Thank You Recently, I was challenged with a fight for my life. Congestive heart failure led to multiple complications which created a life-threatening situation and almost a three-month hospital stay. On October 4, 2015 this town that we call home got together on my behalf. I can’t begin to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all who participated and were involved. The kind words, thoughts and prayers, boosts of encouragement and participation of the community fueled my will to survive. The never-ending doubt and support of my wife and family was reinforced by this community. The donations, contributions and overall outcome of the benefit I found humbling and overwhelming. For the circle of friendship and the power of prayer demonstrated by our “home by the seaM” my gratitude is unending. Special thanks to Lisa McGraw and all the girls, Jim, John, Sheri and Joe as well as the entire staff of the Bayshore, all of the businesses listed and those I may have missed. Thank You.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, taking the polar bear plunge!
ou’d get annoyed if someone called you a tool, and insulted if you were called a sponge, but take it as a compliment if someone calls you a plunger. At the Polar Bear and Puppy Plunge, plungers are VIPs. All plungers deserve this kind of respect. The toilet plunger is useful. It’s elegant in its simplicity. Its purpose is suggested by its form — you see it in the powder room, and you understand what it’s for — unless you’re a trumpeter. Since it was patented by John S. Hawley in 1875, the plunger hasn’t needed improvement. Your role as a plunger is simple, too — you ask a few friends to help you support a good cause, then you and your dog dress up in costume and go jump in a lake. Charities have been using cold water to spark donations for decades, and before that, people dunked themselves for free. Since 1903, members of Coney Island’s Polar Bear Club swam in the winter ocean to promote “virility and immunity.” Scandinavians describe a feeling of euphoria after a dash from a hot sauna to a frigid lake. That
happy feeling may convince you you’re doing something good for your body, but there is no scientific evidence that swimming in icy water is good for you. For healthy people, the “cold shock” will wear off after a few minutes. Unhealthy people should stick to shore. Jumping into a lake in April is smarter than jumping in January, but experts say you should prep by standing under a cold shower for a few minutes daily, for three to five days before the plunge. Stroll into the water instead of diving. Encourage your leashed
dog to join you by tossing a ball, but don’t be surprised if he sticks to shore. When you’re done, ease your way out and wrap yourself in a dry towel or your superhero cape. Dodge the dogs as they shake to dry themselves. Avoid alcohol until after you start to warm up. The 17th Annual Polar Bear and Fourth Annual Puppy Plunge will benefit the Cape May County Animal Shelter. All plungers with sponsors will receive a free tee shirt and hot chocolate, and all dogs get a treat. There are prizes for the pup who raises the most money, crazy costumes, an afternoon bonfire, music and games. The Plunge is held at the Beachcomber Camping Resort on April 16, from 11am to 1pm. Plunge into the lake at noon. Leashed pups will splash along the shoreline, going in as far as they wish. Costumes for plungers and pups are strongly encouraged - hence the prizes. Register by April 13th and your fee is $10; registration on or after April 13th is $15 per entry. For information, call 609-886-6035 or visit beachcombercamp.com. Next week: To the Moon

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
despise mobile telephones. Oh, they can, I am told, be just the very thing when one’s automobile tips over in the dark and one ends upside down in a ditch, unharmed but in need of assistance. But really, all they do is bring the great unwashed masses far too close for comfort. I had one, once: one of the inumerable D’Catur fry gave me one in a bid to curry favor and hoping I might, in my dotage, tell him where I buried Captain Kidd’s treasure. Well, I smiled and ruffled his hair and pinched his cheeks (he was, I think 45 years old, and so detested this treatment but had to look pleased, even when tears ran down his face from my vicelike pinching) and then as soon as he headed home, used the devilish “aye” phone as he called it, to telephone my old Korean War buddy in the FBI and ask him to send a snatch team to move my grand/great-grand/something nephew to Gitmo to make him less sly. Actually, I think I was meant to call when I wanted him set free. Let me see now, that was 2010. How time flies! Anyway, back to me, as Ma D’Catur used to hiss, whenever the
conversation threatened to be less about her and more about someone else. I carried the telephone for a few days, thinking it might be useful if Young Albert and I stepped in some quicksand on the beach, or needed to call in an airstrike should we spot any illegal Wildwooders, but really, all that happened was a succession of calls from a young man who repeatedly insisted he should install solar panels on the D’Catur Mansion, and seemed not to understand that our basement nuclear reactor supplies our power needs. In time, another damnable Young D’Catur informed me of The Facebook on
my phone, and my GOD I have never before descended into a vile cesspool of Hell so quickly (other than that time my dirigible landed in Philly by accident). It seems that everyone on Earth has lost their minds, and spends all day photographing their misshappen feet in a variety of mundane settings, their badly prepared meals, their feral children with food/excrement smeared on themselves in comedic fashion, and dogs and cats with hilariously “human” traits doing all manner of excruciatingly boring things. “Greatgreatgreat Grandad,” the spotty D’Catur descendant shrieked, “your life is SO interesting! You need to share it!” I looked around the Mansion thoughtfully, took in the stuffed Yeti, the Faberge Eggs, the Perpetual Motion machine and the Ark of the Covenant, and said with a tiny smile: “You know, young nameless hanger-on, you might be right!” And then I set Young Albert on him, and laughed myself senseless as the screams grew distant and higher. I did “video-record” the incident, and wish only there was some network to share such things. Ah, well.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
n the next few weeks, millions of birds will be leaving winter territories in the tropics and returning to North America. Many of these species are insectivorous, accounting for their absence during the insect impoverished winter months. What is remarkable are the number of specialized techniques insect-eating birds apply to their task. Some species, like the vireos, are gleaners, hopping amid the foliage, prying caterpillars off the undersides of leaves. Others like the swallows are akin to vacuum cleaners on wings. Flycatchers typically sight prey from a perch then sally out and snap it up before returning to their perch. Other birds, like thrashers, forage amid the leaf litter, flipping leaves and securing hidden prey. Woodpeckers, of course, have one of the most specialized techniques, although some woodpeckers are flycatchers. Shorebird species sometimes have an insect focus. Some sandpipers have a par-
ticular interest in mosquito larvae — a dietary interest that pays big dividends in the mosquito-rich Arctic. One species known as red-necked phalarope has developed a technique that involves spinning. Thus agitated, the spinning water column ferries larvae to the surface where the bird picks them off. Clever. Then there’s our own laughing gull, which specializes in snapping adult greenheads out of the air. With so many insect-eating birds
around, you’d think insects wouldn’t stand a chance. But the cold ecological fact is that predators cannot outstrip their prey base. The greenheads and ants will do just fine. All the birds do is keep their numbers in check until it’s time for insect eating birds to go back to the tropics. You’re right, I didn’t mention spiders. Spiders are not insects, but there are birds that target spiders, too. One of them is the house wren that lives in your yard and will be back in a week or two. Sometimes, spiders gain the upper hand. The large black and yellow garden spider weaves a web large and strong enough to catch some small songbirds. I once rescued a black-and-white warbler so ensnared at Cape May Point State Park. The warbler was caught by a single strand of web that encircled one outer primary. Warblers are too big for this species of spider to deal with so the arachnid, too was just as pleased to have the bird set free. The only loser was the sharp-shinned hawk that would have seen the struggling warbler and come in for an easy meal.

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this woman for a year and most of the time we get along quite well, but every once in a while, she goes off the rails about nothing. I was supposed to pick her up from work last night but was delayed and arrived 10 minutes late. She stormed off before I got there and started walking home. Home is 10 miles away. I spent two hours looking for her. When I finally found her and asked her why she didn’t wait for me, she said, “If you loved me, you’d have been on time.” What do I do with that? — Drama Rama Dear Drama You explain to your girlfriend that sometimes things happen and being late one time does not necessarily equate to “I don’t love you anymore.” On the other hand, you are enabling

such erratic behavior. Driving around for two hours is silly. Cellphones are useful tools and so are cabs. Maybe these inane dramas can be discussed over a romantic dinner at The Ebbitt Room and if that doesn’t work, it’s time for couples’ therapy. If that doesn’t work — next time keep driving. Dear Answer Lady I married my high school sweetheart two years ago even though I was being transferred to Cape May and my wife still had two years left of college. The long-distance relationship
worked well for a while, but then she kept finding excuses not to come to Cape May. At first she said I wasn’t Christian enough — her father is a minister. So I became more Christian. But then, through a mutual friend, I found out she was dating someone. Now we see each other when we can and when we do, we act like a married couple. Should I press the fidelity issue? Right now, it seems that a part-time wife is better than no wife. Am I an idiot? — Monogamy Challenged Dear Challenged What are you getting out of this relationship? Marriage counseling is certainly in order and you should be living in the same state, if the relationship is to endure. But consider this — maybe you were both too young. Maybe distance does not always make the heart grow fonder. Maybe you should have enough faith in yourself to know that you will find a partner who is willing to share your life fully committed. In the meantime, head down to Carney’s with your buddies Saturday night. Have fun. Remember, life with just one foot in the water is really no life at all.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
W
ho doesn’t love Sally Field? Let’s start with memories of The Flying Nun and Gidget. Sure, they were televisions shows that I was only able to catch in reruns, but it was enough for this remarkable actor to make an impression with me. She stayed on TV primarily in the 1960s into the 1970s, and migrated to the movies in (not surprisingly) silly comedies like Smokey and the Bandit and The End (1977 and 1978, respectively). When I was a kid, I went to see those movies — and I enjoyed them (again, as a kid; sure they’re a little dated now). In short time, she made a dramatic upgrade in her screen appeal by winning a Best Actress Oscar for the leading role in Norma Rae (1978). Shortly after that, she won another Best Actress Oscar for her work in Places in the Heart (1984). From there, she worked on the big screen primarily, but in the 1990s began weaving somewhat effortlessly between both big and little screens. There were more award nominations for her work. She was in Mrs Doubtfire (1993), Forrest
Sally Field sparkles in Hello, My Name Is Doris Gump (1994), Lincoln and even The Amazing SpiderMan (both released 2012). In her latest movie, Hello, My Name Is Doris, Sally Field proves she can still carry a film in the lead role. And she delivers on laughs as well. I was so glad to have caught this film in a crowded theater that was enjoying her performance — thoroughly. The laughs were out loud, and Sally is completely endearing. Doris is an office worker who is smitten with a new colleague (Max
Greenfield) who is half her age. She does whatever it takes to befriend him and spend more time with him. The film somehow avoids making Doris look too crazy for her pursuit of a younger man. I’m in support of that pursuit. I just re-watched classics Casablana (1942) and Sabrina (1954) where a much, much (much) older Bogart is chasing women half his age (namely, Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn, respectively) — and nobody even seems to bat an eye! It’s distracting and (hate to say it) a little creepy! So why not let Sally catch her hunk-o-man? Sally is brilliant in this film, which is getting high praise from critics and audiences alike (the former I picked up off Rotten Tomatoes, the latter from the audience I joined at the screening). Thankfully, the story never goes anywhere too strange or offensive (or creepy). They treat their subject matter, who happens to be one of my favorite actors, with a whole lot of respect. A big win for Sally, and a big win for all of us. Go Sally!

MANDY has been waiting patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to her forever home. She is a 10-year-old orange and white coated sweetie pie that craves affectons and snuggles. Although Mandy is 10, she is as active as a kitten. She also qualifies for “Senior for Seniors” program. If you are over 62 our adoption fee is waived!
PIXIE is a gray and black striped lady with patches of white and brown on her coat and a raccoon-like tail. Since she was brought to the shelter, Pixie has seemed lost. She would love to be back in a warm and cozy home with a quiet setting to call her own. Give Pixie a second chance at happiness. Come in and adopt today!

JACOB AND RANGER, (Jacob not shown), came into the shelter together after a tough life of living outside. Both with black and white “tuxedo” coats, these cats are like two peas in a pod! These two deserve a home to see what the glamorous indoor life is like. Since all they’ve know is eachother, a double adoption would be ideal.
