday, April 22, from 8pm to 10 pm. (If things don’t click, you’re out of there in less than a hour, but if they do, you can linger.) Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for kids 3-12, and free for kids under three. (Do yourself a favor and don’t bring kids who are too young to climb on their own.) Purchase tickets from the Keeper at the Lighthouse that night, or buy them in advance at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street, at the Physick Estate, or online at capemaymac.org. For more information, call 609-884-5404 or 800-275-4278.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am not very fond of little men. You should not confuse this with any distaste for Little People: I had the great honor of serving in the a highly secretive WW2 unit composed almost entirely of men under four feet tall (I was one of a handful of NLPs (non-Little-People) allowed into the unit for the purpose of being able to look over hedges and walls and throwing the minute commandos through high windows). We were sent behind enemy lines to wreak tiny havoc, and that we did: the lads were able to concel themselves in spaces too small for the Nazis to think of looking, and even to disguise themselves as children. I remember once, we pretended to be a school class wishing to visit the local Gestapo HQ, and all of these tall blond uniformed maroons bending down to pinch the squad’s (close-shaven) cheeks. At a pre-arranged signal (me, the “class teacher”, whistling the first few seconds of “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round, Round Round), a score of tiny school blazers were shrugged off and stiletto daggers were removed from little lunchboxes
patterned with monkeys and bears riding tricycles. It was utter carnage, and when the military police arrived later I am told they were puzzled and horrified that none of the dead Nazis had a single wound above the waist. It led to all kinds of urban myths, and of the Führer developing an utter fear of children such that he himself never procreated. No, my distaste is for men who are merely short, and dislike the world as a result. Take Napolean Boneparte: he was a real jerk, and I could spend no more than 10 minutes in his company without putting him over my knee and delivering a good spanking. Also,
our own Colonel Henry Sawyer: the official histories paint him as a giant of a man but in reality he stood no higher than my armpit. I confess, I did not help the situation by once, after too many malts, removing his hat and patting the top of his head. That led to a duel, but since the choice of weapon was mine, and Cape May has some arcane and yet concrete laws about such things, the colonel had no choice but to agree to dueling with tickling sticks. After an hour, hysterical tears were spilling down his cheeks and he gigglingly submitted whilst damning me to hell. As for me, I often receive your letters asking a great many personal questions, including size. By that I mean height: really, get your minds out of the gutter (I never anwer that other question: instead I send an autographed woodcut. A standard envelope size is not sufficient.). The truth is, depending on a wide range of factors including (but not limited to) Cuban heels, a tall wig, an intentional slump, the ability to bow my legs on demand, I am everything from five feet five to siz feet four, often within the space of a heartbeat.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his time of year is easy for writers specializing in natural history. New bird species arriving daily. I find myself rising early and sitting on my porch to take the pulse of migration. Listening for the songs of newly arrived resident species. Robins are a din, cardinals an audio blight. But any morning now my ears will thrill to the bubbling trill of house wren, a rising and falling cascade of notes lasting perhaps two seconds but rendered about 10 times per minute. Males arrive with mouths wide open, singing rings around their territories. A warning to rival males and an invitation to females who will arrive shortly. House wrens, as the name implies, readily occupy bird boxes. Into these boxes, males build a twig platform into which females will construct a soft nest and deposit six to nine eggs. Adults may make over a thousand foodbearing trips to the nest every day — caterpillars are particularly prized, explaining why house wrens are so popular with gardeners. But the birds have a sinister side, a pen-
chant for piercing the eggs of other cavitynesting birds. To the wren, it’s about eliminating the competition and maximizing their genetic potential. It gets even darker. Rival male wrens sometimes kill the young of brooding females. You just never know what’s going on in the neighborhood, do you? Why then do people court the presence of such a dark-hearted bird? The truth is we did not court the wren’s favor so much as he courted ours. Before Europeans settled on
these shores, house wrens were limited to the edge of the great forests that dominated the northeast. The landscaping sense of Europeans appealed to the bird. Our gardens supported a host of insect prey. Our home, outbuildings and brick aback offered a wealth of nest cavities. As for the dark side of wren behavior, all I can say is that our human standards have no standing in the natural world; but anyone trying to encourage other cavity-nesting species is best advised not to put up wren boxes. There is, of course a reason why wrens have big broods and commonly nest twice a year. The young fall prey to the clever hands of marauding hands of raccoons, assorted eggeating snakes and the murderous penchant of free-floating males and outdoor cats. Still, despite assorted challenges, the fickle mating strategy seems to work for house wrens. They rank among our most common species and most studied. But as with politics and making sausage, just don’t look too close.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been seeing this man on and off for over a year. The pattern is always the same. We go out. We have a good time. We end up spending the weekend together. Then I don’t hear from him for weeks. He called me last weekend and the pattern started again until it came time to spend the weekend and I said, “No, not this time. I can’t do this.” And I walked away. But now I feel miserable. I feel like I ended it but I didn’t really want to. Should I call him and tell him I changed my mind? — Limbo Dear Limbo It’s hard to finally draw a line in the sand and stand by it, but you were strong enough to do it. Now, be strong enough to mean it. This man is a serial commitment-phobe. You will never have a serious relationship with him. It
Wise answers to perplexing questions
will always be like this until he marries someone else. Generally, commitment-phobics end up marrying with an eye on social and economic advancement, not amour. Trust your instincts and don’t let him use you when it suits his needs. Don’t worry. It’s not over. He’ll be texting before the week’s out. Men like that live for the chase. When he does reach out, tell him you are spending the weekend immersed in a self-awareness retreat. Head on over to the Brown Room. Sit back. Have a cocktail. Celebrate your good judgment
Dear Answer Lady I have a problem. A work colleague sent a Save the Date card some weeks ago. Other colleagues have received their actual invitations, but I have not. I need time to find a dress and to arrange for a reliable babysitter, but it seems awkward to ask, “Where’s my invitation?” — Standing out in the Cold Dear Standing Fortunately for you, the Answer Lady has friends in high society places and they tell her that you indeed should call the person issuing the invitation — usually the bride’s parents — and tactfully say, “If there has been a change, that’s fine, but I received a Save the Date and have not received an invitation.” It’s likely an oversight. Of course, if they have suddenly found that they had more invitees than money, it will be an AWKWARD moment, but they opened the door to that. To guide you on your path to social correctness, pop into Cape Atlantic Books and have them order you a copy of the social mores Bible, What Would Jackie Do? aka WWJD, as in the queen of style and poise, Jackie Onassis.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
E
ither superhero movies have become dark or I’ve become enlightened. When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait for Superman (1978) to hit theaters. Today, I’m going to need convincing before catching another superhero flick. Superman ushered in a new generation of superhero movies. It was very good, but its sequel, Superman II released in 1980, was my favorite, with three criminals of Krypton creating havoc in Metropolis. Soon after, Batman (1989) followed. Both franchises had a string of sequels that sometimes worked but mostly (and sadly) did not. Comic book buffs know Batman and Superman are DC Comic characters, while Spider-Man, Captain America, X-Men, and Iron Man are Marvel characters. It would be another decade before the Marvel Universe would find its way to the big screen with the first Spider-Man (2002) movie. Marvel have dominated the box office ever since. It would seem these characters need anger management classes as they’re turning on one another. Batman v Super-
Superheroes get dark... Batman v Superman man tells of the start of the Justice League (DC’s answer to Marvel’s Avengers “team of heroes” franchise). In the film, the two heroes have a rocky start. The film is getting poor reviews among critics while audiences seem to appreciate it. My daughter reports that she slept through most of it. This summer, Captain America and Iron Man get to slug it out in the film Civil War. One of my criticisms of more recent superhero films is that there are simply too
many characters — both heroes and villains — and Civil War appears to be adding even more. The Spider-Man franchise was overwhelmed by too many undeveloped characters. The exception was the second installment (2004) of the first series (you follow?). This sequel pits Spidey against Dr Octopus in one of the most engaging cinematic fight scenes ever — on the New York City subway. One film that seems to understand that staying with one villain and maybe only a few heroes is Deadpool (Marvel), released earlier this year. This film is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me as it was sometimes fun to watch. However, the title character (played by Ryan Reynolds) is completely raunchy. That makes this just another dark superhero flick… albeit somewhat differently (and by differently I mean more pornographic). Definitely not for kids. Send your comments about a superhero movie you’ve seen to capemayfilm@hotmail.com, and they may appear it right here in this column (warning: you may not see these flicks reviewed here otherwise)!

CHOWDER was found outside a local restaurant. He still gets freaked out when meeting new people. But years of being “shooed” and yelled at makes it a little hard for him to trust. One thing Chowder does love is food, especially canned wet food. Make an offer and just maybe he will be the cat you are looking for!
