The EZ Guide To What’s Going On The who, what, when and where of Cape May’s social scene
Get your tickets to ride the Congress Hall Express during the hotel’s Winter Wonderland festivities Thursday, December 22 Cape May Stage Presents This Wonderful Life Get to know the inhabitants of Bedford Falls like never before in this one-man show. Larry Daggett delivers a virtuoso performance mimicking the entire cast of characters in this homage to the classic Frank Capra film. Bring some tissues for the big finale. Tickets are $35 general admission, show starts at 8pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. For details, call Cape May Stage at 609-884-1341. Friday, December 23 Ghosts Of Christmas Past Trolley Ride Traditionally, Christmas Eve was a time when families gathered ‘round to share spooky stories. This trolley tour keeps that spirit alive. Board the heated trolley and take in the lamplit streets of Cape May as a member of the East Lynne Theater Company regales you with a Victorian holiday ghost story. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children. Departs at 7:45pm. For details, call 609-884-5404.
Saturday, December 24 Winter Wonderland At Congress Hall There’s so much to do at Congress Hall when celebrating the holidays. Enjoy their Winter Wonderland, with plenty of entertainment for the whole family. There will be train rides on the CH Express, hot chocolate and holiday beverage bars, plenty of tasty treats, holiday shopping and photos with Santa and Blue the Pig. Throw on your coat and gloves and spend a festive evening on the Grand Lawn. For more details, call the Congress Hall front desk at 609-8848421. An Old-Fashioned Christmas Exhibit At The Carriage House Gallery We all have warm Christmas memories, but if you want to take a deeper look at the history of the holiday, explore this exhibit. The Carriage House becomes a Christmas wonderland, complete with a miniature Dickens village beneath a giant tree and a special mailbox for letters addressed to Santa. For admission costs and hours of operation, call 609-884-5404.
Sunday, December 25 Christmas You don’t need us to tell you what to do today, right? Stay home, spend time with your family, gorge yourself on candies, cookies and eggnog. Don’t worry about your diet – you can take care of that with your New Year’s resolution. Happy holidays from the Exit Zero team. Monday, December 26 Spirit Of Christmas Tour Enjoy a charming Victoiran holiday tale on an evening trolley ride through Cape May’s festive streets. Then visit the authentically decorated Emlen Physick Estate for a living history holiday presentation. The tour includes a visit to the Carriage House for holiday refreshments and the gallery exhibit “An Old-Fashioned Christmas: Holiday Traditions Through the Years.” Tours last about two hours, and cost $18 for adults and $13 for children. Departs at 7:15pm. For details, call the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts at 609-884-5404.

The Police Blotter
FLATHEAD VALLEY, Montana – An intoxicated Somers man called police to report that his angry wife literally had him “by the balls” for the second time that evening. He did not require medical assistance, and the two were separated for the night.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.” Garrison Keillor “A Christmas Carol is such a fool-proof story you can’t louse it up.” Leonard Maltin “A good conscience is a continual Christmas.” Ben Franklin “That’s the true spirit of Christmas; people being helped by people other than me.” Jerry Seinfeld “What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.” Phyllis Diller “God bless us, every one.” Tiny Tim
SINCE its creation in 1832, Washington Street has been Cape May’s main commercial district. Unlike the boutiques and gourmet restaurants that line the pedestrian walk today, it was populated with traditional businesses like a mechanic’s garage, beauty salon and furniture store, as well as other small-town staples like a bank, pharmacy and movie theater. In 1970, city leaders decided the Washington Street Mall would be the economic hub of their planned “Victorian Village.” Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
FLAPDRAGONS A popular Christmas Eve game from the 16th to 19th centuries, it was played by placing a dish in the center of a table. A handful of raisins was scattered on the plate, brandy or cognac poured on top and set afire. Players took turns plucking a raisin out of the burning liquid and eating it.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
Santa Claus is based on St Nikolas of Myra, the world’s most popular non-Biblical saint, who lived in the fourth century. Artists have portrayed him more than any other saint but Mary. He is the patron saint of banking, pawnbroking, piracy, butchery, sailing, orphans, royalty and New York City.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “A merry heart does good like a medicine.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with vegetable moo shoo. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
F
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
OR hospitality night, we ordered a cheese platter from Seaside Cheese and hot chocolate. The diet of most Exit Zero staffers has consisted primarily of the leftovers ever since, so we’re feeling a mite portly these days. But there’s comfort in knowing there are plenty of options around here for getting fit. There’s Cape Fitness, staffed with knowledgeable exercise buffs. There’s Balance Pilates and Yoga, for when you’ve lost your Zen. And there’s the exciting new North Beach Health Club of Cape May. The result of a merger between the North Beach Health Club (run by Mark Chamberlain and located for 12 years in North Cape May’s Bayshore Plaza) and The Cape May Health Club (run by Fabio Pawlus and located, since 2002, in North Cape May’s ACME plaza), the gym was launched at the ACME plaza location over Thanksgiving weekend. “We’d been competing for the same customers across the street from one another,” Fabio said. We think it’s pretty special that two rival businesses can come together like this, especially during economic times that often bring out the worst in people. But this wasn’t merely a financial decision. Fabio says with three partners steering this 12,000 squarefoot ship – himself, Mark and Mark’s longtime employee Gloria Monaghan – there will always be someone available to help with training. And this is, Fabio says, far more rewarding than “making a couple bucks.” The gym offers A LOT of classes, in addition to childcare, saunas, and a room just for working on the abs you’ve been hiding under layers of mozzarella. Somehow, Mark says, it’s not so big that it feels overwhelming. “The 16 years of community we developed over at
North Beach has carried over,” he said. We can vouch for this, as we made our way to the ACME plaza for a workout of our own. It’s a delightful place to get fit as is (though plans for a revamp are underway). The 15-foot ceilings give an airy feel (a good thing in a room full of folks breaking a sweat), and the lighting – special non-fluorescent tubing – makes it so you “never feel like you’re in a doctor’s office.” But it’s the energy of the place – something Fabio calls a “great buzz” – that’s most inviting. Gym-goers are “pleased and excited,” said Gloria. We asked long-time North Beach patron, Mike Vellei, how he feels about the change, and he confirmed “It’s awesome.” And, most importantly for those of us who’ve spent the fall eating cheese, “It’s not intimidating. The staff is so encouraging.” Turns out, it’s time to lay off the Army Corps of Engineers. For building jetties at the opening of the harbor and the canal, they often get blamed for the beach erosion. (Former mayor Mickey Blomkvest even demanded the US Army take responsibility for it, officially.) But 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison,
recorded the erosion in the 1890s, long before the Army Corps got involved. Our historical editor, Ben Miller, sent us a Philadelphia Inquirer article from 1891 entitled Eating Away At Cape May Point: The President and Family Watch the Ravages of the Waves. “The family and guests spent over one hour watching the long, big, cool waves roll upon the shore,” it reads. With each surge, the swells “took the sands out very rapidly.” Harrison was able to watch, according to the article, because “he was not so busy today” and he took “quite a rest in his [Cape May] office,” the place where he spent his time “between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon.” Harrison is one of at least 11 American presidents who enjoyed Cape May, many of them while in office, including Franklin Pierce, Ulysses S. Grant and Chester Arthur. But it was under the Harrison administration, in 1890, that Congress Hall was selected as the “summer White House,” just more confirmation that a Beach Avenue view is a presidential thing. But it wasn’t all bronzing and bathing for President Harrison: he declared both Idaho and Wyoming to be states of the Union during his time in Cape May, and he also passed The Sherman Antitrust Act, a groundbreaking measure still referenced in court cases today, which prevented businesses from developing monopolies. For those of you who haven’t yet reserved your seat at the 8th Annual Burn’s Supper at the Ugly Mug on January 26, shame on you. They’re selling like haggisstuffed hot cakes. This is a night of culture, good food and belly laughs with friends. Finally, from all of us at EZ, have a safe and merry holiday.

12/11: Benefit For Dwight Dunbracco At The Bolero
«
DWIGHT Dunbracco, thirty-one year-old resident of North Cape May, has been general manager of the Ugly Mug bar and restaurant on the Washington Street Mall for ten years. In September, he was diagnosed with diabetes. Because he had no health insurance at the time, friends and family organized a benefit at The Bolero bar in Wildwood to offset the costs of the medical bills. Over 200 people turned out in support of Dwight. He’s pictured here, fourth from the left, with friends Brandon, Stix, Tommy, Dennis, and Kinler.

The Movie Column
D
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Young Adult”
irector Jason Reitman offers the latest installment of what has the potential to be a stellar career with the film Young Adult. In this coming of middle-age darkish comedy, Mavis Gray, played wonderfully dour by Oscar winner Charlize Theron, has a bit of a mid-life crisis and returns to her small hometown in an attempt to reclaim her high school sweetheart (played by Patrick Wilson). Her trip is spurred by an email announcement of the old flame’s brand-new baby. Oh, and he’s happily married. During her visit to the town, she strikes up a friendship with an old schoolmate, played by Patton Oswalt, who is desperately trying to stop Mavis from getting in between her past boyfriend and his current wife. This film struck many chords with this middle-aged reviewer, but none of them ever became a melody. First, the film’s concept was flawed (you be the judge as to whether that flaw was fatal). The motivation of the lead character was not one to which you could relate very easily — unless perhaps
Charlize Theron hasn’t looked this haggard since Monster you’re delusional. The acting throughout was superb — especially Theron, who hasn’t been this blatantly unattractive since her film Monster, for which she won the Oscar. Another great performance was from Patton Oswalt, who you’ll remember as the quirky friend of Kevin James in the television series King of Queens.
So much of the dialogue in this film tried to do the thinking for me. I don’t like that. And much of the subtle story revelations were neither subtle nor revelations. I’d become a fan of Reitman with such great films as Up in the Air and Thank You for Smoking, as well as one of his greatest successes (although not such a favorite of mine), Juno. You can see that he takes his time (two years in between each release) to make these movies the best they can be. It’s just that this one misses the mark. Must See: If you’re a die-hard fan of Theron or Oswalt. Take a Look: For a betterthan-average drama. Skip It: If you’re flat-out demanding work from Reitman as good as Up in the Air. A note: the 2012 Golden Globe nominations were made recently. It’s good to see that films I predicted to win nominations are on the list (50/50, The Help, My Week with Marilyn), but I’m confused by their categories. My Week with Marilyn was neither a musical nor a comedy. I’ll stick with the Oscars. The Film Society’s Pre-Oscar Party will be at Mad Batter, 5:30pm on February 26. For more info email capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

Merry Deathmas
“Twas the Night,” chapter six of Terry O’Brien’s frighteningly good new short story
I
December 23rd, early evening had never known a more helpless feeling. I had never known such impotent rage. I had never wanted to hurt someone more than I did right now. But all I could do was stare into the flurries as the medical examiner’s hearse drove away. “He saved her,” Tim told me. “We have to remember that. He went out doing what he does.” “Somehow,” I replied, “that doesn’t make me feel any better.” As dusk gave way to night, the little parking lot at the Star Motel across from the mighty Congress Hall twinkled with lights. Not the Christmas kind, though; the red and blue kind, which generally meant bad news. Tim said, “We can’t lose focus. We’ve got to stay on top of this guy, keep turning the screws…” “I love you, Tim,” I said and cut him off. “You’ve had my back for three years now and I couldn’t ask for a better partner.” “Thanks,” Tim replied. I went on. “But right now I would deeply appreciate it if you would shut the hell up.” He opened his mouth to speak, stopped, looked down at the asphalt, then walked away. Of course he didn’t deserve it. But I was in a rotten mood, I had a killer to catch, and one of my few friends in this life was lying cold in the back of a Cadillac Krystal on his way to being sliced and diced, though the several crush and puncture wounds to the side of his head would seem to be the obvious cause of death. And I was not happy about it. The right-reverend Milo Binkley had also lost his life today as the Santa Killer made his way through the Cape May City Council with swift ferocity, the safety measure we’d put in place failing on all accounts. I made a little cross on my chest and made my way over to Janice Rappaport, who survived the attack by the deranged Santa by the grace of the now-deceased Officer Shawn Austin. She sipped a coffee, wrapped in a blanket. I wasn’t happy with her, either: her little sex tape games, buying everyone’s silence by surreptitiously recording her trysts, which occurred with shocking regularity, shocking at least to me, who was a co-star. She assured us all the there were plenty of people whom she had recorded whose careers would be destroyed should we press the issue, so we decided not to press.
I was in a rotten mood, I had a killer to catch, and one of my few friends was lying cold in the back of a Cadillac Krystal on his way to being sliced and diced. “How are you feeling?” I asked. I knew the answer, and it was really a stupid question, but I had to start somewhere. She looked at me with tied eyes. “Like a million bucks.” My anger melted away as I looked at her. The strong, confident woman, a “cougar” some might call her, that we’d encountered over the last three day was gone, replaced by this small, shaky thing wrapped in this blanket. I leaned against the car next to her. “Hell of a week, eh?” She nodded, leaned into me, and began sobbing. I threw an arm around her. A minute later, after she’d composed herself, I asked, “Did he say anything to you?” She’d gone over all of this with the cops already, but I figured I’d follow-up, see if anything else shook loose. “’Claus.’ Shawn said ‘Claus’ just before he…” “It’s okay,” I told her. “We know the killer was dressed as Santa Claus. We have some fleeting video, nothing we can make an ID from. What about the killer? What did he say to you?” She sat up tall and said, “’This is what you get for freezing me out, you bitch’.” I nodded. “Any idea what that means?”
She shook her head, “None.” As one-fifth, and currently all of the body that governed most of the daily goings-on of Cape May, the list of people unhappy with Janice was not short. The Washington Street Mall renovation from a few years back, a job as innocuous as changing the decaying patches of cement and cobblestone, had been delayed over a year by the public squabbling of a few vocal opponents. The fate of the decrepit Beach Theatre had also been the focal point of much public hand-wringing. Even the stupid goddamn little plastic lighthouses on the Cape May Bridge had earned much public scorn. And all of this did not even take into account the biggest boondoggle of them all; the new beachfront convention center. What had begun several years earlier as a routine inspection to get approved some basic changes to the building, had ended up with the structure being condemned as unsafe. Since then a half-dozen architect’s plans had been approved, only to be recalled when popular opinion turned against it. A two-year project was now inching up on five. It did not help that on the first day of construction it was announced that the project was already almost $200,000 over budget. But at least

Page 52 Merry Deathmas ? From Page 49 heaven and earth had finally moved enough to allow actual construction on the new building, which was, by all accounts, going to be a beauty. Local magazine Exit Zero, with whom I had a brief but spectacular history, kept tabs on it; publishing a photo a week of the building’s progress, and reminding the local populace of the good that would come with the city having a bona fide convention center, as opposed to a glorified roller rink. Yes, it appeared the new façade would disrupt the normal foot traffic patterns of the Beach Avenue promenade, but wouldn’t all the new tax and tourist income make up for the minor inconvenience? To many, the answer to that question was a resounding “no.” But hey, some people disagreed with the Emancipation Proclamation, too. So what could you do? And why was the convention center sticking in my head? “Tell me about the new convention center,” I said. “Don’t get me started,” Janice replied. I shrugged, “Just beating the bushes.” “It’s our own little version of Obamacare,” she said. “The people that love it really love it. The people that hate it, hate it just as much, but are much more vocal about it.” “How do you mean?” “Letters, emails, suspicious packages… the works.” “Why?” She sighed and wilted a little. “Despite all the negative feedback and obstruction, I think everyone know that once it’s done it’s going to prove a huge boon to the local economy. The competition to secure one of the indoor shops got quite heated.” “Go on.” “We, the council, tried our best to strike a balance between nurturing local businesses, but also including a few national chains that are a little more recession-proof. For instance, the 20-plus local frou-frou restaurants that applied for a lease were none too pleased that we went with a KFC/Taco Bell. The sincedefunct Atlantic Books vehemently protested our inclusion of a Walden Books. It’s a delicate balance to strike, but I think the fact that Atlantic Books is no longer shows we made at least one right decision.” I rubbed her shoulder. “I believe it was some intelligent Roman that said a society that governs by referendum will be a society for not much longer.” “Easier said than done.” I stood up. “Why don’t you send me all the
Thursday, December 22, 2011 emails, gather up all the letters and other stuff, lease applications, and we’ll take a look at them. Might be something, might be nothing.” She nodded. “Hang tight, we’ll get you an escort.” She said, “I’ll just need a minute at my office. My laptop’s up in the room, so…” We both hesitated, knowing full well what was on that laptop. She continued, “So I’ll just need to grab it. There’s… there’s a lot of stuff on there I need to delete.” “Thanks,” I said. “Thank you,” she replied. I walked away, two EMTs went to her with extra blankets and fresh coffee. “Anything?” Detective Ike Curtis asked me as I approached his group, which consisted of my partner, Tim DeMarco, and Officer Tony Genaro, who had also survived his encounter with the mad Santa. Curtis looked like a composite of every TV cop you’ve ever seen; a dash of Colombo, a smidge of Sipowicz, a sprinkling of Lenny Briscoe, finished with the warm demeanor of Joe Friday. “Nothing she didn’t tell you,” I answered. “She’s going to get me all of her convention hall
sen that exact moment to burst into the room, with the keys he’d taken from Shawn Austin, and slaughter the reverend. When Tony emerged from the bathroom he hesitated for the briefest of moments before drawing his weapon. It was the moment the killer needed to get the drop on him and whack him with the Yule log weapon he’d constructed. It was only the killer’s zeal to get to Mrs Rappaport that left him alive. “There’s no way I can keep you on duty,” Detective Curtis finished. Tony dropped the ice pack. “Then you’ll have to shoot me,” he said and made his way over to Janice. “That guy…” Curtis said as he lit a cigarette. “Wish I had ten more just like him.” “You can’t let him go,” Tim said. “He’s in no condition…” “I’m not an idiot, Boot Strap,” Curtis said, digging on Tim’s resemblance to the actor Orlando Bloom in the Pirate movies. “But how would you suggest I stop him?” Tim, properly chastised, said nothing. “Where you going to keep her?” I asked. Curtis answered, “916 Queen Street, a little cottage off the main road, perfect for hiding
Tony had been his partner for eight years. They’d spent more time with each other than their spouses. For eight years. And Shawn had bought it on Tony’s watch. files. Figure it’s a start. She’ll need an escort to her office, then to a new safe house.” “I’ll do it,” Tony said. “Bullshit,” Curtis said. “You need to get to the hospital.” “With all due respect, sir,” Tony said, “you can stuff it.” I had recently become friends with Shawn Austin; we’d caught a few ball games, thrown back a few beers, swapped a few war stories. But Tony had been his partner for eight years. Had each other’s back for eight years. They’d spent more time with each other than their spouses. For eight years. And Shawn had bought it on Tony’s watch. Whatever grief I was feeling was but a drop in the bucket compared to Tony’s. “Now look,” Detective Curtis said firmly, “I know you’re feeling it right now, but what happened wasn’t your fault. It was a goddamned fluke.” This was perfectly true; when the Santa killer struck, Tony had been busy securing Reverend Milo Binkley’s room. They had only been in seclusion for a few hours, so Tony was making sure the surveillance cameras and security bars in the bathroom were 100% to his liking. The killer had serendipitously cho-
someone.” I nodded. “My office.” “Think you and your gang can keep an eye on her for a few hours ‘til we get something else set up? We didn’t entertain the possibility that the first one might not be good enough.” “Not a problem,” I said. “Tim, call Lionel and Klaus, have them meet you there ASAP. Make sure the alarm is engaged. I’ll grab some provisions and hit the storage unit.” “What do you have in there?” Curtis asked. I looked him in the eye. “Firepower.” He nodded. “Make it happen. My men will meet you there in 30 minutes, after Mrs Rappaport gets her things squared away.” “Okay,” I said. “Sounds like a plan. I’ll need about an hour. Tim, set Janice up in the spare room. Bar the windows and doors. Nobody gets in without proper credentials, and even then I want you to call their staff sergeant, supervisor, mother, first cousin and six other people before you open the door.” “Got it,” Tim said and left. I took another minute to go over the plan with Curtis, Genaro, and the tw0 foot patrol-

916 Queen Street. The killer closed his cell phone. Things were happening quickly now. How could the cop have not been dead? He crushed the side of his head, left him in a pool of his own blood, bits of brain clung to his Yule log mallet. Yet somehow the cop had managed to put a bullet through his shoulder. He had to admire the dying man’s tenacity, but was furious at himself for botching the job. One more swing would have done it, He had gotten sloppy, arrogant, and it all fell apart. Unable to go to a hospital, the killer went to his own home to plug the hole in his right clavicle with gauze and super glue and duct tape. Lucky for him it was a through-and-through. Painful, to be sure, but pain could be managed with the various painkillers he’d acquired over the years to deal with his aches and pains. He also swallowed a handful of antibiotics to fight off the inevitable infection. If he could make it through the next few days, a week maybe, he could then concoct some story about a hunting accident and see a doctor. In another state. Or another country. He had the means. But he could do nothing about the panic that gripped him in the wake of his simple plan falling apart. He racked his brain, but could not see a way out that did not end in death or jail. Until his phone rang. When he answered it he divined clarity heretofore unknown. It all clicked together. But it was happening soon, and there was much to do. Grunting against the pain,
being careful to stay out of sight, he had made his way to the small cottage on Queen Street. Once or twice he thought he may have been spotted, but to the average person he would appear to be but a lonely Santa on his way to some holiday party or another. The blood from his wound about perfectly matched the crimson of his suit. The bullet hole would be indistinguishable from a distance of more than five feet. Outside the cottage he clipped the wire and attached the small device to the electricity meter, where it seemed perfectly normal among the other metal doo-dads. The back home, through the back of the shop and into his small apartment to strip off the costume and apply more glue and tape to the wound. The suit went into the roaring fireplace. The phone buzzed. A text message. “Here.” He quickly dressed in regular clothes, popped more pills. The phone buzzed again. “Quick pls.” He swallowed hard and texted back, “1 minute.” “K,” came the reply. He took a deep breath and steadied himself. Calm, he went into his bathroom and grabbed a handful of painkillers, then into the small kitchenette and grabbed the quart bottle of egg nog from the fridge and a sleeve of Entemann’s cookies from the pantry. He then exited back out through the shop, out into the night. The car was there, a black Honda Accord. He went to it and climbed inside. “Gentlemen, what has happened?” he asked. Tim replied, “Nothing good. We need to get to the office, I’ll fill you in when we get there.” “Understood,” the killer said. Lionel, driving, asked, “You need anything before we get there?” Klaus answered, “Nothing that can’t wait a few hours.” Next Week: The 12th Day of Christmas.

Customer Service
I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
HAVE hypochondriac tendencies. I wash my hands so often, my skin looks reptilian. I think my freckles are melanoma. I used to worry about being pregnant before I even started having sex. I knew it wasn’t possible…but still. But who can blame me? Have you Google searched a symptom recently? Never mind that you just bumped your funny bone against your bed table: pain in the elbow could be a sign of bursits. Never mind that you just woofed four chili dogs from Hot Dog Tommy’s: stomach cramps point to an exploded appendicitis or viral gastroenteritis or endometriosis…or all three. Tingle in your finger? You might have paresthesia. Itchy bellybutton? You’ve got sarcoptes scabiei. Big feet? Hello, sensorimotor neuropathy! And it’s not just the internet that’s the problem; it’s the television. I’ve seen commercials about something called “restless leg syndrome,” AKA nocturnal myoclonus, AKA the urge to move one’s legs. “Oh, God,” I thought the first time I saw the ad, having
just walked my own legs across the kitchen, “I’m diseased.” The point is, I’m a sucker for a rare ailment. The more outlandish the better. But there’s one disorder even I have trouble worrying about, and that’s saying something, considering I’m a prime candidate for it. It’s called SWSD, or Shift Work Sleep Disorder, and if affects, appropriately enough, shift workers. The symptoms include — ready for this? — being tired. And the treatment includes — ready for this? — limiting work hours. Now, I’m no medical professional, but I’m going to let out a big, fat guffaw in the face of anyone who thinks shift workers
shouldn’t be tired. It’s not a disorder; it’s just inevitable. But if we insist on labeling all waitresses, bartenders, nurses, etc. as having SWSD, then I’m fairly certain I’ve got several other sicknesses worth labeling, too. I frequently suffer from SOHC, or the Sick Of Hearing Complaints Disorder. The symptoms include an inablity to care about the mushiness of a French fry, immediate annoyance at the sight of all vegans and small children, and general apathy toward all people displeased with seating arrangements. The only treatment is change of occupation. I’ve also got TMMAWD, or the Too Many Manhattans After Work Disorder. Symptoms include headache, nausea, memory loss and intense feelings of embarrassment. But I don’t feel so bad about being so ill because my customers, well, you’re all sick, too. You suffer from TLOP, or Total Loss of Perspective Disorder, brought on by lack of parking and lack of surf and turf. Thankfully, none of these conditions are life-threatening. But I can always Google that, just to be sure.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. The theme: Christmas! The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. ACROSS 1. He played the starring role in It’s A Wonderful Life. 5. The Answer Lady Wise answers to perplexing questions
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I know that it’s the thought that counts, but what am I to do when my relatives clearly haven’t given a moment’s thought to the gifts they get me? One sister got me a mallpurchased, mass-produced tchotchke, the kind of thing she knows I hate. The other sister got me a gift card for e-books (she uses her Kindle constantly, but I don’t even have one!). I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but can I tactfully tell them their lack of thought is noticeable? – Really? Dear Really The Answer Lady believes your difficulty lies in the fact that you are looking for a “tactful” way to handle this. A person who purchases an e-book gift card for someone who doesn’t own a Kindle does not strike the Answer Lady as someone who would respond positively to “tact.” On the other hand, the
Answer Lady is kind of the queen of thoughtless gift-giving (and you don’t even want to SEE her gift-wrapping). Good gift-giving is an art form, and the Answer Lady admits that her talents, unfortunately, lie elsewhere. She relies heavily on gift cards, and she agrees wholeheartedly that this can come off as appearing lazy. But the Answer Lady justifies this by the fact that she is crazy busy, and more importantly, that she is missing the all-important “shopping gene” that so many members of her gender possess. Both of these
gifts sound like they can be re-gifted, and in fact, I’d give the e-book gift card right back to the giver, with a chuckle and maybe “Thanks anyway, but I think you meant to give this to someone who actually has a Kindle. You must have misplaced my Seaside Cheese/ Depot Market/Whale’s Tale gift card!” Dear Answer Lady My best friend borrowed my brandnew blouse to wear to her office party and returned it with a red wine stain on it. I managed to get the stain out, but then when I went to wear it, I discovered that it had been stretched out! I love my friend and don’t want to start a fight over this, but what should I do? – Swimming In My Clothes Dear Swimming The Answer Lady suggests that you take your not-so-brand-new blouse, put it in a gift box, wrap it up, and give it to your clueless friend for Christmas. Thoughtful! It is obviously of no use to you now, plus we already know that she likes it. Unless, of course, you are a big fan of resentment, and you want to see it displayed on a hanger in your closet every day.

I
f you haven’t finished your holiday shopping yet, well, you don’t need me to say anything, because every other media outlet is already calling you a procrastinator. Many guys get a bad rap for gift giving, but it’s never seemed that hard to me. You already know not to get a woman a kitchen appliance or vacuum cleaner, right? And that buying your girlfriend lingerie isn’t really a gift for her, yes? My friend Dave sets the bar too high, in my opinion. He spends the year racking up frequent flyer miles, then cashes them all in and takes his wife on a surprise trip every December. Venice, Egypt, Vienna, Machu Picchu, Easter Island, Istanbul... there’s no way for the rest of us to look good compared to him. But this year he decided to take his wife somewhere really romantic. The Taj freakin’ Mahal. Sorry, ladies, we’ve enjoyed some pleasant dinners together over the course of 2011, but I’m not taking any of you to the Taj Mahal anytime soon. Most of my holiday shopping list was taken care of with one short trip to
the West End Garage. For the ‘rents, who are enjoying gardening in retirement, an unusual garden ornament will make them smile and remind them of their bouncing baby boy whenever they see it. For my dog-owning best friend, facing the loss of her house in a divorce, a “Home Is Where The Dog Is” sign. A lovely wooden pepper mill for my sister, as a bit of an apology for the gift I’m getting her son (an African percussion instrument. My older sister
and I make a conscious effort to get our nephews obnoxiously noisy gifts that will drive our little sister up the wall. Nothing but love amongst the Chance siblings!). And finally, I found some notecards with a picture of the place where I work, which will do nicely for sending holiday greetings to our volunteers. You’ve still got a couple of days to make a good holiday impression. First, ignore every ad you see on television. You will rarely find a memorable gift idea in a 30-second commercial. Things that are not mass-produced — instead, think local and handmade — make better gifts. Find something that relates to the recipient, but make it unique enough that they will always remember who it came from. There are great gifts that fit that description up and down the mall. If all else fails, give her a day spa certificate, and then meet her for a nice dinner afterwards. But remember to keep it local; if you get her the Taj Mahal, she’ll probably just leave the tag on it and try to exchange it for something else next week anyway.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am afraid there has been a terrible Christmas mistake, dear friends. You see, according to the very same Mayan calendar that predicts the end of the world in 2012 (the original of which I have in my vaults, being studied by a team of Nobel Prize winners) also explains that due to a creeping inaccuracy of around a second a day since our calendars were invented, we have actually run out of several dates, the most notable of which is December 25. Also, September 3 and July 30. The good news is that people with birthdays then will actually not age any more, as one cannot, my scientists tell me, get older when one has no birthday. Anyways, the upshot is that it is not only illegal but impossible to receive gifts when there is no day on which Santa can visit. I kid you not. Actually I kid you, yes, as that Mayan calendar is utter nonsense: show me a prediction from a people who did not die out and I will show you a document that might be worth reading, I always say. So, japery aside, I am forced to reveal the actual terrible news about Cape May’s
Christmas. I feel awful. You see, there has been a mix-up in all of your presents this year. You all know that it is no less than myself who every Christmas night stealthily comes in whatever of your entrances is handiest and leaves you something from my bulging sack? Well, I have just realized that the huge pile of gifts I have imported from Harrods Of London still lies in the basement, but there is a similar-sized quantity of items from my Secret Archives missing. Kitchener, my faithful but doddering
manservant, had drank too deep from the cooking sherry and loaded the sleigh with some few thousand items that caught his blurry eye. This is terrible news for some of you (and indeed for me, as those treasures are the work of centuries of collecting/discovery/thieving) and good news for others. You see, among the items missing are gold ingots the exact size and shape of hamsters (good news), Ancient Ming Dynasty fortune cookies whose parchment predictions come true to the letter (variable news), a beautiful amphora full of carnivorous dung beetles (rather bad news), the head of Medusa (useful if you open the bag in the middle of a room full of unwelcome guests, and keep your own eyes closed) and Young Albert, who was sleeping under the sleigh and was caught up in Kitchener’s inebriated wrapping frenzy. I should stress that anyone unwrapping a tired and irritable Albert is in mortal danger, and so urge all of you (for this and for another thousand reasons) to unwrap all of your presents this year wearing stout gardening gloves and a gas mask.
MERRY CHRISTMAS For each $100 in gift cards or products you will receive a $20 Gift certificate good for products or services till June 15, 2012. Extra bonus gift for that special person or keep for yourself! Offer ends December 24, 2011 - Mention you saw us in Exit 0!

Activity Of The Week
H
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Holiday Chefs’ Dine-Around.
emingway wasn’t referring to food when he called Paris a moveable feast, but he knew the value of a great meal. As a broke young man in the City of Light, he would scrimp and save so he could treat himself to a fine French dinner. Clearly, Hemingway would appreciate the gourmet food available in Cape May, especially on December 29, during the Holiday Chefs’ Dine-Around. Nutritionists speak of the “French Paradox” – the relatively low rates of cardiovascular disease the French enjoy despite a diet rich in cream and butter. Their hearts and arteries look good on the inside, and the French look good on the outside – only about 10% of them are obese, in contrast to almost 30% of Americans. Portion control has something to do with it, as does a tendency to walk or bike instead of drive. And the cigarettes probably keep their appetites down – their lungs don’t look as good as their hearts. But food experts believe there is more to it. The French also eat “real” food, and they know how enjoy it, so they leave the dining
table satisfied and are less likely to snack. You’ll be unlikely to snack after the Chefs’ Dine-Around, presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts. The Dine-Around allows a limited number of diners to sample five Cape May restaurants in one meal. Each course is served in a different restaurant, linked by trolley shuttle service. The appropriate wine
will be served with each course, and a wine expert will explain each pairing. Make your reservations early – the Dine-Around is limited to 34 people. Socializing as you dine, and taking breaks between courses, are part of the French Paradox, too. The French linger over fine food and wine, enjoying the company. You’ll enjoy the chance to socialize with fellow diners as you move from restaurant to restaurant on the heated trolley, taking in the holiday lights as you go. Maybe you’ll change your New Year’s resolution from “eating less” to “eating better.” And, if you end up taking in too many calories, you can make up for it by taking a brisk walk on the beach the next morning, or dancing the night away on New Year’s Eve. A moving diner can compensate for the moveable feast. This year’s Holiday Chefs’ Dine-Around will be held Thursday, December 29 at 6pm. Tickets are $125. For more information on this event, call MAC at 609-884-5404 or 800275-4278. Join Cape May’s moveable feast with the Holiday Chefs’ Dine-Around. Next week: New Year’s Eve

Senior Brian Davies of Cape May made a splash at LCMR’s first swim meet this season. Davies wowed both of his parents, Stacey and Tom, along with many others, while recording a time of 24.5 seconds and first place in the 50-yard freestyle, earning him a slot in the state sectional tournament. Davies was persuaded to join the swim by Coach Zukawski during his junior year because of his height. He says he did not anticipate the enjoyment that would come from being a part of the team. “I really love it. I think it’s very exciting,” said Davies of the sport. Davies hopes to qualify for Cape Atlantic League time by the end of the season, which is only .7 seconds from his fastest time. Outside of the swimming pool, Davies is an integral member of the Boy Scouts and is very close to becoming an Eagle Scout. As for college, he is looking into attending Seton Hall or Rutgers and has plans to major in either engineering or computer programming. And of course, there’s a good chance he might even join the club swim team if his chosen school offers one. story and photo by Amanda vassar

TIKI is a one-year-old boy who’s been dealt a tough hand. Aside from not being reclaimed by his owner, he came to us covered with bite wounds which have since healed. It’s thought that he may have been used as bait! Still, Tiki’s sweet. While he is nervous, he is submissive and wants so much to please. He’ll do best as an only pet and with kids over 10. Come meet him; you’ll fall in love. The adoption fee is only $95.
«
BUCKY is a two-year-old, 67-pound Pit Bull who was found wandering the streets. Sadly, no one has come to claim him. When Bucky first meets people, he’s shy, but he will bond in good time. He needs some training, but he’s eager to learn and, while he doesn’t enjoy cats and he’s a bit too exuberant for children, he’ll do fine with other dogs. If you bring him home, Bucky will love to love you! The adoption fee is only $95.
«
PIXIE is a Beagle/Pit Bull mix who can be a little shy at first. Once she opens up, she is a sweet, personable young gal. Plus she does well with cats, larger dogs, and kids. While an active family would be great for her, she is going to need a little time to adjust. All that’s missing in Pixie’s life is a home to call her own and someone who will give her the love she deserves. Come and meet her today. Adoption fee is $95.

What audiences are saying about This Wonderful Life: “What a show! We were blown away by the actor’s talent and versatility. By the end of the show, I felt I had seen a whole stage full of actors... We really appreciated the script keeping true to the show we all know and love...” has taken the old theatrical version of it and given it new life. Come see a Broadway actor tell this story on a wonderful set complete with snow and neon signs. Watch Larry Daggett play all of the roles (and, at one point, the piano). A recent patron said, “Congratulations are in order to both the Cape May Stage and the outstanding actor, Larry Daggett, for one of the best performances we have seen to date anywhere. Now that is what we call ACTING! Thanks for such a wholesome, timely, and professional effort by all involved.” It’s a tour-de-force performance that you won’t want to miss. Bird Droppings
T
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
he other day I got a call from a person who wanted to know, “Where do all the birds go in the winter?” A little overwhelmed, I asked her if she could narrow down the field. “Can I what?” she countered. “Can you be a bit more specific? There are a lot of birds and they do different things.” “Well,” she huffed, “if you don’t know the answer why not just say so and be done with it. I don’t want this double-talk mumbo jumbo. I just want to know where all the birds go in the winter.” Okay, now. “They hibernate under the mud,” I told her. Except for the ones that fly to the dark side of the moon.” “Thanks,” she said. “I knew they had to be somewhere because they sure aren’t in my yard.” Presumably the caller’s yard wasn’t on the moon. At least, not the dark side. Why relate this discussion at all? Because while the caller evidenced a disap-
pointing dearth of patience, she did show an elevated element of discernment. She’d noted that there were fewer birds about than there used to be. She deduced that this must have something to do with the season. She was about half right. The full truth is that there are lots and lots and lots of birds around. They just aren’t in her yard where she was used to

seeing them during the warmer months. If she wants to see birds, in Cape May, in winter, she has two choices. 1. Go where the birds are. 2. Bring something into your yard that will entice birds to visit. Let’s start with going to where the birds are. Right now, in Cape May, you will find more American Robins than you will find in summer. Millions of robins. Feasting on holly berries; roosting in cedar stands. You can find ducks, too. Thousands. Ducks of every stripe and hue. There is a whole bird hatchery (called the Arctic) that had the whole of last summer to crank out ducks. In winter, the Arctic is not a hospitable place for birds that like unfrozen water. So they fly south to someplace where water remains in its liquid state. One of those places is Cape May. So if you love ducks, you’ll love Cape May in winter. Now the other side of the equation. Getting birds to come to you. Just south

Bird Droppings ? From Page 97 of the tundra there is another big bird hatchery. It’s called the boreal forest. It is this great big woodlot that stretches from Alaska to New Brunswick. It too, had a whole summer to crank out a crop of birds and many of these birds think that Cape May is a great place to spend the winter, too. They like open water, too. A bird bath with a heating element in it is a great attractive mechanism. But more than this, what these winter birds want and need is food. Many are seed eaters. If you put out seed, seed-eating birds will respond by showing up in your yard. Providing your yard is not on the dark side of the moon. Yep. Seed. Sunf lower seed. Millet. Thistle. Different seed for different bird species. The more variety, the greater the number and diversity of birds you’ll attract. There are lots of books on the subject of bird feeding. There is even one book dedicated to bird finding. But if you want to watch, not read, then I suggest you stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory shop and ask about bird feeding dos and don’ts from one of the experts on staff. Or you can just watch the birds coming to the CMBO feeder. Cheap entertainment.
Get yourself a bird feeder to increase the number of avian visitors this winter Just head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs - but don’t do it between Friday, December 23 and Tuesday, January 3, because there won’t be anyone there to open the door. The one time of the year that the CMBO isn’t open is the week between Christmas and New Year’s. But they’ll be open from 9:30am to 4:30pm Wednesday through Monday (still closed on Tuesdays in the winter) after that. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736). Check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free
map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season. Though we might be closed there is still info available, and there are walks throughout the year - even some in December and January. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! I heard that Seymore himself will actually be leading a three-day workshop in January on wintering hawks, eagles, and owls; a weekend of raptor-watching and learning. Past years have featured a Golden Eagle hunting Snow Geese in the company of several Bald Eagles, plus pointblank Eastern Screech Owls, Rough-legged Hawks of both color morphs, and hunting Short-eared and Great Horned Owls. If you are interested, contact Chris at 609-8610700 for details. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
T
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
HEY say that, when caught in a Cape May rip current, allow yourself to be swept along. Don’t swim against it, or you risk the chance of tiring yourself out and drowning. The thing to do is go with the flow. People say it’s best to go with the flow when dating, too. It sounds easy enough. Let yourself be swept away. Allow your relationship to unfold on its own. Even when panicstricken and gasping for air, you know, be cool. For the past month or so, my friend Bernadette’s been caught in a relationship rip-current. With one man, she’s shared dinners, drinks, long conversations and, recently, mind-blowingly good sex. Normally, Bernadette would be anxious. She’d worry that, between watching romantic comedies and taking walks on the beach, she and this man should be talking about boundaries and feelings and expectations (or lack thereof). Normally, she’d worry that sex without a commitment makes her a hussy. She’d over-analyze every conversation until she’d successfully sucked every bit of fun from the adventure of it all. Normally, she’d end up drowning before
she even got to enjoy the water. But not this time. This time, Bernadette hasn’t forced the issue of where it’s going or what it all means, and she hasn’t wanted to. She hasn’t lost sleep over it (okay, not too much sleep), and she hasn’t had any panic attacks over how reckless the whole thing feels sometimes (okay, not too many panic attacks). For the first time, Bernadette is going with the flow and, what’s more, she’s enjoying. Her friends say she’s crazy. Bernadette
can’t just go with the flow, they say, at least not without a lot of confusion. This kind of thing needs a label. Is it a fling or is it dating? A tryst? A romance? Don’t pin that down from the beginning, they say, and Bernadette may avoid drowning completely, sure, but she’s bound to end up water-logged. Keep sleeping with this guy without voicing any kind of, well, voice, and he’s bound to lose respect for her. Or, worse, she’ll lose respect for herself. So what’s a girl to do? Does she continue enjoying the dinners, the conversations, and the sex (Did I mention that it’s mind-blowingly good?) until the tide changes on its own? Or does she risk putting an immediate end to the flow of things by asking for clarity now? I have no idea. For all I know, Bernadette and this guy could end up washed up tomorrow, they could still be treading water a year from now, or anything in between. But that’s the thing about dating: you’re always swimming at your own risk. Perhaps the important thing to remember is that it doesn’t so much matter what happens once we’re there; the important thing is that, despite all the danger, we still choose to get in the water at all.
