Subscriber Of The Week

Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark — though, naturally, we are going to be pretty sneaky about it. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck.

How long have you been coming to Cape May? Fifteen years. Who are you normally with? My wife and dog. Favorite thing about Cape May? It’s dog friendly, the business people are warm, welcoming and do not gouge the visitors. It’s also very quaint and safe. Even the visitors become warm and friendly there in Cape May. The other shore towns don’t even come close. Least favorite thing? We don’t ever stay over in mid-season because the crowds are overwhelming. Favorite restaurants? The Lobster House, Aleathea’s, Harpoon Henry’s, The Nail, Zoe’s. The dog is family. If she can’t go somewhere, we don’t go. Favorite places to stay? Victorian Lace. Andy and Carrie make us feel like we are visiting family. If you could change one thing about Cape May what would it be? I would like to see more dog-friendly places and/or dog-friendly hours (a section of beach, the mall, the promenade). A very controversial subject on FB, though. Dog owners do understand the other side of the issue. Other thoughts? Your magazine takes me there when I can’t go, so does Facebook. Some people call it “magic town.” And it is. Something does happen when we cross the bridge. Even my wife loves it... and she hates the shore.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

bag. gy. wrin. kle A soft covering for cables (or any other obstructions) that prevents sail chafing from occurring.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a a page turner... A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. Published after author John Kennedy Toole’s 1969 death, it is the tragi-comic tale of Ignatius J. Reilly, “a mad Oliver Hardy, a fat Don Quixote, a perverse Thomas Aquinas rolled into one, who should repel the reader with his thunderous contempt against everybody – Freud, homosexuals, heterosexuals, Protestants and the assorted excesses of modern times”. Read it!

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

L

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ike a lot of good things in life which are taken for granted, I reckon the presence of the United States Coast Guard is something that doesn’t over-exercise our brains. And that isn’t a surprise given we don’t hear of their work on a daily basis. I have, though, been thinking about them quite a bit recently, for two reasons. The first is that whenever I pick up lunch at Big Wave Burrito (obsessed with their fish burrito bowl) or enjoy a rare treat of hazelnut coffee at Wawa (it has to be rare because coffee wreaks havoc upon my acid reflux-afflicted stomach) I often see Coast Guard personnel and am reminded of how important they are to harbor district businesses. The second reason is that their public affairs people have been busy sending out releases depicting dramatic sea rescues. This past Saturday, the Coast Guard rescued a 52-year-old man from a sinking 32-foot sailboat 140 miles off the coast of Wilmington. A Hercules aircraft and a Jayhawk helicopter were launched from Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the man was hoisted to safety. Stranded alone on a boat 140 miles off-

personnel from TRACEN, the only Coast Guard training base in the country, send kids to our local schools and help keep our businesses open year-round. Coasties, we salute you! For those readers who used to love poring over every ad on every page, searching for a hidden piece of clipart, good news! The Exit Zero Clipart Contest is back. Each week we are hiding, in one of the ads, a little illustration that’s linked to the theme of the issue. For example, the theme this week is presidents (in honor of Presidents Day). You can enter in one of two ways: 1. Send an email (write CLIPART CONTEST in the subject line) with the name of the ad that contains the clipart, including your name, address and telephone number; 2. Do it the old-fashioned way and mail your entry to Exit Zero Clipart Contest, 109 Sunset Boulevard, Cape May, NJ 08204. Include your name and address. We need to have your entries by February 24. One winner picked at random will receive a $20 Exit Zero Cookhouse gift certificate. The winner’s name will be posted on our Facebook page each Friday. Happy hunting!

shore... that’s one super-scary moment. Amazing that all of this expensive modern technology and brave, highly trained crew members were available to save him from a certain lonely death. It helped that the boater was smart enough to be equipped with a satellite GPS messenger. But even still, how comforting to know that for those who take to the waves for either commercial or recreational purposes, the Coast Guard has their back. And how comforting for us to know that

Dish Of The Week George Washington loved a lot of things. He was a voracious reader, boasting a library of 1200 books. He loved dogs, importing French hounds to breed with the Virginia variety, which is how we got the American foxhound. And when it came to dinner, the country’s first president loved a plate of duck. We can’t be sure what his favorite fixins were, but there is one anecdote from just after he retired from office. Washington met some friends for dinner at the City Hotel, near his plantation in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The owner mentioned that he had a good supply of canvas-back ducks in the larder, which led Washington to reply, “Very good sir… give us some of them, with a chafing dish, some hommony and a bottle of good Madeira, and we shall not complain.” Given that it’s Presidents Week, we felt it appropriate to highlight the EspressoRubbed Hudson Valley Duck Breast at the Washington Inn — Washington, get it? It’s served with shiitake-brioche bread pudding, foie gras cream sauce, spinach and blackberry demi. So head down Washington Street and prepare to feast like a president.

BEER OF THE WEEK The Topsail Style: Sour Blonde Ale ABV: 9.9% Cape May Brewing Co. The fourth entry in Cape May Brewing Company’s ever-evolving and adventurous Barrel Aged series. Aged for nine months with exotic fruit flavors reminiscent of peaches, mangoes and apricots. The Topsail is a well-rounded sour beer that will continue to develop in the bottle as it continues to evolve.

Open for DINNER Thursday through Monday

WINE OF THE WEEK Astrid 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon $13.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard Nose of red berries, cherry and plum, with essence of leather and vanilla. Sweet oak flavors seduce the palate while bright fruit shows through. Smooth entry with elegant tannins. The wine is supple and rich. Very approachable. Drinks well with barbecue, duck and lamb. Cheers!

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere! HALF PRICE WINE BY THE BOTTLE ALL DAY FRIDAY!

Cocktail Of The Week Congress Hall hosted four presidents in its 19th century glory days (not that we’re saying these days aren’t too bad either at the Big House, as it was known in its earliest years). Presidents Franklin, Buchanan, Grant and Harrison all hung their hats at the hotel. Last year, in honor of the hotel’s bicentennial celebrations, The Brown Room (Congress Hall’s elegant bar) began offering a cocktail list inspired by those four presidents. They were so popular that they stayed on the menu. This week we are highlighting a cheeky little number called Drunken Theatrics, inspired by Franklin Pierce. To tell the truth, Pierce wasn’t such a happy drinker – he hit the bottle a little more than was prudent and eventually died of cirrhosis of the liver. But hey-ho, let’s celebrate his memory anyway! The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am done with presidents. Mind you, I said the same after that regrettable incident with Cape May’s President Slava, which came about when we let everyone have a vote and only those go-getting young Eastern Europeans who come here in summer to assist us in separating Shoebies from their dollars turned out. We were lucky, though: President Slava may have had all the making of a dictator, but his English was just off enough that we accepted that unknowingly accepting an actual peach when handed that fruit was officially a removal from office. Not that we did so well with a monarchy, though: Mad King Bob was a total horror, and only that choking incident with a stack of pancakes avoided the need for a bloody revolution. I have some minor patience for the English Queen, Elizabeth the second: she used to vacation here with that boorish but amusing husband, Phil the Greek, and they used to be the life and soul of the Admiral Hotel on Friday nights. Now I come to think of it, our attempts

at a stable democracy have been a little less than stellar: Cape May folks are leery of putting their names to anything in an official capacity, but when they do, they tend to keep on signing, and so out turnouts in free and fair elections are either less than five per cent, or in excess of 450 percent. And don’t get me started on some of the mayors to have floated to the top. No, I think that we are actually best suited to being managed by an Artificial Intelligence, one that will sound a little like a young Lee Majors and use a mixture of logic,

wisdom and brutal faceless robot enforcers to keep us on an even course.By coincidence I have a very fine prototype of such an AI in the basement right now, humming away malevolently and plotting domination. It is actually the Mark II, Mark I having come unstuck as it prepared to assume control of our vehicles, satellites and traffic signals when Young Albert wandered down to the basement and peed on the power socket. Of course, some genius will have to program this impartial mechanical diety, and I suppose, if you twist my arm, I will agree to perform such a humbling task for a few years, just until everything is running smoothly. Also, someone has to be on hand to finish the thunderbolt machine that will allow the AI to rule like the gods of old: right now, by running a cable from the outlet on the top floor, we have managed to get thunderbolts that can strike anywhere in town from the top of The D’Catur Mansion, with the force of the static shock one gets from going down a kids’ plastic slide with polyester pants on, This is impressive, but not godlike.

The Exit Zero Interview Tracie Cicchitti talks tourism, parking and whales

Spreading the word... chamber president Tracie Cicchitti. Aleksey Moryakov

T

his week, the theme of the issue is presidents, which is why we chatted to Tracie Cicchitti, who heads up the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May. We wanted to know about the success of summers past, those yet to come, what we can do to solve the parking problem... and how many whales we might get to see this coming year. Tracie, last summer seemed to be a strange one for a lot of restaurants and retailers. Was that the feedback you got, too? Weather was an issue — not only the heat in August and to some extent in July, but 21 days of rain in May and June as well. We heard that August was soft for restaurants and retailers because visitors were staying cool on the beach. Do you think the presidential election affected the season? There was an underlying air of uncertainty and that makes people less likely to spend. I also think the weak Canadian dollar contributed. Beyond that, I think we need to realize that the vacation trend is changing from a week to three or four days, and those businesses that are willing to customize and be more flexible will grab a larger share of the market. How are the early signs for this summer? We are hearing that peak season bookings are up. Cape May has been getting more coverage than it’s ever had from the national press. Is there a danger of complacency? Yes, but we have young leaders in this community who are bringing fresh, creative energy while keeping the Cape May charm intact. We have world-class restaurants, unique shops, five-star accommodations, vineyards, microbreweries, local artists and eco-tourism. What’s not to like? What would you say is the number one complaint Cape May faces? The top three: parking, dog-friendly topics, handicap accessibility. How can we improve the visitor experience? We want to create an open forum with residents, non-profits, business, civic organiza-

tions and city government yearly to evaluate and recommend enhancements in order to improve the visitor experience. The issue of beach replenishment and beach safety is a tricky one. It’s important to inform the visitors of the risks without causing undue alarm. What’s the chamber’s position? We support the newly formed Beach Safety Committee under the direction of Mayor Lear and will follow their lead. Do you think the harbor district is an overlooked amenity? For so many visitors, their only experience is going to Lucky Bones or the Lobster House, without realizing how important the harbor is to life in this town. The harbor area is definitely overlooked. Full disclosure — we do have our business at Schellenger’s Landing. The chamber is working on having a satellite Welcome Center there from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Ernie and Charlie Utsch have graciously offered us several options for space. We met with Mayor Lear and Deputy Mayor Meier discussing different options for transporting people to that area. The area is another layer to Cape May that we should develop for our visitors to explore. Should we build a parking garage? We believe a study should be conducted to see the best location and to determine if our landmark status would be affected.

“The harbor area is definitely overlooked. The chamber is working on having a satellite Welcome Center there from Memorial Day through Labor Day. It’s another layer for our visitors to explore.” — TRACIE CICCHITTI, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE If the chamber had its way, are there any changes it would make regarding parking enforcement and meters? We get so many letters complaining about the meters and letters with parking tickets asking us to pay for them. It’s unreal. When we did the candidates forum, I had the misfortune of asking the question relating to parking meters. I shared the policies of our neighboring shore towns, and there wasn’t one candidate who would budge from what we are currently doing. I understand that there is a 15-minute waiver, but we have had visitors and locals beg to differ. Your family runs whale-watching and leisure cruise businesses. I heard a few times that last year was a bumper one for whale spottings — is that the case? And what kind of

factors affect whale sighting? We saw over 150 whales during last year’s field season — humpbacks, finbacks and minke. The sightings have increased over the last three years. We believe it directly correlates with the restrictions that the federal government placed on commercial fisherman catching bunker or menhaden. Whales feed on menhaden and since those restrictions have been in place, our waters have been teeming with menhaden. With that, our concern is there has been an uptick of recreational boats harassing dolphins and humpbacks, by getting too close to them. We’re going to avoid any questions about whether you’re going to follow the example of another president and tweet 20 times a day. But tell me this... how important is social media in promoting Cape May? It’s vital. We are working with the city to coordinate our efforts so we are not being redundant but gently overlapping our efforts to be most effective. This summer, is there anything you plan on doing in Cape May that you have never quite gotten around to? During the summer, I hardly get away from the dock. But I heard about a new store opening on the mall that I would like to visit. T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s skating time

here’s a funny thing that happens when Cape May’s Convention Hall is transformed into a roller rink. In the two hours it takes to change an open room into a rink, it becomes a time machine, too. Roller skating at Convention Hall is a Cape May tradition dating back to the 1970s, when you thought Melanie’s “Brand New Key” was really about roller skating. The surroundings are modern and the music is new, but many of the skaters are skating to their own drummers, hearing their own imaginary soundtracks as they go around and around. At the toddler skate, where parents in sneakers aid small skaters, there’s a suspicious bounce in the parental steps that doesn’t match up with the toddler tunes. Young mothers and fathers are thinking back to the aughts, when Avril Lavigne sang “Sk8ter Boi” and Nickelback had yet to become code for nerdy music. These young parents can sing and dance freely, because their children aren’t embarrassed by them yet.

Parents of tweens don’t have that luxury. As todays kid’s roll along to Pharrell, Lorde and Avicii, their parents hear Ace of Base and Salt n Pepa. Only the bravest risk multiple eye rolls with a couples skate when Boys II Men or Toni Braxton plays. Parents of older kids, like me, don’t worry about embarrassing our kids — they’re not here, and if they are, they act like we aren’t. I’m free to reminisce about skating to the Bay City Rollers and Tommy Tutone with other kids clad in wide-legged jeans and satin baseball jackets, bandanas stuck loosely in

our back pockets, the better to be “stolen” by a crush. I caught the post-disco skating boom, so we heard a strange mix of music — Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Bee Gees, KC and the Sunshine Band and Queen. Skaters even older than I wax nostalgic about the days when organ music ruled the rink. Skating is a great way to get a little winter exercise. You can take a break for some refreshments and enjoy the ocean view if you get more tired than you remember. Convention Hall’s roller skating schedule is subject to change, so check discovercapemaynj.org. Generally, they offer one Open Skate Friday afternoons from 4 to 6, and two sessions of Open Skate on Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 and 4 to 6. Toddler Skates are on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30, and Teen Skates on Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30. There is a President’s Day Holiday Skate from 1 to 3. Bring your own standard or in-line skates, or rent them — $2 traditional, $4 for in-line. Admission is $5. There is no skating February 18, 19, and 25, and March 18.

The Movie Column

W

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

e’ve all heard of movies that make you think, and some that have made you cry — even gotten you angry. But how about a movie that simply makes you feel. Sound too abstract for you? Can’t get your mind bent around that? Paterson is the most recent narrative feature film from Jim Jarmusch. Who? This filmmaker is no newcomer. He’s been at it since the 1980s and has worked with Bill Murray (Broken Flowers, 2005), Forest Whitaker (Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, 1999) and Johnny Depp (Dead Man, 1995). His films are quirky, but not in a Wes Anderson stylish sort of way… just in a… well… quirky… way. I wasn’t sure what to expect from his new movie. All I knew is that it’s getting awards and high praise. It is set in New Jersey (what’s not to like about that). It centers on a bus driver named (of all things) Paterson, who is also a poet. He is played by Adam Driver, best known for his role as Kylo Ren in the latest Star Wars installments and in the TV series Girls. Paterson’s wife is Laura,

Adam Driver stars in the lyrical Paterson played by Golshifteh Farahani, an Iranianborn actress with an equally impressive list of credits. Paterson goes to work faithfully every day. No need for an alarm as he wakes up at the same time. During whatever breaks he gets, he writes poetry. His words are expressed on screen as he either writes them or ruminates on them afterward. Meantime, Laura is at home, painting the drapes (she really does) or making cup-

cakes for a bake sale. Doesn’t this all sound thrilling? In fact, it’s not meant to thrill. It is meant to show the rhythm of life, the beauty in the every day. And in this we’re to find art and poetry. And we do if we’re open to it. If you’re saying, “What? Where’s the art in the everyday?” then you won’t enjoy Paterson. The couple is so beautiful together. Their relationship is not free of stress or strife but is free from all the unkindness and anger so besetting today’s romantic couple’s lifestyle as depicted in film (and dare I say in real life). So in that this film creates an escape from reality unlike any other. It is something as real as a bus ride and surreal as a world filled with positivity and (yes) poetry. And like one of my favorite movies, Housekeeping (1987) it goes for only a few well-deserved laughs. Suspend disbelief at the door and enjoy. Please join us February 26 at Cold Spring Brewery for our Oscar Party. Talk to friends about the movies you loved (or hated) and win great prizes.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé and I bought a house a year ago. Our wedding is in the summer and we would like to start a family a couple of years down the road. But I want a dog now. I had them growing up and lost my dog shortly before I met my fiancé. My fiancé is resistant. She says we’ll be tied down soon enough and we should enjoy our freedom while we have it. I just don’t look at it that way. It just seems empty to have such a beautiful home and yard and no dog to share it with. What can I do to change her mind? — Dog Gone It Dear Dog Gone It What you can do is prove to your fiancé that she is not going to be the one burdened with the care of your four-legged friend. The Doggie Nanny, for example, is a wonder-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ful option as an argument for not being “tied down.” Secondly, a trip to the Cape May County Animal Shelter will be all the help you need to convince her that there is a pup out there that needs a forever home. Dear Answer Lady We have a great relationship with our neighbors. We often go out together to the theater or wine tastings and have each other over to dinner at least once or twice a month. However, I think I am developing a crush on my neighbor’s wife, much to the dismay of my

own wife, who has noticed that I am enamored. I certainly don’t want to wreck my marriage and/or theirs but how do I stop myself? — Smitten Dear Smitten The Answer Lady knows you are not that stupid. The infatuation is a symptom that something is awry in your marriage. Ennui which leads to neglect is probably the number one cause of marital difficulties. Since you are clearly not duplicitous, the Answer Lady suggests you have a frank talk with your wife and discuss ways in which you can revitalize your marriage and put it back on solid ground. A romantic weekend is definitely called for. Reservations at Congress Hall would provide the atmosphere you need to focus on the two you. Dinner by the fire at the Blue Pig. Cocktails in the Brown Room and an afternoon at the spa will get you back on track. Staycations are the cat’s meow. The Answer Lady also suggests putting the friendship with the neighbors in the deep freeze for a little while so you and your wife can avoid distractions while you work on your relationship.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

O

kay, the rodent from Pennsylvania has made his prognostication. Fact checkers conirm that Phil’s shadow was visible. Six more weeks of winter. But shadow or no, birds adhere to the same timetable year after year. Laughing Gulls typically return to Cape May by or on the Spring Equinox. Tree Swallows arrive as early as the first week in March, Pine Warblers, too. American Robin? Look out your window — they never leave. Forster’s Tern typically arrive in mid-March. Yellowthroated Warbler, also mid-March. Ditto the Glossy Ibis? Purple Martin? First warm spell in March. By the time April comes around, there’s a new species a day. When House Wrens arrive in mid-April they herald the beginning of the end of spring migration. There are still lots of birds to come, but most of these will breed farther north. Most of the warblers and thrushes are just passing through. Of course, nature heralds the coming season in more ways than arrival dates. In March and April, Red-throated Loons and TO BENEFIT

Northern Gannet begin concentrating in Delaware Bay. The Second Avenue jetty is a good place to take in the show. Don’t expect to see the loons decked out in their maroonthroated finery. Late to molt, these tundra nesters often leave Cape May in their basic gray-and-white plumage. Common Loons, on the other hand get their neck rings in March. Heading inland just after sunrise, you can often see loose groups of three to five birds flying overhead. Their dark heads will appear drooped, their wing beats are rapid, steady and

elastic. Sometimes the birds will make their iconic yodeled call as they pass. Red-throated loons quack and do not typically fly over land, so any loon you see flying over Cape May is almost certainly Common. Another sign of the changing season will be the Bonaparte’s Gulls donning their black hoods. In winter, these silver and white tundra nesters show a dark ear patch. The hoods are donned for breeding. Bonnies, as they are affectionately known, also like to hang out at Second Avenue jetty, hovering and dipping into turbulent water that brings small food items to the surface. When coming upon a flock of Bonnies, look sharp for a smaller gull with soot-colored underwings (Little Gull) or a slightly larger gull with an orange or red bill (Black-headed). Why not make this spring the one you count down, bird by bird, on your calendar. If you pick up a copy of David Sibley’s The Birds of Cape May at Cape May Bird Observatory, the bar chart in the appendix will tell you what to look for when. Who needs the groundhog, when you’ve got Sibley.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

KIKI is a seven year old rottweiler and labrador retriever mix who is in need of some TLC. He would be best in a home with older children and no other pets. Kiki wants all the attention and cuddles! If you have a nice quiet and loving home, give this cutie a chance at happiness. Give this pup on home and adopt today!

GATSBY is a pit bull terrier mix who came in as a stray. Great Gatsby he is but great luck he has not because he ended up here! Gatsby has already learned lots of new and useful behaviors that will make him the most mannerly boy when he finds a new home. Stop by the shelter today. Gatsby will be eagerly awaiting your arrival!

SADIE an American staffordshire terrier mix who is shy at first, but once she gets to know you is quite the social butterfly! In her last home Sadie lived with a cat and they got along swimmingly, so no need to worry about owning other pets. How could you not fall in love with this adorable face? Come by the shelter and meet Sadie today!

If you let her, Callie would give you all the kisses in the world! Stop by the shelter and meet your new love bug!

RICHIE is his name because he is rich with energy! He was given a bigger cage because he loves to run, jump and play. He has been a shelter cat his entire life and is looking for a nice family to give him the attention and love he deserves; A nice home with room to run and frolic as he pleases! If you’re looking for some excitement, adopt Richie!

MILLIE lived outside for years feeding of a nice person who time to time let her inside. Somewhere along the way, Millie lost track of home and was dumped off at the shelter.
