On March 8, 150 undocumented immigrants and allies held a rally at the Federal Plaza in Chicago in protest of the massive deportations since Obama’s presidency. This 5th Annual National Coming Out of the Shadows rally involved speakers ranging from local leaders of community organizations advocating for change and undocumented immigrants who shared their story. One local leader was Marcella Hernandez of the Immigrant Youth Justice League, who said President Obama is one of many to blame for the separation of immigrant families in the United States. “We’re here today to join our voices [of] people around the country and tell President Obama that two million deportations are two million deportations too many.
ing our families, not one more deportation, ni una deportación más,” said Hernandez. While Congress has failed to pass any legislation to curb deportations, this rally is part of a larger growing movement in the country. House senators such as Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin and New Jersey Sen. Bob Menéndez, as well as several organizations such as the National Council of La Raza, continue to pressure Obama to exercise more executive power for pro-immigrant legislation. Anibal Fuentes of Guatemala spoke at the rally, giving a personal perspective to a national political controversy. He is in the middle of deportations proceedings, having been granted a “stay of removal,” which allows him to temporarily postpone his deportation for six months. “How would the president feel if one of his children were torn from his arms if he were forced to leave a country he considers home and separated from his family?” said Fuentes. In six months, Fuentes could be deported from the United States. If that’s the case, he won’t get to watch his 7-month-old son grow up. n

Hacen demasiado ruido’.

“This book is going to teach our kids that gangbanging and violence is not a lifestyle, but a death style. [It is teaching them] to not look for love in the wrong places, because when you do, you’re going to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and you are going to get yourself killed,” emphasized Renteria. “The future of our country [depends] on [the] success of our youth, and the choices our youth make,” added Adriano Pedrelli, CEO of the Barrio Foundation. Chicago native and upcoming singer Alexa (Lee) Torres, who described her music as soul-pop, performed her song that she wrote specifically for mothers of victims of violence titled, “Never Forgotten.” “I had to put myself in their shoes and
[try] to understand [the situation through] a parent’s eyes—how it would feel like to lose a loved one,” stated Torres. According to FBI 2013 reports, Chicago is the “murder capital of the world” with 412 homicides reported in 2013, most of them being gang related. This event aims to decrease the high crimes in Chicago through education. “Whenever you involve education against crime, education is always going to win. I believe that is what is needed in Chicago,” stated Hector Concepcion, Republican candidate for U.S. Rep. of the 4th Congressional District. “[The book is] teaching our kids not to be a statistic, [it] teaches the true principles that with hard work, determination and education, [anything is possible],” added Renteria. n

Chef Gaytan in support of Get Covered Illinois by Nikoleta Morales Chef Carlos Gaytan immigrated to Chicago in early 1991, quickly working his way up from pantry cook to line cook at Sheraton North Shore Hotel. In May 2008, Carlos opened his own restaurant, Mexique on Chicago Avenue in Chicago, which has received much recognition since its opening. Most recently, Gaytan was awarded “Chef of the Year 2011,” by the American Culinary Federation and he was a top four finalist on Season 11 on the Bravo series “Top Chef.” Gaytan also was chosen to speak on behalf of Get Covered Illinois and urge Latinos to sign up for coverage before the deadline, March 31. EXTRA: How did you get connected with Get Covered Illinois? Carlos Gaytan: God always puts people on my path. I have enrolled in the marketplace
and it is amazing. I am happy with the plans. I am amazed that there are people who can find the best deals for you. Sometimes we are so afraid to get insurance thinking it’s not in our budget, especially us Latinos. We think we will never get sick and we just let it pass by. Why did Get Covered choose you as a spokesperson? I can be a role model for not just Latinos but everyone else because I am a public figure. A lot of people respect the way I got here. I came to the U.S. illegally but I fixed my situation and now I am an American citizen and want to do everything the right way. I share my story about Get Covered because a lot of people will relate to me. I come from a humble, poor family. Why is it important to be covered? It is important to have insurance and find navigators that can walk you [through the pro-
cess] to choose the best deals for you. It’s important for me at this age to get covered. I have back pain. Working in the kitchen is not easy. How did you take care of your back pain? I cried. I took the pain like a Latino macho guy. I did enroll. We are selecting a couple of plans and are in the process. We are almost there. Are there affordable insurances in the marketplace? When you sit with navigators, they can get you the insurance and the programs the government offers. You don’t know these things [otherwise]. Latinos that have no papers don’t know that their kids that do [have papers] qualify for those programs. It’s very important. When I opened Mexique I didn’t have any insurance. What would you advise Latinos to eat to be healthy? Pork (laughs). We Latinos love cooking. We don’t really understand that some ingredients
latino. Me inscribí.

I had high cholesterol for 10 years. Now I have to exercise. It’s important for us to get covered, go to a doctor to tell us what we do wrong in the cuisine. What are your favorite things to cook? Pork (laughs). I like a lot of red meats, seafood. Before I opened Mexique I used to cook a lot of seafood, and then I opened Mexique and I became a big fan of pork. I love avocados--my favorite ingredient. What would you like to say to our Latino readers? We Latinos are afraid of change. We don’t want to stop thinking outside of the box. We need to step out of the box and do great things. Coming from Mexico with no money and no English and today being here in Mexique is a beautiful story. It was a painful road. Never give up.

compiled by EXTRA Newspaper At the March 18 Primary Election, voters will nominate candidates to a wide range of federal, state and local offices. Voters in all 50 wards will nominate candidates for the following: U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative in each district, Governor and other statewide offices, State Representatives in each district, Cook County Board Commissioners in each district, Appellate, Circuit and Subcircuit Judges, and other state and local offices in the Republican and Democratic parties. Because this is a Primary Election to nominate candidates in each political party, each voter must request one party’s ballot. Democratic and Republican ballots will be available in all precincts. The Green Party ballot will be available only in the 5th Congressional District. Voters also may select non-partisan ballots, but non-partisan ballots offer no offices or candidates – only referendum questions. The selection of a party ballot (or a nonpartisan referendum ballot) at a Primary Election does not affect how a person may vote in future elections. A total of 1,368,290 Chicagoans are registered to vote in the upcoming election at the city’s 2,069 precincts. On Election Day, registered voters may cast ballots only at the polling place assigned to their precinct. The Chicago Election Board will be introducing electronic poll books to check in voters on Election Day at all 2,069 precincts in the city. The electronic poll books will replace the paper poll books and provide judges in each precinct with updated records from early voting, absentee voting and last-minute voter registrations. The electronic poll books also will provide

assistance and direction to any voters who arrive in the wrong polling places. The electronic poll books have the capacity to print the name and location of any Chicago voter’s correct precinct polling place. Voters who have cast ballots in graceperiod voting or early voting cannot return to change their votes for any reason. Voters also have the option of in-person absentee voting at the Chicago Election Board at 69 W. Washington St. from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, March 16 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, March 17. A voter may cast a provisional ballot if the voter claims to be legally registered and the registration record cannot be found, or if the voter believes the record incorrectly reports that the voter has already voted. Provisional ballots will be kept separately from other ballots. The Election Board then determines in the weeks after Election Day if the voter was qualified, and whether that voter’s ballot can be added to the count. Eligible ballots are then merged into the election totals. For more information, visit chicagoelections.com or call 312-269-7900.n

Incumbent sheriff faces experienced challengers in re-election bid by Brian Dudley Incumbent Sheriff Tom Dart hasn’t invested much time campaigning for re-election. His three democratic primary challengers, however, have been campaigning across Cook County, arguing that Dart lacks the experience and leadership qualities necessary to fulfill his duties as Cook County Sheriff. The three challengers, Sylvester Baker Jr., Bill Evans and Ted Palka, have 75 years of law enforcement experience between them. Current Sheriff Tom Dart and several of his appointees, the candidates have noted throughout the campaign, have none. The lack of experience, according to Evans, has resulted in a lack of leadership in the top ranks of the Sheriff’s Office and a crumbling of morale underneath. “Good leaders show a presence,” said Evans. “Good leaders listen, good leaders make decisions and good leaders communicate. Those are things that are essential in this organization right now that I simply don’t think are being done.” Evans said that officers regularly complain
to him about a general lack of support from the sheriff’s administration, a lack of meaningful training, the dismantling of key K-9 units, the overcrowding at the county jail and the amount of resources wasted on settling lawsuits filed against the Sheriff’s Office. Lawsuits filed against the Dart administration have indeed been costly, including a $2.4 million settlement sent for approval to the Cook County Board in February 2014. The 21 officers who filed suit in that case contended that Dart retaliated against them because they supported Dart’s political opponent in 2006. In February 2014, the Roderick MacArthur Justice Center filed suit against the Sheriff’s Office on behalf of nearly 100 inmates in the Cook County jail. The suit alleges that inmates are frequently beaten by officers and forced to live in unsanitary conditions. If elected, Evans plans on hiring people with an understanding of and experience in law enforcement. He wants to immediately correct lapses he has identified in training, address systemic issues at the county jail and mend strained relationships with other agen-
cies including the U.S. Marshal’s service. “I don’t believe that somebody with no law enforcement experience should be the chief of the sheriff’s police. I don’t believe that somebody with no correctional experience should be the executive director of the Department of Corrections in Cook County. That’s just my philosophy. Those are things that are going to change,” said Evans. Evans currently serves as a lieutenant in the Sheriff’s Police, his 23-year career includes assignments in SWAT, gang crimes and field training. Baker and Palka are both retired, having served 22 and 30 years respectively. Palka rose to the level of deputy sheriff and inspector, while Baker served as a correctional officer and as a member of SWAT, gang crimes and narcotics. “As an inspector, I was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Inspection Unit,” said Palka in a statement to EXTRA, explaining how his experience would assist him if elected. “This unit was tasked with ensuring compliance with all Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures. This position allowed me to gain firsthand knowl-
edge of the strengths and weaknesses within the Sheriff’s Office.” Palka, like Evans, is concerned about overcrowding at the county jail. If elected, he plans on making greater use of electronic monitoring programs, a move he believes would save taxpayers millions of dollars. “When it comes to making a decision on ankle bracelets, the current administration diverts the responsibility to the presiding judges,” Palka said, “The practice of diverting responsibly needs to end.” Both Palka and Evans also emphasize their frustration with the level of politics inside the Dart administration. “There is no place for politics in law enforcement,” Palka said, “As the top law enforcement official in the county, the sheriff is responsible for the safety and security of residents of Cook County.” Evans takes his criticism further, suggesting that Dart’s lack of experience and political maneuverings threaten the safety of both sheriff’s officers and the public they serve. Neither Dart nor Baker Jr. responded to EXTRA’s interview requests.

“Obscuro Total” estrena el 15 de marzo en el Olympic Theatre, 6134 W. Aylín Mujica visits Chicago for the premiere of “Obscuro Total” by Mayra Elisa Buitrón The talented and famous actress Aylin Mujica returns to Chicago with a first-class cast— Fernando Colunga, Blanca Soto and Ernesto Laguardia—to present the play ‘’Obscuro Total” on March 15 at the Olympic Theater. The tragic comedy is an adaptation directed by Fernando Colunga and produced by Eduardo Prado, in which “the audience will not stop laughing,” according to Mujica. The play encompasses the topic of distrust, infidelity and communication in relationships. “I’m the victim - a completely honest person and smart executive that is suddenly in doubt about the nine-year relationship she has with her husband,” said the Cuban actress who plays Laura Esquivel, Julio’s wife, role played by Colunga.
“It’s a reflection of what we are experiencing today in society; the problem in the relationships of couples who have been together for many years. We do not yet understand that relationships and love change color, flavor. The first option is to end the relationship and that’s it. We don’t dedicate ourselves to work on it a little and give it our best effort. The entire audience will identify with each of the characters. It’s so real, “stated Mujica. Mujica is also a host, dancer, model and mother of three children with whom she resides in Miami, Fla. She said she has a love for hosting shows, participates in comedies and hopes to soon engage in production. She is currently promoting “Obscuro Total” in Puerto Rico and is causing sensation for her participation in the program “Top Chef
Stars,” a culinary competition where the actress shows her talent in the kitchen. “I feel very happy. I am a woman who does not like to stop, but sometimes I have to stop because I have to be a mother, a great responsibility that I have, and sometimes I like to rest,” said Mujica. She has learned to properly manage her time between home and her career so that it doesn’t affect her children. “Mothers are capable of doing everything. What is left in the children’s subconscious and in their life is the quality time you give them and not the quantity. Spending time with them, when they go to sleep with you, telling them you love them— these are the things that remain with the children that are the most important. Today as a single parent, I have to be a mother and a
father, but you can definitely be a mother and a professional,” said Mujica. Excited for her upcoming visit to Chicago and the premiere of the play, she encourages the audience “to come out of the cold by coming to the theater. It’s like a roller coaster. You go to the theater and you go up on this roller coaster of emotions. You laugh all the time and then at the end, you do not know what to expect. You’re surprised. It’s somewhat new, which the world is not used to seeing with many surprises,” said the actress, who is thrilled to visit Chicago, a spectacular city, one of the most beautiful in the U.S.”. “Obscuro Total” premieres on March 15 at the Olympic Theatre, 6134 W. Cermak Road, Cicero. For more information, call 312-3918754 or visit www.ticketon.com. n

Leonardo Rocco to present at America’s Beauty Show by Nikoleta Morales For the past eight years, Leonardo Rocco has been developing a marketing platform related to hair, beauty and lifestyle called Miami Hair, Beauty & Fashion by Rocco Donna. This year, Rocco will participate in America’s Beauty Show March 22-24 at the McCormick Place in Chicago. EXTRA: What styles will you show at America’s Beauty Show? Leonardo Rocco: We have three different presentations. We will present the new color and collection with new techniques like the asymmetric style, undercuts and fix cuts with mixed colors. Where and how long did you train to become an internationally known hair stylist? I started with my father. After that I trained in Europe – London, Paris, Milan and Barcelona. You work with many celebrities. How can we accomplish a celebrity look? My preferred hair products are Essential 7.
When the hair is dry, you have to put two to three drops in it and you will have shiny hair [like a celebrity]. This product is amazing. What hair styles are trending now in spring? The copper red, gold and violet colors. One color is OK but it is more interesting to show different techniques, more avante-gard and classic. The trend is also medium and short hair. For me, the focus is more the short, undercut disconnection, asymmetric and different styles with long hair. What is your favorite hair style? I love braids. The retro wave is very good and is trendy right now. All Hollywood stars wear retro style. What trends will we see in the Nuestra Bellaza Latina show this year? The Latin girls normally prefer long hair. We show long waves, more casual looks, styles like chignon together, the messy look, wavy short, braids, etc. For more information on Rocco, visit www. roccodonna.com. n
