It is very hard to highlight a single trait of this beautiful town, since it is enough to discuss its beautiful streets a little or to walk on the soft sands of its beaches to come across some place or monument that reminds of its curious past. Part of this small town is, in fact, taken up by the Illeta dels Banyets area, a privileged and coveted space by tourists where remains and traces of the different peoples who arrived to settle in this place throughout history have been found. It is currently considered one of the best archaeological sites in the Mediterranean
because it contains objects that go back as far as prehistory, the age of bronze, to the Iberian settlement, one of the most important in the Mediterranean because of its unique characteristics, and the Roman era where small bath houses, greenhouses carved into the earth and fish farms stand out. The latter gave this site its name in the folk tradition, it being originally known as Els Banyets de la Reina (the Queen’s Little Baths).
Het is uiterst moeilijk om het over een enkele eigenschap die dit mooie dorp heeft te hebben, want het volstaat om een beetje door haar mooie straten of op het zachte zand van haar stranden te wandelen om één of andere plaats of monument te vinden die aan het merkwaardige verleden herinnert. Onder deze laatste beklemtonen we de kleine badhuizen, serres die in de grond werden getrokken, en viskwekerijen die ervoor verantwoordelijk zijn dat deze plek haar naam kreeg in de volksmond, oorspronkelijk waren ze gekend als Els Banyets de la Reina (De kleine baden van de koningin).

A lo largo de la historia medieval, este pueblo había sufrido por las continuas incursiones de piratas berberiscos a sus costas, lo que motivó a que en el siglo XVI se construyese un sistema de vigilancia compuesto por torres circulares y altas por toda la costa. Hoy en día se mantienen 2 de estas: la Torre del Barranc d’Aigües y la Torre de la Illeta; esta última es la que mejor se mantiene tras haber sido remodelada en el siglo XX y constituye todo un símbolo importante para los campellanos, además de ser utilizada como marco parala celebración de diferentes eventos de interés.
Throughout medieval history, this town had suffered from the continuous raids of Barbary pirates on its coastlines, and as a result during the 16th century a surveillance system was built in the form of round and tall watchtowers dotted along the coastline. Today 2 of these still stand: the Torre del Barranc d’Aigües and the Torre de la Illeta; the latter is the best preserved one after having been renovated in the 20th century. It represents an important symbol to the local population, besides being used as the backdrop for the celebration of all kinds of events of interest.
Gedurende de Middeleeuwen leed dit dorp onder de voortdurende invallen van Barbaarijse piraten via haar kusten, wat er voor zorgde dat er in de 16de eeuw een bewakingsysteem werd gebouwd bestaande uit ronde en hoge torens langs de hele kustlijn. Tegenwoordig zijn er daar 2 van bewaard: de Torre del Barranc d’Aigües en la Torre de la Illeta. Deze laatste is diegene die best bewaard is gebleven na gerestaureerd geweest te zijn in de 20ste eeuw en vormt een volwaardig belangrijk simbool voor de Campellanen. Daarnaast wordt ze gebruikt als de setting voor de viering van verschillende evenementen van belang.

Las playas en El Campello son, quizás, el mayor atractivo turístico de la zona. Y con toda la razón, pues no estamos hablando únicamente de un sitio caracterizado por las excepcionales condiciones climatológicas durante todo el año que permiten, a su vez, la realización y práctica de todo tipo de deportes náuticos fomentados por un Club Náutico y un variado abanico de asociaciones y empresas de pesca, surf, buceo, snorkel, parapentismo, waterboarding, etc.; estamos hablando de un sitio donde varias de sus playas, como la Carrer la Mar y la Muchavista, han sido merecedoras del galardón de Banderas Azules por la defensa, conservación y calidad medioambiental de estas.
The beaches at El Campello represent, perhaps, the area’s primary tourist attraction. And with due reason, since we are not only talking about a location that is blessed by an exceptional climate all year round. This facilitates the performance and practice of all kinds of water sports encouraged by its Yachting Club and a wide variety of fishing, surfing, diving, snorkel, parasailing, waterboarding clubs and companies. We are also talking about a place where several of its beaches, such as the la Carrer la Mar and the Muchavista, have been awarded Blue Flags because of their protection, state of preservation and environmental quality.
De stranden van El Campello vormen waarschijnlijk het grootste toeristische aantrekkingspunt van het gebied. En daar heeft men volledig gelijk, want we spreken niet alleen over een plek die zich het hele jaar door kenmerkt door uitzonderlijke climatologische omstandigheden die het beoefenen van allerlei nautische sporten mogelijk maken, aangemoedigd door een Jachtclub en een breed spectrum aan verenigingen en bedrijven gewijd aan de visvangst, surfen, snorkelen, duiken, waterboarden, paraglijden, etc. We hebben het over een plek waar verschillende van haar stranden, zoals Carrer la Mar en Muchavista, blauwe vlaggen hebben verdiend voor hun bescherming, staat van onderhoud en milieukwaliteit.

Y hablando de comida, es normal pensar que, en los restaurantes de un lugar, que tiene el mar tan cerca, se sirvan platillos tanto frescos como deliciosos, y en El Campello se demuestra; tanto así que la ciudad cuenta con el llamado Monumento al Pescador, dos esculturas elaboradas por el artista Arcadi Blasco que simbolizan una barca en el agua y un faro en la arena, homenajeando a las personas del mar y representando la unión y dependencia histórica del sitio con el mar.
And speaking of food, it is normal to think that, in the restaurants of a place, that lies so close to the sea, dishes are served that are as fresh as they are delicious, and El Campello is proof of this; in such a degree that the city has the so-called Monumento al Pescador (Monument to the Fisherman), two sculptures made by artist Arcadi Blasco that represent a boat in the water and a lighthouse in the sand, an ode to the peoples of the sea and representing the town’s historical nexus with and dependence on the sea.

Pero lo interesante de este pueblo no es solamente su belleza; su historia también es interesante, y es imposible escapar de ella mientras vamos con ganas de conocer más sobre el lugar.
El Campello is, in sum, a town worthy of admiration for what it has to offer. The golden colour of its sand beaches, the beautiful blue of its waters, the taste of the food and the affection of its people make this such a charming place. But the interesting thing about this town is not just its beauty, its history is also noteworthy, and it will be impossible to leave it if we are willing to get to know more about the place.
Lo cierto es que El Campello logró captar mi atención y espero que la tuya. Si no has tenido la oportunidad de estar en este bello lugar te lo recomendamos, pues e otro ejemplo de lo que puede ofrecer Europa y, sobre todo, el majestuoso Mar Mediterráneo.
What is certain is that El Campello managed to catch my attention and I do hope it will catch yours. If you have not had the chance yet to visit this beautiful place, we recommend it, because it is another example of what Europe, and particularly the majestic Mediterranean Sea, has to offer.

In het kort, El Campello is een dorp het bewonderen waard voor alles wat het aanbiedt. Het goud van haar zandstranden, het prachtige blauw van haar wateren, de smaak van het eten, het interessante van haar geschiedenis en haar inwoners maken dat deze plek zo mooi is. En het interessante van dit dorp is niet alleen haar schoonheid, haar geschiedenis is ook de moeite waard, en het wordt onmogelijk om van haar te vertrekken zolang we ernaar toegaan met zin om meer over de plek te leren, maar dat laat ik al aan u over. Wat zeker is dat El Campello mijn aandacht wist te vatten en ik hoop ook de uwe. De entre todos los sitios europeos que tienen el privilegio de ser acariciados por la fresca brisa marina que ofrece el Mar Mediterráneo, Alicante es uno de los más sonados; pero ¿Qué tiene de especial esta ciudad? ¿Qué ofrece? ¿Qué es lo que la hace tan atractiva para los visitantes? Pues, para responder todas estas preguntas deberemos adentrarnos en la ciudad, conocer su historia y descubrirlo nosotros mismos porque cada uno/a puede tener una opinión totalmente diferente, pero como dice el refrán: “Para gustos, los colores”. Es interesante, pero la historia de esta bella ciudad inicia en el agua, con la llegada de otros pueblos que dejaron plasmada la huella de su cultura y que, a su vez, sirvieron para sentar las primeras bases que lo que ahora conocemos. El ejemplo más claro es el de los restos de la ciudad íbero-romana de Lvcentvm; fue ahí, en un montículo conocido como El dosal de manises, donde nace Alicante y da sus primeros pasos. Con el tiempo, la ciudad se trasladó a otro lugar, instalándose a los pies del monte Benacantil por su cercanía con el mar. En este popular monte se asienta el Castillo de Santa Bárbara, una fortaleza que se encuentra a 166m de altura que la convierte en uno de los mayores iconos de la ciudad al ser un mirador privilegiado desde el que se pueden obtener maravillosas vistas. Aún así, esta no es la única fortificación medieval que se encuentra en la ciudad porque también podemos encontrar el Castillo de San Fernando que fue construido durante la independencia de los españoles contra los franceses, pero que nunca llegó a entrar en servicio.
Of all the European places that enjoy the privilege of being touched by the fresh sea breeze from the Mediterranean, Alicante is one of the best known. But what is so special about this city? What does it have to offer? What makes it so appealing to visitors? To answer all these questions we must enter it, learn about its history and discover it for ourselves, because each person can have a completely different opinion, but as the saying goes, ‘every man to his taste’. It is interesting, but the history of this beautiful city starts in the water, with the arrival of other peoples that left the imprint of their culture and that simultaneously served to lay down the first foundations of what we know today. The most obvious example is that of the remains of the Iberian-Roman city of Lucentum; it was there, on a small hill known as El Tossal de Manises, where Alicante was born and took its first steps. Over time, the city moved elsewhere, settling at the base of mount Benacantil because of its close proximity to the sea. On this popular hill the Castillo de Santa Bárbara (the Castle of Saint Barbara) was built, a fortress at a height of 166 m. This turns it into one of the city’s biggest landmarks since it is a privileged vantage point from which to enjoy wonderful views. Even so, it is not the only fortress that can be found in the city, because we can also find the Castillo de San Fernando there, which was built during the Spaniards’ struggle for independence against the French, but which was never put into service.
Van alle Europese plaatsen die van het privilege genieten van aangeraakt te worden door de verse zeebries van de Middellandse Zee is Alicante één van de meest bekende; maar wat is er zo speciaal aan deze stad? Wat heeft ze te bieden? Wat maakt ze zo aantrekkelijk voor bezoekers? Om al deze vragen te beantwoorden moeten we de stad van binnenuit verkennen, kennismaken met haar geschiedenis en het op eigen houtje ontdekken, want ieder kan een totaal verschillende mening hebben, maar zoals het spreekwoord zegt, ‘ieder zijn eigen smaak’. Het is interessant, maar de geschiedenis van deze mooie stad begint in het water, met de aankomst van andere volkeren die het spoor van hun cultuur achterlieten en die tegelijkertijd dienden om de eerste fundamenten te leggen van wat we tegenwoordig kennen. Het grootste voorbeeld is dat van de resten van de IberischRomeinse stad van Lucentum; het was daar, op een heuveltje gekend als El Tossal de Manises, waar Alicante geboren werd en haar eerste stapjes maakte. Met de tijd verplaatste de stad zich naar een andere plek, zich vestigend aan de voet van de Benacantil berg omwille van haar nabijheid bij de zee. Op deze populaire heuvel werd het Castillo de Santa Bárbara (het Kasteel van Sint-Barbara) gebouwd, een vesting op 166m hoogte, wat het één van belangrijkste symbolen van de stad maakt aangezien het een bevoorrecht uitkijkpunt vormt vanwaar u van een prachtig uitzicht kan genieten. Het is echter niet de enige versterking die zich in de stad bevindt, want we kunnen er ook het Castillo de San Fernando terugvinden die werd gebouwd tijdens de onafhankelijkheidstrijd van de Spanjaarden tegen de Fransen, maar die nooit werd gebruikt.
Como ya se dijo, para conocer Alicante es necesario pasear por sus calles, acercarse a su maravillosa gente, a sus monumentos y espacios urbanos; y vivir el latido de su corazón; además, seguramente a la mayoría no les gustan las alturas, así que bajemos de los castillos y caminemos un poco por las rutas urbanas de la zona.
As stated, to get to know Alicante it is necessary to explore its streets, to approach its wonderful people, its monuments and urban spaces; and to sense the pulse of its heartbeat; besides, surely most people do not like heights, so let us come down from the castles and take a little stroll through the urban routes of the area.
Om Alicante te kennen is het zoals we reeds beschreven nodig om door haar straten te kuieren, haar geweldige inwoners, monumenten en stedelijke ruimtes te benaderen en het kloppen van haar hartslag te voelen. Bovendien hebben de meeste mensen waarschijnlijk geen liefde voor hoogtes, dus laat ons van de vestingen neerdalen en een beetje wandelen door de stedelijke routes van het gebied. Als we een beetje het centrum van de stad binnendringen wordt het niet moeilijk om het Teatro Principal de Alicante terug te vinden, een symbool dat het duidelijk maakt dat in deze stad de podiumkunsten worden beoefend. Bajemos un poco más por la ciudad y lleguemos hasta el camino paralelo al puerto conocido como La explanada de Alicante, la caminata indispensable y favorita de la mayoría de los viajeros y de muchos habitantes de la zona. Este es considerado el sitio turístico preferido de la ciudad debido a que la mayoría de las fotos sobre Alicante son y fueron tomadas ahí, por lo que no es de extrañar que sea uno de lo sitios más famosos de las redes; esto sin mencionar que dentro de esta caminata podemos encontrar restaurantes que te demuestran la exquisitez de la comida alicantina, y de varias tiendas o puestos de donde se pueden comprar recuerdos de la ciudad. Imágenes, comida, mar, sol, un puerto con yates, tiendas, belleza pura… No es difícil de creer las afirmaciones sobre el sitio.

This without mentioning that in the course of this walkway we can find restaurants that will show you the refined character of the food from Alicante, and of several shops and stands where you can buy souvenirs of the city. Images, food, sea, sun, a marina, shops, pure beauty… These statements about the place are not hard to believe.

Laat ons nog een beetje meer in de stad naar beneden lopen en aankomen op de parallele weg aan de haven gekend als de La explanada de Alicante, de onmisbare en favoriete wandelweg van de meerderheid van de reizigers en van vele bezoekers van het gebied.
