Sluice Creek Gallery After an exciting spring debut, the Cape May Bird Observatory’s Sluice Creek Gallery will open another group exhibit this fall, A Bayshore View, celebrating the southern New Jersey wetlands with regional folk art, wood carving, pottery, paintings, and photography. During the holiday season, the multi-media show will be augmented with presentations and sales of folk art decoys. World War II Lookout Tower The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts has worked diligently to restore this building to its former state, including the installation of a spiral staircase so that visitors can safely scale the structure and enjoy a view shared by servicemen in during the war years. Visiting the tower is a great opportunity to learn about the integral role Cape May played in our nation’s defense during WWII. Not only that, it’s a particularly mindful way to spend an afternoon on Veterans Day. The tower is open from noon-3pm, and is located on Sunset Boulevard, to the left just before Sunset Beach. Taeko at Carney’s Other Room In her first performance with the Cape May Jazz Festival, Japanese singer Taeko Fukao will deliver a set of jazz standards and hits from her newest album Voice, which has been described as “a vibrant patchwork of styles” influenced by Taeko’s youth in Kyoto, Japan, and female jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald and Anita Baker. Community Messiah Sing Along On November 26, the Cape Island Baptist Church will host their 23rd annual performance of Handel’s Messiah – trust us folks, there’s a lot more to it than the Hallelujah chorus. The public is invited to attend and/or sing along with the volunteer chorus. Choral and instrumental music is available to borrow or purchase, and the free performance will be followed by a reception. Evensong Prayer The Episcopal Church of the Advent will host a traditional choral evensong service at 4pm. The service presents a traditional set of prayers and scripture lessons set to music and sung by choir and congregation – this particular service employs chants and prayers that have been in the Anglican tradition since the 16th century. Leaming’s “Bowling Saloon”. Today Mrs Fenlin’s property is home to the Saltwood House, the Merchants property was split in half with the Puffin on one side and a private home owned by Jim and Laura Zeitler on the other, and the Prince Edward Inn has replaced the Bowling Saloon. – Ben Miller

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
OMETIMES, common sense does prevail. Witness the decision by Cape May City Council to replace some of the electronic parking meters that have been confounding tourists (AND locals) ever since they were installed four years ago. This column spent much of the summer criticizing the meters, which were a bad idea for so many reasons, and let’s once again list those reasons, because – while we feel the city has made a good decision – the council hasn’t gone far enough: 1. They were introduced specifically so that tourists could pay for parking with credit cards, rather than fish around for quarters. But credit cards failed to work on a very regular basis. Hardly a day went by when we would stroll around town and NOT see a visitor being driven nuts. 2. The signage was abysmal. More often than not, a tourist wouldn’t even know there was a meter system in place. One unexpected parking ticket + one angry tourist = a fair chance of said tourist not returning. 3. Even if you DID by chance see a sign that said you had to pay for parking, your next challenge was figuring out the number of your parking bay. The numbers that were painted on the curb were easily chipped away, often rendered illegible, and sometimes they disappeared altogether. On some of the spaces on Ocean Street you actually have to walk on to the road to see the number, which sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. 4. It’s very difficult to read the meter display in sunlight, due to the screen’s ref lective surface.

IT HAS always seemed shockingly unfair that the owners of bed and breakfast inns, motels and hotels had to add 14% in various taxes onto their bills, while those who rake in tens of thousands of dollars every summer by renting their condos or private homes paid nothing in taxes. No wonder that, in recent years, B&Bs have either been sold or converted into condos, a trend that is NOT good news for Cape May. So, we’re happy to see that the city is backing the progress of a bill called the Seaside Lodging and Rental District Act, which would level the playing field and apply a total tax of 7% to all of the above. Let’s face it, 14% is a HUGE add-on to any bill and it can only have hurt the motel and hotel business in Cape May, as well as other seaside resorts in New Jersey. And the great news is that, according to calculations made by the Cape May Hotel/Motel Owners Association, Cape May would receive more than $3 million a year as a result of this new tax, and a third of that, by law, would have to be spent on tourism promotion. Right now, a pathetic amount of money (in our opinion) is spent on promoting tourism in Cape May. By contrast, Ocean City had billboards along Route 95 in Philadelphia just before the Walt Whitman bridge into New Jersey. We’re not sure how effective it was, but it’s a potent reminder to potential tourists. ANOTHER thank you is in order for Lucky Bones bartender Bill Miller. The music at Lucky Bones was markedly better this past Saturday, and he assured us that is was all his doing.

5. It’s very difficult to read the meter display in sunlight, due to the screen’s lack of illumination. That’s a LOT of things going wrong with one pesky parking meter. Which is why we urge City Manager Bruce MacLeod and the city council members to replace every single one of these critters. Bruce told city council last week that only 40 of the new meters would be replaced – on streets between Beach Avenue and the mall. Bruce said that the problem with the meters was the lack of signage. “That was due to our nice tree-lined streets,” he added. Um, Bruce... what about the other problems listed above? And were the streets not all nicely tree-lined when the city decided to install the new system? Tree-lined streets aren’t a new phenomenon in Cape May. Bruce also said the city hoped tourists would have become familiar with the new system by now but admitted that “we’ve gone beyond the point” where people would have worked them out. Exactly, Bruce! We’ve gone way beyond that point. So replace the whole damn lot of them. Last year Bruce also told us that the city had

Jazz Festivals Puts The ‘Cool’ In Cool Cape May

C
ONTRARY to rumors that have been circulating over the past several months, the Cape May Jazz Festival is alive and well. This will become evident on the weekend of November 12-14 when the 34th Cape May Jazz Festival (sponsored by the Bank of America) electrifies the city of Cape May as it has done for the past 17 years. The Cape May Jazz Festival has music for young and old. From straight-ahead jazz, to Latin jazz and blues, from young guns to seasoned masters, this festival’s music appeals to all audiences. The festival will feature several changes: the headliner performances will be held at the Star of the Sea auditorium rather than the LCMR High School Performing Arts Center. While the LCMRPAC is a state of the art facility, the move to the Star of the Sea auditorium keeps all of our patrons in Cape May, where they can enjoy the wonderful shops at the Washington Street Mall, and some of the finest restaurants in the state. This new partnership presents opportunities in support of our mission to preserve the original American art form we know as jazz. This new partnership ensures a bright and exciting future for the Cape May Jazz festival.
There’s no better way to prepare for this festival than to enjoy a sneak peek preview of the schedule of performances. The festival kicks off on Friday, November 12 with the multi-Grammy Award-winning Yellowjackets. Now in their 25th year, the Yellowjackets continue to expand and redefine musical movements. The Yellowjackets boast a line-up that has produced some unforgettable performances, making them a band that continues to grow. They will be performing at the Star of the Sea auditorium at 8 and 10pm. Other performances taking place Friday night include the Terell Stafford Quintet at the Victorian Gardens at the Marquis de Lafayette at 9 and 10pm. Terell Stafford is a gifted and versatile trumpet player with a voice all his own. His quintet features jazz legends Tim Warfield on sax, Pat Bianchi on organ, Chris Beck on drums, and Daniel Sadownick on percussion. In Carney’s Other Room, in her first performance at the Cape May Jazz Festival, Taeko performs three sets from 9pm-1am. A singer with a voice all her own, this native of Japan has assimilated the all-American art form of jazz with astonishing originality. Bearing touches of her many influences, from Ella Fitzgerald to Anita Baker, while remaining distinctly herself, Taeko takes each song she sings and makes it her own. In the mood for some Friday night blues? Then head on over to Cabanas where the Jonny Hirsch Blues Band, performs three sets from 9pm-1am. The 28-year-old singer/ guitarist is often compared to the likes of Jamiroquai, Steely Dan, and Tower of Power. Fusing together elements of rock, funk, jazz, and skat singing with a powerful voice and a dynamic saxophone, Jonny’s music has taken on a genre all of its own. The workshops include a beginner’s guitar workshop with Bob DeVos; advanced guitar workshop with Monnette Sudler; and a saxophone workshop with Tim Price. All three workshops are held from 11-12 noon. From noon-1pm a percussion jam for youth and adults will be held with Marc Jacopec and company. Immediately following the workshops you can enjoy the Saturday afternoon jam sessions. Jazz Festival ? From Page 29 Room is long-time festival favorite Bill McGrady along with invited guests from 1-4pm. The well-known blues jam takes place with the Tom Larsens Blues Band from 1-4pm. The fun continues Saturday night when Javon Jackson featuring the legendary Les McCann performs two shows at 6:30 and 8:30pm at the Star of the Sea auditorium. Javon Jackson and Les McCann bring an exhilarating mix to the Cape May Jazz Festival. Javon Jackson came into international prominence as a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Music legend and pianist Les McCann began his career in the early 1960s when he recorded with his trio for Pacific Jazz Records. In 1969, Atlantic Records released Swiss Movement, which featured political criticism of the Vietnam War. After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann began emphasizing his vocals, becoming an innovator in the soul jazz style. Other performances taking place on Saturday night include Ralph Petersons’s Unity Project featuring Sean Jones and Gary Thomas at Victorian Gardens at the Marquis de Lafayette with two performances at 9 and 11pm. Ralph Peterson made his recording debut with Blue Note Records up-and–coming allstar group Out of the Blue. This dynamic trio is not to be missed. Over at Carney’s Other Room the Bob DeVos Trio will present a sound to die for; rich, full, deep, positive, round and warm. Bob DeVos has been hailed as a master playing with such jazz greats as Ralph Bowen, Freddy Cole, Etta Jones, and Danny Valentin, to name a few. The Bob DeVos Trio plays three sets from 9pm-1am. Looking for some Latin jazz? Then get ready for 3D Ritmo de Vida performing at Carney’s Main Room with three sets from 9pm to 1am. 3D Ritmo de Vida is a Latin dance band led by drummer Michael Tate. The band exudes a Latin tropical mix of funky salsa and Caribbean
Soul with a New York attitude. The bands hot Latin rhythms combined with sizzling vocals will have everyone out of their seats. Still wanting for more blues? Then head back over to Cabanas where the Chris Bergson Blues Band will be rocking the house with three sets from 9pm-1am. Acclaimed New York-based guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Chris Bergson creates his own blend of rootsy blues and soul. Looking to just chill a little bit with a unique twist? Then head over to the Boiler Room at Congress Hall where vibraphonist Joe Baione will play three sets from 9-1am. Joe Baione has a passion for all things jazz. His energetic performances on the vibes make audiences sit up and notice because of his unique style. The Cape May jazz tradition at Aleathea’s continues with two performances by acclaimed vocalist Demetria Bailey at 8:30 and 11pm. Demetria Bailey has a great presence and connects with her audience like no other performer. Her range of songs cover such standards as Hoagy Carmichael’s “Skylark” and Harold Arlen’s “Stormy Weather” to the ‘50s hit for the Platters, “Only You”, which is given a whole new structure as a solo. Demetria mixes the musical genres throughout her performance with some real surprises. Sunday marks the closing day of this great music festival. The day starts with long-time jazz festival favorites Little Jazz Giants performing the pre-jam at Carney’s Main Room from 12-12:50pm. This young group of musical prodigies continues to wow the audience every year! Another long-time festival favorite, Jordan Williams and the Young Jazz Lions performs the other pre-jam session in Carney’s Other Room at the same time. This highly talented group of “young lions” continues to bring the audience to their feet at every festival. The final super jams of the festival take place from 1-4pm

It’s true that the festival has faced challenging times recently with the weakened economy, the lack of a Convention Hall, and the recent reorganization; however, I’m sure you agree that the line-up for this festival is clear evidence that the Cape May Jazz Festival will be around for many years to come. The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HEN I was a little girl, I would daydream about a studio apartment in Manhattan, an igloo in Alaska, and my very own hut in a Polynesian kingdom. I thought I’d learn Spanish in South America. While my friends f lipped through Cosmopolitan, I clipped photos from National Geographic. Don’t get me wrong; I love Cape May. It’s a beautiful place, and I’m proud to call it home, but it’s not exactly a portrait of cultural diversity. Sometimes, a gal finds herself craving a little culture shock. When I was 12, I begged my parents to send me to Peru. They sent me to North Jersey for summer camp instead. I hated it, but reveled in the change of scenery. I was away from home, and that was enough to make up for a few mosquito bites. For someone who’s caught the travel bug, waiting tables in a fancy restaurant can be difficult. Last week, I served a couple in the midst of a three-year long hiatus sailing around the globe. “Take me with you,” I said. They chuckled, until they real-
ized I was serious. “Please,” I said, “I’ll swab the deck! Cook the meals! Amuse you with silly pirate impersonations!” I ended the night ready to quit my job, take what tips I’d earned, and board the next f light to Nepal or Brazil or any place with more culture than this fine little restaurant in this quaint little town. I realized that I have yet to see a Polynesian kingdom, and the only Spanish I’ve learned has come from hanging out with line cooks. “Molly,” Alberto reminds me nightly, “your Spanish is not muy bueno.’” So there I was, fed up with this provincial place and feeling very sorry for myself. Self-righteously mopey, and wanting to
drink away my sorrows, I attended a party with all of my coworkers. Five beers deep, I had an epiphany. What looked like an episode of MTV’s Jersey Shore – 15 of us drinking cheap beer in a hot tub – was more like a meeting of the culinary UN. I work with Ecuadorian cooks, Brazilian chefs, Romanian waitresses, and Bulgarian busboys. On a hectic Saturday night, I hear an array of curse words, in different languages and dialects, coming from all corners of the kitchen, like profane music to my ears. I sit down to a pre-shift meal with bartenders from Latvia, hostesses from the Philippines, dishwashers from Mexico, managers from New York, and pastry chefs from Russia. Were I to leave this fine little restaurant in this quaint little town, I’m not sure I’d ever find this much culture at my fingertips. And that would be a terrible shame, I think. Having the opportunity to connect with so much diversity, to share a beer with people totally unlike myself every now and again, is a good thing. In fact, it’s more than good, I’d say. It’s muy bueno.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
REMEMBER the first time we had a vampire in Cape May. It happened not long after I had my collection of Fabergé eggs shipped from St Petersburg ahead of the Communists and the cargo vessel arrived off The Point, empty and ragged of sail. I assumed the crew had been lured by the siren sounds of Wildwood and thought nothing of it, dispatching my serving men aboard to remove the cargo. There was a rough, scratched message on the deck, and a lot of dried brown stains and signs of violence. I thought the message read “Umpires,” and assumed there had been a hotly-disputed cricket match on board, that ended, as many do, in violence. Not long after, I was plagued by what I took to be an unseasonal mosquito in the D’Catur manse. Every morning I rose from bed with welts on my neck which I was pressed to conceal with a silk ascot. The Young Albert of the day was grumpy, too, I recall, always barking at shadows. I grew weaker, and had awful dreams, but still didn’t twig: we D’Caturs are made

of tough stuff and also, you will recall, I have drank of the Fountain of Youth, and so am really, to all intents and purposes, indestructible, except by… well, enough of those sorts of details, eh? One morning I awoke shading my eyes from the bright light, and realized that I was not in the mood for my usual egg-and-garlic omelette, and when I picked up my silver hand mirror from the bedside table I was horrified to see the headboard BEHIND me, through my own slightly ghostly ref lection,

plus the handle of the mirror burned like fire. I realized that the twin punctures on my neck were not a mosquito’s work at all. Well, I may be slow on the uptake but I am quick to act, and I sprang from bed and ran to the weapons chest I keep by the loo, in case I am ever surprised whilst on the throne. I rummaged through, discarding pistols and swords. I did not have any stakes but did come across a box of toothpicks and seized them. I was expecting to have a long search in the basement, for surely the fiend was in one of the crates from Russia, but then I heard snoring from under the bed. I crept up and what did I see but, wedged there, a remarkably fat vampire. He had been suckling on my own supernaturally rich blood for weeks and was as fat as a gorged tick. In the event, all I had to do was prick him lightly with a toothpick and the fiend exploded in a shower of entrails and blood, which remarkably and luckily burst into f lame and left little in the way of mess, just ashes and a set of sharp teeth that I have mounted on the wall.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz
HAD the pleasure of seeing The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at the Cape May Stage on Saturday with my husband, following an impromptu decision while strolling through Washington Street Mall. I remembered that tickets could be purchased from the information booth across from Our Lady Star of the Sea and we decided to check out the availability. Oddly enough, there were only two tickets left. After strolling over to Dog Days of Cape May, we took the plunge and bought the tickets. The night had its usual, predictable path. Dinner and drinks at the Mad Batter (pork tenderloin and crab cakes), shopping, enjoying the crisp, autumn air… all a precursor to what ended up being a fabulous event. Although we had tickets, we arrived appropriately early (7:20pm) and huddled outside the playhouse door. Although there was the brief annoyance of being cut in line under the premise of “Gosh, it’s cold. Let’s see if the door is open. Look at that! It is open. Let’s just cut this couple who has
been standing here for 15 minutes. Surely, they won’t mind.” For the record, cutting in any line is a pet peeve of mine. I’m from the traditional mindset of “Wait your turn.” In the end, the line-cutters served a very pleasing purpose — they allowed us to get second-row aisle seats. We were ushered into the impeccable theater and eased into the comfortable seating. We were both unsure what to expect. We’ve had our fair share of exposure to various forms of Shakespeare (I myself love
the Leonardo DiCaprio version of Romeo & Juliet). The house lights dimmed, and the show started. The play condenses 37 plays and 154 sonnets into a two-hour event, during which the audience spent most of its time managing bursts of uncontrollable laughter. The culprits of this outpour of emotion? Three of the best stage actors I’ve ever seen — Mark Irish, Jake Paque, and David Schmittou. The play took serious, dramatic dialogue and recreated hysterical antics. Shakespeare’s most notable comedies were even funnier. Just when we thought the unthinkable was accomplished, the actors performed Hamlet in reverse. That is… reverse dialogue and motion. Brilliant! I also loved how after the show, the actors immediately greeted the audience. This play is a phenomenal way to spend two hours on a Thursday-Sunday evening or Saturday and Sunday afternoon through November 20. The amazing talent and smart dialogue are refreshing and entertaining, and you will be discussing this show long after the curtain has closed.

F YOU’RE lucky enough to make Cape May your home base, even for a few days, you never want to leave. But if your friends want to deal you in for a road trip to Atlantic City, you may want to ante up, especially when their ace in the hole is an overnight babysitter. A spontaneous trip to AC is always fun. Take the Garden State Parkway north for an hour or so, and you’ll find yourself in America’s Playground. Atlantic City boasts 11 casinos. Most – the Hilton, Showboat, Tropicana, Caesars, Bally’s, Trump Plaza, and Trump Taj Mahal and Resorts, are located along the boardwalk; follow signs for the marina to find the Borgata, Trump Marina, and Harrah’s. The billboards on the way – or the coupons you got in the mail – will help you choose your destination. Pay five dollars to park and keep the receipt, since you can move your car to another casino without having to pay again. Lean times mean bargains for gamblers (keep your eyes out for the dollar blackjack tables) and non-gamblers alike (look for special spa rates). Weeknights and early
mornings are good times to learn new table games without annoying the more experienced gamblers. Your dealer will advise you to ignore any nasty comments from your tablemates. If they knew it all, they wouldn’t be sitting with you at the five dollar table. You can find quality singers at casino lounges for the price of a cocktail, or visit the House of Blues for some late–night music. If you’re ready to strap on your dancing shoes, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to show

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.
R
ECENTLY, a guy named Marty invited me on his boat. Excited to be on the water with such a gentleman, I wore my prettiest sundress. At sunset, we sat together on the stern. Marty commented on the blue of my eyes. I batted my lashes the best I know how. Then Marty stood up, dropped trou, and peed off the edge. “Hand me a beer, babe?” he said, midstream. As a little girl, whenever I’d put on my plastic tiara and picture riding off into the sunset with my white knight, I never imagined him peeing off the side of our horse. Gentlemen, it seems, are a dying breed. But try explaining this at Thanksgiving dinner or a family reunion, where no one can understand why you haven’t found yourself a “nice boy” yet. I can’t exactly tell Great Aunt Helen that I’ll bring home the first guy who doesn’t whip it out in public, so I keep my mouth shut. I ignore the second cousin who points to her watch, mimicking the finite nature of my biological clock. “Tick-tock,” she says. I’m tempted to launch into a lecture about the modern, self-sufficient woman
who doesn’t need a man to define her, and the vulgarity of twenty-first century dating. But I shovel more potato salad into my mouth and nod politely instead. Eventually, though, I get lonely. I start wondering if my second cousin isn’t right. So what if the men here think burping the alphabet is a marketable skill? Who cares if they honk in the driveway instead of coming to the door? This is a dating desert, and beggars can’t be choosers. Tick-tock.
So I make a vow; I will not spend another day alone. I trade in my cardigan sweater for a slinky pink dress, do three shots of whiskey, and head for Carney’s. I hit the dance floor with the same uninhibited booty shake as the other girls. Soon, I feel a pair of hands on my waist. Even in my whiskey-induced haze, I wonder when men stopped asking women to dance, when they started gyrating behind them instead. The hands belong to a guy who is sweaty and looks like Elmer Fudd, but I put it out of my mind. Tick-tock, I think. Then the song changes from something about hoes in a Range Rover to something about Fergie’s humps. I watch a girl in a mini-skirt dry hump a pole in the corner as men leer at her from behind. I stop dancing. “What’s the problem?” Elmer asks. I think about it for a moment. Life is short, and spending any part of it dancing to songs about humps with a sweaty cartoon seems like an incredible waste of time. “What’s the problem?” he asks again, but I shrug my shoulders and walk away. “Tick-tock,” I say, “tick-tock.”

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger”
W
HAT can you say about Woody Allen? You either love him or hate him, right? Well, I’m sort of in between. I judge the veteran director/writer/actor on the value of his work. He has no laurels on which to rest with me. Over the course of his fairly decorated career, he has had some real flops, some genius hits, and a wide range in between. In his latest film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, it is safe to say that if you fall on the “hate him” side of the aforementioned pendulum, it’s best to stay away. This relationship film begins with a typical Allen premise: complicated people in complicated relationships. His character development is nearly always artful, as is his production. In fact, you could say that for a studio film, Allen does consistently maintain an arthouse cinema style. But with Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins in lead roles, you could hardly say this was an indie. Now this is the part of my review where I usually offer some summary of the storyline.

I’ll mention characters, reveal a little of the plot turns, and generally try to give you a sense of the film. Right? Well, let me just sum this film up in one word: kvetching. The Yiddish word that means “to complain, especially chronically.” Despite some interesting plot twists, there was just a lot of complaining in this film. There were some moments of genius (this is Woody Allen, after all) and even some poignant moments,
but overall the film was mundane. So Woody Allen fans will find reason to enjoy this film (but not love it), and those who hate Allen will not even go. Film Festival Wrap-Up: What a blast the Film Festival was! And the fun continues at the Noyes Museum of Art in Oceanville, New Jersey. The Cape May Film Festival is one of those programs that is a state-wide favorite, and Noyes is the first stop on our tour throughout the state. In the upcoming year we’ll visit theaters, art galleries, high schools, and other venues. One of the films we will be showing at the Noyes Museum is the Cape May hit, Someplace Warm, which had its world premiere at the Cape May Film Festival to a packed house who all thought it was fantastic. It turns out John Alvarez, one of the stars of the film, is an alumni of Stockton College, which now runs the Noyes Museum of Art. Several innkeepers in town have offered veterans a free night’s stay at their establishments on November 10. Mark Kulkowitz of the Mad Batter and Carroll Villa invites veterans to attend a halfprice happy hour from 4-6pm, and then an optional 30% discounted dinner. The hotel is booked for the evening, and each room goes to a veteran for a good night’s rest. The following day guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast at the Mad Batter.
Veterans from World War II gathered in the Mad Batter a few years ago for a honorary meal. The Mad Batter and Carroll Villa will offer a similar event for all veterans on Wednesday.
Kulkowitz anticipates an event where “guys of all ages, from WWII, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and more” can come together to celebrate the sacrifices they’ve made for their country. Kulkowitz is extending the offer through November 28, when veterans
can stay at the Carroll Villa for half-price on Thursday or Sunday nights. Other inns participating in this nationwide initiative include the Queen Victoria, Victorian Lace and the Mainstay Inn.

Eliot, but the folks at Cape May Stage feel that November can be the cruelest month and, so, they mounted a very funny play suitable for the whole family – The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) plays through November 20th. To celebrate Veterans’ Day, PNC Arts Alive has sponsored a Veterans’ Night on November 11 with special discounts for all veterans and their families. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a three-person parody of all of Shakespeare’s plays in ninety minutes. You don’t need to know a thing about Shakespeare as these improvisational comedians take you on a roller coaster ride that is all mayhem. Cape May Stage brought in a Guest Director who is the Artistic Director of the Colonial Shakespeare Festival. Harland Meltzer is a respected Shakespearean director who is having fun taking a break from the serious stuff to use his vast knowledge in pursuit of a cheap laugh. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg has known Harland Meltzer for decades and has directed at Harland’s theatre on numerous occasions. They both love good actors and Harland has assembled a first rate cast to entertain Cape May Stage audiences. Prepare to laugh yourself silly as this piece makes no pretense of being anything but a good time. The author will fly in from California to sign copies of this text, which lists Cape May Stage as having produced the world premiere. From Page 87 East Lynne Theater Company will combine their annual gala with a Veterans Day celebration in their “Stage Door Canteen” event on Thursday, November 11, at Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May, 7 Ocean Street. From Page 93 James stood as if he’d just been shocked. “You don’t think…” “I do,” Farley said. “I think we’ve found our Holy Grail, James.” “Do you have any idea what this will do for our credibility?” “The credibility of the paranormal field as a whole, James.” “The implications are staggering.” “Guys,” Jack interrupted them. “Mind sharing?” Farley took the f loor like a professor lecturing a Paranormal 101 class. “In 1943,” he explained, “the US Department of Defense attempted to weaponize Einstein’s theory of relativity and unified fields, to use it as a means of hiding our warships from enemy radar.” Jack asked, “How so?” Farley answered, “By bending light around the ships to make them invisible from detection by conventional radar. In July they engaged their first tests on a test vessel, the USS Eldredge. Only her captain, a man named Reno, knew of the test.” Will asked, “What happened?” “Well, according to legend, the test went off as planned and worked. Too well,

Farley ignored him, “Not only that, it is rumored the Eldredge also transported through space and time, arriving in Norfolk, Virginia a full two minutes before the experiment took place in Philadelphia.” “The Philadelphia Experiment,” Jack said. “Precisely. Until now, no one has ever been able to confirm it, but unless I’m mistaken, it is my belief that the derelict vessel the Wrecker was sent to destroy was the USS Eldredge, disguised as a fishing boat.” Will asked, “How did they power the experiment?” Farley answered, “That’s the toughest part to prove. The legend persists that a unified field engine was built, designed by Einstein himself. The schematics, and they’ve been attempted by the most brilliant scientists living today, proved impossible to duplicate. The engine was basically a cold fusion reactor, creating thousands, maybe millions of amps of power using virtually no fuel. It was used to power the experiment but overdrove all the systems; the Philadelphia Navy Yard was inoperable for months afterward. No machin-

There’s only a few pages left in this thing.” “Ten minutes,” Will said firmly and looked at his watch. “Huh, my watch stopped.” “Mine too,” Geoff said. In fact, all their watches had stopped. Their cell phones were dead as well. “The static shock,” Jack assured them. “We’ll be out of here in a few minutes. Don’t go pear-shaped on me now.” Will started, “Jack…” Jack wheeled on him. “I’m not leaving until we figure this out! You want me to leave? You better call the National Guard.” His words echoed brief ly in the metal room. Jack was instantly chagrined by yelling at his brother, but he stood firm. If they wanted him to leave they’d have to carry him out. “Fine,” Will said. Jack turned back to the journal. *** The Wrecker – August 4, 1943 Captain Wilson Fisk sat in the wheel
house of the Wrecker, a cold sweat over his body. He was scared. Not only did the discovery of the strange device aboard the derelict have him ill at ease, but the walk back to the Wrecker had been fraught with strange occurrences. The derelict, at first bereft of any sign of human occupation, now showed ample evidence that it had been populated, that people had lived on it. And died on it. Or worse. One of his crew, a stout Dane, reported seeing a figure walking on the bow, which then f lickered away and disappeared as he approached. Another, this one a battlescarred Russian veteran of the Great War, saw a face in a mirror. A third, a Croat who had allegedly killed a half-dozen men with his bare hands, reported what looked like a human hand, though a human hand crafted of iron, in the derelict’s command deck. And Wilson himself saw what appeared to be a man’s face etched in the steel wall of a long, dark hallway. These were not frightened school children having terrors in the night, these were grown men who’d seen horrors greater than could be conjured in a dream. And they were spooked. And Wilson was spooked. For the first time in his adult life. He now watched

The derelict engine had proved too unwieldy and solidly fashioned to the f loor to move, so the two ships remained tethered by grappling hook and rope. A long series of electric cables, one piggybacked to the next, tied the Wrecker’s engine to that of the derelict. As the work was done, Wilson scribbled into his journal a hasty recollection of the events of the past week. Should anything happen to them, it could serve as a warning to future sailors. “Take this,” he had said and handed the book to John. “Take a man, take a torch, make a hole. Hide it. I don’t want to know where.” “Aye, Captain,” John replied bravely. “And brother,” Wilson said. John looked at him with wet eyes. “All will be well.” John smiled unconvincingly and left. Somehow, Wilson knew it would be the last time he’d ever see his brother alive. Now the work was done and the crew waited at their stations, anxious to fire up the Wrecker’s engines and leave this place. Lonegan, the ship’s engineer, was at the derelict engine with a portable radio, walkietalkies they called them in the service, which were the only working electronic devices. Lonegan figured something in their circuitry protected them from the spark blast. That or the fact they’d been stored in a lead-lined locker. Wilson keyed his, “This is the captain, all ready on this end.” “Aye,” Lonegan replied in his soft Scottish burr. “All ready here, cap’n.”
Wilson turned a key on the control panel, “I am now turning over our engines. Anything?” “No,” Lonegan replied. “She’s hummin’, but I don’t think she’s on. Wait… standby.” “What is it?” “The smaller device, there’s a switch. Should I f lip it, cap’n?” Captain Wilson Fisk took one last look at his crew, thought fondly of his brother and home, and said, “Aye, chief. Flip the switch.” “Flipping the switch.” There was a long pause. “Lonegan?” “Hold, sir, she seems to be powering up. I think she…” CRACK! Both ships exploded in green sparks that rained down and hissed as they hit the water. Wilson looked onto the deck but did not believe what he saw. “Wilson!” a voice shouted. It was John, staggering onto the command deck. Wilson ran to his brother and held him. “I love you, boy.” The Wrecker began to vibrate with increasing ferocity and the sound of screaming metal filled the night sky. Wilson opened his eyes and saw the impossible; his men, his crew, his boat, were multiplying, dividing, disappearing before his eyes. Then they were whole again, then they were not. It was madness and Wilson would have none of it. He sat John down in his chair, kissed his cheek, “Stay here, boy!” He ran to the bow and intended to cross the catwalk to the derelict, but with a loud BOOM the two ships were suddenly drawn together like great magnets. The barrels that had buffered them splintered and exploded into kindling. As Wilson watched, the two ships pressed together, then the two ships began to melt together. “This cannot be…” Slowly, the Wrecker was drawn into the derelict and the two ships began to merge into one. was now peopled with men, men in military uniforms, all suffering the same madness as the crew of the Wrecker. “The missing crew…” Wilson said to himself with the realization that the other men who appeared on the deck were the ghostly echoes of whatever unfortunate souls had crewed the derelict ship. “Dear God…” Screams and prayers filled the night as the ships turned further into each other. The ghastly sound of twisting metal joined the screaming voices in a hellish cacophony. Wilson looked down at his hand, tried to find some sort of mortal bearing, but saw only that his fingers had now been absorbed into the steel railing. Or were his fingers absorbing the metal? He prayed, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name…” All around the merging ships the seas stood up in a swirling vortex. Fierce winds buffeted the deck and the dark sky grew black as storm clouds gathered. Lightning f lashed and struck the radar tower of the Wrecker. The black sky turned a bruised green and sparks jumped off of every metal surface on both ships. CRACK! Then all was madness again, the men and ships f loating into pieces over here and reassembling, not quite whole, over there. Arms reached out from steel walls. Men fused together in nightmarish, spidery clusters of arms, legs and heads. The unearthly hiss that escaped their throats sent chills up Wilson’s spine. “Hallowed be thy name…” As he felt the coldness of the steel travel up his arm, he tried as best he could to remain calm and prepare for the last few moments of his mortal life. “Wilson,” came a voice. He turned to see his baby brother John, or what was left of his baby brother John, crab-

But rather than scream and cry with the insanity claiming those around him, John looked serene and at ease with his fate. “Thy kingdom come…” Wilson reached out to his brother, unable to pull away from the iron railing that had claimed his f lesh, though he tugged at it anyway. John pulled himself the last few agonizing feet, wrapped his arms around his brother’s legs and held him tight. “Thy will be done…” Wilson patted his brother on the head. John looked up and smiled with red, wet eyes. His skin had turned a sickly shade of green and Wilson knew John was at his end. “Thank you, Wilson,” John said and promptly died. A tear finally formed in Wilson’s eye as he looked, once again, at the impossible madness that swirled around him. But there he was. As the two ships neared the end of their metamorphosis, Wilson saw another man suddenly standing next to him. Or rather, he saw the echo of a man standing next to him, a shimmery green vision that f luttered in the worsening weather. The ghost man wore official military garb and Wilson could just make out the name above the breast pocket: Capt.Reno. Wilson looked at Reno. Reno looked back.
