EXIT ZERO A sprightly sheet full of the sprays of the old ocean October 4, 2018 Vol. 16, No. 35 America’s Original Seaside Resort
Walk Like A Bavarian
Around 9pm At The Rusty Nail Bar And Grill P12-18
Around 8pm At Harry’s Ocean Bar And Grille P48-57
Above: Mad Batter Crew Kaylee, Taylor, Michael, Anders, Nora, Kyle, Alfonso. Left: Tracy, Jacci, Bree, Aimee, Emily, Karin. Last Saturday, everyone’s favorite Bavarian tradition made its way to Cape May as the annual Oktoberfest festival took over Jackson Street and Carpenter Lane. The heart of town was transformed into a German promenade with authentic music and food. And, as the cherry on top of the pie (frothy head on top of the beer?), the weather was picture perfect. Even some well-behaved dogs made the party… though we didn’t see any who were wearing dirndls — which, we have to say, was a huge disappointment that only copius amounts of wienerschnitzel can fix.

The Big Exit Zero Information Page
Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. What item was named the “food hit of the Century of Progress” at the 1934 World’s Fair in Chicago?
The doughnut, of course. Or “donut,” we suppose, if you’re a savage. Over 10 billion are made in the US per year.

Merlin may look like the rugby players of the bird world — small but stocky with square heads — but they’re very graceful when they expertly snap the cervical membrane of other birds midair… even full-grown eagles! Look for them this fall!
The 62-acre Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May was launched in 2007 as a way to provide local, clean produce for the Cape Resorts restaurants. What started as a modest operation has grown to include more than 100 crops. And the concept of the farm has expanded, too. Since the space opened to the public in 2009, it’s become a community hub and a serene place for connecting with nature and one another.. usually over a meal of farm-fresh food and drink.
ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — answer is on page 20. There are two fathers and two sons. They walk into a candy store and each buys a candy bar for 50 cents. The total for all of the candy bars was $1.50. How is that posibble?

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Holle Boone from the C-View is up. How long have you been bartending? I’ve been at the C-View for 22 years. Favorite drink to serve? I make a great margarita. But anything with vodka is a safe bet. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask for water. They ask for it, but never drink it! Biggest tip you ever received? $200 from one guy because I peeled his peel-and-eat shrimp for him in the kitchen.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
f the media has taught me anything this past week, it’s that I can never, ever run for public office... I would like to cordially invite you to Cabanas this Sunday night at 7pm for Billy Joel Night with The Strangers. By now you know I love The Beatles, but what you may not know is that I love Billy just as much, if not more. For whatever reason, probably pure awesomeness, his music connected with me in my younger days and I’ve remained a super-fan ever since. At one point I knew every lyric to every song by heart. Of course, I forget half of them now, even with my iPad in front of me, but I feel no greater joy than being able to sing songs like “Get it Right the First Time” or “Everybody Loves You Now” in front of my great band in front of a great audience. I misspent most of my youth defending my love of his music (mostly from Elton John people who are just the worst people… take a vacation, Elton, yeesh…) so it’s been nice to see him become more critically embraced recently. To me, he is one of the great American composers and we hope
you’ll come start the fire with us as we celebrate his music at 7 o’clock on a Sunday. I was remiss last week in not wishing happy anniversary to my wife Cathrine who has so far stuck around for 18 years (the over/ under was 14.5, so we beat the spread). She’s a good wife, a great mom and a terrible boss. Here’s to 18 more, assuming I live that long, which, let’s face it, is about 50/50 at this point. Was a relatively sedate week here at Undertow Central. No new bands making their world debuts to sparse crowds, no rainsoaked Beatles tributes splashing through the

night. Just a regular old week. Which means, uh, there’s not much to talk about. But let’s try, anyway! Erinn Delong (two Ns, how pretentious) made her semi-annual visit to Terry O’ke at Rio Station on Friday. Husband Joe surprised her with a night out for her birthday (I think, it may have been just a regular surprise, I’m not good at remembering stuff) after which I tortured her by making her sing about 13 songs. One of them was the beautiful “Solo Saxophone” from Miss Saigon, which she let me sing with her, which instantly transported me back to the early 90s when I stayed up nights thinking, “Jonathan Pryce is playing a Vietnamese pimp?” While on the topic of the thea-tah, congratulations are in order for my eldest son, Owen, for nabbing the lead male role in Taming of the Shrew at Cape May Regional High School. For a kid who had ZERO interest in performing a scant three years ago, he’s sure come a long way, with scene-stealing turns in Damn Yankees and Shrek, along with strong showings in Dracula, 12 Angry Men, Charley’s

Aunt and The Drowsy Chaperone. Yep, the poor bastard is doomed to follow in his father’s footsteps. I mean, uh, CONGRATULATIONS, OWEN! Sunday was our penultimate (next-to-last) TNT performance at the Rusty Nail. Tim Joyce and I are there this coming Monday, then we switch over to The Brown Room alternating Sundays (starting the 14th) for the rest of the year. Half the fun of these gigs is, obviously, singing songs for people who appear to really enjoy them. The other half comes from interacting with the crowd, when Tim and I become something of a vaudeville act, Tim as Abbott to my Costello. (Insert fat joke here.) Or Crosby to my Hope. Up next: The Road to Unemployment. Second best singer in town Maddie Hogan made an appearance at the Nail and, after popping up on stage with us for a couple of tunes (including a “Give Me One Reason/No Diggity” mash-up that had to be heard to be believed), implored me to put her in this week’s column. So… here you go, Maddie. She’s also in the process of writing and recording with her new band, which she says is going to be better than The Who, The Rolling Stones and Janis Joplin all rolled up into one, and that Lennon and McCartney can eat it. (Okay, I made up that last part. But she’s pretty excited about the project and I can’t wait to hear it.) It was so weird singing without a sore throat this week. So weird I almost couldn’t sing at all! After a month or two of 5-6 gigs a week, I had a full five days of vocal rest before Sunday and was singing like Nuke Laloosh. Lots of power, no control. I may have even hit the mascot in the on deck circle. (The obscure references are really flying this week.) In the immortal words of Crash Davis: Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains, According to local chanteuse Debra Donahue, it’s all my fault. For years she’d been a closet shower singer. (Note to self: invent closet shower.) But
October 4, 2018 it wasn’t until she began frequenting Terry O’ke shows at the Ugly Mug way back in 2005 that she found the courage to sing in public. Hard to believe one of the best female singers in town was once a shrinking violet, right? Or, as Debra might say, unpossible such a lady warbler was feared of tweeting a tune. She’s fancy with the word-saying. I had the rare pleasure of seeing Bob Riper and Claire Reeves not once, but twice in the last week. First at Rio Station Terry O’ke (where Claire serenaded us with “Leaving on a Jet Plane) and again at Beatles Night last Sunday where they danced like no one was watching. Thanks for your support of local live music. Had a rare Saturday night to myself last weekend so I headed out to the movies to see A Simple Favor, starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick. Why didn’t I, a manly man and sci-fi nerd, go see The Predator? Honestly, I don’t know, which makes me a little nervous. But be that as it may, Favor started strong, as a sort-of gender-swapped Strangers On a Train, before devolving into… I don’t know what. A murder-comedy? Is that a thing? Anyway, I started to wonder why it went so wrong until I remembered it was directed by Paul Fieg, the man who killed Ghostbusters. No, I don’t care that it was a female-led remake of a beloved 80s classic. I care that it was painfully unfunny and stupid. Farts aren’t funny. Lady farts are exponentially less so. How is it I went 20 years without Taco Bell but now I can’t go more than two weeks? If you’re keeping score at home, the Taco Bell became a drive-thru pizza place then a family-owned Mexican place then a pizza place again then was knocked down and turned into a Taco Bell. The Rio Grande Circle of Life. Now if you don’t mind, I’m off to watch some TV. No spoilers please. I haven’t watched The McCain Funeral all week and I can’t wait to see what happens. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have had enough of dog poop! The thought came to me this very morning, when I was heading along Beach at a fast clip, to catch Young Albert (the tiny hound had set off in pursuit of a late Shoebie, and I expected him as always to tree his quarry near the bandstand), when I stepped on a steaming mound of the damned stuff and fell spectacularly. By spectacularly, I mean, I executed a 360-degree arc and landed on my feet again. But — and I will not go into too much detail here as I know many of you will be eating, or be of weak constitution. Suffice to say, the texture of the offending doo was soft tending to liquid and my high speed, leather-soled brogue acted like a lever, spraying the stuff far and wide. Me, and a handful of passersby plus an assortment of cars and a shopfront, were all speckled in the stuff. At best, it looked like freckles, which is actually worse than the real reason I was dotted all over. So I have decided to re-activate an old law. Worry not: We are not about to ban dogs. Why, that would be inhumane and Young
Albert is, despite what he may think, a canine. I think, too, the editor of this very rag was raised by a pack of wild dogs. Or perhaps it was wolves. Or guinea pigs. I forget, as he told the story after a few single malts and is hard to understand at the best of times. No, the dogs are fine, but the poop is as of today the legal responsibility of the dog owner. And I do not mean that you can half-heartedly scoop a little of the mess up into a tiny (and alarmingly translucent) bag and then sneak it into someone’s garbage
can. No, I mean every poop must be logged and taken home, to be used in one of a small number of approved ways. First, there is the option to press it into tiny bricks and to build something with it. A pergola, maybe, or a folly. I advise against a barbecue oven, unless you like heady aromas. Second, you can construct an arbalest and once you have had its range tested and approved, you will be permitted to fire the molded spheres of poop at Ocean City. Third, you can support our local mail system and post the carefully sealed packets far and wide, with no return address. I suggest you label them “organic fertilizer” rather than “surplus poop”. Fourth, we are looking to build a new and updated version of the beloved Concrete Ship that lies off the Point. The new vessel — tentatively named SS Toley — will require three million pressed bricks for construction and, once done, will be launched with great fanfare and hopefully an offshore wind. We are looking for crew members, too, so if you have sea legs and no sense of smell, do apply here.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the scarecrow tradition
on’t decry the commercialism of Halloween. Sure, it’s a bi-gmoney holiday in modern times, but that’s nothing new. Halloween is a tradition rooted in transaction. The holiday began with bribes. Harvest festivals, like Samhain, the precursor to Halloween, mark the end of the “light” part of the year. Visitors from the underworld were said to walk the earth, seeking bodies to steal. Pagans wore masks or costumes to disguise themselves as harmful spirits, to trick the actual spirits into leaving them alone. They also left food and drink on the doorstep so that demons wouldn’t come into the house. Later, Christians adapted the tradition, encouraging peasants to go door to door seeking “soul cakes” in exchange for prayers to release relatives from purgatory. Those who failed to provide the cakes risked vandalism along with the damnation of their ancestors’ souls. These visitors also wore costumes, probably because you don’t want your neighbors to recognize you as you say, “Treat me to a cake, or I will trick you with damna-
tion and property crimes.” Scarecrows are another transactional part of the harvest tradition. The tradition of hanging a figure in a field comes from farmers’ attempts to keep birds at bay. Since this technique is rarely effective unless you move the scarecrow around a lot, some historians say the tradition began in the days of human sacrifice, when a community would offer up one person’s life in exchange for a rich harvest. Some cultures shaped their scarecrows to honor deities, seeking blessings for their fields. The Greeks used Aphrodite’s son Pri-
apus as a scarecrow model, because his physique made him a good symbol of fertility. The Japanese hung noisemakers on their kakashi scarecrows. Early Egyptians draped nets over their scarecrows so that the calls of distressed birds would scare away other birds, and the snared birds could be eaten by the farmers. The scarecrows at the Physick Estate are designed to attract visitors. From October 12-31, the grounds will be decorated with a variety of scarecrows “from the ghoulishly gruesome to the foolishly funny.” The scarecrows are created by local schools, charities, businesses and individuals and you can vote for your favorite -— winners can earn cash or a pizza party. Pick up your ballot at the Carriage House. Also, on October 12, learn more about Halloween traditions with a lecture and workshop titled, “A Short History of Halloween.” Held from 2-4pm at Cape May Methodist Church Hall, this presentation will focus on the Victorian tradition of postcards and greeting cards. After the lecture, attendees will create harvest-themed cards. Visit capemaymac.org for tickets.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I began a phone relationship with a man I met through Facebook friends. We are in the same field and have much in common. He lives in Florida and I live in Cape May. I love it. I don’t have to dress up, wear make-up or pretend to be nice. He doesn’t have to pay for dinner. Sometimes I think he gets scared by the intensity of the relationship because I don’t hear from him for several days. But, then he’s back. My friends are concerned that I am getting involved with a fantasy not a real person and that we should be making plans to meet but I’m not sure that’s wise. He is in his 60s and never married. I have been alone for 10 years. We’re both happy the way thinga are. Isn’t that enough? — Long Distance Rendezvous
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Rendezvous Yes, of course it’s enough. He is clearly a noncommittal man and this is probably as good as it will get with him, and you seem quite content with that. BUT, why not shake it up a bit? Go to Kaleidoscope, buy yourself a pretty dress, put on some makeup, get a bottle of champagne from Sunset Liquors. Pour two glasses and take a selfie and send it to him. Date Night. Dear Answer Lady I have a friend who is diagnosed as a
bi-polar personality who refuses to take her meds, yet constantly commits to attending functions with me only to either not show up at all or to leave abruptly. She is driving me crazy. I yell at her all the time to take her meds. She claims she does, but I can tell she does not. How can I help her? — Beside Myself Dear Beside You can help, just by being kind. Yelling is counterproductive. You know her history, so why is that you expect her to be something she is no longer capable of being? Unless you are living with her or on the premises to make sure she takes her meds, there is no solution. You should, however, get in touch with a relative who is in a position to get her assistance and maybe help her get back on track. To ease your own angst and replenish your chi, Cape May Day Spa offers a Mid-Week Slowdown. A massage and foot rub won’t change the circumstances — but it WILL allow you to cope with them better.

Veronica Scutaro reviews “The Shuck” at Cape May Stage
he date is August 9, 1974, and the front pages are filled with the news: President Nixon resigns. While the nation is riveted to the news, Constance, an oyster boat captain played by Kim Zimmer, grapples with resigning herself to the death of her son. The Shuck is a world premiere production written by local award-winning playwright Shawn Fisher and directed by Roy Steinberg for Cape May Stage. It’s a gripping story of family drama during a time of national turmoil. Constance’s main support system and seemingly only friend, Anthony, played by Bill Tatum, brings her his gentle affection as she struggles with anger, grief and resignation. When Constance’s daughter, Gail, played by Kyra Adams, shows up on the scene, pregnant, after finding out about her brother’s death, Constance must face the truth about her son. Her denial of his essence, the “rot” of him, can not be sustained in the bright light of Gail’s telling of the truth she remembers. Kim Zimmer and Kyra Adams bring to
The Shuck is showing at Cape May Stage the stage all the pain, the anguish and the hope of an estranged mother and daughter getting down and dirty to find the love they have neglected. Bill Tatum’s Anthony is played with gentle kindness. His caring and desire to make things right is like an anchor for the women in this emotional hurricane. This play pulls the viewer into a world most people never experience, living a life of hiding emotionally and physically. Gail is the catalyst for a new day for Constance. It has twists and turns, unexpected secrets and revelations. It is complicated, just like the
characters and human relationships. The music and scenery perfectly compliment the action. The set has everything an old boat, rotting at its berth, should have: sea, salt and wind weather wood, lobster traps and ropes. The music brings back the feeling of August, 1974. Zimmer is best known for her portrayal of Reva Shayne on the daytime drama Guiding Light, where she received four Lead Actress Emmys. Tatum previously has appeared at Cape May Stage in Moon Over Buffalo and Mary, Mary. Adams is a recent graduate from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Cape May local. See this play and experience 1974 as a marker in the time of the nation and in the time of a family trying to rebuild itself from the ashes. The show at Cape May Stage runs Wednesday-Saturday at 7:30pm and Saturday and Sunday at 3:00pm and closes November 9. For more information on any performance, call the box office at 609-7708311 or visit the website at www.capemaystage.org.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he question of birds and where they go when it rains came up the other day. My answer focused upon the water-shedding properties of feathers, which are considerable, giving rise to the familiar expression “like water off a duck’s back.” Yesterday, while driving north on the Parkway, I noticed a couple dozen great egrets at the pond between mile markers two and three. What caught my eye was the arrangement. All the birds were on the west and south side of the thicket, with their backs to the wind and rain. Nestled among the egrets was a single osprey. As a bird designed for total immersion, there are few species more waterproof than osprey. But the rain was heavy enough for even it to sit out the storm. I, too, was at that very moment in the process of drying out, a chore mandated by my decision to go ahead with our Monday morning birding trip through the South Cape May Meadows, despite the rain. Nobody minded that the walk ended early and except for waterfowl and gulls, the only birds I recall
were three merlins and one peregrine. Heralding from the Arctic, a day of rain is about average for peregrines. What they are fleeing in autumn isn’t rain but impending snow. Day or night, rain or no, peregrines are flying south in September and October. Adult male birds are essentially pelagic, jumping off Greenland and flying out over the Atlantic until they feel the touch of tropical sun on their backs. Immature peregrines bump and grind their way down the coast, heading offshore
then thinking better of it and returning to land. In the days ahead, scores of peregrines will be counted in Cape May. While the tally will be mostly immature birds, a strong on-shore wing will ferry large numbers of adults within view of the hawk watch platform. The sighting of any peregrine, young or old, is cause for excitement. It is not unheard of to have peregrines pass so close to the hawk watch that you can almost smell the ptarmigan on their breath. Most songbirds simply sit out heavy rain. Being small, they can find little micro-climates that shield them from the droplets. A leaf cluster here, a sturdy branch there, and birds stay out of the elements. In the nest, before their feathered armor was complete, nestlings were protected from inclement weather by brooding adults who shielded their down-covered offspring with their bodies. But that was then and this is now. Fully fledged juvenile birds are on their own by the time they reach Cape May, facing down the rain with superb rain gear and the intelligent utilization of natural cover.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
DALI came to the shelter with her sister Lilly. They had a great home but their owner was moved into a home and could no longer take care of them. Dali is an indoor kitty and very sweet. Although she is making lots of new friends at the shelter, Dali is longing for a real home. Someone special, like you, to scoop her up and take her home. Adopt today!
NEWMAN was brought into the shelter in such a rough condition. It’s the reason why his tail is so short. Newman has seen some rough winters, but last winter was the worst. And then he was finally found! Warm beds and toys and cuddles. So many cuddles! Now all Newman needs is a nice family to show him what love is like! Could this be you? Adopt!
GIDGET was a homeless mother who was found on the streets begging for food to feed her babies. She was scooped up and taken to the shelter and was worried sick for days without her kittens and noone to care for them. Finally, a nice man brought Gidget’s babies to her and they have all been adopted. Now it’s mommy’s turn. Adopt today!
