CITIES OF ART Milan city of art, capital of innovation Capital of Lombardy, keeper of treasures and a thousandyear history, but at the same time a beating heart of innovation and experimentation, the protagonist on the international stage of Culture. Milan is all of this, the city that never fails to impress: from the Duomo, the symbol cathedral that stands majestically in its white splendour, to the new Porta Nuova district, where steel and glass highrises loom above a city of the future and new living. Milan is an eclectic city with extraordinary energy. An energy that has attracted artists and writers over the centuries and today opens infinite space to the creativity of young people, just like at the Fabbrica del Vapore, and the genius of contemporary artists, just like at the Hangar Bicocca. Milan is a city that never sleeps, the centre of Europe.

“I visited Milan for the Expo 2015 and I fell in love: coming face to face with The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is an indescribable feeling. Li Wang, China

The new Museum of the Fondazione Prada, the result of a great urban regeneration work of a peripheral area of the city, is a true crossover where you meet art, fashion and architecture. The new Museum of Cultures (Museo delle Culture), set up in the spaces of the ex Ansaldo, displays more than 7,000 works of art, everyday objects, textiles and musical instruments from all continents. Interview with Philippe Daverio “My favourite place in Lombardy? I do not have one… or better, yes: it’s Milan”: Philippe Daverio, among the most experienced and best-loved Italian art critics, is happily surprised to be asked about the beauty and tourist attractions of Lombardy: “Yes, it is not easy to talk about that: when thinking about Lombardy, we all think on…the many highways around Milan, for example. Instead, we should think about the lakes in the foothills of the Alps, from Lake Maggiore to Lake Garda, the villas on the lakes and among them, a wonderful city of art like Mantua, the most extraordinary square of the fifteenth century architecture in Italy, located in Cremona, another amazing square, in Vigevano…” Professor, first of all: in your opinion, what is the tourist identity of Lombardy? “In my opinion, it is still searching for its identity. I would appreciate if they did a more thorough work on this identity, because Lombardy means many things. For example, Lombardy means 15 impressive opera theatres. It means the Roman Brescia, the great neoclassical villas, Milan Cathedral, Pavia Carthusian monastery, the Sacro Monte di Varese. And many other things that most people do not imagine…….!”. So, let them imagine…

20

IN LOMBARDIA

“I think, for example, about the extraordinary testimony of the proto-Romanesque architecture, namely the church of Matilde di Canossa, in Mantua, or the Baptistery of Brescia. I also think about the last traces of Byzantine influence in Castelseprio or the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso on Lake Maggiore, which looks like a Greek monastery. Another example is the navigation on the lakes, which could be revived”. Thus, your “favourite place” in Lombardy is Milan, as you told us? “Yes, I live in the old town. Think that near there, I am following the restoration works of the flats (wonderful ceilings and floors, in particular) of Manzoni’s daughter, Massimo D’Azeglio wife. Wonderful ceilings and floors but not well popular ones. Why? “Because Milan is a city that does not let us to see it in its whole: not having been the capital since the fall of the Duchy, it got the custom of existing more inside than on the facades, unlike other cities that were capitals in the past, such as Florence or Genoa, where they used private buildings as Embassy offices. Many historical buildings in Milan, for example, have wonderful gardens inside, but they cannot be seen by the public!”.

Interview with Deborah Compagnoni Deborah Compagnoni is a ski legend. She is Lombard, coming from Bormio. She is the first and the only - up to date - Italian sports champion (not only woman!) who won a gold medal in three consecutive Olympics. Now, she is living in Treviso with her family. She feels good there but… she is always a bit homesick for Lombardy. Deborah, first of all: how do you feel living outside Lombardy? I admit that I miss my region a lot. I am linked to it by a strong sense of belonging, so that now, when I feel a Lombard accent or inflection in Veneto, I smile spontaneously and this makes me happy. Almost a “family” tie with the region... Yes, Lombardy is very similar to my family. Simple origins, a great power and belief in one’s own skills. Then, its mountains cheer me up when I saw them. Let’s come to the crucial issue for the future of our territory: from the point of view of tourism, how does a champion like you judge Lombard slopes and the offer in general?

The ski resorts in the region are wonderful, as well as the slopes. Maybe, people need to make it clear, once and for all, that Lombardy is not only a region where you work hard and there are large factories and industries, but it is also a magic place: it offers lakes, mountains and beautiful valleys. What’s more? I am not surprised at all that our beauties are always the most popular in terms of tourism... What is Deborah Compagnoni’s favourite slope? It is the first slope where I put the skis, Santa Caterina, when I was still a child. They were the nursery slopes of the ski club, so it was not a difficult slope. Just there, I have some of the most beautiful memories of my life. They also named a slope after you... Yes, in Santa Caterina Valfurva, there is a variant of an existing slope that has my same name. I had already stopped competing when they named it after me. However, it became an important slope, so that now they organize a downhill race for men.

Interview with Michele De Lucchi “I moved to Milan because it was the most important place for a person who wanted to become an architect”. It is a real declaration of love by Michele De Lucchi, one of the most important figures in the Italian architecture field, winner of the prestigious “Compasso d’Oro” for two times and among the most active professionals in Milan, where he has just implemented the Unicredit Pavilion and other pavilions for Expo, including the Pavilion Zero, besides many other remarkable works. Let’s widen the talk to Lombardy: besides Milan, are there other places in this region that are in your heart? “Actually, I am a “guest” in Milan, because I do not reside there. Almost every day, I go back to my true house, at Gavirate, in the Varese province, where I can have a little relaxation. It is located on Varese Lake, near Lake Maggiore, and this let me get away from the chaos of a city like Milan. But Milan…”. Milan? In your opinion, is it a city that is worth a visit? “Milan is still one of the main places for architecture and design. If we could make them a unique example again, we would answer to our international image. The modernization and optimization of the tools and the typical writings of the architecture

are a signature style of Italy and Milan, in particular. And there is an almost archetypal example from this point of view”. What would it be? “The Salone del Mobile (Furniture Fair): it was conceived as a fair to sell tables, sofas, chairs. But if you say that it is just a simple fair, they will laugh at you. The Salone del Mobile is an opportunity to check the progress of the idea people have on their habitat. This is partly because many prototypes are introduced and partly because these productions come together with great set-up projects, the so-called Fuorisalone. An extraordinary opportunity – very crowded not only by Italian people and experts but by tens of thousands of tourists as well – of seeing ideas that are not thought to be sold, at least at first, but rather an evidence of the firm commitment of the architects towards the world. There is an intellectual, cultural, figurative and imaginative project about what people think their environment should be. Just this constant experimentation makes Milan a hub, even if less striking than in the past, because trends are no more welldefined, since there are so many works of different origin: but it’s its beauty, it’s the pull of Milan”.

Interview with Maria Luisa Trussardi “I feel very Lombard, or rather, frankly: I feel very native of Bergamo!”. Maria Luisa Trussardi is a pretty and very kind woman who embodies - in her sensitivity and surname - one of the most famous Italian fashion brands, with an origin of leather production that, today, has evolved into the “total-look”, since the label characterized by the greyhound is on clothing, footwear, bags and more. What does coming from Bergamo mean for you?

inside the building, where my daughter Beatrice, who is keen on art, organizes the setting up of contemporary art exhibitions to combine the present with the past”. Places of the heart? “A perspective from the top, more than places, which I had when my husband took me around with his airplane on the Prealps and Lombard Alps or on Lake Como and Iseo…everything was very beautiful from the top”. Do you have a particular feeling to suggest?

“it means a lot, it means to be a specific type of person; it means wisdom, commitment, determination, tenacity”.

“With those aeroplanes you cannot fly too high and you see everything, so I have many favourite places …I have a particular fondness for the Adda, I really like the river, its banks.”

Does it also mean love for a country or a city?

What do you think when you look at those banks?

“Absolutely yes, one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Bergamo, to be lived and admired by the people who were born there and tourists as well. I am very fond of Bergamo, we have a house there, or better a historic building, in the upper city, where we go whenever we can…”.

“Really want to know? I imagine Leonardo busy at painting the meanders; its landscapes move me”.

Did you say historic? “Yes, a very important building included in the group of Bergamo historic houses. Over the centuries, Colleoni and Quarenghi lived there. It is also embellished by a fountain dating back to 1281… Moreover, every year, we organize an open day and guided tours

Do you think there is a culture of beauty in Lombardy, able to suggest creative solutions to those who deal with fashion, like you? “Yes, of course: the culture of beauty lives in the Lombard crafts and is reflected in our work, inspiring it. They often talk about Florentine traditions but also Lombardy told and did many things, in our creative tradition. Just think of Mantua…”. Full interview on www.in-lombardia.com

Interview with Rosita Missoni “My favourite place? Golasecca, where I was born. Before my eyes, when I was a child, there were Monte Rosa massif, the Ticino and Lake Maggiore. This were the views during my childhood”: Rosita Missoni, not just the wife, but the real “half”of Ottavio, one of the greatest fashion designers, who died two years ago when he was 92 years old. She talks freely about her work, feelings and country, a country linked to work and feelings.

And, as a child, have you ever discovered anything?

Mrs. Missoni, tell us about Golasecca…

“In 1968, Ottavio said: if we want to build our factory, let’s build it in the place where we want to spend our week-ends. Some banks told us that we could buy some lands on a hill in Sumirago, so we visited the place and we fell in love. I remember that we bought several lands from noble people, up to reach 60 thousand metres of land, on a hill in front of Monte Rosa Massif. Therefore, we built the factory first – with great windows open to the views – and we built our house there in 1968. Thus… today, my favourite place is Sumirago and Monte Rosa Massif”.

“it is a small country that hosted an extraordinary civilization, from the Age of Bronze to the fifth century BC …it dates back to 4.000 years ago. It was rediscovered by Abbot Giani at the beginning of the nineteenth century…I studied it when I grew up and I organized many tours within the great exhibitions organized at the Paris Archaelogical Museum, but even at Sforza Castle there are wonderful halls devoted to Golasecca. The Abbot found the necropolis of Monsorino, with its unique terracotta urns, rich bronze jewels, the fitules… “.

“I have not when I was a child, but during the first months of marriage , when Ottavio and I still lived in Golasecca, I found a tomb while we went mushrooming, with two head stones and four side stones. What a feeling…”. Today, you live in Sumirago, 15 kilometres away from your place of birth… “Yes, since 1968”. Why?

The irresistible charm of vintage For those who enjoy browsing in search of vintage pieces, but also for collectors and antique lovers, there are two events in Milan that simply should not be missed. Interview with Walter de Silva Walter de Silva is the number one car designer in the world. Compasso d’Oro award by the Italian Association of Industrial Design, honorary degree in Design from the University of Bologna, countless awards around the world. He has been designing cars from the 70s and until the end of 2015, he was the design head of the Volkswagen group that includes, in addition to the same name brand, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ducati motorbikes and Mann and Scania lorries. He is sixty years old and he was born in Lecco. Although his surname has a Spanish origin, he regards himself a real Lombard man and to prove it, he cited his mother’s surname, Scola, and aunt’s surname, Mascherpa, as if they were medals for bravery. He has been living in Germany for a dozen years - due to work reasons - but two daughters of him are living in Milan. He often goes back to Milan and he clearly shows his love for his birthplace: «Lombardy» he says «is the most beautiful place in the world». He also explains why: «it is a perfect mix of wonderful lakes and important rivers, with a beautiful plain. Lombard inhabitants were able to add their taste to these natural wonders with very interesting works. On the Alps or Prealps, then, you really feel the distance from the earth and the proximity to the sky». What can you tell us about Lecco, your birthplace? The people who always lived there have not had the need to wait for the arrival of George Clooney to notice the beauty and uniqueness of our lake. In addition, we know the secrets of the valleys and mountains that surround it, such as Valsassina, which is a kind of pearl, or Grigna, which has nothing to envy to the most famous peaks.

And Milan? I reached there in 1975 to work for Rodolfo Bonetto, a great designer who worked for Fiat, and I found a bustling, creative and very active city, where they were creating the first graphics and photography studios and the prêt-à-porter was developing. Then and nowadays as well, there were a great passion and movement Really? Milan is more than awake. It is different because it is more interconnected and more digital. But there is the same spirit, the same ability to look to the future. Nobody is worried about creativity and there is still a crossroads, an important meeting place for those working in many fields. Why are Milan and Lombardy keeping this creativity supremacy? It is a cultural and historical issue. The openness of Lombard people is unrivalled in the world. The region has always welcomed everybody and it is the least racist. Here, you can find the right space for the meeting between different people and creativity comes out from this meeting. Milan is one of the great European capitals in terms of history and culture. Then, there is the human factor. Tell us. Those who were born here have an innate vocation to beauty, an innate sense of elegance that comes from history, from the environment.
