Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
f you are in the mood for good food, good company and you want to help the city eradicate a nuisance that has plagued Cape May’s harbor for more than two years, there’s an event just for you coming up next weekend. The Raise the Boat fundraiser will be held on Sunday, September 24 at, appropriately enough, Corinthian Yacht Club. The purpose is to raise the $25,000 it will likely take to bring the Nor’easter II up from the bottom of the harbor, where it has posed a potential menace to anyone from kayakers to jet ski users to boat owners. Normally, a boat owner would be responsible for the removal of an abandoned craft, but the Nor’easter owner died in an unrelated accident, which is why the 50-foot sport fishing boat has remained in the water. Mayor Chuck Lear is hopeful the event will be a success and that the city can quickly begin recovery efforts. “We have been wanting to avoid spending public money on this. If the fundraiser can provide the money needed, this is something we’ll get done as
soon as possible.” The fundraiser is being held by a group called Friends of Cape May Harbor, headed up by Jeff Elliott, pastor of the city’s Lutheran Church. “Children sail in these waters, kayakers from the Nature Center paddle through here and recreational boaters and jet skiers traverse these waters. It is only a matter of time before someone is killed or injured,” said Jeff. Ticket price for the event is $100, which includes a Caribbean buffet and music by
boat lover Carl Behrens and friends. There’s a cash bar at the yacht club and it all kicks off at 6pm. For more information and tickets, buy online at capemayforum.org and click on the Event Bee link and go to Friends of Cape May Harbor/Raise the Boat. Speaking of boats, had a blast on Captain Doug Ortlip’s Tiny Cruise Line, aboard the Fancy. Took the family from Scotland and we enjoyed a beautiful boat trip (three hours), along with drinks at Harbor View and the Crab House. It’s late in the season now, but definitely put it on your to-do list for next summer. Drove back into town the other day and once again inwardly congratulated myself for avoiding the traffic into Cape May by taking the West Cape May bridge... only to be stuck on Route 109 for about 20 minutes while the police allowed countless hundreds of bikers to head for the Garden State Parkway in an impressive display of midlife crisis at its loudest. Until next week... enjoy the last week of summer. It’s here until September 22.

ODMOTHERS
Dish Of The Week This week’s theme is beer. And as most beer drinkers know (or should know), you can pretty much drink beer with any type of food. Or if you prefer it by itself, that’s fine too. But we suggest coating your stomach with a little something before sloshing down your favorite brew. With that being said, if you want to combine your love of beer with food, why not just order a dish that is battered in beer? Seems like a simple solution, eh? That’s why this week we are sending you over to the The Blue Pig Tavern for fish and chips. They use their Blue Pig Tavern Ale to coat the day boat haddock before frying it up and serving. After one bite, you’ll be one hoppy customer.
BEER OF THE WEEK

Broadway & Sunset ~ 884-4543 Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
Fairvalley Vineyard Pinotage $9.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard
Brewed with a blend of hops that hit all the right notes and tickle you taste buds just right, then dry hopped with over a pound per barrel of more sexy hops, this Double IPA brings a wave of citrus, grapefruit and other exotic fruits to your face.
Medium bodied, earthy, well balanced tannins and great fruit. Pairs well with BBQ, poultry, beef and gamey meats.
What goes better with a shot of whisky than a nice cold beer to wash it down? That’s right, nothing. This classic combination is often called the boilermaker. Once only found in dive bars and local watering holes, the beer-and-shot duo is now hipper than ever. And who in Cape May has this hip combo on their cocktail menu? That’s right, folks, The Mad Batter. Their Blue Bar Shifter combines a Tug Boat (an 8oz pour of Carton Boat Beer) and a 1oz pour of Buffalo Trace Bourbon on the side. Belly up to their bar and enjoy live music this weekend after the Harvest Brew Fest. Beer, whisky, live music, friends. Enjoy. Repeat.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
like beer better than I like the people who drink it. Well, that’s not true, exactly: I like anyone who drinks their beer without feeling the need to smack their lips and engage in drivel about IPA, hops and yeast. The sole purpose of beer, as passed on from Ma D’Catur’s regrettable Scotch ancestors, is to deliver the drinker from a state of unhappy sobriety to mellow drunkenness, thence to vomiting and finally to collapse in the street whilst attempting to consume some unmentionable item that has been deep fried. I, of course, am not of that mindset, nor do I approve of that Scotch drinking tradition of “a pint and a nip”, whereby the barf ly orders a whisky alongside his beer, and drinks them both without taking so much as a breath between. That leads only to disaster, by way of extrovert and inappropriate affection, uncontrolled rage and some tears. I do not like change, and am puzzled and a little upset by this modern fascination with “small batch” and “craft” gin and
beer. In my day, beer came in colossal pressurized steel kegs, which as children we used to occasionally steal from the wagon when the horses paused to excrete on the street outside the Admiral Hotel. We would gleefully hide with our prize, and some lucky soul (never me, for reasons that will become clear in around 20 words or so) would be nominated to jam a stick in the valve, and to sup first. Of course, supping first meant having one’s mouth in the way when super-pressurized beer foam was

released at about 30,000 miles per hour. How we laughed, as one of our number ingested about 20 gallons in less than a second, and lost a handful of teeth. Now, I see bearded young men with baseball caps suggesting they worked in physically demanding trades that their soft hands give lie to, lining up to drink tiny glasses of beer so dark you might think it a jar of molasses, and to profess intimate appreciation of dozens of ingredients. I have, of course, strong opinions, too, on bearded men who are not in fact in the merchant navy or just returned from being lost in the wilderness for a year. It’s why I carry clippers at all times. In my day, the only ingredient in beer was … beer … and maybe, we thought, a little of some plant or others, and of course lots of bubbles. And once in a while, a pesky tax collector who found his way into a vat. Still, beer is beer, and so I salute you all. Silently. And unbearded. And ask you do the same. Except for Bearded Ladies. Of which more another time.

H
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, shopping by the sea
ere’s the thing about shopping in Cape May: if you immediately need something specific, like a blue tie or a red cardigan, you may be frustrated. If you don’t know what you need, you’re likely to be delighted. Cape May offers a variety of shops you won’t find in your hometown. Sure, you can find touristy items, but you can also find things like fine jewelry. On the Washington Street Mall, you’ll see fashionforward styles for young men and women, dressy clothes for little kids, workwear for grown ups, beachwear, home decor, and toys. There are personal care products to highlight your tan or mask your sunburn, sunglasses to suit every face and budget, and peanut butter to make the back-toschool routine a little tastier. There’s a bookstore where the staff is knowledgeable and eager to make a recommendation. You can find soap that smells like summer, or olive oil that reminds you of a special meal, or clever kitchen items to help you recreate that meal. Buy a postcard to pin on your
office bulletin board, or invest in a painting to remind you of summer. Pick up saltwater taffy for your coworkers, or ship shareable treats to a freshman in college - “Anyone want some candy?” is a great icebreaker. The Washington Street Mall will have Sidewalk Sales from Thursday, September 14 through Sunday, September 17. Expect to find real bargains — clothe your kids through the fall and winter with Cape May sweat shirts. Buy a couple of baggy tee shirts for the impromptu sleepovers that the school year brings. Invest in bigger rash guards to shield your little surfers next summer.
Take an eleven-year-old boy with $16 of his own, hard-earned money, and watch him learn the value of smart shopping. Because he waited for the sale, he can get the fidget spinner AND the shark tee shirt. Celebrate at an old-fashioned ice cream counter, and don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket for that car before you leave the mall. Off the mall, you can shop for a new surf board or a gift for a new baby. Find quality antiques to add to your collection, from giant, outdoor items to tiny coins and stamps. Wander over to the West End Garage or unusual gifts. For a young pen pal who has outgrown the stickers I used to send, I found a detailed osprey magnet, and now he is on the lookout for ospreys in Illinois. (Please let there be ospreys in Illinois.) An “aquaholic” dishtowel makes an excellent hostess gift for a fellow beach lover. Wrap it around a bottle of wine or a jar of local honey. And while you probably can find the blue tie in Cape May, don’t wait until the last minute. Next week: Fall Festivals

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My parents are getting older and I know my brother and I have a considerable inheritance coming our way. The thing is — they are healthy and I’m glad and grateful for that, but by the time I get my inheritance, I may be too old to enjoy it. I want to ask for my share now, but my brother thinks I am something below a snake. I think I’m just being practical. — Waiting in the Wings Dear Wings The Answer Lady thinks you are not the front end of a horse. That issue aside, your parents need to hire an estate planner who may very well recommend that annual stipends may prove to be a good tax break for them, and a windfall for you. Meanwhile, you need to make amends with your
Wise answers to perplexing questions
brother and force yourself to do something nice for your parents. By that, we mean something that benefits them and not you. Go to George’s and pick up dinner to go and then stop at Sunset Liquors and buy a nice bottle of wine to go with it. When everyone is shocked at your largesse, bask in the sun that comes from thinking of others first. Dear Answer Lady I graduated from college last year and have been having trouble finding a job. Eventually, I was forced to move in with my
parents. I make enough to get by but not enough to be on my own. Last week, they told me I have to leave and “find my own way.” “Sink or swim is the only way to learn how to survive,” my ex-marine father told me. I might add they want to turn my bedroom into a gym. Who does something like that to their own child? — Ejected Dear Ejected It would seem to the Answer Lady that your parents are of the impression that if they don’t make you stand on your own two feet, it will never happen. So embrace it. You surely must have a friend who is looking for a roommate and even if you don’t find work in your field — you still need to find a viable income to start the ball rolling. You do, after all, have a degree which should open some doors, even if they are not the doors you were hoping for. For inspiration, go to Cape Atlantic Book Company or Good Scents for books which will put you on a path to success and give you the confidence you need to face your new life. You might surprise yourself.

The Movie Column
T
wo comedians spend time on the open road eating fine foods, taking in the views, dealing with a host of personal issues, and otherwise just acting silly. Does that sound like the makings of a trilogy? Let’s see if Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon have the endurance to make work this installment in what has become a series. The Trip was a film originally released in 2010. I reviewed it here. Wow, have I been reviewing movies here that long? Talk about endurance! When I went to saw the original movie, I couldn’t stop laughing. These two were fresh, funny, and irreverent enough to hold your attention. In 2014, The Trip to Italy came out. I really enjoyed that film too, although maybe not as much as the first. They are both still very funny, and I guess I just didn’t have enough of them. That being only three years ago, the most recent trip just came out. This time the boys go to Spain. Surprise, surprise, the movie title is The Trip to Spain. Part of me still enjoys
“The Trip to Spain” reviewed by Tom Sims
The Trip to Spain feels like a road too far watching these two, but I can’t help but think some of the gags and even the formula may be played out. By formula, I mean that peek we get into their personal lives. Steve is the one who has trouble committing to a solid relationship while Rob is the one who is fully committed with two young children — even at his age. I’m not sure how much they built on those themes with this new movie, and I’m not sure how much you can. We like them, but do we care about them ? The impressions that they do are wear-
ing a little thin. That’s not good because much of the success of the first two films has been that very funny mimicking. Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins — we’ve seen them all before, and this one doesn’t really up the ante very much. There are new impressions of David Bowie and Mick Jagger that are pretty funny — I’m just not sure they’re worth the price of admission. There is one scene where Rob is doing a Roger Moore impression and Steve is getting frustrated that it’s going on too long. It’s how I felt for the better part of this movie unfortunately. And the whole “inside Hollywood” parts of this film are proving to go on a little too long is well. The sweeping vistas (this time aided by wonderful drone camera work) and the gorgeous food being prepared are still all wonderful elements of this franchise. So while it has been “a trip” from a humor standpoint, the third “leg” of this journey has made for a less than substantial adventure.

or the next three months, a parade of migrating birds of prey will be streaming over the hawk watch platform in Cape May State Park. The average seasonal total will be about 50,000. Not every seaside resort can boast a world-class natural spectacle but Cape May is so blessed. Most autumn visitors make a point of dropping by the hawk watch at some point in their stay. It’s an element in the Cape May experience as ingrained as a day at the beach, a stroll down the board walk, dinner at a favorite restaurant and a trip to the mall. You don’t need to be a birdwatcher and you can rely upon the skills of the seasonal interns to find hawks, eagles, falcons and other migrating birds for you. Arrive early (mid-morning) and there may even be loaner Swarovski binoculars available. Don’t be intimidated by your lack of hawkwatching experience and don’t be surprised by the number of accents on the platform. People from all over the planet come to Cape May specifically to see the hawk flight. As for etiquette, just take a seat near the
interns so you can take advantage of their wisdom. Do ask questions but not of the hawk counter who will be very busy, if you are lucky to be here on a good flight day. Children are welcome, but running on the platform is discouraged. There’s all that expensive equipment to contend with and the thump of feet on flooring causes vibration that diminishes image quality for those using high-power optics. Bringing cookies, pizza or pastry for the interns is a way of winning their hearts. Just
remember, Cape May Point State Park has a carry in, carry out policy. No trash cans. If you find yourself becoming captivated by hawkwatching, the Cape May Bird Observatory, carries an array of books on the subject. CMBO at 701 East Lake Drive also has the region’s best array of binoculars and spotting scope’s and the people behind the counter have your best interest in mind. Binoculars are also useful for watching migrating butterflies whose numbers are just peaking and whose migration is pushed by the same northwest winds that drive the hawks. Imagine your Facebook post featuring images of monarch butterfly-burdened goldenrod and eagles soaring past the lighthouse. Sure beats the picture of the omelette you snapped this morning. See great things and I’ll see you on the hawk watch. Hint for finding hawks when they are way up there: Turkey vultures are large, black and easy to spot. Smaller, pastel-shaded hawks often accompany them. Find the vulture, find the hawks.

MISSY is a chow chow who sadly came to the shelter after living with her family for 8 years. She is house trained and has polite manners. Missy enjoys playing with her toys and running in the yard, but she is quite content to take a leisurely walk. Missy loves to take car rides and explore new surroundings. Give her a second chance and adopt today!
RANGER is unclear whether he loves people or balls the most! He enjoys playing fetch and after will crawl into your lap for a snuggle. He would make a terrific walking, hiking or running partner. He is friendly with other animals and loves meeting new people! Ranger is a calm and happy dog. Adopt this wonderful pup today!
JAYE is very well mannered and enthusiastic about life. She loves meeting new people and is fond of children. She enjoys running in the yard, taking a leisurely walk or simply following kids while they play. Jaye is a pleasure to walk because she has excellent leash manners. Jaye would be a terrific companion in a loving family with or without children.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MUFASA is a long hair Maine coon mix who got his name from the Lion King because of his regal stature. He also loves being pet. Who wouldn’t want to pet his beautiful mane? And if you’re familiar with the movie, then you know that hakuna matata means no worries! Adopt Mufasa today and enjoy a carefree life with this special kitty.
OTIS is the puuurrfect kitty if you are looking for the bestest friend ever! He would love nothing more than to play, run around and have a good ole’ time. When anyone walks past, he meows, reaches his paw out and throws his toy mice around the cage. Come by the shelter and let Otis impress you. He will make any family very happy!
LEONARD is looking for an older companion such as him. Someone who likes long talks and is affectionate. Needs to be able to pet for hours while Leonard sleeps in your lap. Being an older fellow, his thyroid is a bit on the fritz. Very manageable with some cheap pills. Don’t let that deter you. Leonard’s love will more than make up for that!
