Hope glimmers in proposed immigration bill Yana Kunichoff The Chicago Reporter Under the current U.S. immigration law, there is virtually no relief for immigrants who have already been deported, particularly if they left their country without a judicial hearing. But there is the possibility of some relief in the proposed immigration reform bill pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee, according to a panel of immigration experts convened by The Chicago Reporter to discuss the bill. The Reporter’s latest investigation showed that more than half of the 25,000 immigrants deported between fiscal years 2008 and 2011 from Illinois and surrounding states left the country without ever appearing in front of a judge. The U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement is increasingly employing these fast-track deportations, the Reporter found. A big chunk of the immigrants who faced fast-track deportation—11,743 between 2008

and 2011—had signed “stipulated orders of removal,” which waive their rights to an immigration hearing. But in many cases, immigrants who sign stipulated removals don’t realize that they are waiving their rights to go through court, or that there may be ways to fight their deportation, said Mary Meg McCarthy, executive director of the Heartland Alliance’s National Immigrant Justice Center, a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides free or affordable legal services to immigrants. McCarthy was part of the Reporter’s Town Hall Forum “Still in the Shadows?” held Monday night in Pilsen. The forum included an interview with U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois’ 4th Congressional District and testimonies from an undocumented young Polish immigrant and a woman whose husband is currently in federal jail for attempting to cross the border multiple times. “The Senate bill contains a provision that will allow individuals who signed a stipulated removal form to see an im-

migration judge,” McCarthy said. “The judge will make a determination whether that individual signed that document knowingly and voluntarily.” The proposed bill also cracks open a window for people who have already been deported. “The bill does provide a provision that allows individuals who are ordered deported and have been deported to return to the U.S. if their deportation is not connected to a crime,” McCarthy said. Gutierrez, who was in Florida, joined the conversation by Skype at the start of the event. He said he was doing his utmost to get the bill passed with the provisions that would help immigrants in place, but there was a need for some compromise. “There is a broken immigration system,” Gutierrez said. “There is medicine. Republicans have certain medicine they want people to take to heal the system, and the Democrats have it, too,” said Gutierrez, referring to Republican’s interest in increased border enforcement and Democrat’s push for a path to legalization. What will really heal the system, Gutierrez said, is compromise. This story was first published by The Chicago Reporter on May 14. n

ore than 100 parents and eight community organizations—Chicago Commons, El Hogar del Niño, Erie Neighborhood House, Family Focus, Gads Hill Center, Gamaliel of Metro Chicago, Latino Policy Forum, and Onward Neighborhood House—gathered for a press conference on May 14 at Plaza Tenochtitlán in Pilsen to promote critical funding for the state’s Preschool for All (PFA) and Child Care Assistance programs. “We are here today to urge our state legislators to take a stand for our children to restore the 25 million dollars in early childhood education block grant, which was cut last year. We want legislators to say yes to the future of our children and no to any further cuts,” said Mario Perez, executive director of

El Hogar del Niño, which is an organization that provides Latino children a quality early childhood education. “This is a call to action.” PFA was slashed by 25 million dollars in 2012 and reductions in child care funding have caused the state to increase parent co-payments and reduce program eligibility, making quality child care unaffordable for working families throughout the state. According to the Latino Policy Forum, as Latinos now represent a quarter of Illinois children under the age of five, access to quality preschool child care is critical in these communities. “We believe that the state is going through a tough time financially, but the balance in the budget cannot be done on the backs of poor children,” said Maricela Garcia, Executive Director of Gads Hill Center. She also said that since 2009, nearly 80 million dollars has been cut from the Early Childhood Education

Block Grant, which funds Preschool for All. The cuts have resulted in 22,000 fewer early childhood education program slots. “We need legislators to help us get the 25 million back that our children need,” said parent Luz Morales, who attended the press conference. On May 15, 70 parents, teachers, children and administrators went to Springfield to deliver their message to the state representatives. Only few parents managed to deliver their written testimonies to Illinois Representative William Davis, who was the only one that came out as the others were “in session,” explained Sarah McElmurry, communications manager Latino Policy Forum. “But the message was heard,” she said. “We got there [in Springfield] at 10.35 am. We split up in teams. We were disappointed that we didn’t get a chance to talk to the committee but parents felt engaged in the process. We made the decision to come back [to Chicago],” said Perez who was on the bus with the parents. Maria Zuno, a mother of four boys, was one of the four parents who handed her written testimony to Representative Davis. In it, she

wrote her story about how she felt when her youngest child died and how she needed a lot of help to raise her other boys, which was provided to her by El Hogar del Niño. “I had my son pass away when I was in Mexico. I couldn’t focus on my kids, I felt very depressed. My help and support came from El Hogar del Niño. I am very grateful for this program,” said Zuno. “I felt like I wanted to share more of the story so he [Representative Davis] can understand it better. He said thanks for being there and will take the time to read the testimonials.” “It’s about helping each other out,” said 12-year-old Jasmine Marchan who was chosen to represent Ames Middle School in the hearing in Springfield. “We wrote letters to the senators to keep funding early education program because without this program kids will be on streets. With it, kids are more involved in the community – they are having fun and learning a lot of things.” While parents made the decision to go back to Chicago, a few of the organizations’ leaders stayed in Springfield to meet with the representatives and deliver the message. n

Orquesta la Nueve brings tropical music back by Nikoleta Morales It all started in September 2012 when Marlon Steven, lead singer and founder of Orquesta la Nueve, embarked on an uphill quest to assemble an orchestra that would revive the art of playing good live music that brings tropical music back to the people. “The reason that we believe that La Nueve has a different concept is because it has a roundtable policy in brotherhood, respected admiration for each other, one for the other. Most importantly – we are doing this because it is for the public and by the public,” said Steven. The director, composer, and second trumpeter, Elliott Espada, is a native of Puerto Rico, as well as the first trumpeter, Jaime Thomas. The talented bass player Jose Porcayo is accompanied in his Mexican heritage by the percussionist Everado Reyes. The two vocalists, who share an outstanding combination of alto and tenor range, Marlon Steven and Sammy Soto,

are both natives to Guatemala. First trombone Travis Cook, is Anglo and a Michigan native and professional pianist Yu Lu is from China. “Our mix is so strong with a lot of themes,” said Steven. “It is a misconception to think that tropical music can only be played by Hispanics and mostly men.” “The strong Latin groove simply calls to me,” said Yu Lu. Even though Orquesta la Nueve has launched in Chicago, it aims to go global. So far, they have shows lined up in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio, with a “promissory note” to play in Central America, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica. They are launching their first official concert in Chicago on May 18 at Club E (5415 W. Irving Park Rd). Orquesta La Nueve is currently working on a new album but their rehearsal videos can be seen on the YouTube channel. You can also check out their Facebook page at http://on.fb. me/105vMwO. n

Is there a human element in the immigration reform? by Attorney Kate Radder Radder Immigration Law Earlier this week, in Broadview, Ill., a group of seven courageous individuals protested the high number of deportations under the Obama administration by blocking the doors to the Broadview Detention Facility, which houses detainees and is one of the places where removal orders are carried out. The group of seven, none of whom hold any type of permanent legal status in the U.S., used pipes, chains, locks and their bodies to block the door. It seems they were tired of standing idly by while their families, along with thousands of others, are being torn apart by U.S. immigration laws. While Congress is debating Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR), these youth are desperately urging President Obama to halt deportations in

case CIR does happen. Much news coverage has focused on the potential economic consequences of reform rather than the potential societal consequences reform could bring. Perhaps it is easier for some to discuss reform in economic terms because it can be quantified more easily, or because it allows them to ignore the human element inherent in immigration and the devastating emotional consequences the current system has caused many. Young children are especially vulnerable. Most of my clients and the people I see in removal proceedings have young children born in the United States. In many cases, these people have no way of remaining in this country legally. The lack of relief is at times due to their criminal history, but often it is due to the amount of time they have lived here, or their inability to prove that if they are not al-

lowed to remain in the U.S., their U.S. citizen children will suffer more than any other child in the same position. What has resulted is a large number of young U.S. citizens in this country growing up with one or both of their parents absent in their lives. Many of these children are too young to understand why their father or mother is suddenly not there to hug them and put them to bed. All they know is that their parent(s) left them, often without even having the chance to say goodbye. The emotional effects this has on these children cannot be disregarded. There is an enormous amount of research that shows that children in families with an absent parent exhibit more violent behaviors and more emotional problems than do children who have both parents in their lives. Soon, this young generation of U.S. citizens will be grown up and perhaps have families of their own. The effects of our current immigration system on them and their families cannot be overlooked as a factor that may greatly affect the future of our nation, and it is important that any CIR address this fact. n

Fui a México a desarrollar mi carrera.

Marco Regil feels for immigrants by Nikoleta Morales Marco Antonio Regil, the TV host of “Minuto Para Ganar” (“Minute to Win It”) TV show on MundoFox, was recently listed on the top 50 “Most Beautiful” people according to People en Español. He opened up for EXTRA about his nomination, his journey to the U.S., and what he thinks about immigrants in the U.S. EXTRA: How does it feel to be on the list of the top 50 “Most Beautiful” people in People en Español? Did you expect that? Marco Regil: No; I didn’t. I never based my career on my looks. I got a lot of awards and other acknowledgments. MundoFox did a whole page congratulating me. I am flattered and thankful. It is an honor. What is it like being the host of “Minuto Para Ganar” and how different is it from being on shows like “Dancing With the Stars”?

I have been fortunate to host something that has been successful. We are the first Spanish speaking version in the U.S. The show is doing great, especially the second season. We have very beautiful heartfelt moments, something I haven’t experienced in other shows. What have you learned about people by being the host of the show? It’s really wonderful to realize that behind every single contestant there is a beautiful story. We all have our paths. Every person has an interesting story in their lives. It hasn’t been easy for anyone; this is what makes this country so strong. Some people are attacking the immigrants and when you see these people, it is completely the opposite story. We remind ourselves that they come here to work hard and make their dreams come true. Have you achieved the American Dream? I was born in Tijuana, one block away from the border. Every night I would hear the helicopters, telling people to go back to their

countries. It was a sad message to hear every night. I always dreamed about coming to the U.S. Being on the other side, [it felt like] here it is but you can’t have it. I wanted to be part of the Latino movement in the U.S. I came 10 years ago with a working visa and it took me 10 years to become a citizen. I cried a lot when I was at the ceremony and they asked me to pick a political party. MundoFox Is a brand new network, empowering Latinos. Today I signed a threeyear-deal with MundoFox that includes the empowerment of Latinos. I can give a voice to Latinos and I am proud to be part of this. It doesn’t mean I am leaving my country behind; this is an amazing historical moment to be a Latino. We have the future of our country in our hands.

In continued support of Mexico’s efforts to position itself as a “go to” premiere adventure travel destination, the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) is partnering with Visit Mexico and the State of Veracruz on the second annual Adventure Travel Mexico (ATMEX) trade fair at the World Trade Center in Veracruz. This year, from August 14th – 17th, over 400 inbound Mexican operators, outbound tour operators, international buyers and media will gather to learn more about the benefits of offering adventure travel and will develop partnerships to grow the adventure travel industry in Mexico. The success of ATMEX in 2012 as well as the Adventure Travel World Summit in Chiapas in 2011 has created growing awareness in Mexico of the sustainable benefits of adventure travel. “Recent trends point toward more travelers wanting an experiential trip that delves deep into the nature and culture of a destination. Those looking ahead now, like Mexico, will be well served in the future. Mex-

ico has a mature tourism industry. Now it is time to mature the adventure sector, which tends to support the larger rural areas that have been overlooked by traditional tourism,” said ATTA’s president Mr. Shannon Stowell. Prior to and following ATMEX, Veracruz and other Mexican states will offer a series of expense-paid familiarization trips for qualified buyers and media that will showcase the destination. Veracruz is known for its relaxed atmosphere, culinary delights and its adventure activities that include among others, river rafting, hiking, mountain climbing, parasailing and fishing, and cultural highlights such as El Tajin, one of Mexico’s finest archaeology parks. Currently, the ATTA is developing the educational component for ATMEX, as well as inviting key outbound buyers from around the world with an interest in understanding and selling adventure travel trips to Mexico. To learn more about ATMEX and pre-register as a buyer or media, visit the 2013 Adventure Travel Mexico website. For more information, visit: www.adventuretravel.biz/connect/atmex2013/. n

Pegg beams up as Scotty once again by Kiko Martinez In “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the second film of the series directed by J.J. Abrams, actor Simon Pegg (“Hot Fuzz”) reprises his role as Montgomery Scott (AKA Scotty), a Starfleet Officer and the chief engineer on the Starship Enterprise. In this sequel, Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a man hunt for a former Starfleet commander (Benedict Cumberbatch) who has gone rogue. EXTRA: How has Scotty changed after the events of the 2009 film? Simon Pegg: Well, we worked out that the events of this film take place about six months after the first “Star Trek.” Scotty is fairly en-

sconced in engineering on the Enterprise. He has the job he wanted and is very happy tending to the warp core and doing his thing down in engineering. Then the events of “Into Darkness” somewhat upset that. Now that we know this new series of “Star Trek” movies isn’t going anywhere for a while, as an actor is it exciting to know that even if nothing else works out, you’ll have a “Star Trek” movie to do every few years? I would be very lucky if that was the case. It’s a great film to work on and a great bunch of people to hang out with. I think any actor would be foolish not to see that as a blessing. I was never a fan of the TV series or the original films, but I really enjoyed what J.J. Abrams did with his version. Was creating

Whether people enjoyed it in the moment as a single film or joined up with the allegiance of lifetime “Star Trek” fans out there, the important thing was that the film itself was an effective and enjoyable piece of cinema. We all worked our asses off to make sure that happened. What was it like having a fellow Englishman, Benedict Cumberbatch, join the cast as the villain? Well, we have him and Alice Eve, who is also British, and Noel Clarke, even though we don’t see him as much. We had our own little British contingent on this movie, which was kind of nice. But we didn’t sit in a corner alone drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches. It was a very integrated cast. We all welcomed our new team members with open arms. n

Chicago Fire fall 1-0 to Philadelphia Union Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper On May 11, The Chicago Fire fell 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union at Toyota Park. The Fire created 15 shots on goal but fell victim to a 75th minute goal by Union forward Jack McInerney. “We came out. We had good energy. We were good with the ball. In the first half there were opportunities where we forced the ball in bad spots. We knew they were a good team in transition,” said Frank Klopas, Chicago Fire head coach. The Fire came close in the 33rd minute. Patrick Nyarko dribbled into the box and centered the ball for Chris Rolfe but the Union’s Gabriel Farfan blocked the initial shot. Daniel Paladini pounced on the rebound and unleashed a one-time shot that Zac MacMath kicked out to Wells Thompson, but Thomp-

son’s shot was blocked out for a corner kick. After a scoreless first half the Fire came out with renewed vigor and continued to press for the opening goal. “It’s a little bit frustrating. I thought we played well, but we’re on a bad run. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I’m confident that it’s going to turn around. Games keep passing us by, but I’m optimistic that the team will turn it around,” said Patrick Nyarko, Chicago Fire Forward. In the 48th minute, Gonzalo Segares sent in a cross for the left side to Paladini, who laid the ball off for Nyarko. The fleet-footed Ghanaian was able to pivot and hit a right-footed blast on goal, but it banged off the post and out for a Union goal kick. The visitors got the only goal of the match in the 75th minute. The Union won a free kick just inside the Fire’s half. Sebastian Le

Toux took a quick restart, sending the ball in behind the Fire backline to Jack McInerney. The Alpharetta, Ga. native took a touch to settle and slotted the ball past Johnson to give the Union the 1-0 lead. In the 78th minute, Fire keeper Sean Johnson snagged a Union corner kick out of the air and quickly sent the ball up field for Nyarko. Nyarko broke away from Raymon Gaddis and headed towards goal. Nyarko was unable to round the keeper and MacMath swept the ball away to freedom. The Fire would get one last chance in the waning moments of the match. Rolfe dribbled into the box, played a give-and-go with Segares, and lofted the ball across the goal. The cross was headed out by the Union defense to Quincy Amarikwa, who unleashed a powerful volley toward goal, but MacMath was able to punch it out at the last second as the match ended 1-0. The Fire will return to Toyota Park when they host D.C. United on Sunday, June 2 at 4p.m. Tickets for the match are available by calling 888-MLS-Fire or by visiting www.

Chicago Bears - the road to training camp begins by Gabe Salgado The road to training camp has begun for the Chicago Bears. Last weekend (May 10-12), the Bears held their annual rookie mini-camp at Halas Hall. While this was a “rookie” camp, there were eight second-year players in attendance.

There were 52 players altogether who participated, which includes the six draft picks, along with 10 undrafted free agents and 32 non-roster invitees. The spotlight was on the 2013 draft picks; it was time for these athletes to earn their keep. First-round draft pick Kyle Long was under the biggest pressure. He picked up on the of-

fense pretty quickly and showed speed playing right guard and right tackle. Second-round pick, linebacker Jon Bostic, was the biggest standout of all the draft picks. He’s already showing leadership in addition to the fact that he caught on to the defensive playbook faster than most players. He has superior speed and even lost a few pounds since his combine workout. Fourth-round pick, linebacker Khaseem Greene, looked a few pounds bigger but otherwise did very well in pass coverage. Fifthround selection, offensive tackle Jordan Mills is progressing slowly while sixth-round former,

linebacker Cornelius Washington has fully embraced his conversion to full-time defensive end. Seventh-round receiver, Marquees Wilson, made some big catches over the weekend though more could be improved. Some of the non-roster players also stepped their game up. Running back Michael Ford, receiver Demetrius Fields, defensive tackles Corvey Irvin and Christian Tupou, and cornerback Maurice Jones impressed Marc Trestman so much that they were signed to the roster. These young men will really put their skills to the test as full-team workouts get underway. n
