The Big Exit Zero Information Page

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Who’s the unluckiest Oscarnominated actor? Peter O’Toole got eight Oscar nominations over four decades, but never won. Richard Burton is next, with seven nominations. Leo Di Caprio is sitting at five snubs... and counting.

HOW TO... ORDER A PHOTO

REQUEST A PHOTOGRAPHER

«Call us on 609-770-8479 or order online at ezstore.us. Either way, you need to tell us on which date the photo appeared, and on which page. Orders must be prepaid.

SUBSCRIBE TO COLOR ISSUES

«Although we no longer offer subscriptions to the weekly issue, you can still subscribe to our three color issues. Call 609-770-8479 or visit ezstore.us. The cost is $25.

«Email info@exitzero.us and write PHOTO REQUEST in the subject line. Or call 609-770-8479. Tell us the date of the event and how many people are expected. There is no charge.

SEND A VACATION PHOTO

«We love pictures of our magazine on vacation. Email your photos and details to info@exitzero.us and write EZ ON VACATION in the subject line. Do NOT send hard copies. They don’t print well.

READ US ONLINE

«You can read our issues online, courtesy of our virtual magazine reader. Just visit our website, exitzero.us, and click where it says THIS WEEK’S ISSUE. Enjoy!

SOME INTERESTING TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Celebrity Sightings

On The Wild Side

Local Landmark

You know her as the former queen of daytime TV (although once a queen, always a queen, amiright?). But Oprah Winfrey is also the queen of Cape May. In June, 2014, she Instagrammed a photo of herself at the Blue Pig Tavern.

Spotted any bufflehead ducks recently? Then hang in Cape May harbor this time of year. Their comically large heads make them easy to spot. Another key to ID? They run for a short way on the surface of the water before liftoff... really!

The Cape May Lighthouse, built in 1859, has attracted more than 2.5 million visitors since it opened to the public in 1988. Located in Cape May Point State Park, it is 157 feet and six inches tall, and there are 199 steps to the top. Fun fact: It used to be powered with whale oil. Today, the lighthouse — a key site on the NJ Coastal Heritage Trail — is managed by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, and it’s a VERY popular spot for lovebirds... and watching birds.

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN AN EDITOR? IT’S RIDDLE TIME! «Here is this week’s riddle — we’re ashamed to say this one stumped us. Can you do better? Answer is on page 18. A boy and his father are in a car crash. The father dies and the boy is rushed to Cape Regional. The surgeon sees the boy and says, “I cannot operate on him, he is my son.” Who is the surgeon?

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Catherine Wilson from Lucky Bones is up. How long have you been bartending? Four years. Favorite drink to make? The Cape May Mule. We took a classic drink made with vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer and gave it a beach town twist by adding our own locally grown Beach plums. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers wave at you or tap on the bar for a drink! Biggest tip you ever received? $100.

BEER OF THE WEEK

Cape May Brewing Co Misty Dawn Saison Paired with an expressive Belgian yeast strain, this is a distinctively unique beer with notes of grapefruit zest, earthiness, and a dry, spicy finish — thanks in part to a hefty addition of Noble Saaz hops to round things out.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Sunset Liquors Broadside - $14.99 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon Bright red plum fruit is underscored by strong herbal aromas. It’s fruity on the palate, with a green pepper edge that grows minty as it approaches the finish. A great, refreshing style of Cabernet for barbecues.

Seafood Report Ever wonder the best time is to eat an oyster or a crab? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. This week, after chatting with several local fishermen, we were informed they are catching black sea bass. Did you know that they are highly sought after and thus can be overfished?

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The vibe: Between the fish tanks, the blue LED-lit glass bar and the wave-patterned walls complete with authentic portholes, the place has an Atlantis sort of feel. NO surprise that it’s cool in here... the designer of the space, Raymond Haldeman, is among the nation’s best restaurant and bar designers. The server: Simba. Best name ever? Yes, yes it is. Was he born around the same time The Lion King movie came out? Why yes, yes he was. The drinks: Mike ordered a Purple Monkey Dishwasher, or as he put it, “a real beer for once.” Katie opted for a Magic Hat #9. Jack drank a Bourbon Brown Ale from Glasstown Brewery. And Diane got a Codder Fish cocktail — cranberry vodka, club soda and a splash of lemonade — because it’s only 85 calories. (Well, 170. She ordered two and then felt tipsy later on while speaking with world-renowned birder, Richard Crossley — sorry, Richard!) The food: Mike panic-ordered (because Jack is impatient and makes everyone order as fast as possible) and ended up with two shrimp dishes: the Fins buffalo shrimp starter and the Mediterranean shrimp wrap. Oh well — there are worse things than an excess of shrimp. Diane opted for a lobster roll. Jack went for the Fins wings and a burger with avocado (more on that later), jalapeno, cheese, mushrooms and egg. “It’s one of the best burgers in town,” he said. Kate ordered the sweet-and-spicy shrimp tacos. The conversation: Shop talk aside, we debated what the font used for the title of Dirty Dancing looks like. It got heated. Then we talked about Jack’s tee-shirt, which is bright green and depicts an avocado bowling with its own pit... turns out it’s not just millenials who are obsessed with the fruit. Also, what the heck is the song “Hotel California” about? According to Mike and Katie, a real house in LA where rich people went to do drugs. According to Diane, it’s a metaphor for hell. Some people might say potato-potahtoe. The takeaway: Life is short, order all the fixins. But days are long, so maybe stick to one drink at lunch.

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week

Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Richard Dalla Palu, a retiree from Town Bank on his way to buy a beach tag. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? Aleksey Moryakov! The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

am thinking of purchasing a “camera”. I am fond of recording local sights and occasions, most notably those involving myself. I have traditionally done this by engaging the services of a local artist and having him or her accompany me wherever I go, ready for my “record for posterity!” command, at which point I freeze and hold the pose for up to an hour, for preliminary sketches to be made. The downside of all of this is that action scenes — such as Young Albert chasing and consuming a stray Shoebie — tend to be a blur. I did once employ a chap who called himself a “caricaturist” and carried a little easel and charcoal sticks. I had high hopes, then saw his first effort and was outraged! I had huge ears, mean little eyes and a florid complexion that suggested a rather more liberal port intake than the modest single bottle I consume daily! At one stage an upstart came through with a device that looked like a folding suitcase. He called it “photographic apparatus”. I foolishly agreed to have my image “recorded”, and the chap brought out a long tray on a

handle that he held up and said “smile!” Well, no sooner had my trademark pearly grin been applied than he ignited a large quantity of powder on the tray. The explosion blew my powdered wig off and dislodged several of my ivory teeth! He was driven from the city with harsh words and a stout stick, I assure you! Of late I have been dictating my thoughts as I wander to my manservant, Kitchener, who then edits them and passes the best on to a local artiste, who paints huge canvases with me front and center, offering advice and

encouragement to you all. This does, though, fail to capture the immediacy of my genius. So imagine my surprise and curiosity when one of my insufferable legion of descendants was visiting and suggested I get a “cellphone” and take “cell-phies”. I am not one for taking advice from people based only on their inexperience of life, and this young maroon generally irritates me hugely. But he did give me a tiny sliver of glass and steel that I had assumed was his makeup compact nd showed me how, with the press of a button that is not really a button, I could record my good self in a variety of poses and situations. I was much taken and “recorded” 3,000 such images in quick succession, ignoring his plaintive cries of “you’re using up the memory,” and “you’re deleting my pictures!” I gave him a shilling and told him to get me one such device, and to keep the change. Now all I need is some method of sharing them with the world, perhaps one that can be accessed by friends and family, on those little cell devices. I think I shall call this The D’Catur Book and make my millions!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, lunch and learn

Y

ou come to the beach to feel the sun on your skin, to play in the waves until you are exhausted, to taste the salt water in your fish dinner. In winter, the wind takes your breath away, brings tears to your eyes and leaves a salty crunch in your hair. It’s invigorating, and your body will thank you. Your brain may get a little jealous, though. Time to give your cerebrum some stimulation, too. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) is always ready to teach you. This winter, their Lunch and Learn series continues, with experts offering lectures on a variety of topics. Bring a bag lunch and hear about the Underground Railroad, Sherlock Holmes and Music, pirates, literature, or Guy Lombardo. Get behind-the-screens information about classic movies. Old movies can be a tough sell to the uninitiated. Black-and-white photography, the absence of special effects and a slower storytelling pace put some young people off. Just like teachers can ruin a great novel, a film lover’s insistence that you “must” watch their

favorites can be a turnoff. After all, some of the classics were slow to find an audience even in their own time. When It’s a Wonderful Life was released in 1946, it didn’t do well at the box office; Citizen Kane lost money; The Wizard of Oz took 10 years to turn a profit; while The Rocky Horror Picture Show confused theater-goers. But people watched them, enjoyed them, told their friends, and watched them again. Word of mouth turned these films into classics, and turned their lines into shorthand for modern American conversation.

Just try to make it through a social occasion without hearing, ”We don’t need no stinking badges;” “We’re not in Kansas anymore;” “I’m ready for my close-up;” “Leave the gun. Take the cannolis” or even, “I’ll be back.” Even before most people have watched Casablanca, they know Sam is going to play it again, but if you can get them watch the movie uninterrupted, they’ll worry about the transit papers and cry for Rick and Ilsa just as millions of other have. Presenter Alex Breve uses clips featuring stars like Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne to explore the Golden Age of the American film industry. Check out the website, capemaymac. org, for the schedule. Most lectures are held at Cape May Methodist Church, 653 Washington Street. The lectures here are free for MAC members; $5 for non-members, and beverages will be provided. This year, lectures will also be presented at Atlantic Cape Community College (bring a bag lunch or buy something from campus food service) and at Lucky Bones.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I are invited to my nephew’s wedding and I have been asked to stand in as the mother of the groom because the groom’s mother refuses to attend, saying she will not be in the same room with her ex-husband and “cannot forgive” her son for inviting him. I’m happy to accommodate my nephew/godson but feel I should reach out to my sister-in-law and try to make her see sense. My husband disagrees. He maintains she was always “crazy” and “you can’t fix crazy.” — Reluctant Stand In Dear Reluctant Run over to Cape Atlantic Book Co. and order The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. One of the tenets is to never swim upstream. This is obviously an old argument and your nephew/ godson has decided he no longer

Wise answers to perplexing questions

wants to swim in that stream. In this sense, your husband is right: Placing yourself in the middle of that battle will bode ill for you and add to the animus. Go to the wedding and enjoy the day. Your sister-in-law will have to live with her decision for the rest of her life. Dear Answer Lady My sister had a knee replacement last month and is not doing the exercises and work that she has been told to do. Nor is she taking any steps to lose weight so the other knee doesn’t have to be replaced. We are a big

family and there is plenty of support for her but she simply refuses to help herself. Shall we stand by hopeless and watch her make an invalid of herself? As kids we were always active: softball, tennis, swimming anything we could fit into the day. There must be something we can do. — Losing the Battle Dear Battle Get your sister into some form of therapy or counseling. She is clearly depressed and needs some help getting back on track. Secondly, since you are a big family it should be relatively simple to plan a series of excursions. There are great walking trails out at Cape May Point State Park. The Nature Center of Cape May offers many activities some indoors, some not. The Cape May Observatory always has a birding event, especially with spring right around the corner. Also, Cape May Tennis Club is wonderful and their clay courts are easy on the knees. Start with baby steps — small walks on the promenade to watch the sunset should be a nice incentive. The more you walk and get her moving, the easier it will be to shed those pounds.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

T

hese are the times that try birders’ souls. You’ve had your fill of winter waterfowl and you’ve filled your memory card with images of the snowy owls haunting Stone Harbor Point. Now what? Focus on learning about the birds that share your world. Ever wonder how David Sibley got to be so good? He really watches birds. Me, I specialize in birds in flight and sometimes amaze myself at how quickly I am able to pin the name to some fast-approaching form. Take mourning doves, the bodies yaw in flight. Starlings fly in tightly bunched flocks House finch are in loose flocks and bounce in flight. Goldfinches undulate. In just 15 minutes of study, you’ll be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with Sibley and pin names to birds beyond the range of those birders stuck in the age of plumage-based field identification. Even if you are already an accomplished birder, you can always be a better birder and no matter how many ringbilled gulls you’ve seen, you can always learn something new.

Did you know you can tell the difference between ring-billed and herring gulls by watching how they walk? One strides, the other moves with quick mincing steps. That’s your homework assignment for the week. Determine which gull is the strider and which is the mincer. Bird behavior, it’s the new frontier. Embrace it and you’ll never face seasonal doldrums again. It’s true, none of these behavioral hints are mentioned in your basic field guide. So be a pioneer!

For extra credit, study the biped movement of great-black-backed gull. Determine how it differs from herring gull. No hints from me. Work it out yourself. Bonaparte’s gull. This one’s easy. They shuffle short distances. Forster’s terns are so short-legged, they simply loft into the air, no walking necessary. Laughing gulls amble and they’ll be back any day now, with their mouths wide open and their minds fixated upon the busy breeding season ahead. Speaking of laughing gull, when’s the last time you really studied one? They rank among our most stunning birds. But if your binoculars are giving you no more than a ho-hum image, maybe it’s time you stopped by the Northwood Center. For less than $150 you can own new binoculars that make starlings look good and red-winged blackbirds look spectacular. “Tur-a-ling,” goes the red-winged blackbird. “Ching, ching, ching,” goes the cash register at Northwood. Tell them Seymore sent you and to put my customary kickback back in the pot

The Movie Column

I

Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews some of his favorite short films

’ll keep this short — about short animated films that is. Sure, there is always a lot of Oscar buzz about feature films, but I always like the shorts category. See how many of these animated flicks you can catch before this weekend’s party! It may take some hunting, but you can find some of them online. And join this Sunday, March 4, as members of the Cape May Film Society party with Oscar at Elaine’s. Negative Space starts with our protagonist packing a bag for a trip. Well, actually, the bag packs itself. His belt slinking its way into the case like a snake is just one of the sites to behold. The stop-action animation is impressive. Equally moving is the story of a young boy who learned how to pack a suitcase from his father, but it is maybe in the unpacking that we find the story. Lou is a not-so-impressive offering from my favorite animators in the mainstream, Disney Pixar. Normally, I’d begrudgingly offer praise for their entries into this category. I do that because there are so many independent offerings from

Negative Space is a compelling short film less wealthy studios — but the Pixar films normally score very high on both animation and storytelling. However, Lou doesn’t cut it. Essentially, it’s a story of a bully who needs to learn to play along. Maybe it’s timely, but it is lacking. Dear Basketball, the short film by basketball professional Kobe Bryant, is made for sports fans and sketch artist aficionados alike. Bryant himself narrates the words he has written. It’s an homage to the sport he’s played for many years and loves so much. It

starts with images of him as a child rolling up a pair of his dad’s socks and aiming for a basket in his bedroom. One of the animators from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast helped in the creation of this work. Other animated films include Garden Party, about a luxurious villa that’s become home to a colony of frogs and toads — but what has happened to the owner? Revolting Rhymes doesn’t tell just one story — it weaves together a tapestry of traditional fairytales in a very unconventional way. After the post-Oscar report, we will take a look at the live action short films. Please join us Sunday, March 4 at Elaine’s for our annual Oscar Party. And while we have your attention, mark your calendars. Only a month after the Oscars we will host our 18th Annual Cape May Film Festival at the West Cape May Borough Hall. The dates are April 6-8, and we look forward to seeing you there. Meet directors, actors, producers, writers while enjoying many films. Find out more by visiting www.newnjstatefilmfestival.com.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

ROXY is extremely affectionate and playful. She enjoys taking walks and plays ball in the yard like a champion. She is very well mannered and calm when she visits the homes of volunteers. Roxy lived with a foster family after her owner died, but they could not keep her. She had great house manners and loved sleeping in the bed and snuggling with them.

ROONEY is a highly energetic young boy who loves to go for long, spirited walks. He is full of life and shows that by his enthusiastic attitude. Rooney prances in his kennel until harnessed and will just as willingly climb into your lap for a quick pet. If you’re looking for a peppy pal, stop by the shelter and adopt Rooney today!

BUDDY is a happy, frisky young dog who craves exercise and affection. He arrived at the shelter when his owner could no longer take care of him but she indicated that he lived with cats. He is extremely affectionate and willingly climbs in laps if allowed. Buddy would thrive in an active family that would continue his training. Adopt today!

The best read of the year! It starts with a 17th-century shipwreck off the coast of Cape May and develops into a story that will keep you turning the pages... Available from Whale’s Tale and Cape Atlantic Book Company. Or you can buy a copy at the Exit Zero online store. Visit ezstore.us/books.
