Coast Guard Community Fest Last Saturday, TraCen Cape May, the Coast Guard base on our harbor and the only USCG boot camp in the nation, opened its gates for the fifth annual Coast Guard Community Festival. Residents and visitors turned up to meet recruits, tour their boats and even watch a simulated rescue mission on the water. They also enjoyed the offerings of more than 40 community vendors, 11 food trucks and a beer garden. In 2014, Congress granted Cape May a Coast Guard Community designation. Thanks to TraCen Cape May for all you do! Photo: Covy Emerson, Edgar Soriano and the Weinberg family

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

Flamingo tongue snails take their body tissue and wrap it around the outside of their shells, which is why they look like they’re covered in orange or yellow spots. (The animals are threatened by people who collect them not knowing they’re alive.) They feed on corals with the help of a sharp tongue that scrapes away and leaves nothing but skeleton behind — it regenerates. The snails also steal chemicals from these corals that they can then use to poison their own predators.

Cape May’s harbor, a century old, came to be when a power broker from Pittsburgh named William Flinn dredged 500 marshy acres with the intention of using the spoils to develop East Cape May. His development project never came to fruition, but the harbor proved invaluable. During both world wars, it provided much-needed access to the Delaware Bay for our troops, and during Prohibition it provided a safe haven for rum runners. Now, it’s home to the only Coast Guard boot camp in the nation, as well as the second most lucrative fishing port, with landings totaling more than $100 million. Recreational fishing more your thing? The marinas along the harbor offer charter trips and boat rentals. Sea-to-table never tasted so good.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Tommy’s Folly Café in Congress Hall. The story: When Congress Hall was built by a man named Thomas Hughes in 1816, it was large. So big, in fact, locals thought it untenable and called it Tommy’s Folly, hence the name of this coffee shop/café. (Fun fact: Thomas himself called the project The Big House by the Sea. The property wasn’t renamed Congress Hall until 12 years later, in honor of Hughes’s election to the House of Representatives.) The vibe: Sunny and clean. The words: They’re everywhere! Books, magazines, newspapers — oh my! If you want the beautiful, tactile experience of reading oldfashioned ink this summer, this is a good place to start. The food: We’re pretty partial to the grab-and-go salads that are healthy and made with ingredients from Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May. Whether you’re craving fresh fruits, veggies, supergrains or a combo, these are a tasty and convenient treat. Of course, we also love their not-so-healthy, pig-shaped cookies with the blue icing because we are five years old at heart and we won’t be shamed for embracing our inner child. The drinks: We opted for the chai tea on this particular visit, because it’s among the best on the island and always served at the perfect temperature. Nothing worse than a lukewarm chai, amiright? (Okay, maybe a few things — war, famine, poverty — but lukewarm chai has got to be top five!) We ordered ours with soy milk, but all the non-dairy options are available… including oat milk, one of the biggest food trends of 2019. (We read it in one of those old-fashioned magazine things!) The view: There are tables at which to sit inside, but Tommy’s Folly opens onto the Congress Hall veranda and its rocking chairs, so that’s a lovely option as well. Because the ocean still had that early-morning sparkle going on this day, we took our hot beverage across the hotel’s grand lawn (which smelled like fresh cut-grass and firewood) and toward a set of adirondack chairs overlooking the sea. Not a bad way to start the day. Hot Tip: Order the large. Life is short.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Matt Reeves from The Mad Batter is up. How long have you been bartending? Six years. Favorite drink to make? I’m all about gin right now so I’d have to say a Beefeater martini or a gin rickey. What’s your bartending pet peeve? The lack of willingness to read. I hand customers a menu with our awesome draft selections and they order a miller lite or ask me to choose. Dream job? Bar owner.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Susan Bendas from Cape May who was filling up before taking a trip up north with her cat. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $5 discount for Cape May Brewing Co. Who would she like to share this with? Her husband Ray.

Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

come to you this week from the southwest corner of my bed here at Undertow Central, looking back on a pretty great week, and looking forward to a pretty great summer. It’s going to be a busy one for me between gigs with my four ongoing musical concerns and slumming it at Exit Zero Filling Station a couple nights a week (it keeps me in touch with the little people, keeps me humble) and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Yeah, I’ll have a perpetual sore throat for the next five months (and never stop bitching about it) but that’s a pretty small price to pay for getting to make my living with my voice. Which I did last Friday with my wing man, Tim Joyce. We (O’Brien & Joyce) played our first ever gig at The Watering Hull in Stone Harbor and, aside from carrying the speakers up the stairs before discovering there was an elevator, it went pretty well. Patricia O’Conner was there with mer mother Mary who I swear to god I thought was her sister, and a half-dozen other friends who did their best to stump us but FAILED as Tim and I went pretty deep into the well for

some Peter Gabriel and King Harvest, among others. I recognized Patricia from a few of my tribute shows and she confessed to Facebook-stalking me which, along with Randy and Wendy Redelico (Ding!) gives me multiple friendly stalkers like a real-life celebrity! Anyway, The Watering Hull is a cool spot with great food if you can work up the courage to venture north of the Texas Avenue Wawa. Friday was a fitting warm-up to Saturday, which was the Third Annual Billy Joel Night, Cape May Part 2. Just when I feel like these tribute shows might be running out of steam,

about 1,000 people showed up at Cabanas. Yes, Randy and Wendy were there (and she TOTALLY didn’t slip any money into my pocket…) but the real highlight for me was getting to show off in front of my wife, who’s always full of sound advice (there’s a pun in there if you think about it) and sharing the stage with my youngest son, Henry, who got up and played on “Angry Young Man” and sang “My Life”, after which all the pretty girls fawned over him. Strangely, he now wants to be a musician when he grows up. Kathleen Scullion, Dean Bloemer, Cousin Ray Heslip and the rest of their Merry Band of Misfits continued to show up, which is deeply and truly appreciated. We also had a young, pretty bachelorette party show up. They were very sad to learn I was not their stripper, but were happy enough to settle on hearing “Captain Jack”, one of several tunes we played multiple times by request and because the stupid band leader (me) rearranged the set lists and put all the hits too early in the night. We tried real hard to finish at eleven, but

the cheering mass on the dance floor simply wouldn’t let us, so we played until almost midnight. (To the band members who asked; no, there is no overtime pay, we do it for the love of music! Don’t you love music? Huh?) Cabanas was a great host and is a room we love playing, especially when John Fullerton is fiddling with the knobs (sex joke?) and making us sound real good. So, many thanks to Cabanas and all who dwell within her. Sunday wasn’t a gig but it was still a blast, rehearsing with The Terry O’Brien Band, which will make its debut later this summer at Carney’s, where we’ll be planting our flag on Sunday nights. It was our second rehearsal focusing on the Beatles and Prince sets (and fiddling with a few Springsteen tunes), and I gotta tell you; it gone be good. Me, Al Olivero, Rachel Husta and Sue Polcer are holdovers from the other bands, along with Dr David Bee on guitar (he’ll tune your axe and check your eyes) and Richard Lewis on bass. No, he’s not THAT Richard Lewis, he’s just A Richard Lewis. They’re all talented musicians, and also certified beer snobs. Finally, on Monday, O’Brien & Joyce kicked off our summer season at the Rusty Nail, and the gig was really… okay, so the gig hadn’t happened as of this writing, but I just assume all our Rusty Nail gigs are going to be wildly successful because they always are. You can catch us there every other Sunday and Monday starting… NOW! But enough about me, let’s talk about me some more... You know, I never liked Jon Sachar all that much, then he brought me a coffee Wednesday morning as I tended the gas pumps and now I like him a lot. His dog, on the other hand, was giving me the furry stink eye like he knows I’m a cat person, but I was able to defuse this tension with a well placed Milk-Bone doggie treat. For the dog. And I kid about not liking him. I like him just fine. We go back to ye olden days of the previous century, and his was the first wed-

May 9, 2019 ding I ever sang at. “Love Is All Around” by The Troggs, which the band played a step-and-ahalf too high and upon which I sounded like a chipmunk in front of Spielberg’s People. To this day I believe this is the only reason I never became a movie star. The coffee, by the way, was a delicious decaf blend (I know, I know… but whatever part of your body processes caffeine stopped working for me in 1998) with a hint of French Vanilla from Ostara’s on Park Boulevard. No, I am not sponsored by Ostara’s. It is just a neat little place where one can always get a fine cup of Joe. If you think your coffee is better, why, I wouldn’t be averse to trying a cup along my route. Every Thursday. Around 8am. I like my coffee like my women; bitter. Speaking of my wife, her cell phone battery hasn’t been over 30% since 2009. The other day she asked me, “Can you please do these two menial things that most adults do?” What I heard was, “Can you please move these mountains?” JIMMY MURTHA STOLE MY SHIRT! Oddity of the Week: Since becoming the semi-regular Thursday Delivery Guy for EZ Magazine, I’ve seen some interesting things and met some interesting people. But nothing as interesting (unsettling?) as the random photo of me, jazz singer Randy Redelico and the late, lamented George Mesterhazy that hangs on a cork board in the Cape Harbor Shell (northbound foot of the Cape May bridge). The photo appears to be from around 2010 at a karaoke show in Martini Beach. I kind of want to know why it’s there and I kind of don’t. And just like that I’ve managed to fill another one of these columns with my nonsense. Thanks to everyone who’s come up to introduce themselves the last few months. You sure do make a guy feel like a big shot sometimes. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am following the tale of oil drilling off our coast with interest. And I say that as an ex oilman. It was I who taught Red Adair all he knew about fighting oil fires, and had I possessed a cooler nickname it would have been I who was played by that oaf John Wayne in his docu-drama, Hellfighters. Sadly, when they came looking for role models, Red’s name was a lot more palatable than mine – “Drilling D’catur” was, Wayne acidly observed, more fitting as the title of one of those pornographical films that used to be popular in a local video cassette emporium. Actually it was not all bad, as I would have had to endure Wayne’s company had I been the inspiration — that one’s mix of homosexualizing self-hate and rabid anti-communism was amusing for three seconds nd then annoying. Still, I know a lot about oil — back in the day, we didn’t have fancy analysis kits, and would taste the oil as it gouted from the well, to determine its quality. Obviously, there were some minor hazards associate with such — smoking was, for example, discouraged. And I have since heard that crude oil is toxic to the

digestive system. I find that hard to believe, and only recently have been persuaded to cut the ingredient from my morning “healthy tonic for gentlemen”. Previously, the mix of 10 raw eggs, a shot of single malt, a leaf from the cocoa plants that grow in the heart of the Wildwood rainforest, a sprinkle of uranium dust, a blowfish fillet, a pinch of asbestos and a shot glass of crude made for a heady drink. In fact, we used to sell it in the Brown Room, until someone spilled some on bare flesh. But really, I am less fussed than you might

Find Your Way Back...

think, about those rapacious drillers boring holes in the sea bed off the coast. This is in part because we have taken to feeding the growing population of Great Whites a mile from shore, and if I know my fish, they will make surveying and drilling a spirited affair. But more pertinently, because do you remember the Great Cape May Boom of 1921? Where every public building was constructed from gold (it’s still there if you scrape off the camouflage) and every citizen was gifted a Model T automobile. Well, that was not really funded by the discovery of Captain Kidd’s treasure (I have that buried safely on the beach, 100 paces north and 34 paces east of the concrete fort. Or maybe it’s 34 north and 100 east. No, wait, it’s 3.4 west and 10000 north. Or similar) but by our clever “sideyways drilling” machine, that allowed us to extract some oil from the offshore fields without telling anyone. And by “some” I mean “every last drop”. Which in turn created a handy place to pump a century worth of lavatory waste. So, drill away, lads! We shall watch from shore, with noseplugs and umbrellas!

H

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, spring craft show

obbies are healthy, the experts tell us, especially if we think we are too busy for a hobby. Hobbies increase efficiency by relaxing the mind and body, distracting from worry, and encouraging creative thought. It’s good to work at something that isn’t work, to get creative with needle and thread, or stones and wire, or paint and canvas. It may take a while to get the knack of your chosen pastime, but even the frustration of failure is supposedly good for us. We learn patience on our journey to creating something worthwhile. Eventually, if we stick with it, we’ll knit a cap worth wearing or craft a birdhouse worth hanging. Until you get there, visit a craft show for inspiration. Craft shows in Cape May usually offer a variety of quality handmade products, ranging from fine art to baby gifts. You didn’t know how much you needed crocheted water balloons, but these colorful yarn creations, designed to be soaked in water and tossed, are environmentally friendly and save you from having to pick bits of latex out of your lawn.

Micro purses are trendy - they look barely big enough to hold a piece of gum, but let you carry a credit card and keys while looking stylish. Enameled pins maintain their popularity, as do pretty notebooks and bullet journals. You may find products designed to fight anxiety, for the human and non-human members of the family, like weighted blankets and snug vests. There are also likely to be paintings of wildlife, jewelry, stools, and clothing. Plan ahead with a list of upcoming family occasions - perhaps graduations and weddings are on the horizon, and Mother’s Day comes every year. If you see something that makes a

good gift, scoop up a couple. There’s nothing wrong with giving everyone a macrame plant holder or a pair of earrings. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) invites you to celebrate spring - and seek your own artistic role models - at “Sip into Spring Crafts and Collectibles Show” on May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Emlen Physick Estate at 1048 Washington Street. In addition to crafts, there will be demonstrations on bees and on recycling. Enjoy live music, food and cocktails. Treat yourself to coffee and a crepe, or a bloody mary with an empanada - just be sure to enjoy your refreshments far away from the sales tables in case of spills. Take time away from shopping to explore a new hobby - let MAC teach you about “Stylish Succulents for Your Home Garden” in the Carriage House Cafe at 11:30. This interactive workshop lets you create a tea cup keepsake of your visit to Cape May. Tickets are $20 and include everything you need. Visit capemaymac.org for reservations and more information.

The Movie Column

U

nless you’re completely off the grid or otherwise unplugged, you’ve heard about the new Avengers: Endgame movie. The Marvel Universe and it’s creator Stan Lee have done something only George Lucas and his Star Wars franchise have been able to accomplish. Namely, they’ve created an entire universe of characters with an ability to come together or break apart for nearly endless strings of movies. The latest Avengers’ flick is a whopping three hours. Hate long movies… normally. Believe it or not, I want to see this movie again (still haven’t bought my second ticket yet). I didn’t love it so much, rather I’m sure I missed some details the first time around. Good vs evil—doesn’t it always come down to this? Chasing after that prized possession everybody wants — doesn’t it always come down to that? It’s in the characters that we find the differences in these epic superhero movies. In this one, the characters deliver. There are enough variations of familiar heroes you thought you

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

knew to make the story really come alive. Some of the themes are very familiar, but somehow the writers present them so they’re not a bundle of clichés. If somebody were to write me and say how I’m completely wrong, I would not disagree too vehemently. But for me this film was able to keep it fresh and in that made it worth my time ( yes, the whole three hours). Well, more than that I cannot say. I run the risk of handing out some spoilers, and nobody wants that. Of course, spoilers

count most when the movie first appears in theaters. After a number of years, you can get away with a little spoiler alert. By now, you should know the premise. I’ll spoil the last movie leading up to this one. Are you still reading? You can skip the next paragraph if you don’t want to see this spoiler from the Avengers movie that came out in 2017. In it, evil mastermind — in this case named Thanos— captures all five of these tiny infinity stones that give him all the power in the universe. He snaps his fingers, and an act that one commentator from NPR coined the “snapture,” and half of the people in creation turn to dust. In this installment, the half that remain are looking for a way to reverse what Thanos has done. The plot line unfolds carefully and with a lot of humor. In fact, it is in not taking itself so seriously that the movie moves along quickly. For that, it gets high points. Do you disagree with me? Tell me why by writing me at tomhsims@aol.com.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I have a black-tie ball to attend next week and she has a bought a gown which she looks dreadful in. It is a gross understatement to say it is not flattering. She looks positively dumpy which she is not. Oh, and bonus? She paid a ton of money for the damn thing because it is a “designer gown.” What do I do? If I tell her she looks awful – she’ll cry and refuse to go, not to mention the fact that I don’t think there’s time to return it and get something else. I feel the best strategy is to shut up and look the other way, but if you have a different tack, please feel free to volunteer it. I thank God I am a man and can just roll out the tux. – Conflicted Husband Dear Conflicted Husband Ah, not an enviable position. The best course of action is to find out subtly if the dress

Wise answers to perplexing questions

is returnable. If the tags are still on it, it probably is, and you must then face the wrath of honesty knowing you will be rewarded in heaven. However, if not – the Answer Lady suggests you shut up and drink heavily at the ball. Just so it’s not a total loss, encourage your wife to visit The Lady’s Room consignment shop and try to resell the unfortunate fashion choice. Dear Answer Lady I went to lunch the other day with my best friend. It was my birthday and he was treating me – rare for him as he is rather

tight with money, which brings me to my concern. He is a notoriously poor tipper. He is philosophically opposed to tipping. I, on the other hand, tend to go the other way, probably too much so. When it came time to settle-up, I had an idea of what the bill was and what the tip should be – even by very conservative standards. He didn’t even leave that. I was so embarrassed. I wanted to slip the server some money on the QT but there was no opportunity. So, I slithered out the door. What would you have done? – Red-Faced Dear Red-Faced The Answer Lady would have walked out of the restaurant and used some excuse to go back in and slip the server the added tip. This is a common philosophical dilemma and too many arguments result. You did the right thing. Your friend wanted to treat you and you were gracious. In the majority of American restaurants, servers are paid less hourly with the idea in mind that they will be compensated by the patrons. It is unfortunate your friend does not see the economic disparity inherent in a simple lunch.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

was seated in my backyard, sipping my morning Joe, waiting for the muse to inspire. With summer breeders arriving daily, I felt, surely, there would be a bird here to inspire a column. House Wren searching nooks and crannies? Chimney Swifts cutting cookie cutter patterns in the sky? American Robin incubating her clutch of eggs in the dogwood? No, the bird that stole the show was House Sparrow, like many of us, a European immigrant. As I watched, one of these transplants streaked across the yard and snapped a moth out of the air. There are flycatchers that could not have accomplished this. First introduced in 1850 in Brooklyn, these Old World natives found city life much to their liking. Being mostly grain eaters, the little street urchins found a surfeit of grain served up daily by the horses drawing carriages and delivery wagons — droppings are rich in undigested oats. Henry Ford’s marvelous transportation device must have caused a measure of consternation among the new immigrant population, but by the

turn of the century, the “Black-throated Brown” had discovered another reliable food resource. Realizing that processed grain in the form of discarded donuts, pizza crust and breadcrumbs was also grist for the House Sparrow mill, the birds turned to us. As we moved out of the cities and into suburbia, the birds followed. When I was seven, a colony of 20 or so pairs had tucked their messy nests into the ivy covering my neighbor’s chimney. Their incessant chirps and dust-bathing

antics captivated me and still do. Many birders, particularly Purple Martin landlords or bluebird trail maintainers are disdainful of these tough little cavity nesters. I commend you to put your prejudice aside and see these industrious immigrants for what they are, Today House Sparrows are found all across North America, including Mexico and the West Indies. They are as much a fixture on barnyards in the Midwest as inner cities along the Eastern Seaboard. The only habitat they have not yet colonized is Arctic tundra. I have even seen House Sparrows living inside airport terminals and malls where they find shelter and nest space in the rafters and food in the food courts. No native species have been so adaptive. If House Sparrows adopt a subterranean nesting strategy and become migratory, Snow Buntings are going to face some stiff competition. Until then, I’m going to enjoy the House Sparrows that thrive in our town, keep my lawn free of vermin, and keep our town’s resident Cooper’s Hawks fat and happy.

“Ed was an excellent find and resource, especially in the beginning of our purchasing process. He is fully versed in the geographical and cultural aspects of the areas he represents. He was always available and reachable as our search times were limited (out-of-state buyers) and presented properties that met our criteria and price range. We managed to accomplish our goal in a short period of time and Ed was a critical contributor from start to finish. Not only is Ed a respectable Real Estate agent, he is also a gentleman.” — mark and eileen
