Gracias por leer por Alex V. Hernández gerente del edición trad. Víctor Flores Armando nuestra última edición, tuve oportunidad de sumergirme en la historia de 35 años de EXTRA, donde descubrí algunas cosas interesantes. De hecho, en los ’90s, el periódico tenía una oficina con cinco personas en el barrio de La Villita, además de su oficina principal en Humboldt Park. Durante este período, EXTRA tuvo 48 empleados, 25 de ellos de tiempo completo. Fue también durante este período que me topé con el nombre de Carlos Hernández Gómez. Él falleció en 2010 luego de perder la batalla contra el cáncer de colon. Él tenía 36. Aunque mejor conocido por su labor cubriendo la política local y nacional para WBEZ-FM y The Chicago Reporter antes de unirse a CLTV en 2005, él inició su carrera en los ’90s en EXTRA. Me sorprendió que el avezado reportero político con una antigua fedora que yo admiraba hubo laborado en la publicación en que fui interno durante el colegio y de la cual eventualmente me convertiría en el gerente de edición. Aunque no es claro el futuro que le espera al Periodismo, yo pienso que mi experiencia aquí, primero como interno, luego como reportero independiente y ahora como gerente de edición, me ha preparado para cualquier cosa a la que me lleve mi carrera en el Periodismo. Para cerrar, quiero agradecer a nuestros lectores por leer diligentemente el EXTRA por años, y reconocer que sin ellos EXTRA nunca hubiese pasado de la primera edición. Y al personal actual del periódico, deseo expresar mi gratitud por compartir sus considerables talentos con el tiempo y en especial decirles gracias por trabajar a mi lado en mi ejercicio, aunque breve, como gerente de edición. He disfrutado de verdad mi estancia aquí y aprecio haber tenido oportunidad de trabajar al lado de gente tan talentosa, creativa e inteligente. Q

Hernandez managing editor While putting together our final print edition, I had the chance to dive into EXTRA’s 35 year history, where I discovered a few interesting things. For instance, back in the 1990s the newspaper had a five-person office set up in the Little Village neighborhood in addition to the main office in Humboldt Park. During this period EXTRA had around 48 employees, 25 of them full-time. It was also during this period that I came across the name of the late Carlos Hernandez Gomez. He passed away in 2010 after losing a battle with colon cancer. He was 36. While best known for his work covering local and national politics for WBEZ-FM and The Chicago Reporter before joining CLTV in 2005, he began his career in the 1990s at EXTRA. It blew my mind that Gomez, the dogged political reporter in an old-school fedora I admired, had worked at the publication that I interned at during college and would eventually become the managing editor of. And looking at more recent history, Silvana Tabares, my managing editor during my intern-
ship at EXTRA in 2008, is currently an Illinois state representative for the 21st District. Meanwhile EXTRA’s production manager during my internship, Abel Arciniega, is now the official photographer for the Chicago Fire soccer team. When I was hired as managing editor last year, anyone I spoke to who knew EXTRA’s history had told me it was an important first step to bigger and better things. While it’s unclear what the future holds for journalism, I do feel that my experience here, as first an intern, then a freelance reporter and now its final managing editor, has prepared me for anything my journalism career has to throw at me. In closing I want to thank our readers, for diligently reading EXTRA over the years, and acknowledge that without them EXTRA would never have made it past its first edition. And to the newspaper’s current staff, I want to express my gratitude for sharing your considerable talents with EXTRA over the years and especially say thank you for working alongside me in my tenure, however brief, as your managing editor. I have truly enjoyed my time here and I appreciate having had the opportunity to work alongside such talented, creative smart people. Q

Unsentidoadiós El principio…
C
uando el EXTRA Noroeste inició en junio de 1980, fue con mucha anticipación y trepidación. Las comunidades de Humboldt Park, Hermosa, Logan Square y Wicker Park tenían etnias variadas, de Europa oriental hasta puertorriqueños y mexicanos durante mucho de los ’70s. El periódico comunitario (El Diario) había cerrado. Era publicado en inglés y la mayoría de vecinos hablaban y leían español. La Av. North tenía enormes vacíos en sus frentes y la antigua Asociación Comercial North-Pulaski ya no existía. El cuadro original de la asociación comercial muestra una organización de más de 250 miembros varones. Se creó en los ’50s. La idea era crear un periódico bilingüe en inglés y español y poder hablar a generaciones múltiples de lectores en el idioma de su preferencia – crear un puente idiomático entre generaciones, familias y vecinos. Yo tenía experiencia publicando otro periódico semanal y trabajé también para el Economista del Sur en los ’60s. También deseaba iniciar una nueva publicación y en especial en un área no servida por periódico alguno. Yo era madre soltera criando a tres hijas y no era hispana. Sin embargo, yo hube vivido en México por algunos años y podía hablar y leer español. Iniciar un periódico no fue un proyecto fácil. Pero en la vida uno halla ángeles en su camino y uno de ellos fue Tom Foley. Él poseía una pequeña taberna en el 3920 oeste de Av. North y también la tienda incendiada del 3918 oeste de Av. North. Él la ofreció como primer hogar de EXTRA sin cobrar. Todo lo que debíamos hacer era limpiarla, colocar ventanas y tabla roca y echarlo a andar (Más tarde se la compramos a Tom por $17,000). El Ejército de Salvación proveyó escritorios, alfombras y máquinas de escribir sin cobrar. Negocios que ya no existen, como las Tiendas de Deptos. Crawford y Mesh, Banco Pioneer, Alimentos Sentry, Calzado Izen y otros se anunciaron en EXTRA por adelantado para iniciarlo. Mis más sinceras gracias al mayor y más antiguo anunciado en EXTRA – el Mercado Pulga Buyers. Todos han sido un valor increíble en el barrio. Al hablar de los ’80s, debemos recordar que a las mujeres nos e les daban préstamos para iniciar negocios. Las compañías de servicios y teléfonos querían grandes depósitos incluso para dar servicio a nombre de una mujer y yo tenía un deseo ferviente de servir a la comunidad. Yo vendí anuncios por adelantado para suplir tales demandas y lanzar a la calle la primera edición. Todo lo que necesitaba era un editor. Yo conocí a Mary Montgomery siendo jurado. Mary era maestra, pero sentía también pasión por ser editora de un periódico; así que pidió un permiso para ser la primera editora de EXTRA. Tres años después, se convirtió en socia minoritaria de EXTRA. Durante sus 35 años de historia, EXTRA ha hecho muchas mejoras a la comunidad: Revitalizó la Cámara de Comercio North-Pulaski con ayuda del Alcalde Jane Byrne. El primer director ejecutivo de la Cámara de Comercio North-Pulaski ayudó a llenar tiendas vacantes

Trabajó con la Secundaria Roberto Clemente asistiendo en su Depto. de Periodismo. EXTRA fue miembro chárter de la Asociación Nacional de Editores Hispanos, NAHP (siglas en inglés). Trabajamos con Xavier Nogueras cuando él era activista comunitario; ayudamos a lanzar la carrera política de Joe (José) Berrios, apoyamos a organizaciones comunitarias como Proyecto Servicio Juvenil, Barrios Unidos en Acción (Katie Artzer), murales exteriores de Barrio Chicago y la Sociedad Cívica Mexicana y trabajamos con muchas otras organizaciones desaparecidas. Fue una revitalización para Humboldt Park con mucha energía y buena intención. En 1992, EXTRA fue vendido a Hispana Media, conglomerado de la Ciudad de Nueva York. Habían adquirido ya El Mensajero de San Francisco, El Diario de Nueva York y ahora EXTRA de Chicago. Mary y yo sentimos fuertemente que ese era un buen movimiento ya que hubo una movilización mayor de consolidación entre periódicos. Infortunadamente, dos años después, Hispana Media puso a EXTRA en el Capítulo 11 de Bancarrota. Lo sacamos de la bancarrota Mary Montgomery, Nile Wendorf y yo. Mary Montgomery pronto se fue a trabajar en la Alcaldía y mi esposo, Nile Wendorf y yo empezamos a reconstruir EXTRA. Mi hija, Kate Téllez, entró a trabajar en Ventas y pronto cubrió otro puesto. Contraté a gente maravillosa en Ventas como Fátima Olvera, quien ha estado en el periódico hasta esta última edición. Los Tiempos han Cambiado… Con la llegada de la era digital, se ha vuelto aparente que un área que ha sido afectada en gran grado es la industria del periódico. Si uno ve gente esperando el autobús, en la sala de espera del doctor, o visita un café – todos están en su teléfono inteligente. Ya no ve uno temprano viajeros leyendo el periódico. Otra área que ha sido afectada es la del negocio pequeño. Con el aumento al impuesto predial en la Ciudad de Chicago, las tiendas otra vez están vacías y hay una gran baja en negocios pequeños. El impuesto predial a nuestro edificio del 3906 oeste de Av. North subió un 100 por ciento los dos últimos años. Esto ya no es sostenible para un periódico comunitario y otros negocios pequeños. La edición que usted tiene es la última impresión de EXTRA. Somos privilegiados en haber servido a las comunidades hispana y angla y agradecemos a todos los que se anunciaron y a los lectores que contribuyeron al éxito de EXTRA. A fond farewell The Beginning...
W
hen the Northwest EXTRA was started in June 1980, it was with much anticipation and trepidation. The Humboldt Park, Hermosa, Logan Square and Wicker Park communities had changed ethnicities, from Eastern European to Puerto Rican and Mexican during most of the 70s. The community newspaper (The Journal) had closed. It was published in English and the majority of residents were speaking and reading in Spanish. North Avenue had huge vacancies in their storefronts, and the old North-Pulaski Retail Association was defunct. The original picture of the retail association shows an organization of over 250 male members. It was taken in the 50s. The idea was to start a bilingual newspaper in English and Spanish and be able to speak to multiple generations of readers in the language of their comfort—create a language bridge between generations, families and neighbors. I had experience publishing another weekly newspaper and had also worked for the South town Economist in the 1960s. I was willing to start a new publication, and especially in an area that was not being served by any existing newspaper. I was also a single mom raising three daughters and not Hispanic. However, I’d lived in Mexico for a number of years and was able to speak and write in Spanish. Starting a newspaper was not an easy project. But in life you meet angels along the way and one of them was Tom Foley. He owned a small tavern at 3920 W. North Ave. and he also owned the burned out store front next door at 3918 W. North Ave. He offered it up as the first home for EXTRA at no charge. All we had to do was clean it up, put in windows and drywall and we would be on our way. (At a later date we bought it for $17,000 from Tom). The Salvation Army provided desks, rugs and typewriters at no charge. Old retailers who no longer exist in the area like Crawford Department Store, Pioneer Bank, Sentry Food Store, Mesh department store, Izen Shoes and others gave advance advertising to EXTRA to get it started. My sincerest thanks to the longest and oldest advertiser at EXTRA—Buyers Flea Market. They have been an incredible neighborhood asset. When we speak about the 1980s, we have to remember that women were not being given loans to start businesses. The telephone company and the utility companies wanted large deposits to even put in service under a woman’s namem but I had a burning desire to serve the community. I sold advance advertising to meet these demands and also get the first edition on the street. All I now needed was an editor. I met Mary Montgomery while on jury duty. Mary was a teacher but had always had a passion to be a newspaper editor; so she took a leave of absence to be the first editor of EXTRA. Three years later, she was to become the junior partner in EXTRA. During its 35-year history, EXTRA made many inroads into the community. Revitalized the North Pulaski Chamber of Commerce with the help of Mayor Jane Byrne The North Pulaski Chamber’s first Hispanic executive director helped fill those vacant store fronts with seminars and a newsletter

Helped the United Cooks of Humboldt Park get clean sanitary food wagons and become licensed Worked with the Roberto Clemente High School assisting in their journalism department EXTRA was a charter member of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP) We worked with Xavier Nogueras when he was a community activist; helped launch the political career of Joe (Jose) Berrios, supported community organizations like Youth Service Project, United Neighbors in Action (Katie Artzer), Chicago Neighborhood outdoor murals and the Mexican Civic Society, and worked with many other now defunct organizations. It was a revitalization of Humboldt Park with lots of energy and good intention. In 1992, EXTRA was sold to HispanaMedia, a conglomerate out of New York City. They had acquired El Mensajero in San Francisco, El Diario in New York and now EXTRA in Chicago. Mary and I felt strongly that this would be a good move since there was a major mobilization of newspapers consolidating with other newspapers. Unfortunately, a couple of years later, HispanaMedia put EXTRA into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. It was bought out of bankruptcy by Mary Montgomery, Nile Wendorf and myself. Mary Montgomery soon departed to work in the mayor’s office while my husband, Nile Wendorf, and I started to rebuild EXTRA. My daughter, Kate Tellez, came to work in sales and it soon was in a turnaround position. I hired some wonderful sales personnel like Fatima Olvera, who has been with the newspaper until this last edition. Times Have Changed… With the advent of the digital age, it has become apparent that the one area that has been affected to a great degree has been the newspaper industry. If you look at people waiting for a bus, go into a doctor’s waiting room, or visit a café – everyone is on their smart phone. No longer do you see morning commuters reading the newspaper. Another area that has been affected has been the small entrepreneur. With the increase in property taxes in the city of Chicago, storefronts are once again becoming empty and there is a large decrease in small business. Our own building had its taxes increased by 100 percent in the last two years. This is not sustainable for a community newspaper or any other small business. The edition you are holding is the last printed edition of EXTRA. We are privileged to have served the Hispanic and Anglo community, and thank all our advertisers and readers who contributed to the success of EXTRA.
