Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ake away the beach and there’s nothing to do in the fall here in Cape May. Was a ghost town this past weekend, right? Yeah, right. You could probably have thrown a stone in any direction and hit someone enjoying a festival — though, naturally, I don’t recommend such an approach. “There’s TOO much to do,” noted a retailer I spoke to on Saturday morning, referring to the fact that people wouldn’t be shopping with so many other things going on. On Saturday, there was the quirky fun of the annual Lima Bean Festival in Wilbraham Park, at the same time as Fall at the Farm was going on at Beach Plum Farm — if you haven’t been to one of these (every Saturday in October), you should do something about that. Then there was the first (and hopefully not last) Cape May Wine and Music Fest at Hawk Haven Winery, which is where I spent my Saturday. What a blast! It was like a mini Woodstock — minus the mud and the drugs and, okay, minus people like Jimi Hendrix, too. But there WAS great music from the likes of Red Baraat, Heather Gillis Band and our own
Bastard Sons of Captain Mey and Bluebone. Lying in the grass, surrounded by vines, listening to good tunes while eating food from the Red Store and Empanada Mama’s, drinking local wines and beers... no wonder close to 3,000 people turned up over the weekend. Huge kudos to Hawk Haven owners Todd and Kenna Wuerker, who both told me they had lost some sleep in the runup to the event, and also to Exit Zero Jazz Festival founder Michael Kline, who put together the music. “It was insane planning this event. There
were so many moving parts,” said Kenna. “We wanted to give our customers a great festival experience — great bands, the best wineries, great food and plenty of room to hang out on the grounds.” Nailed it, Wuerkers. So, will it become an annual event? “We are talking about it,” said Kenna. “Next year would definitely be easier.” Speaking of great music, the wonderful Wyclef Jean is one of nine guest speakers at TEDx Cape May, which is being held at Lower Cape May Regional High School this Sunday, October 15. That’s a serious coup. If you’re not familiar, Wyclef is a Haitian immigrant who found fame as the founder of the Fugues band and produced hits for Carlos Santana and Whitney Houston. He’s since become a leading advocate for change in Haiti. If you haven’t been to a TEDx event, founded by my good pal Norris Clark, it’s food for your brain, a totally inspiring and informative day out. For more information, see the program on pages 42-45 and visit TEDxcapepay.com.

Dish Of The Week If you were to ask the people of Cape May what their favorite season is at the beach, nine times out of 10 you’re going to hear fall. The crowds have (for the most part) gone home and the island we loaned out for the past four months has been given back. And it couldn’t be at a better time. The weather is perfect, the trees are changing color and menus around town are introducing new seasonal items like the sweet and savory butternut squash (same family as pumpkin). Treat yourself to the Autumn Butternut Squash Bisque with smoked trout, walnut aioli, petite greens at Peter Shields Inn. It’s the perfect way to squash your hunger and end a fall day in our beloved Cool Cape May.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
This amazingly full bodied red from the Priorat region of Spain over delivers with dark fruits, spicebox, all in a densely packed full body.
If you’re looking to spice up the fall season, we’ve got pumpkin just for you. It’s the highly anticipated Pumpkin Pie Martini from the Harbor View Restaurant. They combine Stoli Vanil vodka, RumChata and their housemade pumpkin spice syrup. Then garnished with a crunchy graham cracker rim, milky whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Oh my gourd, does that sound delicious or what? But remember, there is still booze in the glass. It IS a martini for crying out loud. So although you may feel tempted to keep ordering up, pace yourself. You don’t want to get too smashed!

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some pumpkin-appropriate products and found the answer from Coffee Tyme on Beach Avenue. The Item: Pumpkin spice coffee/latte. The Appeal: It’s that much anticipated time of the year when fall flavors kick in and pumpkin spice everything is the sudden craze. October just isn’t the same without a cup in hand to not only keep you warm with the dropping temps, but it tastes pretty darn good too. The Price: Stop in and see for yourself. Owners Jesse and Leigha Lambert will be happy to assist you.

The Old Fogey
O
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
h how I used to adore Halloween (or All Hallows’ Eve as I still call it)! We’d all dress formally, meet at the Admiral Hotel and toast the spirits of the undead with a fine malt, then to appease those vengeful dead we’d go out, find a score of shoebie heads and hollow them out with spoons, lighting them from inside with a candle and placing them on the stoops as an offering. All good clean fun, I say! Wait... what’s that you say? Oh aha yes! I meant pumpkins, obviously! Not shoebie heads! Ha! Who would actually use the skulls of visitors for such a ritual?! It’s preposterous! Fake news! As if we are barbarians who think to make blood offerings to the old gods to ensure prosperity and good harvests! Really, perish the thought! Now, did you know that the worldfamous pumpkin was in fact invented right here in Cape May? It was a botanical experiment gone awry: we had intended only to try and cross a tomato with an orange, to create a tomange, as the culmination of our short but

drink specials no cover!
rather interesting tomato hybrid line. We had the tompple, the tomana, the tomoccoli and the tomhuahua. Admittedly that last was a terrible mistake, and only happened when Wally Chung’s tiny dog chased a squirrel into our atomic fruit and vegemizer, and got tragically zapped. The result: a small, hairy red vegetable with a temper, was a hazard to every living thing and I had to fetch my flame thrower to sort it out. Sadly, Wally did not get his dog back but nor did any innocent bystanders get eaten by the tomhuahua so I consider it a success.
But the planned tomorange was not a success, until in a fit of rage I rammed one down on Ernie Hemingway’s big fat head, and the comic scary potential was revealed. Of course we overdid things, as is the Cape May way, and based on the theory that a basketball sized tomorange was fun, we devised one as big as a car. That caused the then mayor, Louis “King” Louis, to explode in outrage and his curses, delivered as they were by an orangutan (for such was he) sounded very much like “whad the pumfkin hell is that thing?” And so was the new name born. I wasn’t sorry: they’re easier to carve than heads (haha, oops!) and we do still have the small but thriving community of tomquirrels running free in our fair city, feasting on nuts, fruit and any drunken reveler foolish enough to pass out near the band stand. That said, I am less keen on carving pumpkins than I am firing them from the arbalest up on the mansion’s widow’s walk. Of course they are first stuffed with napalm: we like to emphasize the trick part rather than any treating, here in Cape May.

T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, firepits in the fall
here comes a moment in every teenager’s life when she turns to her mother and asks, “Was my entire childhood a lie?” (Spoiler: Yes. Yes, it was.) The occasion was my request that she take the marshmallow sticks from my hand and place them outside for our small guests to “find.” “We don’t need to do that,” she said. “There are always lots of… oh.” Parents do what it takes to make magic happen. Cape May is great for magical backyard fires, for example. Autumn in Cape May is like the Hollywood fall — there’s just a hint of chill in the air and color in the world. You can march along the walkways in the marsh, looking for monarch butterflies or migrating birds. It’s not too hot to climb the lighthouse or ride your bicycle to Sunset Beach. The few remaining bugs are enough to make you glad summer is over. And it’s the perfect time to use your backyard chiminea. Roasting marshmallows around a campfire is a magical thing for a child, but it’s work for the grownup magicians.
Plan ahead to make it easier. Take safety precautions — home fires caused almost $30 million dollars of property damage last year, so keep the hose handy, along with a bucket of water. Children have a knack flinging flaming marshmallows. Buy firewood, or, if you’re lucky, find someone to give it to you for free. Get more than you think you need. Buy a couple of bags of brand name marshmallows — generic marshmallows can really let you down. Buy at least six chocolate bars — not counting the one you hid in the kitchen for yourself for later — and one package of graham crackers. (Somehow,
the graham crackers never run out, and in a pinch, you can use saltines. Really.) Put all the ingredients on a table near the fire, light the fire, and THEN inform the children that you will be toasting marshmallows. Ask them to “find” some reasonably straight, reasonably clean sticks at least 30 inches long. Give them the tape measure. Sit by the fire by yourself for five minutes. When the kids return, let them toast the marshmallows and make their first s’more. Oddly, they won’t want more s’mores, but they will want to toast more marshmallows. Let them. You can collect them in a bowl to use as toppings for your after dinner coffee, or use them in a recipe, or consider them the price of a childhood memory and throw them out after the kids go to bed. Make life even easier by enjoying a fire at the Rusty Nail, which promises an indoor fireplace through the end of December; or try the fireplaces at the Brown Room, Fins or Peter Shields. Check the Willow Creek Winery schedule for their Firepit Fridays.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I are having an ongoing argument about our 20-something daughter who recently left an abusive relationship and had nowhere to live. It just so happened that one of our rental properties became available and we put her in there, but I feel she should pay a nominal amount of rent and my wife thinks she shouldn’t. What kind of lesson is that? My wife claims she doesn’t make enough money and will be forced to bring the boyfriend back. But I say she has never tried to get a job that would put her on her feet. Who’s right? — Parenting Never Ends Dear Parenting This is not an easy fix. Perhaps it is time for a sitdown with your daughter to go over a strategy. There are any number of options,
Wise answers to perplexing questions
among them the prospect that should your daughter get a job which provides her with a living wage, the money she earns would help her buy the house and thus secure a permanent home for herself. At the end of day, however, it is your daughter who has to map out her future, not you. She has to want independence enough to fight for it. Meanwhile, it sounds like the three of you could use an afternoon of wine tasting at Cape May Winery. Between the view and the vino, a little clarity might come through.
Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I are planning a vacation in November. We usually split the cost for these island trips but this year he wants to pick up the whole tab. I’m used to paying my own way. I don’t want to insult him but I don’t like feeling obligated either or, more importantly, of putting a financial burden on him. How do I handle this? — Reluctant Recipient Dear Reluctant The Answer Lady’s eyes are rolling back in her head. Step back and enjoy the bloody gift which he obviously wants to give you because — and stand back while the Answer Lady puts it out there — he mostly likely LOVES you and wants to do something nice for you, which you — in return – will do for him when the appropriate moment comes. This is what we call the give-and-take of a relationship. Go over to Caroline’s Boutique and buy something sexy for the trip and dinner at a romantic restaurant, which you can pay for. The Answer Lady is quite sure this and the inspiration of an island vacation will help you find other ways to repay him.

The Movie Column
Y
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”
ou can’t force quirky. It’s something that just happens. A good quirky movie is fun, thrilling, goofy, and action-packed — all at once. Take the first Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014). Go ahead and try to put your finger on its quirkiness. Good luck describing why it worked. But I’ll try. This original film was a mix of Kill Bill, the Quentin Tarantino series, and the original 1960s Batman TV show — sort of cartoonish and gruesome almost simultaneously. It could be silly on one hand and satirical on the other. Somehow throughout all it was fun. Three years later, we have Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The doomsday evil is the same. This time, instead of Samuel L. Jackson as the villain, we have Julianne Moore. She plays the mastermind behind the world’s largest drug cartel and has poisoned all the drugs people are using. It’s a mass epidemic. Millions will die. Only she holds the antidote and with one swift keystroke, she can send it out to the world via
The Kingsman sequel is a bit of a disappointment drones and save the day. Her only demand: she wants the entire US to legalize drugs. As far as premises go, this one walks the border of silly and stupid. But let’s go with it. What the heck, the last movie didn’t exactly have such a plausible evil plot either. Enter our hero, Eggsy (played by Taron Egerton). No spoiler here: Colin Firth returns as super spy Harry Hart. Wait… didn’t he die in the first film? Well, apparently not. This is part sci fi fantasy after all.
And so does the film ever stop walking the border to fall into a pool of stupid? Well, I didn’t stand and leave the theater until the end credits… so I guess the answer is no. But it came too close. When I reviewed the original film, I clearly recall going on in this column about a church congregation that was pretty much wiped out by Harry. It was a racist, hateful church, and you had to cheer for our hero as he went about killing everybody. You just don’t do that unless the film is sufficiently quirky. In this film there was no moment to cheer. You just didn’t feel that same animosity or sense of justice. I didn’t feel as engaged with the new (or, for that matter, recurring) characters. And there was a string of superstar celebrities in this film. But it was too much. Still, I can’t overly criticize this sequel. They were great action sequences, and it was fun in certain parts. But there were clichés, and I’m not so sure there is room for cliché and quirky in the same

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
n October, the center of activity in Cape May is the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. Every day is a gathering of the clan and when winds are blowing northwest, spirits run high. It can be very tribal with quips traded and friendships renewed and intimidating for firsttime visitors. Don’t be. The squad of seasonal interpreters are there to show you the wonders of one of the planet’s greatest migratory spectacles. In 10 minutes time, with half a hundred sharp-shinned hawks under your belt and sightings of half a dozen peregrine falcons etched in memory, you are already a veteran. I’ve been a beginning hawk watcher since 1976 and learn something new every time I set foot on the platform. Falcon flights are often exceptional when it’s raining and winds are off the ocean. Peregrines conduct much of their migration offshore. An easterly wind ferries them to Cape May. Jumping off Long Island at first light, these long distance migrants reach Cape May by midday and continue to be seen until dusk. Merlins, too, are afternoon birds
and untroubled by dirty weather. So, hawk watching doesn’t mean getting up at sunrise. It’s a very civilized form of bird watching. Late afternoon is prime viewing time. On good flights, multiple birds may be seen in the air at once, chasing each other or snatching dragonflies out of mid-air. While the scopes offer supernatural intimacy, the stash of loaner binoculars means you won’t have to stand in line. Yes, you’ll have to give the instruments back, that’s the nature of a loan. If you are having difficulty finding
birds through your binoculars, ask the seasonal interns for help. But the way this works is, keep your eye on the birdy, then raise the binoculars to your eyes until they fall in line with you and your target, then spin the focus wheel until the image is sharp. Hint to beginners: lower magnification like eight power (or 8x) is more user-friendly than high magnification. Get to the platform early and claim a Swarovski 8x32 EL. It’s so facile, you’ll hardly know you are using binoculars. And the image? WOW squared. Expensive? Sure, if you are buying them, but a look through the loaners on the platform is free. And the view through a Swarovski spotting scope? WOW to infinity. Focus it on the head of a hooded merganser or Eurasian wigeon and the image will blow you back to a brain stem. It’s what premium optics do and it will make a birder out of anyone. Next stop? Northwood Center for binoculars and a bird field guide. It’s on your way out of Cape May Point. Right off Lighthouse Avenue. Tell them Seymore sent you.
