Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

t was only a couple weeks ago that I was praising the Karapanagiotis brothers for having the gumption to launch a very different kind of restaurant in Cape May — Shamone, a tapas joint where only a certain amount of people would be admitted, every night at 7pm, and served a 15-course tasting menu, standing up. Alas, that idea didn’t last very long. Shamone was a victim of zoning rules — turns out that the building was zoned for take-out food, not consumption onsite. Yiannis Karapanagiotis, who was running the place with brother Peter (they also have George’s Place, YB and Pano), says, “I was told by my surrounding residents that they didn’t want me there and they would fight it at the planning board meeting. We’re not interested in a battle with the residents or nearby shop or restaurant owners. “I believe we were doing a good thing down there, but we’ll open something else there and Shamone will go somewhere else if the deal makes sense.” I’m sorry to hear that, especially if the plan was scuppered by short-sighted

BIRD IS THE WORD

neighbors — Cape May needs more invention, new ideas, fresh energy, just like any place that wants to stay relevant. I hope the brothers K do find another spot — I admire their entrepreneurial spirit, and they make some damn good food, too. Speaking of food, I want to mention my favorite new dishes every now and again. Right now I’m obsessed with the Mad Batter’s seafood pizza. Try it. A very belated congratulations to my great pal Victor Grasso, who recently enjoyed the most successful show in the eight-year history of the SOMA NewArt

³

Gallery, here in Cape May. All told, Victor sold just over three billion dollars in paintings. Okay, maybe not that much, but he did well and I’m delighted to see his genius work continue to be appreciated by people who actually know great art when they see it (me, I’m practically a philistine, but I still know a genius when I see one). I’m even more excited that his work is going to be enjoyed all across the country — Victor has upcoming shows in Charleston, SC; San Francisco; and SOHO, New York. Road trips! There is no way I am going to say, geez, hasn’t the summer f lown past, but, geez, hasn’t it?! It seems like May just the other day. So, did you fulfill all of your summer resolutions? Nah, me neither. But we still have the glorious month of September to enjoy America’s Original Seaside Resort. I am particularly excited about a great event being put together by those fab folks at Cape May Brewing Company — see pages 74 and 75 for details of the first annual NJ and Delaware Craft Beer Festival on September 6. See you there, and enjoy this special month!

PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV

Patrick Dougherty, Amanda, Vivian White

“LATER THAT DAY, I was reminded of one of life’s secrets: anytime you get a chance to have an 80-plus-year-old Southern chef cook for you, do it. Make that two 80-plus-year-old chefs with a century-old chicken-frying pan, and it’s worth changing your plans.” “And in the summer when the shiny new restaurants largely left me wanting, these classics served me the taste of reliable comfort that I was craving.”

Our roving photographer bumped into Kate and Chris from Pennsylvania while they were in town for the day. Just because we’re good like that, we gave them a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. How long are you in Cape May for? We’re here for the day — we are staying in Delaware and taking the ferry back later. Is Delaware fun? We just went to the beach. What are you both doing for a living? We’re college students. What are you studying? Graphic design. So what are your plans for life? Whatever life brings us, right now just the beach. How long have you two been together? We’re not together. We’re best friends. What’s your favorite movie? Fight Club. You must be going back to school soon, how was your summer? Great! We spent it at the beach. What do you think of Cape May? We love it. It’s such a pretty town. Would you considering living here? Definitely.

The winner of our next giveaway will receive a $25 gift certificate to spend at Cape Atlantic Book Company. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

remember the day William Wallace came to Cape May, seeking support for Scottish independence. At least, we all assumed it was Wallace: his face was painted blue and he was wrapped in a hundred yards of plaid and raged incoherently. Now I think about it, the dates might not quite tally, as he did embark from a steamship, but we tend to take people at face value here, and if a roaring Scotchman pitches up declaring himself a famous freedom fighter, who were we to doubt him. Anyways, Braveheart captured the hearts of the townsfolk with his rough and ready ways, and soon every lady and a disproportionate number of men and small dogs were eating out of his calloused hand (the Young Albert of the day was particularly smitten, and took to wearing a tiny tartan kilt and a feather in his hair). We never did understand exactly what he wanted, any more than we do the editor of this fine newspaper, but we deduced that he was keen to raise a fighting regiment and return to do something courageous in Scotland. Also we

were rather bored of his drinking a bottle of Scotch every night and singing songs about revolution and injustice, and also worried that if left to his ways for too long, there might be a sudden and unfortunate shift in Cape May’s gene pool towards red-haired brutes (if any of you reading this are pale of face and ginger of head, then you are, I reckon you are indeed a Wallace descendant) and so rather quickly raised a fine body of primates from Wildwood, piped them aboard a liner headed to Europe and waved them off with relief, with declarations of everlasting friendship

and a legally binding agreement to support a newly independent Scotland by importing a hundred tons of oats, 1,000 live haggis and a half mile of tweed. Of course, we knew that Wallace had less chance of success than that of a finishing school opening in Wildwood. Or so we thought: that last bargain came back to haunt me last week, when I was told that once more, Scotland is on the verge of independence, and should the fiery, party natives of that land decide to throw of the English yolk/teat, we will have to actually pony up to purchase our first shipment of Scottish goods. The oats I suppose we could eat in some manner, possibly by mixing them into saltwater taffy, and the tweed I am sure will catch on in Cape May’s fashionable circles, but the live haggis? Why, a pack of these beasts will strip a man and a horse to the bone in seconds. I advise you all to dust off your elephant guns and biteproof underpants, and watch the harbor intently and with trepidation, should the Scotch vote “aye” come this September 18.

The Movie Column

G

By Mal Knapp, Treasurer of Cape May Film Festival

uardians of the Galaxy is another movie from the Marvel franchise — the folks who’ve brought us the Avenger series (Iron Man, Captain America and so on) and the X-Men series. This time, our heroes are the Guardians of the Galaxy, five of the least likely characters you’d ever expect; a handsome rogue, Peter Quill (who calls himself Star Lord), Gamora, a female professional assassin, Drax, a colorfully tattooed warrior in search of vengeance, Rocket, a genetically engineered raccoon, and Groot, a humanoid tree. As you might expect, the writers have a good time with them. The Guardians meet and join forces on a series of alien planets and fight to defend an advanced civilization much like ours (okay, definitely more advanced than ours) from the usual nasty forces of evil. (Spoiler alert: the good guys win). The film starts with Quill (played by Chris Pratt) being kidnapped by aliens as a kid in 1988 and quickly moves to an alien planet in 2014 where he’s listening to a tape

Yet another release from the Marvel playbook, but it’s actually worth watching. deck with a mix tape from the ’70s & ’80s and chasing an orb that he says “Has a real shiny Ark of the Covenant/Maltese Falcon kinda vibe.” Sound like you’re smack in the 8’0s version of sci-fi? Maybe, but it works. The director moves it at the right pace so that you’re neither bored nor overwhelmed. We figured we’d be watching another clichéd plot that was raised from terrible to mediocre by a lot of CGI’d action. Turns out it’s a lot better than that. Each of the

five heros is an interesting character that develops as the film goes on. For instance, Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) is a whiz with tools who’s also bad tempered and inclined to violence – not your everyday raccoon. He’s a hoot to watch and listen to and he grows on you as the film goes on. As do the others. Drax is very good and holds his own against Rocket and Groot. I know, out-acting a walking tree may not seem like much praise, but Drax is very well played BY Dave Bautista and gets great lines because he can’t understand metaphors. The film is visually outstanding. Many of the shots are compelling, because of the director’s inventive selections of shapes and choices of colors. In addition, it just happened that we saw it twice, first in 2D and second in I-MAX 3D. We’re generally not fans of 3D, but as we watched it first time we could see how 3D might really enhance it and that’s how it turned out. There are several shots that work well enough in 2D, but that are really breathtaking in 3D. Check it out.

The Activity Column

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, West Cape May Tomato Festival

ummer’s end always comes too soon, and one of the first signs is West Cape May’s last farmers market of the season. No more Tuesday nights strolling through the “backyard,” listening to music and making dinner out of fresh tomatoes and peaches. No more new friends made sharing napkins on a picnic bench. No more fresh lemonade and wildflower bouquets. Time to give up on tomatoes and start thinking about cauliflower and squash. Come back next year. What’s that you say? You can’t wait until next summer for your fresh tomato fix? Never fear — the West Cape May Tomato Festival helps you stretch the season. On August 30, join food, craft, and antique vendors and local businesses in Wilbraham Park from 9am to 5pm. There will be live music all day, and “special tomato-related events.” Come for tomato soup, tomato salad, and fried green tomatoes, and pick up some tomatoes to bring home. The rain date is August 31. Proceeds from the festival benefit the Borough Shade Tree and Environmental Com-

mittees. The Jersey tomato is a perfect piece of produce, designed to make you fall in love. There’s an irresistible mystique of a dangerous past — the tomato is part of the nightshade family and was once thought to be poisonous. The tomato has antioxidants which are good for your heart — the French call it a “love apple.” There’s the variety of color, from green to red to that weird purplish varietal. All of that colorful lycopene is good for your skin and hair, keeping you beautiful. The tomato is

the base of many perfect date recipes — you have you seen Lady and the Tramp, haven’t you? And, to make you enjoy it even more, science has discovered another health benefit of the tomato — it fosters bone health, so you can stroll into old age with ease. After the tomato festival, Cape May’s farm markets can hook you up with tomatoes for several more weeks. Duckies Farm Market at 736 Broadway, West Cape May, offers a range of local fruits and veggies. They also have milk, bread, and eggs for your convenience, along with lots of jarred sauces and jams to add flair to your meal. Also try Legates Farm Market at 3400 Bayshore Road and No Frills Farm, 1028 Seashore Road — check out their flowers, too. Rea’s Farm Market at 400 Stevens Street in West Cape May will even let you pick your own. There are a hundred ways to enjoy a good tomato. My favorite recipe comes from my niece, Paige. Slice a tomato and slap it between two slices of bread. Add a little salt. Enjoy. Follow with a bowl of blueberries. Now, remember that taste all winter long.

Get away from your computer and visit our charming streets to see our historic homes, many from the late 1800s. You’ll find unique shops, select services and excellent restaurants. Did someone say “antiquing”? West Cape May is the place to do just that. One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing and you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to West Cape May. So step outside your comfort zone and visit our quaint neighborhood and discover what real livin’ easy is all about. Not to be missed — those Jersey tomatoes at the Tomato Festival on August 30. Upcoming events at Wilbraham Park Tomato Festival – August 30, 9-5 (rain date August 31) Lima Bean Festival – October 11, 9-5 (rain date October 12) At Rea’s Farm, Stevens Street Rea’s Harvest Country Fair – October 20 (rain date October 21)

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’m afraid the magic might have run out of my marriage. My husband is still amorous, but lately I find I cannot come up with enough excuses to avoid his attentions. I love him just as much as I did the day we married, and am mighty impressed that at 72 he still finds me attractive, but I have other things I want to do. Am I wrong? — No Magic Left Dear No Magic Left Yes, you are wrong. This solution is simple. You need to cut back on some of those other things you want to do and make time for your amorous septuagenarian hubby. A date night is in order. And a date night every week, not just here and there. BUT first and foremost, before you can charge someone else’s battery, you need to recharge your

Wise answers to perplexing questions

own. A complete work-over at the Cape May Day Spa is in order. Start with your toes, move your way up to a facial, ending with a full body massage. Then, a romantic dinner at YB, followed by a walk on the beach. You’ll be back in the groove in no time. Dear Answer Lady I am very upset with my mother. We live three hours away and like to visit her here in Cape May as often as we can, but I feel my mother should clear her social calendar for

us and spend more time with her grandchildren. Although she is very generous with me and the kids, she is hardly ever home in the evenings. She is either out to dinner, at a soiree or rushing off to a fund raiser. Don’t you think her family should be her priority? — Neglected Dear Neglected The Answer Lady is guessing that yours was a dutiful mother while you were growing up. For you to expect that same level of attention to be directed toward your children is unrealistic. I suspect if she were a meddling mother, constantly trying to impose her will, you would not be happy either. And, if you were just looking for a 24/7 babysitter while you and hubby vacay, hire an au pair. Meanwhile, before you arrive, why not map out, with your mother’s permission, a loose itinerary which includes the entire family? A couple of hours on the beach one day with a trip to HotDog Tommy’s for lunch, breakfast at Uncle Bill’s Pancake house one morning, and dinner and a sunset watch at Harpoon Henry’s.

COMEDY “A world-class comedy” TheatreMania.com

“Keeps an audience in a state of tickled contentment” The New York Times

byNoel Coward directed by

RoySteinberg

A classic ghost story with a zany twist as a séance goes awry, accidentally stirring up the tempermental specter of a novelist’s late wife. It’s a hauntingly hilarious time as she does her best to spook her husband’s current wife. A comic masterpiece.

The book that everyone in Cape May is talking about It was supposed to be published by the famed Philadelphia company J. B. Lippincott in the late 1940s, but after a dispute with the author, it lay in a closet for 60 years. Now, finally... this remarkable story can be told, and enjoyed.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

CUJO is an older chocolate labrador retriever and shar pei mix with tons of love to give! He gets along well with cats and other dogs but is looking for a quieter home with no children as they are just too much for him in his old age. Cujo qualifies for the Senior for Seniors program and his adoption fee is free if you are over 62 years.

«

WALTER is a young plott hound mix. He is a big boy but he is very sweet and loves to play! He loves other dogs and even gets along well with children and cats. Walter is very social and likes to meet new people but he needs some training. Give this fun boy a chance and stop by the shelter. He can’t wait to find his forever home!

«

LAYLA is a pit bull terrier and can’t wait to meet you! Her previous owner moved away and couldn’t bring her with them. She is a wonderful sweetheart but is easily spooked by quick movements. Layla would prefer a home with only older kids and no cats. She likes other dogs but she needs to get to know them first.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

«

IGLOO is a laid back boy who will certainly make you feel loved. He is pure white, hence the name. Everyone at the shelter jokes that Igloo is a cat and a dog rolled into one. He is an excellent companion and adjusts very well to new situation. You won’t be sorry when you meet this “purrr-fect” boy.

«

TRIXIE is a loving girl who came to the shelter earlier this summer. She originally arrived with her daughter, Alice, but they don’t play well together. She is a very sweet and outgoing as long as she is the only cat in your household. Trixie is up to date on all her vaccinantions and her adoption fee is only $20.

«

MOLLY is a friendly little girl who would love to meet you! Molly sounds like she is always upset but it’s just the way she likes to talk. Molly is quite the sweetie pie, all she needs is someone to give her a second chance! She is up to date on all her vaccinations and her adoption fee is only $35!

Bird Droppings

S

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

o today on the Monday Morning Meadows walk we had a yellow warbler. So what? Glad you asked. Yes the bird is a common autumn migrant and even a local breeder. Why dedicate space to a common bird? Because common as it is I have no idea where this particular bird heralds from. Yellow warblers breed all the way up to the Arctic. For all I know the bird might have started its journey from some willow thicket snugged up against James Bay or Great Slave Lake. Now it’s in Cape May. Two months from now it may be on the Surinam where it will sit out the northrern winter. So what’s so unique about this warbler? Nothing. That’s my point. It is just one of tens of millions of birds that call Cape May part of their annual territory. A territory that crosses national boundaries and multiple time zones. I’ll bet it never occured to you that a willow thicket in Arctic Canada, a mangrove swamp in South America and the bayberry in your yard have anything in common. But

they do they are knit by a small yellow bird who connects the dots at least once a year as it makes the rounds across its hemispheric territory. It’s not the only bird or even species that calls your yard its east coast retreat. That bayberry bush or weedy tangle by the fence is part of a time-share with common yellowthroat, Wilson’s warbler, Northern Waterthrush and any number of Neotropical migrants that will be passing through Cape May in the weeks ahead.

So don’t tidy up the garden or trim back the vegetation now that prime songbird visitation is upon us. Migration is a stressful time and the most dangerous challenge birds face. This is particularly true for Cape May insofar as 80% of the birds migrating through are juveniles — inexperienced foragers who are trusting to luck and your supportive inclinations that they will find food and shelter. It has been estimated that 90% of all the birds hatched in a year fail to see the next. You can boost their odds by offering migrating songbirds the sheltering habitat they need. No they don’t need seed. The insects they find in your native vegetation will do just fine. But keeping your cat indoors, particularly in the morning, would be a responsible gesture. You might also leave the screens up — birds striking glass is the number one killer of birds in suburbia. It has been estimated that a billion birds are killed by window strikes every year in the US, so leave the screens up — they are softer than glass.

“This custom home in Cape May Beach has the feel of an urban loft.”
