The Police Blotter
GRASS VALLEY, CA: A man from the 200 block of Race Street called the Grass Valley Police Department at 8:30pm to report seeing a man’s face in a mortuary window, and he believed a person had been buried alive. When asked by a dispatcher if it could have been an employee, the man said, “No, you should have seen his face.” – The Union
Learn Russian With Tanya
YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we condemn such acts. We at Exit Zero embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson in communication. Please note – this “Russian” is our phonetic interpretation. Do people in your country actually wear those fur hats with the ear flaps? Liudi v vashei strane nosiat shapki-ushanki? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Da, no v moei strane ih pervonachalno nosili soldaty, v etoi strane -- bitniki. Which translates to: Yes, but in my country they were originally worn by soldiers; in this country they were originally worn by hipsters. – Tanya Zotava
Weird Word Of The Week
Scutching The first step in preparing flax for spinning, this word refers to the process of beating the flax to remove the straw and stem.
A Story From The Past
Don Pocher
THIS amazing shot portrays everyday life in 1880s Cape May. The young girl in the horse-drawn buggy is sitting at the intersection of Ocean Street and Beach Drive, as evidenced by the open-air pavilion in the background – which predated Convention Hall – and the beginning of the boardwalk just behind her attendant. The trolleys that you see ran from Sewell’s Point, the site of today’s Coast Guard base, through Cape May and South Cape May to Cape May Point. – Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what dining room you are peering into, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
THE Audubon Society, created years after its namesake’s death, was founded in the late 1800s in large part to protect birds from milliners (hat makers). It was very fashionable at the time to decorate hats with the entire body of a bird.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J A man without aim is like a clock without hands, as useless if it turns as if it stands. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with sesame chicken, chicken pad thai and mango chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
HE Exit Zero team experienced a disappointment this past Friday after arriving late to Congress Hall’s tree-lighting ceremony. According to our own trustworthy rag, the ceremony ran until 10pm and culminated in the tree-lighting. It seems that “culminating” lends itself to varying interpretations, because guests were already pouring out the front doors when we arrived at 9pm. We scuttled our way through the crowd of exiting parents and children beneath the red-and-green illuminated pillars, past the impromptu bar in the lobby and out into the courtyard where the immense pine was alight with countless bulbs. We were fortunate enough to catch some of the free cookies and quickly hopped in line at the Winter Wonderland bar. There we had hot chocolate with vanilla vodka or peppermint schnapps and grabbed handfuls of mini marshmallows from the toppings selection. We strolled the lawn with drinks in hand, visiting the various vending stalls and found the Flying Fish’s frozen owner, Sue Lotozo, peddling her finger-less “texting” gloves. The evening produced positive reviews of the very Terry O’ke choir – a group compromising many Terry O’ke regulars like Chris South, Frank Scott and even Terry O’Brien – that led holiday sing-a-longs. Exit Zero delivery man Rico Hemenway was overjoyed. “I had a solo tonight!” Rico proudly stated, “No, I didn’t sing – I played the woodblock!” HERE’S the bad news… there are only three more issues of Exit Zero this year before our six-week winter slumber (during which time we work harder than Santas’ freakin’ elves, but we don’t need to go into that right now). Now, the good news… you
get to look forward to THE big event of Cape May’s winter calendar. We are referring to the SEVENTH Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, held at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 27. This event has become a sell-out gig every year, which we’re very pleased about because: 1. Proceeds go to Cape May Stage’s Preservation Fund, which was set up to maintain the theater company’s beautiful building on Lafayette Street; and 2. Sell-out gigs are much more fun. For those readers who don’t have a clue what we’re going on about (and surely you are in the minority by now), the event celebrates Scotland’s most famous poet, Rabbie Burns, who wrote, among many other things, “Auld Lang Syne.” And the reason we celebrate him is because EZ’s publisher is Scottish, which might strike you as a tenuous reason for having such an event, but just go with it. The event features Scottish singalongs, poetry recitals, and bagpipes played by the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade. Those burly men doing laps around the bar while pumping out such classics as “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave” is enough to give a grown man
goosebumps (and does every time). The Burns Supper also features, at its heart, that most controversial and misunderstood food: the haggis. Or, as it’s known in Scotland, the haggis. Many Americans still refuse to sample this fine food, which is such a shame, because, trust us, it is no longer made up of all sorts of offal (deliberate usage) things wrapped in a sheep’s stomach – it’s simply choice meat mixed with oatmeal and spices. In other words, delicious. Now don’t be a wuss and try some. For those who simply won’t, there will be fish ‘n’ chips. Tickets for the event are STILL $30 (just as they were at the inaugural event, in 2005). Trust us, you need to reserve them in advance because tickets will almost certainly not be available at the door. To buy them, you can either call us at (609) 770-8479 or buy them from our website at www.exitzero.us. You can also mail us a check (see our address on the inside back page) or stop by the office. Either way, be there. And there’s a bonus this time around: the Mug has installed nifty wooden booths, which have added to the capacity and which also allow for a more intimate experience. IF YOU drove your car into the side of an orange-red (official color ‘Sunburst’) parked on Second Avenue, at the junction of Goldbeaten Alley after the Christmas parade, now is the chance to clear your conscience – surely it must be heavy. If you call Jack at the EZ office, he promises you won’t be cited for leaving the scene of an accident. He’d just like your insurance to pick up the tab, the way it’s supposed to work. It’s probably no more than a few hundred dollars worth of damage.

Artists Cooperative Plans Holiday Art Extravaganza The ballroom of the Wilbraham Mansion will be decked with local art this weekend
T
HE Cape May Artists Cooperative Gallery has organized an event-full weekend from December 10-12. Festivities begin on Friday night at 6pm in the Wilbraham Mansion on 133 Myrtle Avenue in West Cape May with a reception for the Holiday Art Extravaganza sale. More than 20 local artists will present new art, great for gift-giving. Many of the artists have made Christmas ornaments as well. On Saturday the sale runs from 10am9pm and will be open to tour-goers when they visit the Mansion during MAC’s Christmas Candlelight House Tour. Featured artists include Diana Cutshall’s seed bead jewelry, Diane Flanagan’s quirky stained glass, and Louise Zemaitis’ butterfly-related art prints. On Sunday the Co-op will participate in the Second Sunday Gallery Walk. The Gallery Walk is a partnership of the Artists Co-op, Gail Pierson Gallery, Splash, SOMA Gallery, Spirit Catcher Gallery and the Mad Batter and runs from 1-5pm. Second Sunday featured artists at the Co-op are fiber artists Lisa Bernstein and Mary Stewart and photographer Anita Roth. In the 23 years that fiber artist Lisa
Anita Roth’s beach-inspired photographs will be on display at the Wilbraham Mansion.
Bernstein has lived in West Cape May she has fallen in love and raised a family. She declares West Cape May as “a place that nurtures community and general quirkiness.” She works for sustainability in her life and art. Taking unwanted sweaters, Lisa Bernstein turns them into new objects such as hats, pillows and messenger bags.
Mary Stewart is a fiber artist who has been sewing since her childhood. A BA in Fine Arts from Rosemont College helped her develop her sense of design, color and texture. Mary “enjoys the challenge of taking two-dimensional raw materials and creating three-dimensional pieces. Each piece is unique. I let the texture and hand of the fabric dictate what it will become.” Anita Roth began taking photos five years ago and was quickly hooked on the medium. She is largely self-taught and likes to work with macro focus, showing the tiny details in everyday things like flowers and shells. The time Anita spends on photography helps her relax. Anita explains, “I just go for a walk with my camera with no plans for what I am going to photograph. I am always honored when people see that beauty and enjoy my images.” The Artists’ Cooperative is a group of 28 local artists who showcase their work and educate the public about their art. November’s featured artists and others from the Cooperative will meet the public and discuss their work. The Artists Cooperative Gallery is open Friday through Monday from 10am-6pm. Call (609)770-8261 for information.

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape May
I
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts prepares a packed calender of Christmas events
T’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns are decorated for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. The festivities continue all the way through January 2. Take a trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! There is holiday entertainment for every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

Customer Service
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
I
USED to be a person with a lot of chutzpah. If something seemed unjust, I spoke up. When I became a server, I had to learn to let injustice roll off of my back like water off of a duck. When people bark orders or demand food, I’ve got no choice but to smile graciously or nod apologetically. In order to keep my job, I keep my mouth shut, no matter how out of line a customer may be. There is only one instance in which it’s acceptable for a waitress to cop an attitude. Lay into a customer for leaving a shoddy tip, and you’re fired. Tell off a guest for calling you “sweetie,” and you can kiss your paycheck goodbye. But if a customer skips out on his bill; it’s go time – all aprons are off, no holds are barred. For this reason, all servers secretly look forward to the moment when a patron will be so brazen as to actually walk out on a check. Recently, I experienced such an event for the first time. I was busy opening a bottle of wine when I happened to notice that the couple on table ten was missing. They’d been rude all night, snapping their
fingers at the bus boy and making fun of other patrons. Adding insult to injury, they didn’t pay for dinner. I figured the couple couldn’t have gotten very far; the woman had been wearing a spandex mini-skirt and five inch heels – not exactly the ideal getaway threads. I could feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins. I decided to chase them through the streets of Cape May. But when I caught up with the couple, I choked. I did get their credit card, but I did not launch into any sort of lecture on basic human decency, and I called them no belittling names. Here was my opportunity to unleash years of pent-up serving frustra-

tions, and I blew it. A girl bites her tongue enough, it seems, and she loses some of her chutzpah. Back in the lobby of the restaurant, I ran the man’s credit card through the machine while he and his wife waited by my side. I was busy cursing myself for being such a wimp and missing my big chance at some retribution, when I noticed the little old lady who’d been dining next to table ten all night. As she walked out of the restaurant, she paused in front of the couple who’d run out on their bill. In her “World’s Greatest Grandma” sweatshirt, she turned to them and said, “I think you are very rude.” Then she turned to me, gave a thumbs-up, and left. I think this is my favorite thing about waiting tables. For every cheapskate who doesn’t believe in gratuity, there’s a customer leaving an overly generous tip behind. For every bossy guest, there’s a gracious patron with a kind word. And for every nincompoop who robs you of your chutzpah, there’s another customer, ready and waiting to dish it out on your behalf.

The Old Fogey
A
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
HAT says a lot about a man, or woman. The absence of one is the sign of a degenerate, a wretch, someone who cares naught for their dignity or style. My dearly departed mother, Ma D’Catur, always used to say that to get the measure of a person, you should go straight to their closet and see how many hats they owned. If they stored more than 20, she advised, marry them there and then. If they owned under five, be wary that they are perhaps mentally deficient. If the ignoble characters has no hats at all, then strike them a terrible blow to the temple and leave the house, pausing only to push some lighted matches under the door. I am less harsh, and would only apply my fists if the closet happens to contain a baseball cap that looks like at some time it has been or will be worn backwards. My own hat collection, of course, spans a large portion of the south wing of the D’Catur Mansion, and spans many years and every continent. There are skimmers and boaters, caps made of wool and caps

made of leather, there are bowlers, toppers, titfers and fezzes. There are berets and bonnets, Tam o’ Shanters and sombreros, Stetsons and Shanghai Shaders, Alpine caps and Viking helmets, hats made of fur, hats of hide, felt and bark. Hats with feathers, hats made OF feathers, hats of every shade in nature. I could go on, but I think you know me well enough to know I am not long-winded or boastful. Every day I wear a hat, whether to note a holiday or national day, a fond memory, or
Extensive collection of cross stitch & needlework designs Custom Framing 315 Ocean Street, Unit 9 Washington Commons Cape May, NJ 08204 1-866-563-5399 • 609-898-9606 stitchbystitchcapemay.com
just to complement my outfit. Sometimes I wear one to keep the rain off, or the snow, and sometimes I wear an aerodynamic one so I can walk faster against a headwind. Also, I tip my hat, a custom that has no hatless equivalent. It signals a cheery hullo, a nod of respect, best wishes for the day. John Wayne, in many respects a swaggering oaf, did know how to tip his hat at the ladies, I must admit. Hats have also saved my life: a Nazi sniper once mistook the shape and size of my tricorner naval hat for the size and shape of my head and shot a hole clean through it. And a charging rhino speared my best and tallest top hat off the top of my head, leaving me unscathed. And once, at Coney Island, I was on the rollercoaster with Henry Ford and Ernie Hemingway and my fine sailor cap fell off my head when at the top of a swoop, only to land back on it at the bottom, with a brand new ten dollar bill somehow inside. I used it to purchase a fine beanie with propeller on top. Treat your hats well, gentlefolk, and they willl treat you well in return.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover
A
An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz
S THE holidays draw near, I find myself bombarded with so many gift ideas I have no idea where to turn. I start with a clean slate, and as the days pass I accumulate catalogs, coupons, email offers, f liers and brochures, all with gift-giving potential. Even the seemingly simple task of purchasing an item from a grab bag seems daunting – hat and gloves… OK, what color? What material? Water-resistant? Sport or fashion? It can make even the merriest feel downtrodden. For those of you who become stumped by the sheer volume of options, I offer a short list of holiday gift-giving ideas. Gift certificates. Some find them simply unimaginative. I, for one, rejoice. It forces someone to specifically put aside time to try something new, visit an old favorite, or indulge in a whim even if funds are running tight. There are endless choices of stores, salons, restaurants, and hotels you may choose from – or, keep it simple and pick up a Cape May Gift Certificate. Available in increments of $25, this thoughtful gift
provides the most options for your recipient, with many local retailers, accommodations, and organizations participating. Just visit the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, the Hill House Office at the Emlen Physick Estate, or purchase online at www.capemaymac.org. I am a huge proponent of handmade art (it might be my own penchant for creating handmade wares) so naturally I find that the best gifts are often the most creative ones. If you like supporting the hand-

made movement, check out The Jonathan Galleries at www.thejonathangalleries. com for stunning yet affordable prints including “The Reason for the Season” and “Winter Berries” (a favorite of mine, as it captures a tree on the Washington Street Mall). Looking for unique jewelry? Check out these beach pebble earrings, handcrafted by Keith Madden, set in sterling silver. Under $20 and an ideal gift to capture a piece of Cape May, you can order these earrings without leaving home! Just check out Keith’s shop at www.etsy.com/ FTRKAM. He also offers other great pieces made from beach pebbles and shells. I avoid Black Friday in favor of another shopping-inspired weekend: Hospitality Nights in Cape May. This year, Hospitality Weekend commences on Thursday, December 9, and features local merchants offering later hours for convenience, often with snacks and spirits to ease the pains of weary shoppers. Sunset Beach Gift Shops hosts three nights of food, live music, and hourly raff les while offering a wide variety of gift ideas. I hope to see you there!

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Is it ever okay to read someone else’s texts? – Just Wondering Dear Wondering The Answer Lady is intrigued by your question, primarily because she cannot determine whether you are the snooper or the – uh – snoop-ee. In a perfect world, the Answer Lady would say “absolutely not – everyone is entitled to privacy, yadayada-yada.” Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world, so the short answer is yes, depending upon the circumstances. The Answer Lady is NOT saying that we have carte blanche to peruse the phones of friends, casual acquaintances, and coworkers. If it’s a close family member, however, particularly a child or spouse, it is permissible only if you believe the person is in some sort of trouble or otherwise behaving
The Flying Fish Studio Open at 10am Thursday Thru Monday
inappropriately. If you suspect a teenager of drug abuse, or a spouse of gambling away the grocery money in Atlantic City, there will likely be evidence on their phone, and you are practically obliged to learn as much as you can in order to best deal with the situation. One can usually tell when someone is relying on their phone for nefarious deeds, as they rarely let it out of their sight, pounce on it the instant it rings, etc. We’re also assuming you are not walking around in a constant state of suspicion, in which
case the problem rests with you. So yes, while we are all entitled to privacy, as the Answer Lady’s friend Dr Phil says: People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. Dear Answer Lady I was standing in line while Christmas shopping at one of the big-box stores up the road when the schmuck in front of me started yakking away on his cell phone like he was the only person in the world. I wanted to hit him over the head with the big-screen TV I was buying for my wife – what could I have said? – Aggravated Elf Dear Elf Well, sir, consider this your punishment for patronizing big-box stores instead of the shops right here in Cape May. Had you been in line at a local shop, let’s say the Exit Zero store, you most likely would know the person in front of you, and could engage in pleasant conversation. The lesson here? Shop local! By the way, the Answer Lady is well aware that one cannot purchase a big-screen TV at the Exit Zero store, but is equally sure that your wife did not ask Santa for one, either.

Activity Of The Week
A
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Visit the Lighthouse
N OLD proverb – at least as old as the LL Bean catalogue – claims there is “no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.” A trip to the lighthouse in winter requires the right clothes – warm, wind-resistant, and waterproof. Even if you feel only slightly chilly on the ground and you are warmed by the 199 steps of your journey, the breeze that greets you when get to the top will set your teeth to chattering. The Cape May Lighthouse is a great place to visit on a December weekend. The 1859 structure – Cape May’s third lighthouse – is located in Cape May Point State Park and is maintained and operated by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. You won’t have the place to yourself in winter, but the crowds are gone and you can take your time as you climb. The interior was refurbished in 1998. Examine at your leisure the nooks in the brickwork, decorated with pictures and information about the lighthouse and its keepers. The nooks are also convenient if you need a break from the climb. Because it’s not
crowded, you’re free from the summertime rush to start back down – there’s no line of climbers waiting down below. At the top, the wind whips your face, making conversation impossible. The kids start out chattering and questioning, but they soon realize the futility and enjoy this wild, noisy peace. The family is there, together, wrapped in winter, and each of us is alone. The solitude is welcome for its own sake, and because it forces us to contemplate
the gray winter ocean, the challenges faced by shivering sailors, and the grim reality of winter for working people in the nineteenth century. This is insight into another side of Victorian life. Even if you never leave the ground, you’ll enjoy a trip to the lighthouse. The tiny museum shop has plenty of pictures of the view, and you can see the World War II bunker on the beach without tackling any steps. Also, because Cape May Point is a favorite birdwatching destination, you may pick up a new hobby while you visit. Even better, admission to the visitor’s orientation center and the ground floor is free – the fee to climb the tower is $7. The lighthouse is open from 12pm–3pm on Saturdays and Sundays in December, daily from December 26 to January 2. Get yourself the right clothes – including gloves – and head to the lighthouse. When you come back down to earth, claim a seat by the fire at the Pilot House, order hot chocolate, and rekindle the conversation lost to the wind. Next week: A Cozy Carriage Ride

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.
W
HEN it comes to men, Cape May is more like Cape Maybe. Maybe he’ll look for a job this winter, or maybe he’ll sit around playing with his Wii. Maybe he’ll mow the lawn, or maybe he’ll sleep until noon. Maybe he knows how to balance a checkbook, fold his laundry, and take a shower without being told… or maybe not. I’ve dated lots of maybe men who view adulthood as optional. I’ve put up with their baseball caps and baggy jeans, their perpetual hangovers, and their apartments full of dirty dishes and dirtier magazines. But there is one kind of maybe man I can’t stomach: the momma’s boy. This is the guy who, at age 32, thinks to himself: “Gee, maybe I should get my own place… or maybe I should continue watching ESPN on my mother’s couch.” Inevitably, he decides on the latter. The momma’s boy I dated in college, a guy named John, didn’t live with his mother, but he might as well have. When John bought a cat our senior year, his mom scolded him. “You know I don’t like pets,” she said. “How
could you not have consulted me first?” Feeling guilty, John cried. He sobbed, in fact – genuine, bona fide tears. I told him to go ahead and adopt the cat. “Name it Backbone,” I said, “because then you’ll actually own one.” Things only got worse from there. If John had so much as a hangnail, he’d call his mother. If she didn’t answer, he’d want me to comfort him just like a mother would. He wanted me to take care of him, but he
wanted me in hooker shoes and lip liner while I did it. It was exhausting. I thought the men I’d meet after college would be different. Last week, I gave a guy I’d been interested in a ride home. He’d had too much tequila at the Ugly Mug to drive himself. When we got to his house or, more accurately, to his mother’s house, he realized he’d left his keys with his buddies at the bar. “Can’t your mom let you in?” I asked. He looked at me as though I’d suggested busting through the door with a chainsaw. “I can’t wake her up at two in the morning,” he said, “obviously.” His concern would have been sweet, I suppose, if he’d also had an issue asking me, at two in the morning, to cart him all the way back to the Mug. Perhaps Freud was right; you can’t come between a man and his mother. I can’t really blame a guy for prioritizing his mom over me; her love is unconditional, and mine is definitely not. If a guy refuses to cut the cord, a girl’s got no choice but to cut him loose. There are no maybes about it - even Cape May men need to grow up eventually.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Tangled” and “127 Hours”
N
EVER have I reviewed an odder pair of films than this week’s. Where to begin – with the suspenseful tale of one man’s struggle against nature and time or a classic retelling of a somewhat hairy story? Let’s go with Tangled. Say what you want about the entertainment industry kingpin, but Disney is at the top of its game with this adaptation of the Rapunzel story. Disney writers have proven their acumen for not only retelling (or reimagining, as is the new buzz word for this type of adaptation) the original Grimm fairy tale, but upgrading the story for even more poignancy and charm. Rapunzel (played by actress/singer Mandy Moore), is the princess of a small, vibrant, peaceful kingdom. Because of a rare healing plant used to save her and her mother during childbirth, Rapunzel’s magical locks have healing and restorative powers that are known only by an old witch, Mother Gothel (played by Donna Murphy). The old witch finds youth in Rapunzel’s hair and steals the baby, keeping her locked up in
Mandy Moore is the voice of Rapunzel in Disney’s new “Tangled”
a nearby tower for eighteen years. With the help of a runaway bandit, Flynn Ryder (played by Zach Levi), Rapunzel goes on an adventure to rediscover her roots. The themes of being lost, finding your true calling, and discovering genuine healing play strong with wonderful storytelling. As always, the animation leads the way at a time when all animated work figures in the
forefront of a film’s selling power. In 127 Hours James Franco plays Aron Ralston, a real-life hiker and canyon explorer who gets trapped in the vast unknown with no means to call for help. No one knows where he was planning to spend the weekend. Franco, who has been fantastic in the Spiderman series as well as comedies such as Pineapple Express and Date Night, delivers an excellent performance as a man trapped by the elements with slim chances at survival. Although the film is very good, there is something missing that prevents it from being truly spectacular. That something might involve spending more time on developing Ralston’s character so that the audience can be truly engaged by the end. We sort of know from the beginning that there are few options for this adventure-seeker trapped by a rock (and perhaps his own carelessness). The parts of the movie about his life were possibly too subtle… and I can’t believe I’m saying that anything might be too subtle! Although worth seeing, 127 Hours might leave an impression that lasts a little under that timeframe.

SASSY is a fairly well–behaved puppy. She knows the commands down and sit and will do so automatically. Since she is young she’s going through her teething phase and can be a tad mouthy. She could play fetch all day long. Because of her age, she will need house training. We recommend a home with older children who can handle her. If Sassy sounds like a match for you, drop in and meet her today. Adoption fee is $95.
«
MAX is your typical young male lab; he’s rowdy, has lots of energy, and at times can be a little mouthy. He was surrendered to our shelter because he was just a little too rough for the child in his home. If given proper training and exercise we’re sure he’ll make a great family pet. All Max needs now is a second chance to prove that he’s worthy of being in a forever family. Adoption fee is $95.
«
TARA is one of our pets that was found on the streets and brought to our shelter by someone with a good heart. She is affectionate and social but she can be jumpy at times. She enjoys her toys, but she can be a bit protective of them so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. If you think you’re able to offer Tara what she needs please stop by today for some more information. Adoption fee is $95.

BUGGY is a sweet little black cat with the most beautiful face and biggest green eyes you’ve ever seen. Once she warms up to you she loves to be petted. Since she is a tad bit shy we recommend a home without dogs or children. She would make a great companion to another cat. If you’d like a second cat, consider Buggy. Adoption fee is $70.
«
NOEL arrived here before Christmas. She’s a friendly female tabby who loves to be held, but anyone adopting her should know that Noel has an inoperable hernia. It does not require special care, but does present a visible lump. We don’t expect problems in the future, but Noel is considered a “special needs” cat. Adoption fee is $8.
«
RUTH seems to be on the shy side, as she tends to hang in the back of her cage. However, the minute you open her cage door, she comes right up and begs for a bit of petting. If you’re looking for a mature, friendly female who knows how to make herself at home, please come see Ruth. Adoption fee is $35.

Bird Droppings
O
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
NE of my earliest memories is of my mother feeding the birds. She wasn’t a bird watcher. She didn’t have any idea what birds were benefitting from her generous inclinations. But in 1955 there was a whopping snowstorm that pretty nearly shut down North Jersey. My mother, driven by compassion and housebound boredom, opened up the second-f loor window of our carriage house apartment and threw slices of bread onto the snow. I remember a near riot of color and animation as the white landscape was transformed by hosts of hungry birds. It’s possible this event changed my life. It might be the encounter that made me conscious of birds; made me, over the course of my childhood and now adulthood, squander my money in the generous and self-serving effort to get as many birds as possible dependent upon my handouts. Generous and self-serving. Yes. Absolutely. Why should one preclude the other? After all, politics work best
when all sides get what they want. Why should feeding birds be any different? As for generous, yes. Feeding birds does help seed (and suet and fruit) eating birds get through the winter, particularly when weather conditions prevent birds from foraging effectively, and particularly late in the season (i.e. February and March) when natural food stocks have been depleted.
RENT THIS SPACE! $70 PER WEEK Contact Jason 408-7629 • jason@exitzero.us
On very cold mornings, you’ll find birds coming to your feeder at first light and swarming over your offerings like their lives depended upon them. Because they do. The birds are cold-stressed. Their energy stocks depleted. Having food at hand when they need it will boost their energy and prevent them from having to forage more widely and at greater risk. On mornings after a heavy snow fall, ground-feeding birds are backed into nooks and crannies, searching for little microhabitats (beneath bushes, in the lee sides of logs), where snow levels have not put the food they need out of the reach of their bills. Last winter, ground-feeding birds died in droves. Here’s the kicker. The reason I feed birds in winter is not to save lives. It’s a warm, fuzzy feeling, but it’s not my primary motive. The reason I feed birds is because I just plain love watching birds, and feeding birds in my back yard brings birds close where I can enjoy them.

When you add puppets by multiple Emmy award-winner Michael Schupbach in a newly conceived production by guest director Scott Hitz, you get a theatrical triumph.
Audiences are raving about Scott Hitz’ re-imagining of “The Little Prince,” a heartwarming story celebrating creativity. In addition to weekly evening performances, “The Little Prince” runs weekend matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm.
COMING UP AT CAPE MAY STAGE Pay What You Can Night For “The Little Prince”
Sunday, Dec. 12 8pm, Pick The Price
PNC Arts Alive is sponsoring a Pay What You Can Night on Sunday, December 12 at 8pm so that everyone can experience the magic of this show. Just come to the box office at the corner of Lafayette and Bank Streets and pay whatever you can afford. The demand for tickets is so great that we have added five shows to the schedule for the last two weeks: performances on December 21, 22, 28 and 29 have been added at 8pm as well as a matinees on December 21 at 3:30pm and December 30 at 3pm. “One sees clearly only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes.” These words uttered by the fox to the little prince might serve as a theme for the whole of the 2010 season. Cape May Stage has endeavored to bring theatrical fare that touches the heart from the very first play – Class – through comedies like I Hate Hamlet and musicals like Romance/Romance to the more challenging works like Happy Days and Topdog/Underdog. Even The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) brings a love for theatre and great language so that it can lampoon it. The Little Prince is the grand finale of an extraordinary season.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 Just like that morning when my mother threw bread onto the snow, the sight of so much life in the dead of winter is captivating. A stick in the eye of Old Man Winter. Proof positive that life is tougher than anything adversity can throw at it. Long live life! With a little help from your friends. Now about that bread. Sorry Mom. The bread was a no-no. Seed-eating birds don’t need their seed husked, milled, yeast-enhanced, baked and sliced. All they need is seed. Some birds like suet, fat. Some birds like berries (like raisins) and fruit (like apples). You want as much color and animation as possible (from the birds, that is), so put out as many different food items as possible. But please, only those on Seymore’s BYBF (back yard bird feeding) list. Now, the Cape May Bird Observatory up in Goshen has just the stuff birds want. And the bird seed they are selling is premium stuff, including a brand of black oil sunf lower seed that is Jersey fresh. To birds, black oil sunf lower seed is as addictive as french fries. But once again, discretion. Seed-eating birds don’t want french fries either. Seymore’s BYBF list includes black oil sunf lower seed, Nyjer (thistle) seed, mixed seed (especially those
containing sunf lower seed and kernels), white proso millet, peanuts, suet cakes, and woodpecker mix. The bird feeding experts at the Cape May Bird Observatory will be glad to help with seed selection. If you want to pick up some bird seed, CMBO’s Center for Research & Education is located at 600 Route 47 North in the town of Goshen. The center is open 9:30am–4:30pm every Tuesday through Saturday. The Nature Center of Cape May is located at 1600 Delaware Avenue on the harbor in Cape May. Call (609) 898-8848 for hours. For feeders or field guides to help you identify all those birds at your feeders, visit CMBO’s Northwood Center, at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point. The center is open 9:30am– 4:3opm except Tuesdays. Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer). And if you can’t make it in person, you can always visit our website www.BirdCapeMay. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. He weaves information and insight into a net that captures readers. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
