Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

G

iven that we go to press on Tuesdays, I can’t write about the city council meeting happening a few hours from now, but I hope that common sense prevailed and the city did NOT offer a four-year contract to recently appointed police chief Tony Marino, given that his predecessor, Rob Sheehan, might become his successor in 2017 if he wins a lawsuit he brought against the city in the wake of his 2015 demotion from chief to captain. If that happened, and Sheehan got his job back, the city would have to pay Marino for the rest of his contract — or face another lawsuit. Either way, taxpayers lose. The fact that it was being discussed is a pity — what council would vote on such an important piece of business 11 days before a new mayor and council member take office (to be followed by a new city manager and attorney)? The answer is a council led by Mayor Ed Mahaney. Is this vote one final, vengeful act? Maybe — though, in writing this, I’m indulging in the yellow journalism referenced in the letter to the right. So, instead, I will hope that common sense prevails and say no more about it.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

³

It would be remiss of me not to remind you that the Exit Zero Burns Supper is on Saturday, January 28 at Carney’s. It will be the best one yet — bagpipes by the Irish Pipe Brigade plus performances by the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey and the energetic Pittsburghbased Bastard Bearded Irishmen. So many bastards in one night. Speaking of, there will be poetry recitals and a couple songs from me, too. Tickets are $35 and can be bought at ezstore.us or by calling 609-770-8479. Be there! Finally... Merry Christmas, friends and enermies!

I attended the Cape May council meeting that Jack Wright referenced in his Ramblings of December 8. I have a different view of what took place. I am convinced that anyone who has read Ramblings over the last few years will more than likely feel that Mr Wright has a strong dislike for Mayor Ed Mahaney, verging on hatred. He tried to make the reader think that the two resolutions approved by council were some kind of trickery, an attempt to put something over on the citizens of Cape May. What the council did was to indemnify city officials from lawsuit damages, which is a common practice. City Solicitor Tony Monzo explained the resolutions in detail at the meeting. He cited the years 2004 and 2008 when the same type of resolutions were passed to indemnify city officials. He even noted that council passed a resolution to indemnify Rob Sheehan when he was involved in a harassment lawsuit. None of this information appears in Mr Wright’s Ramblings. What does appear is an attempt once again by the editor of Exit Zero to try and discredit Mayor Mahaney by using his favorite weapon — yellow journalism. The term means using sensational methods to attract or influence readers. James E. Brady, 922 Benton Avenue, Cape May

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not one for New Year’s Resolutions, on the basis of (a) I have no wish to better myself; (b) I have so few faults that betterment would be nigh impossible; and (c) Just because. Also, the late and occasionally lamented Ma D’Catur was of the opinion that young men were entirely made up of sin, faults and wickedness and that only an energetic thrashing every morning would drive the badness out. Sort of a New Year’s Resolution every day. Also, I am not keen on tempting fate by saying anything so foolish as “well, here’s to next year! It can’t be any worse than the one just past, right?” In my long experience there is nothing awful enough that cruel fate cannot make it just a bit more terrible. So, the legendary D’Catur Mansion New Year’s Ball is an extravagant celebration of the moment and of joy, laughter, foolishness and mischief on the basis that tomorrow we might (as my gloomy Scotch Uncle Rab would say, to bring down the mood in any room all be “deid, buried and forgotten”. He would say this until he had had his tenth single malt, at

which point he would weep silent peaty tears and then slump to the floor with a dramatic cry of “ah’m a goner! Freedom!” We would put a tartan blanket over him where he lay, and it served nicely as a beanbag for the smaller children and pets). Of course there is a costume theme to the D’Catur Hogmanay Ball. Not the same as the D’Catur Halloween Ball, or the famed and currently banned D’Catur Valentine’s Ball. No, the theme for Hogmanay is excess! Except for excessive eating: I cannot bear chubs.

We lock the doors at 11.30pm and endeavor to party away the last 30 minutes of the year in forgettable style. Yes, forgettable: in my opinion, if one recalls anything except vividly improbable memories of a ball, one is simply not trying hard enough. If is a fine line, though: there is no point in being such a mess that one contributes nothing and recalls less: one might as well be Uncle Rab in that case. No, I mean that people should devote so much energy to having fun, that they essentially pass from one dying year to a newborn one so vividly that the new year recognizes them as something special and unique and endeavors to make them an integral part of its plans. Yes, I know, all that sounds vaguely like some new-age religion, where the coming year is given shape, form and personality, and very possibly little sacrifices once in a while. That is not, all in all, a bad idea, and really, as soon as I can think of a suitable name for this, I think I will make it official. We may even add moonbathing, which I have always liked. Except with slippers on: I detest bare feet.

F

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s all happening at the zoo!

eeling a little gloomy as winter sets in? Have the short days got you down? Shake off your sadness — get out into the wilds of Cape May with a winter trip to the Cape May County Zoo, one of the treasures of the area. The weak winter sunshine is at its peak as you stroll along the zoo’s pathways, catching a glimpse of animals who are tough enough, like you, to choose to be outdoors in December. Leave your phone off and in your pocket as you enjoy the noise of the woods and the animals. You can duck into the reptile house or the aviary if you get a little chilly. You’re bound to feel better when you’re done. Bring some kids along and earn points toward future nursing home visits. This is one of the best bang-for-your-buck activities with kids. First of all, it’s free — always a plus (though donations are welcomed). Second, you can let them be in charge of the itinerary, which they rarely get to do. Hand over the map — they can’t steer you wrong. Third, kids remember the zoo. Take a

third-grader to the zoo and she’ll learn that giraffes break their own umbilical cords when they fall five feet at birth. Years later, she’ll pull that fact out and impress her high school biology teacher. Fourth, the easiest lunch option — even in winter — is a picnic in the park. Since you can’t bring food into the zoo, kids come out starving, and tend not to notice that the hot chocolate has gone cool in the thermos, or that the sandwiches got a little soggy in the cooler, and they certainly don’t let the inevitable discussion of animals’ bodily functions kill their appe-

tites. Finally, taking kids to the zoo makes them better global citizens. They will care when they learn that giraffes are endangered, because they became friends with them at the zoo. Foster that concern with a holiday gift — for $35, your child can adopt an animal. You get a photo, fact sheet, official adoption certificate and the knowledge that you’re helping the giraffes — or lions, tigers, zebras, otters or pandas. For $50, you also get a stuffed version of the animal. Or, treat a 5-to-9-year-old to Holiday Zoo Camp — $100 buys you three hours of animal activities for four days. The zoo is open every day of the year except for Christmas. Winter hours are 10 to 3:30. Inclement weather may affect opening hours. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Have your chosen amount handy for the driver to give at the gate. Parking for cars is free. Leave your dog at home, and leave all food in the car. Bundle up, but bring sunglasses. The Movie Column

S

maller screens make for smaller experiences. Apparently there is a gizmo that allows you to watch movies currently in theaters on your television. It may work for some movies, but it kills others. Take this week’s mishmash review of two films: The Eagle Huntress and Disney’s new animated movie, Moana. Both films are best viewed projected... big... really big... on a movie theater screen (preferably with popcorn and friends). Besides that similarity, these two stories have many shared themes: we all have a mission, a purpose — something that we need to discover, something that we are sometimes blocked and challenged to figure out. But we must be persistent in the journey. The Eagle Huntress is a spectacular documentary about a girl, Aisholpan, who wants to be the first female eagle hunter in the village where her nomadic family currently lives. Our Disney heroine, Moana, also lives in a village on an island. She must venture offshore — past a great reef and into the sea — to meet

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

The Eagle Huntress is inspirational cinema her destiny. The frigid Mongolian landscape is featured gloriously in The Eagle Huntress. Aisholpan’s tale is inspirational. Her father is her strongest supporter among his eagle hunter peers (who spew venom at the thought of a female in their ranks). But she has a calling, an ability that can only be described as innate. Moana (whose character is voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) also has a calling, and since she was small it has always compelled her toward the sea. But her people live in fear of the vast body of water that sur-

rounds their island. That does not deter her. In fact, for the sake of our ancestors, for the sake of her family, for the sake of her village, she must embark. Her quest leads her to meet Maui, a demigod played by Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson. Some of the songs were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Broadway’s hit play, Hamilton. There’s one glaring difference between the two (well, besides the fact that one is animated and the other a live-action documentary): Aisholpan is a common girl who (like an eagle) rises to extraordinary heights whereas Moana is a chief’s daughter born into royalty. I have to ask Disney: Why the need for royal lineage? Why can’t our hero be an average person making heroic discoveries, finding this purpose, being on adventure? That’s why I love Aisholpan’s journey so much. She is from an average family, not among the elite. Still, both were fantastic films. Don’t miss one for the other — and for goodness sake see them on a big screen! If you love new great movie discoveries, buy my new book, Flix Your Missed — www.flixyoumissed.com.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I got my 12-year-old daughter an iPhone for Christmas. However, she used my iPad over the weekend and on her history I saw that she belongs to a Facebook writers’ group and had posted fiction containing material I consider inappropriate for a 12-year-old. Bad language, sexual scenarios. I removed her from all social media sites and all internet access. Should I return the phone? How do I control this? People were giving her advice on how to explore these themes. She doesn’t realize that these might be predators. I thought I knew what my daughter was up to, but I don’t and it scares me. — Petrified Mother Dear Petrified Give her the phone. Stigmatizing her will encourage even more surreptitious behavior.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

BUT you can pay companies to keep an eye on her activity. The Answer Lady suggests you do just that and tell her you are doing so. As to her writing ambitions — encourage her writing without criticizing the subject matter. Discourage her from putting it on the internet. Help her find some writing groups within her school or ask an English teacher to work with her. In the meantime, you both need to take a step back and relax. Why don’t the two of you visit Cape May Bird Observatory. Just looking out the win-

dow onto Lake Lily is an ‘uummm’ moment. Find some activities which will bond you and take you out into the fresh air. Dear Answer Lady We are hosting the family Christmas Eve dinner. We do the Italian seven fishes feast and each member of the family is responsible for a fish dish. My sister-in-law always seems to get by bringing a $4 fish dip from the Lobster House. It IS tasty, but come on. Others come out of the Lobster House with lobster tail and jumbo shrimp cocktail. Others prepare zuppa da pesce and grilled salmon. My husband tells me to shut up every time I threaten to say something. What do you think? — Something’s Fishy Dear Fishy Your husband is a wise man. It’s Christmas. Get your jabs in another time, at another family gathering. The Answer Lady would put a word in with her husband that they host a July 4 barbeque and provide the main entrée.You can bring the chips and onion dip. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

G

ulls. Most people simply take them for granted. Bird watchers fear them or, more accurately, are afraid someone may ask them to identify one down to the level of species. There are four common species of large “white-headed gull” in Cape May in winter: herring, ring-billed, great blackbacked and lesser black-backed. Despite their confusing array of plumages, identification is actually pretty easy. You can do it mostly by size. Ring-billed is the smallest; herring, mid-sized, is the most common. Lesser black-backed is slightly smaller than herring; great black-backed is larger, a Sumo. Winter beaches would look patently empty without gulls and the keening cry of herring gull always makes me feel ten degrees colder. Yes, we have gulls in Cape May year-round, but winter and gulls are synonymous. Seen any laughing gulls around lately? Bet you haven’t. Laughing gull, or the “summer gull,” as Witmer Stone called it, are long

gone. Laughing gulls spend the winter in Florida or along the Gulf Coast. “Smart gull,” you are thinking. I guess, but most of our winter gulls are here mostly for the food — winter-killed fish and stormstirred mollusks. If you look through the ranks, you cannot help but be impressed by the array of plumages. The all-dark brown ones are juvenile herring. While a few adult herring breed locally, most spend the summer months along the North Atlantic coast. In summer,

what we are left with are sub-adult birds — with traits somewhere between brown juveniles and silver-gray backed adults. Because of molt and wear these in-between age groups appear ratty and disheveled. Telling the age groups apart can be very challenging but also entertaining. Some birders really love field stripping gulls down to their feather edges. Most of us just scan through the ranks looking for the odd odd-ball, a glaucous or Iceland gull. These Arctic breeders occasionally winter this far south and are most easily distinguished by their overall buffy (juvenile) or all-white plumage (second year). Adult glaucous and Iceland gulls are rare this far south, though there is second winter Iceland hanging around South Cape May Meadows. It looks mostly like a juvenile but has a darktipped bill and some icy gray feathers. As far as field guide treatments go, the second edition Sibley Guide to Birds is simple, concise, lucid and very utilitarian. I highly recommend it for those who are confronting the gull challenge for the first time.

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MUFFIN came in with her friend Bagels but she got adopted. How can you have a bagel without a muffin? Maybe it’s because she tends to get spooked when meeting new people. All Muffin needs is time to get comfortable and she will show you how much of a sweetheart she really is. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up to a muffin Christmas morning?

YSOBEL has a unique calico coat and is one of six! There is nothing ordinary about this little lady. Not her looks, not her name and not her hugs. Ysobel loves being brushed and held. She also loves to show off her hunting skills with the jingly thing attached to a stick. Adopt Ysobel today and jingle all the way home!

SHAUNA is a shy little lady who was one of many from a hoarder house. She was constantly getting lost in the crowd. Shauna has never had a home or someone to care for her in her entire life. Now she has a clean bed, toys and gets fed regularly. But she is patiently waiting for the next step, a home. Give love this Christmas and adopt today!
