The Police Blotter
Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. BEDFORD, OH: A woman reported her 2001 VW stolen and four hours later called back to say she’d seen her car driving in a funeral procession. Police arrested the man shortly after. He’d also stolen the car’s new license plates. – Bedford Sun Banner
Learn Russian With Tanya
YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is just our phonetic interpretation. What kind of spices do you use when cooking? Kakie vidy specyi vy ispolzuete pri gotovke? And, here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Ia ne dobavlau dazhe sol, kogda gotovliu, no eto ne znachit chto v moei strane nikto nichego ne znaut o speciah.Which translates to: I don’t even use salt when I am cooking, but that doesn’t mean everyone in my country knows nothing about spices. –Tanya Zotava
Weird Word Of The Week
Gongoozler Originally canal workers’ slang, used to refer to those who sat watching the canals, it now applies to all idle spectators.
Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities
A Picture From The Past
THIS photo of the Beach Theatre was taken shortly after it opened on June 29, 1950. Though the building now sits vacant and awaits a possible demolition, it was a center of activity long before the Washington Street Mall. Back when the theatre had only one screen, the first movie ever shown was the Spencer Tracy hit, Father of the Bride. In the 1980s, facing declining ticket sales, the owners split the auditorium into a multiplex. Their efforts were ultimately fruitless. – Ben Miller
Facebook Mystsery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what restaurant’s dining room you are looking at, you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
SAFFRON is actually the female reproductive organ or stigma of the saffron crocus. Each flower has only two stigma, so it takes more than 50,000 flowers to produce a pound of saffron. However, a pound of saffron can sell for as much as $5,000 per pound.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Good beginning is half done. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with shrimp lo mein and a cup of miso soup Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor
P
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
ART of me doesn’t even want to write any more about the biggest issue facing Cape May – that’s right, Convention Hall. I rue the day that Mayor Ed Mahaney and the city council promised that the process for deciding on a new center would be a thoroughly democratic, transparent one. What followed was, indeed, a very democratic process. So much so that I wonder why we even bothered to have a city council. Why not just ask every single taxpayer what THEY would like to see built on the beachfront. It could hardly have been any more prolonged or tortuous had we actually done that. And now, three whole seasons after the original building was deemed unsafe and closed down, we are still without a center, and we all know that it will be at least another two more summers before a new one is ready. I have argued right from the start that the plan drawn up by the architects, KimmelBogrette, and which was approved by a majority of two-to-one in a referendum two years ago, is a good one. And I continued to argue that even when the city announced that it would cost about $3 million more than they bargained for to build that design, due primarily to the fact that the building would have had to be moved 24 feet forward, meaning that the promenade would have to be redone. Do you all remember the presentation the city made a few months ago? It demonstrated that even with the increased cost of the plan that taxpayers would only be paying about $50 a year extra. It was a very impressive and persuasive argument. I thought that would be the end of it, but the three new members of council (all of whom were endorsed by Exit Zero, it has to be said) voted the plan down.
Ever since then I have watched with increasing frustration and sadness as the plan for a building that would further enhance Cape May’s tourism pedigree was chipped away until now it looks like we are going to get something that’s little better than the souped-up cowshed that stands there now. We elect politicians to make decisions on behalf of the people. So what makes some folks think that it’s okay for them to constantly meddle and cause delays which are hurting businesses in the city and denigrating the Cape May tourism experience? If you feel so strongly about getting involved in city business, then stand for election. Wait, one of the most persistent meddlers did that and finished well behind in the voting. And if you think that your job as a city council member is ONLY to listen to your constituents without having a strong view of your own, having had more access to information than the typical member of the public, then I’m sorry, that makes you a mouthpiece, not a spirited, useful public servant. It’s a mess and the city brought this upon themselves. They should have shown stronger leadership, instead of letting every Tom, Dick and Harry, and their cats, vent their opinion.
Now we also have two former mayors chiming in with letters to a local newspaper, saying how THEY would have it done. This is what happens when people sense there’s a power vacuum. Seriously, it’s turned to farce. It’s already claimed one victim. Henry’s on the Beach, which has been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on the promenade for 12 years, closed after Labor Day and won’t be reopening. Owner Ed Henry blamed the delay on the new hall. “We just can’t wait any longer for Conventon Hall. It hurt our business so badly. In the spring and fall, especially, people just aren’t going to that part of town because there are no events,” Ed told me. Henry’s on the Beach employed 50 people, most of them locals. They were not the only business to hurt. Both Oasis and Tisha’s Fine Dining would have stayed another year on the promenade, but had to leave because the city had scheduled demolition before the beginning of this summer season. That’s a lot of lost rental income for the city. I could go on but, truly, I’m just about sick of writing about this subject, and you may well feel the same way about reading it. Speaking of which, you won’t have to listen to my voice (in solo form) any longer. As of next week, the Ramblings column will have a different feel. I will still be contributing, but so will others, primarily my colleagues Dan Mathers and Jon Roth. The column will have a fancy new title – Ramblings from the Editors. Subtle, huh? The new column will be a mixture of gossip, observations serious and otherwise. And in the spirit of shaking things up, we have introduced a new What’s On guide (see pages four and five), and we have a couple new features coming in the next few weeks. Please enjoy, dear reader. Pulitzer Prize-winning Play Comes To Cape May Director James Reynolds tells us why “Topdog/Underdog” is such an important show
N
EXT week, Cape May Stage presents its new show, Topdog/ Underdog, which earned its writer, Suzan-Lori Parks, the Pulitzer Prize in 2002, the year it opened on Broadway. Bringing the play to Cape May directly from a successful run in Los Angeles (with the same actors and directors) is a coup for Cape May Stage, though the play has attracted controversy for the explicit language used by the characters – two poor, but streetwise, brothers. We spoke to the director, James Reynolds (best known for his role as Mayor Abe Carver on NBC’s Days of our Lives), as he prepares for opening night here on September 30. What first attracted you to working at Cape May Stage? Roy [Cape May Stage’s Artistic Director] and Marlena Steinberg have been friends for a number of years and Roy told my wife, Lissa, and me about this wonderful place called Cape May. He knew we each had solo shows we had performed around the country and asked that we come here. How was your experience here last year? Lissa did her solo show, A Woman of Independent
“Days of our Lives” star James Reynolds is directing Cape May Stage’s latest show.
Means, and I did mine, I, Too, Am America. This past July we were on stage together in Oliver Hailey’s And Where She Stops Nobody Knows. We love the town and the Cape May Stage. The people in Cape May have been extraordinarily welcoming. We appreciate the quality of theater
Roy has established in town. What attracted you to Topdog/Underdog? We have a theater in South Pasadena, CA called the Fremont Centre Theatre. We have been fortunate that in the theater’s 13-year life the critics and audience have lavished praise on us. Roy was aware of the quality of productions. He thought it would be good if we cooperated on a production and suggested Topdog/Underdog. When I read the play and learned of its history I was very excited about directing it. How did the play go over at Fremont? We had a tremendous run in LA. I have seldom been involved with a show that was so universally acclaimed. Both in print and on the internet we got tremendous reviews. I had heard of Topdog/ Underdog before we decided to go ahead with the production, but I knew little about it. Not only was Suzan Lori Parks the first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for playwrighting, but Topdog/Underdog was an immediate hit in New York when it opened in 2002. How did you choose the actors? We auditioned over 50 actors for the two roles. Because

James Reynolds Interview ? From Page 27 the characters are brothers we read a number of the actors for both roles. We were amazed at the talent we had to pick from. We saw, right away, that our son Jed fit the description of the characters. When we finally reduced the number of possibilities to 12 actors we asked each them to read together. Jed and Stephen seem to click, even though I still wasn’t certain who would play Lincoln and who would play Booth. What would you say to someone who is a regular theater-goer but who isn’t keen on such explicit language? I don’t know that any theatergoer HAS to be keen on explicit language. I know I’m not. However, theater-goers should be keen on the explicit experience that the play they are watching embodies. Almost every explicit word that is spoken today in popular culture was written in the plays of Shakespeare. Yet in the guise of old English we accept as culture what in the character of modern slang is seen as offensive. I will not tolerate gratuitous use of expletives. In Topdog/Underdog, as in a Quentin Terantino film, these words are part of the lives we are watching. In this play the explicit language is simply how these two young men talk. It is the desperate childhoods of these two men that offends me. We call the situations these men
Stephen Rider and Jed Reynolds star in “Topdog/Underdog”, opening September 30.
deal with adult themes, because adults should be able to watch and digest the important ideas this play deals with. Topdog/Underdog is filled with humor and the depth of the human struggle. Why does the language have to be so explicit? I don’t know that the language HAS to be explicit. I do know the language must illuminate the lives of the characters we are watching. The strong language is not done for effect – on the contrary, it is simply the way they communicate. I have a friend who is very successful and well known. Every other word he utters starts with “F” and yet he is not shunned.
Did you have any walk-outs during the run at the Fremont theater? No one ever walked out of Topdog/Underdog in our Los Angeles production. No one in the press mentioned language. None of the many audience members spoke of being offended. The conversation was of how wonderful the two actors were. How does it feel to have walk-outs as a director or an actor? I have never experienced people walking out in a huff. So as an actor or director I don’t know how that would feel. I would doubt if it would bother me. I would never be involved in something that would be gratuitous. I am not an anything-goes kind of guy. If anything, I am a little uptight. Audiences must educate themselves about the plays they see, the music they listen to, the TV they watch, and the films they go to. The public does not need to be protected from art. What is your next project? We have two projects we are considering for our next season that I may direct. One play tells stories of a Jewish neighborhood in post-World War II New York. The other concerns an African-American family dealing with end-of-life issues. I purposely mentioned the ethnicity of the characters because each deals with themes that are universal. Ultimately, humans share the same stories, no matter the coarseness of the language or the uniqueness of the idiom.

Customer Service
W
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HILE all my girlfriends are excited to buy cribs and breast pumps, I can’t picture myself as a mother. They spend hours discussing the pros and cons of a binky (which is like, what, a blankey?), Gerber vs Parent’s Choice (it all ends up on the bib anyway, right?), and effective toilet training strategies (isn’t that what a Diaper Genie is for?). Sometimes I think I’m missing the maternal gene altogether, but then I have a night like this last one and I feel reassured. I’m not wired incorrectly; I just spend too much time in the restaurant. It’s not so much that I mind children; I just mind them in fine dining. They order as many Shirley Temples as they have electronic devices. Parents need to lug a suitcase across the dining room just to hold all the iPods, iPads, and iJustmakealotofnoises necessary to keep their grenadineloaded rascals entertained. And then, in between Tetris tournaments and texting, the kids eat, well, a lot of crap. Salad? Yuck. Fish? Eek. Quasi-
edible chicken-like substance the chef keeps on hand for the under five-foot set? Bring it on… but only if I can beg the Mad Batter for ketchup first. As far as children are concerned, it isn’t cleanliness that’s next to godliness; it’s ketchup. Sometimes, though, it isn’t the older kids who are the most demanding. Last night, I waited on a young couple and their bouncing baby boy called Bean. For Bean’s first birthday celebration, his parents had me write “Happy birthday, baby,” on his dessert plate, in chocolate syrup, as a surprise. When I slipped at the beginning of the meal by saying, “So here’s the birthday boy,” the father shot me a look of disgust.
“So much for the surprise,” I heard him say. Now most one-year-olds I’ve met don’t yet know that their hand is attached to their arm, but little Bean – drooling, jibberjabbering Bean – not only knows what a birthday is, but how to read. And I ruined it. Perhaps this is why Bean was so cranky. His parents moved tables three times, trying to find a comfortable spot for their little prodigy. They decided eventually to move altogether out of the dining room and into the lounge, where baby Bean might relax on the $500 zebra-print sofa. I followed behind with diaper bag in tow. When it came time for dessert, I brought my decorated plate with a bowl of fresh berries in the center. Baby Bean, I was told, tries to stay away from sugar – a budding dietician, I’m sure. But Bean was too distracted by his big toe (a future podiatrist, no doubt), to notice his makeshift dessert. Maybe I’ll be a mother some day, maybe not. What I do know is this – when it comes to causing trouble in the restaurant, Baby Einsteins take the (sugar-free) cake.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
AM a man who likes things spicy. I like my ladies spicy, my gambling spicier and my spices spiciest. I remember the time I ran an East India Company schooner from Bombay to Cape May in three weeks f lat, the holds filled to bursting with rare spices. We fought off scores of pirate chefs, desperate for our cargo, who sailed out from beachfront cafes in their sailboats, tall white hats waving, brandishing heavy ladles and nasty looking filleting knives… It was on that run that I developed a curry habit, after a wager with a member of my crew, Seaman Stanes. Stanes had seen the world and left body parts behind on every continent. He lost an eye to the headhunters of Borneo, a leg to the Cook Island natives and a hand to a giant squid (truly he came out better for this abuse: his replacement eye was a fine opal that I swear could swivel and glare to make a man break into cold sweat, his new leg was carved from ivory in the shape of a bird’s claw, and his hand was a fully-articulated wonder of brass and mahogany that emit-
ted small puffs of steam from time to time). Anyways, to while away the hours we started a blind wager: we would take a handful of the contents of random herb and spice sacks from the hold, and have to consume the contents no matter what. The ownership of the cargo was the wager. Well, I got lucky for the first few rounds. First I scored a mouthful of oregano, then a handful of basil, while Stanes gagged on some cloves, and wept tears from a lump of ginger. On my next turn, though, I had the
misfortune – or so I thought – to put a fistful of the hottest curry powder known to man in my mouth. For a second, I thought “This isn’t so bad,” then my entire head caught fire, and f lames shot out my ears, nostrils and other apertures not to be discussed in polite company. I shrieked once, a high, girlish wail, and collapsed on the deck, where I foamed, howled and clawed my way in tiny circles, begging to be put out of my misery. It was then, though, through seared and watering eyes, that I saw Stanes smirking and putting a small sack of curry powder back in his pocket. The despicable wretch had clearly emptied the contents into the top of the sack I was to eat from. Of course I leapt to my feet and struck him on the temple with my f laming fist, thus winning the wager, I am sure you will agree. Since that day my taste buds have been irrevocably damaged. The only thing I can taste at all is curry – thus I f lavor every dish with it, with the exception of malt whisky.

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz
DID something this week that I thought I would never do. I was completely against it, was unwavering in my convictions, thought it was a pointless waste of time (and I waste enough time engaging in pointless activities). Despite my resolution, I caved in and signed up for a Facebook account. Now I’m completely consumed! It hasn’t even been a week, and I already fully realize what a valuable tool it can be. For the record, I know that I’m somewhat behind in trends, but that’s always been the case. I like to be a silent observer before I become an active participant. My initial intention was solely to reconnect with high school classmates. However, as I expanded my search, I realized how many shops, restaurants, and events (yes, actual events) have Facebook pages. For some of you, this information may be old news. However, if like me, you haven’t joined this social networking community, or if you have, but have not fully discovered its potential, now is the time to pay close attention! This is beneficial
to both residents and visitors of Cape May. Currently, I’m “following” Cabanas Beach Bar, Cape May Winery, Lucky Bones, and Martini Beach. But you can choose Cape May Jazz Festival, Cape May Whale Watching, Singer-Songwriter Cape May, Cape May Chamber, and Cape May Beaches, just to name a few. You will receive up-todate information about specials, discounts, events, new items, schedules, and menus. You can post questions and actually have staff or patrons respond. For example, I
learned that Cape May Winery has tours starting every day at 3pm, reservations are recommended, and you can taste two wines for FREE or six wines for $6 and keep the glass! I also learned that there is a sidewalk sale on September 16, Cabanas has a tailgate buffet for Monday Night Football and drink specials with local f lavors of the host teams, Oktoberfest is on October 2 on Jackson Street, Lucky Bones serves breakfast, and Martini Beach has a $5 happy hour daily from 3-6pm. Whew! This is only a sliver of the information that I obtained. Now, you may wonder what the difference is between “following” these places and events on Facebook and just searching for them the traditional way on the Internet. With Facebook, you have the information sent to you on a silver platter — as soon as it is posted; the news is contained on your own page, or “wall”. It’s that easy and convenient. So join the rest of the world, as I reluctantly did, and sign-up for Facebook to stay in touch with Cape May, learn about upcoming events, and follow Exit Zero!

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have a good friend who cannot put her cell phone down for one second. If she’s not talking, she’s texting. We were in the bathroom one night at the Boiler Room, and I thought she was talking to me from another stall, but she was on her phone! I know everyone has one these days, and I do too, but at least I turn the thing off so we can eat a civilized lunch. Should I just pick up my phone when she does this and start making calls? – Hold the Phone Dear On Hold Perhaps the next time she picks up the phone while you’re dining, you can send her a text informing her of your intention to get up and leave her with the check if she doesn’t focus on the business at hand. Certainly, we’ve all been in situations where we’ve had to take a call when we’re
otherwise engaged, from a boss or a babysitter, for instance. But it’s the folks who must immediately respond every time the phone chirps, or text until they develop calluses, who give cell phone usage a bad name. The next time you both get together, say to her: “I’m putting my phone on vibrate and sticking it in my purse until we’re done eating – why don’t you do the same so we can catch up without interruptions?” Dear Answer Lady I had a bad falling out with a friend.
MaryAnn’s CONTEMPORARY & ESTATE JEWELRY
She was wrong and I was right and I know this, but she doesn’t want to let bygones be bygones. I recently ran into her in public, and she completely freaked out on me – yelling, cursing and actually threatening me. It was embarrassing, since it was in front of several mutual acquaintances, and I don’t want them to view me as the bad guy. Is there anything I can do at this point to salvage this friendship? – Ex-Friend Dear Frenemy For goodness’ sake, dear, why on earth would you try? The woman sounds downright unstable, not to mention classless. Friendships end, and while people may have unresolved issues, to carry on like that in public is simply a deal-breaker. As for other people’s perceptions, I daresay that her tantrum said a great deal more about her than it did about you. There is no mention here of your (perceived) offense, but unless it involved seducing her husband, intentionally driving over her family pet or some equally egregious deed, she is responding like a lunatic. The Answer Lady’s advice to you is to steer clear.

Renaissance Festival Promises Fun, Fire-Eating
A
Access to Art assembles a rich program of courtly entertainment
CCESS to Art holds its first Cape May Renaissance Festival on October 2 and 3 on a 40-acre vineyard in West Cape May. The festival features 21 acts including music, magic, theater, poetry, and a Renaissance court. The court hails from the era of Elizabeth I, a patron of the arts who sponsored theater, poetry, rhetoric, and music. Elizabeth played the lute, loved to dance, and studied all the courtly arts of the era. “The Festival is filling up with acts designed to delight children of all ages. We have Felix the Bubble Meister, who has been making bubble machines since 1983,” said Barbara Beitel, Access to Art director. “My machine is constructed using technology from the time period, a bellows and a simple lever. It only requires muscle power to make it work,” Felix Castegna said. Another entertaining act will be Lucas the Magician, a Franklinville man who does blade-swallowing. In his spare time, he eats fire and sets his tongue alight. “For light entertaining, he juggles, which will be
easier on your heart conditions than swallowing swords or eating fire,” Beitel said. Singing sweetly through all this mayhem and magic will be A Couple of Note, who have performed at the New York Renaissance Festival and the Medieval Festival. On Saturday, Rowan’s Collegium Musicum will make an appearance with period instruments and music. Another featured musical group is Renaissonics. Led by John Tyson, this ensemble performs
in England, France, Canada and the US, and their upcoming set in Cape May will include two costumed Renaissance dancers and a stilt-walker. “The Festival showcases New York actors from East Lynne Theater Company, and regional actors from South Jersey Regional Theatre and the Ritz,” said Beitel. “A lot of our acts hail from South Jersey. We will have local crafters making lace, baskets, and glass bobbins,” she said. Spend two days at the Cape May Renaissance Festival and celebrate the arts with Access to Art, your key to the arts in South Jersey. The event is located at the Willow Creek Farm on 168 Stevens Street and runs from 10-5pm both days. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and teens. For tickets visit www.accesstoart.org. For an early taste of the festivities, attend the Renaissance Festival Fundraiser this Thursday, September 23 from 6-8pm at the same location. Guests will enjoy refreshments and good company (including some Elizabethan courtiers). Tickets are $50 and can be obtained by calling (609) 884-7171.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
«
BARLEY can be a little timid around new people but give him some time and he really comes out of his shell. Aside from giving kisses, one of his favorite pasttimes at the shelter is going outside to run and play. He enjoys his toys and will always drop them for you when he’s playing. If you are looking for a companion who likes to go for walks and does well on a leash, come see Barley. Adoption fee is $95.
«
FOXXY is a sweet, yet reserved, seven-year-old shepherd mix who will need a quiet, adult home. She was an outside dog so she requires a bit of training, but with lots of love we think she’ll come around. She did very well on her temperament test. All Foxxy needs now is a second chance to have her own home and an owner who will give her the affection and attention she deserves. Adoption fee is $35.
«
ELIZABETH is a sweet three-year-old girl who came to our shelter very emaciated. Within a week she has gained a few pounds and has started filling out. She has still somehow managed to remain a friendly and happy girl who loves interaction. All she needs now is someone who will dedicate their time and effort to her. In return, you’ll receive a faithful companion who will always be grateful. Adoption fee is $95.

CALI, a five-year-old calico, arrived at the Shelter with her brother, Jynx, as a surrender. Cali is friendly as can be, immediately stretching her paws out of the cage, just begging, “Please get me out of here!” We’d love to see Cali and Jynx stay together, since they’ve been companions all their lives. On her own, Cali’s adoption fee is $20.

CLOVER is a plus-size female, but absolutely a beauty, with her gray and white markings. She arrived here when the building she lived in went “Pet Free.” Though a bit shy, Clover enjoys quiet petting and a cozy place to snooze. Won’t you restore this girl to the home she so enjoyed? Adoption fee is $20.

CHIPMUNK and his brother, Squirrely, are virtually identical: they’re lively, friendly brown tabbies who are sweet as can be. These two romp and climb, chase each other in circles, and generally keep busy. They’re such good friends, we’d like to see them go home together. Adoption fee is $70.

Leather And Lace
A barmaid’s tribute to the old days at Gloria, now known as Cabanas... by June Keating Sherwin
I
HAD only been in Cape May for two weeks in the summer of 1975 when I escaped the breakfast shift at the Pier House (where, instead of tips, we got prayer pamphlets from the retreaters at the Christian Admiral hotel across the street) and landed a job at the Gloria, on Beach Avenue and Decatur... the hottest bar in town. That first day, when I stepped up to the bar at the back of the old Victorian saloon and ordered a round of drinks, the service bartender, Dan Stephenson, took my order and mixed the drinks without looking at me once. He was too busy squinting at the tiny TV bolted in the corner of the ceiling way down at the other end of the room. As the shift went on, I found I had to repeat my order or wait a few seconds for Dan to finish cursing the latest bad call coming from the earplug attached to the transistor radio tucked in his pocket. It was baseball season and Dan wasn’t about to miss a single play of the game. In fact, he’d have been much happier if I, along with the entire staff and all

the customers, would shut our mouths and get out of his line of sight, and please – if it’s not too much to ask – just go find another bartender. Dan was like that when the Phillies were playing. I soon learned that Gloria day shifts meant little money and long hours chatting up sunburned vacationers from towns like Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Montreal. But the worst days were the ones spent working the second-floor porch. Tracy, Eils, Chrissie, Sarah, Julie and I always tried to trade the porch for another station, any station, as long as it was downstairs. Working the porch required special skills. Like trekking up steep stairs costumed in floor-length skirts (that first summer we wore our own long skirts and dresses, but by the second summer we all wore customsewn Victorian-inspired outfits with fulllength black skirts and fitted, white muslin camisoles trimmed in lace), wearing fourinch wooden platform shoes while balancing a tray loaded with beer mugs and platters. We were strongly encouraged not to sweat on the food. Now that’s a skill. But oh, the night shift. Once you earned

a spot on the coveted night shift schedule, well, that was completely different. One night shift determined if you had what it took to be a barmaid. Rusty, our lanky bar manager, and Jake, our general manager, a smooth talker with a ready grin, may have hired you based on credible fast talk, but they sure didn’t let you stay unless you had

the goods. Barmaid goods that is. Once the sun went down, like a lady of the night the gentile Victorian restaurant traded lace for leather and sashayed into the night as a full-tilt rock ’n’ roll bar. Most of the tourists and shoebies (day-trippers who, as historical legend has it, brought their lunches in shoeboxes) were over at the arcade or back at their motels by 10pm. And that’s when the locals came out. The real locals were a wonderful mix of kids who grew up in Cape May, and summer people who’d been visiting all their lives. We also considered as “local” the waitresses and bartenders from the other bars and restaurants in town (the Merion and Lobster House ladies were some of our favorite customers), college kids like me earning money for school, colorful old-timers, fishermen (both charter crews from the high-end private yachts and commercial fishermen who worked the shrimp and scallop vessels), and the stream of Coasties, those baby-faced Coast Guard recruits who never knew when to call it a night. Some nights at Gloria were wilder than others. Maybe because the moon was full, or not full, or maybe it was somebody’s birthday (well, that was nearly every night), or maybe

Fun at Gloria: Chris Conselmo, June Sherwin, Terry Sherwin, Sue Curry.
Leather And Lace ? From Page 102 a new Coast Guard class had just started up, or maybe Brentwood and Kingfish were back from a long trip out scalloping, which always started the champagne flowing. It didn’t take much to fire up people back then. Nights started out peacefully enough. The band came on at nine. A hugely popular local band, The Cape May Diamonds, accommodated the dinner crowd with an early set of mellow standards; but when they came back on around ten o’clock for a second set, Gloria started heating up fast. And by the third set, when they swung into Springsteen’s, “Tenth Avenue Freezeout”, the stays came loose on the old girl’s corset. Those kids could dance. Like people possessed. They were having FUN. But working in that steam bath? Not for the timid. Don’t ask me why, but if you were working the front station near the dance floor, you had to get your drinks from the bartender at the back service bar. (Yes, Dan’s bar, but he was usually sweeter at night.) It was crazy. Once you picked up your order, you had to push through one set of swinging doors into the kitchen, cross the slimy tile
floor, head back out another set of swinging doors, and then maneuver across a PACKED dance floor, usually with a heavy glass pitcher of beer in one hand and a loaded tray of even heavier mugs in the other. The trays were fitted with plastic boxes for banks, and we collected cash for each round and made change at the tables. I’m not sure how we did that with just two hands. I told you – we had special skills. So the night burned on. Dancers kept dancing and mugs kept emptying. For hours. By the early morning, sometimes one or two of Gloria’s guests might get a little out of hand. Waitresses could usually handle difficult customers, but, luckily, the guys on the door and the bartenders always had an eye out for us. They’d leap over the bar and break up the fray if fists started flying out on the floor. And then there were those exceptional nights, like on Labor Day weekend when the crowd got really wild, when my favorite bartender, Terry (or Rusty, Phil, John or Dave), would let us waitresses slip behind the front bar’s massive mahogany counter just to take a break. And then, finally, just when you’d begin to think the night would never end… last call goes out. Stragglers get shooed out the door. Tables get cleared, banks get tallied and bartenders

get tipped. Like every woman’s worst nightmare, the old girl looked twice her age after a hard night. But we knew that in the very early hours, Angie (lovable caretaker and housemother), and her crew would work their magic, restoring the Victorian lady to lace-trimmed grandeur before the sun came up. So we’d say our goodnights and push through the barroom doors out into the damp night. Inhaling a big breath of salt air, I’d take a sharp left and head down Decatur Street. With a dull bass still thumping in my ears, I’d stroll past the shuttered Merion Inn, laughing quietly about the evening’s craziness. Some
nights, I’d cut across Decatur and head down Columbia, stumbling over the broken and pitched slate slabs nearly hidden under dim street lamps. By the time I reached Ocean Street the bass would grow faint as the tension eased in my neck and shoulders. A shadow in the night, I’d continue on in as silence broken only by distant laughter, or the soft whir of bicycle tires spinning past in the dark. On Hughes Street, under softly rustling leaves, walking slower as I breathed in the deliciously spicy night air, I’d smile knowing that the lady Gloria would be back on the town again. That very night.

Activity Of The Week
S
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Wildwood Boardwalk.
TRETCH your summer with a stroll on the boardwalk! Try your luck with games of chance, or test your powers with games of skill. Ride the giant ferris wheel with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, take a spin on the Himalayan, scream your head off on a roller coaster, and poof – your backto-school blues are gone. America’s first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870, to keep sand out of hotels and train cars. Wildwood’s version has evolved from a simple promenade to an entertainment destination. The resort is one of the most popular vacation spots on the East Coast. The boardwalk is a twomile stretch of planks, lined with shops, restaurants, games, fortune tellers, and more, highlighted by Morey’s Piers, the family-owned entertainment complex offering more rides than Disneyland. Morey’s Piers offer a wide variety: kiddie rides, spinning rides, water rides, and the new dark ride, the Ghost Ship. Introduced in 2010, the Ghost Ship – managed by Exit Zero’s own Terry O’Brien
– is one of the scariest attractions we’ve encountered. Visitors walk through the remnants of the doomed cargo ship Ignis Fatuus. The crew has been devastated by some mysterious, terrifying fate. Whatever your fear – rodents, enclosed spaces, zombies, dirty kitchens – the Ghost Ship has something for you. And, unlike other scary rides, it’s not quick – it takes a good long time to get through, even if you run.
Visiting in the daylight makes it a little less scary, so get in line as soon as it opens. You may want to clear your head with a ride on the merry-go-round when it’s over. When you’re through with the rides, treat yourself to some boardwalk food. Pizza and pretzels draw you in with their tempting odors, but the variety of boardwalk food is endless. Save room for ice cream, and pick up some taffy for the ride home. Or, take home a different souvenir – the bawdy T-shirt shops offer an interesting peek into American pop culture and a hermit crab, though ugly, makes a low-maintenance pet. If you’re on a budget, park yourself on a bench for some worldclass people watching. The boardwalk also serves as Wildwood’s town center, hosting special events like ethnic festivals, car shows and the Beach Jam, a giant campout on the beach for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. You have until October 10 before Morey’s Piers closes for the season, so get moving, and watch the tram car, please. Next week: Surf’s Up!

ORLD without end” is the end of one of Winnie’s prayers in Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days but the play will end this Saturday night so catch the final four performances. It is not a common occurrence that a theatre will have a performer like Lynn Cohen in such an important piece of literature. Cape May Stage continues to push the envelope with its next production. Next week, Topdog/Underdog by SuzanLori Parks will preview on Wednesday and open on Thursday. This play won the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play in 2002 and has been performed all over the world. Ms. Parks is the recipient of a Genius grant from the MacArthur Foundation. Emmy nominee James Reynolds (a Cape May favorite) directs his son, Jed in this groundbreaking play. Joining Jed Reynolds is Stephen Rider who was featured in the film The Great Debaters, produced and directed by Denzel Washington. Denzel has now become a very active mentor of Stephen. Topdog/Underdog is a funny, probing look at who is on top and who is on the bottom. The play is a darkly comic fable brotherly love and family identity. It tells the story of Lincoln and Booth, two brothers whose names were given to them as a joke, foretelling a lifetime of sibling rivalry and resentment. Haunted by the past, the brothers are forced to confront the shattering reality of the future. Variety magazine said, “… the vitality, freshness and gritty lyricism of Parks’ writing are unlike anything to be heard on a

36 Great Things To Do In Cool Cape May
Think you’ve seen Cape May? Think again. Consult our list for some fresh ideas. 1. Morey’s Piers The Wildwood Boardwalk is now home to the biggest attraction the Jersey Shore has seen in years. The Ghost Ship, unveiled Memorial Day Weekend, is a one-of-a-kind haunted attraction featuring animatronics, a scary soundtrack and live actors. Wind your way through the maze-like course of a wrecked ship that appears it has crashed right into Morey’s Piers, and do it soon – the Piers close after October 10. 2. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a quaint seaside town. Then make sure you explore bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins. You can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 4. Dear Friend, In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
VERY year a very small percentage of people take up North America’s second-most popular, fastest-growing outdoor activity. And give it up. Now most birders will find this disclosure unfathomable. “How,” they will want to know, “could anybody turn their back on a life-long treasure hunt, that makes your back yard a vessel of possibility, turns the world into your playground, and offers countless hours of excitement and discovery?” for only a fraction of the cost of golf, wind surfing, ice climbing, scuba diving, and just about any other outdoor activity you can think of this side of sleeping in a hammock. This is particularly unfathomable to a Cape May birder. In Cape May, you can’t turn your nose and not have it pointed at some exquisite, feathered jewel. Peregrine Falcons... Bald Eagles... Northern Harriers... Osprey – all daily fare at Cape May Point State Park. Snowy Egrets, Tri-colored Herons,

Blue-winged Teal, Sora – as common as seagulls at the South Cape May meadows in September. American Redstarts, Black-and-white Warblers, Magnolia Warblers, Red-eyed Vireos – all over Higbee Beach. So let’s just confront the matter head on. Why would somebody confronted with so much possibility give up a hobby that
promises to keep them enthralled for the rest of their lives? The answer is because before they could get to the enthrallment, their aspirations got bushwhacked by frustration. They contract BBD - Birder Dampening Disorder. Tests have proven that people who start birding and give it up do so because they are hobbled by three things. 1. Binoculars that stink. 2. A field guide that stinks. 3. A fundamental lack of knowledge concerning birds and how to find them. Which amounts to one thing – their bird-finding and identifying skills stink. Any one of these shortfalls can short circuit an incipient birder. Taken together, they are deadly. Happily there are things beginning birders can do to avoid Birder Dampening Disorder. All three start with a visit to the Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point.

In this hallowed chamber of birding savvy and bird lore, you will find the finest selection of optics in the state. Binoculars to fit any budget. Binoculars that really, really work for bird watching; those that focus close, fast, have a generous field of view, are bright, sharp, rugged, waterproof... all the stuff bird watchers demand from their instruments. They also have field guides that will help you. Guides that show ALL the birds you are likely to see and present them in a way that replicates what you will see in the field. Best of all, the folks down at the CMBO offer help. That’s HELP as in assistance. They have daily walks and programs and workshops and field trips led by local experts that specialize in finding birds and then making sure you find them, too. Most times they will have binoculars they can loan you and there are always a plentitude of spotting scopes on hand for in-your-face looks at some unbelievable birds. Have you ever seen your ref lection in the eye of a stalking Snowy Egret? Well, why not go on a CMBO bird walk and see birds in a new light. It’s fun. It’s easy. It’s cheap (only $10 for those of you who might not yet be a member of the Cape May Bird Observatory, for a two-hour, easy walk).
Best of all, you’ll avoid BDD and take your first steps on a lifelong treasure hunt. If you’d rather just sleep in a hammock, that’s fine, too. Just leaves more in-your-face scope time for the rest of the people on the walk. The Cape May Bird Observatory (the CMBO), is THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open 9:30am4:30pm every day. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need. Check out the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer), bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, and totes. Take a look at the sightings log or our website to check what’s being seen, pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse. If you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Executive Director of Cape May Film Society, reviews “The American”
W
HO doesn’t love George Clooney? He’s normally involved in two major projects each year (and each one is usually very good). Last year, he was in three films: Up in the Air (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award) as well as Fantastic Mr Fox and The Men Who Stare at Goats. In The American, Clooney plays Jack, an assassin who is reaching the end of an illustrious career. After a botched job in Sweden, Jack escapes to Italy and awaits instructions for his next job. He receives his assignment and tells his boss he is making this one his last. During his stay, Jack begins seeing Clara (played by Italian actress Violante Placido), one of the town’s prostitutes, and he is befriended by local priest, Father Benedetto (played by veteran Italian actor Paolo Bonacelli). Dutch actress Thekla Reuten plays Mathilde, the woman responsible for presenting Jack with his new assignment. The cast in this film is one of the best international ensembles recently assem-

bled in Hollywood. Much credit goes to Dutch director Anton Corbijn for keeping the f lavor of this film authentic and Euro-centric. Corbijn’s previous work was in musical documentaries and music videos, and the style of this film no doubt pulls from those projects. The American is beautifully shot and masterfully edited.
Clooney is unusually muted in this role, but it fits his character and he plays it well. Despite this high praise, by the end of the film you’re questioning motivation and wondering who was doing what to whom. Sure, Jack is an assassin, and we don’t expect all of the details surrounding his work to be anything but covert. What should never be covert is a character’s motivation. I’m all in favor of plot twists, but only ones where the audience has an “ah-ha” moment (not a “wha?” moment). This detracts from the film’s good qualities. Film Fest Preview: One of the short films in the Festival this year is a “mob gem” called Alienated. The comedy stars Vincent Pastore (best known as Big Pussy in the HBO series The Sopranos). Pastore plays a mob guy haunted by the presence of “foreign creatures” he cannot explain. We have invited Mr Pastore to join us for the Festival, and his manager says it is a very good possibility. Stay tuned!
