Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Bill Schemel of Mt. Ephraim, New Jersey. How long have you been coming to Cape May? For 15 years now. Who are you normally with? I’m usually with the family. Favorite thing about Cape May? Most everything — what’s not to like? We started out in Surf City and worked our way down to Cape May. Least favorite thing? That would be the parking. Favorite restaurants? Lucky Bones, the Merion Inn, the Lobster House, Harpoon Henry’s. Favorite place to stay? We have a permanent trailer at Seashore Campsites, so it’s nice, because we are really just 10 minutes from everywhere. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I like Cape May as is — no changes necessary. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Aleksey’s great photos. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Nothing... I read Exit Zero cover to cover. What’s your T-shirt size? I take a large, please.

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“The first farmer was the first man. All historic nobility rests on the possession and use of land.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson “Italians come to ruin most generally in three ways: women, gambling, and farming. My family chose the slowest one.”— Pope John XXIII “Writing is conscience, scruple, and the farming of our ancestors.” — Edward Dahlberg

COWS are like snowflakes, no two are exactly the same. Their spots are uniquely different on each cow. They produce seven gallons of milk each day, 2,100 pounds of milk each month, and 46,000 glasses of milk each year. And a cow can only produce milk after it has given birth to a calf.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... On The Farm Cocktail WE FOUND this recipe in Imbibe magazine. We think it would be a tasty thing to bring with you on a picnic. To a farm, perhaps. Maybe even on a picnic to Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May. They have that great hammock, after all, not too far from the blueberry fields...

Ingredients: 2 oz Organic Nation gin 3/4 oz organic lemon juice 1/2 oz organic cane-sugar simple syrup 3 organic cherry tomatoes 1 sprig organic tarragon dash orange bitters dash Angostura bitters Cracked ice *Combine ingredients, shake over ice, and serve in a chilled cocktail glass.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

The Case For Coverage

AT THE city council meeting last Tuesday, former Deputy Mayor Niels Favre took the podium. He hadn’t intented to speak, he told the board, but he just couldn’t help himself. An ordinance dealing with a potential lot coverage increase — from 30 to 40 percent — for the properties along Cape Avenue had been introduced earlier in the evening. “As many of you know,” he said, “I spent many years on a committee revamping our zoning laws. We did look at R1, particularly Cape May Avenue, and we felt that thirty percent was adequate. Once you approve the increase, you have no control over how people use it. Zoning is all about maintaining the character of the town. I think there are financial forces that would love to develop a town full of forty-story condominiums, but that’s not the Cape May we know and love.” That’s the argument of the naysayers… that a lot coverage increase would lead to a slew of Avalan-esque McMansions in our charmed city. If you want an addition to your home, you can apply for a variance, they say. And isn’t this really all just about swimming pools, anyway? Those who’ve been reading Exit Zero faithfully will remember that city council labeled “pool” a four-letter word in 2009, when they passed a not-in-the-Master-Plan ordinance that counted pools against your lot coverage. (This was the year Mayor Ed Mahaney barged into the backyard of a rented home on Maryland Avenue , calling the renters’ pool — the honeymooners’ pool, no less — a “violation” and prompting us to call him a dictator.) The lot size requirement in R1, according to City Engineer Craig Hurless is 9,375 square feet,

but if you’re only allowed to cover thirty percent of this, that doesn’t leave much room for a pool… at least not if you’d like, you know, a driveway. Some residents admit that swimming pools are a part of the incentive. “This is a vacation spot,” one Cape May Avenue homeowner told us. “Of course you’re going to want a pool here.” But other residents deny that’s the incentive. “I have a pool already,” resident Ron Tupper told us. “There are other reasons. I have neighbors who are elderly, and they would like to add to their first floor, because it’s gotten increasingly difficult for them going up and down stairs.” Tupper is the gentleman who hired Louis C. Dwyer, Jr. Esquire (“Mr Fix-it” when it comes to zoning, we’ve been told), after the planning board voted down the idea of increased coverage for all of R1 last year. In the interim, a compromise orchestrated largely by Mahaney, we’re hearing — increasing coverage for just the properties along Cape May Avenue — has been proposed. “I think the planning board had incorrect information initially,” Tupper told us. “This has nothing to do with floor area ratios, which is what dictates the size of your home. The FAR requirements and the setback requirements will remain the same.” We called Dwyer as well, who explained that this boils down to a fairness issue. “The 30% lot coverage is substantially less than any other zone in the municipality.” Which seems especially strange, considering that the lots here are actually larger than in most of Cape May. “You can actually have more coverage on a 7,500 square foot lot in an R2 zone than a 93,075 square foot lot in R1,” Dwyer said. Still, there must have been a reason it

was zoned this way in the first place… right? Dwyer didn’t know it. Tupper didn’t know it. Even the city engineer didn’t have an answer for us. “It’s historically just been that way,” he said. Which isn’t exactly a stellar endorsement for keeping things at 30%. Perhaps it was because of the trees, we considered, as Jay Schatz of the Shade Tree Commission had told us there will be 50 or 60 trees that are 80 inches or more in diameter adversely affected by the addition of patios and, of course, pools. He’s hoping to have more research done on in time for the August 14 meeting before the planning board, where the public will have an opportunity to comment. Following this, there will be a meeting before Council no August 21 in which, once again, the public will have an opportunity to comment. We’ve heard it suggested that Mayor Mahaney has orchestrated this compromise because it’s an election year, and he doesn’t want to lose the votes of prominent folks on Cape May Avenue. We’ve also heard it suggested that he’s advocated for a compromise out of the goodness of his heart. No matter what side of the fence you’re on, we recommend attending the upcoming meetings, because otherwise, you forfeit your right to complain when things don’t go your way.

Spiking It “I JUST couldn’t decide what to wear today,” said the girl who walked on to the beach next to us last Saturday. She’d decided on jeans and a sweater, and we wished we’d dressed that warmly, too. Overcast and breezy, this wasn’t the best beach weather, but the sand was still

The competition was stiff at the third annual Great American Volleyball Tournament in Cape May last Saturday Aleksey Moryakov

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 crowded. It was the day of the third annual Great American Volleyball Tournament, cosponsored by Cabanas and the city of Cape May, and the sounds of balls thumping against forearms filled the air. “I know he took it low,” we heard one refferee say, “but I don’t think the ball was lifted.” And then from another: “Either bring the blocker with you, or run a backset.” (Whatever that means.) These were players, we began to see, who, in between their own matches, took turns policing fourteen courts and sixty four teams — some professional, some ameteur, and some beginner. “Last year, there were only 52 teams,” said Payton Bowman, manager of Cabanas and a worthy competitor in the amateur division. “There are twelve more this year, and that’s after six teams cancelled because of weather.” Bowman tried to pop an Advil (“because us old guys need Advil”) and get back to his court, but we peppered him a few more questions. Like, just where did all of these sexy, bathing suit-clad atheltes come from? “As far as Washington DC, New York, and Virginia,” he told us. “Some play in college; there are representatives here from Penn State, Rutgers, all over.” And all for a chance to play on the sands of Cool Cape May. Well, that, and a chance at a chunk of the prize money... $3,000 in total. So it must get pretty competitive, we wanted to know? “Oh, there can be some trash talking,” Bowman laughed. Then he recommended we speak with Jim

Walls, because “this guy can answer all of your questions... He’s like the ambassador of volleyball in Cape May.” It shouldn’t be too hard to find the ambassador, we figured, so we made our way over to a canvas tent belonging to Mike Wilson of Cape May Fitness and asked if any of the folks camped out there had seen this ambassador. “He’s my best friend,” Wilson told us, “and he should be back any minute.” Turns out, the alternator in Walls’ wife’s car had failed, and he needed to run home to give her and their three kids a lift. In the meantime, Wilsonfilled us in on Walls’ workout routine. “We do beach volleyball drills at 5:30 in the morning,” he said, before adding, “You know, Jim never played volleyball in high school. He’s just a freakishly atheltic person.” There seemed to be a lot of freakish athletics happening around us at this point. On the court directly in front of us, the serves of a Cape May-stationed member of the Coast Guard named Zach Walden were sending his opponents diving, in vain, headfirst into the sand. Turns out, this guy had been invited to play in the World Military Olympics, and then on Team USA, which finished fifth in the world. “Put that in the article,” Walden joked after his game, “and it will drive Jim crazy.” (Obviously, Bowman had been right about the playful trash-talking thing.) “But seriously,” Walden said, “Jim’s one of the best volleyball players to come out of New Jersey.” About this time, Walls made his way on to the beach, and we were able to corner him for a minute before he needed to be on the court. He told us that he’d had many

opportunities to work on Wall Street after he graduated from Fordham University, but that he decided to pick up beach vollebyall and move to Fourt Lauderdale, where he played professionally for four years, until 2003. It was the late Andy Boyt who’d turned him on to the sport, and “it seemed like a pretty cool lifestyle.” Now, Walls works as a mortgage banker and part-time commodoties trader, but still finds time to compete in about three tournaments a year. “It can get pretty intense on the court,” he said, “but this is one of the friendlier tournaments. There’s great sportsmanship here.” He and his teammate, Brian Soldano, ended up taking second place overall, after losing one game to two in the finals, in a competition that lasted until 7:30 that night. That’s ten-and-a-half hours of volleyball. We didn’t make it until the end, but we did call Walls afterward to find out how it went. “For me,” he said, “this tournament is great because that’s the beach I pretty much learned to play volleyball on, and I have a lot of good memories growing up. But even more than that, everyone who comes to this tournament ends up saying, ‘I can’t beleive how nice the beach is and how beautiful the town is.’ That’s what separates this spot from everywhere else. Cape May is just such a beautiful place.” Until next year, don’t forget to bring your blocker with you, or to run a backset, Cape May. Whatever that means.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14

Singer Songwriter Spotlight

JOHN BYRNE is 40 years old (he told us somewhat reluctantly, until he found out we were older), and he’s been living in the US since his early twenties. Yet, you can still hear the Old Sod of his native Ireland in his voice when you talk to him, as we recently did. The John Byrne Band is next in the lineup of the Singer Songwriter showcase being brought to you until the end of August from the good folks at Singer Songwriter Cape May and Congress Hall. Each Wednesday night around 8:30, the event kicks off with an Open Mic, hosted by Don Shaw, and is followed by a featured singer songwriter. Think of it as a little preview of the annual spring event, which gotten bigger every year. So we had to ask: does the John Byrne Band play “Irish music?” And he chuckled, “Well, it’s funny you should ask that. When I was growing up in Ireland, I was hugely influenced by American folk music — I mean, really strongly. Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Mississippi John Hurt. And the Traveling were a total game-changer for me. Yet I kept writing all these sad songs in 3/4

time... I guess the lesson here is that you can’t escape who you are.” And while the band’s music definitely has an inescapably Irish vibe, we’re here to tell you that if who you are is the kind of guy who produces a song like “It’s A Gas That Makes You Laugh Before It Kills You,” from 2010’s debut album “After The Wake,” no escape is necessary. Excellent story-telling, solid musicianship — it’s the reason people listen to singer songwriters in the first place, wouldn’t you say? Based in Philadelphia, where he was a teacher at an alternative school for eight

years, John has now made the band his fulltime gig. “I was doing it on the side for a long time, but found myself having to turn down chances to tour and to play, so....” And touring and playing they are — they’ve been all over the US — Denver was a favorite stop — and are headed to Ireland in November (wanna go? Check www.johnbyrneband. com for specifics). They’ve also sold out the World Cafe venue in Philly four times. And he’s been to Cape May before, too. “The John Byrne Band opened the Boiler Room for us this year to celebrate St. Paddy’s weekend,” Congress Hall’s entertainment director, Myra Vassian tells us. “And I’m thrilled that he and the band are returning this summer with original music. If you love Irish music, they’re sure to please, but be ready for so much more than an Irish jig or a sing-along! John’s lyrics speak to contemporary life questions, and the melodies haunt and linger long after the set has ended.” So while it’s not as far-flung as the Emerald Isle, is John excited about returning to Cape May? “I’m really looking forward to it. We had a blast at Cape May Brewery earlier this year, and we love the Boiler Room. I’ll take any excuse to get to Cape May.”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16

Down On The Farm (Market) SO WE’VE seen you at the West Cape May Farmers Market, haven’t we? Maybe that was you picking up your fresh-from-thefarm veggies, jamming to some live music, enjoying a piping hot empanada or some made-30-seconds-ago donuts while browsing the vendors’ booths, perhaps....? Buying a Flying Fish shirt, eating some pulled-pork barbecue, or cooling off with some Bliss Homemade Organic ice cream? All of the above? (Try the donuts and the ice cream together. Just a thought. But eat your veggies first.) The what the heck should we do on Tuesday afternoon? quandary has been roundly solved, as any savvy Cape May lover knows, by the West Cape May Farmers Market, which has become a summer destination event in these parts, running for 10 weeks each year on Tuesdays from 3-7:30pm, rain or shine. Plus, as West Cape May mayor Pam Kaithern told us, “It’s the best reason ever not to cook on a Tuesday.” (Well, that wasn’t all she said about it, but for some reason, that sentiment really stuck with us.)

The Farmers Market actually began around 11 years ago, but it’s only been in its current incarnation for the last few. “It used to be in the front parking lot, but we kept looking at the recreation area behind the hall,” Mayor Kaithern says. “Together with the Public Works Department, we worked to create a backyard park. We put down sod, we made it handicapped-accessible, we paved it and put in a gazebo. And then you have the whole ‘Well, we built it, will they come?’ scenario,” she continues. Came they did, and they continue to do so in droves. “The great thing about it is there’s a nice mix of locals and tourists,” Kaithern says. “It’s just a great community attraction, with emphasis on the ‘community.’ We have more farmers now than ever, including an organic one, our vendors return year after year, and the music has become a huge focal point.” (The music starts at 5pm, folks; it’s free, it’s consistently good, and if you were just stopping by to pick something up and decide to stay for some tunes, the Farmers Market will even provide you with

a blanket to sit on.) We spoke with Sue Lotozo, owner of Flying Fish Studio, who is one of those many returning vendors to the Famers Market. Between her shop on Park Boulevard and her satellite location at West End Garage, we had to wonder what the motivation was for yet another place to... work. “It’s a great way for me to sell retired designs at really attractive pricing,” Sue told us. (Reporter’s note: “really attractive” means “five bucks, three for $12.”) “I may have shirts of a particular design that I’m phasing out, or a bunch of shirts that I only have in small or double XL sizes, for instance, and I can just sell them at the Farmers Market rather than have a bunch of “sale” items in the store during the summer months. Customers also get a coupon they can use in the store.” So, we asked, is it a drag to leave work to go to... more work? “No, I love the market,” Sue told us. “I get to see all the people, hear some great music, and it’s really like a family night out for us. Plus, I don’t really work there — I make my kids do it.”

PARTING SHOT

Cape May might just be the greatest place in southern New Jersey to bike — we get that. But what is with the canvas/plastic/mesh seats for kids meant to attach to the back of your bike? Even if you’re being as careful as possible... they just don’t seem that safe. God forbid you get rear-ended. And recently, we’ve seeen parents weaving in and out of traffic pretty haphazardly. It’s best to be extra cautious with precious cargo on board, folks.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

B

EFORE you get all excited about my return, keep in mind that I do three things these days; Ghost Ship, Terry O’ke and sleep (in descending order). So if you thought my column was insular BEFORE (nothing but Elaine’s, my kids and Will Knapp…. DING!), get a load of it now! Awkward O’ke of the Week: The two 50-something couples who came down to Kiddy O’ke last Sunday in the Boiler Room and requested “Jersey Girl” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” Um… yeah… it’s… for... kids. BUT… after they informed me they had extended their stay in Cape May in order to attend karaoke, I didn’t have the heart to send them away. And let me tell you, there is nothing so confused as a seven-year-old trying to figure out what “Thunder Road” is all about. Kiddy O’ke is a total blast. And after balloon artist Rachel “Raye” Teyssier hands out all her balloon swords, the show takes on a subtle Hunger Games aspect. Entertaining. And a little scary. Speaking of Raye (who survived getting hit by the great Nor’Easter on Surfside Pier in

2010), she’s heading up Wheeling for Wells, in conjunction with Charity Water, to build wells in Africa and Southeast Asia. To get involved and assauge your liberal guilt, go to charitywater.org/wheelingforwells2012. It involves biking. So I’ll be making a cash donation. Although I am, indeed, the undisputed (hotly disputed) heavyweight (watch it…) champ of all karaoke hosts, I do encourage you to go out and support my fellow local KJs; Jimmy J. at the Ugly Mug and Bayshore Inn, and Shannon Vail at Carney’s. Notice I’m not telling you WHEN to go out and support them (I have to be a LITTLE bit of a dick about it) but support them you should. Then come back and tell me how awesome I am!

Later this year we’re having a KJ steel cage death match to decide once and for all who’s mightiest. I’m deep into training; spinning my mouse wheel aimlessly, fielding customer complaints about that song I don’t have (it’s never the 14,000 songs you DO have, it’s the one you DON’T), and ignoring complaints. You should also go out and support other local musicians — ex-Southwind legend Rose Kelley has been playing all over town, and Barry Tischler’s Friday open mic at the Pilot House has become a must-see event. There is also the harder-driving Man Cave Monday at the Shamrock in Wildwood. Cape May for James Taylor-ish strumming, Wildwood for AC/DC-like thrashing. Popped into The Brown Room last Sunday and caught Amanda Snow, who crafts beguiling acoustic versions of non-acoustic songs (personal fave: “Back in Black” by Amy Winehouse) and delivers in a lilting alto. And I had quite the Gatsbyesque 90 minutes in the Brown Room that evening after Kiddy O’ke (7-9:30). Met up with Jack Wright, Fiona Hutchison from God of Carnage, currently run-

ning at Cape May Stage, sipped a cool Absolut martini and engaged CMS Artistic Director Roy Steinberg in an intriguing conversation about… well, why spoil the intrigue? My favorite part of returning to Exit Zero? These little sojourns now count as “research.” There are few people on this earth that arouse in me more conflicted feelings than Jen Dowe. While she is a very pretty nice lady who brings a terrific level of energy to Terry O’ke, she is also a relentless pain in the balls. Jen, in order for you to be next, somebody must go before and after you. It’s physics! (I’m going to pay for that one…) Thank You Cape May of the Week: The city conveniently scheduled Movies on the Beach on Thursdays, directly against Kiddy O’ke at the Boiler Room. Annoying Phrase of the Summer: “YOLO!” Yes, it’s shorthand for “you only live once”, which is fine, but not when it’s printed on a million neon tank tops and shouted incessantly by the hundreds of kids that run through Ghost Ship every day. While quite annoying, it’s nowhere near as bad as last year’s “Come at me, bro,” which I believe is a Jersey Shore-ism, and the proliferation of vuvuzela horns that accompanied the 2010 World Cup (soccer, really?). And I can assure you of this; if you yell “Come at me, bro!” at a Ghost Ship zombie, they will indeed come at you. Ferociously. And probably with a sledgehammer. Unhealthy Obsession of the Week: Jewels Legend on my Android. Moderately Unhealthy Obsession of the Week: “Kids” by MGMT. How am I just discovering this awesome song? Healthy Obsession of the Week: I am seven months McDonald’sfree, so if your shares have plummeted since January 1, I apologize. I haven’t lost a ton of weight or anything (about 20 lbs on the year, mostly attributable to running around Ghost Ship) but did a little math and realized I was eating Mickey Ds about 75-100 times a year (once a week with the boys, another couple times in a hurry, on the road). Now, if I can

just keep avoiding Fritz’s fries on the pier, where they serve freshcut boardwalk fries and the best chicken fritters I’ve ever had. It’s $5 and literally 30 feet in front of Ghost Ship. For a fat guy, that’s an awfully bad combination. Anyone catch the vicious Facebook feud between Cape May Good Times and Cool Cape May? It was like the Jets v the Sharks. Only gayer. (Ha! Still happy I’m back, Ben Miller?) If you were at the Beach Shack this Tuesday, you had the rare privilege of hearing me sing some tunes with the Cape May Diamonds (thanks Ric Rutherford, of Rio Station and longesttenured employer of Terry O’ke). I would have promoted this in last week’s Undertow but… I’m still a little rusty at figuring out where I’m going to be 11 days from now. Cape Atlantic Book Company (upstairs in the indoor mall on the outdoor mall) is now selling (and selling quite well, I might add) my short story collection, Murder-Oke! & Other Spooky Cape May Tales. While it hasn’t had the instant, continued success of Ben Miller’s The First Resort, or anything else written by anyone at any time ever, it continues to plug along, as evidence by my steadily increasing EZ royalty checks ($17, $37, $46… by 2025 it’ll be up to $100!). For three years that stupid check was my only contact with EZ. I’d hold it up to the light, caress it ever so gently, rub it on my cheek. Sometimes I could smell a little Jack Wright on it (Aqua Velva and an Old Fashioned). Mt Rushmore Moment of the Week: EZ journalistic titan Terry O’Brien running into EZ advertising manager Jason Black, along with wife Colleen, kids Dakota, Jasmine, Frankincense and Myrrh (I think) on the Mariner’s Landing pier last Wednesday. Jason was decked out in EZ gear from head to toe (except his underwear… I assume) headed home from Raging Waters, and I was in full zombie mode about to start my 11-hour shift. Guess which guy I wish I was at that moment? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

R

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Diane Stopyra

ECYCLING, and lot coverage, and bond ordinances... oh my! Fasten your seatbelts, folks, it was a short meeting, but there was more going on at City Hall on July 17 than on the dance floor at Carney’s on Eastern Eurpoean Night. 7:03: Call to order, Pledge of Allegiance, roll call and all that jazz. Councilmember Deanna Fiocca is absent. 7:04: It’s now time to discuss ordinances for introduction, says Mayor Ed Mahaney, who’s wearing a baby blue button-up, a hunter greenish-blackish tie, and an olive green jacket. (Strange color combination, we know, but it works). City Clerk Louise Cummiskey, wearing a black dress with big white polka dots, reads Ordinance 255. If passed, the city would be amending section 525-14 of the Cape May City book of code. What does that mean? Read on to find out! 7:05: Cummiskey calls the roll, and everyone votes yes. Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman, in a red, collared button-up that brings out the rosiness in his cheeks, adds a dis-

claimer. “I’m voting yes,” he says, “but this doesn’t mean I’m in favor of. This is just a motion to introduce it, so that we can have further discussion.” Further discussion about what, exactly? We know... the suspense was killing us, too. Read on to find out! 7:06: Mayor Mahaney finally explains: “This is simply the ordinance that talks about increasing the coverage of lots that face Cape May Avenue in the R1 zone from 30 percent to 40 percent.” He explains that comments from the public will be entertained at a meeting from the Planning Board on August 14, and also at

a meeting of council on August 21. Councilmember Bill Murray, in a sea-foam button-up and khaki pants, reiterates that comments will be entertained at these upcoming meetings. “I just want to make sure everyone understands,” he says. (Remember this, folks… it will be the topic of discussion later on.) 7:07: Deputy Mayor Wichterman says, “Maybe you guys can explain this to me: When you folks on the planning board approved this, you approved that it melded with the Master Plan, correct?” The mayor, who serves on the planning board, explains that they “merely made a reccommendation to city council by a majority vote that this suggestion come before the governing body, and be crafted as an ordinance for consideration.” Wichterman seems satisfied. 7:08: It’s now time for an Ordinance for Consideration and Adoption! Tonight, it’s 252-2012. Cummiskey says that “this is a bond ordinance providing for various capital approvements of the city of Cape May appro-

priating the aggregate amount of $2,080,0002 therefore, and authorizing the issuance of $1,425,000 in bonds or notes of the city to finance the costs thereof.” The mayor explains that council “has already passed this ordinance once,” but asks that City Manager Bruce MacLeod go over “the possible inconsistency that occurred” that’s led to a doover. MacLeod is wearing a white, short-sleeve buttonup with a tie. Your reporter thinks that ties should be worn only with longsleeve shirts, but this is beside the point. “In bond council’s review,” MacLeod says, “they realized in fact that an error had occurred at their end.” Apparently, these folks sent the wrong notices of publication (tsk, tsk!), and so council must vote again “for the purposes of getting it correct this time around.” Always a noble goal. MacLeod emphasizes that the general capital projects that were initially included in this bond ordinance — the annual road program, for instance — have not changed in any way. 7:13: The mayor says that “with the permission of council,” he’d like to digress slightly. He wants MacLeod to pat the city on the back… er… we mean “discuss for the benefit of the public how much financial planning and frugality goes into our budget and planning process so that we get the best possible rates.” MacLeod says that the “gross total from the sale of bond anticipation notes was $22,745,000 in notes to be issued.” Over $15 million of this was comprised of general capital projects. He explains that even though the city has “sold a larger amount of debt” this year, “we actually received a better overall net interest rate this time around.” (That’s .417 percent, as opposed to last year’s .722, for those of you paying attention.) 7:14: Deputy Mayor Wichterman congratulates MacLeod

on a job well done. 7.15: The mayor says that people are probably most interested to know about the chunk of general capital money that was applicable to the construction of Convention Hall, since the public was told that bond anticipation notes would be used to fund this, until the fall of 2013. “Just about half of that figure is the convention hall project,” says MacLeod. 7:16: It’s time for resolutions! “Three or four deal with the same thing,” says Wichterman... 175 is a resolution Adopting the State Model Citizen Participation Plan for DCA Small Cities Program. Deputy Mayor Wichterman says the city is an applicant for a Department of Community Affairs grant that would establish mobility barriers for Carpenter’s Lane and other locations, bringing them into compliance with ADA (Americans With Disabilities Act) regulations. So what’s the State Model Citizen Participation Plan? Stay tuned! 176 is a resolution identifying a Small Cities Fair Housing Officer. “There are various things to which we have to comply,” says Wichterman, per the ADA grant, “and Louise will be the one to watch over the fact that we watch over them.” There is a pause, before the mayor says, “Congratulations, Louise.” Is that sarcasm, we sense? 177 is a resolution approving the submission of FY 2013 Small Cities public facilities application, which says the city has the authority to apply for the aforementioned grant. 178 is a resolution approving a public facility grant management plan, “to define project staffing and project activities.” 179 is a resolution for a closed

session meeting “to deal with collective bargaining, and it’s with the fire department.” 180 is for the payment of bills. Wichterman turns to Councilmember Terri Swain and says, “Are you okay, because you just bought a new guitar?” Your reporter is miffed that she’s not in on the inside joke. 181 is a resolution endorsing the proposed switch to singlestream recycling. Wichterman says that “at our last council meeting, we had a gentlemen from the Cape May County MUA make a presentation” on the advantages of single stream. You will no longer have to separate your glass form your plastics, he says! And he adds that “it will be beneficial for not just the county, but for the city of Cape May which, of course, we’re most interested in.” Well, yea... but are we supposed to say that out loud? 182 authorizes the purchase of a new 2013 Chevy Silverado truck. “I assume we have that in our budget?” Wichterman asks. “Yes, yes,” says MacLeod, so you know he means it. 183 fixes the delinquency of taxes due for the third quarter of 2012. “Hopefully the papers will pick this up,” Wichterman says. And we are! “The city will accept all payments for the 2012 third quarter tax collection through August 21 without a late interest fee being charged,” he explains. “After that, you’re going to pay a

fee over and above your taxes.” 184 reduces the price of the contract for the roofing that was done on City Hall because they “did not have to put downspouts in.” The city will save $10,107.40.” Your reporter calculates that this is enough to buy a girl 6,738.27 leaner wieners at HotDog Tommy’s. Or 3,260.45 Big Bad Dogs. (That’s the all beef Black Angus kind, for those of you paying attention.) 7:22: The mayor asks if there are any comments from the public and Shaine Meier (who slices the meat for the Exit Zero pups at West Side Market) asks for clarification on the State Model Participation Plan. City Manager MacLeod says “these are basically guidelines and rules that would require us to hold public meetings for citizens.” The purpose is to encourage folks “to comment on projects both in a preliminary format and also in a post matter, to comment on, I guess, whether they thought it was completed favorably.” That’s cool. We guess The mayor explains that this is the fifth year the city will be using “this particular funding stream to meet the ADA requirements on the beachfront and in the mall area.” 7:28: Now it’s time to accept the minutes! 7:29: Now it’s time to receive reports! 7:30: Unfinished business! Drum roll, please… there’s none. 7:31: Time for new business. City Solicitor Tony Monzo says the City of Cape May was named as a beneficiary in the estate of late Cape May resident Edward Ross, and that “this distribution is for $80,000.” Monzo has been trying to contact Ross’ attorney “to see what process is.” Wichterman, that jokester, says, “I think Mr Ross wanted to buy a raffle ticket on a the Kiwanis car.” Oh, you. The mayor adds that he would like to know what intentions Mr Ross had for the money, specifically, because it would be a shame for the money go into the general

Thursday, July 26, 2012 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 54 fund, if this man had something different in mind. Then he says to Monzo, “That was good. If you could do that every meeting, we might have less of a budget problem.” Womp, womp. 7:33: City Manager MacLeod reads off some of the upcoming activities in town, including the bandstand concerts that will be playing at Rotary Park, like the Cape Harmonaires. But, wait a minute! “That was last week’s,” says the sayor. “Oh,” says MacLeod. “Let me get on the right week here.” While he shuffles through papers, the Mayor tries coming to his aid. “All three of those bands were excellent,” he says. Well played, mayor. Then Wichterman, a member of the Harmonaires jumps in. “We had a great crowd last week,” he says. MacLeod is still confused, so the mayor adds, “I think the point you’re making, Bruce, is that from now until Labor Day there is a band concert every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, and they’re free, and I think both our residents and visitors appreciate it very much.” Mahaney, you sly dog. 7:36: “Talk about free,” says councilmember Terri Swain, wearing a black sweater over a green top, “there’s movies on the beach. We just had our first run with Jurassic Park last week, and it’s a lot of fun. There were about four hundred people on the beach. I welcome everyone to be there on Thursday nights.” 7:38: Wichterman gives an update on the school tax saga — why Cape May residents are paying so much to send so few students to attend the local high school. So far he’s petitioned nine municipalities in similar situations because “there’s strength in numbers,” and he’s received five positive responses. (Still waiting on you, West Cape May!) “I’m sure I’m going to get the rest of them,” he says, “because I’m not going to give up on this.” Hopefully, there will be a meeting to

plan a strategy for getting Trenton’s attention around the end of August. 7:42: Councilmember Bill Murray says that the Stockton series shows on Monday nights have been “exceptional,” including the recent performance of comedian Robert Klein. “And in case you didn’t know,” Murray says, “Mr Klein is here, disguised as Mr Wichterman; he’s our resident comedian.” Annnnd, your reporter thinks it’s a good thing that Mr Murray is not a comedian. 7:45: Mayor Mahaney thanks the county health department and state health department for co-sponsoring the fourth annual check your cover skin cancer screening that took place last Saturday at Convention Hall. “There were several people found to have issues that need to be addressed by their family dermatologists,” he said. “It was very heartwarming to see that recognized.” Your reporter was thinking more “terrifying” than “heartwarming,” but to each his own. Mahaney also comments on what a success the Lifeguard Superathalon was. “This is the kind of event we love to have in the city.” 7:46: It’s now time for the public portion. Shaine Meier takes the podium. “I have received information that Convention Hall was operating without a Cer-

Tony Monzo explains that there have been three temporary certificates issued and that there was a gap between the time the administrative decision was made to issue the third one, and the time the paperwork went through. Meier asks if there was, in fact, a certificate for the concert held on July 9. “Yes,” says Monzo. (Hmmm… we believe the answer you were looking for is actually “no.” Intending on obtaining a TCO is not the same as actually obtaining a TCO. The same as your reporter’s intention of jogging off all her summer lunches from HotDog Tommy’s is not the same as actually jogging them off.) 7:46: A representative from the Knights of Columbus asks if the city will be providing transport for their annual Blessing of the Sea ceremony, as they did last year, and the Mayor assures him they will do everything they can to make this a wonderful community event. 747: Niels Favre, former Deputy Mayor, says that he came to this meeting with his grandson, who is working on his community citizenship merit batch, and that he didn’t intend to speak... until he saw that pesky ordinance for introduction on the agenda. He

thinks that increasing lot coverage is a bad idea, as “zoning is all about maintaining the character of the community.” When he was on council, “we did look at R1, and we decided not to make the change.” The mayor thanks Favre, and says his comment was “very well spoken.” 7:50: Kim Russell takes the podium to comment on the same issue, but the mayor stops her. “I’ll give you your five minutes… but we’re not really entertaining comment on that ordinance.” Your reporter can’t help but remember the Kanye West/Taylor Swift Grammy debacle of 2009. (“I’m gonna let you finish, but…”) Russell is not happy about this! “Well, I believe Mr Favre…” she starts, before being interrupted by the mayor. “I just want to say

that whatever you say tonight will not be taken into account by this board on legal advice and it will not be part of the record.” Russell is still not satisfied! “So why is he allowed to give his opinion?” she asks again. The mayor responds: “He just spoke from his history as a person, you know…. if you want to speak, I’m going to let you speak, I’m just letting you know it’s not going to be a part of the decision making.” Mahaney defers to Monzo, who backs him up. This goes on for a while, back and forth, until the mayor chastises Russel for coming in late. “If you had been here at the 7pm start, you would have known we are not entertaining comment on this. I really don’t want to have a situation where we have people in here in a couple of weeks who feel this body has had a prior hearing on this.” Plus, he says, “you’re represented by an attorney.” Then the conversations follows along these lines for a bit: No, I’m not… Yes, you are… No, I’m not… Yes, you are. After a bit, the mayor tells Russell that her five minutes are nearly up. “Well, since you sucked up all of my time,” she says, “I’ll wait until the next meeting.” And then the conversation follows along these lines for a bit: No, I didn’t… Yes, you did… No, I didn’t. And nenee-ne-nee-poo-poo. Until next time, stay cool, Cape May.

The Movie Column

S

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

O, IF you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a writer. Well, I write this column — that much you know, but I’ve actually been in love with writing since I was a teenager (which unfortunately now is longer ago than I’d like it to be). Sure I could have been a doctor, a lawyer, a barber, a convict, a cop — I could have been any of those things. But if I have to say I’ve chosen one particular path over all the others, it would be that I’m a writer. And because as a writer, I can be a doctor, a lawyer, a barber, a convict, and a cop, with the right level of research (and of course imagination). That said, I also like fantasy stories that are based in reality. Sorry, not much of a Lord of the Rings guy — that’s a little too much fantasy. But I have an infatuation with (and perhaps an admiration for) movies like Groundhog Day (1993) that are fantastical but based in real life. Combine these two interests, and it’s no surprise that I like movies about the writing life that are also fantasies. For example,

Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan star as lovers in the saga of a struggling writer, Ruby Sparks one of my favorite movies in this crossgenre is Stranger than Fiction (2006) with Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, and Queen Latifa. It’s a great writer’s f lick about an IRS agent (Ferrell) who finds out that he is actually the main character within the new manuscript of a struggling novelist (Thompson). Completely loved the film — it’s in my list of top 20 films, but it is because I’m a writer with an affinity towards this type

of fantasy. Someone else might think it is just a so-so film. Now we have a new entry into this cross-genre. It is Ruby Sparks, a new film about a struggling writer (played by Paul Dano) who creates the love of his life within the pages of a new creation — and then the lover comes to life (by way of Zoe Kazan)! The two actors are a complete delight to watch. Dano is one of my favorite young actors, you should remember him as the son in Little Miss Sunshine (2006) who takes a vow of silence until he is accepted into the Air Force to f ly jets. This film comes from the same directors, and it is as entertaining as it is poignant. Mind you, it may not get to the level of poignancy as Stranger than Fiction (and poignancy plays big into how much I’m going to like a film like this), but it is definitely far above average. Join us this Friday, July 27, at the Chalfonte Hotel, as we continue our summer series with Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1942)! Call or text for details: 609326-FEST (3378).

Victor Grasso Is Back His startling new SOMA show opens August 4

Victor Grasso’s new show comprises three different concepts, including a dark, compelling series of monochromatic self-portraits

I

T’S one of the highlights of Cape May’s cultural calendar... a new art show by Victo Grasso. The artist’s highly anticipated new exhibit will open at SOMA NewArt Gallery on Saturday, August 4. The new show, “Somewhere, Beyond The Sea,” draws its inspiration from the deepest depths of the ocean. Working in his unique hyper-realistic style, and drawing from sources as diverse as literature and mythology, Grasso’s new work is at once haunting yet startlingly beautiful. In Gallery One, “The Nemo Project,” inspired by the epic

Jules Verne classic, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, with a nod to Melville’s Moby Dick, is a series of four monochromatic paintings. Grasso is at his explosive best as he chronicles a thrilling tale of an elusive sea beast which is captured, put up for bid, and sold, the sea-hunter reveling in his reward and concluding in a narcissistic fantasy world filled with twisted witticism and folie de grandeur. Every piece in “The Nemo Project” is a self-portrait that allows Grasso to play director, actor, and writer. In February of this year, the

Grasso’s stunning self-portraits conjure up images of Jules Verne... and Ed Wood movies “The Angler” and “I Used To Be A Planet,” both of which evoke the notion of relics washed ashore, found treasures full of texture and depth. In Gallery Three, Grasso exhibits selfportraits executed for the first time in mixed media. They combine varied materials particular to Cape May, with work Grasso has done over six years painting the covers of Exit Zero. The covers torn from the actual

When asked to participate in this select group show of 19 national artists Grasso answered the call with “Drink Me”, an awe-inspiring, six-foot photo-realistic painting of Alice. The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush

«

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is Dannica Walters, who was ambushed on the Washington Street Mall. What are you doing here? It’s my day off from work at the Mad Batter. What’s your favorite thing about Cape May? The friendliness of the people. It reminds me of my home, which is Jamaica. What are you up to today? I’m headed to the beach, even though it’s really too damn hot, then dinner tonight at Jackson Mountain. When is the last time you got flowers? On my birthday, which was just on the 14th. These are awesome! PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I are splitting up. Of course it’s terrible, but I know we’ll come out of it okay, and that we’ll always be friends. We are selling our house and have each found a new place to live, and for some reason, here is where I’m hitting a wall. I don’t want to part with my things! I can’t take everything, but I’m having a hard time deciding between such simple things as this lamp or that one, for crying out loud. What the heck is wrong with me? — Separation Anxiety Dear Sister The Answer Lady is sorry about your impending divorce, but glad to hear you and your soon-to-be ex are being civilized about it — it warms the cockles of the Answer Lady’s stony little heart. You answered your own question: keep reminding yourself that

tionship with your ex. The rest is simply a matter of eeny-meeny-miny-mo. P.S. Have a yard sale! The Answer Lady’s sister will surely stop by to relieve you of some of your extraneous things.

these are “things.” Things are wonderful, frankly. For instance, the Answer Lady is a big fan of West End Garage, a lovely building filled with awesome things — really, really awesome things. (And her feelings about central air-conditioning, another awesome thing, have bordered on pornographic these past few weeks, but the Answer Lady digresses.) Things make life easier, things make life more fun, but people and experiences are what make life... life. Focus on your new path and sustaining a good rela-

Dear Answer Lady I want more. I don’t want to be comfortable, I want to be fabulously wealthy. I don’t want to be thin, I want to be supermodel thin. I don’t want to fall in love, I want to be swept off my feet by Prince Charming and live happily ever after. Is any of this stuff really achievable? — Dreamer Dear Dumper The Answer Lady would like you to get a grip, dear. She’s not saying one shouldn’t strive for more — one definitely should. But one should also be realistic, for heaven’s sake. What you are describing here sounds like a Lifetime movie based on a novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford (Google her if you don’t know what the Answer Lady is talking about). And while Barbara Taylor Bradford novels are enjoyable, they are not a blueprint for life. As the song says, it’s not having what you want, it’s wanting what you have.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Ryan Harris and I visiting from Pennsylvania. What are you doing here? I am here for a family reunion. An uncle of mine has a rental so I am heading over there right now for a barbecue. But last night my family and I went to the Lobster House for dinner, and it was so great. What were you doing when we interrupted you? I was just walking back to my family so we can leave. And to return my wife’s female sunglasses to her that I am still wearing. Don’t judge. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “farm.” Do you live on a farm, or would you like to live on one? The closest I have ever been to being on a farm is flying over them while I was on the airplane on the way here. But you know, I think I actually would like to live on a farm. T

Chatting It Up With The Men And Women Who Dock In Cool Cape May... by Caroline Wenzel

HE Raging Bull, built in Weekstown, New Jersey in 2000, is a 48-foot Ocean Yacht that recently underwent major renovations — everything from new fish boxes to new fabric couches. In the air conditioned living room, the smell of fish is somehow nonexistent. Down the hall there are two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. There is also a very hi-tech looking ice machine. Last week, we sat for a moment on the boat’s plush brown couch with the Raging Bull’s captain. What is your name and where are you from? Captain John Powdermaker from North Cape May. Tell me about your boat. Well, um, actually this isn’t my boat. I am just the captain but the owner is a good friend of mine. His name is John Gallagher and he is from Pennsylvania. We have known each other for years and share the same passion for boating. Do you two fish off of Cape May? Yes we do, along with our crew of eight. We spend the majority of our time fishing right

Captain John Powdermaker, and yes, that’s his real name... around here, with the occasional adventure to go a little farther out. We go up to Ocean City for tournaments when we can, and those are so much fun. But we stay here all year-round, fishing for marlin and tuna. Pardon my lack of fish knowledge, but do you eat marlins? You could! I do when I go to Hawaii. Have you caught any marlin or tuna yet? Yes, we got a 300-pound blue marlin

hooked on for 30 minutes until it got away. Talk about a fight for nothing. Another day we were in the last couple minutes of a tournament when 5 marlins came up, and we caught one. Also around the end of June we had one of our best days. We caught a 226-pound bigeye tuna. What kind of fishing rods do you use? Eighty-pound, 50-pound, and 30-pound class rods. What is this blue string thing? Oh! That is marlin bait or marlin candy. It’s a different way of fishing. It attracts the fish by looking like a school of fish. So you mentioned you were a captain. How did that happen? Well I have been fishing forever and I became a captain in 1987. You have to go through a course now, but when I did it I had a weekend course then went to Baltimore to take the test in front of the Coast Guard. I can only captain certain boats. I have a 50-ton license, but this boat here is even less than that. But I used to be a car painter for a while, too.

The Ultimate Cape May Activity Guide

Whether you want family fun, or a romantic night out, you will find the answer in here... get reading!

There’s nothing like a rousing round of miniature golf to stoke competitive spirits, not to mention it’s useful for burning off those ice cream calories...

C

APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and hands-on activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier

when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Adults $23, kids $15, children six and under free. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free

shopping at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit  The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

Page 84 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit them on the web at www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour  Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Tours at 7:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of August. Limited tour. $10 for adults, $7 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac. org. 7. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt Discover the fun of exploring Cape May and uncovering its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a

Thursday, July 26, 2012 self-guided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www. capemaymac.org. 8. Lunch with the Pirates Lads, lasses, buccaneers and landlubbers are invited to the Carriage House Tearoom & Café located at the Physick Estate for a pirate-themed lunch experience as pirates invade the tearoom and commandeer the show. $18 for adults, $10 for children and includes lunch. Offered Fridays at 11:30am through August 31. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 9. Cape May Lighthouse, Oil House and Museum Shop The lighthouse, built in 1859, has 199 steps leading to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 10. Queen Victoria Gardens Tour Stroll through the wonderfully preserved, beautiful gardens around the four buildings of the Queen Victoria, a renowned

bed-and-breakfast in the heart of the Historic District on a self-guided tour. Purchase tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas. comfor more information. 12. The Old Fogey

O

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

LD Ma D’Catur used to say “Never criticize a farmer with your mouth full,” and menacingly, at that, looming over me and my siblings with leather belt in hand, ready to dispense retribution should we dare to do such a thing. Not that Ma was a farmer, nor were any family members or friends. In fact, what Ma would take to be criticism of a farmer was any attempt to excuse oneself from eating her cooking. I should explain: Ma was a fan of Boiling, and the iron pot that bubbled on the range over a fire hotter than the forges of Hell, and kept alight 24 hours a day by shifts of sweating servants, was used to render every species of deceased animal, half-dead crustacean or uprooted vegetable, into a smooth gray/brown mush that would, she said, “put hair on your chest.” Understandably, mealtimes at our household were grim affairs, and Father used to excuse himself by feigning a seizure as he raised the first spoonful of goo to his mouth, falling face first into the dish as ser-

vants rushed to save him from drowning, and Ma looked on with a mix of suspicion and delight on her face (I suspect she knew full well what he was up to, and so kept Father’s food piping hot so that his face was permanently seared. This must have been painful in the extreme, but Father always looked like he thought he had the best of the deal, and I think he may have been right.) Anyways, to this day I am not one to criticize farmers, whether my mouth is full or empty, unless the aforementioned farmer

is one of those ne’er-do-wells who slaps a label of retro design and overly thick paper on his produce declaring it “artisanal” or “organic” and then tries to charge townies 300 times the going rate for the pleasure of pretending it tastes just like it used to in the old days. Of course, I tried my hand at farming once, on 3 million acres of prime land in South America. I decided against cattle, and instead set my target at the lucrative fur market of Europe, and assembled a herd of two billion of the newly discovered “miniature mink” (otherwise known as the lemming), to be driven north to New York, thence by ocean liner to Paris. But no sooner had we reached the Panama Canal than the damnable creatures streamed determinedly off the edge and down into the roiling waters. It was like watching a hairy Niagara Falls, and the whole awful spectacle took hours to end. Undefeated, am I set to return, and will farm Wildwooders. Don’t look at me like that! Not for the meat! That would be indecent! It’s their thick hide I am after, for shoes.

So grab some friends, arrange a tournament and go golfing. 23. Buy Fresh Produce New Jersey is the Garden State for a reason. There’s some great farmland in the area, and markets like Duckie’s and No Frills on Broadway, along with Beach Plum Farm and Rea’s Farm on Stevens Street carry some of the freshest produce around. Which brings us to.... 24. Visit A Farmers Market Better yet, visit two farmers markets! On Tuesdays through August 28, the West Cape May Farmers Market is the place to be from 3-7:30pm for vendors, activities, great food and live entertainment. The market is located behind the West Cape May Firehall. Head over West Cape May bridge to the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in North Cape May on Saturdays through August 25 from 9am1pm for local produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more. 25. Parasail You don’t need to be a daredevil to rise 500 feet above the ocean, nor do you need a pair of wings. Parasailing has become a popular pastime that lets you soar above the coast and see Cape May from a perspective most people will never enjoy. It may be a view to die for, but we can assure you that you won’t be risking anything – the boat captains are coast guard certified and extremely safe. There are two great options to choose from. East Coast Parasail in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina, (609) 898-8359; Atlantic Parasail at the Two Mile Landing restaurant and marina on Ocean Drive highway, (609) 522-1869. 26. Lighthouse Storytime  Bring your children to the Education Center in Cape May Point State Park to listen to nautical tales and lighthouse adventure stories. 27. Sunset Beach The name says it all — follow Sunset Boulevard until it ends, then watch the sun sink beyond the jutting concrete ship. “God Bless America” is played as a veteran’s casket flag is lowered each day from May until September. After the ceremony, grab some food at the Grille or enjoy the incredible deals in the gift shop. There’s a long beach strewn with Cape May diamonds, or play a round of minigolf at Sunset Beach! 28. Self-Guided Audio Tour of Cape May Discover the Historic District of Victorian Cape May at your own pace with hand-held audio units leading the way. The $10 tour package comes complete with a map and index for 96 historic buildings on 69 sites. To start off on your own tour, stop by the Hill House, located at 1048 Washington Street on the Emlen Physick Estate, from 9am-2:30pm. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 29. Cape Island Theatre Bearcat Bootleggers or 1912, both by Ray Crew, are the dinner and a show offerings by Cape Island Theatre at the Old Grange Restaurant in Historic Cold Spring Village. Arcades  A trip to the beachfront is simply not complete without a trip to the arcade. Treat your kids to all the flashing lights, beeps, bells, buzzers and videogames, or relive your own childhood memories. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue and Gurney, the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. 31. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore... or, not usually. Follow New England Road until it ends, walk the path — aka Mosquito Alley —

Activity Of The Week

O

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Play with the kids.

N YOUR Cape May vacation, shake off the sand for a few hours and take your kids to see a show. Wake up to the Children’s Summer Playhouse shows at Cape May Convention Hall. These fast-paced shows are designed for children but will delight all ages for only $8, and with a 10:30am curtain, you’ll be on the beach by lunch. Bring Grandmother to Red Riding Hood’s Woods on July 25; a musical version of Charlotte’s Web plays August 1, and The Fabulous Fable Factory arrives on August 8. Call 609-8849565 for more information. For teatime, try Tales of the Victorians, serving up tantalizing tales and teatime treats at some of Cape May’s finest establishments, Thursdays at 4pm. Tickets are $10, free for ages 12 and under. On July 26, Tales visits the Cliveden Inn; on August 2, the Victorian Lace Inn. Call the East Lynne Theater Company at 609884-5898 for reservations and locations. Night owls will enjoy Michael Bonacci’s family magic shows, Saturday nights

Rick Tues. - Sat.

enjoy the decorations while adults enjoy the gleaming wood bar. The current show is Some Like a Shot, and August brings Sixteen Candelabras, a John Hughes parody of vampires and high school. Call 609-8844358 for reservations. Or, consider bringing your well-behaved kids to a regular theater performance. Thursday, July 26, 2012 RECREATIONAL Cape May doesn’t just have to be about relaxing. If you’re looking for an energy boost, there are lots of physical activities for you to get out and try. Keep moving! 1. Golf Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Bal-

ance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 8848986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Center: (609) 884-5600, www.aquatrails.com, and Miss Chris Marina: (609) 884-3351, www.misschrismarina.com.

«

STRETCH is a 7-month-old Basset House/Pit Bull mix who came to the shelter as a stray. This happy-go-lucky guy is low to the ground because of his short legs and long body, hence his name! Stretch is very social and he really enjoys being petted and going for walks. He is young, so needs someone to train him, but he is very smart and can go to a home with cats and children, but not dogs. The adoption fee is $95.

«

MADDY is a very small sweet female Beagle looking for someone to adore. She is approximately 2-3 years old and weighs 22 pounds. She is a gentle dog who loves walking and playing, and has a great demeanor, although she is a bit shy at first. Maddy can go to a home with other dogs, cats and children, but it is suggested that the atmosphere be on the calmer side. The adoption fee is $95

«

HOPE is a gorgeous pit bull mix, approximately 8 months old. Hope was surrendered by an owner who could no longer keep her. She is a bit stressed and shows some anxiety but is coming around. Hope will need some training and socializing as she doesn’t have the best manners, but she is smart and will learn with consistent, patient guidance. She is good with other dogs but probably not with cats or children. The adoption fee is $95.

EMBER is a very sweet, 1 year old female, whose owners moved away and left her and her kittens behind. All of Ember’s kittens have now been adopted, so now she is waiting for a new home, too. If you want a sweet, social little girl in your home, come visit Ember and let her purr for you. The adoption fee is $35.

GEORGE is patiently waiting at the shelter with his brother, Jerry. They are adjusting to the shelter, but it would be best if they had the chance to grow up in a home. George is friendly and outgoing, his brother is very scared and trying to fit in. If you think you can spare the time and love for them, stop in. The adoption fee is $70.

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

T HAPPENED again. Just the other day. A stranger walked up to me and said: “You don’t know me but I’m a bird watcher today because I used to read your old column in the New York Times and it got me curious. Now I’m hooked.” Let’s analyze this disclosure, starting with: “You don’t know me but...” Of course I don’t. You’re a stranger. “I’m a bird watcher today...” An existential affirmation of a life well lived. Bravo! “...because I used to read your old column.” How should I take this? What’s wrong with my new stuff? That old writing gig with the Times was just a tune-up for Exit Zero. “...and it got me curious.” Curious? You mean you weren’t gifted with a healthy curiosity before I started extolling the virtues of nature to estranged readers? Of course you were. Weren’t you that insatiably curious child that used to find wonder at every turn? It was adulthood that beat the brains out of everything that was fun to do. So somewhere between graduation and your first identity crisis you stopped

looking. My column? It was just the catalyst. Me, I’m the muse, the one who gave you and other quiet, shy, seekers of truth and beauty the strength to get out there and discover the wonders and spectacles that deserve discovering. Like the tornadoes of Purple Martins writhing over the marshes of the Maurice River. Chevrons of shore-

birds passing over your head right this very minute. Migrating warblers whose colors humble rainbows and whose f light instills envy in butterf lies. Swallows cutting cookie cutter patterns across the sky. Great Egrets stalking tidepools. Black Skimmers shearing the water with their bills. A thousand terns plunging for fish. And these are just the marvels you can witness right now in South Jersey! Fall migration is just getting warmed up. But...until you become a bird watcher, all these wonders just pass you by. The trick to becoming a bird watcher is the trick of becoming aware. Knowing how to look and where to look. Understanding what you see? That’s the compounded gratification that keeps bird watchers coming back for more and more. But what am I telling you all this for? You’re a bird watcher too.... What? You’re not a birder? Didn’t you used to read my old New York Times column?

Bird Droppings ? From Page 111 It doesn’t matter. You’re reading this column now. We’re living in the moment and this moment is momentous. The moment that you take a stand against all this stupid adult gobbledy-gook and get your curiosity back. Grab your binoculars. Put a bird field guide in your pocket. Go outside and get intimate with nature’s most engaging envoys. Cape May is simply loaded with birds. In fact, it is one of the planet’s most celebrated birding destinations. The time is now. The place is here. The only thing standing between you and a life long treasure hunt is.... You say you don’t have binoculars or a field guide? The folks over at the Cape May Bird Observatory can fix that problem. For less than the cost of a fancy dinner, they can outfit you with binoculars designed for bird study and a user-friendly field guide to help you pin the name to the bird. And after you get outfitted, you’ll probably want to go on one of their morning bird walks. It’s the best way to find out where the local birding hotspots are and to learn some bird watching basics. The fact that you are going to meet a

Great Egrets are just one of the local creatures you can acquaint yourself with through birding bunch of friendly, curious seekers of truth, meaning and beauty (like yourself) is just a bonus. So head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory — THE place for all of your nature needs. Pick up a free birding map, checklist and a schedule of our daily walks. Talk with our staff about the best spot for birding, check out optics, field guides, and anything else you might need — or don’t know you need yet! CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point 609-884-2736, and is open from

9:30am to 4:30pm daily, except Tuesdays. Our staff are always willing to help with questions. Scan the bookshelves for bargains in the used and vintage books section, look at the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the CMBO, or just browse. Check the sighting sheets for what’s being seen out in the field, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, or sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds and the Lake Lily view. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us at www.BirdCapeMay.org — where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight anden fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.
