Springfield, Ohio – A female employee at an area restaurant on the 900 block of Beltline Road called police to report a counterfeit incident. Specifically, she stated that a customer had passed a phony $41 bill before leaving the establishment.

A Story From The Past “A man’s gotta make at least one bet a day, else he could be walking around lucky and never know it.” Jim Jones “You go out for a night of drinking and you don’t know where you’re going to end up the next day. It could work out good or it could be disastrous. It’s like the throw of the dice.” Jim Morrison “In gambling the many must lose in order that the few may win.” George Bernard Shaw “‘Gambling is a disease of barbarians superficially civilized.” Dean Inge “I love blackjack. But I’m not addicted to gambling. I’m addicted to sitting in a semi-circle.” Mitch Hedberg

The original Atlantic Hall was purchased in March of 1839 by two brothers from Philadelphia, Captain Benjamin McMakin and Captain Joseph McMakin, who also purchased land across Jackson Street with the intention of expanding their business. In 1842, the McMakin brothers had the New Atlantic built on that parcel of land, increasing their lodging capacity by 300 beds. Their new hotel spanned 100 feet along what would later become Beach Drive and rose four stories tall. Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

AstragOloi – Also known as “knucklebones,” astragoloi is an ancient game of chance, played with sheep bones known as astragolus. The origin of astragoloi is connected with dice, of which it is probably a primitive form. The bones were tossed in the air, with the winner being the first player to complete a prescribed series of throws.

Random Fact Of The Week

The designer of the first deck of playing cards wished to represent specific cultures with world influence before and during the 15th century. Subsequently, spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts represented the Middle East, Greece, the Roman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, respectively.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “You are original and creative.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Ramblings From The Editors

W

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

e received a disturbing letter from a loyal reader named John. A couple of months ago, he went on a secret shopping mission throughout Cape May, taking note of how he was treated in restaurants, stores and bars. We’re thrilled to report that all eight eateries he visited proved courteous, as did Ellie’s Bakery, Collier’s, Good Scents, and, ahem, the Exit Zero store. As for the businesses John visited whose staffers couldn’t be bothered to say thank you (we won’t list you), we get it... working with the public can be tough. But we’re of the mindset that rudeness breeds more rudeness. In his letter, John asks if the custom of thanking people has “gone out of style.” We think (hope) not, and now, we’d like to prove it. We’re extending a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of our loyal readers, and we hope you (business proprietors, customers, tourists, locals) take today to pay that forward. A little gratitude goes a long way. Speaking of gratitude, we’d like to thank all the servicemen and women we celebrated this past Veterans Day. One, in particular, has left Cape Mayniacs beaming with pride, and rightfully so. His name is Mike Linnington, and you may have seen his picture on FOX news, standing next to President Obama during the Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Uknowns. Mike, a Cape May native who is one of six brothers, is now a Senior Commander in charge of five military bases, and he’s the head of — ready for this? — Joint Force Headquarters National Capital Region and The US Army Military District of Washington. In laymen’s terms, “if it moves and it’s in uniform, Mike’s respon-

ballet dancers who thrilled the crowd with their amazing body contortions. We spoke with Jennifer Hubbs, Executive Assistant to the General Manager at Congress Hall, who told us, “Cape Resorts Group is so excited to be a part of the West Cape May parade fundraising efforts. We’ll continue the tradition of helping with this cause, because we believe the parade is just great for the town and great for local businesses.” Primo Hoagies deserve special recognition for their efforts to support the parade. Every Monday and Tuesday from now until the big day, they’ll be donating one dollar for every sandwich they sell. Owner Ricky Nickels says he’s proud to help. “This world is never going to get better unless we all do our part to help. If the little Christmas parades go, what’s next?” he says. “This is my town, these are my people, and I’m happy to do this.” WHere can you take a carload of people for a fun-filled fall afternoon for a measly five bucks? Omnipresent EZ staffers attended the 2nd Annual Hidden Valley Harvest Festival this past weekend, and what a lovely event it was. A $5 donation per carload is all that was requested, and you can’t beat that sticker price to hang out on the charming Hidden Valley grounds, enjoying live music, camaraderie with your neighbors, and the satisfaction of helping a worthy local organization. We brought a little extra money for pony rides, moon bounces, and some killer food from the likes of local vendors like JB’s Barbecue and Empanada Mamas. A good time was had by all, from what we could see, and it makes us happy to think of those dollars helping the rescue horses stay warm, dry and fed for the winter.

sible for it.” These are the words of Mike’s younger brother Jim, owner of the Bayshore Inn and Buttonwood Manor. “To me,” he says, “my brother is larger than life.” While he “lives for the guys,” the military personnel Mike protects, Jim says that his brother misses Cape May. “He loves the support this town has given him over the course of his 30-year career, and he loves coming home.” As we mentioned here last week, the West Cape May Christmas Parade costs approximately $30,000 per year to produce. You don’t need us to tell that’s a serious chunk of change, which is why it tickles us to report that our little jar on the counter at EZ Global Headquarters had, at press time, collected more than $50. It’s a start — small steps. We’d like to give a special shout-out to those generous readers who visited the store for no other reason than to pop a dollar in the kitty. So keep it coming and thank you, one and all. Our humble offering pales in comparison, however, to the $7,000 or so collected by Congress Hall’s fundraiser held last Thursday evening. A couple of EZ staffers dropped by, and were blown away by the little

The Truth Behind The Weightman Cottage Split

A

Exit Zero’s Historical Editor disproves an architectural myth...by Ben Miller

NYONE who has enjoyed a tour of the historic district has heard the myth about the Angel of the Sea. The story goes that the two cottages were originally one building, sitting on the corner of Washington and Franklin, the site of the present post office. William Weightman, it was believed, decided he would like an ocean breeze and hired some local farmers, in 1881, to move the cottage to the property on the corner of Beach Avenue and Ocean Street. The farmers were ill-equipped to move the large cottage, so they split it in half and moved each half on logs, with the segments pulled by horses. The myth proposes that the farmers took the entire off-season to move it and were unable to put the two pieces back together once they got to the new lot, so they simply boarded up both sides of the house and went back to their fields. In the process, the Weightman Cottage became the Weightman Cottages, later renamed the Angel of the Sea. A couple things about that story never felt right to me. First, the home was said to have been moved by William Weightman, Jr. Even the official profile of the house in the National Archives refers to this as the William Weightman, Jr House. But the truth is, he never inherited it from his father because he died before him; the map writer made a mistake, likely derived from the fact that William Sr’s father had the same name. Secondly, in 1881, Weightman Sr was one of the richest men in the country. A shrewd businessman who made a fortune in real estate, he is remembered most as the man who brought the anti-malaria drug quinine to the United States. Weightman had the means to hire people who could get the job done. Also, by this point, moving homes was nothing new, and the complications the farmers encountered would have been expected. Finally, it takes a large leap of faith to believe that a team of experienced people would devote six to eight months to moving a house five blocks... and still manage to do it wrong. It was a suspicion I’d had for years, but could never prove until now. Recently, I happened to be looking at a picture of the Weightman Cottages circa 1890

This is a picture of the Weightman Cottage in one piece at the corner of Beach Avenue and Ocean Street. The building next to it is the Morning Star Villa and the building next to that is the Colonial Hotel, now known as the Inn of Cape May. (above) that was forwarded to me by Ann Weightman. It’s likely that this woman is a relation of William Weightman (the genealogy wasn’t complete). Something struck me as odd and I examined the photo. I realized that the buildings in the background are the Morning Star Inn and the Colonial Hotel, meaning this picture was taken after the cottage was moved, and yet it’s in one piece. This prompted me to look at an 1886 map of Cape May that depicts not only the city lots, but also the shape of the buildings on these lots. Sure enough, the Weightman Cottage is shown intact. The coup de grace was a picture from my personal collection, circa 1910, that was published in Exit Zero a few weeks ago, and which is shown on the opposite page. It shows the Weightman Cottage on the right, the Morning Star behind it, and the empty lot next to it where one section of the cottage would later be moved. Subsequent owners added to and repositioned the cottages on the lot. The right side of the Lafayette Hotel is also still visible, proving that the cottage had not yet undergone any splitting or repositioning. I researched further and learned that the owners of the Lafayette Hotel eventually purchased the cottages from Anne Weightman, William Sr’s daughter, who inherited them. Anne faced an exhausting legal struggle over her inheritance and although she did win the litigation in the end, she elected to sell off many of the Weightman family properties, includ-

ing the Cape May cottage. The house was eventually split and, in 1963, slated for demolition, at which point the Reverend Carl McIntire intervened; he purchased the homes and had them moved to their current site on the corner of Trenton and New Jersey. The chimney visible on the Weightman Cottage in the aforementioned picture is the final piece of the puzzle. Notice how, in the photo, the chimney is in the middle of the house, then compare this with the building – the one on the left, if you’re facing Trenton – as it exists today. The entire front, from the tower forward, is an addition, built to match the rest of the building. In the cottage on the right, everything beyond where the third f loor ends is a new addition. The picture was taken in 1910, proving the cottage was split at least five years after they were sold by Anne. I placed a phone call to the Angel of the Sea and spoke with Chet Sherel, who’s been at the Angel for 10 years. He confirmed that the myth is simply implausible. The buildings have no f lat sides, like they would have had they been boarded up, as the myth proclaims. Chet, understandably coy, said that he has never publicized his suspicions, but that I am free to do with it what I will. Any publicity is good publicity, after all. We can finally put to rest the erroneous stories about farmers moving the building in pieces and failing to complete the job. These poor farmers have been the butt of the joke for far too long.

This picture, from Ben Miller’s personal collection, was taken from Beach Avenue, standing directly in front of what is now the curved motel addition. At the time the picture was taken, the Weightman Cottage was in one piece and can be seen on the right of the picture, while a column from the Hotel Lafayette is visible on the left. 11/1: A Night With Sole At Lucky Bones

«

Gene “Sole Man” Sole, loving husband and father of two, passed away on August 11 after a three-year battle with cancer. Gene served as a soccer coach and teacher in the Lower Township district, the viceprincipal of Lower Cape May Regional High School, and, most recently, principal of the Richard M. Teitleman Middle School. He was also leader of Cub Scout Troop 73, a veteran of the US Marines who served two tours in Iraq, and a volunteer in the Cape May City Fire Company. Because he did so much for his community, a scholarship fund has been established in Gene’s name, so that his legacy might live on. On November 1, nearly 400 people gathered at Lucky Bones restaurant for “A Night with Sole,” an event benefitting the fund. Gene’s band, a bluesey jazz group called Old School, provided the entertainment. Here, Gene’s widow Betsy is pictured with some of the attendees. The Movie Column

t

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, previews upcoming films for the holidays

he holidays are upon us. It’s the season for spending lots of time with friends and family — oh who are we kidding? We don’t want to actually talk to all those people! Hey, I have an idea. Instead of staring at each other over a half-eaten mince meat pie, let’s go see a movie instead! Isn’t this why the studios get so busy preparing the end of the year cornucopia of movies? No matter the reason, this year has plenty of options. Let’s look at some of the 2011 holiday season offerings. But first, let’s look at the films we will not be reviewing in this article – for example Twilight or Happy Feet 2. Face it, you’re either rushing to see these two or cringing at the thought they might be showing at the same theater complex as films you really want to see. And let’s truly skip Jack & Jill, Adam Sandler’s new movie that is getting frightfully low marks. Hugo: Martin Scorsese directs his first 3D film (you heard that correctly). The scene is 1930s Paris, and an orphan living in a train station uncovers a finely crafted automaton

Hugo is Martin Scorsese’s first 3D film that he is convinced contains a message from his father. In theaters at Thanksgiving, this film is receiving preliminary praise, and it certainly looks to be one of the director’s more colorfully conceived features. The Muppets: I could have lumped this one with Happy Feet Two, but come on… it’s the Muppets! Animal is one of my favorites!

A Dangerous Method: The latest film from David Cronenberg. The director who gave us A History of Violence (2005) and The Fly (1986) returns with a film about the birth of psychoanalysis in one of the early accounts of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. This film stars Viggo Mortensen (a personal favorite) and Keira Knightley (an actress trying desperately to leave Pirates behind). The Descendents: George Clooney in his second film in 2011 (his first was Ides of March, see last week’s review). The film is directed by Alexander Payne, who won an Oscar for his adaptation of Sideways in 2004. Like his Oscar winner, this film is also taken from a novel: Clooney plays a father trying to re-connect with his daughters after his wife’s boating accident. There are more: Arthur Christmas, about how Santa delivers all those toys in one night, another Chipmunks feature (as if two weren’t enough), and a new Mission Impossible feature with Tom Cruise (as if three weren’t enough). Tell us what movies you’ve seen this holiday. Just email us at capemayfilm@ hotmail.com.

10/23: Benefit For Patty Behrens At The Bayshore Inn

«

Patty Behrens — bartender, mother, and local legend — has been slinging drinks at Lucky Bones since the restaurant opened six years ago (and at the Pelican Club before that). She’s got a loyal following of customers who love not only her locally famous Cosmo, but her personality. Order a drink, and you’re bound to get a couple of laughs to go with it. Anyone who’s ever seen Patty “cry” at the bar knows what we’re talking about. Even Crohn’s Disease hasn’t kept Patty from cheering up those around her, though it has made it difficult for her to do her job. To show their support, friends and family put together a benefit at the Bayshore Inn. Nearly 400 tickets were sold. Here, our photographer captures Patty, second from the left, smiling with friends Donna, Marybeth, Shannon and Lisa.

Customer Service

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

I

KNOW a girl who has made some of the dumbest decisions of her life while drunk. She’s kissed some of the gnarliest men. She’s wasted beautiful Cape May mornings hunched over the toilet. Once, after six shots of Jack Daniels, she lost her credit cards, her driver’s license, and her dignity. She’s decided a pleather skirt is an acceptable wardrobe choice. She’s fallen off of a bar, been carried home, and drunk-dialed the ex she swore she’d never speak to again. She’s... oh hell, she’s me. I’m the girl who’s got a heap of reasons not to drink, a heap of experiences that would keep anyone in her right mind from ever imbibing again. And yet, put a glass of Chardonnay in front of me, and I won’t turn it down. It’s not lack of will power. It’s not that I’m an alcoholic. It’s that I work in a restaurant, and when you work in a restaurant, you drink. Alcohol is a part of the restaurant culture. When you’re a waitress, you serve it. You describe it. You inventory it. And, after a particularly lousy shift, you throw it back like water. You can’t simply go home to

bed; you’re too wired. You’ve been sweating in the 120-degree heat of a commercial kitchen. You’ve been sweating in the face of disgruntled guests. You’re past the point of exhaustion; you’re at the deliriously over-tired stage where sleep becomes an impossibility. But you need to decompress somehow, and the restaurant’s bartender is willing to slip you a cocktail if you snag him some leftover calamari and stroke his ego by telling him how cute he looks in his bowtie. Or, you fork over cash for your drinks. When a lovely customer leaves me a decent tip, I feel compelled to spend it on something worthwhile. But when a jerk customer

leaves me a 13% tip (or 76 cents and a “What Would Jesus Do?” booklet), I feel compelled to spend it on something frivolous, like a Manhattan at the Brown Room. I don’t want your money if you’re going to be nasty; I want it gone as quickly as possible. Drinks for everyone. But spending the money of horrible guests on getting sloshed isn’t always validating. Waitressing requires a thick skin and, sometimes, all that alcohol turns a girl into a thin-skinned crybaby. The last time a customer called me incompetent, I came down with a bad case of the beer tears and spent the evening crying over a bowl of pasta fagioli on the kitchen floor. I know what you’re thinking; maybe instead of approaching my tables with “My name is Molly and I’ll be taking care of you,” I should be saying, “My name is Molly and I have a problem.” But I don’t think that this problem is booze, dear readers; it’s all the customers who’ve driven me to drink. And what would Jesus do when faced with such a problem? My guess is that he’d probably have another glass of wine.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Recently I texted a sexy photo of myself to my boyfriend. The problem is, he was at his mom’s at the time, and she saw it when it appeared on the screen. His mom hasn’t said anything to me about it, and has been fine with me, but I feel so awkward around her now! How do I get past this? – Sexy Sadie Dear Sadie Whew. For a moment there, the Answer Lady thought you were going to say that your boyfriend’s wife saw your photo, which would affect this response entirely. Let us begin by acknowledging that “sexy photos” are subjective. Your sexy may be someone else’s pornography – or vice-versa. We’ll assume that if your boyfriend’s mother still looks you in the eye and conducts civilized conversations with you that your photo did not offend her too deeply. Let us remember

that she also knows what sex is; sometimes it is difficult to think of people older than ourselves as sexual beings. It’s highly likely that your boyfriend’s mother has done everything you have done and possibly more – you just don’t see her in that context. (And the Answer Lady is absolutely not suggesting that you start looking at her in that context, either.) Have a nice photo of yourself and/or your boyfriend taken – or order one if you happen to make the pages of Exit Zero – frame it and present it to your boyfriend’s mother

for Christmas. Perhaps it will go a long way towards replacing the current image that is no doubt burned into her brain. PS: Here is our obligatory reminder to think before we text. Dear Answer Lady I went to a Halloween party but I was the only person who attended without a costume (I don’t do costumes). Anyway, I met a great girl who was dressed as a sexy vampire, but she stayed in character for the whole party and I don’t know her real name ! I want to see her again – where do I go from here? – Bitten Dear Bitten Perhaps this is your karmic punishment for attending a costume party without a costume, sir. The Answer Lady suggests that you begin with your host or hostess, and surely you have other acquaintances in common as well. Start asking some of the other attendees to see if they can assist you in identifying your mystery woman. And the Answer Lady also suggests that the next time you receive an invitation to a costume party that you wear a costume. You may then have women inquiring of their friends who that mystery man was.

Chance Meetings

A

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

LThough I clearly have no success with my own relationships, I have Oprahlike skills when it comes to giving advice about other people’s. There’s no good explanation, other than I’m a very observant person, so it’s easy for me to analyze what’s going on between two people. And I’m a bit of a loudmouth, so it’s easy for me to tell them exactly what they’re doing wrong. These skills run in my family – the folks who keep finding new ways to put the fun in dysfunctional – and they often create havoc at Thanksgiving. For example, there was the year when, in between the turkey and the pie, my great aunt told my older sister that she had plenty of time to lose 30 pounds so she could fit into a bridesmaid dress for my little sister’s wedding. Jaws dropped, tempers flared, and most interfamily conversation ceased for the next eight months. My own crowning moment came a few years earlier, when the aforementioned little sister brought home her boyfriend

for Thanksgiving. My family loved this guy. Handsome, well dressed, nice haircut, good manners, and treated my sister right. Drove a convertible Mercedes. He was an architecture student, and had just bought a house that he planned to restore. In short, all of the Chances thought he was The One. Except the older brother. Nope, I got one of those older brother vibes. Something wasn’t right with him. And being a loudmouthed relationship fixer, I pulled

my sister aside after dinner and told her that there was a problem. Her reaction was predictable. “You’re an a-hole! You never like any of my boyfriends, and you’re a jerk, and I never want to speak to you again....” Imagine my lack of surprise when my phone rang just before Christmas. “He was (sob)cheating on me with (sniffle) my roommate AND (sob, sob)my best friend...” I’ve never felt so justified in saying, “I told you so!” A month later my phone rang again. “I met Joe at a party and I just knew. We’re getting married.” “No!” I cried. “Sleep with him a few times first. Take him for a test drive!” Nearly two decades later, they’re still married. And like a good big brother, I’m still doling out the relationship advice. Let’s analyze our burgeoning relationship over dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, and we’ll have dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. Perhaps you’ve got some advice for me on just what it is women are looking for.

Senior Gabrielle Adams is not only a goalie, she’s a vocal leader whose passion for soccer is clear when she speaks about it. The daughter of Denise and Dan Adams and older sister of LCMR singer and actress Kyra, Adams began playing soccer in kindergarten and never looked back, and is one of the reasons the LCMR girls’ soccer team qualified for the state championship. Being given this opportunity comes with a lot of pressure, but Adams enjoys it. “I think I enjoy pressure. I thrive on it,” said Adams. Before each game, Adams visualizes the match in her head to prepare for what lies ahead. “I don’t talk on the bus ride to a game. I listen to my music and focus,” said Adams of her pre-game ritual. Adams not only plays for the Lady Tigers, she participates in a club team outside school to prepare for pursuing soccer in college. She’s been recruited by Dartmouth College and Rollins College, and her dream is to play for the women’s national team. No matter what her future holds, Adams has passion for soccer. As she says, “I just love being part of something bigger than myself.” story by Alyssa Spatacco, Photo by Jason Hoban

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

adore a wager. Why, I remember winning the whole of Cape May from those Lenape Indian fellows on the turn of a card. Had I lost, they would have had the coat off my back and the shoes off my feet. Literally: I always was a natty dresser, and my red and gold frock coat with the braiding looked just splendid, and my knee-high boots had matching gold buttons and spurs that jingled “Amazing Grace” as I walked (those Lenapes never could resist Fancy, to their eventual tragedy). Well worth risking one’s ancestral lands for, no? As it happened, I won the card turn, in no small part because we omitted to tell the Indians what the game was, and so when they picked an ace of hearts and I picked a two of clubs, I cheered and acted as if I had won, which technically speaking I had. Out of the kindness of my heart, though, I handed over my jacket, and took the time to explain the washing and drying instructions. So having launched this fine city on the proceeds of gambling, I continued the tradition, and Cape May hosted the world’s

first-ever professional gamblers’ contest. The smartest, cunningest, most evil gamblers streamed in from all corners, saddlebags stuffed with banknotes, gold and land deeds, clothes stuffed with tiny pistols, concealed daggers and vials of poison. The game of choice then was cribbage, which I admit lacked a little something in terms of the dangerous glamor of the later poker, but did have its own charms. Not least of those was that I am expert, and that first year I added a large fortune to Cape May’s coffers

(and a nice little nest egg for myself), and only had cause to shoot/knife/strangle 23 men and women in the process. In fact, it all went so well that we made it an annual event. We erected Cape May’s fine buildings on the winnings, and we grew fat. We were so taken by gambling that we not only made it legal, but we also made it ILLEGAL to NOT gamble within the city limits. We had Gambling Aides stationed at each and every street corner, ready to enforce the law and oblige visitors to take part in a quick wager, ranging from “what color the next charabanc to pass will be” to a fast and always fun game of Russian Roulette. In the end, of course, we had too much of a good thing, and people grew quite weary of stepping out the house in the morning to fetch a pint of milk, only to return minus dressing gown, plus various flesh wounds and with either a fortune in crumpled notes or the knowledge that they had no house to return to. We then revoked the gambling laws, and life is now safer, boringer and less exciting.

ive yourself an early Christmas present. Go see Christmas Presents from the Past at the East Lynne Theater Company. Named for a popular play from 1863, the East Lynne Theater Company “celebrates the American spirit on stage.” This professional company specializes in American theater from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stage plays, radio plays and stories told in a simple, unadorned manner bring audiences back in time. As they entertain, the company also educates, bringing theater history and techniques to audiences in Cape May and on the road. They venture into schools, bringing theater to students who discover their own talents as they learn history. In addition, the Company produces the “Tales of the Victorians” series each summer, which features storytelling on porches around Cape May. If you enjoyed this series, you’ll love the Christmas presentation. Christmas Presents from the Past presents classic American stories by Louisa May Alcott, O. Henry and Mark Twain in storytelling fashion by artistic director Gayle

Stahlhuth. Stahlhuth has become a Christmas tradition in Cape May, mesmerizing audiences as she moves seamlessly from character to character. Dare I suggest going by yourself? Could there be anything more indulgent than sitting in semi-darkness, eyes closed, while someone tells you stories? If you want to treat yourself, consider ONE

ticket to Christmas Presents from the Past. You’ll feel like a little kid, staying up late with a talented bedtime reader. Of course, if you have well-behaved friends who will let you soak it all in, allow them to join you. Or, just meet them across the street at the Merion Inn for drinks afterward. The East Lynne Theater Company performs at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. The church has been the company’s “temporary” home for most of its 32 years, and is a perfect place to see the shows, with their characteristic simple sets and unobtrusive lighting and sound. The church is wheelchair accessible, and there is a parking lot next door. Christmas Presents from the Past runs November 25 and 26 and December 4, 9 and 10 at 8:30pm. Tickets are $25; $15 for students; kids 12 and under free. Packages are available with several restaurants and inns, and there are group rates if you decide to include friends and family. Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

MIMI is an older gal that needs a lot of love in her golden years. No creature should have to live out her days in a shelter, especially such an adorable domestic short hair. If you’re a kind soul in need of a friend, stop by. Mimi is a simple creature, a very low-key cat, and she loves to be pet. Adoption fee is $20.

«

SIAM is a two-year-old domestic medium hair who loves to be held; a true lap cat, he purrs right away. Siam was surrendered to the shelter recently because his owner wasn’t allowed to have pets. If you think you’re allowed to care for such a cutie, Siam would be happy to love you back. Adoption fee is $20.

«

SHIRLEY is a young gal with plenty of moxie. She’s playful, spunky and lots of fun to be around. She can be independent at times, so she would probably do best as the only pet. Shirley could be an exciting way to spice up your life. If you’d like to liven up your home, stop by the shelter and meet her. Adoption fee is $70.

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HE White-throated Sparrows are back. So what’s the big deal about more sparrows? Well, I’ll tell you what. In about a Cape May minute (roughly a month or two), it’s going to be dark and cold and maybe even snowing. The Northern Hemisphere is going to be an ugly place to be. Despair will reign. Holiday credit card bills will be due. But the White-throated Sparrow will be enlivening the landscape and chirping away. In an ugly world, be thankful for the cheerful little White-throated Sparrow. The birds breed in the northern forests. They winter, for the most part, south of Canada, across much of the United States. Yes. This includes Cape May. They are a bird of woodland edge. They are favorites at bird feeders. They come in f locks. They are big and burly (for sparrows) and mostly brown. So what sparrow isn’t brown? Well, the junco for one. It’s gray and white. And the cardinal for another. It’s red

(except for the females, which are brown). White-throated Sparrows have white throats and some of them have bright white throats.... Wait a minute, did he say that cardinals are sparrows? Yes, I did. And, yes, they are found in the same family: the Fringillidae. Just like the Eastern Towhee.

Eastern Towhees are sparrows too? Yep. Towhees too. But unlike Whitethroated Sparrows, Northern Cardinals and Eastern Towhees breed in Cape May. They are found here all year. White-throated Sparrows are winter residents. They leave in May and return in great numbers in November. They are here in numbers now. They’re back. So what? You asked that already. This is a big deal because Whitethroated Sparrows offer two gifts to humankind: they don’t mind living near the likes of us, and they are vocal – even in winter, when most birds are quiet. Every evening, White-throated Sparrows retire to hedges and woodland edges and start chipping to each other. High pitched, full-throttle chips. What are they saying? “Goodnight.” And in the morning, they all start merrily chipping again.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 89 What are they saying? What do you think? And, here’s the best part. On sunny days, the birds even sing. They throw back their heads and belt out a song which has been phonetically rendered, “Oh sweet Canada, Canada, Canada.” Or, if you aren’t a fan of anyone wearing a maple leaf, it can also sound like, “Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody.” It is loud, mellow, somewhat plaintive, and easy to recognize. For many people it is about the only bird song they recognize. Which is certainly something to be thankful for. So here’s to the White-throated Sparrow. Winter’s little touch of cheer. They’ll be gone by April. But so will winter. If you are not fortunate enough to have a bird feeder in your backyard, or even less fortunate and don’t have a backyard at all, but still want to see (and hear) Whitethroated Sparrows for yourself, just visit the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive, overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), and is

The White-throated Sparrow – one bright spot in what could otherwise be a dreary winter open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm through November. Once the calendar f lips to December, the center is closed on Tuesdays. While you’re there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars and pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and pro-

grams for the season – yes, we have walks throughout the year, even in November and December. Guests can also take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise (including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory), or just browse around. We invite you to sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away – but you won’t be able to see or hear White-throated Sparrows! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

I

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

MOVED into a new place recently, and I’m hearing all sorts of strange noises in the middle of the night, like someone is moving furniture above me. It’s not the wind. It’s not the dog. It’s not the pipes. All signs point to the paranormal. Only problem is that I don’t believe in ghosts. Or, at least, I never have before. But after the third time waking up to what sounds like a hockey match in the living room, I started questioning my lack of faith in spirits. The only reason I don’t believe in ghosts, I realized, is that I’ve never experienced one firsthand. But this isn’t a very good reason to write them off altogether. After all, there are lots of things I haven’t experienced first-hand — head-over-heels love, lasting romance, a happy marriage — and I refuse to believe that these don’t exist. Some things just require a leap of faith. The problem is the fine line that exists between having faith and being stupid, and we’re all terribly afraid of being stupid. Take my friend Amy for instance. A part-time Cape Mayniac, she spends most of her time in Philadelphia, making $90,000 a year working her dream

job as a physician’s assistant and living in her dream apartment. Unfortunately, her dream guy, the one she’s currently living with, is about to move to Montreal in pursuit of HIS dream life. So Amy has a choice to make; she’s straddling the line between faith and stupidity. Does she give up her apartment, her friends, and her career (there are no physician’s assistants in Montreal) to follow her man, keeping the faith that someday he will put a ring on her finger? Or, does she hold on

to everything she loves about her life, at the expense of what could be the love of her life? Some say it’s foolish to put all of your eggs in one (handsome, charming) basket. They say it’s pretty dim-witted to give up all you’ve worked toward for a man. After all, matters of the heart are unpredictable. Others say if you’re not going to take a leap of faith for love, what are you going to leap for? Even if the man you’re depending on ends up leaving you high and dry, at least you tried. At least you fought for love. At least you kept the faith. Following your heart can never be wrong, even if it ends up being a mistake. Though I’m afraid to sway Amy in any one direction — this seems like the kind of decision she has to make for herself — I’m inclined to side with the latter position. Sure, gambling on a man might be downright idiotic. Believing in ghosts will be, too, if I one day discover the noises I’m hearing are actually just my drunken roommates bumping into furniture, or some such thing. But here’s the irony: if you don’t ever take a chance on believing, there’s a good chance you’re going to end up pretty haunted anyway.

Sleeping Around

I

Zelda Zablonski tests the beds in Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Virginia Hotel.

AM an indecisive woman. Even the small stuff stumps me. Heels or flats? Skirt or dress? Eggs or pancakes? For someone like me, the Virginia Hotel, located a half block from the beach on beautiful Jackson Street, is a delightfully paralyzing place. It’s good to have options, and when you’re here, you’ve got choices coming out the wazoo…the derriere… the badonkadonk. (I’m no more decisive when it comes to choosing my words, gentle reader.) Around 7pm, I checked in to the island’s first boutique hotel, built in 1879, and headed straight for the horseshoe shaped bar. But what to have? A mocktail muddled with fresh apple and basil? An ice tea pureed with white peach? A classic prohibition-era cocktail? A Virginia original? A fall-inspired pumpkin-tini? And what about food? Something light from the small plates menu? A full meal? An old favorite? An inventive special? After much deliberation, and some help from the bow-tied bartender named Leo, I settled on a tarragon and tonic - made with tarragon from West Cape May’s Beach Plum Farm - and the artisanal cheese board appetizer. But here again, another decision: where to enjoy my meal? Outside, there’s the wisteria vine-laced porch. Inside, there’s the signature red bar area, where George Washington’s campaign pins hover above oversized ottomans and a grand piano. And then there’s the fireside lounge stocked with fine reading material (including this very periodical). But I decided on one of the glassed-in sun porches where cushy zebra print sofas make for a calming space. It’s also where I spotted Lucas, Executive Chef of The Ebbitt Room, the Virginia’s pioneering restaurant. I wanted to ask him about the tasty, nut-like things garnishing my cheese plate. (They’re called Marconas, he told me, and they’re the best nut-like garnish of all time; no indecision here.) Around midnight, I retired to 311, a rectangular-shaped room with four windows and fresh-off-the-Atlantic air. Guests are close to the sea here, but they won’t find any kitschy beach decor (you know the stuff – ceramic dolphins every shade of the pastel color spectrum, seashell-shaped pillows, flip-flop emblazoned towels.) Instead, understated 311 is decorated in all the best colors of the

Above: Vince Draganov, who will bring your breakfast tray to your room, the Virgina’s fireside lounge, or the hotel’s front porch, overlooking tree-lined Jackson Street. coral reef. The lamp shades are splashes of fire coral red. The couch and carpet are sea-weed brown. The Osborne and Little wallpaper, somewhere between sky blue and sea glass green, is printed with dandelions (the kind with the puffy tops you’re supposed to make a wish on). And the reflective surfaces of the Julian Chichester dresser and desk have been pressed with silver leaf foil using a 5,000 year-old technique and specks of real silver. It’s enough to make a girl feel posh and beachy at the same time. Then there’s the Sealy bed, which – I didn’t have trouble deciding - is my favorite part. I sprawled out on the Rivolta Carmigani, Egyptian cotton, shippedfrom-Italy comforter and flipped through the hotel’s book of available movies. There were thirteen pages of options, so naturally, I couldn’t decide. (How could a girl ever choose between Mr. Pitt and Mr. Depp?) But I wouldn’t have made it through an entire film awake, anyway; I was too comfortable. The next morning I woke to a treetop view. Slipping into the cotton robe

that had been laid out for me, I contemplated the pumpkin orange leaves just below me and, also, breakfast. I had to make another decision: where to eat my continental meal. I settled on the hotel’s front porch, where I could watch the sun burn off the 8am mist rolling in from the ocean. A smiley Bulgarian server named Vince delivered my tray to me there and, over a chocolate and banana scone, a doughy piece of rosemary toast, a bowl of berries, and a piping hot cup of tea, I nestled into a cherry red couch. I thought of nothing except the festive orange gourds on the porch (I lost count at thirty-two), the graceful curves of the Victorian cottages across the street, and the Japanese Ginkos lining Jackson. On the street, a man waiting for the Virginia’s complementary valet chatted on his cell phone about what a downer it was be to leaving the Virginia that morning. All in all, it was an experience altogether lovely…charming…splendid. No matter what word I eventually settle on, know this, dear reader: it was a decidedly satisfying stay.
