Dish Of The Week As Dean Martin crooned, “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that’s amore.” Now, That’s Amore, located on Washington Street Mall, may not have pizza pie or stars that make you drool just like pasta fazool. But they DO have a lobster ravioli made with cognac, baby shrimp, mascarpone, wild forest mushrooms, shallots and white wine that is ridiculously tasty. One bite will send you over the moon. So next time you dance down Washington Street with a cloud at your feet, pop into the cozy restaurant and enjoy the romantic atmosphere. Your heart will play tippy-tippy tay.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
$15.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street.
Regularly $30 per bottle, this red delivers bold notes of “blue fruit” layered with spices and garrigue herbs. Enjoy with rich cuisine or lightly flavored dishes.
Looking to get a buzz on? Oddly enough, there’s a cocktail called the Buzz Aldrin. And since July 20 is Moon Day, we felt it appropriate to celebrate American astronauts by getting a buzz from a Buzz. This cocktail combines vodka with Tang. Tang is the drink of astronauts after all! It was used by early NASA manned space flights. In 1962, when Mercury astronaut John Glenn conducted eating experiments in orbit, Tang was selected for the menu. So before you decide to do the moonwalk or moon someone, pick up some Tang before stopping by Sunset Liquors or Collier’s for a bottle of vodka. But please remember to drink responsibly... we wouldn’t want you to get too spaced out.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some astronaut-appropriate products and found the answer at Good Scents on Carpenters Lane. The Items: Moonglow necklaces. The Appeal: July 20 is Moon Day. And what better way to celebrate than to discover your awe-inspiring personal moon, then wear it around your neck. Moonglow is a celebration of life’s most cherished experiences. And like the moon itself, the charms glow in darkness, honoring those memories that rise in our hearts, never to be forgotten. The Price: $45.00-$49.00.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
on’t you just adore the moon? Sitting up there, all round and silver and telling you in a voice you can’t resist, to strip naked, howl, drop to all fours and run around town eating anyone too slow to flee? No? Oh… Anyways, did you know Cape May had the first unrecorded moon landing? It remains unrecorded because of a slight miscalculation in our plans. We were testing a long-range missile, in case New York started getting ideas above its station again. Or in case Wildwood annoyed us: obviously in that case the missile would have gone mostly up and then down again, but still, everyone likes a good spectacle. And I recall one wit, seeing the 300-foot giant on the launch pad atop The Admiral Hotel (I concede this was the second slight mistake), said, “Well, shucks, why don’t we just shoot the moon down with it? Keep all that cheese for ourselves?” (Obviously, this was from a none-too-bright observer, from Ocean City, if I recall). He was beaten with sticks, obviously, but the idea stuck, and we had a fast rebranding
and sold tickets for the ride, for $100 each. In the end, the crew consisted of the Amelia Earheart, the British aristocrat Lord Lucan, and a chimpanzee. We packed snacks, and a map, and off they went, and I must say the launch was spectacular, though there was some collateral damage to the launchpad. By “some” I mean, total. It took the best part of a day for them to get there, by which time most Cape May natives, being short of attention, and ever seeking new novelties, had moved on, but a diehard core of us rushed to mission control
(aka The Brown Room) and watched on a tiny screen as they landed, and planted the Cape May flag. They then wandered around collecting moon rock and some dead aliens, before signaling that they would like to come home, as the paper bags of fresh air we had inflated were growing stale. It was at this point that we were forced to deal with a hitherto unforeseen mission priority, as we’d really only thought of the “getting there” part, and had assumed, as we do for most plans, that in end it would turn out fine. Well, they made quite a fuss, when we broke it to them that unless they could rig up a new rocket, and fuel it, there would be no coming home, per se. The chimp threw some poop, then claimed the moon for all apes, which confirmed my suspicions about them. Eventually we came up with a fine plan, that involved (and still does) an annual small rocket of supplies being sent up to Cape May’s Official Moon Base. As far as I know, there is a thriving colony there. We just need to perusade them to talk to us again.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Shakespeare at the Physick Estate
very English speaker owes a debt to William Shakespeare, who coined 1700 common words we still use. Some examples... Moonbeam. Eyeball. Lackluster. Zany. Advertising. Lonely. Jaded. He created characters that allow us to reflect on on our flaws — ambition, indecisiveness, jealousy — and our strengths — passion, logic, loyalty. He has something for everyone — as your teacher probably used to say, if you don’t see yourself in it, read it again. Shakespeare wrote about the issues of his time for the people of his time, and yet his work still resonates. The plays manage to keep up with both the march of history — Julius Caesar caused a controversy this year — and with the individual march through life. I sighed over Romeo and Juliet in high school, but now I think those darn kids should have obeyed their parents. The sonnets that seemed sappy in my twenties now seem poignant. “Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds” has greater power once you’ve faced a few tempests together.
Michael Clark
Remind yourself of how good Shakespeare is — take in a performance of Hamlet at the Emlen Physick Estate. Outdoor theater gives you a hint of what plays were like in the early days of Greek drama, when poets read on a hillside. Formality goes out the… there is no window. We are connected by the elements — if it’s hot, or buggy, or windy, actors and audience alike feel it. The audience is a little less reverent, eating and moving about as if it were a sporting event instead of a show. At the same time, the audience is personally connected, as the actors deliver their speeches directly, making eye contact. We’re
sort of like the “groundlings” of Shakespeare’s time, who paid a penny to stand in front of the stage. We’re on the same level, and the actors can see us, too. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities has invited the REV theater to present this two-hour Hamlet. REV promises a “contemporary, opulent production” including active involvement of the audience, with nine actors, some playing more than one role, in the tradition of touring productions in the Elizabethan age. Bring a picnic and a blanket or chair and wear bug spray. Come early if you’d like to treat yourself to a little wine from the Carriage House Café and Tearoom, and relax as jesters and jugglers prepare you for the performance. Hamlet plays July 19- 23 and July 25-29 at 7pm. on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, $15 for students, and free for kids under 12. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth at Ocean Street or at the Physick Estate. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I broke up with a guy months ago but he still calls and texts, like every day. At first, I thought it was okay to retain a friendship, but now I’m not so sure. His texts are getting a little sexual. And he’s hinting that he might “stop by” in a few days. His is still married, although he claims they have been separated for years, and he is currently living with another woman — who is the reason why I ended it with him in the first place. I’m beginning to think this isn’t healthy. — Mixed Signals Dear Signals What was your first clue that this manipulative behavior “isn’t healthy?” The Answer Lady thinks you should look at your own complicity in encouraging this deceitful person. He is not being honest with anyone, most
Wise answers to perplexing questions
especially you. End this once and for all or you risk the danger of being sucked back into his world and what will you get out of that, except a dose of the same medicine. You need a Cape May girls’ getaway. A day at the beach is the ticket, followed by cocktails and dinner on the Schooner at the Lobster House. Next morning, meet the girls for a bike ride out to Cape May Point and have a lovely breakfast at the Red Store. Delete that man’s phone number from your cell and Monday morning resolve to move on. Don’t you think you deserve better
than that, even as a friend Dear Answer Lady I have been dating a lady since the spring, or at least I think I am. She seems to run hot and cold. We have a great weekend and then I don’t hear from her for a week. Just when I write her off, she shows up again as though her behavior is normal. We have such a great time when we are together that I hate to rock the boat. Maybe she’s just commitment phobic? What do you think? — Smitten Dear Smitten The Answer Lady thinks you should ask her what her intentions are and be prepared for either a lie or an unflattering answer. Regardless, isn’t it better to know where you stand rather than stand around waiting for her beck and call? Only you can decide that. But, while you’re deciding — you need to step out and date some other women. A night of dancing at Carney’s, Cabanas and The Boiler Room is just what you need. There are plenty of women who would love the pleasure of your company and who would give you the respect you deserve.

The Theater Column
I
“The Wreck of the Spanish Armada”, reviewed by John Alvarez
n a Paris hotel room, two former lovers examine lost romance, socio-political strife, modern piracy and whether the road not chosen as a youth is worth a look and the risk later in life. The Wreck of the Spanish Armada (a compound fractured fairy tale), a play being presented by the SPQR Stage Company at Cape May County Airport, is one filled with resonant dialogue, steeped in themes ranging from the nautical, to witty and wise as they paint the scene with vivid imagery. To say the play, written and directed by Bill Sterritt, has clever dialogue would be an unfair and unjust description. Sterritt, who plays one of the show’s two characters, a charming rogue pirate named Drake, weaves his words in such a way it invites the audience to eavesdrop upon the private conversation of two formerly inseparable lovers as they reminisce, rekindle and regret some of the decisions they made in their lives. The other character in the play is Anne Cloudy, a doctor of radiology. Dr Cloudy is portrayed by Susan Tischler. For many
supporters of the local theater and entertainment scene in Cape May, Tischler has always delivered a fantastic performance. This time around, even her most loyal fans will pause to catch their breath as they realize the depths and richness of character Tischler so effortlessly reaches. Sterritt is also equal to the tasks of diving to the depths of his character, Drake, to plunder the treasure of emotional riches. As his character is revealed, the audience discovers Drake has gone from a likeable yet rudderless South Jersey beach bum who ruled his kingdom from his beach chair to be transformed by his choices into an international pirate king, leading his crew of rebels in Mogadishu so his people can share in the profits and benefits of their lands which had been stripped away by oil tycoons and their price gauging. In the hands of a lesser actor, the character could easily be played as a twodimensional, updated version of the bad buccaneer portrayals which have been sailing the cinematic seas these past few years.
However, in the hands of Sterritt, Drake is presented as a man who is well aware of his mistakes and who accepts them as part of who he truly is. Sterritt and Tischler’s connection with each other’s characters are genuine — a necessity in a show like this one. The audience seating begins a few inches away from the staging area so they are close enough to see if the actors are being less than authentic. At the end, as the applause fills the room, it safe to say more than a few audience members may think about one or two roads they didn’t choose to travel upon. Perhaps some people will even wonder if the roads are worth a second look. Performances for The Wreck of The Spanish Armada are Monday to Thursday at 8:00pm through Labor Day weekend. For the months of September and October the show will be performed on Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00pm. Admission is $20. For reservations and locations, please call 323-793-2153 or Aerodrome@aol.com.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he world’s newest birder wandered into Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point the other day, as I was starting my Break into Birding class. But my walk in was oblivious to birds and Cape May’s fame as a world-famous birding destination. He was simply vacationing and on a hot afternoon correctly surmised that the Northwood Center had air conditioning. The store staff greeted him as cordially as they would any visitor and asked if he was here for the course. The gentleman allowed that he was not a bird watcher but thought learning a bit about birds would be a worthy use of his afternoon. Few members of our species don’t like birds. They enliven the landscape and please us with their colors and song. The trick is gaining the intimacy you need to enjoy their vibrant plumage. Cardinals with their searing red rainment; indigo buntings whose blue feathers are so rich, they flirt with black; prothonotary warbler, a bird the color of honey set on fire. All of these birds are part of the Cape May avian spectrum.
Binoculars confer supernatural intimacy with even blandly plumaged birds, disclosing spectral wonders inevitable to the naked eye. Seated in the new bird blind, I directed my three students to focus on the mourning dove foraging near the water source. This common mouse-colored bird is transformed by binoculars into a gem-bearing wonder. The feathers about the neck shimmer with iridescent hues and the turquoise eye ring is riveting. The encounter called to mind an interaction I once had with a couple from Newport
Beach who were strolling the grounds of the resort. Stopping in front of a garden bursting with blossoms, I asked whether they’d ever studied flowers with binoculars. Turning my Zeiss 8x42 SEs over to eager hands I watched as her expression burst into childlike delight. “It’s like stepping into a Georgia O’Keeffe painting,” she exclaimed, turning the instruments over to her husband. “Wow!” he breathed. Ain’t nuthin beats “wow.” It’s what we say when the grand finale signals the end of the Fourth of July fireworks display. For bird watchers, the display goes on and on. Butterflies, dragonflies, lichen and oak leaves. The magic looking glass transforms everyday wonders into supernatural encounters. So the world’s newest birder went right in and bought binoculars? No, he did not but I’ll bet he has them now, and with fall bird migration just beginning, he is primed to see his world in a whole new and engaging way, one that makes Cape May’s environment a backdrop to discovery at every turn. Wow... it’s what you’ve been missing.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MISSY is a chow chow who sadly came to the shelter after living with her family for eight years. She is house trained and has polite manners. Missy enjoys playing with her toys and running in the yard, but she is content taking leisurely walks. Missy loves car rides and exploring new surroundings. Give her a second chance and adopt today!
SKIPPER is a mature seven year old boy who came back to the shelter after living with a family for four years. Skipper’s family said that he is happy to curl up in any space to sleep as long as you are nearby. He is terribly sad to be back to the shelter, but a sweet guy like Skipper definitely has happily ever after in his future. Give Skipper a second chance!
CHLOE is seven years old but has the energy of a young dog. She loves to romp and play in the yard, but is content to take a leisurely walk and has perfect leash manners. After playtime, Chloe loves to sit by your feet and relax. She is extremely sweet and affectionate and enjoys being pet and brushed. Give her the companionship she deserves. Adopt!

My husband and I have been working with Charity Clark over the past few years to find the perfect home to buy in Cape May. Charity has amazing knowledge of Cape May and West Cape May. She helped us find the perfect home for our family. Charity is the best realtor we have ever dealt with. She helped us from the second we met her to the end of our closing. We can't wait to work with Charity again!
