by Sandra Treviño As the loving sons and daughters that you all are, we’re sure that most, if not all of you, have already put together your gift ideas for this Sunday’s Mother’s Day celebration. Of course, there’s always just a few of you who might have forgotten so we’ve put together a list of unique gift ideas that mom is sure to treasure. Beyond sweet There is quite a difference between picking up a box of chocolates from your local drugstore and actually taking the time to choose one-of-a-kind treats for your mother to enjoy. At Katherine Anne Confections, 2745 W. Armitage, you will get lost among the delectable variety of locally-produced, organic, handdipped truffles, caramels and marshmallows in flavors like rhubarb orange, mocha walnut, rose petal lemon and vanilla black pepper.
However, if these choices are too much for your traditional palate, you can take mom to Windy City Sweets, 3308 N. Broadway Street, and allow her to choose from the ceiling high candy wall and weather permitting, take a seat outdoors while enjoying the shop’s world famous ice cream. Both locations also offer ready-made gift baskets. Beyond sparkles You can never go wrong with jewelry as a gift especially when it’s custom-made with mom in mind. The “Family Stacking Charms Sterling Silver Necklace” from Bliss Living can be customized with up to three names on the largest disc, all engraved by hand. There’s also the charming “Nest Egg Necklace” or simple beauty of the “Links In Love” necklace from Uncommon Goods. And if it’s simply an accessory you’re looking for, we found the “Fashionable scarf” from Live Fashionable whose purchase creates sustainable business in Africa.

n May 8, 5000 teachers, students, administrators, and parents gathered in downtown Chicago to represent the 53,000 students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS), demanding that CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett and Chicago aldermen provide “Equal Dollars for our Scholars!” Currently, public tax money is divided unequally among CPS Schools and public Charter Schools. In addition to allowing this underfunding of charter schools, Illinois law also limits the number of charter schools that can be established, which has resulted in significant waiting lists at most charter schools, which can only accept students by lottery. Protesters called out 35 of the 50 Chicago land aldermen who signed a resolution
requesting a moratorium on the number of charter public schools in Chicago limiting the choices parents have to send their children to a good school. “We are here to unite and claim our right to equal treatment for our public school students. If we all pay the same taxes, why are the 53,000 public school students in charter schools receiving less funding?” said a Woodlawn resident parent. Silvia Garcia, a parent from UNO Charter School in Pilsen, led the crowd in a chant of “We want choice!” and “My child, my choice!” Dan Good, an administrator at CICS Charter Schools mentioned the success and joy students share at their school, and that 70 percent of their graduates go onto Charter High Schools. Students and parents mentioned the safety and a positive learning environment they re-

ceive at Charter Schools, and many are often afraid when they have to attend local CPS schools due to ongoing gang violence. “Charter Schools gave my child with special needs the attention he needed to succeed, I am here to support this cause and demand my child’s school gets the same funding CPS schools receive,” said parent Dawn Amobler from Johnson College Prep. CICS Executive Director Beth Purvis mentioned that all tax money for education should be divided equally among all public schools whether it is CPS or a Charter Public School. “I want the opportunity to send my child to a safe and quality public school. But she cannot get in because there are not enough seats in charter schools in Chicago. Why should my child’s future be sacrificed just because a bunch of people play politics?” said parent Jackie Johnson. At the end of the rally, CPU had all 53,000 students give a post card to drop off at the doorsteps of CPS. Hopefully someone will get the message. n

“Be Covered Illinois” Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) launched a statewide education and outreach initiative targeting Illinois’ uninsured residents. The enrollment period for uninsured residents opens in October with health care plans beginning in January, 2014. The “Be Covered Illinois” campaign will work with established community groups,

The Illinois Maternal and Child Health Coalition and Health & Disability Advocates are two community groups that agreed early on to partner on the Be Covered educational outreach effort, which complements the work they are already doing. Barbara Otto, CEO for Health & Disability Advocates, explains, “Any time we can improve understanding in the communities, we serve and educate residents about options that provide greater access to quality health care. We think it’s a win for all of us. Janine Lewis, Executive Director of Illinois Maternal and Child Health
Coalition added, “We have a long road ahead of us to improve understanding and educate residents about the [health exchange] options available to them in the fall and Be Covered is a step in the right direction in that journey.” Resources being made available in the Be Covered campaign include literature and a website, www.BeCoveredIllinois.org, which will have information about insurance coverage, benefit plan options and requirements of the new federal health care law.

A year-round festive atmosphere, fresh seafood prepared myriad ways, and a wide variety of activities make Veracruz a favorite vacation destination for Mexicans from all walks of life. The culture blends indigenous Spanish and Afro-Caribbean influences while pre-Hispanic ruins, ecological reserves, rivers, beaches and coral reefs provide unlimited experiences. The state begins just across the river from Tampico, Tamaulipas, in northern Mexico, and stretches, much like California, 600 miles south along the Gulf of Mexico to Coatzacoalcos. The port city of Veracruz is at almost the same latitude as Mexico City, 261 miles due west or about
Port of Veracruz Veracruz is where conquistador Hernan Cortes landed in 1519 and the first city established in Mexico by the Spanish, who named it La Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz (The Rich Village of the True Cross). It has a well-deserved reputation as the liveliest of Mexican cities, with an atmosphere reminiscent of pre-Castro Havana. The Caribbean has strongly influenced Veracruz, especially in music and dance, and carnival time brings with it an uninhabited display of color and gaiety. The city’s main square, with its sidewalk, cafes and restaurants, and the malecon, or waterfront promenade, are ideal
for strolling, people watching and taking in the port’s unique atmosphere. Wandering musicians and marimba bands serenade diners sitting at tables under the arcades. Evenings are reserved for danzon, a kind of tropical waltz, and people of all ages gather at the square Tuesday, Friday and Sunday nights to dance or watch. Sightseeing should include San Juan de Ulua, a large island fortress that is Veracruz’s prime historical landmark, and the Veracruz Aquarium, where you can get up close and personal with sharks. Boats docked along the malecon offer half-hour tours of the harbor and double-decker panoramic buses, called Turibus, offer tours of the port departing from the World Trade Center (WTC). n

Nicolás López: Crecí viendo “Ghostbusters”, “Back to the Future”, “Gremlins” y todas las películas populares de los 80s.
López uses own earthquake experience for “Aftershock” by Kiko Martinez After experiencing an 8.8 earthquake in Chile in 2010, director/writer Nicolás López couldn’t think of a more terrifying setting for his next film. In “Aftershock,” López teams up with “Hostel” director Eli Roth to follow a group of tourists who escape an underground nightclub in Chile after an earthquake hits, only to find there is more mayhem waiting for them on the surface. EXTRA: What are your earliest movie memories growing up in Chile? Nicolás López: I was raised watching “Ghostbusters,” “Back to the Future,” “Gremlins” and all those mainstream movies from the
80s. That was like my film school. Was making an English-language film something you knew you wanted to do in your career? Yeah; watching all those mainstream U.S. movies is what made me want to become a director. My goal was always to make a movie in English for the world. But I wanted to shoot that movie on my own terms. So, it was awesome I was able to shoot in Chile with my actors, crew, and production company, and with the help of someone like Eli Roth. Was Eli someone you had looked up to in the industry before you connected with him for this project? I always liked Eli’s movies because he was doing what I was doing. He shot his movie in-
dependently and then sold them to studios. That was very inspiring. As a director, Eli is known in the industry for his gory horror films. Would you be ok if people started putting you in the same category or are you more than that? I don’t care about labels. I just want to make movies that people are going to enjoy. I think people like me make horror movies as an escape. In this case, the film is based on true events. We aren’t talking about the Boogeyman. We’re talking about an earthquake – something that could happen to anyone. In a way, I think that is a very different kind of horror movie. It’s a disaster movie with a twist. What was going through your mind when that earthquake hit in 2010? I thought it was just a tremor at first, but then I saw my Nintendo Wii go flying across the room. I thought, “Oh, $#!@! This is real!” I opened my door and there were electrical explosions everywhere. The sky was white. I thought, “This would make a really good movie!” n

TORNADO TUNNEL CAR WASH

Lou Phillips sees himself in “Filly Brown” character by Nikoleta Morales Lou Diamond Phillips stars in the music-inspired film “Filly Brown,” which landed at the number one spot in 20 locations recently. The film stars legend Edward James Olmos, the late Jenni Rivera and newcomer Gina Rodriguez. In addition, the new season of Phillips’ A&E show, “Longmire,” premieres on May 27. EXTRA: You play Jose in Filly Brown, Maria’s (Gina Rodriguez) hard working dad. Can you relate to your character and do you see yourself in him being that you are a father of four daughters? You become responsible for the family; you do your best providing for their lives, no matter what your background. For me, there was no acting involved whatsoever. At my age and
where I am, you really have to open your heart and eyes and see your own personal experience and emotions in it. You played Jenni’s husband in the movie. What memories do you have of her in and out of the set? The very last scene in the movie, that scene went so well and so powerfully and I knew the movie had to come to that level. We all have big responsibility to bring emotion and earn that ending. I was so impressed with Jenni. This woman brings a true, real and honest raw emotion. I was incredibly impressed. I was actually doing the candlelight procession. I ran into Eddie (Edward James Olmos) and he pulled me aside and told me about Jenni’s plane having gone down. They didn’t know what happened so for an hour or so we had hoped she might have survived, but they said there were no survivors. I just

felt overwhelmed, shocked and stunned and it hit the news that night. It was really so surreal that I couldn’t wrap my head around it. What makes “Filly Brown” different than any other movie you have acted in before? The character is quite different. I am playing a dad. When I first read it, I thought it was like my character from “Stand and Deliver” but 25 years later [after] he grew up. I knew this was a family passion project with personal connotations to it and I was so drawn to the project. This is her [Gina Rodriguez] Cinderella story, an introduction to the film world. Reminded me of my days when I was her age. Having Jenni Rivera in the cast, she will always be special —Jenni’s only one and special movie experience, part of her legacy. Tell me a bit about your new show “Longmire,” which premiers on May 27. I am filming the second season right now and then a 10-episode run. It is the number one show on Sunday night on cable. Gina Rodriguez will come and do a guest appearance. It will be fun. n

No doubt about it, sales is for someone who is creative and very intuitive about people. Have you been doing sales or public relations? What about some kind of service position that requires you to be assertive and really nice?… do your friends consider you rather gutsy and out there? We work very hard for four days a week – Monday through Thursday selling advertising for our two weekly newspapers, our online newsletter, and web presence. One of our newspapers is bilingual (Spanish/ English) and the other one is in English. E xtra Logos
