The Police Blotter

NORTHPORT, New York – A 66-year-old Main Street woman called police on Sunday, March 13 at 5:28pm to report that several youths were trying to ride a boat down a hill near Woodside Avenue. The youths were gone upon when police arrived on the scene.

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “The sea gull sees farthest who flies highest.” Proverbs “It’s hard enough to go through puberty. Everyone’s embarassed about their youth, but it just so happens that the 1980s were particularly disgusting. Flock of Seagulls is not cool.” Alyssa Milano “Sea gulls: Mine. Mine. Mine. Mine. Nigel: Oh would you just shut up? You’re rats with wings.” Finding Nemo “When sea gulls follow trawlers, they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.” Eric Cantona “Father: Son, this may not be the best life, but it’s all we know.’ Jonathan: There’s got to be more to life than fighting for fish heads!” Jonathan Livingston Seagull

“The hotel ‘guests’ do not easily pick up their Summer acquaintances. One who enters the ballroom uninformed of the etiquette of the place is likely to experience strange snubbing, which will squelch any desire, should he express one, to mingle freely with the society of the place. It is quite bad form, for instance, for a new ‘guest’ to take a place in certain groups of chairs which, season after season, are occupied by certain regular habitués.” – The New York Times, July 28, 1912

Facebook Mystery Contest

Weird Word Of The Week

CHARADRIIFORMES – This is a diverse order of small to medium-large birds, including seagulls. It includes about 350 species and has members in all parts of the world. Most charadriiformes live near water and keep a diet of invertebrates and other small animals.

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew for help. To enter, look for the mystery photo at facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

Sea gulls are caring and attentive parents. Both the male and female of the species pair for life and they take turns incubating, feeding and protecting their chicks. They lay greenish eggs, two to three at a time and it takes 26 days to hatch them. The nests can be found in large colonies in coastal marshes.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with two spring rolls. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

B

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

ack-to-school commercials notwithstanding, there is plenty of summer left here in Cape May, so take advantage of it. Go to a farmers market, or two: hit the one in West Cape May on Tuesday, then venture over to the North Cape May market on a Saturday at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. Come to think of it, go ahead and take a ferry ride. Get dressed up, make a reservation at your favorite restaurant and then take in a play at Cape May Stage or East Lynne Theater Company. Paddle around on a kayak, book a dolphin watch, then hit the arcade for as much skeeball as your arm can stand. Leave the car at home and ride your bike to work. Or skip work altogether and spend the day on the beach. Tell your boss we said it was okay. THIS week’s edition of Exit Zero is the Sea Gull Issue. You find plenty of content related to that nefarious bird in these pages, but we were recently tipped off on another bird-oriented happening. Sarah Woodruff, 23, and her mother Patricia Pellegrino Woodruff recently raised a whole nest of baby Mallards to adulthood right down the street from our global HQ. The Woodruffs noticed that the mother Mallard guarding the nest in their yard hadn’t been moving for several days, and not long after, the mother duck was nowhere to be found. About 15 hours later, Sarah called the Cape May Bird Observatory, where they advised the women to “let nature take its course.” This didn’t satisfy the determined Woodruff women. “We were like ‘No, screw that,’” Sarah says. She purchased an incubator and put all 14 eggs inside, turning them and spraying them with water every day for a

³

month. When they hatched, she helped break open the shells and remove the ducklings. All of them survived. The Woodruffs raised the ducklings in the backyard, feeding them mashed up duck seed and water. “All the ducks would follow me everywhere,” Sarah says. “When they’re hatched, whatever they see first they imprint on, so they thought I was their mother.” She gave the ducklings flying lessons by dropping them from chest level to the ground, and took them down to a nearby dock until they got the hang of swimming. Once the Mallards had their flight feathers, Sarah drove them to the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford, New Jersey. “They were all released into the wild after a few weeks. Now they have 300 acres and a beautiful river to swim in,” she says. “I didn’t know anything about farm animals. It was just kind of instinct. I read a lot online.” Pretty impressive, we’d say. Flip to page 78 for a cute shot of the ducklings ‘taking to the water.’ As good causes go, we’re hardpressed to think of many better than

³

our very own local radio station, WCFA 101.5 FM. This coming Sunday, August 21, they will be celebrating their five-year anniversary with a fund-raising concert at Natali Vineyards on Route 47 in Cape May Court House. They’re telling us the music will be cool AND hot – blues with the Jeff House Band and salsa by Mambo Machine, and if that won’t get you moving, there’s no hope for you. In its five years on the air, WCFA has become an integral part of the Cape May community. The all-volunteer station is a 24/7/365 operation, combining an eclectic blend of jazz, Celtic, singer-songwriter and blues music, along with communitygenerated programs and talk radio on topics ranging from gardening to local interviews. So throw your favorite beach chair in the car, strap on your dancing shoes and make a date with our friends at WCFA. The event runs from 4-8pm, and the gates open at 3pm. Your admission is $25 for adults, $20 for ages 12-20, and kids under twelve are admitted free of charge. You can’t beat that price for excellent music, complimentary wine tasting for the over-21 crowd, and access to lots of food vendors. Get out and show your support to this great community organization. FINALLY, our thoughts go out to the family, friends and former pupils of Gene Sole, a much-loved teacher at Lower Cape May Regional High School and Richard M. Teitelman Middle School (where he served as Principal), and a decorated veteran of the US Marine Corps, from which he retired after 20 years as a Lieutenant Colonel. To say his passing is a huge loss to the community is something of an understatement.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about sea gulls. This week’s winner is Christina Vlavianos, 29+, a teaching assistant from Long Island, New York. We found Christina strolling the Washington Street Mall. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Has a sea gull ever pooped on you? Yes, this morning on our beach towel! Has a sea gull ever stolen food from you? Yes. Where do sea gulls sleep? In the dune grass. Christina wins a $50 gift certificate to the Pilot House for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

C

ocktail hour on the porch is a Cape May tradition. But, when is the proper time to begin? Victorians probably had oh-sostrict thoughts on the subject, and, thank goodness, they’re not around to tell us what to do. We think that 5pm is about right, and as it says on the cocktail napkin, “It has to be 5 o’clock somewhere!” We’ll simply offer some suggestions for cool libations, whenever you choose to enjoy them. Legend has it that the name “cocktail” refers to a rooster’s tail (or cock tail) used as a garnish in Colonial times. (We prefer mint, citrus or fruit.) Cocktails were especially popular during Prohibition, when the booze in speakeasies tasted so bad that folks had to add flavorings to make it palatable. Today, we have wonderful liqueurs, fresh fruits and herbs to design our own summer beverages. Try these, our personal favorites and some of friends. For those who prefer their beverages without alcohol, a Cosmopolitan mocktail is included, too. Unless otherwise indicated, all recipes make one serving. Leslie Martel’s Venetian Sunrise Leslie Martel is known throughout Cape May as the “Queen of Cocktails.” Here is one of her specialties, using two Italian favorites: Prosecco and Aperol, a delightful aperitif with a gorgeous coral cast. orange juice Prosecco Aperol Put two tablespoons of OJ in a champagne flute, add Prosecco and top with a splash of Aperol. Stir. To make Venetian Sunrises for a crowd, mix the ingredients in a pitcher, add sparkling

water and serve over ice in wine glasses. Cava Sangria makes 4 ½ cups Cava is the Spanish version of French Champagne and Italian Prosecco. It’s great on its own, and even more delightful in this simple sangria, another good recipe for a crowd. 8 large mint leaves 1 750 ml bottle of Cava, chilled ¾ c white grape juice, chilled ½ c sliced strawberries ¼ c orange liqueur In a large pitcher, lightly crush the mint leaves against the inside with a wooden spoon. Stir in all remaining ingredients, and serve immediately over ice. Moscow Mule RTR This was our favorite drink at the old Russian Tea Room in New York, where it was served in an icy copper mug. You can serve it in tall, vintage colored aluminum tumblers. 1 ½ oz vodka ginger beer soda slice of lime In each tumbler, combine vodka with ginger beer over ice and garnish with a slice of lime. Canton Ginger Limonata Ginger and citrus are perfect together in this sparkling lemonade. 1½ oz Canton Ginger liqueur natural lemon soda or Pellegrino Limonata candied ginger mint In a tall glass with ice, pour liqueur and fill with lemon soda. Garnish with candied ginger on a skewer and a sprig of mint.

Cape May Cooks ? From Page 45 Sunny Day Lemontini Limoncello is an Italian aperitif infused with the peel and juices of lemons from the Amalfi coast. (It is available in several brands.) You can keep limoncello in the freezer and enjoy it straight. It also makes a lovely martini. Use festive glasses and frost them first if you have time. In a cocktail shaker, combine 1½ oz vodka and ½ oz limoncello. Shake with ice and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with a wide strip of lemon peel.

One of our favorites, and a great reason for growing your own mint. Mojitos are best made tall glass by tall glass – in a pitcher the lime and mint won’t distribute evenly.

GENUINE FEATHER HAIRPIECES FROM EUROPE!

Let’s face it, hair wigs never look totally convincing, and growing numbers of Parisians are instead opting for a gorgeous new look: seagullfeather headpieces. They’re light, comfortable, lovely to touch and beautiful to behold, particularly when it’s breezy. The French LOVE the ‘Herring Gull” white-andblack featherpiece most of all, and so will you. European featherpieces sell for as much as $3000 each. But our Cape May copies are only $2! Call (609) 770-8479 and for an extra featherpiece free, say “I want a seagull on MY head!”

20th Annual Mid-Atlantic $500,000 Tournament

A

Anglers from all over descend on Cool Cape May

nyone who knows anything about fishing (and even some of us who don’t) knows about the annual MidAtlantic $500,000 Marlin and Tuna Tournament, held right here in Cape May at South Jersey Marina and Canyon Club Marinas. This year, they’re pulling out all the stops for their 20th anniversary, with a week-long celebration from Sunday, August 21 through Friday, August 26. Back in 1992, the “Mother of All Marlin Tournaments,” as it’s been called, posted an unprecedented up-front prize of $500,000. Over the years, the tournament has grown to be one of the top fishing events in the world. Known for its great fishing, hospitality and camaraderie, it has become a must-attend for competitive anglers from around the globe. While crews keep busy on the water looking for that prize-winning catch, dockside activities, both day and night, offer a chance for participants to relax, renew old friendships, and share fish stories. Numerous special events are planned,

including local brewers Cape May Brewing Company hosting a tasting of their special Mid-Atlantic 500 “Fish On” beer on Wednesday night. Looking for something a little stronger? KRU82, the exciting new vodka from Holland, will offer tastings of their product during the tournament as well. BMW of North America, exclusive automotive sponsor of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000, will also be on site each day of the tournament, showcasing the newest BMW models, including the all-new 2012 BMW 6 Series, and test drives will be available to participants at the Canyon Club

Marina Ship’s Store from Sunday to Friday, 11am-6:30pm. BMW and ZF Marine will jointly hold an exclusive reception during weigh-ins on Thursday evening for their customers. Also, a special appearance by country music star Colton James will take place Thursday, when he and his band will entertain with their hits, including “Brave Men,” a powerful tribute to American troops. Even if you’re unable to participate in the tournament, you can still be part of it all. August is officially “Guy Harvey Month” at South Jersey Marina, and brandnew artwork and merchandise by the world-renowned wildlife artist will be on display. Harvey has been a great friend of the Mid-Atlantic $500,000 since its inception, and his tireless efforts to support the sport are well known. The public is invited to meet Guy personally and have him sign artwork, T-shirts, or other items bearing his art at The Ship’s Store at South Jersey Marina on August 23 and 24, from 1-4pm. For more information, call 609-884-2400, or visit the official website at www.ma500.com.

“Exquisite cuisine served in a charming 19th century setting makes LaVerandah one of Cape May’s finest restaurants. Elegant dining is offered on the outdoor verandah or in a high-ceiling room cooled by sea breezes flowing through French doors opening to the porch... remarkable cuisine... and sophistication...”

Customer Service

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

accidentally put a golf club through my father’s screen door. (It’s a long story.) When I called the screen repair shop to see if it was still open, the guy who picked up said, “Well, I am answering the phone, aren’t I?” When I dropped the screen off, this man rolled his eyes. He never said thank you. So much for service with a smile. I was tempted to take my screen business elsewhere. And considering how often I accidentally send things through this screen door, that’s saying something. Afterwards, I paid a parking ticket in Cape May. (Actually, I paid three parking tickets; let’s just say that neither golf nor parking is my forte.) When I walked up to the payment counter, the woman seated there rolled her eyes as though she were expecting me to give her grief. I understand that she must get a lot of f lak from disgruntled Cape Mayniacs who’ve forgotten to feed their meters, but preemptive eye rolls seem uncalled for. Later, I drove up the road a bit to a fish

market. I’d been hoping to interview the owner for a story I’m working on. When I asked him to answer a few questions, he rolled his eyes. I told him it would be good PR for his business. “Does it look like I need the PR?” he said, motioning to his line of waiting customers. I was starting to feel irked. Whatever happened to service with a smile? I wanted to see some happiness, damnit. In the customer service industry, being pleasant is supposed to be part of the job description. So how come all I could seem to get were eye rolls? I was pondering just this thought as I pulled up to a gas station a week later.

I’d been in the car for a while, enjoying a little road trip out of Cape May. I sat at the pump for five minutes, waiting for the man standing nearby to come fill my tank. Instead, he hovered over the car next to me, f lirting with the driver. I waited a few more minutes, until a couple of cars had piled up behind me, before I started giving him my best what-the-heck stare. Now it was my turn to roll my eyes in exasperation – what was this guy thinking? Then I remembered I was in Pennsylvania. This man was not an employee, and no one was coming to pump my gas. Shrugging apologetically, I got out of the car to do it myself. It occurred to me that maybe the reason my screen repair man and the fish market guy and the parking ticket lady seemed so put out is that they’ve spent so much of their time dealing with people, well, like me – folks with an attitude that isn’t at all valid. Embarrassed, I filled up my tank and headed back to Cape May for another night of waiting tables – with a smile, damnit.

Seagull In Flight From The Bird House

Seabird Carvings From West End Carvers

Beach Sign From Cape May Wicker

If this beautiful large-scale carving of a gull in flight doesn’t put you in mind of the seashore, we don’t know what will. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and hand-carved by Lance Lichtensteiger of Surf City, and looks perfect indoors or on the front porch. Visit our good neighbors at The Bird House and check it out. $650. 109 Sunset Boulevard, 609884-8471, www.birdhousecapemay.com.

If you prefer your sea bird carvings on a smaller scale, add just the right touch of the shore to a shelf or side table with one of these handmade creations from West End Carvers at the West End Garage. The ones shown are by Vincent Gianetto III of Beverly, and they range in price from $17-$95. 484 West Perry Street, 609-770-8261, www. thewestendgarage.com.

Can’t find your way to the beach? Why, whichever way the sea gull is headed, of course. This charming wooden sign looks great staked out in your garden, reminding all your visitors that a day at the beach is just within reach. There’s quite a selection here too, and they change with the seasons. Can’t beat the price either – $5.99. 203 Sunset Boulevard, 609-884-1849.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I read with interest your letter from the reader whose boyfriend is a bad dancer. My boyfriend, although delightful in most every other way, also suffers from a lack of talent. Unfortunately, it’s in the bedroom. The first couple of times, I thought it was just nerves, but no – still the same. I think he’s wonderful, but I can’t stay with someone if the sex feels like a drive-by shooting. I’m going to have to break up with him, but the question is: should I tell him why? – Unsatisfied Dear Unsatisfied Oh, dear – how unfortunate! The Answer Lady will assume that you have tried to, uh, direct the proceedings while the festivities were ongoing, shall we say, but to no avail? And make sure that you are holding up your end of the bargain, dear – sex is a cooperative act, at least at its best. Some women, the

Answer Lady has been told, just lie there like an inanimate object, although she can’t even imagine such a thing. Just because we have the equipment doesn’t mean we all automatically know what to do with it, although some people are just better at it than others. Then again, there is much to be said for chemistry – it’s simply not always there every time two people meet. (Can you imagine if it was? We’d all be running around having sex with each other all the time, and nothing would ever get done, but the Answer Lady digresses.) Where

were we? If it’s a matter of things just moving along too quickly, perhaps a trip to Lace Silhouettes or Lovejoys for some sexy lingerie will keep him distracted that much longer. But if you choose to end it, you should simply tell him that you think he’s grand, but there is no chemistry between you. Good luck. Dear Answer Lady I have a ‘friend with benefits’ arrangement with a girl I’ve known since college. We’re unattached, get along well, and occasionally sleep together. Every Wednesday we go with a group of friends to wing night at the C-View, and last week she walked in with a guy. She said he was someone from work, but I felt jealous. What gives? – Confused Dear Confused FWB relationships can work, but they often end when one party either develops romantic feelings for the other, or they meet someone else who offers them more. The Answer Lady is not saying your relationship is over because your friend arrived with a colleague (who may be just that), but because you reacted with jealousy, you should examine your feelings a little more closely.

Chance Meetings

A

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

stronomers have a formula to calculate how many planets with intelligent life there might be in the universe. It’s called the Drake Equation, and it goes something like this. Start with all the stars in the universe, then subtract all of those with no planets. Next subtract all the planets that are too close or too distant from their star to support life. Keep on eliminating factors like that until you arrive at the answer. This is the kind of thing that scientists discuss over beers after work, while wondering why they still don’t have girlfriends. I’m a man of science, so perhaps the Drake Equation can be applied to romance as well. Mixing science and romance is rarely a good idea, but what the hell, we’re just estimating the likelihood of me ever meeting Miss Right. We’ll have to make some assumptions along the way, but science often requires a little guesswork. Let’s begin with the year-round population of Cape May County, which at

the last census was 97,265. Unfortunately for me, let’s say that half of them are men, leaving 48,633 women. To be reasonable, I’m looking for a woman plus or minus ten years of my age, which eliminates about 2/3 of the women, leaving me with 16,210. Looking good so far. Until you factor in that maybe, with luck, half of them are single at any given time. If I were looking for someone college educated, another 3/4 are gone, leaving just 2,026 women of the

original pool of over 48,000. Now it’s starting to look like a needle in a haystack. And we haven’t even considered other criteria, like their view of the world, sense of humor, or even if I just think they’re attractive. The number is dwindling fast. Some say there are lots of fish in the sea, but scientists will tell you that global fish populations are dropping fast. Can the same be said of women? Is the single lady becoming an endangered species? Some of you will say I’m being pessimistic again, but on the contrary: I’m a hopeful romantic. The odds may not be great, but I’m going to keep casting my line out to see what nibbles at it. Because love and romance, thankfully, can’t be boiled down to scientific equations. Can you blind me with science? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. Maybe I’m the solution to your own Drake Equation.

The Theater Column

I

Arts Editor Tom Sims reviews Cape May Stage’s “Steel Magnolias”

n this age of social media, one place still reigns supreme as a hub of small talk, gossip, and yes, sometimes slander — namely, the beauty salon. Cape May Stage recently opened its new production, Steel Magnolias, a slice of life comedy/drama set in that very space. The characters created by playwright Robert Harling have a wonderful depth that puts you right in the middle of a Saturday morning parlor visit, where conversation can heat up as fast as a curling iron. The cast is outstanding — each of them captures the essence of their character in funny, quirky, and many times very moving ways. In a beauty salon owned by Truvy (played by Ellen Dolan), the “regulars” who stroll through are about as close as friends get. Shelby (Meredith Riley Stewart) is the bride-to-be who wants baby’s breath in her hair for the “big day.” M’Lynn (Karen Ziemba) is Shelby’s mother, who won’t give up any of the juiciest gossip from the mental clinic where she works. Clairee (Kate McCauley Hathaway) and Ouiser (Marlena Lustik) are two customers who add color to

Ellen Dolan and Nicole Lowrance get together for girl talk in Steel Magnolias. the shop. Annelle (Nicole Lowrance) is the newbie in the shop, hired as the play opens. Each character brings something unique to the story. Karen Ziemba’s performance as M’Lynn is particularly notable, especially during a moving outburst in the fourth act. The character of Annelle goes through dramatic transitions throughout the entire play. In the beginning, the new hire is secretive and nervous. Truvy’s response (while

Annelle is out of the room), “I love the idea of hiring somebody with a past.” Annelle turns extroverted in act two, then religious, and finally settles with a blend of characteristics – and Nicole Lowrance plays each of four diverse changes beautifully. Harling wrote Steel Magnolias as a way to cope with the death of his sister, who was a diabetic. The play debuted in 1987, and the film version two years later was also successful. But if you’ve only seen the movie version, you will want to see this play as it was originally presented — with a core cast of six talented women in a simple story of love and support. The dialogue fluctuates from cutting humor to tender affection, and the strength and care women show for one another is beautifully portrayed. The set is fabulous in pink, beautifully designed and very well stocked to the last detail. The moment you enter the theater you feel like you’re in that Saturday morning free-for-all chat session. From wash and a blow dry to finishing curls, you’ll enjoy your time “at the shop” with this band of engaging, funny and resilient women.

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know that sea gulls are what the Devil made, the day God was resting? Yes, old Beelzebub snuck into God’s workshop at the back of His house and messed around with the tools of life for a few hours. That’s where sea gulls were first crafted. The Devil took all of the waste parts God had decided not to use on account of them being not quite right, mixed them all together, and instilled in them as much Evil as could be crammed into those tiny, wicked little heads. Then, in a final act of malice, The Prince of Lies coated his abominations in glue, ripped open one of Mrs God’s best pillowcases and threw the lovely feathery contents onto his sticky mess of a creature, thus giving sea gulls the appearance of healthy, clean, possibly even slightly cuddly birds. In his haste to escape when he heard Mrs God coming back in the house (possibly with a mind to air the bedclothes), the Devil fled before he could remove his mark from his awful thing, and left the wicked

beak and bloody red spot unmasked. Lucky for us: we can always identify such a thing of malice. So of course sea gulls are the source of most of the ills of society, as you can read in the Prophecies of Nastradamus (the slightly lesser known but immeasurably more gifted younger brother of Nostradamus), who made his home in our fine city and wrote the book Things That Shall Happen in Cape May Involving Fyre Bloode and Brimestone. At Which Point It Shalle Still Be Bettyr Than Wildewood.

Well, in that fine tome Nastradamus writes: “And in the end of dayse, shall come the Four Seagulls of the Apocalypse, to spread fear, sickness, death and annoyingly loud cawing noises in the morning when you are trying to sleepe. They should be met with fyre and sticks and the toes of stout boots.” With the Apocalypse in mind, and wishing to skew the odds in our favor before it all kicks off, I (and Young Albert and members of my household staff) have taken it upon ourselves to rid the city of that feathered menace. Albert uses his teeth and cunning, my faithful manservant Kitchener is up on the roof with a water-cooled Gatling Gun and I have my pearly-handled Colt 45s. I think we have made some progress, and have a heap of feathers that fills the East Wing of the D’Catur Mansion, but the seagulls are Evil and cunning and will strike back … they … oh hold on, who might that be knocking at the door at such a late hour, and so low down and loudly? I shall go and check, lest it be a traveler in distress. What an odd smell of fish, too…

The Washington Inn’s best-selling cookbook is back! Now with a hardcover and in full color! $19.95 Available at fine Cape May Retailers.... Exit Zero, Love The Cook, Whales Tale, Atlantic Books, Sunset Beach, Lucky Bones, Cape May Winery and, of course, The Washington Inn!

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: seagulls. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Note: Hints for some of these clues can be found in “Bird Droppings” on page 115. Across 4 . In The Birds, directed by this man, Tippi Hedren is first attacked by a sea gull. 7 . Sea gulls are __________, which means they mostly eat dead meat. 8 . Apart from size, the easiest way to tell sea gulls apart is to look at this. 11. Many outdoor eateries around town string this above their dining areas to keep the sea gulls away. 13 . Believe it or not, feeding this to a sea gull will not make it explode. 15 . This family of birds is closely related to gulls, and includes species like the Arctic and the Lesser. 16 . This 1982 single by Flock of Seagulls was a New Wave hit at the time. 22 . If you’re looking to learn more about sea gulls, you’ll want to visit this organization at the Point. First off, they’ll tell you that there’s no such thing as a sea gull.

“That sure was a nasty sea gull...” 4 Across.

23 . He’s considered the father of American ornithology. 24 . Some of the bones in sea gulls are this, making it easier for them to fly. 25 . Larger sea gulls have few predators, but in Cape May they had better watch out for this patriotic bird. Down 1 . When sea gulls lay eggs, they usually do so in this terrain – not on the beach. 2 . This 1973 film, based on a successful Richard Bach novella, featured an awardwinning soundtrack by Neil Diamond. 3 . This is the measurement in a straight line from one tip of a bird’s feathery appendange to the other (it also applies to airplanes). 5 . Seymore Thanu says juvenile birds of this species are “uniformly mocha colored.” 6. This body part on a sea gull bends in the opposite direction of its human counterpart. 9 . This is the largest species in its family. Seymore Thanu says they are “menacinglooking.”

10 . Birds are said to be the living descendants of this extinct group of animals. 12. This is the smallest bird in the family commonly seen on our beaches: it has a black head and could be considered jocular. 14 . Visitors to the shore, be advised: Do not ____ the sea gulls. You’ll just end up with a greedy flock and a lot of bird poop. 17 . The sea gulls in this animated film can only say one word: “Mine.” 18 . This Russian dramatist wrote The Seagull, a play about an ingenue, an actress, a playwright and an author on a country estate. 19 . This is the only gull species to nest exclusively in cliffs. It’s also the name of a WWII submarine and a part of the Newfoundland coast. 20. This isn’t a sea gull, but it is a very large seabird, and it’s practically the mascot of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. 21. During Thanksgiving of 2009, this snowy bird made a trip to Cape May all the way from Greenland.

Activity Of The Week

M

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sail on a Tall Ship

y NEPHEW Jake has developed a fascination with pirates. Treasure Island is mostly to blame, but an imbalance in the male-female cousin ratio contributed. The adventures of Jim Hawkins sound great when you’re the only boy in the beach house. The chance to be a “Sailor for a Day” on the schooner A.J. Meerwald provided an escape. The 1928 oyster schooner A.J. Meerwald is the sailing classroom of the Bayshore Discovery Project, a non-profit organization whose mission is to motivate people to care for the history, culture and environment of New Jersey’s bayshore region. Her home port is Bivalve in Cumberland County, but Utsch’s Marina in Cape May will be her port-of-call until September 2. The Meerwald’s crew assured me they are well trained and coast guard certified, so sailors are in good hands. “Sailor for a Day” is designed for children ages 10-16. “Sailor for a Day” programs are scheduled for August 24 and August 31. The cost is $70, and you have to bring your own lunch and water bottle. The group is out

from 9am to 4pm – time enough to learn navigation, knots and other nautical skills essential to pirates. Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1883 novel created most pirate stereotypes – peg legs, parrots and X-marked maps – and gave generations of children the language of adventure. Treasure Island was released in the

1880s, about 50 years before the Meerwald was built, and an oyster schooner may not have been the vessel of choice for Long John Silver, but that made no difference to a boy in search of adventure. Jake came home exhausted and eager to reread Treasure Island to check some facts. For example, sailing a tall ship is louder than he expected. The slap of the sails and the jingle of the rigging make a lot of noise. How much could Jim Hawkins really have overheard while hidden in that barrel? The kids don’t hog all of the fun – sailors of all ages can enjoy the Meerwald. There are public sails most days at 1:30pm ($40 adult, $20 child) and 5pm ($45 adult, $22 child.) There are also family sails on Saturdays at 10am and themed sails, including a Pirate Sail on August 27. Discounts are available for sailors over 60. Bring your own refreshments. Reservations are required and may be made online at bayshorediscovery.org or by calling Bayshore Discovery Project, 856-785-2060. Feed your pirate fascination with a sail on the Meerwald. Cody, a handsome six-year-old boy, came to our shelter after being surrendered by his owner for being a bit nippy. He’s really an obedient boy who knows some basic commands and loves to play fetch. All he really needs now is someone with a firm hand and training experience who will be willing to guide him and help him reach his full potential. Come and meet Cody today. Adoption fee is $35.

«

Bobby had an owner who was very upset over having to surrender him. It was discovered that he was protective of his family and would nip at people who came over to the house. Since he can get nippy we have decided that he should go to a home with older children. Hopefully he will be adopted by a family who will be willing to work with him and give him the love and patience he deserves. Adoption fee is $35.

«

Buddy had a family who brought him back to the shelter after almost three years. It was decided they could no longer handle him. All he needs is a firm hand and someone to be consistent with him. He plays rough and needs some training so he belongs in a home without small children. Please come to the shelter, meet him and make the next turn in his life one for the better. Adoption fee is $95.

Ashley is an extremely exuberant and sweet little calico kitten who is four months old. Just like any other kitten she is as playful as can be, loves to explore her surroundings and is so full of life. All she needs now is a home to call her own and a loving family to make her life complete. Adoption fee is $70.

«

Sooty is waiting here for a forever home. She’s an older, solid gray long hair cat. She’s a little shy at first, but with a little work, she could be a very loving companion. She doesn’t like to be picked up, but she loves a good pet. If you’re looking for an older long-haired cat, come on by the shelter and give her a chance! Adoption fee is $35

«

Humphrey is a very sweet boy that loves attention. Unfortunately, he’s FIV positive. This can only be spread to other cats, so you have nothing to worry about. This means, however, he has to be your only cat. If you’re looking for a very sweet and loving cat, stop by the shelter and give him a chance! Adoption fee is $8.

he Second Stage continues to bring the biggest names on Broadway to Cape May Stage. After the triumph of the Women of Broadway Series, we attempt to balance our program with some testosterone. Jarrod Spector of Jersey Boys brings his cabaret act here on Monday, August 29. His music director and accompanist has a day job as the conductor for Book of Mormon. Seeing artists of this quality in our intimate Robert Shackleton Playhouse is an experience not to be missed. Most patrons only see these performers in large venues, but Cape May audiences have an almost private showing. At the other end of the spectrum is our Shakesperience Summer Camp performing Twelfth Night this Saturday at 1pm at the Physick Estate on Washington Street. Our campers have had two weeks of intensive training to learn the art of speaking in verse and singing and dancing in Elizabethan style. They have learned stage combat and text analysis in a fun and supportive atmosphere. Audiences have been charmed beyond measure in past performances. Admission is complimentary. The hit of the season is Steel Magnolias and there are only three weeks left to reserve seats for performances that are selling out quickly. A stellar cast of Broadway veterans creates an ensemble that has everyone howling with laughter – when they are not moved to tears. Call 884-1341 or go online to capemaystage.com to order tickets. Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

t’s not much of a beach day, mostly overcast, so you decide to take a walk along the Cape May Promenade (we’d call it a boardwalk but there aren’t any boards on it). You get to the pavilion down by 2nd Avenue. You see a person inside wearing binoculars, peering through a spotting scope, looking out over the beach line. Since they aren’t many bikini-clad bodies on the beach, you safely assume – he’s a birder. You walk up slowly beside him and, just to be friendly, say, "Lots of sea gulls out there today." The response is a snicker, that leads to a guffaw, that ends in a snort. You're wondering what’s so damn funny and why is this guy acting like you just landed from Mars. Here's the source of his mirth: There is no such thing as a "sea gull." Gulls are simply "gulls." I know that this sounds like a silly, semantic thing, but to a birder, calling a gull a "sea gull" is like calling Tom Colicchio a cook (you do watch the Food

Network, don’t you?). Fact is, most gulls are more accurately "land" or "shore" gulls. With few exceptions, gulls are rarely seen at sea. And, many species of gull actually breed inland, away from the sea. They head for the coast for the winter. Why winter? Because gulls are beachcombers (scavengers) and the pickings in winter are good. One good winter storm

deposits enough clams and conchs on a beach to keep thousands of gulls fat and happy. The more gulls you have, the greater the chance of seeing an uncommon species, even a rare one. In 1975, a Ross Gull (a lipstick-colored gull that breeds in Siberia and usually spends the balance of its life picking through the slush along the edge of the Arctic ice cap) turned up in Newburyport, Massachusetts. And any birder who was within an airplane ticket of Cape May remembers the Ivory Gull that made a trip from its native Greenland to Cape May over the Thanksgiving holidays of 2009. Thousands of birders descend upon rarities like this. Birders (and chambers of commerce) love rare gulls. Okay, vacationing and loyal local Exit Zero readers, here's your challenge for the week. I want you to go down to the beach and “see gulls,” then identify three different species. You don't need binoculars. You don't even need a field guide. All you

Bird Droppings ? From Page 115 need to know is the difference between big, medium and small. The smallest gull species commonly found (and heard) on the beach in summer is the Laughing Gull. Just look for the gull with a black head. If you can't find one on the beach, you aren’t looking (or listening) very hard. Either that or you need a trip to the nearest vision and hearing specialist. The largest gull on the beach is the Great Black-backed Gull. It's a huge, menacing-looking bird. The head and breast of adults are bright white; the back, black. In the middle is the Herring Gull. If it doesn’t have a black head (like the Laughing Gull), or big black wings (like the Great Black-backed Gull), then it’s a Herring Gull. Young Herring Gulls are uniformly mocha colored. Chances are you'll see some birds that don't exactly match these description; birds that have a mix of traits. Chances are they are this year’s young. Leave them to the guy with the spotting scope. And don’t confuse them with the Least, Common and Forster’s Terns that some people like to lump into the general “sea gull” population. Totally unrelated. But

Herring Gull – one of many gulls on our beaches that can wait for another column. If you’d like some help on figuring out those gulls, consider going on a Cape May Bird Observatory Bird walk – there’s a few to choose from every week – and one every Monday morning at 7:30am with Pete Dunne. Or you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory and ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening throughout the week. They’ll be glad to help you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be

Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. The Movie Column

W

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, previews "Captain America"

elcome to the next generation of superhero movie. Captain America: The First Avenger may usher in a new era of super storytelling. But that’s only if writers can be heroes themselves, saving helpless stories from the evils of overdone special effects. This story starts during World War II with Steve Rogers, a scrawny guy, often bullied. He wants so badly to fight against Nazis that he fakes a handful of applications — only to be turned down each time for a laundry list of ailments. Rogers is played by Chris Evans, a bulky actor who through special effects is brilliantly shrunk in the first part of this movie to the puny would-be soldier. Rogers is befriended by a scientist, Dr Abraham Erskine (played by Stanley Tucci), who has invented a special serum that should create an army of super soldiers, and he has been looking for a first subject with depth of character (not just muscles). The experiment goes well, and Evans is transformed from skinny to his more natural superhero build. Then the experiment is sabotaged by German

Chris Evans in the effects-heavy Captain America spies, and Dr Erskine is killed along with any possibility of duplicating the serum. The new soldier’s first commission is far from the battlefield: he is enlisted to perform on stage for audiences across the US to sell war bonds. Once the performances go overseas to entertain troops, he gets a chance to be a true hero — saving several hundred soldiers

captured by forces of a deranged Nazi named Johan Schmidt (played by Hugo Weaving). It turns out Schmidt was a colleague of Erskine before the war, and he is the only other human to have had an injection of super serum. I’m an old superhero junkie from way back. It started with comic books, and then television shows. Then came Superman with Christopher Reeves… followed by a second one (which was better than the first – the series should have stopped there), then Batman. A free Cape May Film Fest weekend pass for the first person to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com with the name of the actor to play Batman opposite Jack Nicholson’s Joker (sorry, not Adam West). These heroes might be super, but story is still the ultimate weapon against horrible movies. The first third of Captain America was excellent — well written, interesting concepts, expert execution. Somewhere along the way, it becomes another shoot ‘em up without nearly as much finesse (but still worth seeing). Captain America will join fellow big screen stars Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor in a new movie next summer called The Avengers. Let’s hope they make the story super before anything else.

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

L

ately, all of my effort has gone into finding a job, so I’ve had very little time for finding a man. But job searching and dating are two pursuits not too far removed from one another. For starters, both can really stink. At the beginning, your standards are high. You’re convinced you’ve got a lot to offer, and you start looking for that perfect fit. The one you’ve been dreaming of. You’re eager and optimistic. You have all the faith in the world. You come across some prospects you can picture a future with, so you reach out to them. You don’t hear back from a couple at all, others shoot you down right away, and others still just want you around to make the coffee. You start to lower your standards just a bit. You decide what you’re able to compromise on. All of a sudden, you’re willing to accept less reward for more work. You’re even willing to relocate. You’re frustrated, because you never thought it would take this long. You’re about to jump on the first thing that comes along, because this dry spell is getting out of hand. Eventually, maybe online, you find something promising. You imagine how you stack

up against the other candidates, and you decide to go for it. You set up an initial meeting, and you fret about it. You wonder how much you need to sell yourself. Will they smell your desperation? And for the love of God, what do you wear? Your palms are sweaty. You fumble through the conversation. You try to make a joke or two just because you feel like you should. You leave having no idea how it went. Then you replay the whole thing in your head.

You berate yourself for smiling too much or not talking enough. Weeks later, you get an email saying you just aren’t quite right. It’s not you; it’s them. Keep trying, though, because, really, you’re so great. That makes you want to drink tequila until your face goes numb. Your friends tell you that you were too good for it, anyway. You feel pathetic doing it, but you start asking them for help. Don’t they know of anyone who might be looking? Nah, they say, all the good ones get scooped up right away. Your father wants to know how much longer this is going to take. Your mother insists you’re just not looking hard enough; no one else in the family had any trouble. Everyone seems convinced that your life would be much better if only someone would commit to you. You think this sometimes, too, but you don't believe it. Because you don’t need to be rescued. This is not going to be the thing that completes you. You’ll survive on your own a bit longer, and you’ll probably be better off for it. You’re not giving up on the one you’ve been dreaming about.

In the fall of 2001 I was told that I may never walk again. I am so grateful for the wonderful doctors and technology that have given me my life back. Others are not as fortunate. After my injury I researched different charities dedicated to spinal cord awareness. As an avid surfer, I was particularly interested in the Life Rolls On Foundation (www.liferollson.org). Life Rolls On (LRO) is a non-profit 501(c)3 Foundation that exists to be a grassroots resource and an advocate on behalf of young people who have sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI). Their tagline, “Instilling in people that life with SCI does indeed roll on.”

The Real Estate Column

W

Chris Bezaire on the latest trends and sales on the island

elcome back to Real Estate Rewind, a summary of all the transactions here on the island. The dog days of summer have arrived again and while the activity for showings has picked up, the total number of closings has slowed down a little while people try to beat the heat. There were a total of eight transactions here in the Cape in the last couple of weeks, so let's get to them. We start with 227 Beach Unit 302, a unit in the Capers building, which was listed by Justin Aftanis of Cape May Realty and sold by Brian Giancola of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles for $700,000. This was a very nice three-bedroom beachfront unit. Next we have 822 Stockton Avenue, which was listed and sold by Kim Dellas of the Dellas Agency for $539,000. We also had 9 Jackson Street Unit 501 that was listed by Kathy Hogarty of By the Sea Realty and sold by Carol “Flower Power” Anderson of Coastline Realty for $486,000. This is a great buy for a three-bedroom condo that has full ocean views. Also sold was a unique triplex property

at 721 Page Street that was listed and sold by Kathy Nace of Homestead for $410,000. Next we had 1120 Ohio Avenue, listed by Kevin Quinn of DeSatnick Real Estate and sold by Chris Ohrenich also of DeSatnick Real Estate for $385,000. Finally we had 1514 Yacht Avenue that was listed by some out-of-town agent and sold by Jim McBride of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles for $315,000. In West Cape May we had two transactions. First was 724 Park Boulevard, which was listed by Darcy Dickenson of Cape May Realty and sold by an agent in Wildwood for $240,000. Finally we have 129 Eldredge

Avenue, listed by Kathleen Williams of Wilsey Realty and sold by Grayce Kelleher of Century 21 Gil Martin for $417,000. Now on to the tip of the week. This week is for sellers. Make sure your property is well maintained and shows well from the outside. There is a reason there are half-hour TV shows dedicated solely to curb appeal. More often than not, people are going to drive by your property and if the outside looks good then they may want to come in and see the rest. If the outside is a turn-off, you can forget getting a showing no matter how good it looks on the inside. While they say you can't judge a book by its cover, buyers are definitely judging your house based on its curb appeal! If you have any questions on any of the transactions listed above or any other local properties please fell free to contact me. Until next time, go plant your toes in the sand! Chris Bezaire is a fifth-generation real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate in Cape May. He can be reached at 609-972-6927 or chris@capemaychris.com. Check him out on Twitter and Facebook: @CapeMayChris, Facebook.com/ capemaychris.

What is a land survey?

Sol Needles Real Estate

There are 2 types of land survey that you may need if you are buying or selling a property. A residential boundary survey which identifies the borderline of the property from corner to corner. A mortgage survey is used by lenders, title companies and other parties in a transaction to determine if improvements to a property, such as driveways, sidewalks, garages, decks or swimming pools have encroached the recorded borderline to an adjoining property. Encroachment issues could delay a closing.
