Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
t’s hard to imagine Cape May as being anything other than a restaurant town. On this island, there are probably around 70 restaurants offering the whole gastro gamut, from fast food to fine dining. That’s a lot of restaurants for a little place. But it wasn’t always like this. As with all great things, it took a trailblazer to get things going. It’s fair to say that The Mad Batter provided the spark that inspired Cape May’s restaurant revolution. And for that we have to thank a man who had no right getting into the restaurant business. In 1976, Harry Kulkowitz, a tile and marble setter, picture framer, photographer and art dealer drove from Philadelphia to visit friends in Cape May, a place he’d visited a few times before. This time, he decided to hang around a little longer than usual. He joined a poker game at the Carroll Villa Hotel on Jackson Street. That game included Ric Rutherford and Janis Quiggle (who would both go on to establish Rio Station), Bill Weinberger, an accountant, Mike Rucci, a contractor, and Greg Thoden, who had
recently inherited the Carroll Villa. Harry came up with the notion of starting a restaurant at the Carroll Villa so he made an agreement with Greg to rent the restaurant space for $1,500. But since he didn’t have that money, he offered to paint the building instead. Harry’s daughter Sigrid organized her friends to get the job done. One of these friends was Pam Huber, who would go on to meet, and marry, Harry’s son Mark (who had been serving in the army). The Mad Batter that Harry opened,
along with his partner Vickie Seitchik, 40 years ago, is still a highlight of the Cape May dining scene, operated by Mark and Pam and their children, Marta and Kyle. A recent and beautiful renovation of the porch has supplied another reason to go there. The reason I’m mentioning all this is that Harry Kulkowitz, a man whose dream of a quirky restaurant in Cape May helped deliver the culinary scene we all enjoy today, passed away last week at the good old age of 92. His was a life lived to the full. “Think of Harry Kulkowitz, the Jewish son of Russian immigrants, who fudged his age at enlistment so he could join his friends in the fight,” said none other than President Barack Obama in a 2014 speech marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Yes, Harry was a war hero, too. My condolences go to the Kulkowitz family. And rest in peace, Harry... we all should strive to live as you did. Enjoy Labor Day weekend, folks. And remember, there are still three weeks of summer to go!

Dish Of The Week If you’re looking for a dish that will make you say, “I love you from my head to-ma-toes,” then a pit stop to Oyster Bay for their fried tomatoes is a must during tomato season (which is right now if you weren’t sure). It’s made with panko-crusted tomatoes, fried, then topped with spicy New Orleans-style remoulade sauce and crabmeat. Enjoy this small plate at their buzzy bar scene, a hot spot for locals in the know. After, if you’re not tomatoed out, order up their caprese flatbread loaded with tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, pesto and locatelli cheese. Both of these dishes are perfect for sharing or for just over-indulging on your own. We never judge...
BEER OF THE WEEK
dinner from 5pm wednesday through Monday early birds specials 5-5:30pm
Broadway & Sunset ~ 884-4543 Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
$14.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard Laced with aromas and flavors of red berries (think strawberry, cherry, and raspberry) with hints of floral infused white peach, the wine is decidedly dry yet silky smooth. Pairs well with lean fish, snacks, pasta, or just hanging on the porch.
Now, although we’ve tackled the bloody mary a few issues back, it’s hard to not include a bloody mary as the cocktail of the week when the theme of this issue is tomatoes, right? Okay, so since we’ve cleared that up, who do WE think makes one horn-tootin’ heck of a hangover cure? Well, considering they have a complete cocktail list titled “Hair of the Dog,” it’s no surprise we’re gonna have to give this one to the popular morning drinking spot, The Mad Batter. Their Batter Bloody Mary is made with their famous housemade spicy bloody mix and Absolut Peppar. It’s absolutely delicious! So before the West Cape May Tomato Festival this weekend, don’t play ketchup! Start early.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some tomato-appropriate products and found the answer from Cape May Olive Oil Co on Carpenter’s Lane. The Item: Sun-ripened tomato, infused Cape May sea salt and sun-dried tomato and olive tapenade. The Appeal: If you’re looking to add some local flavor to your cooking, or just want a delicious spread for that boring piece of bread, look no further! These two items are the perfect gifts (or to keep for yourself) for the tomato lovers in all of us. Enjoy tomato season! The Price: $6.00/salt, $10.00/tapenade.

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ou say tomato, I say I will surely strike you on the head with such force that you will be eating aforementioned fruit (do not dare to call it a vegetable!) through a straw for many months. Don’t get me wrong: I am a fan of a fine ripe tomato, just not of people who (a) say that dreadful song lyric at every opportunity, and (b) even less of people who think that it and potato have the letter “e” at the end. Or simply add an “s” should they end up in possession of more than one. I feel calmer now, and can continue dictating this week’s column, a tumescent glory full of squirting fun. Squirting? Did you not know that Cape May was the original home of the annual tomato-throwing festival, not that grim little place in Europe? We started it one night in Martini Beach, when I was drinking Bloody Marys with Amelia Earhart and Ernie Hemingway. Ernie was getting a little fresh, as we used to say in those days, and Amelia doused his ardor by casually throwing her Bloody Mary in his eyes. She had, though, forgotten (or not) that she had
an exceptionally spicy one, and so Ernie collapsed to the floor, shrieking in pain and rage. Well, Ernie was not one to forgive being made a fool of, and I knew he would come up slugging, and that Amelia would give him the thrashing of his life. So, to lighten the mood, I threw my own non-spicy Bloody Mary at Amelia, and she then cottoned on and emptied Ernie’s forgotten one over the comely bartender. Well, the bartender, always up for some high jinks, reciprocated and by the time Ernie lurched to his feet, red of eye, face and mood, tomato juice was everywhere.
Ernie, never one to know when enough was enough, ran down the stairs and seized crates of tomatoes from a parked fruit truck, and started hurling them at all and sundry with gay abandon. He did not care to remove them from the wooden crates, and so the joke was lost on many bruised and bloodied passersby, but Ernie seemed happy, and once he was clubbed senseless by a small mob, the remaining tomatoes were thrown sans their injurious packing, and a small, joyous, juicy festival was born. Of course, it being Cape May, a few years later someone took it too far and rented a surplus B52 bomber, and dumped 200,000lbs of tomatoes on the crowd during the festival. 200,000lbs of very fast-moving and partially frozen by the air, tomatoes. Well, once the ambulances and lawsuits were all done, that was the end of that, but really, it was, for Cape May, a relative success, with only a handful of casualties, and a local law that forbids the use of fruit and vegetables as munitions. Except cucumbers. But more of that later.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Rich Reinhart Junior Clamshell Pitching Tournament
T
he word ‘clam’ has been slang for money for years. One source suggests the term comes from the resemblance of the clam shell to the Peace Silver Dollar minted after World War I; another suggests it began as a 19th-century slur against cheapskates who had to pry money out of their wallets. Most sources say it goes back further. Shells were a form of currency, according to the National Bank of Belgium, because they were portable, durable, recognizable and hard to counterfeit. Unlike paper or fabric, shells don’t decay or get eaten by mice. Because they are uniform in size, merchants could trade the shells by weight, saving time, and travelers could carry strings of shells. Shells were used in China in the Neolithic era. In Africa and India, cowry shells competed with metal currency and were used up until the 19th century. Native Americans traded their decorative wampum, made from clamshells, with European settlers. Some people in Papua New Guinea reportedly still have old shells that they can
exchange for bank notes. And, of course, in Bedrock, when Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble schemed to get rich, they imagined buckets of clamshells. Clamshells are not as abundant on Cape May beaches as they once were, but we would still be rich if clamshells were used for money. Instead, we use them for fun. Pitching clamshells is a perfect game to play on the beach because you don’t have to bring any equipment with you. Lifeguards played the game in Cape May in the 1930s, and the game likely goes back to the nineteenth century. The rules vary, but generally, the
game is played like horseshoes. Make two circles about 25 feet apart. Dig a hole in the center of each circle. Lob your clamshell toward the hole and score points for landing in the hole, or closer than your opponent. Broken shells can be replaced. Land on top of your opponent’s shell and you steal his points, or not — be sure to agree on the rules before the shells start flying. The Rich Reinhart Junior Clamshell Pitching Tournament is a Cape May tradition, open to kids from six to seventeen. This year’s event is scheduled for Friday, September 1, at Windsor Beach, across from Congress Hall. Registration begins at 11am. There is no cost to participate. There are two age groups, ages 6 to 11 and ages 12 to 17. Trophies will be awarded to winners and runners-up in singles and doubles competition. Clamshells are provided, or competitors can bring their own. Beginners are welcome — instruction will be provided by the pros. For more information, call the City of Cape May at 609884-9565. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am terribly embarrassed. I attended our annual family picnic as I always do. A photographer comes and we use the photo for the family Christmas card. The problem is, the proofs arrived and I obviously failed to wear the proper undergarment. I’m afraid I had an Elaine in Seinfeld Christmas card moment. I revealed a little more than I intended. The problem is — what to do? I’m so embarrassed I don’t know if I have the nerve to tell my father that the photo needs to be retouched. Can I get someone else to do that? — Humiliated Dear Humiliated You need to get a sense of humor about this. Chances are someone has already told your father. The Answer Lady is surprised
Wise answers to perplexing questions
the photographer didn’t notice. Call the photographer yourself and sidestep dad. It’s an easy fix. And, no, you cannot get someone else to call the photographer. Simply say, “I had a wardrobe malfunction and I need you to fix it, please.” Laugh and simply shrug it off. Then, get thee to Lace Silhouettes and have them outfit you with a decent brassiere. And, girl, don’t leave home without it ever again. Dear Answer Lady I am interested in one of my work colleagues and I thought he was interested in
me. However, I find his behavior difficult to figure out. One day he’s flirting with me — the next day he dismisses me. He’s not mean, just distant. My only spark of relief is that I didn’t go out with him when he asked me to dinner. I only declined because I had a previous engagement. What if things had gotten more serious? I would feel horrible. What do I do now? — Confused Dear Confused There might be something going on in his life and you’re not at the point where he perhaps feels comfortable telling you. Or, this hot-cold modus operandi is how he operates. Best thing you can do is keep your distance until you sort it out. If he is a smooth operator, beware, because he will not change. You know what will cheer you up? A trip to Cape May Peanut Butter Company. Buy a jar of peanut butter and a bottle of jam and make yourself a PB&J sandwich. That’ll put a smile on your face and warm the cockles of your heart. More importantly, it will fortify you to make the right decision when the right man does come along.

The Movie Column
T
“Dunkirk” reviewed by Mike Chamberlain and Tom Sims
his film is getting critical acclaim and positive feedback from audiences as well. There may even be Oscar buzz. So what do Cape May Film Society members Mike and Tom feel about this historical narrative about the liberation of French and British troops during World War II? Their opinions differ. Mike: I know that this movie is getting rave reviews from just about every major critic out there, but let me explain why I didn’t think much of Dunkirk. First of all, the movie has almost ZERO character development. By the end of the movie I couldn’t tell you the name of a single person or anything about them. This makes connecting with or caring for anyone next to impossible. In fact, at one point there’s a scene where a group of British soldiers including the “main characters” are arguing about who to send out of their hiding spot to be shot by the Germans. They threaten one soldier that if he doesn’t go they will kill him and send someone else. It
Masterpiece... or totally underwhelming? instantly made all of the characters so completely unlikable that I wished the Germans had just gotten to them all. Secondly, with no major battle scenes, outside of a few small dogfights, it’s mostly about people waiting on a beach for boats to arrive and pick them up. Even the big fleet of private pleasure boats that come to rescue the soldiers seems underwhelming. With the exceptions of a few shots towards the end of the movie, you’d never know that more than one boat was ever sent because that’s all you see. This gives the feeling
that you are watching a lower budget indie movie instead of a big budget studio film. While well-made and shot, the movie has an almost documentary like feel to it instead of, say, a Saving Private Ryan type war movie. This does almost nothing to draw the viewer in and is what left me cold with the whole thing. Tom: Some of Mike’s points are valid. This film was sometimes downright confusing. But I found more to enjoy because I gave up early on the idea of this being a traditional or even linear storyline. Director Christopher Nolan urges us to feel this movie. So what I got was an allegory for life that was a cinematic feast for the eyes. What do I mean by allegory? The words spoken were sparse but memorable, tension was clear but jarring, the enemy was ruthless but faceless — all very similar to life. “All we did was survive,” one soldier says to an old man handing out blankets to returning troops. “That’s enough,” says the old man. And I said, “Amen.”

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hen you are on the beach, take a moment to admire a marvel of the natural world, the tiny sanderling that is playing tag with the waves. Sanderling breed in the Arctic and are on their way south. Coming from as far away as Ellesmere Island, traveling as far as Tierra del Fuego, few birds engage in such an extraordinary bi-annual commute. Because, what goes down, must go up. Think about it — a bird that could fit in your cup traveling to the ends of the earth, twice a year. Refueling on the beaches of Cape May. You may be the very first human these birds have ever seen. Polar bears, ringed seal, narwal, they know... but a creature that walks upright on two legs is not a common commodity where sanderling breed. These are birds built for speed and endurance. Equipped with long, scimitar-shaped wings, these tiny dynamos cleave a path through open sky. Fueled by a blood sugar content twice as rich as ours and fortified by layers of fat they will burn for fuel, they’re designed to go the distance.
Sanderlings are closely related to plovers, like the piping plover, which does breed locally on our beaches. But plovers feed by walking, stopping and picking, like robins. Sandpipers feed on the run. Why travel all the way to the Arctic to breed when there is plenty to eat right here? Because there’s more to eat in the Arctic in summer, when constant sunlight makes this insect-rich environment come alive. But it takes a special bird to exploit these riches. Not many are designed to vault thousands of
miles between refueling stops. So take a moment to marvel at this tiny, long-distance champion and realize that the time it spends in Cape May is essential to its survival. Sandy beaches are is what migrating sanderling depend upon during migration. Are they an endangered species? No. They are quite common along both sea coasts, but it’s a bad policy to get cavalier about these things. A relative, Eskimo curlew, was once so abundant they were shot for the market by the basketload. Now they are extinct. Another close relative, red knot, was just declared a threatened species. If you want to see knot, try Stone Harbor Point. A few winter there. While similar to sanderling in shape, nonbreeding knot are putty-colored and about twice the size of sanderling. Two centuries ago, another beach nesting plover bred here. Known as Wilson plover after famed ornithologist Alexander Wilson, this mostly southern species was discovered here, on the beach of South Cape May. Now extirpated as a breeder, only rarely does Wilson’s plover turn up locally.
