How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been visiting Cape May for 15 years now. Who are you normally with? Usually my family and my parents. Favorite thing about Cape May? Everything and anything that has to do with relaxing! Least favorite thing? I don’t have a least favorite thing — I enjoy everything about Cape May. Favorite restaurants? So many — but if I have to pick I’ll say Lucky Bones and the Ugly Mug. Favorite place to stay? We usually stay at Seashore Campsites. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? That would proabably be the parking. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Editorials, the activity guide, and the photos of all the different events. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? Not a thing. Exit Zero keeps me in the know about Cape May all year. What’s your T-shirt size? I take a large, thanks.

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“If your lifeguard duties were as good as your singing, a lot of people would be drowning.” — Simond Cowell “My brother was a lifeguard in a car wash.”— Henny Youngman “The problem with the gene pool is there’s no lifeguard.” — Dave Gerrold

LIFEGUARDING in California began in the late 1930s. The number of people drowning was high, so California applied the east coast’s lifeguarding method. It was difficult at first because they didn’t know how to save a panicked person without hurting themselves too, but they perfected it over time.

Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... The Dirty Lifeguard WE FOUND this recipe on barnonedrinks.com — about as handy a website as we’ve come across. So be sure to buy one for your favorite lifeguard the next time you plop down next to him or her at the Rusty Nail.

Ingredients: 1 ounce Jagermeister herbal liqueur 1 ounce Rumple Minze schnapps 2 ounces orange juice 2 ounces pineapple juice Combine Jagermeister and Rumple Minze over ice in a pint glass. Filll with equal parts orange and pineapple juice. Stir and enjoy.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

This Isn’t A Fair Shake RULES and regulations can be pesky for small business owners, especially in a state like New Jersey, where taxes and fees abound. And if you happen to have a business on the Washington Street Mall, well you also have humungous rent payments to make, unless you happen to own your building. So, we have sympathy for the challenge facing new businesses which come to town — we ourselves operate a large retail store with rent payments that are tough to pay in the off-season. But try as we might (and we’ve been investigating this story for several weeks to get as many facts as we can), we’re having a hard time sympathizing with Stewart’s Root Beer. Their shiny new restaurant, on the site of the former Atlantic Books, has been operating since May with at least 50 seats more than allowed per its mercantile license. Last month, we reported on the June meeting of the mall’s Business Improvement District, at which City Manager Bruce MacLeod said the city had “done everything it can” to correct the issue. More on that in a minute, but first, some background… Theoretically, the more seats you have in your restaurant, the more people you’ll be bringing in to town, and the more parking congestion this creates. To offset the problem, the city established something called the Parking Trust Account about 20 years ago. (If you haven’t heard of this fund, don’t feel silly; neither had Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman when we called to ask for an explanation.) According to Section 52549E of the City Code Book, if a restaurant wants to increase its seating, it must pay

into this account at a rate of $5,000 for every four additional seats. Some restaurants, like the Pilot House, have found expanding to be cost prohibitive because of this ordinance. Other restaurants on the mall, like Jackson Mountain Café, have forked over hefty sums of money to do just that. “It was a big chuck of change to add 48 seats to our upstairs,” manager Jeff Conrad told us. “I don’t know why the city would be making an exception to that rule now.” It’s the same complaint we’ve heard from a number of restaurant owners on the mall — that the city is making an unfair exception, or at least delaying enforcement — with Stewart’s. “This situation is upsetting and frustrating,” said Martin Zarzycki, owner of Uncle Charlie’s ice cream and fellow seller of root beer floats. “We paid for the extra.” Some believe that the city has not, despite what Bruce MacLeod has said, done everything it can to correct a blatant snubbing of the law. Yes, the city has issued two verbal warnings to Stewart’s, says MacLeod, and issued two summonses to Stewart’s, one on June 18 and one on July 13, after these warnings were not heeded. And a court date has been scheduled for August 28. But we called former mayor Jerry Inderwies, who said that MacLeod has the power to shut the place down (“He is the Chief Executive Officer of the City, so absolutely”), and what’s more, that this is what should be happening. “There are regulations, subscribed to by city council, that need to be adhered to,” Inderwies said. “Stewart’s should have been told to adhere to the ordinance, or closed down.” When we asked MacLeod about this, he said, “The city does have a right to hold a hearing for the revocation of a mercantile

license,” but he wouldn’t say whether this is in the cards for Stewart’s. Just that the city will be recommending to the court that fines be assessed on a daily basis, although the final decision “rests with the judge.” Another former mayor, Jerry Gaffney, finds this wait-and-see-what-the-courtsays plan insufficient. And it does seem unusual, given that the city often acts quickly against city businesses which are in violation of local laws. Last year, when Jackson Mountain was found to be in violation for advertising with an illegal A-frame sign, they were told to remove the offending ad, or a fine would be issued the following day. And what about the Pilot House, who were issued a summons for something as minor as a chalkboard sign — one they’d received approval for. According to owner Deidre Hineline, the code enforcement officer simply hadn’t gotten that message, and she was forced to spend a day in court, within a week of being issued a summons (fast action indeed). “I don’t understand why there is such a delay in enforcement here,” Gaffney told us. “The law is the law. If they don’t conform to the laws, the code enforcement officer should be fining them every day. I don’t know why there’s a problem.” Some have suggested the reason for the “problem” — that is, the alleged delayed enforcement — is that one of the three Stewart’s partners is Patrick Rosenello, president of the North Wildwood Council and a leading light in the county’s Republican organization, a guy who could presumably throw his weight around, if he so desired. Rosenello couldn’t be reached for comment

“There’s a high Ibis” said Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory on last Monday’s bird watching walk. This did not refer, as one birder thought, to an Ibis “from the sixties,” but, rather, one which was circling high overhead.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 on this, despite accusations that his political clout explains a seeming nonchalance in the face of all the negative attention. We sent a reporter into Stewart’s last week to count seats. She came up with 52 downstairs and another 48 upstairs. The maximum amount currently allowed per their mercantile licence is 48. And when our reporter tried to book a party for a 10-year-old’s birthday later this month, she was told Stewart’s can accommodate 60 people upstairs alone. And yet, none of this fits with the picture of Rosenello painted by the building’s landlord, Joe Bogle of the Original Fudge Kitchen, who assured us that his own connection to the franchise ends with the landlord/tenant relationship, despite rumors he’s invested financially. “I’ve known Patrick for a long time,” Bogle said. “We serve together on the Wildwood Catholic school board. He is a family man of great integrity. Their being here is great for Cape May. The opposite of what you’ve heard is true; the city is making these guys dot every ‘I’ and cross every ‘T’ in order to get this thing corrected.” We did catch up with Rosenello’s partner, Sean Dougherty, who affirmed that they are in fact, “going through the required motions,” and that they “feel horrible” about the way this has played out because they “think so highly of the Cape May community.” As to why the business has continued to operate illegally, Doughery couldn’t comment, per his lawyer’s instructions.

Stewart’s have applied for the variance that would allow for the increased seating, Bogle said. He said it was his understanding that the reason for the violation was down to a couple of snafus, including mis-measuring — prior to Stewart’s taking over, the space had been occupied by Atlantic Books, and things like large bookshelves led to an underestimate of what the building could accommodate as a restaurant. But Stewart’s architect, Richard Stokes of Philadelphia-based Stokes Architecture, told us, “It’s not the case that the building was measured incorrectly. The original plan was for 48 seats, because this is what’s allowed for under zoning.” We don’t know for sure that the men behind the Stewart’s franchise decided they were going to pull a fast one and follow the logic that it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, but it’s hard to believe that a business which counts as one of its partners a council member for a neighboring municipality didn’t know its way around mercantile licences. We wish any new business the best of luck in Cape May, and that applies to Stewart’s, too, but they need to follow the law, and the city needs to enforce it. It’s frustrating enough to watch the city erect vinyl railings in the historic district while local business owners and residents are (rightly) prevented from doing so, but it’s a dereliction of duty to allow a business to operate with what looks like a blatant disregard for local laws while everyone else has to play by the rules. Message to city hall... get it sorted.

An Evening With Grasso LAST Saturday, for his opening night reception at SOMA NewArt Gallery, artist Victor Grasso wore a dapper Alfani suit and a black tie that read, in thin white letters, “Art is a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.” It took a couple of hours before we were close enough to read that, because for the better part of the three-hour evening, our view of the painter was blocked by throngs of adoring fans. (Gallery manager Steve Haas estimated a turnout of 300… enough to breeze through 1,000 plastic cups and 55 bottles of wine.) And rightfully so. Victor’s latest exhibition — “Somewhere, Beyond the Sea” – left us humbled. “He’s one of the most progressive artists in the area,” Steve told us. “Victor’s got a dark side that intrigues people.” Dark side, indeed. The show includes four black and white selfportraits of Grasso as an old-time, sinisterlooking mariner on the hunt for a beastly, “undulating” squid. “But I don’t want people to see this darkness as negative,” Victor explained. “It’s not evil or depressing; I tend to think of it as sexy. Look at old comic books or films; the bad guy is always sexier. As a kid watching cowboys and indians, I always rooted for the indian, the underdog.” And besides, Victor explained, the “darkness” in each painting is tempered by just a little bit of quirkiness. “It’s like a black comedy,” he said. “Not necessarily funny, but there’s something just a bit off-kilter about it.” Some of the night’s attendees were feeling a little “quirky” this evening, too.

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 Dave Clemans, in his 100-year-old cologne and Paul Frederick suit, may have looked like the picture of sophistication, but was quite feisty. We asked who he was wearing, and he said, “My wife, Chris.” We asked which painting spoke to him the most, and he said, “Well I’m not going to pick one with Victor in it, for goodness sake. He’s got six pictures of himself in one painting!” (“The Presentation of Leviathan” features a slew of Victors marveling over one slimy, tentacled sea monster.) Speaking of jokesters, the covers that Victor has painted this year for our color issues are on display, too, and the one of a suspender-clad Jack Wright laboring over his typewriter garnered much attention. “The painting is great, but I’m wary of purchasing it, because I heard Jack comes with it,” Chris Clemans laughed. Others told the EZ editor that he looks older and more thoughtful in paint than in person. “It’s been one big insult fest,” Jack said. Even Victor, when asked which painting is his most treasured, told us: “They’re all my children... but it’s definitely not that one.” Other paintings received nothing but accolades from the crowd, especially “Drink

Me”, which features local student Bela Lotozo as Alice in Wonderland. “It’s my favorite,” said Bella’s sister Eliza, “although I’m biased.” But the 15 other people we spoke with who called this piece either “breathtaking” or “aweinspiring” certainly aren’t. “Nightcap”, a portrait of Victor and a baboon on a bar, was another hit. It’s possible that the monkey, according to artist Carol King Hood of Cape May Point, is a metaphor for life. “It’s a beast,” she told us, as we marveled over the brush strokes. “This has a lot of meaning to me.” But it was Jennifer Lawinski, a Brooklyn journalist, who ended up walking away with it. “I’ve been planning to start investing in some art,” she told us, “and I want this to be my first painting. It’s incredible.” There were a lot of other out-of-towers who showed up for this show, including the cast of Cape May Stage’s The Thirty-Nine Steps, which opens August 8. We spoke with actor Mark Campbell — “I love the ones with all of the various squids,” he said. “Victor is very Rasputin in those.” He loves the city, although he hasn’t had time to do much exploring, save for a few night walks along the beach. In fact, one of the EZ staffers joined members of the cast for a late trip to the beach this night, too (and possibly a swim… we’ll never tell). Around nine, we braved the humidity

to sit on the veranda of Congress Hall with Victor, and when we left the artist, he was enjoying a hard-earned Johnny Walker Blue alongside his lovely wife and muse, Alicia, and some close friends. As for the rest of you, “Somewhere, Beyond the Sea” will be at SOMA until September 3, so don’t miss out.

For The Birds

BIRD watching has never been our bag, so to speak. Your reporter’s had an impression of it as an art for those with the patience of a god and the wardrobe of, well, not a god… fanny packs and Teva sandals come to mind. But even we had a good time at the Monday bird watching walk hosted by the Cape May Bird Observatory. The enthusiasm of the binocular-bearing clan on Cape Island — the center of the known birding universe — is contagious. Before even leaving the parking lot, even skeptics find themselves asking: “You say that’s a red-winged blackbird overhead?” The scenery helps. The two-hour, milelong tour weaves throughout what used to be the town of South Cape May… “used to be” because the place was destroyed by the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. Now, the area parallel to Sunset Boulevard is comprised of

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 meadows, mudflats and low grasses protected by the Nature Conservancy. Walking down one of the former town’s reinforced gravel roads, we were surrounded by wetlands, sparkling with the reflection of the early morning sun, and hundreds of rose mallows, a vibrant pink member of the hibiscus family. There were so many of the latter, we felt a bit like Dorothy in that gorgeous poppy field (before she passed out). About 30 of us headed out on this morning’s walk, and the ratio of birders to knowledgeable volunteers and CMBO naturalists was, according to leader Pete Dunne, 1.5 to 1. “On other tours, there might be a leader or two, but we’ve got a glut of talent,” he said. Then he instructed: “Snuggle up to your favorite,” so we tagged along behind a portly fellow by the name of Chuck Slugg. Chuck was full of good birding trivia. “How much money worth of optics do you think there is here?” he asked. Considering the slew of expensive looking scopes, tripods, and binoculars being carted around, we’d been wondering the same thing. “About $4,000,” Chuck said. (But you can get a decent pair of binoculars for $100.) He also told us

about the mute swans who were coming up on our right. They looked so serene, so beautiful, so… deadly? “It was a male swan who killed a guy on a golf course in Chicago,” Chuck whispered to us. And suddenly, birding seemed a whole lot more exciting than it had when the alarm went off that morning. We looked up the attack when we got home… turns out, it happened just last April. Apparently, swans are put on golf courses because they bully pesky geese out of the way but, sometimes, they get “downright aggressive.” More tidbits? “Queen Elizabeth I claimed ownership of all the swans in England,” Chuck continued, “and if you poached one, that was punishable by death. And each swan has 25,215 feathers. Give or take.” Chuck suspects that the folks who study these things have only counted one bird, because that figure pops up, no matter how many times you Google. We spent the rest of the walk learning new things about birds we’d never seen before, and new things about birds we’ve been seeing all of our lives… like, there is no such thing as a seagull. “Would you call a bird a baygull just because he flew over the bay?” Chuck asked. Fair point. Those annoying scavengers (er, “very active foragers”) are actually called things like “Great Black-backed gulls,” which is a very distinguished name, we think, for a

creature that steals your Cheetos. Then there was our favorite species of the day, the American Oystercatcher, who “looks like he’s wearing a tuxedo and smoking a carrot.” This guy’s got a bill that’s “made to jam things,” according to Pete, who said the oystercatcher will spear it’s way into a clam or whack a mussel off a dock with the appendage. “Birds are specialized not to compete with one another,” said Pete. And we loved watching an osprey fly over the ocean with the day’s catch — a fish who was having a really bad day — firmly grasped in its talons. “I had a friend who once caught a sea bass that had two osprey talons embedded in it’s back,” said a fellow birder. When it’s hunting, the osprey can dive so that it’s fully submerged and, obviously, doesn’t suffer coming up empty-handed lightly. We saw 59 species altogether (Pete helped us with our checklist), but in all honesty, we had just as much fun watching our fellow humans. Like the sedimentologist who told us that he knows more about nearly every subject on the planet than mostly everyone else (uh, okay) except for birds… Pete Dunne’s got him beat on that. Then there was the guy who looked dressed for safari — hunter green

Page 20 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 shorts, a khaki button-up, black suspenders, a pack of water and other reinforcements, and a Crocodile Dundee-style hat. And then there was the middle-aged woman we overheard discussing “weed recipes.” (At first, we thought she meant the kind of brownies we’d experimented with as college co-eds, but then we realized she was pointing to some of the edible plants along our walk.) Most surprising were all of the young folks who’d signed up… like the thirty-somethings from DC who’d gotten the birding bug after taking a trip to Patagonia. Or Robert Dube, a 28-year-old heavy equipment operator who comes here every other week from Wildwood for the exercise and also “because it’s great learning about different ecosystems.” We were so busy watching other birders, we didn’t realize they might be watching us as well. “It’s hard to spot the birds through the binoculars, isn’t it?” said Chip Strong. He must have noticed your reporter’s binocular ineptitude, so Chip and his wife Adele assured us that it gets easier, before explaining they’d taken a day off from the homeless shelter where they volunteer in Philadelphia to come on this walk. They told us they’ve

Thursday, August 9, 2012 been in 40 different countries and on all seven continents looking for birds. “This is our vice,” Chip said. “We live cheaply. Our only splurge is going places.” And yet, they still refer to Cape May as the “mecca” of birding. “It’s energizing,” said Adele. “Cape May is to birding what the Smithsonian is to museums.” So go ahead and give birdwatching a try, if you haven’t already (www.cmbo.org). It’s worth it, and it’s cooler than you may think. We only counted two fanny-packs.

Singer Songwriter Spotlight SINGER Jimm Ross is the next featured performer at the Singer Songwriter showcase at the Boiler Room in Congress Hall. He’ll be appearing next Wednesday, August 15. And you know what? He’s pretty darned psyched about it. “I’ve been to the Boiler Room before, but I have never played there. So, am I excited about playing at one of the most historic places in Cape May? Yes, I am — it’s pretty bad-ass.” The Singer Songwriter showcase is

a preview of the Singer Songwriter Cape May annual spring event. Each Wednesday through August, Don Shaw kicks things off around 8:30 with an Open Mic, then a different singer songwriter follows at around 11pm. Myra Vassian, who runs the entertainments at Congress Hall, is excited. “There’s nothing pretentious or careful about the way Jimm sings. His voice has a lot of character and depth — it reminds me of the folk singers of the sixties.” An accomplished artist, Jimm also makes sea glass jewelry, and he currently has 18 watercolors on display at Higher Grounds, on West Perry Street. “I had to part with some of the older pieces to motivate myself to get going on new ones,” he told us. Guess it doesn’t work that way with music, huh? “No, once you perform it, it’s out there,” Jimm says. You can catch him at various venues around town — he’ll be at the Pilot House the night before his Boiler Room gig. So, has he found his spot? “Oh, I love it here. I absolutely, positively love Cape May.”

PARTING SHOT

This Thursday’s Movie on the Beach is “Pirates of the Caribbean,” followed by the underestimated classic that is “Jaws” on August 16. Bring a blanket, bring a chair, bring your loved ones and settle down on the soft Cape May sand for a magical experience. But don’t just take our word for it... award-winning actor (and big Cape May fan) Philip Seymour Hoffman was spotted watching “Field of Dreams” on the beach last week.

Local Gallery Owners Host A Stunning Tribute

John and Dawn DeMayo of the Victorian Walk Gallery display the work of Thomas Kinkaide like never before

T

HE work of the late Thomas Kinkade, the most collected living artist of his time — his paintings hang in approximately one of every 20 American homes — will be honored with a legacy celebration in Cape May the weekend of August 19. On Saturday, from 11am to 2pm, the largest collection of Kinkade’s work ever assembled on the east coast will be on display in Convention Hall as part of a free museum exhibit. A great deal of the pieces are from the Kinkade family’s personal collection, and many have never traveled outside of California. Later this night, from 6 to 9pm, Kinkade’s brother Patrick will reveal, for the first time, the last painting the artist worked on before his death, as well as a video chronicling the man’s legacy. Tickets are available through the Victorian Walk Gallery on Ocean Street, owned by the event hosts, Dawn and John DeMayo. On Sunday, to round out the celebration, a Champagne brunch for collectors will take place here, the oldest Thomas Kinkade signature gallery in the country.

Thomas Kinkade and his brother as young boys... Patrick will reveal the painter’s last piece on Saturday, August 18. Cape May’s landscapes were especially inspirational for Kinkade, who would paint the local scenery in a pair of overalls at the urging of his wife, who didn’t want him to ruin his clothes. “He fell in love with Cape May,” Dawn DeMayo says. “Once word got out that Kinkade was painting at Cape May Point, so many people came out to see him there that the police had to be called to manage the crowd.” One of the painter’s favorite subjects

was the lighthouse. “Cape May Light, which clings to the southernmost tip of New Jersey,” he once said, “is far-famed for its stately height and majestic simplicity of line. To me, it is an emblem of faith and hope, reminding us that we endure life’s storms only through the grace of God.” Christian values informed the work of the painter, who raised more than $2 million for The Salvation Army after 9/11 by creating custom images the charity used in its fundraising efforts. “People who put my paintings on their walls are putting their values on the wall,” he was quoted as saying in The New York Times. “Faith, family, home, a simpler way of living, the beauty of natural, quiet, tranquility, peace, joy and hope.” It was important to Kinkade that his art be uplifting and understandable, and his hope was that his work would help people to appreciate art. Today, works donated by Kinkade hang in the White House, Vatican, Tate Museum in London, and St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. For more information, call (609) 8984200.

The Undertow

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column, which changed the face of Cape May, is back, and it’s as pretty good as ever

U

NDERTOW: Brought to you by NBC. This column actually happened eight hours ago. Sunday Outing of the Week: In an attempt to have enough Cape May-based material to keep you all from turning the page after three paragraphs, the family and I have made a little tradition of heading into Cape May (from beautiful downtown Erma) every Sunday afternoon for a pleasant, relaxing, bonding excursion (which, in actuality, is the exact opposite of that… lots of yelling, crying, stomping of feet… and that’s just ME) into the city I fell ass-backwards into 19 years ago. This week’s sojourn took us to Captain Kidd’s treasure hunt, which ended, as most O’Brien Family Events do, with two children elated and a third ready to throw himself off a bridge. Henry (six) and Jackson (nine) took all of 45 seconds to find their super-cool little treasure chests (full of assorted toys and dreamy photos of Captain Kidd aka Will Mendo), while Owen (10) spent the better part of the afternoon stomping around on the sand, stopping every few minutes to dig a little hole

and wipe the tears from his sandy little eyes. It was like a really sad episode of The Amazing Race. He might still be there. I’m not sure if Phil Koegan sent him home yet But we eventually left the beach as Owen heaped $1,000,000 in future psychiatrist bills worth of self-flagellation onto his tiny little shoulders, and headed over to North Cape May and Harpoon Henry’s. We had their always-excellent wings (broiled, not fried, very yummy), some crunchy onion rings, and a mile high Prime Rib sandwich (Cath had a chicken salad-stuffed tomato… such a girl). The all-female trio Blondage played a mix of modern pop and country hits. They were not exactly my cup of tea (I lack the innate ability

to enjoy ANY band I see live because I think I’m the best singer in the world) but the crowd was digging them so who am I to argue? It is very, very difficult to have a bad time at Harpoon Henry’s, even if you’re trying, as I usually am. Me, the Mrs and the Henrys (Teresa and Ed) go back a few years now. Cath managed the late, lamented Henry’s on the Beach for 13 years, I worked under her (yeah I did!) as a server, and we used to vacation with them in Fort Myers Beach, FL and have dinner and drinks a few times a year. But as time and distance tend to do, we’ve grown not-quiteas-close as we used to be (they’ve got their own little ones to dote on now as all the Henry offspring have been procreating almost as quickly as the O’Brien’s the last 10 years) but Uncle Ed and Aunt Tee-Tee are still good for birthday and Christmas gifts, and will always hold a special place in our hearts. And Ed is the star of my absolute favorite chapter of Murder-Oke! (my short story/collected anthology, available at the Exit Zero Store, Cape Atlantic Book Co., and the Morey

Store), a chapter titled simply, “A Harpooned Henry.” You can imagine the rest. Or plunk down $10 and buy the damn thing. Anyway, this was all followed by some stern minivan lecturing, no ice cream, and an evening of Lego Batman 2 and Kiddy O’ke. All in all, a full Sunday. Also took a vacation day last from my REAL job last week (anyone from Morey’s reading this; I… uh… I was sick! That’s it…) to hang in Wildwood. We hit the Morey’s water parks, which hit right back (why does every slide ride end with me getting sledge hammered in the balls?). Raging Waters behind Mariner’s Landing is the slightly more kid friendly of the two, with its totally revamped Adventure River, while Ocean Oasis, behind Surfside Pier, skews a little older and features the fantastic new “Wipe Out” water slide race. Another couple of places where it’s nearly impossible not to enjoy yourself. Completely exhausted (there’s a lot of damn steps to the top of those slides), we stumbled onto the boardwalk, had some Chip Stix, some Mack’s Pizza, and I wore socks with my sandals. Okay, not really, but everyone else did. Is this a thing now, socks with sandals? Is it the goal of every new generation to make themselves uglier than the one before? Pajamas pants and tank tops to Wawa? Pierced tongues and eyebrows? Tattoos on your ass? Worst thing my generation ever did was the mullet… but I digress. It was a real shoebie day for us... followed by some minivan sing-alongs, Douglas Fudge, and an evening of Super Smash Bros. And good GOD I love my kids so much I could scream. My New Favorite People of the Week: Scott and Jamie Rongione (Ron-Joan) and their baby daughter Joey (who now likely will have a lifelong fear of swine thanks to Blue the pig). I’ve known Scott and Jamie for about six years now (Joey less so as she just recently came into existence) and I’ve always liked them. But now I like-like them. They come down from Philly a couple times

a year and always make a point to catch some Terry O’ke at the Boiler Room, kid and adult versions. They are also both just really cool and nice and I have so few adult friends and I love them SO MUCH and ohmygod am I being too needy? I feel like I’m being too needy. Don’t run away! I LOVE YOU!!! When (Blue) Pigs Fly Moment of the Week: Chris Bezaire, a frequent visitor to but non-participant in, Terry O’ke, sang the hell out of some Marshall Tucker Band Thursday in the Boiler Room. An all-in-all stunning turn of events. Stunning that he asked, stunning that he sang, stunning that he sang truly very well. Favorite Facebook Post of the Week (Terry O’Brien Division): “Miracle drive into work at noon today. That I’m not stranded on the roof of The Emerald Blur (my Green Windstar) flagging down a helicopter is pure luck. Best part? One working wiper (passenger side only) and a fogged up windshield. The drive from Wildwood Wawa to M.A.B. Paints parking lot was 200-feet and 2.5 of the most terrifying minutes of my life.” Favorite Facebook Post of the Week (Non-Terry O’Brien Division): From Al Olivero, a manager at Frank’s Theaters, father of Maura, 10 (who plays 27 different instruments… she’s the next Prince!), husband of Exit Zero store worker bee Beth, and future drummer for Acoustic Mayhem: “I think the LGBT kiss-in being staged outside Chick-Fil-A is wrong. I’m all for equality and tolerance of other harmless lifestyles, but I wouldn’t want this if it were gay straight or in between. I believe homosexuals should have the same rights as heteros, but we heteros don’t go around PDA’ing for attention. To be considered equal, first act equal. Don’t stoop down to your opponents level, force them to come up to yours.” Well said, Al. My $.02? I don’t particularly care who marries whom, neither do I particularly care how American businesses spend their money, but do not F*** with my Chik-Fil-A. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Movie Column

D

By Kate Chadwick, Cape May Film Festival Member

ISCLAIMER: I don’t get to the movies much. It’s not that I have anything against them; they’ve just gotten expensive, and I’m not great at staying still for two hours unless I’m unconscious. So it wasn’t my idea to see Magic Mike, a movie about the trials and tribulations of a young male stripper. I’m more a Woody Allen kind of girl, but since it was part of a girls-night-out package deal, I thought, what the hell? And yes, it seemed kind of a stereotypical 40-something, (mostly) married (mostly) moms outing, but again — what the hell? Second disclaimer — I had barely, and I mean barely, heard of the movie’s lead actor, Channing Tatum, prior to seeing the film. (As proof of this, I just Googled him for probably the fifth time, as I keep wanting to call him “Tatum Channing.”) Actually, besides Matthew McConaughey, of whom I’ve never been a big fan, I’d heard of no one in the film. Of the two lead actors, I vastly preferred Alex Pettyfer. That’s not to say I found Tatum

Channing Tatum carries the lightweight — and hard-bodied — Magic Mike (Channing?) without charm — he’s simply not my type. But he carried a lightweight movie well, and I can see his appeal, particularly during the dance scenes — the man can move. Seriously. Last disclaimer — I read on Rotten Tomatoes that this is NOT a fun, girlsnight-out film, and it’s kind of true. It starts out lightweight and frivolous, and then becomes a morality play: don’t do drugs, don’t cross bad guys, don’t trust

slime-balls, even if they employ you (especially if they employ you?), and having sex with people who don’t give a s**t about you equals hurt feelings, etc., etc. Matt Bomer of television’s White Collar is good-looking and a passable dancer but in a throwaway role here. McConaughey is suitably slimy as the strip club owner, although I found him just a smidge over the top. He redeemed himself somewhat with his own dance performance at the end, holding his own against actors half his age — something you don’t see women given the opportunity to do in film very often. Okay, ever. Female leads Cody Horn and Olivia Munn were both beautiful. Munn has lovely breasts but beyond that was forgettable, and I cannot for the life of me remember the first name of Horn’s character , if that tells you anything. This film is forgettable fun if you like beautiful bodies (and who doesn’t?) and a lesson (whether you want it or not), complete with a pensive-staring-out-to-seare-evaluating-my-life scene. If you can take that, you can take Magic Mike.

Theater Review

T

“The Poe Mysteries” at East Lynne, by Catherine Dugan

HE EAST Lynne Theater Company’s production of The Poe Mysteries captures the creativity of Edgar Allan Poe, the father of the modern detective story. Playwright James Rana has adapted three Poe short stories featuring C. Auguste Dupin: “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Mystery of Marie Roget,” and “The Purloined Letter.” Fred Velde plays Dupin and Thomas Raniszewski plays Henry Williams, an American reporter who comes to Paris to interview Dupin in his sparse apartment. With a few simple props and a backdrop by TBE Design, ELTC transforms the stage into locations around Paris, where four actors — Mark Edward Lang, Shelley McPherson, James Rana and Grace Wright — bring Dupin’s tales to life. In Velde’s portrayal of the arrogant, witty Dupin, we see hints of sleuths to come later, including Sherlock Holmes. Dupin is the original amateur who helps the police not for love of justice, but because he loves a good puzzle. Unlike the police — and Wil-

liams — he is not distracted by the sadness of the cases he investigates. His intellect allows him to see what others miss, and to think zebras — or orangutans — when he hears hoof beats. The players act out his theories with the compassion Dupin lacks. Dupin informs Williams that the truth lies in what seems irrelevant, and that an investigator should not ask “what has occurred,” but rather “what has occurred that has never occurred before.” Dupin advances the career of the police prefect; though he can not be bothered to remember

the man’s name, he’s quick to assist when the prefect asks for help with an affair “so simple, and yet baffles us altogether.” The show has no intermission and moves quickly —too soon, the cases are solved. Poe lived a life worthy of his stories. He was an orphan adopted and rejected, who joined the army, drank, gambled, and married his cousin when she was 13, then losing her to tuberculosis. Conscious of his failings, he wrote, ”I have great faith in fools; self-confidence my friends call it.” Poe died under mysterious circumstances in 1849, leaving behind a legacy of pioneering short stories, science fiction and horror. The Poe Mysteries is directed by Gayle Stahlhuth. Lee O’Connor is Stage Manager, with costumes by Marion T. Brady and production assistance by Gabrielle Wilson. The Poe Mysteries runs Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8:30 through September 1 at First Presbyterian Church of Cape May. Tickets are $30, with discounts for seniors, students, and people with disabilities, and ages 12 and under are free.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ENVY the lifeguards of today, toned and tanned and able to perch atop their ivory (or some similar paint selection) towers and pose for the ladies and gents, whilst watching over the scattering of souls who brave the cold Atlantic. In My Day, when Cape May was the premier vacation spot for all of America (or at least the parts that count), crowds of up to three million would throng our beaches at any one time, and such was the noise of thrashing in the water that huge schools of great white sharks gathered to feed, plus the occasional kraken or giant squid. Because of this, we had ten thousand lifeguards stationed in the stretch between the Admiral and Congress Hall hotels, armed with powerful monoculars, steam powered harpoon guns and special compressed-air ejector seats on our stations. When a swimmer found him or herself in distress, or missing a limb from a shark attack, which happened once every second, the nearest lifeguards would be propelled into the air at high speed, landing

with pinpoint accuracy in the throng. Once, when I overshot my angle by a fraction, and skipped across the surface of the water rather than plunge in, I touched the water ten times and when I came to rest a mile out, I had 13 fully grown sharks on my harpoon. By the end of a typical day, I estimate I had performed 350 rescues, 28 shark executions and 201 cases of mouth to mouth resuscitation, and my arms would be leaden from the effort, and my lips blue with strain from all of the blowing. Also, there was

some humor to be had: at the height of the Cape Gay days, we were under orders not to limit the nekkidness, but to make sure it was restricted to beautiful young chaps and chapesses, and so when we spotted someone who was aesthetically unpleasing with their bits out, we would spring on them like hungry tigers and wrestle them into a more modest swimsuit (we had examples of all extra-large sizes under our seats), which would be securely fastened at the back with a small padlock, to prevent repeat offences. We did not, of course, enforce the reverse, as stripping a lad or lass for the benefit of onlookers is not the mark of a civilized city, but we did encourage the best specimens of man and womenhood to bare all, with inducements of double page spread lithographs in this very rag. I hear the opportunistic Scotch proprietor of the paper is planning the same thing for next summer, so urge you all to hit the gym, invest in tanning oil and buy tiny little Speedos in preparation. I myself will lead the charge, of course, and am flexing as I type.

EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. This week’s recipient is Regina Kelly of West Deptford, New Jersey, who was ambushed walking with friends on the promenade. What to do you do? I’m 17 and still a student, but I’ve been working this summer at Philly Pretzel Factory. What are you up to today? My friends and I were just heading to the Akroteria to get something to eat. Do you have any plans for later? We’re going to do a little shopping later on the mall, then we’re headed to Harpoon Henry’s for dinner. When is the last time you got some flowers? The last time I got flowers was for my prom, last spring. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I called my girlfriend by the wrong name the other day. She seemed annoyed at first, but seems to be over it now. I, on the other hand, am mortified. Do I keep apologizing, and more importantly, how do I make sure I don’t ever do it again? — Loose Lips Dear Lips Gentle reader, you haven’t given the Answer Lady much to go on here, have you? The short answer is, the most efficient way to never say anything we don’t mean, ever, ever again is to have one’s tongue removed. Seems a bit extreme, though, does it not? For instance, sometimes when the Answer Lady is at Uncle Bill’s, she means to say ‘fruit cup and a slice of dry rye toast,’ but it comes out ‘tall stack of chocolate chip pancakes with

whipped cream.’ Clearly this is an honest mistake. Was yours? Did you call your girlfriend by your OTHER girlfriend’s name? Your wife’s? Your dog’s? Angelina Jolie’s? One can see how these last two could be considered an honest mistake, the first one, not so much. And the Answer Lady won’t ask what the two of you were actually doing when this happened. Some things are better left unsaid. As you know. Dear Answer Lady I am a sophomore in high school, my

sister is a senior. My parents are great, but they are always comparing me to her. She is a really good athlete, I’m not interested in sports. She’s outgoing, I’m kind of reserved. I don’t even think they realize they’re doing it, but it hurts my feelings when they encourage me to be more like her. How do I combat this? — Little sister Dear Sister Ugh. The Answer Lady does not know why parents do this, and she is a parent herself, which makes it doubly confounding. (She is also a sibling, but she was the “no, you can’t do that — look how your sister turned out” cautionary tale type, not the “be more like her” type. ) A certain amount of sibling rivalry is normal and healthy, but intentionally pitting people against one another has a tendency to backfire. Don’t think you’ll be done with it once you leave home; college professors will hold up the best essay in class, and employers will say“Johnson has the sales figures to beat this month, everyone.” You are aware of it, so that’s half the battle. Do your best and be yourself.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? Lindsey Tran and I am visiting here from Piscataway, New Jersey. What are you doing here? I am here with my family on vacation. We have been here for a couple of days, and I love it. What’s the best part so far? The best part for me has been getting to go to the beach everyday. What were you doing when we interrupted you? Eating some yummy ice cream. I got it over at Ben & Jerry’s. The theme for this week’s issue of Exit Zero is “lifeguard.” Have you ever been saved by a lifeguard? No, and I really hope I will never have to be saved by one, either. T

Chatting It Up With The Men And Women Who Dock In Cool Cape May... by Caroline Wenzel

HE Bradam is a 63-foot Hatteras owned by a charming couple we met, Bill and Susie Cabot. It was built in North Carolina in 1989. Almost everything inside and out has been replaced, which explains why it is so beautifully up-todate. The boat is named after their sons Adam and Brandon, who the couple are on their way to see. Where are you from? My wife and I are from Atlanta, Georgia. I am a retired orthopedic surgeon. We also have a familyrun business in Burlington, New Jersey called American Casein. We used to live on our boat nine to 10 months out of the year because it was something we always wanted to do. But about a year ago, one of my sons, who was living in Cambodia, got married and we became grandparents! Now we are spending three months on our boat and nine months back in Georgia with our family. How long have you been onboard? We have been aboard for two months. We just stopped in Cape Cod and now we are grad-

Bill Cabot aboard Bradam ually heading home. Next week is Susie’s birthday so we are meeting one of our sons in Annapolis. Typically we go to Maine in the summer and we used to go to the Bahamas in the winter. But now we are just going to keep the boat up north and use it in the summer to go to Maine and back. This boat has been a wonderful source of hap-

piness to our entire family. We will always make time to go out on it. Any adventures? That land hurricane two months ago! We were anchored in Annapolis and around 10:30pm, we heard a horrendous noise and looked around to see our boat falling apart. It was a derecho. The wind speeds were 80-90 miles an hour. This all happened in the Chesapeake Bay. How did you manage to get out of that? It was like all hell broke lose. Thirteen people died. It was not easy to manage but we eventually moved away from it after two hours. It was the worst thing we have ever been through, and we have been through many bad storms. How long are you staying in Cape May? We are here for four days. We love it here and come down all the time. This marina is wonderfully run. Definitely one of the best parts, aside from the Lobster House, that is. The guys on the dock are just great. It is frustrating to go to other docks where the dock hands do not know what they are doing. But these guys here at South Jersey Marina are so knowledgable.

The Ultimate Cape May Activity Guide

Whether you want family fun, or a romantic night out, you will find the answer in here... get reading!

A visit to the Cape May Lighthouse is a must-do agenda item for any trip to America’s Original Seaside Resort — you won’t believe the view from up here

C

APE May isn’t just a beach; it’s so much more than surf and sand. Not sure where to start? You’re in luck: we have assembled a complete guide to Cape May activities. Even locals might find something new. Plus, there are rainy day ideas, marked with a . Enjoy! FAMILY-FRIENDLY Cape May has a great variety of activities that you can enjoy with the entire family. Here is a handy and comprehensive list of ideas to get you started. 1. Historic Cold Spring Village Ever wonder what it was like to live in Cape May 200 years ago? The answer can be found at this open-air living history museum, a seven-minute drive from town. Through interactive, educational and handson activities, visitors can make a connection with the past by experiencing it. The many authentically restored homes, amid idyllic shaded areas, make it hard to not feel like Abe Lincoln’s in office… and it’s even easier

when the Civil War re-enactment rolls into town. There is a themed event every weekend — Cold Spring is a can’t-miss for history buffs. Give them a call at (609) 898-2300 or visit their website at www.hcsv.org. 2. Tidelands Eco-Tour Board the Osprey to learn about the rich history of Cape May’s waterways, like the creation of Cape Island, the dredging of the harbor, South Cape May, fishing fleets, the various features along the harbor, the Nature Center of Cape May, the Corinthian Yacht Club and more. The Osprey is conveniently located at the Miss Chris Marina. Offered at 10am, 1:30 and 6pm daily, with a 1-hour 4pm harbor cruise every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Adults $23, kids $15, children six and under free. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 3. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a small, quaint seaside town (kind of like this one!), then make sure you check out bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping

at the outlets. No matter what you choose once you’re there, you’ll enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins and whales on your way. They even have a bar onboard! For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64FERRY or visit www.capemaylewesferry.com. 4. The First Resort Exhibit  The First Resort by author Ben Miller is the basis for this exhibit sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. “Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of The First Resort” brings to life the key turning point in Cape May’s 20th century history. Visitors to the exhibit will be treated to rare photographs, video and a multitude of artifacts showcasing the years immediately before and after the city’s Urban Renewal movement. The exhibit will be open daily through November 4 and admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac. org. 5. Whale and Dolphin Watching

Page 92 Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a big thrill to see these beautiful creatures. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. And, as the name implies, you might even see a whale. Tours take off from Wilson Avenue. If the ship is docked you can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For directions or more information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit them on the web at www. capemaywhalewatch.com. 6. Historic Haunts House Tour  Get into the Victorian spirit on a guided tour of the historic (and some say haunted) Physick Estate, and learn about the Victorians’ fascination with spiritualism, as well as today’s modern ‘“ghost-hunting” methods. Tours at 7:45pm on Mondays and Wednesdays through the end of August. Limited tour. $10 for adults, $7 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 7. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt Discover the fun of exploring Cape May and uncovering its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a selfguided discovery tour. Packets for the entire family are available for $5. For more informa-

Thursday, August 9, 2012 tion, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 8. Lunch with the Pirates Lads, lasses, buccaneers and landlubbers are invited to the Carriage House Tearoom & Café located at the Physick Estate for a pirate-themed lunch experience as pirates invade the tearoom and commandeer the show. $18 for adults, $10 for children and includes lunch. Offered Fridays at 11:30am through August 31. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 9. Cape May Lighthouse, Oil House and Museum Shop The lighthouse, built in 1859, has 199 steps leading to the watch gallery for a panoramic view of the Jersey Cape and Atlantic Ocean. The Museum Shop carries souvenirs, books, videos and other maritime items. Admission to the Visitors Orientation Center and the ground floor of the lighthouse is free. Tower admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 10. Queen Victoria Gardens Tour Stroll through the wonderfully preserved, beautiful gardens around the four buildings of the Queen Victoria, a renowned bed-andbreakfast in the heart of the Historic District on a self-guided tour. Purchase tickets at the

Washington Street Mall Information Booth. Admission is $7 and includes a booklet that describes the plants found in numbered areas throughout the property. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org. 11. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” — quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool: go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpacas – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563 or visit www.bayspringsalpacas.comfor more information. 12. Combination Trolley/Physick Estate Tour  First hop on this guided trolley tour of Cape May’s Historic District, followed by a tour of its only Victorian house museum, the Emlen Physick Estate, located at 1048 Washington Street. Admission also includes the Carriage House Gallery, and the tour lasts about two hours. Tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for

Or why not explore Cumberland County, home to bald eagles and to Port Norris, the one-time oyster capital of the world? Make sure you don’t miss the A.J. Meerwald, the

A Shoebie’s Life

T

A new advice column on vacationing in Cape May... by Irving Spiff, Jr

HIS week is all about smoking in Cape May. I’m not talking about grilling, even though I could smoke a brisket so tender the meat would fall apart like sand toys from Steger’s Beach Shop. Depending on how long you’ve been a Cape May shoebie, you might not get that reference. Steger’s used to be a great little store along Beach Avenue, next to the Akroteria. No, the smoking I’m talking about is from those little white and brown sticks that give you cancer or from a big old, stinky cigar. There’s not too many pipes around these days and I’m not going anywhere near those little hand-rolled cigarettes with the funny smell. Smoking is illegal in all Cape May restaurants and bars. If you want to light up, you need to step outside and no amount of arguing with your waitress or complaining to the manager is going to change that. It happens all the time at the local bars, probably because the laws in Pennsylvania, Virginia and many other states allow smoking in bars. There’s been a push in recent years to make smoking illegal in automobiles across

NJ, though that movement has stalled at the state level. Some municipalities have enacted their own laws, but Cape May is not one of them. Feel free to smoke away in your private car if you choose, but don’t throw your butts out the window. For one, it’s illegal and you WILL be pulled over by the local police if they see you. Secondly, the town is filled with 18th and 19th century buildings and pedestrians who don’t want to be hit with flaming

projectiles. Smoking is restricted inside most hotels, motels, B&Bs, condos and other rentals in Cape May. Candles are also forbidden at in B&Bs, by the way. Make sure to ask at check-in, if you have any questions. A lot of visitors think they can get around the rules if they clean up all their ashes and butts, but that smell lingers and attaches itself to the carpets and furniture. Balconies are usually included in the no-smoking policy, especially in oceanfront hotels. That’s because those same ocean breezes people find so charming bounce off the hotel and efficiently disperse smoke to all the adjacent balconies. This leaves the subject of smoking in common areas like the mall, promenade and beach. You can walk on the mall or promenade on any given day and see someone who simply turns their head and exhales smoke right into someone else’s direction without a second thought. Don’t be that guy. All it takes is a little bit of consideration. You want to smoke at the beach, fine, but have courtesy not to set up your belongings next to a family with small children.

farmland in the area, and markets like Duckie’s and No Frills on Broadway, along with Beach Plum Farm and Rea’s Farm on Stevens Street carry some of the freshest produce around. Head over West Cape May bridge to the Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal in North Cape May on Saturdays through August 25 from 9am1pm for local produce, baked goods, artisan crafts and more. 25. Parasail You don’t need to be a daredevil to rise 500 feet above the ocean, nor do you need a pair of wings. Parasailing has become a popular pastime that lets you soar above the coast and see Cape May from a perspective most people will never enjoy. It may be a view to die for, but we can assure you that you won’t be risking anything – the boat captains are coast guard certified and extremely safe. There are two great options to choose from. East Coast Parasail in Cape May at Utsch’s Marina, (609) 8988359; Atlantic Parasail at the Two Mile Landing restaurant and marina on Ocean Drive highway, (609) 5221869. 26. veteran’s casket flag is lowered each day from May until September. After the ceremony, grab some food at the Grille or enjoy the incredible deals in the gift shop. There’s a long beach strewn with Cape May diamonds, or play a round of minigolf at Sunset Beach! 28. The $10 tour package comes complete with a map and index for 96 historic buildings on 69 sites. Treat your kids to all the flashing lights, beeps, bells, buzzers and videogames, or relive your own childhood memories. Cape May Arcade has two locations, one on Beach Avenue and Gurney, the other at Beach Avenue and Jackson Street. 31. Higbee Beach It used to be a bit of a scandalous place (nude bathers – gasp!). Not anymore... or, not usually. Follow New England Road until it ends, walk the path — aka Mosquito Alley — towards the beach and enjoy some splendid shore. Just enjoy it in a swimming (not birthday) suit. 32. Fisherman’s Wharf Tour Take a guided tour of Fisherman’s Wharf at the Lobster

Activity Of The Week

N

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Cape May Carnival.

OTHING says “summer” like a carnival! Well, actually, that’s only true in America. The rest of the world associates “carnival” with the exotic, pre-Lenten festivals of places like Rio de Janeiro, with costumes, dancing and parades. The word itself may come from a Latin phrase for “farewell to meat.” Here at home, a carnival is a fair, a traveling collection of striped tents full of games and prizes. And the carnival comes to Cape May each Monday from 6pm-10pm on the Congress Hall lawn. In the late 19th century, carnivals and circuses traveled the nation, moving from town to town with games of skill, magicians, jugglers, and “magic lantern shows.” Games popularized at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago were added to carnivals, and people tried to win prizes by tossing rings around bottles, shooting rubber ducks, and ringing bells with hammers. By the 1930s, there were 300 traveling carnivals in the United States.

Congress Hall’s carnival games are geared for children. Try to make the frog hop onto the lily pad, ring the coke bottle, or win a pig race. The prizes look good — stuffed animals, wooden whistles, buckets, water guns — and not just because the hands clutching them are tiny. Early in the evening, little kids dominate the

lines, but soon older kids want to join in — they seem to watch and strategize first. Blue the Pig, the hotel’s mascot, is there to pose for photos. You can also stick your head through the vintage postcard cutout and have your picture taken. Get a balloon animal, have your face painted, or blow giant bubbles. Buy a “snack” that looks a lot like dinner and enjoy it in an Adirondack chair with an ocean view. When you’re done with games, stretch your beach blanket out on the lawn and watch a movie - a modern version of the magic lantern show. If you’re looking for carnival-like fun and it’s not Monday, try the Cape May Arcade or Family Fun Arcade, on the promenade, where you’ll find skee ball, pinball, and kiddie rides. The pre-movie activities for Movies on the Beach on Thurdsays feels like a carnival. Or, see the Cole Brothers Circus when it comes to Rio Grande on August 22 and 23, sponsored by the Rio Grande Fire Department. Call 1-888-332-5200 for ticket information. Thursday, August 9, 2012 Cape May National Golf Club has “three of the best holes in New Jersey” according to The Jersey Golfer and is nestled in 50 acres of private bird sanctuary. (Visit Cape May National at www.cmngc.com or call 609-884-1563.) But, if it’s your wedge that needs some work, Cape May Par 3 will let you play 18 holes for just $15.95. No bag? No problem. Cape May Par 3 rents clubs for just $1. Visit them at www.capemaypar3.com or call (609) 889-2600. 2. Bike Ride It’s no secret: Cape May is a biking town. Have you even tried to navigate the streets of Cape May during rush hour? It’s enough to make you want to start jogging to your destination. But have no fear; there are bike rentals that beat braking (and braking again, then honking, then braking once more). Try Cape Island Bikes at 727 Beach Avenue or 135 Sunset Boulevard, (609) 884-8011. 3. Nature Trails Next to the lighthouse in the Cape May Point State Park there are several trails weaving through ponds, dunes, marsh and forest. There are different levels of difficulty marked by colors and most of the trails have wooden walkways. Even on the longest trails, breathtaking scenes in a tranquil setting will make you wish it was longer. Just make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 4. Yoga Yoga on the beach is a beautiful thing, and Judy Heany of Balance Pilates, located at 600 Park Boulevard in West Cape May, has a whole dance card of choices. There are classes on the Jackson Street beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8am. Over and above that, you can join a Balance class at the Montreal Inn and the Inn of Cape May (see the ad on this page for more details). Call Judy Heany at 609-884-3001. Karen Manette Bosna also offers beach yoga at Cape May Point State Park on Saturday at 9:30am, and Tuesdays and

Thursdays at 8:30am. Classes are $10. Karen also holds Yoga on beach in Cape May behind Convention Hall on Saturdays at 8am for $5. Call 827-8886 for more info. 5. Tennis The William J. Moore Tennis Club — named after the first black (as well as the oldest) tennis pro in America — rents rackets, balls and courts. It’s located next to the Physick Estate on beautiful tree-lined Washington Street, and there are always a variety of local characters up for a game, match, or set. The courts are open to the public daily for just $10 per hour and a half. For more information call (609) 884-8986. 6. Horseback Riding At Hidden Valley Ranch, you can take lessons in the pastimes of heroes and kings under the watchful gaze of Nancy Hall and her daughter Angi Dickenson, who have nearly 70 years of combined equine experience. Saddle up. Call Hidden Valley Ranch at (609) 884-8205 for more information, or check them out on facebook. 7. Fishing Cape May is one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in the US. The sport fishing is big business, too... AND a whole lot of fun. South Jersey Marina boast the Murderer’s Row, a top-notch selection of boats with crews who know these waters better than anyone. Try the experienced team of Stalker Sport Fishing: (609) 231-9611, or the Miss Chris fleet: (609) 884-3939. For all your bait and tackle needs, stop by Jim’s Bait and Tackle on Route 109 by the harbor: (609) 884-3900. 8. Tidal Marsh Tour by Kayak Explore Cape May County’s most beautiful salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. It’s a great way to see nesting ospreys, herons, egrets and assorted crabs. There are two excellent options to choose from. Aqua Trails at 1600 Delaware Avenue in the Nature Center: (609) 884-5600, www.aquatrails.com, and Miss Chris Marina:

«

ROBIN is a loving 1 year old who was abandoned by her owner. However, she will surely charm the daylights out of you given the chance. She will not do well with cats or other dogs because she gets a little defensive. Also, her youthful energy and strength make her less suited to a home with young children. Though she has had some previous training, she needs more additional training. The adoption fee is $95.

«

CIROC is an enthusiastic girl who needs her new owner to be patient and give her consistent training, and of course some gentle discipline and daily exercise. She is loyal and obedient, and already knows common commands, so she could easily be trained to do more. Ciroc is recommended for a single person with no cats, dogs, or small children. Let Ciroc become a joy in your life. The adoption fee is $95.

«

MANNING is nervous when he first meets you, but after you take a bit of time with, he is a very sweet boy. He is also excitable and will get a bit mouthy when wound up. He does well with other dogs, but not cats. He would need a home without smaller kids, because he gets a little too enthusiastic. If you think he sounds like the right fit for you, stop on in the shelter and give him a second chance. The adoption fee is $95.

She’s never known love. You can change that.

Learn more about her by visiting her facebook page! Just type “Lindsey May” I rescued this puppy from death row in a Brooklyn shelter. She was a stray street dog found in Brooklyn. She was scheduled to be euthanized on July 30th. Although this 7 month old puppy has been through hell, she’s incredibly sweet. She just wags and licks!

If you want to give this little girl a loving home, please call Courtney at 215-519-5963.

ECENTLY a group of citizens has proposed changing WCM government to enlarge the governing body from three to five, along with reducing salaries to $5000 per commissioner. The stated reason for the proposal is to add to the diversity of views and to enhance the dialogue. Who isn’t for increased diversity and more discussion? Many solid citizens signed a petition to put this proposal on the ballot in November which, at first impression, seems sound. But when you scratch the surface and begin asking questions, the proposals may not be in the community’s best interests. Is bigger government better government? At a time when our country is asking for less government, why would a town of 1000 residents need more? Across New Jersey, the handful of towns with five-member commissions have populations between 12,500 and 58,000. Commissions with three members effectively serve two dozen communities with populations as high as 15,000. Will a five-member commission guarantee greater diversity? West Cape May is operating smoothly and efficiently. The commissioners regularly discuss and debate agenda items, then generally vote together, a positive, not a negative. If the commissioners lack a common vision as to where the municipality should be going, the possibility of governmental chaos is very strong. At its worst, WCM could be left with not one unified organization, but potentially three or five diverging organizations running in circles. We’ve seen it happen. Will five or more residents step up to serve on the governing body? Will you have a choice who is leading your town and what vision they have for community? Could a person (or persons) be elected with one “write-in vote?”

Commissioner Ramsey Geyer questions “if we’ll get five people to run when we have trouble getting three…” In the last election there were four candidates. Will reducing salaries help “attract a person that is more motivated by helping the community” as suggested by petition committee spokesman John Rowley? Will WCM see a brief reduction in commission salaries, only to be burdened with higher salaries and operating expenses for five members after two years, as the law allows? There is a lot time and responsibility that goes with a commissioner post and most people, understandably, aren’t willing to take it on. WCM is staffed primarily by part-time employees, with a full-time staff of six, giving great value for dollar. Will WCM need to hire a full-time administrator or additional staff, and at what cost? There are many more questions, but you get the idea. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to discuss where WCM is headed. There are many ways we can broaden the discussion and increase the diversity that far exceeds two more voices on a governing body. To start, come to commission meetings and speak up. Meetings are held the second Wednesday each month at 7pm and the fourth Wednesday monthly at 1pm. For those unable to attend, there’s phoning, e-mailing, writing or making an appointment so that your voice and viewpoint is heard. Check out westcapemay.us where you will find contacts, meeting schedules, budgets, minutes, community events and more. For my part I’m at Borough Hall most days and am willing to meet anyone at any time. Just give a call — 609-4082000. Pam Kaithern Proudly serving as Mayor of the Borough of West Cape May

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

’M WILLING to make a serious wager on this speculation: that you’ve undoubtedly wondered “why are there birds?” It’s a good question, right up there with the meaning of life, where to get the best burger, and why the chicken crossed the road. Insofar as you obviously have nothing important to do (why else would you be reading this column?), how about you and I examine this avisophical question so that you may attain greater (if somewhat dubious) enlightenment and I may meet my filing deadline with the punctilious editor of Exit Zero. First, to clearly define our subject: we’re discussing creatures cloaked in feathers that bring delight to our lives in more ways than you can shake a drumstick. So that’s one. Birds exist because they are good to eat. Not all birds, not at all times, but a fair portion of the world’s birds are protein packages worthy of peristalsis. A good example of a bird worth eating is the Turkey. This was Benjamin Franklin’s choice for our national bird.

A fine example of a bird not worth eating is the Bald Eagle. This, apparently, was everyone else’s choice for the national bird. What might we deduce from this? Little, perhaps. But it is clear Old Ben put epicurean excellence ahead of emblematic eminence. On the other hand, I’ve never tried Bald Eagle so I can’t really speak with any

authority on its table worthiness. I can only say that the bird is...inspiring. That’s another reason birds were put on earth. To inspire us to emulation. Did Philadelphia’s football franchise choose a chrysanthemum, or an artichoke, or a liver f luke to be its emblematic mascot? They did not! They chose the eagle. A bird whose attributes inspire us to achieve great things. Okay. Except for last year. What kind of “great things?” Like moving a misshapen ball up and down a short grass field better than the guys with a fish or a bison on their helmets. Incidentally, did you know that modern football helmets were designed following extensive engineering studies conducted upon of the craniums of woodpeckers? That’s right. Scientists figured that a bird that bangs it’s head against trees for a living must have something going for it. Of course, they do start with smaller brains (the woodpeckers, I mean). A woodpecker striking its bill against hard-

Bird Droppings ? From Page 119 wood does so with a measured force of 1,200 Gs. This compares to the black box in an aircraft which is designed to withstand a force of 1,000 Gs. How does this compare to the gridiron? On the field, just one helmet to helmet contact of a merit 100 G, will result in a trip to the bench with a concussion. Woodpeckers smack their heads against trees at a rate of about fifteen times per second. So how does the woodpecker manage to keep its brain from being pureed?
