The Police Blotter
WHIDBEY ISLAND, Washington - At 12:40pm on April 20, a caller reported seeing a whale next the rocks in the shallow water behind the Exchange. The caller also reported that the whale was wearing a hoodie and acting suspiciously.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “If you were to make little fishes talk, they would talk like whales.” Oliver Goldsmith “The fidelity question is difficult for me. Society has made us believe we’re supposed to be monogamous, but we’re not killer whales, or whatever the monogamous species is.” Rachel Hunter “The whales, you see, eat up the little fish...” Thomas Churchyard “We wanna save the whales, we’ll watch them feed, buzz around them in boats, ‘til they won’t breed.” Dead Kennedys “Whales are humanity’s canary in the coal mine. As ocean pollution levels increase, marine mammals like whales will be among the first to go.” Roger Payne
Daniel Coxe sold the first two parcels on Cape Island in 1699 to Humphrey Hughes (206 acres) and William Jacoks (340 acres). A whaler named Thomas Hand, whose family name is synonymous with Cape May history, purchased Jacoks’s entire property, which encompassed the east side of the island including Schellinger’s Landing, site of Cape May’s modern fishing docks. The official record notes the land parameters as being, “between Randall Hewitt and a pint athwart Cape Island.” Ben Miller

Weird Word Of The Week
CETACEAN This word describes mammals that have become fully adapted to aquatic life – there are 90 species of this variety. Like dolphins, whales are believed to have descended from land animals that returned to the water roughly 50 million years ago after living millions of years on land.

Random Fact Of The Week
The blue whale can weigh over 200 tons but feeds only on krill — a crustacean smaller than a child’s finger. They gain much of their weight while nursing, with a blue whale calf gaining approximately 250 pounds every day during its first three weeks of life.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with Peking Duck. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
e have made an amazing discovery that might launch Exit Zero into the next generation of publishing. While we still love the visceral feel of holding a newsprint copy, we know that not all of our readers can always get their hands on one. Now, not only can you read the latest issue (and flip through archives) on our website at exitzero.us, but you will also be able to read it on your Android-based phones and tablets. Even more exciting is that the paper becomes interactive – you can click links, save phone numbers and share articles with your friends. (Yes, dear advertisers, that IS amazing news for you.) Make sure to head on over to our website for step-by-step instructions on getting started. Click on the big revolving picture that says “Follow Exit Zero on Issuu.” Sorry iPhone and iPad users – if Mac weren’t so petty and exclusive maybe you could read it, too. Sadly, for now you’ll just have to wait. WE had our own version of watergate in town last week, when the city made a real mess of things, causing one of Cape May’s most popular restaurants to lose a LOT of business. The debacle began when the city informed business owners and residents in a zone around the Rusty Nail and Beach Shack (which are both owned by Cape Resorts Group) that their water was going to be shut off the following morning from 8-11. Not much notice for a restaurant and hotel, right? So, the company’s managers informed their guests they wouldn’t be able to shower that morning. And then they posted signs at the Rusty
Nail, informing customers there would be no breakfast served. Unfortunately, the city fell behind schedule, and the water wasn’t shut off until 11. Guess what? No one thought to tell the folks at the Nail and the Beach Shack – and right when the guests got ready to shower, at 11am, off went the water. Nice one. City manager Bruce MacLeod wrote us an email to explain the situation. The work was part of the pesky Grant Street sewer problem which has caused havoc in town for the past couple months, and Bruce said that city workers had kept Cape Resorts Group up to date the whole time. Sure doesn’t sound like it. And we’re still wondering why the Grant Street work ran into the middle of June, but no one from the city ever answers our questions on the subject, each time referring us to the engineering company. As the kids say, that’s super-lame. SOME Exit Zero worker bees were present for Harbor Fest this past weekend, and we can’t think of many better ways to spend a Saturday (unless you happened to be on a luxury yacht on the harbor, that is). Delaware Avenue was packed
with vendors and non-profit organizations, offering plenty of amusement for the crowds. It was a bit balmy, but the harbor breeze, the frozen lemonade and the tasty water ice provided by the cub scouts made life comfortable. At around noon members of the US Coast Guard gave an attention-grabbing search and rescue demonstration from an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter. The sight of a serviceman dangling from the helicopter in wetsuit and flippers brought the crowds to a standstill as folks shaded their eyes and craned their necks to watch. Mark Allen emceed the festival, exhorting visitors to partake in activities that included a cook-off featuring that jewel of the ocean: the scallop. Chefs from Union Park, Depot Market, Lucky Bones, Canyon Club, Wallace’s Harborside Café and the Merion Inn all offered innovative takes on the shellfish. They were aided by students from the Atlantic Cape Community College’s Academy of Culinary Arts. According to Mark, festival-goers consumed 100lbs of scallops that day. As Events Director for the Chamber of Commerce, Doreen Talley was the ringleader, coralling vendors and ensuring everyone was in their proper place. She said “I think the day went really well. In terms of attendance we had at least the number of guests that came last year, which was just a smidge under 10,000.” When we packed up for the day at 5:30pm Doreen was patrolling the streets and tying up loose ends. “I’ll probably be here until 7,” she said. It’s thanks to volunteers like Doreen that we have so many fun festivals in this town.

Sean Taylor Exhibition Opens At SOMA “Viewmaster: The World At Your Fingertips” arrives June 25
O
n Saturday, June 25, Cape May-based artist Sean Taylor returns to SOMA NewArt Gallery in Carpenters Square Mall for his fourth exhibition in the space. Given the success of his previous installments, this year’s showing promises the same captivating images with a new critical angle. Taylor, who holds degrees in history, sociology and education in addition to his certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, is known for work that subtly questions some of our core beliefs. His previous shows, entitled USA, Inc. and Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness hint at the topics Taylor likes to address, all of which are deeply rooted in American history and culture. For this year’s show, Taylor used a toy View-Master as his starting point. “ViewMaster is about seeing the truth, seeing the world through new eyes,” he says. The luscious oil paintings of canaries, amusement parks and beachscapes in gilded frames present familiar sights tinged with
“Enjoy your canary,” oil, acrylic and latex on panel candy-colored nostalgia. In another twist, Taylor presents a wall of reimagined toy advertisements, including a large rendering of the omnipresent View-Master, which seems to stare back at the viewer from heavylidded eyes.
“Each of these characters and images are a reference to a section of our culture or mind-set... Not only are the paintings beautiful, but hopefully they can start a dialogue or narrative,” says Taylor. His paintings, which often include somewhat cryptic text, provide an intriguing catalyst for thought and conversation. Sean Taylor has presented several successful solo shows around Philadelphia. Since going professional he has put on eight solo events and participated in numerous group shows in New York, Miami, Richmond and Washington, DC. All art lovers are invited to attend the Opening Night Artist Reception on the 25th from 6pm to 9pm, where they’ll enjoy light food and drink and a chance to speak with Taylor. The exhibition will be on display at SOMA from June 25 through July 31 in the Carpenters Square Mall at 31 Perry Street. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 10pm. For further details, call 898-7488 or visit somagallery.net.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about whales. This week’s winner is Will Fladorf, 14, from Cape May. We found Will on the Washington Street Mall. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: Have you ever seen a whale? Yes. Are whales fish or mammals? Mammals. What’s the biggest species of whale? Humpback? Will wins a $50 gift certificate to Vincenzo’s Little Italy for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! iddle-aged men suffer from many maladies: diabetes, hypertension, etc., but doctors have added a new one to the list, which many of my brethren don’t even know they have. It seems a dearth of mid-40s single men (compared with women the same age) means they’re fiercely pursued, inflating opinions of their own attractiveness. The imbalance has created what researchers call Hotness Delusion Syndrome. By age 44, there are 15% fewer available males than females. An available man receives lots of attention because he’s the only thing going around. Balding and paunchy though he may be, what he sees in the mirror is nothing less than trim, taut, and (so he’s told) terrific. The simple cure for HDS, obviously, is wives. Doctors recommend that men only go to bars with their wives stored safely nearby, to be released when the disease strikes. It would also help if men just got a clue. Just because certain dimwitted or lonely females consider you god’s gift, that doesn’t
make it true, nor should it encourage you to act like a teenager hopped up on raging hormones (I’m looking at you, Congressmen Lee and Weiner). Strutting it on the beach is a visible symptom of HDS. While Cape May no longer bans Speedos, too many guys wear too little on the sand. I’ve no delusions about my body, so the sunblocking shirt I sport is as much for your protection as it is mine. Were I 20 again, I might be more impressed with my own hotness. All those
workouts made a difference. I still had my high school swimmer’s body. Life was good. These days I spend more time refining my sense of humor and polishing off sixpacks than I do avoiding refined sugar and polishing my six-pack. No matter how many dates I go on, I’m not crazy enough to think that I match up with that beefcake sitting on the lifeguard stand. The flip side of HDS is that cougars are on the prowl. With a shortage of same-aged men, women in their 40s are going to be looking for younger men. There’s nothing wrong with that. There’s a new generation of empowered women, and if they want to go shopping for boy toys, they’ve earned the right. Help fight HDS by joining me for dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I’ll leave my delusions at home.

o Right ahead. Google it. “Zucchini and the Garden State.” One of the first things you’ll find is “The Zucchini That Devoured New Jersey.” Then there’s the raft of improbable recipes like zucchini crab cakes and zucchini pie. There are plenty of tasty ways to serve the delicious and comical zucchini. We’re here to tantalize you with our easy menu recommendations. Zucchini is one of our favorite vegetables. It’s good all year round, but especially in summer when it pairs so well with tomatoes and eggplant. Plus you can make it into dishes that can be served cold or at room temperature. Here’s a batch that takes you from soup to nuts. They make up a complete zucchini meal. EZ Zucchini Basil Buttermilk Shake 5 minutes, 2 hours to chill 2 appetizer servings Small glasses of cold soup like this one can be found at chic New York cocktail parties passed by waiters along with the hors d’oeuvres. ½ small zucchini, chopped ¾ c low-fat buttermilk 4-6 large basil leaves lemon zest kosher salt pepper Put the zucchini, buttermilk and basil in a blender and
puree. Season with a pinch of lemon zest, salt and fresh ground pepper. Chill two hours and serve in small glasses garnished with basil leaves, decorating the tray with zucchini blossoms, if available.

Marinated Zucchini with Mint or Basil 20 minutes 2 hours to drain and marinate serves 6 This dish originated in the Roman ghetto and was enjoyed by both the wealthy and the poor, who made a meal out of it with bread. It still makes a good sandwich for the beach. Try the mint version with goat cheese, raisins and toasted pine nuts on hearty bread. 6 small zucchini, trimmed and sliced lengthwise ¼ c olive oil ½ c chopped mint or basil 3 garlic cloves, chopped salt and black pepper ½ c red wine vinegar Spread the zucchini slices on a baking rack and let air dry for one hour (or on paper towels overnight). Fry in hot olive oil in a sauté pan in a single layer for about four minutes until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Place the zucchini in layers in a glass dish, dotting each layer with the chopped mint or basil, garlic, salt and pepper and sprinkling with wine vin-

Press the drained spinach between paper towels to remove excess moisture. In a large skillet, sauté the squash, red pepper, and onion in hot oil over medium-high heat for six minutes, or until tender. Remove from heat, and stir in spinach, chicken, next six ingredients, and 1 1/2 cups of the cheese. Spoon into a lightly greased 13x9-inch baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes, or until bubbly. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and bake five more minutes. And for dessert….. Jane’s Zucchini Chocolate Cake 1 ½ hours serves 10
2 ½ c sifted flour ¼ c cocoa 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt ½ c butter or margarine ½ c oil 1 ¾ c sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla ½ c buttermilk 2 c grated zucchini 1 16-oz package semisweet chocolate chips 3/4 c chopped walnuts Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, oil and sugar; beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Blend in the vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the zucchini. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips and nuts. Bake for 55 minutes, or until cake tests done. Cool in pan. Cut in squares. Never tell the kids that they’ve just eaten squash for dessert!
Need more ideas? Remember how Julia Child made boats out of those giant zucchini that overrun your garden at the end of summer? Check out the zucchini boat recipe (Courgette à la Belle Soeur) in From Julia Child’s Kitchen, Alfred A. Knopf. After boiling the thing in a galvanized wash tub, she scoops it out and fills the “boat” with lobster, chicken and vegetable salads.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
do feel bad about the whales. So much so, in fact, that I seldom take my whalebone walking cane out any more, and have gone right off blubber pie. Of course, back in my day, whales were merely the buffalo of the oceans, which was just as well, given that we’d pretty much run out of the buffalo of the land. And I blame my drinking buddy, Melville, for making it worse with his Moby Dick nonsense. He’d been down for the weekend in Cape May, and we’d done the usual activities: hunted for bear, cheated Indians out of a few million acres, smuggled whiskey, harpooned a brace of whales and refused to tip our hats at the ladies: we were quite the bad boys, Melville and I. Sated, and smelling of sea salt, blubber, fur and dishonesty, we had retired to the Brown Room to toast the day’s successes with some single malt. As the drink flowed, so did Melville become one of those dreadful maudlin drunks, consumed with guilt about what he called the “over-hunting” of whales. Well,
I have never believed that there is any one thing that a chap should do that he should not over-do (excepting the paying of taxes), hunting included, and I said so (I still believe the very same, with the exceptions now of killing animals for fun/encouraging trained chimpanzees to perform tricks/letting people from Wildwood into surrounding areas). Furthermore, as Melville continued to blub into his whisky like a drunken Irishman or a regular Scotsman, I happened to glance out of the window and who should I see taking
a dip in the ocean but Fatty Arbuckle, who was apparently in town to ride out some awful scandal or other. He had chosen not to wear a bathing costume, which is a bold move for any gent, and an exceedingly rash one for a chap as corpulent as Fatty. I had an idea and yelled loudly: “By GAD, sir! A white whale!” To my hidden delight, Melville ran to the window, crying like a baby and wailing “An albino whale! It’s a sign, a sign, I tell you!” I expected Fatty to ruin the jape by emerging from the sea and looking not like a whale, but a rather like a man of whalish proportions. But for some unknown reason he rolled on to his back and blew a spout of water from his fat little mouth. At the sight of this display, Melville fainted dead away, and when recovered, he went on to write that damnable book. By then it was too late to admit the joke, and I felt obliged to pay Arbuckle a visit and request his silence by way of a blow to the temple with a boating hook. Don’t judge me – I am on the side of the whales, now, and it was for the best.

Customer Service
G
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
rowing up in Philadelphia, my best buddy was a boy named Vincent. He sharpened my pencils during arithmetic and bought me an arts and crafts book for Christmas. One day, Vincent asked me to be his “most special friend.” It was the moment I realized that boys don’t have cooties. Or, maybe, that they do have cooties, but that I don’t mind all that much. When I turned 11, my family moved to Cape May County and Vincent and I lost touch. I made friends with other boys of course, but none of them ever sharpened my pencils during math class. For college, I went back to the city, where I got a job refereeing f lag football games on the campus lawn. After a game, one of the players helped me carry the equipment bags. As we walked, he told me that his name was Vincent. Later, I realized that this wasn’t just any Vincent. This was my most special childhood friend. So much of life is timing. What if Vincent hadn’t been playing in this football
game on this particular day? And what could have happened between us if I hadn’t moved away when I did? How different life would be if the timing had been just a little different. If timing is everything, then working in the restaurant is a constant reminder of this. You do your best to schedule reservations, but if just one guest shows up 20 minutes late, the entire evening is thrown off. In the kitchen, the fish guy needs to finish the salmon dish at the same time the meat guy is finishing a well-done steak and the pantry guy is finishing a salad. If that salad is done before the steak, it wilts in the heat. If the fish is done before the salad,
the dish will be cool by the time it hits the table. Out in the dining room, bread must reach the table before drinks, which must reach the table before appetizers. It sounds easy, but a 14-step cocktail often takes longer to prepare than a plate of oysters. It gets tricky. Timing will make or break an evening in the restaurant, including my own. If I hadn’t been waiting on this magazine’s editor at table 24 two years ago, I never would have gotten a job writing for Exit Zero. And if I hadn’t been walking by table six at seven o’clock three years ago, I wouldn’t have met the woman who cut me a break on a used Jeep. I grow excited when I think that my next night in the restaurant might just be the best timed yet. After all, if the timing is right, who knows what might happen in the dining room? I could meet another friendly guest willing to cut me a break on a car. Or Anderson Cooper could sit in my section and fall madly in love with the way I recite specials. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I know you’ve addressed the question of whether it is appropriate to wear black to a wedding, but here’s one – is it okay to wear anything BUT black to a funeral? I went to a funeral for the first time last week, but I don’t have a black suit, so I wore a gray one. Is that wrong? – Ill-Suited Dear Suited The Answer Lady commends you for wearing a suit to a funeral, regardless of color. The only time a suit would be inappropriate at a funeral is if it were a bright multi-colored plaid and accessorized by a clown nose and oversize shoes. Also inappropriate for a funeral: baseball caps, shorts, flip-flops, T-shirts or tank tops, chewing gum or, heaven forbid, chewing tobacco. For the ladies: no low-cut dresses, see-through tops or bare midriffs, too-tight
Wise answers to perplexing questions
skirts or pants, and no heels that one literally teeters upon. And for both ladies and gentlemen: no sweatpants, no exceptions. If one is simply paying one’s respects at a viewing on the way home from work, by the way, whatever one wears for work, – i.e. a uniform – is completely acceptable for standing in a receiving line to say a few words to the grieving family. The Answer Lady has a friend who showed up at the very end of her own dear mother’s viewing, still dressed in his chef’s uniform. This did not
make the Answer Lady any less grateful to see him; in fact she found it touching. This uniform exception does not apply, of course, if one works at Hooter’s or Chippendale’s; in this case one should have the foresight to pack an appropriate ensemble. Dear Answer Lady I am Facebook friends with an acquaintance who apparently split with her boyfriend, since every status update now consists of sad song lyrics and pathetic quotes about how her life is ruined. It’s a drag to read, but I don’t know her well enough to say, “Hey – snap out of it.” – Annoyed Dear Annoyed This is nearly as bad as couples who fight on FB. (The Answer Lady knows a couple who conducted a day-long argument in half-hour increments via Facebook, apparently from different rooms within their house. The only consolation for the Answer Lady and their mutual friends was that they weren’t literally arguing in front of us, like they usually do.) The Answer Lady feels that “snap out of it” would be appropriate in this case, but maybe something nicer; perhaps “he’s a fool.”

braham Van Helsing, now known as Leopold Furst, pulled back the canvas and anxiously entered the dimly lit tent. “How is she?” he asked the African midwife poised at his wife’s head. “She is fine,” the midwife answered, dabbing a cloth on her patient’s forehead. Abraham knew it was a very broad definition of the word “fine,” seeing as how his wife had been quite clinically insane since the death of their son some years earlier. “Is the child near?” he asked. “Any time now,” the midwife replied. Insane or no, the Catholic Church still considered her to be alive, and as Abraham was a faithful husband, he had no choice but to sire an heir with her. The process was not pleasant, but it was almost complete. “Excellent, I’ll return shortly.” He left the tent and made his way across Catch up on past chapters of “Vampire City” at www.exitzero.us

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 Vampire City ? From Page 74 the fairground. It had been nearly a year since he’d struck the deal with Vlad Dracula. In exchange for agreeing to move his clan of vampires out of Europe and across the Atlantic, Abraham promised not to harm any Dracula vampire he encountered, so long as they left the continent immediately. For the most part the agreement had held. For Abraham it meant peace for him, his family and friends. For Vlad it meant no further harassment or killing of his kind, and a fertile new feeding ground in the unsuspecting Americas. However, the armistice did not hold for those who refused to leave. The Leopold Furst Travelling Circus Show provided excellent cover for Abraham and his vampire-hunting team. They drew their financing not only from the ticket-buyers who filled the grounds each night, but also from royalties of his business partner Bram Stoker’s “fictional” account of their exploits. He stomped through the mud and into a second, larger tent, where his men waited, smoking cigarettes, pulling from flasks of whiskey, readying for the night’s grim work. “My wife is very close,” he said to his charges as they snapped to attention. “So I will not be joining you this evening.” This was met by silent, understanding nods. “But you have your orders; I trust you will see them through.” He turned and left as the men gathered themselves for the hunt. It pained Abraham to walk away from them. They were good men and he enjoyed their company, but mostly he would miss the kill; it made him feel young. With each passing expedition it became more evident that he was not a young man anymore, at which time it dawned on him that if his crusade were to continue on without him, as it clearly must, he would need to sire a son, and as quickly as possible. So it was with a tinge of
regret at missing the hunt, but a heart full of pride at the thought of an heir, that he strode back into the first tent to greet the birth of his child. “I am back, Tituba, what can I do to assist…” The words died in his throat. “Mister Abraham,” Tituba, the midwife, said. “It came out of nowhere.” Abraham set his jaw. “It’s all right, Tituba. They’re a devious lot. Come to me. Slowly.” Tituba shuffled across the dirt and to Abraham’s side. Before them his wife lay on the bed, soaked with sweat, thick with child, writhing and moaning in the prison of her demented mind, while at her ivory neck stood a hideous creature, all sagging gray flesh and black, reedy hair. “Van Helsing…” the creature hissed, bearing rows of yellow teeth from its rictus grin. Abraham locked on the creature’s red eyes, “I know not of whom you speak, my name is Leopold Furst, I run a travelling circus. What business brings you here?” The creature clicked its jaws and snapped its drooling mouth, the saliva splashing down on Abraham’s defenseless wife. His fury grew, but he remained stoic. “Your death, Van Helsing… Your death brings me here…” Abraham stealthily moved a hand to his leg. Under his long coat he fingered the weapon he had hidden there; a 9-inch long wooden rod with a hidden blade. It was ornately carved and had seen much death. “Again I say I know nothing of this Van Helsing, I am a simple business man. Please move away from my wife.” The creature moved a long fingernail across her neck. The fury brought a flush to his cheeks, but he remained still, hand on the weapon. “Your tricks… may work on others… Van Helsing… but I… I am sent from the master…” The Master. The Count. Dracula. Abraham worked the

But I promise you; I am not this Van Helsing you seek.” The creature licked the hole of its mouth, it had no lips, with a black tongue. “The master… Vlad… I’ve been following you Van Helsing… following a year… with the master’s orders… your bloodline… will be no more… after tonight…” Abraham was not surprised that the vile Dracula would seek out his death even after leaving the continent. But he was surprised the villain had lost enough of his soul to set the killer upon his wife and unborn child. The creature, quivering with bloodlust and so near Elizabeth’s neck, shot twin plumes of grey-yellow matter out of its nostril slits. “You will have pain, Van Helsing… and I… I will reap… my reward… I… will have my…” “Enough talk,” Abraham said, “let’s have at it, shall we?” With a flick of the wrist the blade appeared. With another flick it struck Tituba across the femur. A jet of blood exploded from the leg and the vampire creature went slack, undone by a ravenous hunger to drink the blood, suck the blood, bathe in the blood.
A jet of blood exploded from the leg and the vampire creature went slack, undone by a ravenous hunger to drink the blood, suck the blood, bathe in the blood. It was only a moment, but it was only a moment Abraham needed. “Die!” he cried and leapt the distance between them. The creature squealed and went to her neck, too late to escape Van Helsing’s blade, but swift enough to puncture the flesh. “No!” Abraham cried as the blade split the air. Seconds later he held the creature’s head in his hands. The body fell to the ground with a thud and immediately gave off a bluish mist. “Elizabeth…” “Mr Van Helsing…” Tituba said from the far corner, clutching her spurting leg. It had all taken only 10 seconds. She knew without assistance she only had 20 more to live. Abraham went to her. “I am sorry, Tituba. It was the only way.” “I understand, sir…” “Good girl.” He ripped a blouse from the drying line, tore it into several strips and cinched them tightly around Tituba’s wound. “Keep your hands on this.”

Tituba nodded. “Elizabeth…” Abraham went back to his wife. The puncture wounds were not deep, but they did not have to be to do their beastly work. He wiped them clean with his fingers, smelled the blood; the slightest whiff of ammonia, the telltale sign. “Curses…” he muttered and clenched his fists over his wife’s chest. Tears squeezed from his eyes. His wife was lost. He knew the Elizabeth he’d grown to love and marry had been gone for many years now, and that the woman that lay before him now was a mere earthly shell, crafted from God’s mud, but still he loved the memory of her. Now he would have to destroy her. He again drew the blade, said a prayer, laid it on Elizabeth’s throat. She writhed beneath it, unaware of anything but the madness that clutched her soul. He raised the blade, prepared to strike. Elizabeth went suddenly still. “Abraham?” She asked, lucid, and regarded him through her cloudy blue eyes. “Abraham, what on earth…” He lowered the sword. “Can it be?” She struggled to rise. “Abraham, where are we?” He went to her side. “Elizabeth, I… there

Vampire City ? From Page 76 is so much to tell…” “AHHHHHHHHHH!” She convulsed, her body and mind rent asunder once more. But this time it was not madness that took control. “Mr Van Helsing, the child…” Tituba said, blood leaking between her fingers, “ “Good Lord!” He dropped the blade. In the moment of danger he’d forgotten why he’d come back to the tent. His son. “The water,” he ordered the hobbled African over Elizabeth’s howling. She went to the kettle. Elizabeth shrieked and thrashed. He held her still and spoke to her, unsure if his words meant anything to her, if her momentary lucidity remained. He urged her to push, to breathe, to push again. “There he is!” Tituba cried as the head appeared. Abraham guided the child from the womb gently. Tears streaked his ruddy face. Then the child was there in his hands, like a baby bird, all cawing and hunger. It was the most beautiful sound Abraham had heard since the birth of his first son. “Good girl,” he said to Elizabeth, who lay still on the bed. He handed the child to Tituba, “Clean and swaddle him. Gently. You hold precious cargo.” Abraham sniffed away his tears and washed his hands in the basin. A jagged smile split his face. He had not smiled in a long time and his face barely remembered how. But the joy was short-lived. He stopped washing his hands; he had forgotten in his joy that they would not need to be clean for what lie ahead. He turned back to his wife. She was physically still and spoke to herself in a language only she could understand. He went to her side, stroked her long hair, and kissed her forehead. “Safe travels, my love.” He picked up the blade, stood, and raised it over his head with one thick arm. Elizabeth looked up at him, eyes red, flesh mottled with grey splotches. She was turning, he knew. He’d seen
it all too often. “Abraham…” With an anguished cry he brought the blade home, swiftly, and it was done. Then he shook, his body expunging the pain, fear, guilt. Tears didn’t come this time as they served him no purpose. He simply let the anguish work through him, then collected himself. From the drying line he took a sheet, covered his wife’s still-warm corpse and placed her severed head in a carpetbag. This drew a sharp sigh but he maintained his composure. Next he examined the steaming body of the dead vampire. There was nothing remarkable about it, nothing he had not seen before. It was the head he was most interested in. He picked it up by the scruff, examined the teeth, the eyes. He shook it, stuck a finger into the neck and fished around. It was wet, but there was no blood. This was an excellent sign, a sign that the beast had not had time to ingest Elizabeth’s blood and replace it with his own. The bite had only been deep and long enough to inject the disease. It was quite possible that the child may yet be unaffected. The virus may not have had time to reach the womb. Abraham hoped so. He was not sure he could destroy his wife and his newborn son in the same hour. “Come have a look, sir,” Tituba said. Tituba had been with the Van Helsings for many years, caring for Elizabeth, keeping their household affairs in order. She had seen enough of Abraham’s grisly work to be unaffected by it and so was the calmest person in the room. He took the impossibly small child in his hands. The bond was immediate; the child cooed at the sight of him and squinted into his big face, blind as a mole. “He is beautiful, like his mother,” he said. “Yes,” Tituba agreed, “she is.” Abraham cocked an eyebrow.

Vampire City ? From Page 78 “You heard me.” Abraham frowned, undid the swaddling, and examined the child. It was, indeed, a girl. “Harumph…” “Come now,” Tituba cajoled him. “What be wrong with a girl?” Abraham was not prepared to answer. All along he’d assumed a boy. His family was all boys. Elizabeth had been the only girl out of eight. A boy seemed inevitable. But here she was. “Is she not your child?” Tituba asked. “Yes. Yes she is,” he answered. “Do you not love her?” “Yes. Yes I do.” Tituba nucked his chin. “Then get on with it.” Abraham examined her by the candlelight. “A beautiful girl. She will be the finest, strongest, smartest girl this world has ever seen.” “That’s a father.” “But Tituba, we must keep a keen eye. She was born from an infected mother. At the first sign of… we must…” “We shall do what must be done, Abraham. Now, if you wouldn’t mind, sir… my leg is throbbing like to fall off.’ “Of course, Tituba.” He retrieved a

He exposed her leg and set to work. “Take a swig of this,” he said and handed her a bottle of brandy. “Bite down on this,” he said and handed her a strap of leather. Abraham worked slowly with the needle and thread. As he did so he looked into her face, barely wincing at what must have been excruciating pain. She was from good stock. “Oh, my Lord…” she whispered and took another pull from the flask. Abraham smiled and knew what must be done and spoke to her with gentle words. “Tituba, you’ve been a part of this family for as long as I can remember. You’ve been loyal, forthright and virtuous. I have been proud to call you my servant, I have been proud to call you my friend, and now I would be equally proud to call you my wife.” Tituba, even through the haze of pain and the alcohol, was shocked. “Mr Abraham, what in the world…” He continued. “You know me as well
as any woman could ever hope to, I know you will remain steadfastly my friend and companion, and this child needs a mother. While there may be no romantic love between us, I do love you as deeply as I love anyone or anything else on this earth.” “Mr Abraham…” “I won’t hear any nonsense, Tituba, and I will not take no for an answer. You will be my wife, the matter is closed.” “I was just going to ask,” she winced against the needle, “where’s the damn ring?” They locked eyes and burst into laughter. Among the death and ruin they laughed, as odd a couple as you could likely conjure. In the following years they raised the child together. They kept their marriage a secret, but among his inner circle it was known that they were a family. In time a romantic love blossomed between them, sprung from their shared love of the girl they named Hannah. The Leopold Furst ruse ended the night the vampire assassin entered their tent, so the Wolfgang Von Port Travelling Amusement took its place as they continued their work across the European countryside. And Hannah, aside from one biological quirk, displayed no signs of being borne of vampire blood. In all, they were as reasonably happy as they could hope to be, and would be for a long time.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: whales. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 2. In this 1940 Disney film, a not-quite-real boy ends up in the belly of a whale named Monstro. 5 . Greek for “river horse,” this is the secondlargest land mammal in the world and the closet relative to the whale. 6 . This shop on the Washington Street Mall carries toys, jewelry, a selection of Exit Zero books and a great variety of seashells. 10 . You might think this word only refers to baby cows, but it applies equally to newborn whales. 11 . This biblical character is blamed for a great storm at sea and cast overboard, only to be subsequently snapped up by a “great fish.” 12 . This Arctic whale is the aquatic equivalent of a unicorn (or rhinoceros). 13 . This knobbly-headed whale has a thing or two in common with a certain bell-ringer from Notre Dame. 15 . Instead of teeth, many whales have this protein-based, comb-like structure, which is used to filter food from water. 17 . Famous for writing Moby Dick, this

American author did his research aboard the whaling ship Acushnet. 21 . This all-white Arctic whale is characterized by the rounded protuberance on its head. 22 . This whale, named for its color, is the largest animal ever known to exist. 23. S ometimes confused with dolphins, these whales prefer to eat squid and might be handy if you’re lost in a storm. 24 . Most whales were caught for this vascularized fat, which was used to manufacture soap, leather, wax and lamp oil. Down 1 . This handicraft was made by sailors who engraved on whale bones and teeth. 3 . He sailed on the Pequod with a monomaniacal determination to slay the White Whale. 4 . Homologous to nostrils in other mammals, this orifice allows whales and
dolphins to breathe while floating on the water. 7 . This sea monster is mentioned six times in the Old Testament. In Modern Hebrew, it translates to “whale.” 8 . This form of biological sonar is used by bats and whales. 9 . This is something a stereotypical whaler might shout when his prey surfaces for air. 14 . Commonly known as orca, this kind of whale had its star turn in Free Willy. 16 . This toothed whale was heavily hunted in the 19th century for the white, waxy substance found in its head. 17 . This spear-like weapon is attached to a rope or chain so that the hunter can pull in his haul. 18 . This butter substitute was originally made with whale fat. 19 . Don’t be fooled by the fins – whales belong to this warm-blooded group. 20 . These Eskimo people continue to hunt for whales in Canada and Greenland.

Activity Of The Week
T
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Inactivity
hey say “A change is as good as a rest,” and coming to Cape May for a change of scenery can be very refreshing. After a trying week of work, or final exams, you may appreciate the change. But actual rest is important, too. We learned this from our kids. On a recent weekend, as the grownups planned activity after activity, the kids rebelled. All they wanted was to stay on the beach. Their logic was unbeatable: “All that other stuff is only here because of this beach.” It was easy to give in. It wasn’t a perfect beach day, but it was a lovely day for lounging. We stopped planning, organizing, and checking the time. We just stopped. We put on more sunscreen. We watched the kids play frisbee. We napped, enjoying that delicious feeling of waking up with no idea how long you’ve been dozing. We shared newspapers and magazines, reading only headlines. We ordered pizza and ate on the beach, shielding it from greedy seagulls. We missed the trolley tour but saw dolphins and the sunset. As darkness fell, we strolled back to the house. We sat on the porch, fans going
full blast to keep the mosquitos away, and chatted. We played charades and slapped at bugs. We waved to passing bicycles. Nobody learned anything about Victorian life. Nobody did any dishes. Nothing productive was accomplished. Our bookmarks never even moved. Everybody went to bed early. The next morning, we were

new people. Relaxation is crucial to optimal health. It lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow, reduces anger and improves concentration. It even boosts confidence – and who doesn’t need a little boost? As the Mayo Clinic advises, though, relaxation is a skill requiring practice. For guidance, look to your dog, or follow the advice of your doctor. Doctors advise visualization techniques, forming mental images to take an imaginary journey to a peaceful place. During visualization, try to use as many senses as you can – smell, sight, sound and touch. In other words, pretend. Or just go to the beach. Smell the salt air, listen to the waves, feel the sand, gaze at the sky, taste a lemon ice. Rest. Spend a day doing nothing in Cape May. The next day, or next visit, take advantage of all the activities the town has to offer and return to your busy schedule of tours and theater, mini-golf and tennis. For one day, rest. Doctor’s orders. Next week: Fourth of July Fireworks

Frankie is a very handsome boy who is friendly and social but will require training. He needs someone knowledgeable with strong dogs with a firm hand to give him guidance. He can be very playful but he is rough so he will have to go to a home without cats, dogs or kids. He really is a good boy who needs someone willing to spend the time with him and give him the training he needs. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Calvin is a handsome two-yearold boy waiting patiently for a second chance. An active home where he will receive lots of training and exercise would be best suited for Calvin. Since he can be so enthusiastic we recommend a home without children, as he could possibly knock over smaller kids. Otherwise, he just needs someone to give him the love, support and confidence he needs to thrive. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Zola is a shy gal who is uneasy when she first meets new people. She will need a firm hand when guiding her. She does know some basic commands but will still need more training. She can become excited and jumpy when playing so we recommend a home with children over the age of 14. If you have experience with bigger dogs stop in and meet her. She may be the right one for you. Adoption fee is $95.

Fury is a very handsome guy who is a bit shy. He was quite timid when he first arrived but as time has passed he has become more friendly toward everyone. He also does just fine with other cats so if you’re thinking about adopting a companion and friend for your existing cat stop in and check out Fury today. Adoption fee is $35.

Joey came to our shelter as a kitten with his sister. While his sister was adopted a long time ago, he’s still here waiting for a home. He used to be shy, but has really come around! He may be a little slow to warm up to you, but when he does, he’s just lovely. Come by the shelter and meet him today. Adoption fee is $35.
«
Comet, an adult gray and white tabby, is a lucky guy! Found outside right in the middle of a horrific snowstorm, a good Samaritan took him to our shelter. Though his fur is a bit thin, he’s gradually putting on weight and starting to feel a sense of hope. Won’t you give Comet the home he deserves? Adoption fee is $20.

he closing week of Say Goodnight, Gracie can only mean one thing: next week is the official opening night for The Understudy. The Understudy by Theresa Rebeck is the story of an action hero from feature films making his Broadway debut in a play by Franz Kafka. His understudy arrives for a rehearsal and it turns out the understudy was engaged to the female stage manager. That relationship provides the fodder for outrageous comedy and insightful observations about our culture. Three New York actors bring this wonderful work to Cape May Stage. The next night is the official opening night. Join the party after the show at the Pier House on Beach Drive and meet Kristen Calgaro, G. R. Johnson and Luke Darnell. There is always a celebratory energy after an opening night, particularly after a comedy. The designers and director will be in attendance and they always enjoy talking about the work. Grab a cocktail and enjoy a special night. And the exciting news continues because Cape May Stage’s spring fundraiser, Denim & Diamonds, is next Sunday, June 26th at the Corinthian Yacht Club. This is the “see and be seen” event of the year and a wonderful excuse to wear something glittery with your dress-up denim. There will be great music supplied by Blondage and an auction with new and exciting prizes. It is guaranteed to be fun – and while you are enjoying yourself, you are also helping to bring the finest theatre and education out-
Clockwise: Luke Darnell, G.R. Johnson and Kristen Calgaro star in Cape May Stage’s new show, “The Understudy.” Meet them after their opening-night performance at the Pier House. It is events like Denim & Diamonds that provide the support for the growing reputation of Cape May Stage. People here see cutting edge theatrical events before anyone else. The New Victory Theatre in Times Square just announced their new season, starting with The Little Prince comprising the same cast you saw at Cape May Stage. We are so thankful to all of our supporters and that list expands with each new season. More and more people are hearing about Cape May Stage and coming here to see what all that talk is about. Bird Droppings
W
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
itmer Stone’s opening line in his species account of the Osprey is debatable: “The Osprey or Fish Hawk as it is universally known on the New Jersey coast, is probably more closely associated with the seashore, in the popular mind, than any other bird.” Very probably, most people think of Laughing Gull as the iconic bird of the shore. Nevertheless, Stone's partiality to this wonderful bird shines throughout his description. If you want to read it, track down a copy of Bird Studies at Old Cape May. Hard-bound originals are going for around $200 and up. Or... you can read on. Gather a bit of Fish Hawk lore from the pages of Exit Zero. Osprey are only slightly smaller than eagles and have configurations that harken to gulls – crooked wings and all. Boldly patterned, dark and white, the birds are a fixture standing atop their large stick nests, soaring against cloud-pocked skies, or hovering just offshore in search of their
primary prey: fish. I said primary, not exclusive, because I have seen Osprey carrying mammalian prey. Once. I believe it was a muskrat (but am not certain of this). Osprey arrive in our region in March. They remain until November. Many birds winter in South America. Second year birds in fact, remain in the south not returning
to North America until they are almost two years old. The only continent that Osprey do not breed on is South America. The birds there originated here. Not long ago, Osprey were uncommon, bordering on rare. During Stone’s time he observed that “we constantly see the Fish Hawks f lapping heavily on their way back and forth from their nests...” I read this to mean that the birds were then common in the 1920s and 1930s when Stone made his observations. In the '60s and '70s the population crashed. Yep, that old DDT story again. Older residents will recall the saturation spraying of mosquitoes that was commonplace before the dark side of DDT was discovered. In short, it short-circuited the ability of many birds of prey to breed successfully. Now after more than 30 years of recovery, the birds are once again a common fixture in the summer landscape. Just as

Bird Droppings ? From Page 105 Stone observes, we too “constantly see the bird.” I never thought I’d live to see a time when Osprey were pretty near everywhere. I’m delighted I did. An abundance of Osprey attests to a healthy environment. Lots of Osprey means lots of fish. For the past several weeks, I’ve seen Osprey coming ashore with menhaden in their talons. Later in the season, bluefish will figure more prominently in the diet. Occasionally larger fish are attempted. Clay Sutton once told me that his father once caught a large striper that had the talons of an Osprey embedded in its back. The bird had long since disintegrated. All that was left were the talons. I once saw, or more accurately, almost saw an Osprey pulled under by a fish that was too large to bear away. It happened just off Cape May Point. The bird went into the water and then f loated there, wings spread, unable to break free of the fish or the water. I turned away. Looked back. And there was nothing there. No bird on the water. No bird f lying away. All gone. Like humans, sometimes an Osprey’s
An osprey, which used to be known as a fish hawk eyes are bigger than its... In a few short weeks, the air over Cape May will ring with the piping call of young Osprey new on the wing. It’s one of the best sounds in nature and one that is absolutely in sync with a visit to the Jersey shore. Lucky us. It’s difficult not to take a walk along any stretch of beach in Cape May and not see Osprey. But if you aren’t sure what you are looking for, just stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers and they’ll be glad to show you. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
T
Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island
he best boyfriend I ever had was a handsome blonde. He liked to cuddle. And he was loyal. His name was Sparky, and he was a Golden Retriever. He died when he was 12, which, if what I’ve read is true, translates to 84 in human years. To figure out dog years, apparently, you multiply by seven. Whenever I have a human boyfriend, I have to recalculate his age, too, according to boy years. To figure out boy years, subtract by seven. A man my age, for example, is technically 25, but operates with the maturity level of an 18-year-old. This is why it’s safe to date older men. Like a good bottle of wine, guys get better with age. Take my friend Jordan. When he was 25, his favorite pastime was funneling PBR through a diving snorkel in his pajamas. Seven years later, he’s traded in the snorkel for a leather briefcase. Now, he’s a successful financial advisor. Of course, dating an older man has its drawbacks. My sister has worked in the food and beverage industry for a long time, and she knows that when a girl comes to dinner with a man old enough to be her dad, wait
staff will play a game called “boyfriend or father?” Servers, hostesses, and bus boys will place bets before trying to get this couple tipsy enough to either make out at the table (boyfriend) or stumble over to the Washington Commons gelato shop for dessert (father). People judge this kind of thing. Or, I should say, they judge this kind of woman. Twentysomething girls who dip into the middle-aged man pool are labeled gold-diggers, while middle-aged men who date twenty-something

women are considered, well, pimps. And yet, the more time a girl spends in Cape May County, the more she realizes this: If you write off men who are married or attached, men addicted to mind-altering substances, men who are jerks, men who are happily unemployed, men who are gay, men who simply aren’t interested in you AND men who’ve got just a little gray behind the ears, there isn’t going to be anyone left. Maybe dealing with the stigma of dating an older man is a small price to pay for a nice evening spent with a decent, worldly guy. To be honest, I’d rather date someone I don’t have a great deal in common with, including age. There’s more to learn this way. He can tell me about things I’ve never experienced – like black-and-white television or Beatlemania – and vice versa. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your guy running off with his twentysomething secretary if you ARE the twentysomething secretary. So until I find an older guy, or the 25-yearold who defies the law of boy years, I’m in the market for another cuddly, handsome blonde.

Tom Sims reviews East Lynne Theater Company's production of “He and She”
ouples, are you ready for a little spark? He and She is the first performance of the season for East Lynne Theater Company. Certainly, this play depicts a battle of the sexes, but behind the battle lines is a touching story of a couple trying to fight the regime of stereotypical gender roles while engendering one another’s admiration and affection. The story is about He, artist Tom Herford (played by Tom Byrn) and She, artist Anne Herford (played by first-time East Lynne actor Molly O’Neill). The play begins with Tom’s excitement over a piece he is about finished that he is entering into a high-profile, lucrative competition. Tom expresses his enthusiasm to his staff member Keith McKenzie (played by Dave Holyoak), and of course his fervor is dutifully matched. When Tom shows the piece to his wife, there is less fervor. That’s where this play really hits home. How many times do we find ourselves in conflict with a significant influence in our lives? You’re overjoyed, and they are expressing concern or disappointment. The struggle between the two is palatable and real – she

Emily Cheney and Dave Holyoak perform in "He and She." Gayle Stahlhuth trying to politely criticize while he tries to stand his ground. She offers her husband an opportunity to use a new idea of hers. The presentation of the idea in the play represents the quintessential
conflict between male and female. Tom thinks the idea is brilliant, but he will not use it because it’s not of the caliber of his work. Anne decides to use the idea to enter the competition. How will it end up? The growth of these characters, their depth and range, are a true tribute to playwright Rachel Crothers, who penned the piece in the early 1900s. Once again, East Lynne Theater Company has gathered an unbelievably talented cast for this work. From Emily Cheney, who plays Keith’s not-so-blushing bride-to-be, to Ashley Kowzun, who plays Tom’s sister Daisy, a fiercely independent woman. There are two characters who really stand out: Dr Reynolds, Anne’s father and a chronic instigator, convincingly portrayed by John Cameron Weber. A true standout is Grace Wright playing Millicent, daughter of Tom and Anne. Grace lights up every scene in which she appears with her bright red dress (an excellent choice on the part of costume designer Marion Brady). Take your He or She to this performance! You’ll not get the chance to see a play as tightly produced on a subject matter as timely as it is classic – and for that matter as engaging.
