Ramblings From The Editor
H
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ave you noticed how Cape May has, over the last couple years, become something of a celebrity magnet? I’m not talking the Hamptons here — we don’t see Steven Spielberg, Billy Joel, Jennifer Lopez or Bradley Cooper taking strolls along the promenade or playing mini-golf — but I’ve noticed a real uptick in the quantity of celebrity sightings. Most of you will no doubt have either seen, or heard of, the presence of regular A-listers such as Anne Hathaway, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, Oprah Winfrey and Tina Fey. But there have been more sightings recently, even if they haven’t reached the level of those luminaries. Earlier this summer, former Cheers star (and Broadway favorite) Bebe Neuwirth made her first trip to this fair city. Last week, two reality stars visited the town — Chris Fischer of Naked and Afraid turned up in the C-View, while Aviva Drescher, of The Real Housewives of New York City, raved about a meal she had at the Peter Shields Inn (note: I can’t stand reality shows and am only grudgingly acknowledging the aforementioned people are celebrities, but in our culture they definitely qualify).
BIRD IS THE WORD
And in the last few days, Donny Osmond (gasp!) posted on Twitter about his visit to Cape May, while the son of Kris Kristofferson graduated from the US Coast Guard training camp here (thanks to the ever-vigilant John Cooke for spotting that one). No doubt there are more — and I do welcome a headsup on any celebrity sightings, though I hope that everyone exercises restraint and dignity when seeing a celeb in our town — I’d hate to see a repeat of the scene in the Rusty Nail a couple summers ago when the Hathaways’ family meal was ruined by a crowd that was gawking and
stalking Anne. Not cool, peeps. I’m guessing that celebs are coming here for the same reason as us, you know, regular people do — to enjoy the ambience and get away from the clatter and the noise of the city. So let’s leave them to that. And a part of me wonders what it would be like if the stars really did descend upon our town in a big way — none of us want to see bodyguards at the door of, say, The Ebbitt Room, 410 Bank Street or Union Park. Still, for now, it’s pretty validating. As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, the political race in Cape May is going to be interesting this November. Two big local names have officially entered the race — recently retired fire chief Jerry Inderwies Jr (son of former mayor Jerry) and Bea Pessagno (daughter of former mayor Frank Gauvry). I’m intrigued by how their addition to city council would affect the administration of mayor Ed Mahaney if they were elected — and I think that both must have an excellent chance of winning in November. Finally, and belatedly, congratulations to Cape May’s new fire chief, Alex Coulter, an officer and a gentleman.

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Just because we’re good like that, we gave her a $25 gift certificate to spend at The Original Fudge Kitchen. I notice an accent, where are you from originally? I’m from Ireland, I moved here 20 years ago. Is your husband Irish, too? Yes, we met in New York City 20 years ago and we’ve been together ever since. Do you go back to Ireland often? Yes, my parents still live there so we go back often. What do you do for a living? I’m a stay-at-home mom. I have a two-year-old son. How long are you in Cape May for? One week. Where are you staying? Down the beach at the Marquis de Lafayette hotel. Why Cape May? It’s our first time here but we love the beach. What interesting activities did you do during your stay in Cape May? We loved the horse and carriage, and the beach, beach, beach! It’s so nice, they keep it so clean.
The winner of our next giveaway will receive a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know that bananas are technically illegal in Cape May? The thought came to mind when watching Young Albert attempt to eat one the other day at breakfast: he rather loves the taste of the skin, whilst disliking the inside, so it is, what with his lack of opposable thumbs, rather a messy and frustrating process. Usually he gets about halfway then flies into a rage that ends with mushed banana all over the walls and necessitating a bath for the canine scamp. He actually pretends to loathe bathtime, while secretly adoring it. So we must go through the ritual of reinforced gauntlets, a billyclub and a trio of stout servants to get him in there, then the same process to persude him to leave some hours later. I remember the first banana to arrive in Cape May, shortly after the war. A crate was delivered to city hall with only a “in gratitude to the serving men of Cape May, from the people of Malaysia” and no instructions. Well, the people milled around unsure what to do, or indeed what the things were (I knew but do like a good show, so kept my
peace and just observed, filming on my Super 8 camera). Various suggestions were made and things tried, some of which were not seemly and ended in visits to the local hospital. Among the more decent experiments were hair combing, toothbrushing, back scratching and throwing as offensive weapons. We were getting nowhere at all, and would have ruined the whole crate if not for a second box that arrived a few hours later from the same address with a note saying simply “McArthur”. That one had holes in, and did
not, as we feared, contain the great general himself, but a surly oranguntan who took one look around then carefully gathered up all the remaining bananas (he was very gentle but did not hesitate to use bone-crushing force when opposed) and proceeded to eat them, to mass applause and cheering. When done, he very carefully placed an unfolded banana skin on the head of every person there, and damned if the whole town did not wear them as hats for weeks, until they rotted and fell off, whereupon mass hilarity ensured when we all slipped on them. Truly, I think Cape May has had no more rewarding a gift than the contents of those two crates. However, McArthur became somewhat of a pest with his constant demands for more bananas and we in the end had to ban the things and send him off to Wildwood, where he to this day runs the Surfside Pier amusement park. Of course, people flout the ban, but I am not going to be the one to publicly eat a banana in case I feel that huge leathery hand upon my shoulder and know that he is returned and hungry.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, old-school sailing
ittle in modern transportation approaches the grandeur of a tall ship. Revisit that romantic era in Cape May with a sail aboard the A.J. Meerwald. For most of its history, Cape May seas were dotted with sails, and each sail carried the promise of adventure. Ships could bring promise, peril, or the chance to start a new life. Ships brought exotic goods from far off locales and new economic opportunities. In the 1670s, whalers from Boston came south, staying first for the summer, and then remaining all year. Instead of opportunity, a ship might bring destruction, as on June 29, 1776, when the Nancy, an American brigantine carrying gunpowder was intentionally destroyed during the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet. Ships built the fishing industry in Cape May, and the industry was still going strong when the A.J. Meerwald was launched in 1928. The vessel is a 115-foot oyster schooner built by Charles H. Stowman and Sons shipyard. In June, 1942 the Maritime Commission commandeered the Meerwald under the War Powers Act and she was turned into
a fireboat by the US Coast Guard. After the war, the ship was returned to the Meerwald family, who later sold her to Clyde A. Phillips, for use as an oyster dredge. Today, the A.J. Meerwald is a floating classroom owned and operated by the Bayshore Discovery Project, a not-for-profit educational organization with the mission to motivate people to take care of the environment. The US Coast Guard has worked closely with the Schooner Project to ensure that the vessel and crew meet strict safety standards for carrying students and adults. On board, you can help
raise and furl the sails, handle and coil the lines, and assist the crew as they trawl for fish, dredge for oysters, sample plankton, or perform water quality tests. The ship is in Cape May through August, with a variety of public sails which last about two-and-a-half hours. Prices vary from $45 per adult for an evening sail, to $35 for a morning sail, with discounts for children and seniors. Some sailings offer special events like guest speakers. On Wednesdays, kids can take part in the Sailor for a Day Camp ($70, ages 10-16). Call (856) 785-2060 or visit bayshorediscovery.org for information on sailing times and prices. You should arrive about 30 minutes prior to departure time. Bring your own food and drink — no hard liquor. Bring a jacket for the ocean breeze and a rain poncho if it looks like rain. Wear non-slip boat shoes — no flip-flops or heels. Use the bathroom before boarding because the marine toilet is for emergencies only. No smoking. Except for the camp, each child must be accompanied by an adult.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this woman for two years and she’s starting to talk marriage — a lot. I like her and of all the women I’ve dated, she’s the one I could most likely see being married to, but I still don’t know if I want that commitment. But I don’t want to lose her. So, I think I’ve found the solution. What if I give her the engagement ring, ask her to marry me, and put off setting the date for as long as I can? That way I make her happy and I keep the kisses flowing. Great idea? — Not Quite Ready Dear Not Quite Ready The Answer Lady thinks you are a moron and wishes that this “lucky” woman you are trifling with would wise up and seek other company. Commit wholeheartedly or move on to someone more deserving
of your fine qualities. When you ARE ready to make that commitment, run on down to Victorious in Congress Hall and pick out a spectacular ring to make up for what I hope was your momentary lack of sincerity. Dear Answer Lady My husband recently took up the game of golf and I now find myself in the land of the golf widow. He is either at the practice range or playing nine holes after work or 18 holes on the weekends, or worse — watch-
ing it on TV. He spends more time at Cape May National than he does with me. We never do anything anymore and I am getting pretty upset by it all. What should I do? I want my husband back — Golf Widow Dear Golf Widow Never fear, you are witnessing the honeymoon period, if you will. The Answer Lady is quite sure he will soon get frustrated with his level of playing and look for other distractions — namely you. As that fictional golf sage Bagger Vance once said, “The rhythm of the game like the rhythm of life. Golf is a game that can’t be won, only played.” I would first speak to him about your concerns, and then when that goes nowhere, I would drive home my point by going out and buying yourself an inexpensive set of golf clubs. Then show up at Cape May National — right about the time he is set to tee off — and take a few lessons. Who knows, you just might learn to like the game yourself and outdrive him. At the very least, you will have made your point and you will both get a good laugh.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.
These beautiful hardcover, illustrated books are available at the Exit Zero Store & Gallery. Or at our online store: ezstore.us. And at selected local stores.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hat if nobody had opened your eyes to the world of birds. Never introduced you to the marvel that is an indigo bunting, a canary-like bird so blue that bluebirds are ashamed to be seen in the same field. What if nobody ever took you on a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip? You may never have discovered why Cape May is celebrated the world over for its diversity and volume of birds. What a loss. Don’t you know someone who is just marking time between meals, someone who could use a little delight in their life? Or maybe some young person who is counting down the last days of summer, wondering how something so priceless as summer vacation could have slipped away. How about treating them to a last days of summer fling, a chance to make up for all those squandered days. Treat them to get out there and embrace the natural world as a way of tying a nice bright ribbon around summer 2014. Go out and see how many different species of birds you can see in a morning.
You can pick up a bird checklist (a scorecard) at the Northwood Center in Cape May, then step outside and check off the Carolina chickadee at the feeder, northern cardinal, mourning dove and the Carolina wren singing his tiny lungs out, before heading over to Cape May Point State Park and ticking off mallard, mute swan, great egret, Forster’s tern and laughing gull. Nothing to it. That’s right, finding birds is like a treasure hunt. Or collecting shells on the beach,
except the birds are more colorful. One of the most often-heard expressions among birders is: I wonder what people who don’t watch birds do with their time? I guess that’s why they invented television and computer games. But why on earth would you want to play Angry Birds when you can engage them for real. And take a friend with you, who will thank you ever after. Be a hero save and some special person from a life of boredom as someone once did for you. Back to the indigo bunting. The bird whose plumage humbles bluebirds and rivals a summer sky are still being seen and heard in the South Cape May meadows just off Sunset Boulevard. But don’t dawdle, males stop singing by the end of August. If you want to see what they look like, go to birdcapemay. org and peruse Karl Luken’s summary of the Monday August 4 field trip — under ‘blogs’ and ‘field trip reports’. Come on the next walk and be wowed. And bring that special friend — wow divided by two is still wow.
