Subscriber Of The Week
Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero T-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Becky Santry of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I’ve been visiting Cape May since 1994. Who are you normally with? I usually come with my husand and two daughters. Favorite thing about Cape May? My favorite thing is sitting on the beach when the dolphins go by. Least favorite thing? The heavy traffic at times. Favorite restaurants? Harpoon Henry’s, Godmother’s and The Lobster House. Favorite place to stay? We have stayed in many places, but find La Mer excepctionally nice and convenient. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I’d make it closer to where we live! Favorite thing about Exit Zero? I espcially like historical articles in Exit Zero, and the restuarant listings are great. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I can’t think of anything about the magazine that I would change! What’s your T-shirt size? My T-shirt size would probably be a large.
Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. Quotes Of The Week
Random Factoid
““I don’t want any vegetables, thank you. I paid for the cow to eat them for me.” — Doug Coupland “Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if vegetables smelled as good as bacon.” — Doug Larson ““Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.”— Hebrew Proverb
FROZEN vegetables are more nutritious than fresh vegetables. Frozen are picked and packaged in the same day, while fresh reach the market long after they have been picked. Hence, they may lose some essential nutrients. It has also been said that frozen vegetables taste better than fresh anyway.
Cocktail Recipe Of The Week... Cucumber Saketini COCKTAILS made with vegetables are healthier... right? No matter; they can be delicious. This recipe we got from Gina Peterson, local bartender extraordinaire. At the Ebbitt Room where Gina serves this, they use English cucumbers (because they’re seedless) or whatever cucumbers are coming fresh at Beach Plum Farm (because they’re tasty and organic).
Ingredients 1/4 cup of cucumbers, diced 1 tbsp mint 1 dash Rose’s lime juice 1 tbsp Dekuyper apple pucker 4-5 oz sake of your choosing Muddle all ingredients, except sake, together in a pint glass. Fill the rest of the way with the sake, then throw over ice and strain over a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a slice of cucumber.

Talk Of The Town
Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
Pricey In Paradise IT’S that time of year again – sun, fun, and… parking tickets. Cape May has 1,576 single head parking meters, and 12 multi-meters, aka kiosks, aka “rhinos.” As Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman told us — City Manager Bruce MacLeod could not be reached for comment, via phone calls, emails, and turning up at City Hall — “It’s a great source of revenue for the city; they bring in over a million dollars, which is money that goes into the general fund in order to reduce taxes.” We get that. We also know we’re not the worst-off (In North Wildwood, meters cost $1.50 per hour, according to City Manager Lou Belasco, which is fifty cents more than they cost here). And we don’t expect to be the next Avalon, which really is cooler by a mile, at least in terms of parking convenience. (“We have no meters, totally free parking throughout the community, no restrictions in the downtown area, and a nearly 1,000-space lot on the beachfront,” said Public Information Officer Scott Wahl.” ) But we also think there’s great room for improvement here on Cape Island, for the following reasons: 1. Confusion. “It was around 2008 that the city made the move toward the kiosks,” Jack Wichterman told us. This means that there are now three different ways to pay for parking in Cape May: traditional coin-operated machines, parking permits for the lots at Bank Street and on Jackson, and kiosks — a central meter that is designated for more than one parking spot. In addition to cash, they accept credit cards, which seems like it would be more convenient. “But it’s quite expensive to install them,” Jack said, “and a
lot of people don’t know how to use them. They’ve caused some headaches. Heck, I don’t know how to use them.” Plus, the kiosks don’t offer any reduction in visual clutter — sure, one meter might be more sightly than many, but they require more signage. “Otherwise, people sometimes get out of their car, without realizing they’re there,” said Frank Donato, the Director of Finance for Ocean City. In that town, on the day we called, 70 “meter heads” were being installed. A company called IPS, Frank told us, makes wireless, solar-powered credit card machines that can be fitted to the tops of traditional coin-operated machines, which seems like something worth looking into when we’re talking about streamlining parking costs. Especially considering that people aren’t accustomed to carrying oodles of quarters with them. Which brings us to… 2. Lack of change. “The only reason people are getting tickets is that they don’t have the quarters,” said Larry Schneider. He’s a shlocal (part shoebie, part local) we caught up with while he unloaded surfboards from his truck on Beach Avenue. He’d received two parking tickets in the last two days. “My house here rents for $7,000 a week in the summer; it’s not like we don’t want to pay the extra fifty cents.” While the city does allow you to cash in your dollar bills at their beach tag booths (“There’s about three of four of these,” Jack said), business owners also carry a heavy burden. “It’s all the time that people are asking for change, and it’s very frustrating,” said Rick Kaschak, owner of Steaks Up on Beach Avenue. “It’s constant,” said Lisa Solty, manager of Shirt Shop Cape May, also on Beach Avenue. “People get mad when we say
we just don’t have them. I had one person tell me, ‘Well, I just can’t shop here, then.’” Then there’s Sue Marelton, owner of Coffee Tyme, who says she has to go to the bank every day just for this reason. “It’s every third customer asking for quarters. We don’t understand why the city doesn’t offer change machines.” We didn’t, either, so we asked Jack this, too. “That’s something I wanted, when I was on council back in 2003,” he told us. “We found out they have them in Rehoboth Beach, but the fear was that people would break into them. Potential theft was the issue, but I would back this 100%.” Right now, there is also one of these machines in Cabanas. Manager Petyon Bowman told us they were intended for the bar’s pool players, “although some people do use the quarter machine for the meters as well.” And they definitely use the quarter machine in the arcade for this purpose. “Tons of people do it,” said owner Peter Tiburzio. “I don’t mind helping the city out with this, but some of the local business people take advantage. They think I’m a bank. We go through $500 worth of quarters a week.” Perhaps the reason for the lack of change machines has to do with how much revenue overtime tickets bring in. When we stopped over at City Hall to pay one of our own overtime tickets, we asked City Clerk Louise Cummiskey how much revenue these things bring in. “$900,139 a year,” she told us. 3. Hassle for employees in town. Two or three times during his average day shift and “constantly” during his average night shift at the Marquis de Lafayette Hotel, Assistant Maintenance Manager Scott Crookston,

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 13 encounters a person who is not staying at the hotel attempting to pull a fast one and park in the lot. “It’s a big issue,” he said. “we have only 90 spots for 84 rooms.” It’s something that Andrew Skilton, Manager at the Rusty Nail, encounters as well. “Of course it’s frustrating when people who are going to the beach park here,” he said. “Often times, people try to sneak into the employee lot in the back, meaning they take spots reserved for, say, employee of the month.” Other employees, who don’t have designated lots adjacent to their places of business are forced to walk far distances. “Many people who work here will throw their bikes or skateboards in their car, it’s that far,” Scott said. This presents safety concerns for some, like Maja Brandenburg, who waits tables at The Ebbitt Room, has a three-quarter mile walk to her walk, and is often getting done at close to 1:30 in the morning. “When you’re in the uniform, people know you have cash on you, so I bought myself a thing of mace. Don’t mess with me.” It may seem silly to some to be concerned with muggers in the safe town of Cape May, but these are genuine concerns for some folks. There ARE some solutions. Employees can pay the city for a parking pass for either the Bank Street or Jackson Street lots, at $160/season or $360/season, respectively. But these are “highly desirable,” according to the city. (There are only 50 permits available for the Jackson Street lot, which are all sold, and 225 permits in the Bank Street lot, of which there are only 10 left.) The city of Stone Harbor, two square miles long, offers five lots for employees. Then there’s the trolley option. It makes a 20-minute loop around Cape May, but since it stops running at 11pm, it’s not much help to restaurant workers like Maya. If you pick it up at either the Lafayette Street lot by Cape May Elementary (where it’s free to park), or at the gazebo — you can ride for free, thanks to Cape May City. It’s also free if you can provide a receipt for something purchased at the Washignton Street Mall, and for folks staying at hotels that have purchased discounted tickets on their behalf. Otherwise, it costs $1.00. “We’d be willing to offer discounted tickets for employees,” said American Trolley Company president Dick Adelizzi, “but no one’s ever approached me about doing that.” We don’t see why the city wouldn’t consider offering parking passes for purchase
Look at that smile! Audrey is a sweet, albeit misunderstood pup, hoping for a home. See our story on page 18. Aleksey Moryakov that would excuse employees from all meters in town. We’re willing to bet that, even if they were pricey, workers would be happy to pay for the convenience. In fact, we think all locals would. “To my knowledge, “ Jack Wichterman told us, “it’s not something we’ve talked about.” The city might also consider allowing hotels and bed and breakfasts
to purchase passes that would excuse their guests. It’s a policy Ocean City has taken up, and they still bring in more than two million dollars in parking revenue a season. 4. Lack of space. We know there’s not much the city can do about creating more park-

From Page 14 ing spaces (there’s been whispers that the former site of the Beach Theater might be converted into parking, but the lot is owned by Frank’s Theater, meaning this company has the final say), but considering how hard it is to find a spot in the heart of the season, removing them strikes us as odd. Jack estimates there were 25 spaces lost in front of Convention Hall, which was a good move, he says, because it “sets off the building” and shows off the landscaping. This may be true, but we’re willing to bet the decision “sets off” a few frustrated drivers, too.
Keeping Your Cool A DAY on the beach in Cape May can be glorious… so glorious, it seems a shame to leave it just because you get hungry. We thought it would be fun to investigate how to pack your perfect cooler for your perfect day on the beach. Here is what we came up with: The Cooler: We stopped by Swain’s Ace Hardware to check out their selection, and we’re happy to report they offer both Rubbermaid
Thursday, June 21, 2012 and Igloo varieties, ranging from 13 to 50 quartz. We like the 38-quart model the best — it’s not so big that’s it’s cumbersome, and not so small that it won’t fit a hefty lunch. Plus, it’s got wheels, which is a bonus if you need to park far from your beach of choice (see previous article). Swain’s also sells ice packs for $1.49 a piece. Or buy your ice from Sunset Liquor. We called around, and at $1.99 a bag, they’re the cheapest. The Sandwich: Who better to ask about a perfect beach sandwich than Executive Chef of The Ebbitt Room, Lucas Manteca. If you get there early enough, you’ll catch him soaking up the rays on his surf board on Poverty Beach. He gave us this recipe for a roasted chicken sandwich that serves six because “it’s healthy and refreshing, and it has the protein you want for a long day on the beach. Plus, it makes for great leftovers.” Lucas and wife Deanna Ebner serve a version of it at The Red Store in Cape May Point, which Deanna runs, but it can be whipped up at home pretty easily with these ingredients, the couple says. Here’s what you’ll need. 1 loaf of 8-grain or multi grain bread, from your local’s farmer’s market 3 carrots
¼ head of red cabbage 2 green apples 1 bunch of mint 2 lemons 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil (It’s the tastiest because it goes through the least processing, Lucas says.) 1 cucumber 1 roasted chicken (from Acme) 1 tbsp honey Pull your chicken off the bone and place it in a bowl. Shred and add the cabbage, then peel and add the three carrots. Add your apples and carrots, peeled and diced, and your cucumber, deskinned. Add the honey, olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste, make your sandwich, and hit the beach. The drink: You need to stay hydrated on the beach, but water might not be exciting enough for you. Mikey Tsiartsionis, owner of Chill, the new crepe and smoothie place next to George’s that will — “with a little luck” — be open for July 4, gave us this tip: Blend threequarters of a cup of watermelon, a quarter cup shaved ice, and half a cup of mint for a “natural, simple, refreshing drink.”

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 16 “We recommend freezing half of it the night before,” said Barbara Graver, manager at Love the Cook on the Washington Street Mall. “Then fill it with the remainder right before you’re ready to go. It will keep your drink cooler longer, and it will keep your cooler cooler!” If you don’t have something to transport it in, Love the Cook will have their cool-retaining, insulated plastic containers within a couple of weeks. The dessert: Chocolate may seem like a bad thing to bring to the beach, but Joe Bogle, owner of The Original Fudge Kitchen, assured us that the reason fudge is so popular at the seashore is that it does not melt. “You don’t even need to put it in the cooler,” he said. “I’m not kidding.” We also love the non-melting treats at Coffee Tyme, which are popular amongst lifeguards, so you know they’re beachfriendly. Owner Sue Marelton makes them by hand, including the breakfast cookie, our go-to beach snack. It’s made with all whole grain, lots of dried fruit, nuts, wheat germ and pumpkin seed, so it’s filling enough to hold you over until sunset.
Love Needed AUDREY is a single girl who likes long walks on the beach. No, really. Audrey is the pittbull-mix who’s been at the Cape May County Animal Shelter longer than any other dog — two years. We stopped by to meet her last weekend, and we would have taken her home — she’s adorable — if we didn’t already have our hands full with the Exit Zero animals. Animal Attendant Kathleen James introduced us, explaining that pittbulls have “a bad rap,” but that this one is simply “misunderstood.” “She uses her mouth a lot,” Kathleen told us, “which makes us think she was previously owned by a guy who liked to play rough.” But Audrey doesn’t know she’s doing anything wrong; to her, it’s all in good fun. “I’m not scared of her,” Kathleen told
us, “and there are definitely dogs here I’m intimidated by.” Audrey would made a good guard dog for a single woman, according to the shelter, an especially good bud for a single guy, or a good fit for a couple with no children. “She’s super low-maintenance,” Kathleen said. And super cute, too. We fell in love with her floppy ears and big smile, the little white spot on her neck, and the way she became so fixated on Comet the cat, who was hiding in the bushes a few feet away. But mostly, we fell in love with the story Kathleen told us about Audrey’s love of water. “It was just last week,” she said, “when Audrey got in the baby pool out back, put her head under the surface, and started walking in circles that way, as though she was looking for something at the bottom of the pool. She’s a swimmer, and she’d be a great beach dog.” She’s also “fiercely loyal, super smart,” and a grade A-student. Audrey received high marks on her sensitivity test, her stare test, and her pinch test (meaning she doesn’t mind having her paws touched). She did receive a C for her food test but, like Kathleen said, “just don’t mess with a dog when it’s eating.” We know some people who

Talk Of The Town ? From Page 18 don’t like things taken off their plate, either. We asked Kathleen if the fact that this lovable dog is still without a home could have anything to do with the fact that she’s been there so long. “People might start to think there’s something wrong simply because she’s been here, but this is a good dog.” The truth is, Audrey has just had a string of bad luck. She was picked up by animal control in North Wildwood and never claimed, and the people who’ve been interested in her since have ultimately decided that getting a dog is too big a responsibility. Audrey is estimated to be between two and four, so she’s got a lot of energy and will need a good bit of training… though she does respond to “sit!” (Which is more than we can say for some toddlers we know.) “I love this dog,” Kathleen said. “Everyone does. It will be bittersweet when she does go.” So have a heart, Cape May. Rescue this little girl, and who knows, she might just end up rescuing you right back.
Eat Your (Local) Veggies
THE older we get, the more we realize the wisdom of all those things our mothers told
us: “Wash your hands before sitting at the table.” “Do unto others as you’d have done to you.” And for Pete’s sake, “eat your vegetables.” Tai Menz, proprietor of the Cape May Organic Market, might quantify that last one somewhat: eat your local, organic, pesticide-free vegetables. We went over to have a look at what they’re offering at the market, and we pleasantly surprised with the quality, selection and the prices. The day we visited, there was zucchini, striped or un-striped, if that’s important to you (including a large “lungo blanco,” fresh out of Tai’s dad’s Cold Spring garden), green beans and romaine from Higbee Farm on New England Road, sweet potatoes, onions, even hothouse tomatoes and dandelion greens. Sometimes you think organic, and you automatically think “expensive,” but that’s simply not the case here — the sweet potatoes, for instance, were a mere 86 cents per pound. Tai visits several farms in the area for his products, and told us he travels no more than 15 miles or so from Cape
May for the produce they offer, with a few exceptions. For instance, the Chef ’s Sampler Organic Mushrooms, which are shipped fresh from California. “I use those when I cook at Aleathea’s,” where he is the chef, Tai tells us. “Everything in the store I have either used myself or researched pretty thoroughly.” Need to grab something quick or just don’t feel like cooking? Snag a tub of fresh salsa or bruschetta right out of the refrigerated case — Tai makes all of those fresh, from scratch, using all organic ingredients. “There are some places around here that are not yet ‘certified organic;’ they really make you jump through hoops to get that certification,” Tai says. “The most important thing to me, though, is that I buy and use produce that has not been treated with any chemicals or had any pesticides used in its growth.” And what’s Tai’s favorite vegetable? “That’s a tough one,” he says. “I’ll pretty much eat anything.”
PARTING SHOT We can’t even believe we need to say this, but there are litter bugs amongst us.
We took our dogs for a walk on Higbee Beach this morning, and we found about 25 empty cardboard sparkler boxes being washed out to sea. To the morons who left them there — you know what’s prettier than a sparkler? A clean ocean.

The Movie Column
Y
By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival
OU’VE heard it said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” How about we start a new idiom? “Don’t judge a film by its tagline.” Hysteria should be on your DVD rental cue (sorry, gang, won’t get to see it in Cape May theaters!). You may know the movie by its descriptor, “a British romantic comedy about the invention of the vibrator.” And while it certainly describes the film, it can be misleading. “Wait, what did he just say?” you ask. “It’s about the invention of what?” Do you need me to go into detail about what this is, as my editor reads this, red pen firmly in hand, muttering, “What IS he going to write next?” Well, suffice it to say I will assume you know that I’m talking about, dear reader. As it turns out, the vibrator (oh snap did he say the word AGAIN) was patented by Dr Joseph Mortimer Granville, c. 1880 in England. You Cape May folks know that’s prudish Victorian England. And this history is no joke — check out Wikipedia (which we all know is accurate!). In fact,
Hysteria is a strange but wonderfully crafted commentary on women’s struggle for equality “it” was the fourth household item to be made electronic — even before the fan and the vacuum. And if you’re alarmed that I called it a household item… well… there’s only so much I can say to that. As it turns out, the invention (whew, he called it “invention” this time!) was developed to treat “hysteria,” a condition in women which can now be called… watch that red pen, Ms Editor, um… frustration, perhaps? Or maybe we can
say lack of intimacy? Seriously, hysteria was treated in brutal ways with hysterectomies and mental institutionalization when it could have been simply treated with a… well, you know… This film is a wonderfully crafted commentary on women’s struggle for equality. It’s also a heartfelt portrayal of the tireless work of one charitable woman who fights to save families from poverty and social injustice. Maggie Gyllenhaal brilliantly leads a formidable cast as that philanthropic woman; she is best known as the female lead in The Dark Knight. So while you might read the description of the film and say, “cute” — don’t think in such f lippant terms! This film has substance and although some characters could have been more developed and greater emphasis placed on the deeper storyline, it’s worth a rent! Email capemayfilm@hotmail.com to let me know how much this column deeply offended you (or not) and get a free pass to the Cape May Film Festival, October 19-21, at the Chalfonte Hotel.

Sleeping Around
Exit Zero tests the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Montreal Inn WHERE IS IT? The Montreal Inn is located at Beach and Madison Avenues. WHAT IS IT? It’s a four-story beachfront hotel, complete with an excellent restaurant and outside bar, a liquor store, a pool, exercise room, beach service — such luxury — and a great location, directly across from the beach. Just look for their cabanas. WHO RUNS IT? The Montreal is owned and run by the Hirsch family, and they recently brought in manager Stevan Obverby, who somehow manages to be everywhere at once. HOW MANY ROOMS? There are 70 rooms in total, ranging from a standard breezeway room to spacious two-room efficiencies suites. WHAT’S THE VIBE? The vibe at the Montreal can best be described as comfortably family-friendly, with an understated, beachy elegance. From the pleasant Diane who checked us in, to the friendly servers at Harry’s, to the aformentioned Stevan, the “you’re part of our family” vibe is prevalent wherever you go. (Without all that pesky family squabbling, of course.)
AMENITIES? We had kids with us, so luckily we had one of the Montreal’s tworoom efficiencies, complete with a queen bed, pull-out sofa, two flat-screen TVs, a twoburner cook-top, refrigerator, microwave, coffee-maker, and dishware. There was a large closet with a safe, and the updated decor was subdued and relaxing. Did we mention the granite counters in the kitchen and bath? Lovely. The best part, though was the spacious and nicely landscaped balcony area, which overlooked the pool, and offered an excellent view of the ocean. A perfect spot to sit and relax with a good book, or a laptop to
take advantage of the complimentary wireless internet service. The pool closes at a civilized 9pm. We had dinner and breakfast at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille —if you are a meatloaf fan, you simply MUST try Harry’s offering. It was excellent. They also have a generous children’s menu that includes their beverage and dessert for one low price. WHAT’S THE BED LIKE? We had a nice firm queen mattress — the Montreal is updating all of their rooms, and we loved the large modern headboard. INSIDER TIP: Just because you’re checking out doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze in an extra beach day. Use their outdoor guest shower and changing room; just turn in your beach tags at the front desk before you leave town. Sounds like something a family member would do for you, doesn’t it? RANDOM FACT: When you check in, you get your beach passes AND an Innsider card, which you can use for discounts on purchases at various stores in town. CONTACT INFO: Call (800) 525-7011, or check out www.montreal-inn.com.

The Exit Zero Bouquet Ambush
«
EACH week, Exit Zero ambushes an unsuspecting and deserving citizen with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from one of our fine local florists. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s recipient is Mesesan Alexandru of Romania, who was ambushed wandering the Washington Street Mall. What are you doing here? I’m a student and I just got here yesterday. What are you up to today? I’m just doing a little sightseeing. When is the last time you got some flowers? I have never gotten flowers, so thank you. How do you feel about vegetable? I love them — I eat them every day — they’re better than meat. PHOTO BY GABI URDA... FLOWERS BY KATE’S

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I recently bumped into a friend of hers, who was having a cigarette on the promenade since she can’t smoke on the beach anymore. While my wife made introductions, she mentioned that her friend is a nurse, and I immediately remarked that it was difficult to imagine why a nurse would smoke cigarettes. My wife berated me later, saying that I shouldn’t have said that, but it was how I feel. Plus, you are always saying that people are not mind-readers, and we should tell them how we feel, right? — Outspoken Dear Outspoken Oh, dear. The Answer Lady supposes she has likely been thrown under the bus for many things, but she certainly does not want the good citizens of Cape May to run around spilling their guts to mere acquaintances
Wise answers to perplexing questions
and strangers. Indeed, most people are not mind-readers, but the Answer Lady was referring to sharing our feelings, especially strong feelings, with those with whom we are in a relationship. The Answer Lady is by no means suggesting that we start marching up to the person in line in front of us at Uncle Bill’s and demanding “Good grief, sir! Who let you out of the house dressed like that? Do you not possess a mirror?” And let us not forget those who take liberties with pregnant ladies; what is it about a belly full of
child that causes people to lose their senses by reaching out to touch a stranger’s body, or worse, to ask if they will be breast-feeding the baby? The once-pregnant Answer Lady once met someone who had not sooner been introduced to her when she did not one, but both of those things. It took every ounce of self-control the Answer Lady possessed not to slap the offender. Twice. So, while the Answer Lady agrees that smoking is a terrible and unhealthy habit for anyone, she is not of a mind that one should share that sentiment with a person one met 30 seconds ago. Dear Answer Lady I’m going to a baby shower. I have no children, no experience with children — I’ve have never even babysat. There is a registry, but I feel like that is impersonal, and I don’t want to give cash (can you give cash at a shower?). Help! — No Kidding Dear Kidding Get thee to Happy Baby, stat. It’s a cozy, not overwhelming space, and the staff is super-helpful. And the Answer Lady guarantees you’ll find something adorable.

What’s Your Story?
Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? What’s your name and where are you from? My name is Mike Charan and I am originally from the Bronx, but now I live in Egg Harbor. I drive back and forth 40 minutes to Cape May every day, so I really wish I could just move here. What are you doing here? I work here —I’m a banker here at Bank of America and I just came outside to the parking lot to check on my car. Why are you checking your car, exactly? Well, I usually come out here every hour or so just to make sure that no shoppers have hit my car with their shopping carts. I know it might be a little funny, but it’s just something that I do. This week’s theme is vegetables. Do you like vegetables? I do love veggie salads. Cucumbers are my favorite, although I was not too fond of them as a child. But since it’s summer, I am going to have to lose some weight. Gotta maintain the beach physique. Interview by Caroline Wenzel PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA

History of West Cape May West Cape May is one of four small towns that comprise Cape Island in Cape May County, and was settled by Mayflower descendants, riverboat pilots, whalers and former slaves (the Borough has reported ties to the Underground Railroad and became home to many African Americans who found sanctuary from slave hunters). The Borough’s history goes back to pre-Colonial times when the inhabitants were the Lenni Lenape Indians. The town boasts structures dating to the Colonial period, the Victorian era and some fine examples of the early 20th Century. From 1881 to 1931, the Hastings goldbeating company was located in the Borough employing women to pound one-inch strips of gold into gossamer-thin sheets used for the decorative arts. The site is marked on Goldbeaten Alley. It was this business along with real estate speculation and subdivision of the land that led to the borough’s incorporation in 1884. The core of West Cape May is included in the National Registry of Historic Districts for Cape May and Cape May County NJ. The historic area includes most of Broadway and goes from Park Boulevard to Pacific Ave. and from Sunset Boulevard to Leaming Ave. Although West Cape May was established as a separate town in 1884, some homes date back many years before then. Some of the best times to enjoy West Cape May’s architecture are Fall, Winter and Spring before our many trees leaf out.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
AM NOT one for vegetables, by nature. I always subscribed to the notion that a chap (or lady: I use the word “chap” as a pan-sexual term, that marks a good lad/lass or either gender, or a third gender, or indeterminate gender. In fact, I once had a horse who served me so well during my time in the Scots Greys that I referred to him as a chap, also. And Young Albert is also a chap, albeit of the hairy four-legged variety...) should not consume anything that he/she has not hunted down and killed with his bare hands (again, let me clarify: “bare” does not mean one has to necessarily throttle/gouge/ karate chop the thing to death: it allows for one’s bare hands to be holding the elephant gun/rifle/crossbow/mini-gun that does the actual killing. And if it’s cold, one can also still wear gloves and qualify, but only stylish five-fingered gloves, not those dreadful mitten things: no living creature should meet its end at the fumbling wooly hand of a chap who wears mittens). And other than the bipedal carnivorous Giant Flytrap plant in Borneo, which was
capable of stalking and swallowing a chap whole, I have yet to meet a vegetable that was mobile enough to be hunted. Actually, that Giant Flytrap was not easily done in by conventional means, now I recall: my bullets passed through it, and it took a flamethrower to finish it off. Luckily I always take one with me on foreign travails, whether Darkest Africa or Wildwood. So I have tended to view vegetables as all right for filling up bits and pieces of the landscape that are not otherwise engaged
in being interesting, but are not really worth noting or eating. I suppose an exception is the chilli plant: I am addicted to those tiny redhot delights, and will happily add several hundred to a stew when I have guests round whom I am not overly fond of. Oh, the facial expressions, the choking noises, the sudden and catastrophic bowel evacuations. How Young Albert and I laugh. I must admit, I have tended to relegate some slow-moving animal species to the category of “vegetable” on account of their low entertainment value when hunted: oxen, sloths, diplodocus and Wildwooders, for example. But I admit they are probably technically animal species, with the possible exception of the last of those. So now I am hearing we need “five pieces” a day, for health? Well, bugger that for a game of soldiers, as we used to say in the Greys. I shall up my intake of Port and Wine to qualify. This may necessitate me spending large parts of the day inebriated, but better that than I am forced to eat a vegetable. For that they will have to pry a pork chop from my cold dead hands.

Activity Of The Week
G
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sail Away.
O BEYOND Cape May’s beautiful beaches — learn to sail this summer. Even if, like me, you don’t know a line from a stay, a sheet from a halyard, or a schooner from a ketch, a few classes will teach you enough to have fun. Then, you can spend a lifetime learning more. Wind powered the economy of the early world, and, in the 16th century, Dutch merchants began to sail for fun. In the 17th century, one merchant gave a “jaght” to King Charles I of England, and the sport spread to Britain, and then the United States. Organized yacht racing gained popularity among the leisure class. In 1851, the schooner America won the “Hundred Pound Cup” in a race around the Isle of Wight, and “America’s Cup” racing was born. Sir Thomas Lipton, he of the tea, competed for it five times. Though he never won, he created the corporate sports sponsorship along the way. In Cape May, sailing has been popular since at least 1871, when teams from yacht clubs in Philadelphia and New York met here to compete. The Cape May Cup attracted
wealthy competitors from around the world — the Prince of Wales won it in 1903 on the Brittannia. Today, thanks to innovations in boat building, sailing is no longer just a sport for the wealthy — plywood and fiberglass have made it more accessible. But, according to sailing instructor Conor Dugan, learning to sail will still leave

you feeling like royalty. Anyone can learn, he says, although “I’ve had most success with children 10 and up.” Sailors must know how to swim, because you’re going to end up in the water while learning. “Dinghies are prone to capsizing. We practice capsizing the boats and having the students right the boat.” Conor says, “You can constantly keep learning and growing as a sailor. You never really know what is going to happen and, especially on larger vessels, this sometimes means having to think of a solution under a pressure.” A college senior, Conor credits sailing with teaching him to focus. Focus on learning to sail this summer. The Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May offers a Junior Sailing Program for children ages 8-18. Session 1 is June 25-July 20, and session 2 is July 23-August 17. They offer an Adult Sailing Program, 4-6pm every Wednesday from July 11-August 29. Use your own boat, or one of theirs. Contact Brian Ackerman, Rear Commodore of the Corinthian Yacht Club, at rc@ cyccm.com for more information. Set sail for Cape May this summer. Next week: Fire Works

COOKIE is waiting patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to a forever home. She is a very sweet and loving girl who loves attention. She’s pretty laidback for her age, and she does love to lay around in the shade. She’s okay with kids, other dogs, and even cats. If you think Coookie would be a good match for you, stop on in the shelter and give her a second chance. The adoption fee is $95.
«
LOUISE is a young playful girl who is sweet and seems very trainable. Right now she is a tad unruly but with consistent direction she’ll be fine. She came in as a stray. Louise likes other dogs but wouldn’t do well with cats. Until she calms down or receives training, she’d require extra supervision with small children, not because she’s aggressive but because she does not realize her own strength. The adoption fee is $95.
«
KRINGLE is waiting patiently for a forever home. He is a younger, energetic boy, and is very strong. Because of his energy levels, he will need a bit of training. Because of this, he’d be best in a home without kids, or at least with older kids. He really loves food, and you could use this to train him. If you think you can spare the time and love for a fella like Kringle, stop by the shelter and give him a second chance! The adoption fee is $95.

KNIGHT is waiting here at the shelter with his sister, Dutchess. They came into the shelter a few months ago, and were absolutely terrified. They have since warmed up a bit, and need patience and love in a quiet home. If you can spare enough time and love stop by the shelter and give them a second chance. The adoption fee is $70.
«
VALENTINO is waiting patiently at the shelter for someone to take him to a forever home. He was recently brought here from a home with far too many other animals, and may be a little nervous. He is very sweet once you get to know him and will probably do well with other cats and dogs. The adoption fee is $20.

PICKLES is the typical and perfect male tom cat. He is absolutely friendly and very social. Pickles is a very happy cat who is looking for an adopter who wants to be happy, too. If you think Pickles is the kind of guy who can bring a little happiness into your life, stop by the shelter to visit with him. The adoption fee is $20.

Life Of The Opening Night Party ADVERTISING FEATURE
O
PENING night! If last night’s sold out preview is any indication, God of Carnage is in for a healthy, packed-tothe-rafters run. Fast, furious, and side-splittingly funny, Reza’s God of Carnage begins when urban professionals Alan and Annette meet over clafouti and tulips with liberal-minded Michael and Veronica to discuss their sons’ recent schoolyard altercation, and a civilized afternoon gradually descends into chaos. The fissures in the façade of political correctness begin to show as thin-lipped barbs volley back and forth. Couples begin as comrades, but as day progresses into evening, new alliances are formed and compatriots become adversaries. In God of Carnage, Reza crafts a hilarious reminder that adults are sometimes no better behaved than their children. A $50 opening night ticket gains your admission to the quality theatre you’ve grown to know and trust from Cape May Stage, as well as admittance to our fabled after-parties. God of Carnage’s opening night audience will rub elbows with the author and stars of the show — and this show has stars of the highest magnitude! Jason Guy is a most versatile actor (over 50 roles in 49 states), Fiona Hutchison wellknown from her role as villainess Jenna Bradshaw on Guiding Light, John Viscardi has had featured roles on Law and Order and One Life to Live, and Michelle Eugene has played in some of the area’s most wellrespected theatres. You’ll be kicking yourself if you miss tonight’s opening night party
The gloves come off when civility takes a back seat to sniping in the hilarious God of Carnage, opening tonight. Below, Anthony Rapp kicks off our Broadway Series on July 2. at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille at the Montreal Inn on Beach Drive. We have a second party on tap this weekend — our annual gala on June 24th: A Gatsby Gala! Join us for an elegant evening as the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May is transported into the Jazz Age of the 20s immortalized by Fitzgerald’s masterpiece The Great Gatsby. The evening will begin with complimentary champagne, then segue into a gourmet buffet dinner and dancing among beautiful harbor views. Discover the speakeasy cash bar and sample a signature drink. This spectacular evening will include music by Philadelphia’s triplethreat six-piece band Purple Reign, vintage cars, champagne, specialty cocktails, and an exciting live auction. And it’s only two weeks away from our Broadway Series! Visit our website capemaystage.org, or call 884-1341 for details.

Bird Droppings
F
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
ROM the heron rookery a gray catbird recited phrases of a dimly remembered song. But my eyes and attention were fixed on the eastern horizon, which had gone, in short order, from red to gold to nearly white. An understanding kindled by 10,000 previous encounters told me The Great Moment was nearly at hand. And then...the sun’s crown peeked over the horizon, spreading heatless light over the marshes of Delaware Bay and over me, a mortal lightning rod. I don’t know why humans are so fascinated by sunrises and sunsets. Maybe it’s biological, harkening back to a time when we were hunted things and night meant peril, day brought salvation. You’d think we’d get used to it after a while — they do, after all, happen every day. But we don’t get used to it. For whatever reason, our species seems to pause and mark the moment the sun joins and leaves us. Other creatures don’t share this fascination. They grow active or inactive shortly before or after dawn or dusk.
But they don’t stop what they’re doing to mark the moment the sun beaches the horizon. No mother robin, facing a nest of hungry mouths, has tried to distract her brood by saying: “Oh, children, forget daddy and those worms — look at that beautiful sunrise.” No mouse enjoying the last movements of life in the embrace of a cat has won a reprieve because tabby got
mesmerized by a sunset. Nope, it’s just us. And the fascinating thing is that we treat sunrises and sunsets differently. Sunsets are social affairs whether you are in Key West or Sunset Beach in Cape May Point. People gather, celebrate the end of the day, hug, cheer, clap, blow horns, make a scene. Sunrises are different; sunrises aren’t social gatherings. They’re usually a solo event, or perhaps shared with one other. They aren’t a cause for raucous celebration even though there are many who look forward to seeing that sunrise each morning and are thankful for one more day. One day years ago, I watched a serene young woman walk up to the Hawkwatch Platform at Cape May Point State Park. She put her arms on the railing, turned her face into the rising glow, and quietly absorbed the sunrise. I learned later that her father had recently died, and instead of immersing herself in diversions, she had come to Cape May alone, for peace and closure. Does the sun confer this con-

Bird Droppings ? From Page 103 fidence, or does strength seek strength? I remember another encounter with a solo Sol-seeker. There were still stars in the sky when I arrived at the Second Avenue jetty, and I heard the f lutist playing the moment I stepped from the car. He was seated, Buddha-fashion, on the end of the jetty and was playing, as the line from the Joni Mitchell song goes, “real good for free.” Maybe it was drama of life and death that was being played out before me; the sight of weary birds struggling to the safety of shore. But as I scanned and listened, it occurred to me that maybe the piper’s presence was no accident. What if this guy was the Pied Piper of Sunlight? What if the sun had to be coaxed to rise each morning and what if he didn’t play? I never learned the name of the piper, or where he came from. I only know that he played real good for free and that a morning might come when he can’t find his f lute, or sleeps through his alarm, and our several billion year old winning streak on earth will come a dark end. Otherwise, solitary sunrises require three things: the sun, a receptive individual, and solitude, or open space. New Jersey is the most
A Cape May sunset is always as good a reason as any to celebrate crowded state in the union, yet it’s rich in open, secluded places where Sol-mates can go one-on-one with the sun. Virtually the entire eastern border is positioned for front-row sunrise viewing. All you need do is walk to a beach, stop when you hit water, back up, stand, witness a miracle. The time depends on where you’re standing and when. In early summer, in this latitude, some time between 5-6am. You can calculate that it will occur about an hour and 15 minutes after the first suggestion of light appears in the sky, watch

the Weather Channel, or check your smart phone. And beaches don’t have a monopoly on sunrises. There are lots of old dirt roads leading to assorted “landings” on coastal and Delaware Bay marshes that offer open vistas and a new perspective. The sunrise from an ocean of grass is beautiful and different (and you don’t have to contend with fishing boats intruding on the view or guys raking the beaches). A long time ago I started watching birds, and in addition to being a wonderful past-time and providing treasured moments, it links sunrise and sunset into my life. Golfers see an occasional sunrise, and fisherman certainly get their share. But birders and sunrises are inseparable. I’ve seen many solitary sunrises that I hoard in my mind the way a miser stockpiles gold. I have birding to thank for this. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island
T
HERE was so much I wanted to do this year. I wanted to run a half-marathon. I wanted to try a juice fast. I wanted to get a byline in Women’s Health magazine. I wanted to take a trip some place I’d never been. I wanted to do yoga. I wanted to bake. I wanted to learn Spanish. And I wanted to meet a man. And I’ve accomplished — drum roll, please — none of it. In fact, the only one of these goals I’ve put any real effort into is the last one. Which seems pretty silly, considering that not finding a man is the one thing I could chalk up to bad luck. For everything else at which I’m miserably failing, I have no excuses. But 2012 is only half over, which means I still have time. So here’s what’s going to happen. For the time being, I’m done looking for a man/missing a man/regretting a man/complaining about not having a man. Because if I put even half of this energy into other pursuits, I realize, I’d be a far healthier person. And, dare I say it, a far happier person,
too. Hell, at least a more productive person. I don’t want to say goodbye to this column, because it feels like giving up. And in a way, I suppose it is. But sitting down every week to analyze dating isn’t exactly in line with the Stella I’m envisioning for the rest of 2012. Oh, and the name’s not really Stella, by the way... it’s Diane. Diane, the girl who can learn Spanish and bake and run halfmarathons and do yoga and get paid the big
bucks for the things she writes and who is bound and determined to make these things happen. Not Diane, the girl who’s in a perpetual state of self-loathing because she just can’t find a man. Or, at least, not that Diane for much longer. If you’ve been reading this column regularly, you know that precious little has changed in the last two years. I’m just as alone as when this started, only now I want to find love more than ever. And I’ve been feeling like I deserve it lately, because, well, I’m damn good at loving other people. I am clumsy and forgetful, I am inept in a lot of ways, and my car is likely the filthiest vehicle in Cape May. But I am really good at love. Just not when it comes to loving myself. So I won’t be writing this column anymore, Cape May. If you need me, I’ll be off being really kind to myself instead. And then, maybe some day — without having to try so hard — I’ll stumble across a guy who values me as much as I’m going to learn to value myself. But if not — for the first time ever in my life — then maybe that will be okay, too.
