Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.

TONI BONNETTE HADDONFIELD, NJ

How long have you been coming here? For 10 years... and in our minds, forever! Who are you normally with? We travel as a pack. A family pack! Favorite thing about Cape May? Driving over the bridge and into town, psyched to park the car and not move it for the next two weeks. We walk, hike, bike, swim, run to everything. We love to go to Congress Hall when we arrive, grab a pizza, sit on the rockers and enjoy our drinks. Least favorite thing? Leaving, but we extend that by going to breakfast on the way home, just to recap. Favorite restaurants? We come up with new ones every year as a result of getting Exit Zero’s list and the Exit Zero Discount Deck. Consistent favorites are Congress Hall/Blue Pig and The Boiler Room, George’s, Rusty Nail, Ugly Mug for lobster rolls, Tisha’s, fresh seafood take out at the Lobster House, The Red Store, and Key West Taco, and Seabreeze Inn. Favorite places to stay? Every house that we have rented to date has been in the historic distric. All have been sold and then remained single family. Also a wonderful home located right on the Cove. Amazing location and sunsets. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Reinforce their commitment to the historic district and the development that coexists on its perimeters.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

An opening cut through the bulwarks of a ship so that water falling on deck may flow overboard

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... this week, it’s EVICTED: Property and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond. A groundbreaking work on the central role of housing in the lives of the poor. Desmond spent two years embedded with eight poor families and delivers a gripping narrative on the ceaseless cycle of “Making rent, delaying eviction, or finding another place to live when homeless”. Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-6 (9-9 weekends). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

love animals, mammals, creatures... call them what you want. Dogs or donkeys, dolphins or deer, my heart tends to bleed more readily when I see an animal in distress, whether it be in real life or on a Facebook video. I went on a fishing trip once. Once. Couldn’t stand to see the fish flapping around in the bucket. Sure, I’ll eat those fish, but I don’t want to be there when they’re suffering. Don’t judge me... I was born this way. But even I was dismayed at a ridiculous article that took aim at the South Jersey Shark Tournament, held at South Jersey Marina over the weekend. According to the Daily Mail, one of the most hyperbolic newspaper websites (run by a super-cynical, utterly ruthless old colleague from my British tabloid days), the tournament featured savage scenes of butchery, most of it involving the mako shark, which, quoted one expert, is more endangered than the white rhino. Not true. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s endangered species list, the white rhino is “near threatened,” while the mako is on the rebound and has

moved up to the status of “vulnerable.” You can be sure that if the mako was truly at risk then the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Fisheries division would do something about it. As any fisherman (whether of the commercial or sporting variety will attest), NOAA takes overfishing pretty damn seriously. The Daily Mail is one of the most-read news sites in the world, which is why I’m mentioning it. Hopefully, readers with sensible heads on their shoulders will recognize what actually

sounded like a story from The Onion, the satirical newspaper. The story described “mako sharks being hauled up on the quayside and butchered, with smiling people standing and taking photographs beside the fish.” The expert quoted in the story “filmed the competitors using knives and winches to dismember the sharks, sorting the remains and removing the heads.” Yes, you’re right... what this article just described was fish cleaning. The sharks weren’t killed at the docks. They were dead in the water because, as tournament director Aaron Hoffman points out, “who wants to bring a live shark aboard their boat?” And those makos weren’t going to waste. The shark meat was handled by Erik Lund, fish cleaner extraordinaire, with the meat going back to the crews as well as being donated to some local organizations. It’s also worth pointing out that, during the tournament, 10 mako were landed and 30 were released because they were too small. There is way too much cruelty to creatures in this world... this wasn’t one of those times.

Dish Of The Week It’s the Puppy Issue. Why? Because it’s Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 23. So, for this issue we decided to focus on your pooch’s needs. Which brings us to the doggie menu from the Rusty Nail. Choose between a Doggie Bowl with either chicken or veggies, a Nail Burger (a plain all-beef hamburger) and finally, a Hot Diggety Dog, both burger and dog without the bun, because let’s face it, it’s summertime and your pup’s gotta look good! The Nail also has all-natural pup treats made with grain, real eggs, real cheese, real bacon and fresh ground peanuts. So after you take your dog to work this Friday, (reminder: Take Your Dog to Work Day), stop by the Nail and treat your best bud.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

$14.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street. Deeply concentrated and full bodied this Chilean Cabernet is a shining star! Ripe cherry, currant, and berry flavors are abundant throughout! Pairs well with beef and venison.

The greyhound breed has been an object of fascination for artists, poets and kings for as long as human beings have been civilized. So why would a drink made solely of vodka and grapefruit bare the name of such a noble breed? Maybe it’s because, like the breed, greyhound cocktails are typically sweet and relatively harmless (assuming you drink responsibly), which makes them easy to drink and in turn speeds up the happy process. But that’s just a wild guess because after much research the answer remains unknown. So where can you enjoy this? Harpoons on the Bay is the ideal spot. Kick back, enjoy the sunsets and, unlike the greyhound, take it nice and slow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not overly fond of puppies. They remind me of babies, and the whole issue of drool and poop and unconditional love is too much to bear. That is why (among many other reasons, one of which involves a cloning machine and another, the Holy Grail) I have had a succession of Yorkshire Terriers called Young Albert: they are the same size as a puppy when fully grown, but possessed of absolutely none of the charm or good nature (note: Yorkie puppies are simply ludicrous). Which all reminds me of a true story about a puppy, a tale that you might think comes from the pen of H.P. Lovecraft, but is from me, myself. I am reminded, though, that old Howard was a keen visitor to Cape May, until the night he and I exchanged blows over his irrational preference for cats over dogs. Anyways, this is the story of The Chippy, from dim and distant Scotchland. Chippy was some kind of Westie, from all accounts: my old friend, who owned him, was given the pup one stormy night, by a passing stranger, and said that he was, all in all, small, white

and bristly. Also, fair of nature and generally fun. So much fun, in fact that one day The Chippy was cavorting on the sofa, as was his wont, and fell off. A falling puppy, you say: what could be cuter? A Facebook sensation, surely! But, alas, no. The Chippy’s fall rendered him unconscious. When he finally came round, after several days insensate, he seemed fine. Back to cavorting, eating shoes, pooping in hats, all the usual typical “lovable” puppy stuff. But as time passed, people began to notice something unusual about The Chippy. He did not seem to be get-

ting any larger. Or older. In fact, as months turned to years, to a decade, all were agreed that the tiny dog was not, physically, a day older than when he’d taken his tumble off the sofa. Except, mentally, The Chippy was aging at the usual rate, and was not liking his puppy state so much. Eventually, what my friend had, was a ferociously bad tempered old dog trapped in the body of an ageless puppy. This led to all kinds of awful situations, as children and old people, plus Dog Lovers (those sorts who have hundreds of photographic images of their pets on their tiny telephones, and show you them at the slightest excuse. Often the animals are wearing neckerchiefs) tended to try and pet the lovable little animal, only to lose a finger, or the tip of their nose. My friend was sure that The Chippy knew his fate, which was not unlike that documentary film about Benjamin Button, except that The Chippy was not aging in either direction. In the end, The Chippy passed, raging at the world, mourned by few, but adored at a distance by many (some of whom had 10 fingers).

The Activity Column

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a night at the vineyard

ape May invites you to relax, tempting you to linger over a Bloody Mary with breakfast or to sip an after-dinner cocktail on a porch rocker. After a few days of well-earned sloth, you may feel a little guilty sitting in repose and watching runners go by, dutifully keeping to their weekly mileage goals. Turns out, some of those seemingly virtuous runners are racing toward a cocktail at the finish line. Those of us who don’t run may be surprised to find that many runners are also drinkers. In fact, the American College of Sports Medicine says that serious runners drink even more than their sedentary counterparts. Alcohol shows up wherever runners gather. Races and training runs often end with a celebratory beer. College running clubs have Sunday morning races designed to sweat out Saturday night’s excesses. Some runners — presumably those with iron stomachs — even drink while they run. Some “hash runs” offer participants a beer at the end of every mile. Beer Milers drink a beer at the end of every lap. Most of us would

Michael Clark

be hard pressed to drink that much water, but a man named James Nielsen chugged four beers — 48 ounces — and still managed to clock in under five minutes. (If you watch this feat on YouTube, you’ll see that he doesn’t look too happy.) In France, Le Marathon des Chateaux du Medoc offers runners wine at every water station along a route through 59 vineyards. Because running is so good for you, some doctors are okay with this odd mix, as long as you drink water, too. One researcher found that light beer is as effective as a sports drink for recovery after exercise, and others say

wine, including sangria, may control cholesterol. In addition, the social atmosphere of a post-race gathering improves mental health, and for reluctant runners, the party is the incentive for logging all those healthy miles. Of course, doctors say, non-drinkers shouldn’t add alcohol to their training regimens, moderation matters, and performance does suffer. Alcohol decreases speed, strength and endurance, so overdoing it will ruin your time, but drinkers don’t have to abstain completely to enjoy the health benefits of running, and all those miles keep the liquid calories from showing up on their midsections. The Summer Scurry for Sangrias will be held at Hawk Haven Vineyard this Saturday evening, June 24, from 6-9pm. It’s a flat, cross-country style run along a wooded trail. Register at gooddayforarun.com. The fee is $40 and includes a tank top, sangria, and a wine glass. There will be a post-race cocktail party, open to spectators, with music by Greg Jones Project. Visit hawkhavenvineyard.com for more information.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I had an operation and will be laid up for two weeks. My neighbors have been very supportive. Mowing the lawn, bringing food and helping with chores. But one neighbor is, I think, crossing the line. She told me yesterday she’s going to Swain’s to buy laundry baskets and organizers to tidy up my laundry room o make easier for me to navigate. I interpret this as a criticism, not a helpful gesture. Furthermore, when I asked her not to, she replied, “It’s already a done deal, dear.” She’s currently eyeing the kitchen. How do I get rid of this meddlesome pest? — Under Siege Dear Under Siege You could change the locks. Seriously, though, this is awkward. Since talking to her seems futile, bring in a family member or good

Wise answers to perplexing questions

friend to take up residence for a few days to thank her for all her help but to block her from assuming control. You do not need another pain preventing you from healing. This also takes you out of the fray. Her anger will be leveled on the gatekeeper, not you. Dear Answer Lady I’m having a barbecue next week and a couple of my daughter’s friends, who are invited, are vegan/vegetarian. Must I bow to this? It’s a barbecue, for goodness sake. That means hot dogs and hamburgers and baked

beans — with pork — and corn on the cob. In fact, I might hire JB Jr’s Southern BBQ to pull his truck up and let him do the work. Pulled pork — my kind of food. My wife says we have to have an alternative for the non-meat/nondairy folks. She says it’s important for us to be hospitable. Why? I say, let them eat corn. The whole thing gives me a headache. — Proud Carnivore Dear Carnivore Chill out. The onus of providing the appropriate dishes need not be heaped on you. The Answer Lady senses the frustration is that you have no recipes for guests in your wheelhouse. Never fear. Help is on the way. Give Empanada Mama’s a call. She’ll fix you up with an excellent array of appropriate selections and give you a chance to stop railing against the vegan/ vegetarian folks, allowing you to welcome them with open arms. With all the anger and frustration lifted from your shoulders, you can feel free to barbecue those burgers and dogs guilt free. And please resist the temptation to ridicule the non-meat/non-dairy folk — their beliefs are sincere as yours.

The Theater Column

E

Dottie Knapp reviews East Lynne’s “Will Rogers”

ast Lynne Theater Company opened its season with Will Rogers USA, and what a treat it is. Tom Byrn, who did a wonderful job bringing Abraham Lincoln to life for us last year, gives an equally winning performance as Will Rogers. This time it is a bit trickier since Will Rogers was at one time the number one box office star and his movies can still be seen. Still, Byrn captures the folksiness and the likability of Rogers beautifully. The show begins with Byrn being himself and giving us some insight to this beloved Rogers, but then he morphs into the character and all of sudden Byrn is gone and Rogers is there. Theater goers are used to sitting back and letting the actor do all the work, but this show asks (actually begs) for interaction. Will Rogers engaged his audience and so does Byrn as Rogers. He speaks directly to people, and many of his comments elicited responses on the night we attended. If nothing else, there was spontaneous applause for some of his remarks. And what remarks. It is sad but true the comments he

Tom Byrn excels in Will Rogers USA makes on the political scene in his day are as true now as they were then, and we suspect if you were to read a review of this play in 1974 you could make the same statement for that period. The mockery is mild and he takes pot shots at both sides of the aisle. Congress, the various presidents he knew; all their foibles were aired.

But it isn’t all political, Hollywood gets mocked as well. The more cynical may think, I don’t really want to spend a whole evening with a Pollyanna, but truth is Tom wears the mantle of Will Rogers well and as the evening progresses you become more and more aware of just how magnetic Rogers’ personality was and why the people he joked about didn’t take offense and the whole country loved him. There are aspects of being Will Rogers that are harder than others. Like the rope tricks. Here, Tom gives it his all, and maybe if you’re lucky one night they will let you try your hand at it. It is definitely harder than it looks, but he has the gum chewing and the stance down perfectly. The play is directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, who with Lee O’Connor the stage manager and technical director, had to transcribe the unpublished play, before bringing it to life. This play is so timely, you will continually have to remind yourself, this is 1935, not today. It is a play for all ages and we promise you an outstanding evening of entertainment.

Bird Droppings

W

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

hile leading my Monday morning bird walk at the Nature Conservancy preserve I was brought to wonder, once again: Why birds? What is it about these co-inhabitants of planet earth that we find so appealing? Why would a dozen otherwise well adjusted individuals rise at 7:30am on a perfectly good Monday just to engage birds? Among all the planet’s other denizens, only birds enjoy widespread, universal acclaim among humans. We integrate them into our music and literature. We name our professional sport franchises after them. We have, at times integrated their plumage into our clothing. We have worshiped them, in assorted religions, as gods and emissaries of gods. We have domesticated them and integrated them into our language. They delight our eyes with color and enliven the landscape with their comings and goings. And their vocalizations are the audiofabric of the seasons — the acoustic backdrop of our lives. But more than this, birds endear themselves to us by their mere presence.

Other animals avoid us, flee from us, birds by their proximity flatter us, treat us as the kind, good-natured creatures we believe ourselves to be. They seem to trust us. Before our ancestors climbed down from the trees, we shared the safety of elevated branches with birds. On the ground we were prey to all manners of clawed, fanged and furry things. A host of common enemies further bonded us to our arboreal nest mates. When parrots screeched an alarm, we dropped our fruit and started climbing. Those

naked apes who ignored the warning became lion scat before they could breed. Thus we herald from a genetic line of survivors whose awareness of birds was acute. It is not merely coincidence that birds and humans share much the same visual and auditory range. Our fascination has a visceral as well as an emotional foundation, Speaking of viscera... the gastronomic appeal of birds has long motivated human interest. The first written account of Cape May’s birds focused upon their epicurean value. In 1684, a visiting seaman identified as “Master Evelin,” commented upon the “infinite quantity of bustards [turkey], swans, geese and fowl.” Given Cape May’s strategic good fortune and surfeit of protected natural areas, we may anticipate that our fame as a birdwatching destination will endure and that given the appeal of birds, the ranks of bird watchers are destined to grow as more and more baby boomers retire and begin casting their genetically honed senses in the direction of the natural world — a world filled with birds.
