The Police Blotter
OHIO: Residents reported a young boy catching fish with a bow and arrow with a suction cup attached. He would catch the fish and beat them to death with a rock. Officers told the young fisherman that only catch-and-release fishing was allowed. The boy left the area.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past Just ‘cause you got the monkey off your back doesn’t mean the circus has left town. George Carlin Marriage is a good deal like a circus: there is not as much in it as is represented in the advertising. Edgar Watson Howe CIRCUS, n. A place where horses, ponies and elephants are permitted to see men, women and children acting the fool. Ambrose Bierce Every country gets the circus it deserves. Spain gets bullfights. Italy gets the Catholic Church. America gets Hollywood. Erica Jong The attraction of the virtuoso for the public is very like that of the circus for the crowd. There is always the hope that something dangerous will happen. Claude Debussy
THERE’S been some confusion about the fate of the first Cape May blimp. Contrary to local legend, the airship was not lost in a fire. It was delivered as planned in February of 1919. A smaller blimp with the same call sign of SSZ-23 was lost to a fire, but that happened overseas in 1918. The Cape May airship was simply reassigned to another location. Two years after it was moved, the blimp was stricken from the Navy roster after it was deemed too large for practical use. Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
Funambulist Not a fumbler or a fun ambulance, a funambulist is a person who walks on a rope or wire, often from great heights. The word comes from the Latin funis for ‘rope’ and ambulare for ‘to walk.’ The most famous female funambulist was Bird Millman, a performer in the Ringling Brothers Circus.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know where you’ll find these booths, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
THE first American circus was founded in Philadelphia by Englishman John Bill Ricketts in 1793. George Washington became such a fan that he later allowed Jack – the white horse he rode in the Revolutionary War – to be displayed in the ring there.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Help! I’m being held prisoner in a Chinese bakery! J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with shrimp pad thai. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
H
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
OPEFULLY you don’t have anything major lined up for the next few days, because there’s plenty happening in Cool Cape May, starting tomorrow. First up is the Cape May Garden Club’s annual Flower Show at The Grand Hotel. This will run 12:30-5pm in the ballroom, and if previous shows are any indication, it promises to be quite the spectacular feast for the senses. If your spring fever isn’t quite in gear just yet, kick-start it with a visit to this event – admission, as always, is free. Next up, Friday evening, when West Cape May’s Best Start Montessori Preschool will hold its Spring Student Art Exhibit at Higher Grounds Coffee Shop at 479 West Perry Street from 6–8pm. The wee students there have been learning about famous artists and have been inspired to create their own works of art. With the help of local artist/teacher Janet Payne, they’ve created paintings, collages, sculptures and weavings. She says, “Each week we look at the work of a famous artist and I ask the students, ‘Tell me something about this artist.’ It is amazing what they observe. It really gets them looking, talking and thinking about art.” Ginnette Santiago, the director of Best Start Montessori Preschool observes, “The children talk about the artists and art class all through the week. They really look forward to it.” The kids have created artwork inspired by the works of Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Romare Bearden, George Segal and Hokusai, among others. Samples of the books used in class will be on display during the exhibit, as well as a memory
game created by Payne that the children play each week. So stop by, check out the artwork, and meet these young artistes (before they hit the big time, presumably). On Saturday, head over to the Strictly Jersey Boat Show at South Jersey Marina, where they will be incorporating a “Demo Dock” in the proceedings this year. Demonstrations will include activating a Viking Life Raft by Sea Safety, underwater hull inspections by Barnacles Divers, docking techniques and hands-on training by Boat Boy, among others. Our friend Mark Allen from SJ Marina tells us, “Two years ago, one writer described the Strictly Jersey Boat Show as the ‘First of the Boutique Boat Shows.’ The reasons are simple. This show is small by design, provides a VIP venue, and targets New Jersey’s boat buying public.” The show runs until 5/2, 10am-4pm. If you’re more a landlubber than a seafarer, catch the Spring Flower Festival (formerly known as the Tulip Festival), also on Saturday, with a rain date of Sunday. This free outdoor event is at Rotary Park and features accents and accessories for home and garden, along with local artisans and
crafters, and eco-friendly resources to promote a green Cape May. On Saturday night, head over to the annual GABLES Auction, which this year is being billed as a “Triple A” event, with live, silent and Chinese auctions. We’re told by those in the know that the items this year are exciting and quite different, with donations from all your favorite shops in town, artworks from noted painters, as well as pottery and antiques. Do your part to help this worthy group hit, and hopefully surpass, their goal of $100,000. Doors open at 6pm for a preview and the live auction begins at 7pm at the Inn of Cape May. IF YOU’RE looking for a quick bite after a busy day and before your evening shenanigans, may we suggest the new Beach House Restaurant, which occupies the former Henry’s On The Beach. A couple of EZ staffers stopped by for the soft opening last weekend, and word is the food and service are both excellent. SPEAKING of GABLES, it saddens us to hear that an attendee at the recent GABLES Comedy Night held at Cabanas was the victim of an unprovoked assault by a gay-bashing local citizen while leaving the event. Charges have been filed, and apparently the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office is pursuing this as a ‘bias intimidation’ or hate crime, and fittingly so. This town is a little too small, not to mention too civilized, to tolerate such disgusting behavior. THE VFW All-Music Trivia Night we mentioned last week has been rescheduled from May 26 to June 9 – adjust your calendars accordingly!

HINGS aren’t always as they seem. That should be obvious, but in my optimism I tend to forget it, and I wind up surprised. Stacy and I went to dinner at Aleathea’s, which is not as it seems. The classic Victorian inn overlooking the ocean seems old. Oriental rugs, antiques on the walls, wrought-iron chairs; even the other diners were mostly graying. But what the chef is cooking will surprise you. Despite Aleathea’s old-school feel, there’s a modern flavor to what’s coming out of the kitchen. I’ve never eaten a soup like the spicy halibut and lump crab chowder, which was delicious, and Stacy began with a generous goat cheese salad. For entrees, I enjoyed the chicken marsala over linguini, which was good, but which could have used more chicken and less noodles. Stacy, a fish connoisseur, tried the salmon, served with quinoa cooked in a red wine reduction with peppers and scallions. “It’s really good,” she said. “I probably shouldn’t eat the whole thing.” For today’s tastes with yesterday’s attitude, it seems like Aleathea’s is the spot.
Get a table on the porch, with a view of the waves. In the days leading up to our date, Stacy and I shared a lengthy email tennis match. I made her smile, she made me laugh, it was a lot of fun. That continued once we actually met. She was a delightful dinner companion, and at the end of the evening, she agreed to my suggestion that we go out again. She asked me to email her. The next day she sent a thoughtful thank-you email. It seemed like
there was some chemistry. That’s why her next email surprised me. I’m sure you know the clichés: “I’m super busy,” “going through a lot of transitional life stuff,” “we don’t have a lot in common,” “let’s just be friends.” Huh? Where did this reversal come from? Was everything leading up to this not what it seemed? Or did she fall back on trite phrases because she can’t tell me the truth? In the end, I’m just confused. Stacy’s actions one day don’t jibe with her words the next. Guys appreciate when you rip the Band-aid off and get it over with instead of pussyfooting around the truth. Are you what you seem? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. Let’s be up front with each other over good food. Note to Stella Dixon: I may not agree with your adjectives, but nobody has better-sounding adverbs than you! Looking forward to our dinner.

EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about the circus. This week’s winner is Robert Travis, 63, an insurance broker from Staten Island, New York. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: When was the last time you were at the circus? Last year. What is your favorite type of circus act? Trapeze. Have you ever seen a bearded lady outside the circus? No. Robert wins a $50 gift certificate to The Bird House of Cape May for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIELLE O’NEAL

The Inside Scoop On City Hall
T
A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Jon Roth
HE EXIT Zero team was back attending a city council meeting on a balmy April evening. Unlike the previous meeting, this occasion was considerably truncated (a nod to the approaching Easter weekend, perhaps?). In the following minutes you’ll hear about tax decreases, tree dedications, and of course, a handy analysis of each key player’s ensemble (because when you reach ordinance 342.343.534, nothing saves you from boredom like a daffodil-colored shirt). Meeting of Cape May City Council, Wednesday, April 20... 7:00pm: Roll Call – Mayor Edward Mahaney, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, Councilmember Terri Swain, Councilmember Bill Murray, Councilmember Deanna Fiocca, as well as City Manager Bruce MacLeod, City Attorney Tony Monzo, City Clerk Diane Weldon and City Auditor Leon Costello. 7:02pm: The team enters the auditorium sits down just as we are required to
stand and deliver the Pledge of Allegiance. Since we’re pledging ‘to the flag,’ we look at the actual cloth flag hanging on the stage. Others prefer to pledge allegiance to a poster of the flag. To each his own. 7:03pm: Mayor Mahaney mentions that the funeral service for former mayor Frank Gauvry (who served between 1964 and 1972), which Mayor Mahaney, Councilmember Fiocca, Attorney Monzo and Mr MacLeod attended, was dignified and respectful. Following the service, Gauvry’s casket was brought out of Star of the Sea onto the Washington Street Mall, one of the projects Gauvry himself spearheaded as part of the city’s Urban Renewal program. Mahaney reported that the many mall patrons “stood with respect alongside the congregants.” Mahaney then thanked members of police force, coast guard and fire department for their involvement. 7:06pm: John Thomas of the Cape May school district arrives to give a report on the budget and needs of Cape May schools. He mentions that in reaction to the “governor’s
crusade” to limit school funding, the school budget dropped considerably and staff and enrollment levels have continued as usual. In an effort to best utilize the resources available, the school recently participated in an energy audit with Mayor Mahaney. 7:08pm: Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman inquires whether any headway has been made towards combining the Cape May and West Cape May districts. Mr Thomas replies that though board presidents have discussed such a union, West Cape May Elementary “is a small community school, and wants to stay that way.” 7:09pm: City Auditor Leon Costello gives the council an overview of the budget. While initially there was a proposed tax increase of two and then one cent, the final increase will only come in at 6/10th of a cent, which means you can put those other 3/10ths to skyrocketing oil prices. The changes made to the budget will be advertised (though not in this publication –

From Page 39 you just read our version of the advertisement) before the final budget is assessed and hopefully approved on May 3 at 1pm. 7:12pm: Jay Schatz, clad in light-wash jeans, a sheathed knife, a yellow oxford, and a dashing blue cardigan (with epaulets, no less) approaches the podium. Wichterman inquires of Schatz, “Are you armed tonight?” To which Schatz replies, “Yes, but the knife is sheathed in cement.” Seems impractical to us, but safety first, folks. Mr Schatz begins to inquire about the particulars of the budget changes, but is then informed that this isn’t the appropriate time, the floor will be open for budget discussions in a few minutes. 7:14pm: A brief discussion of resolutions takes a few (two) minutes. Mr Schatz then returns to the podium for the open public hearing. Mr Wichterman (wearing a navy blazer with the requisite American flag pin, a dark blue shirt and silk printed tie) requests that he return “Without [his] pocket knife, if [he] would.” Schatz disregards this (joking?) request, though we imagine he may be miffed at having his considerable weapon referred to as a “pocket knife.” Schatz asks after the particulars of the budget adjustments. Funds allocated to the Length of Service Award Program have been decreased, and the amount of money distributed for legal costs is reduced. Costs for the beach tag program have increased. City Auditor Costello remarks that overall nine expenses have been reduced, one increased. Mr Schatz thanks the council and Mr Costello for clarifying and returns to his seat 7:20pm: City Clerk Diane Weldon, who wears a fetching paisley print suit, reads a proclamation penned by Mayor Mahaney in honor of Arbor Day. Cape May is designated a “Tree
City, USA” by the Shadetree Commision, and the proclamation encourages locals to “plant trees to gladden the hearts of future generations.” Mayor Mahaney requests that Weldon send copies of the document to the Shadetree Commission and the elementary school.
7:23pm: Deputy Mayor Wichterman describes recent city expenses, including a mall scrubber, adjustments to the utility bill (which is still reeling from the recent water leak), beach protection for 28 of Cape May’s shore spots, and the purchase of a new bucket truck for the city. “I’ll tell ya’,” Wichterman opines, “we’ve got more trucks than Kerbeck,” but this particular vehicle is a necessity as the summer approaches. 7:26pm: Diane Weldon delivers the minutes. Meanwhile, we can’t help but noticing that the city council is perched on some very fine chairs. They’re upholsted in red leather with handsome tacking. And they swivel, too!
7:28pm: Clerk Weldon then moves on to the school district elections taking place next Wednesday, and lists the polling places, which seem to cover

From Page 40 every church in town, plus the Corinthian Yacht Club, presumably for those of us who might be struck by lightning upon entering a church. 7:30pm: Deputy Mayor Wichterman references an article in The Press of Atlantic City describing the Lower Township school budget. A school official is quoted saying “the formula for what we pay is dictated by trend.” Wichterman says, “What you read in the papers is not correct.” In brief, 6% of students at LCMR come from Cape May. One member of the school board represents Cape May, five members represent Lower Township, and one member represents West Cape May. School taxes are evenly distributed between all three areas, meaning Cape May residents shoulder 33% of school expenses. Wichterman remarks “This is not what we voted for in 1956, but it’s what we’re stuck with.” 7:35pm: Mention of the Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Fashion Stroll (you can enjoy photos of these events on pages 3-15 of this periodical – Easter bonnets galore). 7:37pm: Mayor Mahaney congratulates City Attorney Tony Monzo and his
wife on their participation in the CROP Hunger Walk. $15,000 dollars were raised and 109 walkers were in attendance. 7:38pm: Wichterman reminds Mayor Mahaney: “You would have gotten lost on that walk if I didn’t tell you where to go.” Mahaney retorts, “Yeah, you told me to step around that pothole that I told you to fix.” This elicits chuckles from a chuckle-hungry audience. 7:39pm: Another bucket truck mention. 7:40pm: Bernie Haas approaches the podium, dressed in light khakis, a navy blazer and white Oxford shirt. First, he asks after the National Historic Landmark banners that used to grace our streets. Where have they gone? Wichterman answers “We have the banners, just not the bucket truck!” Excellent timing on Mr Haas’ part.
Mr Haas then pursues an aggressive line of questioning, wondering why the city council has been more or less mum on the Beach Theatre issue. Haas, who is the treasurer of the Beach Theatre Foundation, charges the council with explaining why they haven’t attended any of the Zoning Board of Adjustment Meetings. Mahaney responds that it would be “inappropriate” for the council to attend these meetings, citing conflicts of interest, and explains: “We are staying completely out of it, as we should.” City Attorney Monzo interjects “There’s also a lawsuit against the city, and you have to respect that.” 7:46pm: Jay Schatz compliments the workers who recently widened Elmira Street. He is “glad the trees in that area were maintained, the work was thoughtfully done.” Mayor Mahaney asks that Schatz pen a note of thanks to the contractor responsible. Elmira will not be a twoway street until the county installs and programs a traffic light at the intersection. 7:50pm: Meeting adjourned. We visit the Brown Room, unwind on the porch and imagine what we’d do with our own bucket truck. We’re thinking streamers. Lots of streamers.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
DID used to so love when the circus came to town. Every summer, when the gaily painted train used to pull into Cape May station, I joined the crowds who came to welcome the fantastical creatures and people on it. We cheered the Strongman as he carried an elephant off under each arm. We shrieked with delight as the Karamazov Brothers leapt from their trapeze car and alighted atop Congress Hall. We screamed in fear and fascination as the Snake Lady slithered from her berth. And we shouted questions at Guy The Surly Talking Gorilla as he scowled out of his carriage from over the top of a copy of The Times of London. “What’s the capital of France, Guy?” a lady yelled. “Kiss my hairy derriere and I’ll tell you,” opined the ape. “Guy, what’s the square root of pi?” a cheeky scamp squealed. “Come here and I’ll pull your head off, you little b*****d,” said Guy, putting rather a dampener on the crowd’s spirits, not to mention the terrified boy’s pants.
The circus used to set up along the beach, and once fully assembled, it was so lavish, so spectacular and so huge that it would take a chap a full day and night to walk its length if he was to partake in every tent’s delights. People f locked from scores of miles around just to be part of the thrill, and if, in those pre-safety-obsessed days, a few dozen careless attendees happened to not survive the occasion, then we thought it was nature’s way of weeding out the weak. I mean, who in their right mind actually vol-
unteers to assist the blind, palsied knifethrower? Or to dress as a chicken and cycle through the tiger cage? And who would dare go into the tent of Dickie Deandra the notorious psychic? That chap’s specialty was to pick one random punter a night and forecast their doom, usually in the next few minutes, from blunt force trauma. Anyways, everything comes to an end, and one hot summer, due to careless scheduling, the Performing Mice Troupe was accidentally placed next to the Juggling Elephants, and of course when the twain met there was a stampede that tragically careered through the Fire-Eaters’ fuel storage area and then through the tiger cages that were unlocked for feeding time. Suffice it to say come dawn there no tents left standing and some 300 fewer citizens of Cape May and environs. The animals were scattered far and wide, and to this day the unwary visitor to Wildwood runs the risk of being attacked by wild beasts. To be fair, that was always the way, and the circus creatures, though savage, had better manners than the locals.

Casino Royale At Congress Hall Wildwood Catholic fundraiser provides chips for a cause
S
OMETIMES you’re just itching to gamble, but Atlantic City seems just out of reach. If you’re eager to roll the dice a bit closer to home, Wildwood Catholic High School has just the event for you. On Friday, May 6 at 6pm, the school will offer a “Casino Royale” fundraiser. Proceeds benefit Wildwood Catholic, which was almost shuttered last year due to lack of funding. Since then, alumni, parents and students have made a concerted effort to ensure the future of their school. This fundraiser is their latest bright idea. Elaine Schiano of the Wildwood Catholic PTA says there will be around 13 gaming tables sponsored by local business and offering games like blackjack, Texas hold’em poker, craps and roulette. The games will be conducted by Tumbling Dice’s professional croupiers, most of whom have worked in Atlantic City casinos. When not betting, guests will enjoy butlered hors d’oeuvres, a light buffet and dessert. This fare, plus $25 worth of chips, is included in the $50 admission price.
After almost closing last year, Wildwood Catholic has rebounded with a variety of fundraising initiatives. While guests will be gambling at Casino Royale night, they won’t take home money. Schiano explains that the fundraiser is “kind of like an arcade for adults. They get tickets, not cash, which can be put towards a 50/50 raff le or an auction of various prizes.” Many of the prizes in this auc-

tion are donated by local businesses, and include two VIP tickets to “Late Night with David Letterman,” a Cole Hamels autographed print and several island getaways. Schiano has been thrilled with the community response to the event. “There are so many businesses participating,” says Schiano. “The Ravioli House is donating all the desserts, and Congress Hall donated their Grand Ballroom. Businesses from Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor and Cape May Court House are all taking part.” It’s easy to see why the community is so eager to get involved: Wildwood Catholic High School is the only Catholic high school in Cape May County. After last year’s near-closure, the community is rallying behind the school. Whether you need to polish up your blackjack game or are looking for the excitement of an auction, don’t miss this night of cards and craps. And while you’re having all that fun, you’ll be supporting a great cause – one sure thing on a night full of gambles. For tickets, call the school at 609-522-7257.

Customer Service
I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
F YOU get pulled over for driving 75 miles per hour on Beach Avenue, you would be remiss not to mention that the Chief of Police is your sister. If you’re trying to impress a girl at the bar, by all means, let her know how sincerely Mick Jagger once complimented your karaoke skills. And if you’re vying for a job as, say, an astronaut, don’t forget to list Buzz Aldrin as a reference. These are instances where name dropping is totally acceptable, even smart. There are other times when name dropping is just plain silly. Dining out is one of these times. Last weekend, I waited on a woman who did not enjoy her experience. Like many unhappy guests, she was keen to let me know just how friendly she is with the big boss. Frankly, I would have been more impressed had she told me how chummy she is with everyone’s other favorite boss, Bruce Springsteen. This still would not have changed the fact that her service was too slow, her food too cold, and her disposition too sour, but at least I wouldn’t have questioned the woman’s credibility.
The customers who feel compelled to vocalize how often they rub elbows with the guy signing my checks are never the ones I see the big boss actually rubbing elbows with. There’s an inverse relationship, I’m convinced, between the number of times a patron drops the name of a restaurant’s owner and the amount of Christmas cards exchanged between he and said owner. And the same goes for the chef. I can’t count how many times a party has requested that I alert the chef because “Mr Smith has arrived,” or “Ms Jones is here.” Nine times out of ten, when I relay this very important message to the chef, he’ll stare at me blankly, having not the foggiest idea
who the heck I’m talking about. This will prompt me to say something along the lines of: “You know, the guy with the big lips,” or “You know, the woman who’s always trying to seduce you.” I find myself saying the latter quite a bit, as women f lock to this particular chef like tweens to a Justin Bieber concert. Such a description may or may not spark a hint of recognition. Sometimes, I have better luck if I keep it food-related: “You know, the guy who’s always demanding ketchup.” At this point, the chef has run out of time to spend on this game of Guess Who. He shrugs and tells me to bring these selflabeled VIP’s glasses of cheap, complimentary Champagne. Personally, I’d rather save the Champagne for Mr Springsteen, just in case The Boss ever does come in for dinner. The point is, each time a patron tells me that he or she knows the restaurant’s chef/ owner/manager, I’m tempted to say, “Hey, me too!” I do know the chef pretty well, after all, and I can tell you for sure, ladies, he kisses everyone on the cheek like that.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend and I split up six months ago after a long relationship. The breakup was difficult but amicable, and we agreed to remain friends. I’ve called him a couple of times to get together, like with mutual friends for happy hour at C-View, but he always shoots me down. He seems happy to see me when we run into each other in town, but never wants to make plans. Why isn’t he holding up the “being friends” part of the bargain? – His Ex Dear Ex Because he doesn’t want to be friends, dear. Just because he has no problem being civil to you when he runs into you doesn’t mean he wants you on his speed dial when he’s making plans for Wing Night. There could be any number of reasons why, and they run the gamut from ‘he isn’t over you
Wise answers to perplexing questions
yet and it’s too painful for him to intentionally hang out with you,’ to ‘breaking up with you is the best thing that ever happened to him and you are the worst wing man ever when it comes to scoping out new chicks.’ This may resolve itself over time, as the relationship fades into the distance, or not, particularly since you still apparently travel in the same social circles. So please, dear, stop torturing the poor guy, don’t call him when you want to go out, and see what happens down the road. Be grateful, by the way,
that you’ve had a civilized parting of ways and that your first inclination when you see him out and about isn’t to bash him over the head with a beer bottle. Dear Answer Lady What is the proper etiquette for asking out a friend’s ex? They broke up a few months ago – she’s kind of nutty and it was a bad breakup, but I’ve always thought she was cute and I figure, why not? Should I run it past him first, or just do it and let the chips fall where they may? – Wondering Dear Wondering The Answer Lady knows that gentlemen do not discuss such things among themselves the way that ladies do, but certainly you can bring yourself to say, “Dude, I’m thinking about asking Crazy Sheila out – are you cool with that?,” or words to that effect, in whatever vernacular you kids are using this week. This seems especially appropriate advice given that it was a “bad” breakup. You don’t want to stroll into Oyster Bay for dinner with Crazy Sheila on your arm, only to have your friend pitch a hissy fit from his perch at that copper-top bar.

LCMR Athlete Of The Week: Stephanie Harron
«
SENIOR softball pitcher and team captain Stephanie Harron believes in the quality of her team as a whole. She helped lead them to a history-making win against Hammonton last week. The 3-2 victory was a first in LCMR school history. Harron led the charge on the mound, but she refuses to take all of the credit for the win. According to Harron, each and every one of her teammates contributed to one of the most memorable moments in LCMR softball history. Since her freshman year, Harron has started varsity for the Tigers’ softball squad. She has a 2-2 record on the mound with 25 strikeouts so far this season. The 18-year-old daughter of Jack and Tami Harron is from Villas and plans to attend Virginia Wesleyan in Norfolk, VA in the fall. The youngest of three, Harron has been playing softball for ten years now. Stephanie believes that all of her team’s success has been due and will continue be made possible thanks to their tremendous teamwork and chemistry. “I love the teamwork, and I love all of the girls on the team,” said Harron. Activity Of The Week
S
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: the Spring Festival
PRING is a loaded word, and as you look around Cape May this week, you’ll find examples of all of its definitions. The Spring Festival, hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) from April 29 to May 8, will spring some special events on you. There is something for everyone: architecture and antiques, Sousa and spiritualism, tea dances and trolley tours. Spring into action! “Spring” as a noun meaning the “season following winter” has been in use for almost 500 years, and evolved, as you might expect, from the verb meaning “to leap, burst forth” as plants – and people – do after winter. It’s also a slang term for releasing someone from prison and a mechanical device for storing energy – both apply after this winter. Kick off your weekend with the new exhibit at MAC’s Carriage House Gallery, “Remembering South Cape May.” This lost town was badly flooded in a nor’easter in the 1930s and washed away in a hurricane in 1944, leaving behind the Cove and the bird sanctuary at the Meadows. Joseph
Bucher and Robert Kenselaar, co-authors of Remembering South Cape May: The Jersey Shore Town That Vanished Into the Sea, will be on hand to sign books at the exhibit’s opening on Friday, April 29 at 7pm. If you want a spring in your step, learn some Victorian dances with a vintage dance workshop, and then show off your new skills at the Vintage Ball on Saturday night, April 30, or the Tea Dance on Sunday afternoon, May 1. MAC advises that “vintage dress is

admired but not required.” Do you credit hot chocolate with getting you through the winter? Consider the Chocolate Championship Tour and Tasting on Saturday, April 30. Tour some of Cape May’s inns and restaurants, sample their chocolate desserts and vote for your favorite. This event is sort of like Halloween for grown-ups – you go from house to house and they give you gourmet treats. The tour is $25 for adults and $15 for children, and unless you are hiding from your personal trainer, no masks are required. If wine was your winter salvation, consider the Winery Cellar Tour and Tasting instead. There’s a lecture on Victorian architecture on May 2, and MAC is sponsoring tours of some of Cape May’s private homes, from Victorian to modern, on April 30 and May 7. Other lecture topics include etiquette, temperance, Sousa, and women. Sample what Cape May’s Spring Festival has to offer. Take the offspring on a boat tour “Around Cape Island.” Spring for dinner. Pick up This Week In Cape May for details. Next week: Garage Sale Shopping

ROXY is a pure-bred Old English Bulldog. She’s a very sweet dog, but she gets a little anxious sometimes. If you spend a little time with her, she’ll warm up and will become your best friend. She also loves to swim! She wouldn’t be the best fit for small kids, but bigger kids are fine with her. She’s also not good with cats, but she loves other dogs. Roxy still isn’t the best on a leash, so she’ll need a little training with this.
«
ZOLA is a somewhat shy gal who is uneasy when she first meets new people. She has a lot of strength and will need a firm hand when guiding her. She does know some basic commands but will still need more training. She can become excited when playing and get jumpy, so we recommend a home with children over the age of 14. If you have experience with more powerful dogs, stop in and meet her. Adoption fee is $95.
«
CLIFFORD is patiently waiting for a home. He is a pure-bred, long-haired Dachshund. He’s a very sweet boy, but needs to get to know you before he becomes affectionate. Things have been very stressful for him lately, and he needs a quiet environment. He knows a few basic commands and is housebroken. If you think you have enough love in you for a boy that needs it, stop by the shelter and give him a visit!

FERRIS is an independent fellow, but wants to learn to be a good companion cat. Ferris likes to be petted, but since he lived the first part of his life outside, he has to learn a few manners. For example, he likes to tap your hand, but hasn’t learned to keep his claws in yet! Want to help Ferris become a charmer? Adoption fee is $35.

NUMMY arrived here with her brother Pike. Pike has since been adopted, leaving Nummy all alone and wondering why she hasn’t been adopted yet. Nummy is a sweet, playful cat who is curious about her surroundings. If you’re looking to brighten up your life, not to mention that of a lonely kitty, meet Nummy today! Adoption fee $70.

LAZARUS came in as a very thin stray. We did not think he would make it. We later learned he is allergic to cat food containing any ingredients such as chicken or duck. He MUST remain on a venison and pea diet as this works perfectly for him. He is a very friendly and playful guy who would make a great family pet. Adoption fee is $8.

INE restaurants often give diners an “amuse bouche,” a little treat before the meal. Well, Cape May Stage is offering a pre-season treat with a staged reading of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Was Enuf by Ntozake Shange and produced by Chase Jackson. Now may be your last chance to get tickets for an evening performance on April 30 at 8pm and a 3pm matinee on May 1. Chase Jackson approached Artistic Director Roy Steinberg many months ago with the proposal of doing a project before the season really got going. “I love the idea of collaboration and was particularly pleased that Chase chose such an important piece of theatrical literature. Cape May Stage is committed to bringing eclectic and powerful texts to the attention of our community. We have done readings by Obie Award-winning writers and mounted full-scale productions of writers who have won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award. I’m so thankful that Chase partnered with us. We are already planning future collaborations,” said Steinberg. In two weeks, the theatre’s 23rd season will open with Say Goodnight, Gracie written by New Jersey’s own Rupert Holmes. Joel Rooks reprises the tour-de-force performance that was completely sold out in 2009. There is a half-price preview on May 11 and the official opening is Thursday, May 12 with an after party at Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille at the Montreal Inn! Our opening nights are always the best

Bird Droppings
S
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
O THE other day this ex-US Marine stopped by the Cape May Bird Observatory. I knew he was a Marine because he had one of those square-jawed profiles you see on recruitment posters. I knew he was a Marine because he was sporting a crew cut so short he passed for bald. I knew he was a Marine because he told me so. Anyway, this ex-Marine stopped by the Bird Observatory to shop for a new suet feeder and to chat about the birds coming to his feeders and to ask... What? Yes, he was a bird watcher. You see he.... Huh? No. I don’t think it’s the least bit off that a retired Marine who served in Viet Nam should be interested in birds. What? Do you think birding is something only retired Army and Air Force personnel do? Yep. Met a few of them in my time, too. Now, this guy was pretty particular about his suet feeders. He wanted one that fed from the top and wasn’t hinged. It seems the raccoons that infest his place have figured out the latch system. And he
was also a bit daunted by the brand new spotting scope he’d purchased. He was apologetic about not buying from us and, since he’d purchased it online, wasn’t sure whether he’d made the right choice. Now, in any other line of work, a person who walks into a store and announces: “I bought this equipment from somebody

else, now can you tell me how to use it?” is probably not going to get a warm reception. One of the perks that comes with purchasing binoculars and spotting scopes from a place like the CMBO is the assurance that, at the very least, the equipment is designed with birding in mind. The other thing that comes with the purchase package is hands-on help getting fitted and familiar with your new purchase. You buy online, you get uncertainty and a “Good luck, Charlie” for your effort. Yet and still. This was a fellow birder. He’d made his purchase before realizing that the CMBO not only sold spotting scopes but had the best array of makes and models around. He would have bought it from CMBO but... he didn’t know. So of course we helped him. Assured him that the scope was perfectly fine. Suggested that the tripod he bought was okay too, although (if truth be known) we would have told him to buy a lighter one. Even ex-Marines shouldn’t have to

Bird Droppings ? From Page 89 carry more weight than they have to and the tripod he’d bought was about the heaviest instrument in the arsenal. All in all, he’d done pretty well going at it without a good deal of help. Then it turns out, he’s going to the Galapagos Islands for a retirement present to himself. He wanted to know what books he needed. He wanted to know whether he should bring his spotting scope. Easy questions. There are about half a dozen books on the natural history to the Galapagos Islands (and, of course the CMBO has them). He bought the one that had the best bird illustrations. As for the scope, the folks at the CMBO assured him that there was no need to bring the scope. Heck. It’s the Galapagos. The animals are fabulously tame. You can just walk right up to them. Why carry a scope? Of course, he became a member. And grabbed a schedule of events. And vowed to go on a field trip every day for as long as he stayed in Cape May. You might have seen him around. Rugged-looking guy with a Marine crew cut and a spotting scope. Then again, you might not have.
the look out for a square-jawed, buzz-cut birder who happens to be an ex-Marine! The center is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. CMBO offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year; every day in spring and fall – sometimes twice a day! And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit www.BirdCapeMay.org, where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
Our ex-Marine friend will soon be enjoying birds like this Blue-footed Booby on the Galapagos. Birders are pretty common hereabouts. If you’re a retired ex-anything, or if you are still gainfully employed (or not, the walks are only $10/person), head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily, in Cape May Point – THE information spot for anything to do with nature, and pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist, and keep on

We desperately need homes for scores of special apes rescued from circuses. These are the monkeys who ride bicycles, smoke, dress in suits, pick locks and handle firearms. Many gamble and have drinking problems, so they need kind but firm families to be rehabilitated. A small allowance is provided for alcohol, tobacco and playing cards. Call (609) 770-8479 and ask to speak to Head Of Special Monkey Adoptions.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Water For Elephants”
T
ALK about kismet! You know, kismet? Fate? Destiny? Jon emails me to tell me the circus edition of Exit Zero is coming to town (so to speak), and it just so happens that Water for Elephants is opening in theaters. Okay, so Jon had to sort of “assign” me to go to see this Reese Witherspoon film – and it’s not like I dislike her, it’s just that very few of her films have ever appealed to me. The new film is based on the best-selling book, a love story set in the 1930s on the site of a traveling circus. Robert Pattinson (best known for playing Edward in the Twilight series) plays Jacob, a young vet student whose aspirations are cut short by the tragic death of his parents and the loss of the family homestead and business during the Great Depression. By fate (kismet?) he finds himself hitching a train that turns out to be a traveling circus. It is there that he meets the ring leader, a man named August (Christoph Waltz) and his wife, Marlena (Witherspoon). The circus has lost its starring act when Marlena's show horse needs to be put down after Jacob (who has become the vet for the
Pattinson and Witherspoon play star-crossed carneys in "Water For Elephants." circus) diagnoses it with a terminal and painful condition. Anger begins smoulders between the husband and Jacob as sparks fly between Marlena and Jacob. Okay, as I write I can see why critics could call this film a little sappy (or soapy), but that

wasn’t my impression in the theater. Although Witherspoon and Pattinson play their roles well enough, it’s Waltz who stands out in this film. He plays the antagonist with great depth. Maybe there’s an(other) Oscar in his future, and while it may not be for this film, he demonstrates that he still has the right stuff. From the train cars to the big top itself, the sets are meticulously designed. The supporting cast is great, and the dialogue and story are well crafted. But realize that that this is a romantic drama, similar to another film that I really liked, this year’s The Lincoln Lawyer (which is after all a court drama). Sure, this film may have ripped a page from The Notebook (2004). But ultimately this film puts up a bigger tent than your typical romance (I struggled for five minutes to come up with that pun — give me a break). So after the circus leaves Cape May, check out this movie. For a free weekend pass to the Cape May Film Festival, be the first to email capemayfilm@ hotmail.com with the name of the film for which Christoph Waltz won his Oscar.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
I
’VE HAD very few relationships. Sure, I’ve been on a lot of dates, probably more than I should admit. But when it comes to the serious, exclusive, wearhis-T-shirt-to-bed kind of relationship, I’ve only been in two. And each, suffice it to say, stunk. The first one was especially bad. Lifetime movie kind of bad. You’vebeen-convicted-of-what?! kind of bad. Now, looking back, I breathe a sigh of relief that this relationship ended when it did. But at the time, I was devastated. If love is a battlefield, I was a wounded soldier. For a long time after the break-up, I was constantly on the verge of tears. Every man I saw on the street reminded me of my ex – he was tall like my ex, he had hair like my ex, or, you know, ears like my ex. Every song I heard became the soundtrack to my own personal pity party. I would have cried to the Macarena. After a month, mostly to keep my family and friends from shopping in the self-help section of Atlantic Books for me, I got out of my pajamas, took the shower I’d been neglecting and decided that if life was going to keep on keeping on around me, I needed to get back
on my feet. Desperate to feel normal again, I took some pretty wacky advice from anyone willing to dish it out. First, I read a book in which the author travels, after a horrible break-up, to a new age massage therapist. In the story, the therapist recommends wearing bright-colored panties to help rebalance sexual chakras and to brighten one's aura. Not knowing or even caring what chakras were, I bought new underwear.
Of course, I was just as miserable in neon lingerie as I’d been in granny panties, so my mother suggested that I make new friends and be more social. Even though I’ve got the handeye coordination of a goldfish, I joined a company softball team. Foolishly, I volunteered to play catcher, an especially difficult position to handle while wearing an aura-brightening thong. When the season ended, I continued doing anything and everything to feel less sad. I wasn’t content with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and a bubble bath, like most girls going through a breakup. Instead, I took up yoga, seriously considered shaving my head, learned to make lasagna and bought an impromptu ticket to Switzerland. The thing is, none of these things worked. When it comes to mending a broken heart, the greatest healer isn’t a new age massage therapist or any aura-brightening piece of clothing – it’s time. Give it long enough and even the most painful heartache subsides. One day, you wake up and realize that every relationship is going to end, until the one that doesn’t. And maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.
What is the Difference Between Void Contract & Voidable Contract? 1526 Yacht Avenue Units A & B, Cape May
THE ABBEY B&B 34 Gurney Street, Cape May
A void contract is one that has no effect due to some fundamental defect. A void contract means that none of the parties to it can legally enforce it, and are usually not valid. Generally no property can pass under a void contract. A voidable contract on the other hand, is a valid contract but the law gives one party an option whether or not to proceed with the agreement. For instance, there may be misrepresentation which allows the innocent party to make certain choices, thus a contract declared voidable.
