Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Kim Price of Mt Ephraim, New Jersey. How long have you been visiting Cape May? Since I was in a playpen — and that was 39 years ago. Who are you normally with? My three kids, sometimes my husband, though he’s not a beach person, and my beach best friend, Nicola. Favorite thing about Cape May? By far, the beach. We stay at least eight hours a day, and we try to go almost every day. Least favorite thing? Crowds. And I don’t like it when people sit too close to me on the beach. Favorite restaurants? Panico’s, Cabanas and Lucky Bones. Favorite place to stay? Our home. We’re lucky — we stay down all summer. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Maybe just the crowds in the summer. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? Aleksey Moryakov. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I never win the contests, and enter all the time! What’s your T-shirt size? Large. Thanks!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Quotes Of The Week

Random Factoid

“A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin.” — H.L. Mencken “A woman should be like a single flower, not a whole bouquet.” — Anna Held “Dont’t send me flowers when I’m dead. If you like me, send them when I’m alive.” — Brian Clough

THE lotus was considered a sacred flower by ancient Egyptians and was used in burial rituals. This flower blooms in rivers and damp wetlands, but may lie dormant for years during times of drought, only to rise again with the return of water. Egyptians viewed it as a symbol of resurrection and eternal life.

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

New Faces, New Places THIS past weekend, we ran into a young couple on their honeymoon, experiencing Cape May for the first time. We like to think we don’t ever take our town for granted, but it never hurts to see it anew through the eyes of thrilled first-timers. We’re looking especially forward to this summer, because there are a few changes — new stores, new restuarants, and old favorites in new locations — that will have us all feeling just a little like those first-time visitors. The first is Cape Atlantic Books, opening hopefully the first week of May on the second floor of the City Center Mall (in the middle section of the mall proper). A town needs books (and we’re not just saying that because we’re in the book business). It’s not just the joy of reading we’re talking about... it’s the joy of browsing the shelves, flipping through their pages, and... smelling them. Owner/manager Tony Herr knows what we’re talking about. “When I was in high school,” he said, “we had lineograph machines that would run off photo copies. It sounds ridiculous, but the big thing was to smell the dittos when they came out of the machine, getting that blue streak on your nose. Books have that smell, too... I love the smell of a bookstore.” And that’s something you’re not going to get from a Kindle. (Tony told us he has one — he got it as a Christmas gift — and he likes the novelty of it... but “there’s just something about books...”) As you think about stocking up on your summer reading, Tony recommends Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann, it’s his all-time-favorite book. We recommend The First Resort, but we’re biased.

Near the new bookstore, owner/operator of George’s Place, John Karapanagiotis, and his brother, Pete, chef at the YB, are launching a new place called Pano, meaning “up” in Greek. It’s also on the second-floor of the mall, and the brothers are working with the bookstore on a way to create some second-floor synergy. “We’ll have leather couches and wi-fi,” John told us, “and counter-service... all healthy and fresh.” We called Pete for the details of the menu. “Salads, sandwiches, paninis, drinks, coffees, and maybe pastries,” he told us. “It’s still under development.” The brothers just decided they were opening two months ago. “It will be an interesting summer to say the least,” Pete said. And that’s not all this family has up its sleeve for this season. John’s brother-in-law, Mikey Tsiartsionis, is opening a smoothie and crepe place next door to George’s, where Blue Moon Pizza used to be. (Blue Moon has moved down the street, between Carney’s and Cabanas, and they’re only take-out and delivery right now... until they get an eat-in permit from the city around midsummer). Mikey’s place doesn’t yet have a name. “Regretfully, I have less than a week to come up with a name and submit for a mercantile licence,” he said. “We’re working around the clock on the details.” Despite the stress, Mikey is excited. “I have quite a sweet tooth.. I made all the cheesecakes for George’s... so I figured why not?” Why not, indeed. Speaking of sweet things, we caught up with Bonnie Offfit, owner of Bonnie’s Toppings, who’s taking a leave of absence from pediatrics (she’s been a docotor for 22 years) in order to operate her mini-chain of “self-surf ” frozen yogurt shops. There was

one in Avalon last year, and this season, there will be one in Stone Harbor and, starting May 3, one in Washington Commons. “It feels good to serve a treat that’s healthy,” she says. “It’s nutritious, with all the active cultures of yogurt, meaning it’s good for the digestive system. Plus, it’s a really fun shop.” That it is. The idea is that the customers do it all here — pull the level for the flavor they’d like, then top it however... with “any number of chocolate things,” gummy bears, sprinkles, a variety of syrups, Heath bar crunch, granola, coconut flakes, even fresh fruit from Tony’s produce. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Cape May Organic Market in a discussion of healthy food options. Tai Menz, the Inn of Cape May chef, and his wife Julie, of Victorious Antiques and Pink, opened the shop on February 17... you know, in all of their spare time. In addition to their other jobs, the couple is raising Piper, a beautiful 16-month-old baby girl. “It’s a lot right now,” Julie told us when we called, laughing at the same time because baby Piper was busy trying on jewelry at Pink. But the response has been “tremendous.” We can’t imagine why it wouldn’t be; the market carries a great variety, including free-range meat, bread baked in West Cape May, eggs from the Menzs’ backyard, vegan bath products, organic cleaning supplies, all-natural baby food (and diapers!), essential oils for both aromatherapy and eating (who knew?), and — our favorite — biodegradable bags for your puppy’s poop. (We go through a lot of enviornmentally un-friendly plastic while walking the Exit Zero family dogs.) But the coolest thing? If you have a rec-

THE WILD, WILD WEST CAPE MAY Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 ommendation for something you don’t see, go ahead and let the girl or guy behind the counter know. They’ll put it on a list and Tai will try and make sure it’s there in the future. “He gets a new delivery every week,” Julie told us. We heard a giggling child in the background when we called Mike Boschen also. He and his wife, Nicole Pense, have three kids, ranging in age from just over a month to not-quite five. And yet, kind of like Tai and Julie, they’ve got an enviable amount of energy. They opened Bliss ice cream in the Carpenter’s Square Mall last summer (it’s the only homemade, entirely organic ice cream on the island), and this year, they’re moving that shop to Park Boulevard. “There’s more exposure on Park Boulevard,” Mike told us, “great natural light, and most importantly, we’re in the same strip as some really quality businesses.” (Like the Organic Market we just told you about!) Mike and Nicole will be sharing their new space with another young couple, Hilary Keever and Contrano Rosettano, who recently moved to town from Italy. They’ll be running The Good Earth Organic Eatery, which is technically a macrobiotic café. And

Hilary assured us that’s a lot less scary than it sounds. “It’s simply about eating in a balanced way,” she told us, “which improves the immune system.” The cafe will offer organic vegetarian and fish options. Mike and Nicole’s other venture is Ella’s Good To Go, opening the last weekend in May. It’s an eatery next to Gecko’s that will serve breakfast, lunch and dessert items made with as many local ingredients as possible. Think handmade sandwiches made with fresh bread delivered daily, 100 percent juice smoothies, and their own blend of coffee and espresso brewed by the local Harry and Bean. “We’ll be open until 11pm,” Mike told us, “because we realize that some people look forward to their coffee after dessert.” So how is the couple managing with three kids and two businesses? “It’s not so bad,” Mike said. “Being a musician helps, because my daughters have gotten on the same schedule as me. If we go to bed at ten, everyone sleeps until eight easily.” Oh, did we not mention that Mike also makes time to pursue music? When we spoke with him, he had just returned from a gig in New York. He plays trombome, and you should look for him at the Mad Batter this summer. Then there’s the Red Store at Cape May Point, AKA the General Store and restau-

rant. We stopped in for breakfast on Easter, and our meal was... awesome. (We don’t use that word lightly.) The owners — Deanna Ebner of Quahog’s Seafood Shack in Stone Harbor, and Lucas Manteca, Executive Chef of The Ebbitt Room — obviously know their way around a kitchen, so there’s no surprise there. But the view at this place never ceases to surprise us, no matter how many times we’ve been. Quaint churches... beautiful Pavilion Park... there’s something magical about the Point. While we’re on the subject of views, there’s quite an entertaining one in development across the street from EZ Global Headquarters, in the space where Vanthia’s restaurant used to be. We’re talking about Sunset Liquors, which has a “rustic” theme, according to owner Tom O’Hara of Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. Or a “wild, wild west” theme, according to passersby. Have you seen the railings that make it look like an old saloon? They were shipped in from Colorado. And the barrels on the roof? They came from Hawk Haven winery. “People want to know when the cowboys and indians are coming,” Tom told us, “but they like it. And hey, it is the wild, wild West Cape May, after all.” In all seriousness, we like the corru-

Page 16 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 14 gated metal and reclaimed wood siding a great deal... the planks are old mushroom boards — used on mushroom farms — and they’re more than 30 years old. We took a tour of the inside, and the lights there are very cool (designed by Tom), and the adobe beige paint gives the place a nice, warm feel. So what’s Tom’s first celebratory drink going to be when construction is completed next month? (It’s been a tough process... Tom had to rip up three floors, two levels of walls and three roofs when he began construction.) “Oh, I don’t know,” he told us. “Probably Champagne.” Bottoms up, Tom. And we can’t forget about Stewart’s Root Beer on the mall, opening where Atlantic Books used to be on Mother’s Day Weekend. Patrick Rosenello is one of three partners, and he told us how excited he is to offer something different. “We are familyfriendly, a very causal dining experience, no alcohol,” he said, “and I think we will fill a nice gap in that regard. The restaurant will serve primarily hot dogs, hamburgers, root beer floats, salads, wraps, cheesesteaks and ice cream, with a complete breakfast menu as well, in a setting that is very 1920s. “The

Thursday, April 26, 2012 first Stewart’s was originally constructed in 1920, the brand was conceieved in 1924, and our restaurant architect has stuck with that... with some modern touches.” Another favorite casual dining spot — Capelleti & Sons Pizza & Steaks — will be opening across from Key West Taco, where Carli’s used to be. Does that name sound familiar? That’s because there’s also a Cappelleti Pizza next to Wawa, and one on the promenade. We called owner Dan Capelleti, or Cappy, as he’s affectionately called by his fanatical locals, to find out if he’s planning an empire here in Cape May. “That’s what eveyrone is saying,” he told us. “But if I hadn’t taken the space, someone else would have, and I figure, there might as well be pizza.” Fair enough. Contrary to the way this column is making it sound, there are also some pretty cool new businesses in town who will offer things other than food and drink this summer. Rowehouse Tile is one. They opened in June of last year on Carpenter’s Lane, but they’ve been flying under the radar since then. Donna Rowe and her husband, Wayne, do decorative art and tiling for everything from stair raisers to swimming pools along with custom address plaques. “We stumbled into it,” Donna

told us. “We’re self-taught. My husband is a teacher for Crest Memorial School and I am a barber by trade, but we started making this art as gifts and people loved it.” Our favorite thing? The paw prints from animals at the Cape May County Zoo. They’re actual molds taken of the lions and tigers and bears (oh, my) — and even the ostriches — while the animals are under anesthesia, getting necessary medical work done. Last but absolutely far from least, there’s White on Ocean Street, owned by interior designer of 13 years Viviane Rowan. She moved here permanently from Princeton in April (though she’s been coming to Cape May regularly for 19 years). We popped over last Sunday during what could only be considered a monsoon, and this reporter would have felt bad looking like a drowned rat in this beautiful space (one that sells “jewelry, table-top, clothes, body products, mirrors, lamps, and chandeliers,” all in various shades of white), if Viviane hadn’t been so darn welcoming. She told us about her recent buying trip in Paris, how important it is to her that caliber of shopping in Cape May match the caliber of dining and accommodation, and how inspiring it is to be so

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 close to the beach (you can see it from her shop). “What’s most important to me is to keep my eyes open for things that are different,” Viviane said, “things you’re not going to find anywhere elese.” So there you have it, folks. An outline of big things happening in our litle town. Oh, and if you’re wondering about Jackson Mountain Café being closed, fear not. We got in touch with manager Jeff Conrad, who told us that “there will be no changes this summer.” They’ve simply been redoing the kitchen floors and hooking up their plumbing to the city’s lines.

City’s Revival Comes Alive WHEN you hear “history museum,” it’s easy to think… dinosaurs. Fossils of animals who died eons ago. Artifacts from wars long over. Photographs of people long gone. This is what makes the island’s newest history exhibit — Cape May’s 20th Century Renaissance: From the Pages of the First Resort — so special. This time, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities is highlighting the recent past — the years before,

during, and after Cape May’s urban renewal movement. (For those desperately in need of a historical crash course, that’s the sixties through the eighties.) “The story of the Victorian period has been told in any number of ways,” says Michael Zuckerman, Director of MAC. “But urban renewal jumped out at us a story that hasn’t been told. And the community we see today was very much forged during this period.” We called Ben Miller — author of The First Resort, the book upon which the exhibit is based, and the man who’s done the “lion’s share” of the work, according to Zuckerman — to find out why these years were so important… and so contentious. “In the middle of the 20th century,” Ben told us, “Cape May was just another middle American place. While locals were spirited and proud of their town, the tourism industry was a shell of what it is today.” Wanting to revive their community, people began formulating plans for the future of Cape May, and two camps developed. Those impressed by our recently overhauled neighbor to the north — Wildwood — thought the way to improve Cape May was to demolish the number of neglected, boarded-up Victorian buildings serving

as eyesores around town and start from scratch, incorporating modern designs with modern conveniences. The other group advocated for historic preservation, citing the town’s Victorian roots as key to its revival. The battles were many. Today, it’s hard to believe some ensued at all… like the heated debate over whether a Washington Street Mall would benefit the city. Others feel very close to home… we’re thinking of the squabbling over the 1964 Convention Hall. “In the end,” Ben said, “the answer was found somewhere in between. At the exhibit, you will get to walk through Cape May’s renaissance, through the changes that took place.” For us, this is exciting, but we wanted to know how Ben is feeling, now that the April 27 opening — an opening that’s been two years in the making — is upon is. “Oh, God, there’s a lot of pressure,” he said, “particularly because we’re talking about a piece of history that people remember.” This week, we caught up with one of these people — Tom Carroll who, along with his wife, Sue, helped launch the bed and breakfast industry in Cape May. “In 1971,” he

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 told us, “I was in the Coast Guard, but I was going off of active duty. We purchased 28 Jackson Street — now the Windward House — for $38,000, and ran a rooming house.” (Your reporter wasn’t clear on the distinction between a rooming house and a B&B, so Tom explained that it’s the cheaper of the two options, with no private bath and “no beautiful décor.”) But on a trip to Europe, Tom and Sue fell in love with B&Bs.“We loved the idea of a place where you make friends and exchange ideas, have afternoon tea as a nice social hour, and use the foreign hosts as your guide to the community — we were convinced there had to be a market for this in America. ” Upon returning to Cape May, Tom and Sue purchased the Mainstay Inn, and brought these traditions to Cape May — just one of many big changes you’ll learn about in the Renaissance exhibit. What else you can expect to see? Video and never before seen pictures (“I didn’t want people to see the same photos they’ve been seeing in The First Resort for the last three years,” says Ben), and pieces of Cape May memorabilia (like a “very special” piece of stained glass from the Christian

Admiral, and the original copper kettle from the Original Fudge Kitchen). “We’re going to show people a side of Cape May they haven’t seen since the ’60s,” Ben said, “and it’s going to blow them away.” Admission to the exhibit, which runs through November 4, is free, as is admission to Friday night’s reception, which begins at 7pm. For more information, call 609-8845404.

A New View Of The Stage WE’VE seen a number of impressive shows at Cape May Stage, but none of them from 13 feet in the air, and we’re looking forward to it. As the theater prepares to open its 2012 season, it’s also preparing to reveal a former choir loft turned mezzanine (along with a state-of-the-art technical booth). “It’s beautiful,” said Nancy Mansfield, the theater company’s Executive Director. “There’s no center aisle, so you can sit center stage, and the view is just wonderful.” But it’s the increase in seating (the mezzanine has a row of 12 and a row of 14, meaning the theater now seats 136) that is most significant. “In the past, we’ve had to turn people away… sometimes 30, 40 people a night,” Artistic Director Roy Steinberg told

us. “For one show starring Michael Tucker, we had a waiting list of 100 people.” And the demand for tickets is only going to grow, as the theater will continue bringing big-name actors to Cape May. “This is the only venue in southern New Jersey that brings this caliber of people to the community… Tony award-winning people,” Roy told us. “Christine Ebersole is coming this summer, for instance. When she performs at the Café Carlyle [in New York City] it’s $90 just to sit down, with a $50 drink minimum. And Cape May Stage is a far more intimate venue.” And a far cooler venue, we’re willing to bet, once you know its history. For a crash course, we called Dave Clemans, local preservationist and “the church’s angel,” according to both Nancy and Roy, because “he’s a man of enormous depth” who is “largely responsible for the way the theater looks today.” Dave was a key player in transforming the building from “nearly derelict” to “prime condition” about seven years ago, and he was most important for this recent renovation. “I’m not certain why anyone would call me an angel,” Dave told us. “A devil, per-

Page 22 Talk Of The Town ? From Page 20 haps.” But we know better; Dave’s the contractor who’s frequently done work for Cape May stage pro-bono (as is the case with the new information booth he’s currently working on for the theater), or at “bare-bones cost” (as was the case with the technical booth and mezzanine). “It gives me a sense of purpose,” he told us, “which is important as you get older, because you can’t keep carousing around the bars.” Funny, but we know the reasons behind Dave’s generosity run deeper. “I love architectural history,” he said, “and this church is remarkable.” It was built in 1850, but with a technique — heavy timber framing — that would have been used even 150 years earlier. It’s done in the Victorian exotica nomenclature (notice the Middle Eastern elements which the Victorians loved to borrow… who knew?). “There’s no other building even remotely like it in Cape May,” Dave told us. To check out the mezzanine yourself, you’ll want to purchase tickets for the first show of the season, Uncle Jacques’ Symphony, running May 11 to June 15. Or stop by the free Meet the Mezzanine event happening

Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Cape May Stage on May 20, from 12-2pm. It will be a good chance to pat Dave Clemans on the back, although we can’t guarantee he’ll like it. “I’ll be there, but I don’t know how much I’ll like the attention,” he said. “Every effort has already been returned to me in people’s appreciation for the theater. It’s been a pleasure and a thrill.”

Bloom Where You’re Planted CAPE Island citizens are a flora and faunafriendly bunch — consider that an island of this size can support two thriving flower shops, after all. We popped into Cape Winds on Broadway for a look around, where owner Debbie Downes told us they are heading into their busiest season right now. “Between Mother’s Day, weddings and proms, May is just really, really busy.” Mother’s Day, apparently, is the biggest barn-burner of all flower days. “Last year, the day before Mother’s Day,” Debbie says, “we had our busiest single delivery day, with 159 local deliveries alone.” The cool thing about Cape Winds is that there is also a full gift shop here, with everything from CDs to food items (perfect for the picnic baskets they sell) to bridal accessories, ornaments and

photo albums. “We love having the extra space for the shop. It’s nice for people to be able to send a gift along with their flowers.” Kate’s Flowers, over on Park Boulevard, is a quintessential small-town shop, where everybody knows your name. Nothing says you’re shopping in a small town like a full bookcase and a sign inviting you to help yourself to whichever book appeals to you. Owner Kate Papale and her crew have been running this busy little enclave for nearly 30 years, and she says that she’s done flowers for baby showers and then flowers for that same baby’s prom — or even wedding. She knows her regulars well enough to know what people want. “Flower-buying is kind of cyclical,” she told us. “Hydrangeas are big this year, and Gerber daisies. And carnations seem to be back, even in weddings. I remember a couple of years ago, I couldn’t give them away.” Knowing your customers is key when you’ve been in business this long. “He’s since passed away, but we used to have a customer we called Wednesday Don. He was here every week, buying cut flowers for himself. People buy flowers here because they’re important to them. And they’re important to us.”

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

C

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... by Kate Chadwick

ITY Council got underway a little late this evening, at 7:08pm, as members apparently arrived at 6:30 and immediately went into closed session to discuss “Contract Negotiations — Performing Arts,” according to the agenda. Hmm. Wonder what that was all about? Nailing down the Philly Pops, perhaps? We also noted that none of the council members looked too happy upon the commencement of the meeting; then again maybe we’re taking that personally. Also, we were acting like kids in the back of the bus with fellow press members immediately prior to the start of the meeting, discussing such important topics as missing socks. Ahem. On with the proceedings. 7:08 – City Clerk Diane Weldon, looking sharp in a simple black dress, reads the proclamation declaring that Arbor Day will be April 27, 2012. 7:10 – In keeping with the arbor theme, Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman (dapper in a reddish checked shirt and navy jacket, no tie*) discusses the “space tree,” which was planted

last week on the grounds of the Colonial House Museum on Washington Street. This was done by representatives of the city and the Shade Tree Commission, from a seedling that has been to space and back, courtesy of NASA’s Space Shuttle Columbia. (I barely get out of the county, and now there’s a tree down the street that’s been in outer space. Really?) Mr Wichterman advises that a plaque has been ordered commemorating the event and will be posted at the site within a couple of weeks. He thanks the press for their coverage of the event, and says we will all look forward to the tree grow-

ing over the years. *Wardrobe disclaimer: if a participant’s pants are not noted here, it is not to be assumed that they are not actually wearing pants, only that this reporter was unable to discern the color for any number of reasons. 7:11 – Mayor Ed Mahaney, in a gray jacket, pale blue shirt and dark spotted tie (please see Pants Disclaimer above), announces an ordinance for second reading and consideration for adoption: 249-2012, Ordinance to Amend Chapter 10, Article XXXVI of the City Code to add members to the Advisory Committee on Tourism (whew). Basically, the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs have been added to the groups serving on the Advisory Committee, bringing the grand total to 17. Councilmember Bill Murray, in navy slacks and a blue checked shirt, moves to adopt, and Councilmember Deanna Fiocca, in jeans and a flowing black top, seconds the motion. All vote yes. 7:12 – Ordinances for Introduction, read by Clerk Weldon, as follows: 250-2012 – Bond ordinance for various water

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 31 and sewer utility improvements of the city to the tune of $1,263,000 and the authorization of the issuance of $1,113,000 in bonds or notes. Wichterman moves, Councilmember Terri Swain, in a black dress, seconds. All vote yes, Clerk Weldon announces a public hearing on this will be held on May 15. 251-2012 – Bond ordinance providing for beach utility improvements in the amount of $300,000 and authorization of issuance of $300,000 in bonds or notes. Wichterman moves, Swain seconds. All vote yes. 252-2012 – Bond ordinance for capital improvements, appropriating the aggregate amount of $2,080,000 and the issuance of $1,425,000 in bonds or notes. (Reporter’s note: there were several “aggregates”, “therefores” and “thereofs” in the above — please insert as you see fit.) Mr Wichterman moves to accept the ordinances, Councilmember Swain seconds, all vote yes. We are actively willing ourselves not to get excited about how things are moving along at such a nice clip here tonight, because usually when we make this observation, even in our own head, the proceedings immediately hit a brick wall. 7:16 – Time for resolutions, otherwise

known as the Jack Wichterman show. We love to hear him read these, actually. If this Deputy Mayor business doesn’t pan out for him, we think he should consider a radio gig – he’s got the voice for it. (It’s nearly as mellifluous as that of our colleague from the Herald, Jack Fichter. Nearly.) 102-04-2012 – Refund of an overpayment of taxes after an appeal. “That’s a simple one,” notes Mr Wichterman. 103-04-2012 – Purchasing of janitorial supplies. This was done in bulk in an arrangement with other municipalities as a cost-saving measure, Mr Wichterman observes. 104-04-2012 — Award of a bid to Sturdy Bank for the ATM at Convention Hall. Mr Wichterman notes that the city does most of its

banking with Sturdy, and “we’re lucky to have them.” 105-04-2012 – Authorization of a change order for Ogren Construction having to do with doors, lighting and conduit work at Convention Hall. Mr Wichterman notes that Ogren has been a pleasure to work with over the past year. He also notes that this additional work does not affect the Convention Hall budget allotment. 106-04-2012 – Authorization of change order for Arose, Inc. for cable at Convention Hall. This has to do with additional cable work. 107-04-2012 – Approval to submit a grant application to the New Jersey Department of Emergency Management for emergency communications. A pre-application has already been submitted. 108-04-2012 – Authorization of a utility bill adjustment due to a catastrophic occurrence, apparently a flood. This is also pretty routine stuff, according to Mr Wichterman. 7:19 – Mr Wichterman interrupts himself to apologize, stating that Councilmember Murray had wanted to comment on two of the resolutions. With regard to Resolutions 105 and 106, Mr Murray gives a shout-out for the record to construction engineers at Convention Hall, Hunter Roberts, and to Matt Steiner in par-

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 32 ticular. Mr Murray explains that he did not fully understand the specifics of the change orders, so he went down to visit Mr Steiner at the Convention Hall site, and Mr Steiner apparently set him straight very satisfactorily. 109-04-2012 – Same as 108, utility bill adjustment due to a catastrophic occurrence, different utility customer. 110(A)(B)-04-2012 – Payment of bills. As regular readers of this column will recall, this is broken out to “A” and “B” so that payments to Swain’s Hardware can be paid separately, with Councilmember Swain abstaining from voting on that. 111-04-2012 – Bid and subsequent award for landscaping contract work at Convention Hall. Mr Wichterman notes that the city “did advertise this” (and we here at Exit Zero know this, because we were emailed a copy of the bid. We did not bid, as our time budget for landscaping projects is quite limited.). Mr Wichterman notes that one local company did bid on this contract, but was not successful. He further mentions that the contract amount is $29,000, but never does name the company that was awarded the contract. We later learned that the contract went to Greenscape Landscaping

of Moorestown, New Jersey. Mayor Mahaney makes a motion to accept, Murray seconds, all vote yes. 7:22 — Clerk Weldon reports on the various meeting minutes she has received. 7:23 – Mayor Mahaney asks if there is any new business, and City Manager Bruce MacLeod, in a bright blue short-sleeved button-down shirt and checked dark blue tie (Pants Disclaimer), gives a brief Convention Hall update. He reports that the bamboo flooring installation has commenced and is about a third of the way completed. He further reports that the tile in the entry solarium is being installed now, and that the carpeting should be installed by the end of the week. He notes that the exterior of the building is now “substan-

tially completed,” with tiling on the face of the building underway, and that railings should be installed by end of next week. On another note, Mr MacLeod notes that the repair/replacement of the roof at City Hall began this past Monday, that they are working (loudly, apparently) on a section-by-section basis, and expect to have the project completed in three to four weeks if the weather cooperates. Mr MacLeod further reports that the three-part ADA improvement projects are moving right along, with work being done, as previously discussed here, on the Franklin Street School, the beachfront ramp at Third Avenue Pavilion and the widening project at Trenton Avenue projected to be completed in the next two weeks. He mentions that the Carpenter’s Lane project is “coming along,” and expected to be completed in the next few weeks. 7:27 – Mayor Mahaney asks if there is any further business. City Attorney Anthony Monzo, ever-dapper in a dark suit, pale yellow shirt and striped tie, answers in the negative. City Clerk Weldon advises that she has received a letter from Mickey and Mitzi Blomkvest of Cape May Court House, with the request that it be read into the record. This request is made because apparently the Star & Wave refused

to publish the letter. (We did not realize that a letter that has been refused publication by a newspaper can then be read into public record, but now we know.) The letter is a response to a recent editorial piece written by Ben Miller and printed in the Press of Atlantic City. 7:32 – Mr Wichterman comments that Mr Miller has made mistakes with regard to various things regarding Convention Hall, that he hopes no one is paying attention to him, and he thanks the Blomkvests (who are not present) for their letter. Then he goes on to report that he recently made a trip to Trenton to discuss the current mode of education funding for the regional school system and its “gross inequities.” He advises that currently Cape May is paying $72k per child, with the projected figure for next year at $80k. He says that Cape May is one of three regional systems burdened with an unfair educational funding issue, and discusses the need for working with the state towards a change in the funding formula. Mr Wichterman advises that he will stay on top of this issue, and will be happy to take trips to Trenton, “in a company car” because it “keeps him out of trouble at home,” which elicits a chuckle. Councilmember Murray thanks Mr Wichterman for his dedication to this issue, and says he is hopeful of a positive outcome. 7:40 — Mayor Mahaney thanks the Washington Street Mall merchants for the success of the Easter Fashion Stroll, which was a great event with over 100 contestants. He singles out the folks at the Original Fudge Kitchen, as well as Dairy Queen’s Kelly Capone-Sawyer (one of this reporter’s favorite people) for giving the kids off all ages free ice cream and candy. 7:41 – The public portion of the meeting is opened, and Michael Clark of Sturdy Savings Bank, in a black suit and light blue shirt and patterned tie, takes

the podium to thank council for the ATM contract at Convention Hall. Councilmember Murray thanks Mr Clark, saying Sturdy has always supported Cape May and is a good neighbor. Mayor Mahaney also thanks the other bidders, Sun Bank and PNC. 7:42 – Jim Wyatt of Windsor Avenue takes the podium in khaki pants and a very cool black and white patterned shirt. Mr Wyatt say that he is appalled by the lack of attendance at council meetings (including, presumably, this one, where he is now the only audience member). He advises council “I am back.” (And we are glad, as we are lonely here sometimes.) He then directs a question to Bruce MacLeod about a “relief ratio report” that Chief Leusner, of Middle Township has been using, and wonders whether Cape May has one. This apparently relates to coverage for vacationing police and fire department members. He says that he is 76 years old (shut UP – he so does not look it), and that he will not be running around climbing ladders and chasing criminals, so something should be in place to make sure fire and police officers are on the streets at all times. He also encourages Mr MacLeod, whom he says he has known for 20 years, to be more outspoken, more outgoing, and more accountable, and that he will encourage more people to go directly to him (Mr MacLeod, that is) with their issues and concerns. He mentions that he agrees that Convention Hall should be called Convention Hall, as it has been thusly named for 95 years, and says, “Let’s go for 100 years.” He again mentions how appalled he is by the lack of voter involvement in council meetings, and apologizes if he has offended anyone. 7:48 – Deputy Mayor Wichterman thanks Mr Wyatt, then says that he really cannot believe Mr Wyatt did not mention that the Kiwanis Club is auctioning off a silver Mustang convertible, with tickets available for only $100. Mr Wyatt says that he bought five tickets, as he does every year. 7:49 – Over and out.

The Movie Column

S

By Dottie Knapp, President of the Cape May Film Festival

POILER Alert: Mirror, Mirror uses a Bollywood dance scene as its big finish. You forgive the finale when you realize Indian director Tarsern Singh is in charge. He is known for his music videos and TV commercials (think Pepsi’s “We Will Rock You” campaign), and you can see why he felt the need to sneak in one musical number. He is also known for colorful settings and lush costumes, all of which you will see in this film —and might be the main (if not only) reason to see it. Other highlights of this retelling of Snow White are the dwarfs, who are all highly entertaining. Another highlight: Armie Hammer’s portrayal of Prince Alcott. More specifically, the highlight may be Armie Hammer’s bare chest — seeing this is worth the price of admission. Remember when Brendan Fraser made movies shirtless? How I miss those days. Excuse me… I digress. And I’m not the only expert on this: the Queen, played by Julia Roberts, admires Hammer’s physique as well.

Armie Hammer shirtless is one of few highlights of Mirror, Mirror, says Dottie Knapp Roberts and Nathan Lane can’t seem to make comedy magic as the Queen and her toady — they’re just tedious. One of the better scenes is when she has beauty treatments to keep up her young appearance. I was surprised to learn that many of the treatments are ones you can get,

including bird poop to tighten skin, a chocolate mask, snake massage, and tiny fish to nibble calluses from her feet. Don’t try the last if you’re going hiking; according to a friend, she couldn’t walk comfortably for a week. The Queen’s lips are plumped by bee stings; don’t try it at home, although said sting couldn’t be any worse than paying $8 to see this movie in a theater. Wait for Red Box. Reader Reaction: Catherine Walton of Weddings by the Sea disagrees with Tom Sims’ review of The Hunger Games. Catherine writes: “You have this all wrong. This is not about teenagers killing each other for sport. This is about a heroine — an accidental Joan of Arc. You [can’t review the film] until you’ve read the book. In fact you should read the entire trilogy, then we can talk.” Catherine receives two passes to our film festival for replying to Sims—and while he respects her opinion, she might have to wait a long, long, long time to have that triolgy talk with him. Sleeping Around

Exit Zero tests the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Bayberry Inn WHERE IS IT? The Bayberry Inn is located at 223 Perry Street, and it was voted “Best Cape May B&B for walking to shops and restaurants,” so that should give you a pretty good idea of it’s prime location. WHAT IS IT? The inn is a mellow yellow carpenter’s gothic style home that has two separate building dates. The back section was built in 1800. In 1856, a twentythree-year-old carpenter named Joseph Key Williams from Philadelphia came to Cape May and fell in love with a woman named Sarah. Her parents gifted them the house, which he turned and added to. WHO RUNS IT? The Bayberry Inn is run by Toby and Andy Fontaine, who are natives of the area. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are four rooms and one magnificent suite. WHAT’S THE VIBE? It’s homey. You feel welcome and relaxed. (Being able to hear the ocean doesn’t hurt.) And it’s also roomy. Our third-f loor suite had a sleeping area, and an entirely separate sitting area, with a pull-out couch. (You can sleep four up there.)

AMENITIES? You’ll love the sunny front porch, the outdoor shower, the beach chairs, and free wi-fi. But our favorite part was the sani-jet tub in our room. We swiveled our 37-inch television in the directio of the tub and spent the evening feeling pretty pampered. There was also a minifridge, perfect for chilling the bottle of Chardonnay you may want to bring into the tub with you. (Glasses are included.) WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? All the beds at The Bayberry Inn are queens, with cotton sheets that are between 400 and 600 thread-counts. We slept so soundly, we

CAPE MAY

The

w a v e

silenced our alarm six times. WHAT’S FOR BREAKFAST: What’s not for breakfast might be a better question. Toby, the chef, served fresh but canteloupe and strawberries, a baked western omelet with bacon, and delicious banana chocolate muffins for dessert. We were going to take them with us, but we couldn’t resist eating them — two of them — right then and there. INSIDER TIP: One, guests under twelve are not accommodated, so it’s a great place for a romantic getaway. (We met some very happy honeymooners.) Two, check out the beautiful exotic orchids scattered around the house. Growing them is a hobby of Toby and Andy. RANDOM FACT: That architect we mentioned earlier? He was also responsible for the engineering of Beach Avenue... which he did for free. Pretty cool, eh? He was also a three-term mayor during the Civil War era. EACH week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is DJ Erdman, who was ambushed at Cape Fitness. Where are you from? I live in Cape May. Occupation: I’m not a DJ, I’m a dad. What were you doing when we interrupted? I’m just working out. When is the last time you got some flowers? I’ve never gotten flowers before, but this is really cool because tomorrow is my birthday. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY CAPE WINDS

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? My name is Robert — no last name, please. Where are you from and what do you do? I’m from Connecticut, and I’m a writer. And what were you doing when we interrupted you? We just finished our Key West Tacos combination platter. We’re getting ready to climb the lighthouse and don’t want to go up all those steps on an empty stomach. How often do you come to Cape May? This is actually my first time here. What do you think of Exit Zero [we gave him a copy, with George Mestehazy on the cover]? Looks good. And my parents came from Hungary, so I can tell you that ‘Mesterhazy’ means ‘master house’ in Hungarian. This week’s issue theme is “flower.” Do you have a favorite flower? Yes, sunflowers. Maybe I’m anthropomorphizing, but they seem so human, with those faces. [Reporter’s note: “Anthropomorphizing” — he IS a writer!] Interview by Kate Chadwick PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m in the process of purchasing my first house, and I’ve been working with a local real estate agent who was highly recommended by a coworker. However, I’m afraid I’ve developed a huge crush on him. Is this totally inappropriate? — House Hunter Dear Hunter Well, dear, that depends on several variables. “Are you both available?” is the question that immediately leaps to the Answer Lady’s mind, simultaneously with “Is the interest mutual?” Other variables include whether or not you are a psychopathic stalker, and if you also have similar feelings about your doctor, dentist, and the guy who pumps your gas. Something else to think about is whether you are so enamored of your agent that it is impeding your housebuying judgment. If you would willingly look

which have started that way. Dear Answer Lady We just bought a small vacation condo in Cape May. It came furnished, but we didn’t like the furnishings, so we sold everything to start with a clean slate. Now I’m feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of making this empty space a home. My husband is no help — if it were up to him it would be decorated with a 40-inch TV and a recliner. Help. — Empty House

at million dollar houses in the Point with Sir Sells-a-Lot when you should be concentrating on a modest cottage in North Cape May, perhaps you should reassess your choice of Realtors. There are plenty of excellent professionals in Cape May from which to choose (many of them female… the Answer Lady is just saying). If none of the above apply, then of course it’s possible you’ve made a love connection with your agent. It’s not unlike meeting someone at work, and certainly there are many happily-ever-after stories

Dear House Breathe, gentle reader, breathe. Start with one room, preferably the smallest, usually the bathroom. Browse the towels, shower curtains and bathroom accessories at Cape May Linen. Once you get the bathroom done, do the kitchen, and so on. Or, contact Dragonfly Interiors, or head over to White, the new shop on the corner of Ocean and Hughes, for either a consultation or just idea-gathering. Sometimes a little inspiration is all it takes. And if your husband needs a table for that recliner, check out the beautiful one-of-a-kind side tables at the Exit Zero Store and Gallery.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H, I remember when Cape May was Official Flower Capital of America. So proud were we of the blooms that we passed a law stating that every citizen had to have at least 40 percent of their person covered in live plants whenever they stepped outdoors. Dear friends, let me describe the scene on a typical spring day, when stepping out on the promenade… I would often wear my daisy waistcoat, a silk affair woven with rich loam, so hundreds of daisies would wave as I walked along. On my feet were fine brogues with poppies growing from the toes, and on my head was a top hat with a sunflower sprouting: I was ten feet tall, and pretty as a picture. And I was never the most eye-catching sight on the Promenade: there were ladies whose dresses comprised 30 feet of blooms, whose parasols were topped by rare orchids and whose garters (oh, how my heart beats at the thought) were a twine of live ivy (non poison). And the chaps, well, you have never seen so many hats, from wide-brimmed boaters awash with pan-

sies, to trilbies sporting a single small rose, to moss-covered bowlers. My good friend Wally Herbert even had a specially rigged Stetson that was a full four feet from front to back and that used to revolve automatically to give its bed of chrysanthemums the best exposure to the sun. Sadly for Wally, he was crossing Beach Avenue one morning when a cloud passed in front of the sun, his hat then rotated wildly to compensate, and a large bumblebee missed its landing spot, lighting instead on Wally’s nose, whereupon,

enraged at the lack of pollen, it stung him, causing him to stumble under the wheels of a trolleybus. Luckily for Wally, his jacket — upon which a score of tiny dwarf oaks grew — took the impact, but he got rather a fright and there was manure everywhere. And the children: well, even the littlest was a riot of color and new growth, and one merely had to strike a passing child once as they ran past to dislodge a wonderful carnation for a lapel, or a small apple for lunch. And did I mention the buildings? Not a single square inch was unplanted, from Congress Hall’s remarkable lawn that ran up every wall and across the whole roof, before going down the back again. And every house was competing with the next, a dazzle of blooms and leaves. Tragically, the population of bees soared until it reached three billion; the sound of buzzing was so loud people had to shout to be heard, and the moment a particularly fine pair of pants bloomed, the wearer would gain 40 pounds in weight from visiting bees. When Fall came, the petals wilted, never to be replaced.

Activity Of The Week

W

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Spring Festival.

INTER was a gentle delight this year, yet spring fever is epidemic in Cape May. Luckily, you can treat your symptoms at the Spring Festival, presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) and the Cape May Chamber of Commerce, April 28-May 6. “Spring fever” is an odd phrase. In Victorian times, it was used to describe the laziness warm weather can bring. Residents of Victorian Cape May earned their laziness, as they probably suffered from mild scurvy each spring, after a winter without vegetables. We may not be any more productive than our Victorian counterparts, but, with fruits and vegetables available all year, without their excuse. In modern usage, “spring fever” describes restlessness and excessive energy — so we’re still unproductive, but we’re having more fun. Need a cure for your spring fever? Try combining chocolate and beer — beer authority Gary Monterosso hosts a sampling of beers and chocolates at the Inn of Cape May on Saturday, April 28. Tickets are $30.

The Spring Festival Craft & Antique Fair will be held at the Physick Estate on Saturday, April 28 Or, spend the day as a judge in the Sweet & Savory Smackdown — tour a selection of historic homes, sample a signature snack at each, and cast your vote. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for children. Dancing can help you burn a lot of energy, and MAC offers an all-inclusive Vintage Dance Weekend package, April 28-29.

Dress in your (optional) Victorian finery and learn to cut a rug — the combination package is $95. You can purchase tickets separately — $45 for workshops, $35 for the Vintage Ball, and $25 for the Tea Dance. Workshops start at 9:30am Saturday, with a break for lunch, and more classes in the afternoon. The Vintage Ball is at 8pm Saturday night, and the Tea Dance is 1-3 on Sunday. Refreshments will be served. All events are held at the Chalfonte. If spring makes you want to redecorate, check out the Spring Festival Craft & Antique Fair on April 28 from 11-4. The grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate become a marketplace of vendors, and admission is free. Admission is also free for the new Carriage House gallery exhibit, “Cape May’s Twentieth Century Renaissance,” opening Friday, April 27, at 7pm. Ben Miller’s book, The First Resort, is the inspiration for this collection of rare photographs, artifacts and video. For more information on all Spring Festival events, visit capemaymac.org, or call 609-884-5404. Although you’re likely to see Dr. Physick, no prescription is required. I’ve been here for four years. Best thing about the job? The candy. And we get to eat whatever we want. What do you recommend here? I always recommend the macaroons — they are out of this world. And the toffee-covered pecans are great, too. What’s your OTHER dream job? My other dream job would defiitely have to be retirement. Favorite thing about Cape May? The beach, no question about it. Everybody probably says that, but it’s where you can always count on finding me. When I’m not here, of course. Interview by Kate Chadwick WANT TO NOMINATE AN EMPLOYEE OF THE WEEK? LCMR High School junior Nicole Sangillo helped the girls’ lacrosse team secure a win over the dominant Middle Township Lady Panthers. With the score tied at 13-13 with 40 seconds left to play, Sangillo stepped up to take a penalty shot and won the game. “It really felt like the game was on my shoulders,” said Sangillo. The win was huge for Sangillo and her teammates, and she said, “It felt good to help beat Middle for all the seniors on our team.” Not only is Sangillo a star on the lacrosse field, but she’s equally talented in basketball and soccer. She received honorable mention AllCape Atlantic League for basketball and first team All-Cape Atlantic for soccer. When asked how she manages all three varsity sports every year and is still able to maintain straight As, Sangillo replied, “Time management.” Sangillo’s parents, Robert and Julia, of North Cape May, are both teachers, who stress the need to do well in school first and foremost. Sangillo plans to play either soccer or lacrosse in college. Soccer is her strongest sport, but she says, “My love for lacrosse is starting to grow.” Sangillo is a role model for students academically and athletically for all of LCMR. She will surely reach all of her future goals. BY JALEN RENNA/ PHOTOGRAPH BY JASON HOBAN

KRINGLE is waiting patiently for a forever home. He’s a younger, very energetic boy who is very strong. Because of his energy levels, he’ll need a bit of training, and would be best in a home without kids, or at least with older kids. He loves food, and this could be used to train him. If you think you can spare the time and love for a fella like Kringle, stop in to the shelter and give him a second chance. The adoption fee is $95.

PETEY is a 1-year-old pit bull with the good looks and charm of his Little Rascals namesake. He’s playful, affectionate and mindful of his manners, and knows a number of commands. Because of his size and strength, Petey is not recommended for a family with small children, cats or dogs. If you want a companion who will keep you active as well as smiling, Petey is your boy. The adoption fee is $95.

«

CIROC is an enthusiastic female pit bull, around 18 months old. She is an extremely active but submissive girl who needs patient and consistent training, gentle discipline and daily exercise. Ciroc knows some commands and could easily be trained to do more. She is recommended for a single person or family with older children and no other cats or dogs. Let Ciroc become a joy in your life. The adoption fee is $95.

n Monday, May 21 (a mere month away!) Second Stage begins with Flywheel, Shyster & Flywheel, the 1932 radio show that introduced the Marx Brothers to America. This hilarious comedy gives historical context to Uncle Jacques’ Symphony, coming soon to our main stage. Last season, our patrons loved Say Goodnight, Gracie and visiting with George Burns as created by Joel Rooks. In that show, George Burns made reference to some kids named Arthur, Leonard, and Julius who “you knew as Groucho, Harpo and Chico.” This season, we bring the antics of the Marx Brothers to our stage. On May 20 from 12-2pm, all are invited to our Meet The Mezzanine community party celebrating our new space and season. We’ll give tours of the theatre, as well as the technical booth and backstage areas, usually off-limits to the audience. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will greet everyone and talk about the upcoming season. You’ll also learn about signing up your children or grandchildren for Discovery Summer Theatre Camp. The theatre has a marvelous program to help children learn to trust their instincts and gain confidence in speaking and performing before others, giving them a cultural knowledge that will benefit them for life. This year we’ve hired a specialist who has run the Milton Hershey Theatre Department for 17 years. She’ll bring popular culture to Moliere, Shakespeare, Ibsen, and Chekhov. Her individualized attention to each child has us dividing

Young thespians will love Discovery Summer Theatre Camp this July the camp into age groups, with 9 to 12-year olds meeting in the mornings, 13 to 16-yearolds in the afternoons. Bird Droppings

H

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

ERE’S a letter to the Guy I Met On The Platform platform yesterday. What platform? Hardly matters, he won’t be reading this. The platform was just one of thousands overlooking great natural areas around the planet. There were lots of birds around, and this is pretty normal, too. Birds cover the planet. There are billions of individual birds of 10,000 species, each unique and fascinating in its own right. Nobody has ever seen them all. Mr-Guy-I-Met-OnThe-Platform, you could be first to achieve this milestone, the first to travel the planet and see every feathered element. Now to address your question. Yes, your question, Mr or Ms Reader. Why7 would anyone would want to see every bird on the planet? It’s a good question because, in truth, in order to enjoy birds, you don’t need to collect them all. The herons and egrets in the South Cape May Meadows; Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Buntings in Higbee Beach; Oystercatchers and Willets behind Wildwood Crest do

pretty much what all the other birds on the planet do. Establish territory, court, mate, raise young, feed, try not to get eaten. In a sense, it’s true to say: “You’ve seen one bird, you’ve seen them all.” But you could say the same thing about a work of art, a beautiful face, a sunrise. One of the things that makes birds in general so engaging is birds in particular.

Each species has its own habits, personality, endearing quirks. Bird watching is not just a matter of pinning the name to the bird, it’s about enjoying birds. Which is the point of this article. You see, Mr. Guy I Met On The Platform, you and I are fundamentally alike. You had no idea what birds were all around us but you pointed them out to me. You saw my binoculars, concluded correctly that I was interested in birds, shared the results of your reconnaissance. Fact is, I already knew about the birds. What I was more interested in was your interest in them. You confirmed what I’ve always believed: that just about everyone likes birds. The difference between you and me is that I know them and you simply enjoy them. So far. My point to you is that enjoying birds is just the first step into a world of discovery and wonder. Knowing birds creates a bond and an intimacy that surpasses simple appreciation. It’s the difference

Bird Droppings ? From Page 81 between reading the cover of a book and knowing the story within, between a wink across the bar and a breath-suspending kiss on the beach. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating about the kiss. But f lirting with birds isn’t half as fun as being intimate with them. The first step is learning bird names. You do this and it makes birds real, it makes them familiar. It takes “that’s nice” and spins it into “that is soooo cool.” You, Mr. Guy I Met On The Platform, are stuck in “that’s nice.” You’re on the verge of “that’s soooo cool.” And while I can point this out to you, it’s up to you to take the next step. Only you can buy a bird field guide that helps you pin the name to the bird. Only you can stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory, chat with the folks behind the counter, learn where to go, how to use binoculars, what time the morning birding field trip begins. Only you. My job is to tell you that these possibilities exist, which I have. So will you go through life settling for “that’s nice?” Or what? P.S. The birds around you were Boat-tailed Grackles, Black-crowned Night-Herons, Brown Thrasher, Eastern

The first step to seeing as many birds as you can starts with seeing one Kingbird, Yellow Warbler. Only 9,995 to go. Spend a week in Cape May and we’ll get that down to under 9,900. The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

I

N HIGH school, I spent chemistry class playing song Pictionary in the back of the room with a cute boy. We were supposed to be studying ions; instead, we were drawing lyrics. “Free, free falling” would come out looking like “broke, broke and suicidal,” we’d have a good laugh, and then fail the next exam on aforementioned ions. I didn’t think chemistry was important for my life — it’s unlikely that I’ll ever get in a jam that requires testing the acidity of a penny in a petri dish — so I didn’t make a point of understanding it. In my adult life, I have no better understanding of chemistry. Only now, it’s the even more important kind that eludes me — the relationship kind. At least in high school, you could memorize a periodic table or slip a cheat-sheet of equations into your binder. In your dating life, there are no neatly organized tables outlining what chemistry is, no equations to figure out the kind of reaction you’ll have with another (hopefully handsome) element. Take my friend, Susan, for example.

She’s got a guy who is sweet. And smart. And keen on whisking her off to New York to see Broadway shows, and to Chicago for no other reason than she’s never been. Susan mentioned that she’d like to go to Paris and this man’s idea was to leave right then because, hey, it was a weekend. His sense of fun and spontaneity is tempered only by his sense of responsibility. He holds a good job. Makes great money. And — gasp — acts like a grownup. Plus, he adores Susan.

And yet, Susan says that something is missing. It’s not that the conversation isn’t great — it is. And it’s not that he doesn’t make her laugh — he does. And it’s not that she isn’t attracted physically — that’s there too. So what’s missing? That pesky, unquantifiable, pull-your-hair-out-trying-todefine-it thing — chemistry. Chemistry explains why we can sit through a two-hour romantic comedy believing a relationship could unfold between the beautiful Katherine Heigl and tubby funnyman Seth Rogen. Why Julia Roberts and puffy-haired Lyle Lovett walked down the aisle. Why you’ll likely see one or two hairy, overweight men in Speedos being lotioned up by bronzed beach bunnies this summer at the Congress Hall pool. Or why your wonderful Pictionary-playing friend from high school insists on dating that unfortunate looking girl with that unfortunate personality. It may not look right. It may not make sense. It’s relationship chemistry. And it’s just as difficult to understand as the classroom kind, minus the petri dishes.

A Little Bit About Exit Zero Publishing Who we are, what we do, and where we go
