Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

must be getting old... seems like every other day (or maybe every day), I either silently (or, more usually, vocally) observe that things aren’t what they used to be. Yep, usually I’m bitching about how the younger generations don’t know what hard work is. Show me a teenager with a solid work ethic and I’ll show you 99 others who have their faces locked on to their iPhone, utterly unaware of what’s going on in real life. But let’s leave the work ethics for another column. Instead, I’ve been ruminating about bikes. On Cape Island, bikes are necessary. In the summer, it’s the most efficient mode of transport — if you don’t agree, turn on to Lafayette Street or Beach Avenue in August and try to nudge the speedometer north of 10mph. Right now, there is the potential for an exciting rethink about how we do transport on the island. Cape May City Council has set up a study into biking and walking the island, with a committee being chaired by former deputy mayor Bill Murray. To me, the issues are clear. We need to

expand and improve accessibility for bike riders on the island. And we need to be working with the county, too, since many of their roads are affected. If you’ve ridden the gauntlet that is West Perry Street on your bike (even more fun when an NJ Transit bus joins the parade), then you’ll agree that we need to make biking safer. Bikers, in truth, shouldn’t go anywhere near West Perry (instead, turn right on Park then right on Windsor and go into town that way), so there should be thought given to sig-

bento style lunch boxes

nage denoting bike-friendly routes into, and out of, town. But there’s more to the bike issue... I’ve noticed that a lot of people don’t seem to know HOW to ride. I’m not alone here. A colleague told me the other day he’d seen a whole family zig, zag and wobble on Broadway as if they’d never been on a saddle in their lives. I saw the exact same thing last week... three kids got on bikes at a rental place and I had to get out of the way as they slalomed toward me, kinda out of control. Is this part of the iPhone/social media curse that will surely doom our civilization? Kids can’t ride bikes any more because they never want to do anything other than check Snapchat or What’s App? Not sure, but some kind of bike education program could be useful. And, still on the subject... please buy a rear light for your bike. You’re asking for trouble. Don’t forget, it’s Super Saturday on August 3. First, there’s Victor Grasso’s art show at SOMA, followed by the Midsummer fundraiser at Beach Plum Farm. Both are can’t miss events. See you there!

Dish Of The Week One crab, two crab, red crab, blue crab. The Crab House at Two Mile Landing has it all. For a start, there’s the beautiful location, overlooking the marshes, with a beautiful sunset thrown in for decoration. As for the food, no need to be shellfish here... you can order up as many crabs as you want. They even have all-you-can-eat blue claw crabs for the cray-zy crab lovers. It’s like you’re trapped in a crab dream. But you won’t have to pinch yourself to wake up. (We apologize for the endless list of puns — this is what happens in the 10 minutes before we go to press... bear with us). This is what we call a crab-shoot...

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

$22.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street. This consumer-friendly Cabernet is full bodied and jam packed with layers of berries and cassis. Extremely good value.

Feeling crabby after a long night at Cabarney’s? (That’s when you start at Cabanas then shuffle over, crab-style, to Carney’s for a night of more booze and possibly a little dancing — do the crab crawl! Or vice-versa.) Don’t be a hermit. Head over to Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill for a little hair of the dog and order up a Chesapeake cocktail. It’s a housemade bloody mary that consists of vodka and all the usual spices and garnishes — fresh celery and horseradish, tomato juice, salt and pepper... the difference here is that the glass is rimmed with Old Bay seasoning and a pinch thrown in the mixture for good measure. It’s crabtastic! Come out of your shell and give it a try.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

’m not so keen on crabs... nature’s garbage men. Why, it wasn’t so very long ago here in Cape May that we used to feed undesirables such as tax men, Wildwooders and people who say “y’all” to the crabs by means of a high tide and a set of sturdy shackles in the hold of the concrete ship. Of course, that went a wee bit astray, as rather than the expected horde of well-fed, small crabs, we ended up with just one huge beastie, who we fearfully named Sawyer. Sawyer was the size of a sedan, but lower and wider, and his claws were the size of canoes. He wasn’t just content to eat our embarrassments and outcasts, either: Sawyer took to ambushing early morning Shoebies and once disguised himself as Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, and happily sat and let diners stroll in. I was so impressed by this ingenuity that I let the crafty crustacean finish, and in fact suggested to a bus of tourists from Philly that they might want to have a stack of pancakes. But enough is enough, and I’m aware

that just as the chimpanzees are hoping to oust us from our spot atop the evolutionary heap, so are crustaceans planning to unseat the apes. So I rustled up a mob, armed with Cape May’s traditional assortment of f laming torches, pitchforks, Thompson sub machine guns, a f lamethrower or two and my own towed 88mm f lak gun (a souvenir from the reichstag) and off we went. Well, Sawyer led us on a merry dance, and it turned out his shell was as tough as battleship plate, and in the end we had to

use that “spare” atom bomb from the Cold War (the one we were saving for secession) on him as he climbed atop the Admiral Hotel. On the plus side, the result was no more Sawyer, and also the wind took the fallout over Ocean City, but Sawyer was deposited all over town in small steaming chunks, that proved too tempting for our dim citizenry to resist, and so a radioactive feast was enjoyed by all. That is part of the reason Cape May natives are so unique, of course, and why most of them glow in the dark. But it left me with a sense of deep unease about consuming crabs, as I’m aware that they are watching from the ocean, and come the day they topple the apes, they will round up those of us still alive and present us with photographic evidence of our crimes. Well, that may be fine with you but I for one plan on welcoming our crustacean overlords. Until the cockroaches step up and take their turn, of course.

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Craft Beer and Crab Festival

rabs get a bad rap. Hippocrates named cancer after them, and their reputation hasn’t improved much since, in spite of a lovely nebula and some charming folks born under their astrological sign. There’s something about that sideways locomotion that seems untrustworthy, even though some of the earth’s 7000 crab species can walk forward. We use crabs as a metaphor for petty human behavior, pointing out that crabs in a bucket could escape if they would lift each other up instead of pulling each other down. The English word “crab” comes from a German root, meaning “to scratch or claw,” and “crabby” was first used to describe things that were crooked or ugly, like bad penmanship. Since about 1800, it usually means cranky or mean. It’s hard to be crabby about a Craft Beer and Crab Festival. Sure, some people get a little persnickety about their beer and crab preferences. Beer snobs may talk about the “wine-ification” of beer and debate the authenticity of the “craft” brewing process.

Some even try to instruct you on how to enjoy a beer. Crab lovers are equally risky, what with their debates over how best to enjoy the crustacean. Purists insist on simplicity — whole crabs steamed with vinegar, served on newspaper with a mallet, perhaps a little butter and spice. Others insist on a more elegant presentation. Crab cakes bring out the real fighters — should you use bread rumbs, panko, or crushed pretzels? Mayonnaise or just paprika and dry mustard? Does it really matter if you use white pepper instead of black? Must it be Old Bay or will another

brand do? Is nutmeg essential, or just nutty? Backfin and claw meat, or only lump crab? “Lump crab” is a technical legal term, apparently, and is not the same as “big pieces of crab.” Also, pasteurization is a dirty word. Or else a godsend. Differences fade when you are enjoying your favorites outdoors, with good music. MAC’s Craft Beer and Crab Festival will be held Saturday, August 5, from 10am to 6pm. Music begins at 11. Go early to be sure your favorite vendor doesn’t run out. There will be local and regional beers along with steamed crabs, crab cakes, and other summer fair fare, like bacon on a stick, which is exactly what it sounds like, and way tastier than it deserves to be. Try shrimp, lobster roll, hamburgers or hot dogs if crab isn’t your thing, and look for crepes for dessert. Craft and collectible vendors will showcase their wares on the lawn of the Emlen Physick Estate, and strolling jugglers and clowns will add to the fun. Admission is free. There is a charge for food, drink and commemorative tee shirts and souvenirs. Call 609-884-5404.

Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter is a recovering alcoholic and the single mother of an eight year-old boy who already has behavioral problems. I have been babysitting him all summer while she works, because he has been thrown out of all daycare programs and camps. Now she wants him to sleep over. I know the responsibility of her child weighs heavily on her but I cannot assume that job. I love him but I raised my kids and I would like some time to myself. On the other hand, I worry about leaving him with someone who does not engage with him. — Worried Nana Dear Worried Nana This is clearly a situation which calls for a qualified professional to guide and advise. while you need to heal thyself. The Answer Lady suggests a weekend retreat beginning with a relaxing brunch at the Blue Pig complete with mimosas. Congress Hall has a full service spa right around the corner and after a pampering treatment; you can enjoy an afternoon at the beach. As to your dilemma — a compromise of maybe two overnights a week, if you think you can manage it. But again, your daughter needs a professional to help her transition into parenthood without relapsing.

Dear Answer Lady My mother, who was a model in her younger years, constantly criticizes my clothing choices to the point that I try to sneak out of the house without her seeing me. Or, I try to avoid telling her that I have a special event. Unfortunately, she knows about the big party I am attending next month and is already advising regarding my attire. I want to make my own decisions. Is there no solution to this, save moving out? I’m only 19. I have three more years of college before I can be on my own. — Harassed Dear Harassed March right over to Cash and Clive, the new boutique on Washington Street. Owner Jessica Cicchitti or a staff member of her staff will guide you. Together, you can forge your own identity. It’s hard to be the child of someone who has achieved a level of success on the great stage of life, but be brave. You will find your own way and clearly already have a great sense of self which you should take great pride in. A “look” is important, but who you are as a person is more important.

“Ah, Wilderness” at East Lynne Theater is reviewed by Tom Sims

s there anything more simple... more complex than love’s first kiss? East Lynne Theater’s revival of Eugene O’Neil’s Broadway play Ah, Wilderness! follows the story of Richard — anarchist, rebel, poet, son of the local newspaper owner... and teenager in love. Richard sends a few poems to the object of his desire, Muriel, and her father finds them... and thinks they’re offensive. Thus ends the affair — before it even began, before their first kiss. Richard’s response is to go on a drunken rampage, flirting with other women. Will he reconcile with Muriel? Will they have that first kiss? O’Neill is an iconic playwright with four Pulitzer Prizes to his name. His work includes historic plays such as Long Day’s Journey into Night, Anna Christie and The Iceman Cometh. Ah, Wilderness! is his only comedy. It premiered on Broadway in 1933, and endures with its coming-of-age themes to this day. Richard is played by Cape May’s Evan Smilyk, who started out as a child star and is growing up right in front of us. He has played

Brigid Harrington, Evan Smilyk in Ah, Wilderness! in the ELTC production of Zorro! and Huck Finn, and he delivers each time. In the role of Richard, Evan plays the rebellious teen more aloof — gazing over the audience as if to ignore and engage us all at once. His outbursts are compelling and his drunkenness is hilarious. Mark Lazar plays Richard’s father, Nat Miller, pitch perfectly. He had big shoes to fill as two legendary figures played the part: George M. Cohan and Will Rogers. Emma Palzere-Rae plays Essie, Richard’s sometimes stern, sometimes forgiving (always worrying) mother

flawlessly. There are a few scenes that are particularly delightful, including one where Essie’s brother (played by Mark Edward Lang) has had one too many and makes a bit of a fool of himself in front of his entire family. Then there is the bar scene where Richard lets loose after his break up with Muriel, where Rachel Holt provide big laughs as Belle, shall we say a “regular patron.” The entire cast, 15 in all, deliver performances that are outstanding with plenty of fun throughout. Gayle Stahlhuth directs, Lee O’Connor is technical director. The set and costumes bring just the right mood for the era. Ah, Wilderness! is what summer theater should be. The story and this cast bring back sentimental joy in forgiveness, honesty, love... and that first kiss. Richard and Muriel (playfully portrayed by Brigid Harrington) are adorable as they work through their conflicts. The ensemble scores on laughs, and the night floats by on a breeze. Spend a little time with this timeless classic. The play runs through September 2. More info at 609-884-5898 or www.eastlynnetheater.org.

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he annual gathering of purple martins along the Maurice River has begun. The towering tornadoes of descending birds are large enough to turn up on weather radar and in the morning when birds leave the roost, radar shows a signature donut pattern as birds fan out in all directions, their destination, the insect rich skies over Cumberland Counties marshes. Feasting on large insects like dragonflies, wasps, and flying beetles, the high-flying swallows are easily overlooked until they gather just before sunset to roost. A particularly good vantage point is the Riverside Park in Mauricetown. Martin aspirants can hedge their bets by registering to go on the Purple Martin Cruises departing on multiple dates in August andsponsored by Citizen’s United, a conservation group dedicated to the protection of the Maurice River. The boat trips also offer close views of nesting osprey, whose riverside nests are overflowing with young. Two to three young are typical in years marked by an abundance of fish. This year appears to be so blessed. Bald eagles

are also common along the river and are frequently observed pursuing fish-burdened 0sprey. While eagles can catch their own fish, our national bird finds it easier to appropriate than catch. This is the reason Benjamin Franklin objected so strongly to its selection as our national bird. Ben, partial to his victuals, preferred the turkey. Be that as it may, there seems to be plenty of fish to go around and the natural world operates under different standards than Ben’s. Kleptoparacatism is practiced by many species.

Back to martins. These largest of all swallows are here to fatten up for the long flight to Amazonia where the insect-rich skies over the rainforest will sustain them during winter. Even Cumberland County is insect impoverished in winter — not that this has been a particularly brutal summer for insects. In fact so insect poor was May that our breeding martins did not start nesting until July. With young fledging late, it’s possible that our purple martin spectacle may extend into September this year. Good news for human viewers, bad news for dragonflies. But sooner or later, at some point, the weather radar is going to show a different morning pattern. Instead of a donut, the birds will assemble into a wave heading south. Until then, the evening skies over Mauricetown will be enlivened by the wheeling hosts of birds and the air will ring with the burbles, chirps and trills of these most social of swallows. By the way, the purple martin colony at Cape May Point State Park is one of the largest and healthiest in the state and birds are active dawn till dusk.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

SUNNY is a Chihuahua and Pomerian mix who was abandoned in a crate in the woods. Sunny was rehabilitated by shelter staff and volunteers whom he has learned to trust over the past six months. An adopter would need to commit to earning Sunny’s trust by working with staff before he can go home. He is a very loving pup looking for the right home.

MARTHA is a young mastiff/boxer mix who came to the shelter as a stray. She is always smiling and eager to learn new skills that will help her to be a great and companion. She loves running in the yard and chasing toys followed by splashing in a kiddie pool to cool down. At 85 pounds, she still wants to climb into your lap and show you lots of affection.

BUNNY is an energetic young lab mix that craves attention and love. She has boundless energy to run in the yard and chase toys. She is especially excited about squeaky toys and will toss them in the air. 609.408.2192 “We had the pleasure of working with Charity on the purchase of a new home in West Cape May, as well as the sale of our existing home in Cape May. On both fronts, Charity far exceeded our expectations with her insights, guidance, and follow through. She was on top of every issue, and ensured both properties closed on time and with no hassle. I can’t recommend Charity enough if you are looking to buy or sell a property – she is an absolute delight!!” -Nancy Hanslowe
