Ramblings From The Editor

J

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ust like the boogeyman in all those bad horror movies, Ed Mahaney — just when you thought his mayoral reign was dead — still had one more nasty blow to aim at taxpayers. I’m talking about the vote last Tuesday that ended up with Tony Marino winning a four-year contract as Cape May’s Chief of Police. The fact that an outgoing mayor put such an important vote on the table 10 days before a new mayor was to be sworn in — and 10 days before the City Manager and City Attorney, who were equally compliant in the demotion of the previous police chief, were due to quit — is an insult to taxpayers and an affront to local democracy. Let’s also not forget that Marino has been in the job less than four months after being promoted from the rank of sergeant (he’d never spent one day as either a captain or a lieutenant), yet he got a four-year contract, despite the fact that his predecessor Rob Sheehan was given a one-year probationary contract, even though he had been promoted from the rank of lieutenant. Yes, folks, the whole affair stinks. I’m so disappointed that council members

Speaking of things that stink, if there are still people out there threatening council member Terri Swain then they need to look in the mirror and grow the hell up — either that or the police should be told if there were actual threats to her, as opposed to threats of boycotting Swain’s Hardware, which is a Cape May gem. Staying with Swain’s, but on a much lighter note, I would like to wish a happy retirement to legend Russell O’Neill. Friday marks his last day at Swain’s after nearly 40 years. He will be working until 1pm that day if you would like to wish him all the best. Russell, it just won’t be the same without you. This is our last issue until February 9. That means one more reminder that the Exit Zero Burns Supper is on Saturday, January 28 at Carney’s. Bagpipes by the Irish Pipe Brigade plus performances by the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey and the Pittsburgh-based Bastard Bearded Irishmen mean this will be the best one ever. I mean it! Tickets are $35 and can be bought at ezstore.us or by calling 609-770-8479. Until then, a very Happy New Year!

³ Bea Pessagno and Roger Furlin voted for the contract. At the very least, they could have abstained and allowed a new council to take the time to consider this. What was the rush? Now, we have a police chief firmly in place, with a decent chance that his predecessor, Sheehan, could still get his old job back if he wins a lawsuit against the city. The result then would either be a very expensive payoff for Marino, or the threat of yet another lawsuit, this time from him. What a mess. And so unnecessary.

The Activity Column

A

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a special dinner at Congress Hall

s you’re contemplating auld lang syne, cast your mind back to days really old lang syne. Flip your mental calendar back to 1816, when a new Cape May hotel called Congress Hall welcomed its first guests. America was not yet 60, and Robert Burns’ poem, based on a traditional folk song, was not yet 30. It would be 113 years before Gaetano “Guy” Lombardo and his family band, the Royal Canadians, played “Auld Lang Syne” at midnight at a New Year’s Eve party at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. But the sentiment — remembering things past as the old year ends — was universal. Lombardo, son of Italian immigrants to Canada, likely learned the song from Scottish immigrants in his home town of London, Ontario. Like any person with a shred of emotion, Lombardo recognized in Auld Lang Syne that bittersweet mixture of love and longing for things past, present and future, and the importance of shaking hands with an old friend. Lombardo’s sweeping big band arrangement became a New Year’s Eve tradi-

tion, and an annual invitation to think about the past. Congress Hall has seen a lot of the past. The hotel has seen its fortunes rise and fall. It has been Tommy’s Folly and a summer White House, hosting Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Benjamin Harrison and Ulysses S. Grant. Congress Hall has seen fire and rain — it survived the Great Storm of 1821, but the Great Fire of 1878 destroyed its early incarnation. It survived Prohibition and the Great Depression, and thrived with John Philip Sousa and his Marine Corps

Band. The Cape May Bible Conference kept it plugging along, and its latest renovation brought it into the new millennium. Now, the grand old lady of Cape May is celebrating her 200th birthday, and you’re invited to the party. Congress Hall is giving you a chance to learn about 1816 on December 28 and 29, with Bicentennial Birthday Dinners in the Ballroom. These dinners were originally presented this summer, and they were so popular that they are back, with a holiday spin on the sing-a-long, dance-a-long, fun. Led by “Annie Knight,” who owned Congress Hall from 1904 to 1931 and Curtis Bashaw, who owns it now, the Bicentennial Dinners blend historical food and modern fare with history and visits from some of Congress Hall’s most famous guests. You may have a chance to learn about Annie’s determination to add indoor plumbing, or her quarrels with the city council. If you don’t already know the lyrics to “On the Way to Cape May,” you’ll learn them. Dinner begins at 6:00 and costs $65 per adult and $25 for children ages 5 to 12. Reservations are required — call 609-884-6574.

The Movie Column

I

s the order of the universe that everything should come in threes? Three major plot points make for a good story. Bronze, silver and gold. Gold, frankincense and myrrh. Mind, body, and spirit. All that to say: saw three movies this past week and here are the reviews! Loving is a film about an interracial couple in the 1950s who created a lot of controversy by doing one thing: loving each other. Radical, huh? This couple convinced the US Supreme Court to rule in favor of interracial marriage, which was outlawed in many states. There is Oscar buzz, especially over Ruth Negga, who plays wife Mildred Loving. She is outstanding. Admittedly the film was sluggish with portions portraying the couple’s average life as a backdrop to the more conflicted side of their story. Still, it is an important and notable movie telling of remarkable courage against a ludicrous anger rooted in baseless fear. Next up is Arrival. Even if you’re not into sci-fi, and I’m not a big fan, don’t dismiss this film about alien structures mysteriously appearing across our little globe. Like more

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in La La Land exceptional sci-fi, this film focuses on our human condition and what makes us universal beings. Amy Adams plays linguist professor Louise Banks, who is brought in by the army to communicate with the aliens. What she discovers stretches our understanding of communication, relationships, and even the core elements of the space-time continuum. Deep stuff, eh? Somehow, the film stops short of being too... well... out there. Sure, you may be scratching your head at the end but the film sticks with you because of its substance and style.

La La Land is a brilliant musical for this generation. Visually stunning with wonderful music, it’s an engaging film about a young couple (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone) dancing across the stars. You do more than simply follow their story, you join in their journey. You smile as they discover each other and become upset when they start to fight. Yep, it’s not Rogers and Hammerstein — in fact, it’s more convincing because of its relevance. Threes. Like the three Fs! Family, friends, and flix! Your holiday mission: as you spend time with loved ones, watch an extraordinary movie...together. It will make your season brighter! PS: Thanks to reader Joan S who wrote that she would love to see some of the movies in this column played here in town. Joan, I couldn’t agree more. I wish I could do more to show these films. As members of the allvolunteer Cape May Film Society, let’s work on that together! Email me at flixyoumissed@ gmail.com with your thoughts! Happy New Year y’all! The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady It’s another New Year’s Eve in which I have to find something to do and someone to do it with, or feel like a loser. I was in a relationship and thought for once in my life I won’t be alone December 31, but we didn’t make it through Thanksgiving. There is a woman in the office that I have been chatty with. Would it be too glaringly loserish to ask her out on a first date New Year’s Eve? — Alone at the Holidays Dear Alone Actually, the Answer Lady thinks it might be fun to go out with a quasi-stranger on New Year’s Eve. There will be no expectations. You obviously like each other well enough so it wouldn’t be blind datish. But please be positive when asking. As in, “Hey, I

Wise answers to perplexing questions

don’t have a date New Year’s and I was wondering if you had plans? I thought it would be fun to go to dinner at Hemingway’s and then dancing at Cabanans.” As opposed to the sad sod approach, “I don’t have a date and you look like you don’t either so why don’t we be miserable together?” Remember, the point is to just have fun because you have to see her Tuesday morning, assuming you have Monday off. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I want to celebrate the New Year but hate crowds. We’ve done all that over

the years. We’ve gone to parties and given parties. We’ve gone to the Glitter Ball and danced the night away at the bars along Beach Avenue. This year I want to do something a little special as it has been a rough year, health wise, for us. We’d like to celebrate our good fortune quietly. What do you suggest? – Ringing Quietly this Year Dear Ringing Dinner and a show has always been one of the Answer Lady’s favorite things to do on New Year’s Eve. You’re in luck. You can catch Cape May Stage’s terrific production of One Christmas Carol at 7:30, December 31. That will allow you just enough time to get to get to your restaurant of choice in time for the last seating. You’ll be finishing dessert just as the champagne corks are popping. For quietly elegant, you can’t beat the Ebbitt Room or Peter Shields. Sapore Italiano and the Merion Inn are also very intimate. Enjoy the midnight bubbly at the restaurant, then walk down to the beach and ring in the New Year under the stars. Now THAT’S an unforgettable New Year’s celebration.

Bird Droppings

P

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

eople often wonder how birds survive in bitterly cold weather. The truth is some do not. Those that spend the winter in colder regions do have adaptations that give them a survival edge. Beneath their waterproof outer layer of feathers is fluffy, insulating down. Not goose down unless, of course, you are a goose, but the same air-trapping configured feathers that outdoor garment manufacturers covet and wrap in Gortex is found on all birds. Birds are also smart about utilizing habitat — if it’s windy, they stand in the lee side of some obstacle. When it’s sunny, they stand in the sun. If you drive Route 55, whose north and southbound lanes are separated by vegetation, you’ll see mockingbirds perched on the sunny side of trees. Before nightfall all birds seek shelter in some isolated and insulating environment. Around our town, robins and blackbirds disappear into stands of fox tail or plume grass before sunset. Ducks that sleep on open water bunch up, sharing body warmth and keeping the water from freezing.

Of course, the real trick to survival is food. When food runs out, birds relocate or die. On December 15, a bitterly cold and blustery day, I watched 300 snow geese migrate over our house. I suspect they had tried to winter farther north, lured by some bounty of unharvested soy beans, perhaps. The stocks ran out or were covered by snow and the birds had to relocate. When natural stocks of seeds and berries are running low is precisely when feeding birds in your yard has real meaning. Not all species can be encouraged to vacate their berry-

laden thickets, but jays, chickadees, titmice and sparrows (including cardinals) are easily attracted to yards that also offer trees and shrubs for perching and protection. Put up a few blocks of suet for woodpeckers and you have the foundation of a feeding station. Also attesting to the bird attracting power of suet cakes are the four Baltimore orioles gracing the yard of local bird photographer Kevin Karlson. Most orioles retreat into the tropics in winter but these four have elected to save themselves the dangerous cross-Gulf journey, proving that it is food more than ambient temperatures that determine whether birds survive. Talk to the folks at Northwood Center 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point about suet cakes and tips for feeding birds. There just may be some hardy Baltimore oriole hanging out in your neighborhood waiting for an excuse to brighten your yard with a bit of color and cheer. If not, the woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees are sure to thank you with their presence and appetite. Food, it’s how birds beat winter.

Gatsby has already learned lots of new and useful behaviors that will make him the most mannerly boy when he finds a new home. When you come to the shelter, ask for Gatsby. He will be eagerly waiting for your arrival.

SADIE is an American staffordshire terrier mix who is shy at first, but once she gets to know you is quite the social butterfly! In her last home Sadie lived with a cat and they got along swimmingly, so no need to worry about owning other pets. Don’t let this adorable face pass you by! Adopt Sadie today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

PANTHER lived in a home for three and a half years but had some issues with the other cats living in the house. But don’t get the wrong idea, Panther woud make the perfect pet if he were the only animal living in the house. That way he gets all the love and attention! Let Panther run free again and adopt today!

DAISY is kinda like the cranky old lady you see in the comic strips. But who wouldn’t be cranky stuck in the shelter at 14 years old! She’d love a quiet home, maybe someone that will take her for walks in the garden. She loves the sunshine and laying around. Give this old lady a nice home to spend her golden years and adopt today!

LUCAS is quite the shy guy. Maybe it’s because the stigma that comes along with being a black cat. But bad luck he is not! Lucas wants nothing more then to make a friend and live in a cozy home. Come to the shelter today and meet your new best friend! Lucas will be patiently waiting for you.
